Genetically modified T. kivui gains ability to metabolize carbon monoxide

12 June 2025 at 17:17
Genetic changes can occur naturally through evolution or can be initiated with the help of genetic engineering. The bacterium Thermoanaerobacter kivui (T. kivui) was manipulated by a research team led by Stefan PflΓΌgl from the Institute of Chemical, Environmental and Bioscience Engineering at TU Wien in such a way that it can metabolize carbon monoxide.

CRISPR/Cas9 modifies Euglena to create potential biofuel source

13 September 2024 at 17:05
News about biofuels sometimes mentions used cooking oil as a feedstock, but if these substances contain animal fat, they can solidify in colder temperatures. This happens because, chemically, the fatty acids of these and many other saturated fats have long carbon chains with single bonds. Enter the Euglena.
