Subaru is stepping up its electric vehicle game in Europe, confirming plans to launch three new battery-electric crossovers by 2026. Developed in partnership with Toyota, the trio brings familiar hardware with Subaru’s own quirky styling choices, which have often sparked debate. The new models include the Uncharted, the facelifted Solterra, and the E-Outback, which is Europe’s version of the Trailseeker.

These additions will effectively triple Subaru’s EV lineup in the region, which until now has consisted solely of the Solterra. All three vehicles are built on the e-Subaru Global Platform, Subaru’s take on Toyota’s e-TNGA electric architecture.

The Subaru Uncharted

Leading the charge is the Uncharted, Subaru’s spin on the Toyota C-HR+. The crossover stands out with a Subaru-specific front end that borrows elements from the updated Solterra, including its headlight design and sculpted bumper. Rugged alloy wheels round out the exterior changes. Inside, the Uncharted gets a squared steering wheel and slightly different interior trims, while sharing features like the 14-inch infotainment display and dual wireless chargers with its Toyota twin.

Buyers can choose between front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations, both of which offer respectable performance. Power peaks at 338 hp (252 kW / 344 PS), and the entry-level variant uses a 57.7 kWh battery rated for 276 miles (444 km) of range. A larger 77 kWh option boosts range to 363 miles (584 km) for FWD models and 292 miles (470 km) with AWD.

The Solterra Returns, Sharper and Stronger

Moving on to a more familiar member of Subaru’s EV lineup, the Solterra is back with fresh styling, more tech, and upgraded underpinnings. The dual electric motors generate 338 hp (252 kW / 343 PS), representing a healthy increase of 123 hp (92 kW) compared to the original version that debuted in 2022. Furthermore, a larger 73.1 kWh battery pack delivers over 310 miles (500 km) of range between charges.

The styling updates are focused on the front end, with slimmer LEDs and a cleaner design for the bumper. The EU-spec Solterra was shown with glossy black fenders, so it is not clear if higher trim levels will feature the body-colored finish seen in the North American model. The EV also benefits from a new 14-inch infotainment display and improved ADAS.

Meet the E-Outback: Subaru’s Biggest EV Yet

Last but not least, the Subaru E-Outback is the European twin of the Subaru Trailseeker and the Toyota bZ Woodland. It is longer and more spacious than the Solterra, with a boot that is large enough for four suitcases. Subaru shared a single photo of the Trailseeker, so we guess that the E-Outback will look identical, minus the amber indicators.

Performance takes another step up here. The E-Outback is powered by a dual-motor setup producing 377 hp (280 kW / 380 PS), paired with a 74.7 kWh battery that delivers 279 miles (447 km) of range. Designed with adventure in mind, it includes Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD, X-Mode terrain management, and 210 mm (8.3 inches) of ground clearance. It also matches the Solterra’s towing capacity at 1,500 kg (3,307 pounds).

Rollout Timeline

The facelifted Subaru Solterra will be the first to reach European dealers by the end of 2025. The Uncharted and E-Outback will follow in early 2026. Subaru plans to announce pricing details closer to each model’s launch.

In an EV market overflowing with hype and hopeful startups, Faraday Future is still angling for the spotlight, even if it’s usually more about keeping the lights on than reinventing the wheel. The company may have only delivered 16 units of its FF 91 since 2023, but with fresh funding in hand and eyes still set on redefining mobility, it’s now turning attention to a new concept: a tech-laden minivan aimed at the mass market.

Backed by $105 million in newly secured funding, the electric vehicle startup has introduced the FX Super One, a minivan that leans heavily into AI integration and digital innovation.

The new model debuted during a special event at Faraday Future’s headquarters in California. It’s pitched as an “affordable mass market MPV,” designed to offer a roomy, thoughtfully constructed interior with premium materials and a wide array of advanced features.

Built on Chinese Bones

Instead of being a clean-sheet design, the FX Super One is actually based on the Wey Gaoshan minivan by the Chinese automaker Great Wall Motors. . Despite those shared underpinnings, the FX Super One comes with several Faraday-specific updates: a refreshed front-end design, black trim, 20-inch alloy wheels, and, perhaps most notably, a new AI-powered digital grille.

This grille houses what the company calls the Front AI Communication Ecosystem, or F.A.C.E., a system that goes beyond displaying emojis or motivational messages. When the vehicle is parked, F.A.C.E. can interact with passengers through voice recognition, visual cues, and even reactive communication, offering something akin to a conversational co-pilot. For those who prefer a more conventional look, a traditional grille will also be offered.

At the core of all this interactivity is Faraday Future’s proprietary EAI Embodied Intelligence AI Agent 6×4 Architecture. This system manages everything from the digital grille to infotainment controls, voice-command features, and the vehicle’s suite of advanced driver assistance systems.

Tech, Comfort, and Customization

Moving to the interior, the FX Super One will be offered in four-, six-, or seven-seat configurations across two or three rows. The four-seat version, called the GOAT Edition, adds several luxury upgrades, including a retractable panoramic display, Dolby Atmos sound system, and Faraday’s upgraded Super AP platform. Comfort gets particular attention here, with zero-gravity seating and leather-like materials designed for long-haul relaxation.

Under the surface, the minivan uses a high-strength steel frame that likely traces back to the Wey Gaoshan, though it’s been adapted to Faraday’s electric-first approach. Initially, the FX Super One will launch with a fully electric powertrain featuring dual electric motors and standard all-wheel drive. Later, it will be joined by what Faraday calls an “AI Hybrid Extended Range” variant, which appears to follow the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) formula.

Gunning For The Escalade

The stretched version of its minivan twin from Great Wall measures 5,405 mm (212.8 inches) long, and has a wheelbase of 3,275 mm (128.9 inches). That puts it right against full-size SUVs including the Cadillac Escalade which was mentioned as a key rival, even though it has “less interior room, no sliding doors, and no AI integration”.

The target audience of the FX Super One includes celebrities and starts, visionaries and hard-working professional, but also regular family users. Among the user experience scenarios highlighted in the presentation is a star’s visit to a red carpet, a mobile livestream studio, a vehicle for elite athletes, a mobile AI office or private clubhouse, a golfer’s car, a mobile mansion, and a glamper’s car.

If everything goes according to plan, and that’s a big if, the FX Super One will roll out in early 2026. The model will be assembled at the Faraday Future plant in Hanford, California, allegedly using 50% locally-sourced parts. Faraday Future didn’t reveal pricing but is already accepting pre-orders for a refundable deposit of $100.

The FX Super One is not the only new model coming by Faraday Future. The company has announced the FX 4 which is believed to be an affordable Tesla Model Y competitor, the FX 5 large-space sporty AIEV, and the FX 6 large family vehicle.

Alfa Romeo enthusiasts have been eagerly awaiting the return of the iconic Quadrifoglio badge on the next generation of the Giulia and Stelvio. While the high-performance versions of these models were widely expected to go fully electric, there’s now a possibility that the legendary nameplate may continue to feature internal combustion power as well.

That hint comes directly from Alfa Romeo CEO Santo Ficili. In a recent interview with Top Gear, Ficili shared that keeping the Quadrifoglio spirit alive remains a personal goal. When asked about future powertrain options, he explained, “Quadrifoglio can be BEV, why not? But it can also be ICE.”

A High-Powered Future, But Not Fully Decided

Last year, former Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato suggested that the upcoming Stelvio Quadrifoglio could debut with a fully electric powertrain producing up to 986 horsepower (736 kW or 1,000 PS). That level of output would put it firmly in supercar territory. However, it’s unclear whether the production model will reach that figure, and any internal combustion version, potentially with hybrid assistance, would surely land below that threshold.

The next-generation Stelvio was initially expected to debut toward the end of 2025, though reports suggest the launch has been pushed back. In any case, the SUV isn’t likely to reach showrooms before 2026, with the new Giulia scheduled to follow after that.

Both models are based on the STLA Large platform, which has encountered development delays. These are linked to the addition of ICE and plug-in hybrid variants alongside the EVs. Ficili confirmed that both models underwent a last-minute redesign at the front to accommodate the cooling requirements for gasoline engines.

Ficili emphasized that future Alfa Romeos must retain a clear brand identity, both visually and dynamically. “When you look at the car, you must understand immediately it is an Alfa,” he said. “And the driver must have everything under control. So I’m not imagining tonnes of things around you that don’t help. We need the right balance between suspension, steering, absorption, exhaust and engines to find the right handling of the car.”

Alfa To Remain A Small Brand

Despite challenges in sales figures, Ficili made it clear that Alfa Romeo isn’t aiming to become a volume brand like BMW. “We need to keep the customers who are in love with Alfa,” he said, citing the brand’s history, racing legacy, and iconic past models. “There is a long queue, because of the legacy, the racing, the glory, the product we created in the past. Junior is the right model to satisfy younger people. A bridge between new customers and the older Alfisti.”

The CEO also hinted at potential synergies with Maserati that could lead to a follow-up to the sold out 33 Stradale supercar: “If I can also search for synergies with Maserati, we can imagine for sure to make products like this. We had the 8C, 6C, 4C. It’s easy. Why? Because I can look in the past of Alfa Romeo.”

There’s also potential for a return to smaller-bodied models such as coupes and spiders, which have long been part of the brand’s DNA. For now, though, these ideas are on hold. The priority, according to Ficili, is delivering vehicles that can support the brand financially over the next couple of years, a period he described as “not so clear.”

While the original Renault Clio Williams holds a legendary place in hot hatch history, modern fans looking for a spiritual successor may feel slightly left out. The current Clio lineup skips a performance-focused variant altogether, shifting attention to the fully electric Alpine A290 built on the new Renault 5 platform. Still, for those drawn to heritage and design, there’s now a limited-edition R5 that leans into nostalgia with purpose.

The Renault 5 Monte Carlo Edition is the result of a collaboration between Dutch dealer Zeeuw & Zeeuw and coachbuilding and design specialist Re-Volve. Only 25 units will be built, all for the Netherlands market. Billed as a tribute to Renault’s motorsport legacy, the special edition wears its influences proudly.

This electric R5 is finished in Midnight Blue with a contrasting black roof, a color combination already seen in Renault’s standard configurator. What sets the Monte Carlo Edition apart is a distinctive gold livery that runs across the grille, sides, and rear hatch, echoing the gold accents of its ’90s ancestor. It rides on bespoke 19-inch gold alloy wheels, adding a stronger visual link to its rally-inspired roots.

Inside, the special R5 gets black leather and Alcantara upholstery with gold stitching, alongside a commemorative plaque on the center console. The standard bucket seats already carry a retro-inspired design, but here the familiar blue “W” emblem from the Clio Williams is replaced with a gold “5”, bringing the tribute full circle.

The stunning spec certainly makes the R5 more desirable, adding sporty and premium tones. However, the Monte Carlo Edition doesn’t feature any upgrades under the skin. Surprisingly, it is not even based on the more potent version of the R5 with 148 hp (110 kW / 150 PS) that would closely match the 145 hp (108 kW / 147 PS) of the naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter engine found in the original Clio Williams.

Instead, it uses the 121 hp (90 kW) electric motor paired with a 40 kWh battery, offering up to 309 km (192 miles) of WLTP range. Renault says this setup allows for a 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) time of 9 seconds, with a top speed of 150 km/h (93 mph). Performance like this doesn’t live up to the legacy of the Williams badge.

For those willing to trade performance for exclusivity and nostalgic flair, the Renault 5 Monte Carlo Edition is priced at €37,995 ($44,400). That’s about €8,000 ($9,400) more than the standard R5 E-Tech Urban Range Techno trim it’s based on, which starts at €29,990 ($35,000) in the Dutch market. Availability is limited to Zeeuw & Zeeuw’s network in the Netherlands.

The electric vehicle space is evolving quickly, and some models are blurring the lines between old and new. When the Carens Clavis debuted in May 2025, many took one look at its sharp design and assumed it was electric. Turns out, that wasn’t far off. Kia has now introduced a fully electric version of the affordable minivan, confirming that the EV-inspired design of the internal combustion model wasn’t just a coincidence.

Designed with emerging EV markets in mind, this new electric variant is Kia’s first EV built in India. It mirrors much of the futuristic styling of the ICE-powered Clavis, with a few subtle but functional updates.

These include a front-mounted charging port, the removal of the central cooling intake, LED fog lamps, a lit-up grille, and redesigned alloy wheels shaped to improve aerodynamics. Kia describes it as a “lifestyle-ready recreational vehicle with SUV-inspired character,” and it’s positioned as a more premium take on the standard Carens, offering distinct exterior styling and a tech-focused interior.

Familiar Footprint, Refined Interior

Inside, the Carens Clavis EV retains a three-row layout, stretching 4,550 mm (179.1 inches) long and configured to seat seven. The dashboard features a wide 26.6-inch digital cockpit, standard across the range. Thanks to the absence of a traditional gearbox, the center console now has a floating design, which opens up more usable space.

Depending on the trim level, the EV is available with a range of comfort and convenience features. These include ventilated front seats, an eight-speaker Bose sound system, ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, and up to 20 advanced driver assistance systems with Level 2 autonomy. In the second row, Kia has added its “Boss Mode” seating with one-touch electric tumble functionality for easier third-row access.

As with the regular models, the Carens Clavis shares its underpinnings with the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos SUVs. Predictably, the electric version borrows the powertrain and battery options from the Hyundai Creta Electric.

The Base model is equipped with a 42 kWh battery and delivers 133 hp (99 kW / 135 PS) along with 225 Nm (166 lb-ft) of torque, offering an MIDC range of 404 km (251 miles). For those needing more range, the Long Range version steps up to 169 hp (126 kW / 171 PS) and 255 Nm (188 lb-ft) of torque, thanks to a larger 51.4 kWh battery, extending the range to 490 km (305 miles).

Charging and Market Positioning

Both battery packs are liquid-cooled, IP67-certified for dust and water resistance, and support Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality along with 100 kW DC fast charging.

Kia hasn’t shared a full list of markets where the Carens Clavis EV will be sold but said pricing and availability will be customized for each region. In India, where it’s produced, the EV is priced between Rs 17.99 lakh and Rs 24.49 lakh ($21,000–$28,600).

For context, the ICE-powered Carens Clavis, available with both gasoline and diesel engines, ranges from Rs 11.50 lakh to Rs 21.50 lakh ($13,400–$25,100).

Mazda’s partnership with Changan is quickly proving to be a smart move in the electric space. Building on the momentum of the EZ-6 sedan, the new EZ-60 crossover is already drawing strong interest, racking up over 33,000 pre-orders in China before even reaching dealerships. This strong early demand comes ahead of a planned launch in Europe, where the model will arrive under the name CX-6e.

The EZ-60 made its production debut at the Shanghai Auto Show on April 23, immediately generating significant interest with 10,060 pre-orders within the first 48 hours. According to Chinese outlet NetEase, that figure had climbed to 33,000 by July 11. The official market launch in China is scheduled for September.

Electric Power With Familiar Underpinnings

At 4,850 mm (190.9 inches) long, the EZ-60 is a midsize SUV positioned to compete with other premium electrified crossovers. It will be offered in both range-extender and fully electric configurations, sharing its EV platform with the Changan Deepal S07. While Mazda hasn’t released full technical specs yet, it’s hinting at notable range numbers, thanks in part to a focus on aerodynamics.

The design sticks closely to the 2024 Mazda Arata concept, with split LED headlights, a sleek closed-off grille, and a sharp, modern front end. The interior brings a generous dose of tech, including a 26.5-inch dashboard display, a 100-inch augmented reality heads-up display, digital rearview mirrors, and a 23-speaker sound system. Heated and ventilated seats round out a well-equipped cabin.

Made in China, Priced for Europe

Both the EZ-6 sedan and the EZ-60 crossover are being built by Changan in China as part of its joint venture with Mazda. This production arrangement will also apply to their European versions, which will be sold as the Mazda 6e and CX-6e.

Mazda hasn’t announced pricing for the EZ-60 yet, but the EZ-6 ranges from ¥159,800 to ¥181,800 (about $22,300 to $25,400) in China. By contrast, the European Mazda 6e starts at €44,900 (around $52,500) in Germany. If that’s any indication, the CX-6e will likely carry a significantly higher price tag in Europe.

That difference is partly due to intense price competition in China, which keeps domestic EV prices low, as well as the added cost of EU import tariffs on Chinese-built vehicles.

Mazda’s Next EV Will Be Built In Japan

In parallel with its Changan-based lineup, Mazda is also developing a fully in-house electric model slated for release in 2027. This future EV will be built in Japan on a new platform and will use battery packs supplied by Panasonic. It will share its production line with Mazda’s existing ICE and hybrid vehicles, streamlining manufacturing as the brand expands its EV offerings.

Skoda is adding a practical twist to its all-electric lineup with a new commercial variant of the Enyaq. Called the Enyaq Cargo, this model transforms the familiar SUV into a light commercial vehicle (LCV), offering two seats up front and a flexible, reworked cargo area in the back. Developed specifically for the UK, the new variant is set to join commercial fleets across the country in the near future.

The conversion was made possible through a collaboration with Strong Plastic Products Ltd, a UK-based company. It complies fully with UK LCV regulations and builds on the recently updated Enyaq SUV rather than the Coupe version, which would limit usable space in the rear.

Purpose-Built for Practicality

Key changes include the removal of the rear bench and a new cargo area made of strong and lightweight plastic materials. A bulkhead with a tiny window separates the cabin from the modular cargo area, ensuring that the load remains secured while on the move.

From the outside, it is hard to tell that this Enyaq is not appropriate for family use. Unlike panel vans, the rear windows are still in place, but they are heavily tinted and their electric function has been disabled. Professionals can access the cargo area through the rear doors and the tailgate.

Powertrain Options and Range

The LCV conversion is offered with the single-motor Enyaq 85 or the dual-motor SportLine 85x model. In both cases, the power output is 282 hp (210 kW / 286 PS). Unfortunately, Skoda doesn’t offer a similar version of the performance-focused Enyaq vRS, which is good for 335 hp (250 kW / 340 PS).

Regardless of the drivetrain, both variants use a 77 kWh battery pack, offering a WLTP-rated range of up to 359 miles (578 km) for the RWD model and 332 miles (534 km) for the AWD version. That should more than cover the needs of most LCV users, with DC fast-charging available for added convenience.

According to the automaker, the project was commissioned by UK company National Grid Energy Distribution, which ordered 70 Enyaq Cargo models for decarbonizing its fleet.

The first-ever electric LCV by Skoda will be exclusively available to fleet customers. Pricing starts at £44,310 ($59,700) for a Skoda Enyaq 85, while another £1,815 ($2,500) plus taxes are required for the Cargo conversion.

Volkswagen is planning a major refresh for the ID.4 electric crossover, a move that signals more than just a routine update. Expected to arrive in late 2026, the redesigned model will edge closer to a full generational shift, positioning itself as a more direct electric counterpart to the internal combustion Tiguan.

As Europe’s EV market continues to grow, Volkswagen has pulled ahead of Tesla in regional sales and wants to maintain that momentum with a mix of new models and significant updates. One of the key players in this strategy is the next evolution of the ID.4.

Despite being five years old, the ID.4 remains a strong seller, but VW is preparing to sharpen its appeal with a full redesign inside and out, improved efficiency, and potentially, a new name.

A Fresh Design Language Across the Board

According to Autocar, Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer described the changes in clear terms: “We’ll re-do the ID.4 completely inside and out. It will be a completely different car—a huge step up.” He added that the redesign is essential for aligning the model with VW’s future design direction, calling the ID.4 their most important EV by volume.

The updated ID.4 will follow the design language introduced with the upcoming ID.1 and ID.2 hatchbacks, developed under design chief Andy Mindt. This same visual direction will also shape the next ID.3, which is set to receive its own major refresh in the second quarter of 2026, with the ID.4 update to follow later that year.

Earlier comments by VW’s development boss Kai Grunitz suggested that the redesigned ID.3 and ID.4 will have more references to the automaker’s past, while adopting a “lower and squatter stance”. Reading between the lines, the crossover might get squared-off headlights and taillights, a bigger faux grille, toned fenders, and a stronger C-pillar reminiscent of the Golf.

Interior Upgrades and Platform Enhancements

Grunitz has also revealed that the updated ID.3 and ID.4 will get a new interior, with greater emphasis on physical switchgear. VW has learned from its mistakes and will bring back the round volume knob instead of the impractical touch sliders.

Underneath, the updated model will continue to ride on the MEB platform, albeit an improved version. While the next-gen SSP architecture is still a few years away, expected no earlier than 2028, enhancements to motors and battery packs will bring gains in power, range, and efficiency, all crucial for staying competitive with a newer field of electric rivals.

The Electric Tiguan

Internally, Volkswagen is referring to the new ID.4 as the “electric Tiguan,” according to Autocar. That label may reflect more than market positioning. Martin Sander, who heads Sales, Marketing, and After Sales for VW, recently stated that future electric models will adopt “proper names again,” signaling a potential shift away from the alphanumeric ID naming system. A rebranded ID.4 might be part of that plan.

One casualty of the refresh could be the ID.5, the coupe-style sibling to the ID.4. VW is reportedly planning to discontinue it, partly due to its weaker sales performance. Unlike the ID.4, which consistently lands among the top five best-selling EVs in Europe, the ID.5 hasn’t made the continent’s top 25.

Besides the successors of the ID.3 and ID.4 that are scheduled to arrive next year, VW is also getting ready for the launch of the ID.2 supermini and the ID.1 city car in 2026 and 2027, respectively. A crossover version of the ID.2 is also under development for 2027, and will be shown in concept form (ID.2 X) at the Munich Motor Show in September.

Wagons may be all but extinct in today’s automotive landscape, cast away by buyers’ love of SUVs, but they still stir enthusiasm among certain corners of the car world. One such example is the Lexus IS SportCross, the only wagon in the brand’s 36-year history.

The five-door model lasted just a single generation before being discontinued, yet it still holds a place in the hearts of wagon fans. One of them is digital artist Theophilus Chin, who recently imagined what a modern Lexus wagon could look like in the current lineup.

Instead of starting with the aging IS sedan, Theottle chose the larger and more contemporary Lexus ES as the foundation for his design. The familiar sedan form is reworked with a taller, more upright rear, and styling cues borrowed from the all-electric RZ.

In this reimagining, the rear glass wraps around seamlessly into the side windows, visually slimming the D-pillars and giving the rear a cleaner profile. The roofline is less sloped than the standard ES, flowing into a pair of aerodynamic fins that replace the more conventional rear spoiler.

The lower portion of the tail is carried over from the regular ES, including the slim LED bar, the integrated ducktail spoiler, and the rear bumper. The wheelbase and the rear overhang haven’t changed, meaning that the ES Sport Cross retains the footprint of the sedan.

The new Lexus ES is based on Toyota’s TNGA-K architecture, which is compatible with self-charging hybrid and fully electric powertrain options. The flagship ES 500e trim with AWD capability would be the most fitting for the Sport Cross variant, generating 338 hp (252 kW / 343 PS) from its zero-emission powertrain. Furthermore, the 75 kWh battery would be good for a WLTP range of around 530 km (329 miles).

If it ever reached production, the ES SportCross would go up against premium wagons like the BMW i5 Touring and the Mercedes E-Class Estate. But while the idea might appeal to wagon enthusiasts, Lexus appears far more focused on sedans and SUVs these days, making this actually happening quite unlikely.

Still, there was a hint of possibility back in late 2021, when Lexus previewed a compact EV concept showcasing a variety of body styles, including a sedan, shooting brake, crossover, and convertible. At the time, many believed these prototypes hinted at the next generation IS, a model that now seems destined to offer more than just battery-electric powertrains when it eventually arrives.

Lexus

Electric flair is taking on a retro twist. While Volkswagen has signaled that the GTI nameplate will carry on in its future performance EVs, there’s still time for one last spotlight on the short-lived GTX badge. Before the GTI transition arrives, VW introduced a special edition that puts a striking spin on its current electric lineup called the ID.3 GTX Fire+Ice.

Evolving from last year’s vibrant concept, this limited-run model draws direct inspiration from a memorable early ’90s Golf.

Retro Styling Details

The production model dials back the concept’s shimmering finish in favor of a more conventional Ultra Violet Metallic paint. Even so, it retains several distinctive touches, including a custom logo on the spoiler, transparent matte decals on the C-pillars, a Flaming Red roof strip, and coordinating GTX | FIRE & ICE lettering along the side. Rounding out the look are 20-inch Locarno alloy wheels with anodized accents that match the body color.

Inside, the two-tone color scheme from the concept carries over, with Fire Red on the driver’s side and Keep Cool Blue on the passenger’s side. The jacket-style zippers on the front seats remain as a design nod, though they’re now decorative rather than functional. Additional details include contrast stitching and custom puddle lights.

As for equipment, the Fire+Ice edition is well stocked, featuring premium sport seats with massage function, an augmented reality head-up display, a Harman Kardon sound system, and an advanced suite of driver-assistance systems.

Performance Carries Over

The ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE doesn’t get any performance upgrades over the standard GTX and GTX Performance trims. This means it is available with a single rear-mounted electric motor producing either 282 hp (210 kW / 286 PS) or 322 hp (240 kW / 326 PS). The more powerful variant can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.7 seconds and comes equipped with the DCC adaptive chassis. That said, it’s still slower than the more affordable Golf R, which does the deed in just 4.6 seconds.

The 79 kWh battery pack is good for a WLTP range of up to 591 km (367 miles) and is compatible with DC charging of up to 185 kW.

Volkswagen

A Nod to the ’90s

This new Fire+Ice edition pays tribute to the 1990 VW Golf Fire and Ice, developed with fashion designer Willy Bogner. The original stood out with its color scheme and was available in several trims, including the GTI. VW reports it sold 16,700 units, well above its original target of 10,000.

That retro influence carries into the present through a modern partnership with performance apparel brand BOGNER FIRE+ICE. Production will be strictly limited to 1,990 units, making it even rarer than the model that inspired it.

In Germany, pricing for the ID.3 GTX Fire+Ice starts at €56,020 (around $65,500), a €8,795 ($10,300) premium over the standard GTX trim. It’s also more expensive than both the gasoline-powered Golf GTI Clubsport (€49,280 / $57,600) and the Golf R (€55,000 / $64,300), solidifying its status as the most exclusive and most expensive ID.3 on offer.

Update: Chevrolet has opened pre-sales for the Spark EUV in Brazil, pricing the electric vehicle at R$159,990 (approximately $28,600). That’s more than twice the cost of the identical Baojun Yep Plus sold in China. The original story continues below.

Chevrolet has found a clever (read: cost-effective) way to make the most of its SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture by rebadging one of China’s most charming EVs, the Baojun Yep Plus. This fully electric urban SUV made an unexpected debut during a special event celebrating Chevrolet’s 100th anniversary in the Brazilian market.

The new model, set to be sold in Brazil as the Chevrolet Spark EUV, is essentially a Baojun Yep Plus with a Chevy badge stuck on the grille—no other major changes to speak of. Despite sharing a name and compact proportions, the Spark EUV has absolutely nothing in common with the Spark EV, Chevrolet’s short-lived electric hatchback sold in select states in the US from 2013 to 2017 before being phased out for the Bolt.

Inside, the Spark EUV borrows the modern digital cockpit of the Baojun Yep Plus, comprising a 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a free-standing 12.8-inch touchscreen. It is also expected to inherit the advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) of the Chinese twin, developed by none other than drone-maker DJI.

The EV measures 3,996 mm (157.3 inches) long with a 2,560 mm (100.8 inches) wheelbase, making it Chevrolet’s smallest offering. While the Baojun lineup includes a five-door version, a three-door variant, and even a pickup concept, it’s unclear if GM plans to bring any of these alternative body styles to the Brazilian market.

Predictably, the Spark EUV borrows its electric powertrain directly from the Chinese-spec twin. A single rear-mounted electric motor generates 101 hp (75 kW / 102 PS) and 180 Nm (133 lb-ft) of torque. The 42 kWh battery pack offers a respectable 401 km (249 miles) of range on China’s CLTC cycle. The Baojun Yep Plus is also available with 32 kWh and 54 kWh battery options, but we don’t know if those will be eventually offered in the Chevy.

One would think that the most compelling aspect of this tiny off-roader is its affordability. Still, the Chevrolet Spark EUV starts at R$159,990 ($28,600) in Brazil, which is more than double the ¥93,800 ($13,000) price of the identical Baojun model. The little Chevy is also more expensive than the rival BYD Dolphin Mini (Seagull EV) which starts at R$115,800 ($20,700) in the same market.

Deliveries of the Chevrolet Spark EUV are expected to begin this summer. The model will soon joined by the larger Chevrolet Captiva EV which is based on the Wuling Starlight S from China.

In a year that’s been tough on electric sedan sales, one model in particular has struggled to keep pace. The Taycan was Porsche’s slowest-selling model in the first half of 2025, trailing even the aging 718 sports car that’s about to be replaced. To boost its appeal, Porsche is rolling out a new Black Edition for the US market, offering sharper styling details and a more generous set of standard features, including the largest battery pack available in the lineup.

The EV sits on 21-inch alloy wheels, complete with full-color Porsche crest center caps, and sports matrix LED headlights and a seamless rear light bar featuring an illuminated black Porsche logo. Front door decals are included with the optional extended Black Edition package, adding a bit more visual flair.

While the name suggests otherwise, the Black Edition isn’t limited to a single shade. Standard paint options include Volcano Grey Metallic, Dolomite Silver Metallic, Ice Grey Metallic, and the Jet Black Metallic shown in press materials. Buyers looking for something different can select from the Legends, Dreams, or Contrast color collections, or go entirely bespoke via the Paint to Sample program.

Interior and Equipment Upgrades

Inside, the Black Edition carries over the monochrome theme with subtle black detailing and embossed leather trim. Illuminated black brushed aluminum scuff plates and a unique Black Edition badge on the center console add to the tailored look.

The trim also bundles in a well-rounded list of standard features, including multiple driver-assistance systems, the Storage Package, 14-way power comfort seats, a Bose Surround Sound System, and Porsche’s Electric Sport Sound.

Underneath, all three Black Edition models come fitted with the Performance Battery Plus as standard. Usually an optional upgrade, this 105 kWh battery improves range and allows for stronger performance figures. That said, the electric powertrain remains unchanged, offering up to 429 hp (320 kW) in the base Taycan and topping out at 590 hp (440 kW) in the Taycan 4S.

Porsche

While Buick’s presence in the US is now all about crossovers and SUVs, the brand is taking a different route in China, where the traditional sedan still has a place. The all-new Electra L7 joins Buick’s lineup in the world’s biggest automotive market, bringing sleek styling, a high-tech interior, and electrified powertrains.

Electra is Buick’s sub-brand for new energy vehicles; it was formally announced in April 2025, with three concepts: a sedan, an SUV, and a minivan. The Electra L7 is the production version of the sedan, which evolves from the 2024 Electra L concept shown the previous year.

The model retains much of the design language introduced in the concept, though a few features have been streamlined for production. The lighting signature at both ends has been reworked, with more practical LED graphics. Furthermore, the sleek, flush door handles and traditional side mirrors replace some of the show car’s more experimental elements, bringing it closer to real-world usability.

Buick is proud of the wing-shaped “Galaxy” headlights and the turbine-style alloy wheels. The Electra L7 adopts an aerodynamic fastback silhouette measuring 5,032 mm (198.1 inches) long, 1,952 mm (76.9 inches) wide, and 1,500 mm (59.1 inches) tall. This makes it slightly longer than the Tesla Model S and the Mercedes-Benz EQE, and incrementally shorter than the BMW i5.

Inside, a Tech Showcase Awaits

While Buick hasn’t yet shown the cabin, it promised “class‑leading intelligent driver-assist capabilities, a smart luxury cockpit and best‑in‑class extended‑range technology”.

The Electra L7 is expected to feature a total of eight screens, a massive 50-inch augmented reality head-up display, and an array of AI-driven features. All of this will run on Qualcomm’s 8775 chip, which supports high-end infotainment and connectivity. Driver assistance tech will come from Chinese tech company Momenta, which has developed a suite of sophisticated ADAS capabilities.

New Platform with EREV and BEV Options

The sedan is just one of six new energy models Buick plans to launch in the next year, likely alongside production versions of Electra’s SUV and minivan concepts. All of them will be built on Buick’s Xiao Yao architecture, a flexible platform designed specifically for China. These underpinnings are compatible with fully electric, plug-in hybrid, and range-extender powertrains.

While Buick has yet to reveal the specifications of the Electra L7, documents from MIIT reveal the details of the EREV version. The SAIC-sourced powertrain combines dual electric motors with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine that works as a generator. The combined output is 502 hp (374 kW / 509 PS), with the electric motors sending power to all four wheels. The EREV is expected to be joined by a fully electric version using a CATL-supplied battery.

Pricing and Availability

The Electra L7 is described as a “300,000-class vehicle”, meaning it will be priced close to ¥300,000 ($41,800) in China. Buick hasn’t announced a date for the market launch, but is already accepting applications of interest for test drives.

As with other Electra-branded models, the L7 is likely to stay exclusive to China, so a US launch doesn’t seem to be in the cards. Production will take place at the factory of the SAIC-GM joint venture in Wuhan.

Buick has sold over 10 million vehicles in China since 1998. Its local lineup offers a much wider choice of models compared to that in the US, including four SUVs, four sedans, one hatchback, and a range of minivans.

Among small electric vehicles, the Renault 5 stands out with one of the most distinctive designs on the market. Its sportier sibling, the Alpine A290, shares the same visual charm, but one tuning company had a different vision entirely. Delta 4×4 imagined the Renault 5 not as a city runabout, but as a rugged, rally-inspired off-roader.

Their goal was to reimagine the EV as a compact trail-ready machine, complete with off-road hardware and motorsport styling. The transformation begins with a set of 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in chunky all-terrain tires. These provide improved grip on loose surfaces and, paired with a 100 mm (3.9-inch) suspension lift, raise the hatchback’s ground clearance significantly.

Off-Road Looks with a Rally Twist

The high-riding EV features four PIAA LED spotlights at the front, reminiscent of the original R5 Turbo rally car. While the bumpers have been carried over from the standard model, the pumped-up R5 gets wide fender extensions and leather straps mounted on the hood and the tailgate.

The Dakar-style roof rack holds dual LED bars for extra visibility, various kinds of containers, snow tracks, and a full-size spare tire. As a final touch, the model is wrapped in a colorful livery combining yellow, teal, pink, and black graphics on a white bodywork.

Despite its rugged stance, the donor vehicle is exclusively available with a single electric motor, meaning there is no AWD option. Its most powerful version makes 148 hp (110 kW / 150 PS), while the performance-focused Alpine A290 raises that significantly, to 217 hp (220 PS / 160 kW).

High-spec versions of the R5 are fitted with a 52 kWh battery pack, offering a maximum WLTP range of 400 kilometers (249 miles) between charges. Still, the grippy tires, worse aerodynamics, and extra weight of the off-road built will most likely reduce that number – which shouldn’t be an issue, really, given the model’s mission.

For now, the lifted Renault 5 exists only as a digital concept. However, if there’s enough interest, delta 4×4 may offer a conversion kit for owners who want to turn their retro-styled EV into a mini off-roader. The latest-generation Jeep Compass doesn’t stray far from the brand’s off-road DNA, and the 4xe trim is the clearest expression of that intent. This all-wheel-drive version is built with actual trail use in mind, not just the look of it, featuring a more functional exterior, chunkier wheels, raised suspension, and an interior that’s been reworked for real-world wear and tear.

While Jeep had already shared a look at the Compass 4xe’s exterior during its global debut last May, this marks the first full reveal of the interior. Among the model-specific upgrades is a revised cloth upholstery treated with polyurethane. Jeep claims it’s twice as resistant as standard fabric and far easier to clean after muddy outings.

Interior Built for Practicality

Additional touches include anti-scratch surfaces on the rear seatbacks, ideal for transporting pets or outdoor gear. The cabin also gets increased storage options and rubberized floor mats designed to handle mud, gravel, and water without fuss.

Visually, the interior leans into a more utilitarian aesthetic, with tan accents on the dashboard, doors, and seats, accompanied by subtle red highlights. Jeep says the earth-toned color palette helps mask dirt better over time. A 10-inch digital instrument cluster and a 16-inch infotainment screen come standard.

Upgraded Exterior for Trail Duty

On the outside, the Compass 4xe features slightly redesigned front and rear bumpers finished in Jeep’s scratch-resistant Bumper Shield coating. It also gains more prominent skid plates, a rear tow hook, a matte black anti-glare hood decal, and a new set of 19-inch wheels wrapped in higher-profile tires.

More importantly, the SUV rides on a suspension that sits 10 mm (0.4 inches) higher than stock, contributing to better off-road angles (27° approach, 31° departure, and 16° breakover).

Built on the STLA Medium platform, the new Compass supports a variety of powertrains, including mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric configurations. Jeep has yet to confirm which specific options will be available in the 4xe trim, though all-wheel drive and an extra off-road mode on the Selec-Terrain system come standard. The plug-in hybrid version produces a combined 195 hp, while the fully electric dual-motor variant bumps that up to 375 hp.

Deliveries in Europe are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025, with production taking place in Italy. The US version remains up in the air, delayed by ongoing tariff disputes. When it does arrive, the Compass 4xe will face competition from models like the Toyota RAV4 Adventure, Honda CR-V Trailsport, and Subaru Forester Wilderness.

As more buyers gravitate toward hybrids over fully electric vehicles, automakers are rethinking their EV roadmaps. Among them is Honda, which has reportedly shelved plans for a large electric SUV intended for the US market as it reevaluates its electrification strategy.

The decision seems tied to the slower-than-expected pace of EV adoption in the US. A recent tax bill passed under the Trump administration may have also played a role, rolling back key EV incentives and making electric models less appealing to cost-conscious buyers.

Cost Challenges and Changing Priorities

According to a report from Nikkei Asia, development and procurement costs for larger EVs are significantly higher, mainly due to the size and expense of the battery packs. Honda appears to have concluded that the financial risk of launching a large EV in this environment wasn’t worth taking, especially with the model originally scheduled for a 2027 debut.

The now-canceled SUV was meant to round out a lineup that includes a midsize electric SUV and sedan, both of which have already appeared in near-production form and are still expected to launch in 2026 as part of Honda 0 Series concepts. Honda’s broader plan was to offer seven EVs in the US by 2030, a target that now looks less certain.

Electrification Pullback, Hybrid Push

In May, Honda announced it had reduced its investment in electrification from ¥10 trillion ($69 billion) to ¥7 trillion ($48 billion). The company is now placing more emphasis on hybrid models, which will result in a scaled-back EV rollout.

Between 2027 and 2031, Honda aims to introduce 13 new-generation hybrids worldwide, targeting 2.2 million hybrid sales by 2030. This lineup will include a new large SUV designed specifically for the North American market, which could effectively replace the scrapped electric version.

Earlier this year, we reported a notable uptick in Honda Prologue sales, with a 963% increase in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. Still, total sales stood at just 16,318 units, making it the lowest-selling model in Honda’s US portfolio. Despite the sharp percentage gain, the numbers underscore the ongoing challenges in the EV segment.

Of course, Honda is not the only automaker that has delayed its EV plans. Nissan has canceled two EVs originally planned to be produced in the US, Ford has paused development of large EVs, while Toyota has postponed the production of a large electric SUV from 2026 to 2028.

As Toyota continues pushing forward with its multi-pathway strategy in Europe, the brand is gradually building out its electric lineup alongside its well-established hybrid offerings. During a presentation in Greece, we had the chance to get an early look at three upcoming models: the refreshed bZ4X, the new C-HR+, and the all-electric Urban Cruiser. All three are headed to European roads later this year.

Out of the trio, it was the smallest one that stood out. The Urban Cruiser, which made its debut in December 2024, is Toyota’s latest entry in the competitive B-SUV (subcompact) segment. Specifically developed for European buyers, this small EV will begin reaching customers in autumn 2025.

Toyota Looks to Suzuki for Its Smallest EV

While the Urban Cruiser acts as an electric counterpart to the Yaris Cross Hybrid, the similarities end with the badge. Underneath, it rides on Suzuki’s Heartect-e platform, shared with the upcoming eVitara, instead of Toyota’s e-TNGA architecture. Much of the exterior and interior design also mirrors the Suzuki, with only minor tweaks to differentiate the two.

At the front, Toyota adds its own identity through a hammerhead-style lighting signature and a more refined bumper design. These give the Urban Cruiser a cleaner, more cohesive look compared to its Suzuki twin. Apart from Toyota’s emblems and new taillight graphics, the rest of the body panels are essentially unchanged.

Inside, Space Outranks Luxury

Despite its shared features with the Suzuki, the Urban Cruiser aligns well with Toyota’s design language, thanks to its chunky front end, muscular fenders, and darkened taillight cluster. The SUV measures 4,285 mm (168.7 inches) in length, placing it between the 4,180 mm (164.6 inches) Yaris Cross and the 4,360 mm (171.7 inches) C-HR. However, its EV-specific packaging allows for a 2,700 mm (106.3 inches) wheelbase, which is longer than both of those models as well as the larger Corolla Cross.

This extra length pays off inside. Rear passengers benefit from generous legroom and a sliding bench, making the cabin feel roomier than the Yaris Cross. That said, headroom in the back is more limited, particularly for taller occupants. The fixed sunroof and the floor-mounted battery take up vertical space, which might be noticeable for those who prefer sitting upright.

Predictably, the rest of the interior is virtually identical to the Suzuki eVitara, with Toyota’s influence being limited to the emblem on the steering wheel and the Urban Cruiser lettering on the floor mats. The perceived quality is not bad despite the liberal use of hard plastics.

I’m not a fan of the glossy black finish of the floating center console, but the ambient lighting, the unusual texture on the door cards and the seat upholstery look pretty modern. Luckily, there are a few physical controls under the digital cockpit comprising a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch infotainment.

FWD and AWD Options, Up to 400 km Range

Under the skin, the Urban Cruiser offers the same range of powertrains as the eVitara. Buyers can choose between two battery capacities and three drivetrain options. The front-wheel drive version with the larger 61 kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery delivers a targeted range of around 400 km (249 miles). A dual-motor, all-wheel drive setup increases output to 182 hp, though the estimated range drops slightly to about 350 km (217 miles).

So What’s With The Land Cruiser Reference?

The name Urban Cruiser may sound like a playful nod to the Land Cruiser, evoking a sense of off-road spirit in a much smaller package. Toyota underscores the Urban Cruiser’s light off-roading potential with features like Downhill Assist Control and Trail Mode for slippery surfaces.

Still, no one expects the eVitara-based EV to be as capable as a Suzuki Jimny (never mind the Land Cruiser) off the beaten track. After all, Toyota is working on a baby Land Cruiser for more serious off-road applications.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Toyota has used the Urban Cruiser name. It debuted on a 2006 concept, followed by a production model based on the Yaris sold in Europe from 2008 to 2014. That model also had a twin in North America, where it was known as the Scion xD. More recently, Suzuki-built models under the Urban Cruiser name have appeared in global markets, mostly aimed at India and other emerging regions.

A Growing EV Lineup

The Urban Cruiser is just one piece of Toyota’s growing electric strategy in Europe. During the same event in Greece, it sat alongside the facelifted bZ4X (simply called the bZ in North America) and a prototype of the C-HR+, both of which are expected to launch in 2025. Though they share some design language at the front, each model serves a different purpose.

The C-HR+ leans into a more upscale and sporty image, with a coupe-like roofline and sharper styling that positions it at the heart of the C-SUV (compact) segment. It shares a few cues with the standard C-HR but is noticeably larger and bolder. In contrast, the refreshed bZ4X keeps things more family-friendly and adds some light trail capability thanks to its Subaru-sourced X-Mode AWD system.

Toyota plans to round out its European EV portfolio next year with the bZ Woodland, a sibling to the Subaru Trailseeker. That will bring the total to four electric models in the region, quadrupling Toyota’s zero-emission options in just two years.

Having four EVs might seem like a lot for a company whose president has openly questioned their environmental benefits, but some markets are getting even more options. China, for example, offers five electric Toyotas: the bZ3, bZ3X, bZ4X, bZ5, and bZ7.

North America is expected to eventually match that number, though with a different lineup. US buyers will have access to the C-HR+, bZ, bZ Woodland, and an upcoming three-row SUV that will be built locally.

BMW M has confirmed that it’s developing a new halo supercar, one that could revive the spirit of the M1 from the late 1970s. Though the company hasn’t released any official details yet, the news has already sparked creative interpretations. This digital concept channels the same energy as the striking Nazca C2 prototype from the early 1990s, originally penned by Italdesign. There are also clear influences from the BMW i8 and the Vision M Next concept from 2019, both of which serve as recent milestones in BMW’s design evolution.

A Study in Surface and Stance

The BMW Ethos has a dramatic, low-slung stance with a wide footprint. A glass canopy covers the cabin, while partially exposed rear wheels recall the look of vintage Italian exotics. Up front, Ciarcia reimagines BMW’s signature kidney grille with a cleaner, body-colored design and a small, offset BMW badge. According to the designer, the grille pays tribute to BMW classics from the 1950s, like the 503 and 507.

Another highlight is the LED headlights which are integrated within the front intakes, slightly reminiscent of Peugeot‘s 9X8 Le Mans Hypercar. The sculpted fenders are protruding from the rest of the bodywork, contributing to the athletic profile. Ciarcia describes the surfacing as “a contrast of soft and hard volumes”.

Around back, the Ethos features a slim, full-width LED light bar, an active spoiler, and an aggressive diffuser to tie it all together.

Designed With Future Powertrains in Mind

Although the concept doesn’t display any obvious signs of an internal combustion engine, it isn’t imagined as fully electric either. Instead, Ciarcia envisions a hydrogen fuel-cell setup that could deliver performance on par with a modern hypercar, an approach that leaves the door open for alternative propulsion technologies.

To help bring the design to life, the Ethos has been rendered in a Champagne finish and placed in a setting that feels perfectly suited: the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on Lake Como in Italy. It’s the same venue that BMW introduced the limited-production Speedtop shooting brake this year, following the Skytop from 2024 and 2023’s Z4-based Touring Coupe.

When it comes to potential rivals for the Ethos, the designer points to a wide range of high-performance supercars and hypercars, including the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale, Aston Martin Valhalla, and Ferrari F80. Perhaps the closest match, though, would be the rumored all-electric supercar from Mercedes-AMG, previewed in 2023 by the Vision One-Eleven concept.

Wagons may no longer be the default choice for families, but they’re far from forgotten. Skoda remains one of the few manufacturers still committed to the practical, low-slung appeal of the estate format, and it’s about to offer a glimpse of what’s next. At this September’s Munich Auto Show, the company will unveil an electric concept version of the next-gen Octavia Combi.

The upcoming EV was first previewed in 2023 as a “spacious” electric estate, targeting families and business users. It’s expected to measure around 4.7 meters (185 inches) in length. At the time, Skoda also released renderings of a sculpture, hinting at the styling, featuring sharp lines, large wheels, and a sporty wagon silhouette.

Originally scheduled for release in 2026, the new Combi’s launch has been pushed closer to the end of the decade. According to a report from Autocar, the electric wagon will be based on Volkswagen Group’s SSP architecture, the same platform that will underpin the next-generation Volkswagen Golf.

Despite the focus on electrification, the new model won’t directly replace the current Octavia. Skoda plans to continue offering its internal combustion engine lineup, with gasoline, diesel, mild-hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options for those not yet ready to switch to fully electric driving.

Strong Wagon Sales Keep ICE Alive

According to Auto News, the Octavia Combi remains Skoda’s best-selling model in Europe in 2025, even outperforming its hatchback counterpart. From January through May, the wagon version sold 81,353 units, despite a 21 percent drop compared to the same period last year.

The fourth generation of the Octavia was introduced in 2019 and received a mid-lifecycle update in 2024. Skoda will soon add a plug-in hybrid version to the facelifted lineup, giving more options to buyers. Given its continued popularity, it’s likely that the MQB-based Octavia will receive a second facelift before the end of the decade, keeping it in production well past 2030.

Skoda Sells More EVs In Europe Than Tesla

May proved to be a standout month for electric Skodas across Europe. The automaker delivered 14,290 electric vehicles, marking a 181 percent year-over-year increase. This was enough to surpass Tesla, placing Skoda second only to Volkswagen in EV sales for the month. Much of this growth is credited to the addition of the Elroq SUV, which joined the Enyaq and Enyaq Coupe in the brand’s electric lineup.

Looking forward, Skoda has several more EVs in the pipeline. In 2026, the company plans to introduce the Epiq, a compact electric SUV built on the same platform as the VW ID.2 and Cupra Raval. Targeting a starting price of €25,000, the Epiq will serve as an EV alternative to the Fabia, Scala, and Kamiq models, which will remain available with combustion engines for the foreseeable future.

Also expected in 2026 is the production version of the Vision 7S concept, a larger electric SUV positioned above the Elroq and Enyaq. Once launched, it will sit alongside the ICE-powered Kodiaq in Skoda’s SUV portfolio.

Mitsubishi’s European return is starting to take shape in unexpected yet practical ways. After announcing its retreat from the region in 2020 due to mounting losses, the brand has quietly shifted gears. Now, five years later, Mitsubishi is expanding its presence across Europe by tapping into its alliance with Renault, opting for strategic efficiency over in-house development.

That partnership began with the Mitsubishi Colt and ASX, which are essentially Renault Clio and Captur models with new badges. The next phase arrives in September with a fully electric successor to the Eclipse Cross, sharing its platform with the Renault Megane E-Tech crossover.

Following that, Mitsubishi plans to launch a more family-focused model called the Grandis, based on the Renault Symbioz, before the end of the year.

Building Identity in a Shared Platform World

There’s understandable skepticism around badge engineering, but Mitsubishi isn’t ignoring the criticism. Frank Krol, CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Europe, addressed this in a conversation with Auto News. He said the upcoming Eclipse Cross EV will be “much more Mitsubishi” than previous rebadged efforts.

He also emphasized the brand’s intention to bring more own-developed models to Europe. At the moment, the Outlander PHEV is the only vehicle that fits that description.

Still, Krol hinted at another stage of Mitsubishi’s collaboration with Renault for the near future. While he didn’t get into details, this could be a new model based on the next generation of the Renault Clio that is expected to debut before the end of 2025.

Mitsubishi’s target is to grow annual European sales to between 75,000 and 80,000 units, up from 60,879 in 2024. That figure already represented a 44 percent increase over 2023, largely driven by the strong performance of the Renault-derived Colt and ASX.

The Problem And A Possible Answer

Despite some encouraging progress, Mitsubishi’s Renault-based models haven’t been able to offset recent losses. Between January and May 2025, the brand saw a 29 percent drop in European sales. Much of that decline stems from the discontinuation of the Space Star (Mirage) and Eclipse Cross, both of which were pulled from the market after falling short of updated safety regulations.

The departure of the Space Star is especially significant. In 2024, it made up 39 percent of Mitsubishi’s European sales, occupying the crucial entry-level spot in the lineup. Without a replacement in the city car segment, the brand faces a clear gap in its offering.

Kei Cars in Europe? Not So Simple

One potential fix could lie in a European take on Japan’s kei car segment, an idea floated by Stellantis Chairman John Elkann and former Renault CEO Luca de Meo. For Mitsubishi, this approach would tap into its deep kei car know-how without requiring heavy investment in Europe-only models.

As Krol put it, “That would be a good tool to ramp up this industry in terms of electrification.” Still, he was quick to add that bringing kei cars to Europe “sounds easier than it is,” hinting at the regulatory and market hurdles involved.

Mitsubishi is currently active in 20 European markets, with two more under review. That’s a notable drop from the 32 markets it covered in 2019, a decline largely tied to the withdrawal of the L200 pickup from the region. According to Krol, reintroducing the midsize truck in Europe would require an electrified powertrain, which isn’t a commercially viable option given the segment’s limited sales potential.

Earlier this year, Mitsubishi cancelled plans to develop two in-house electric vehicles, choosing instead to focus on hybrids and plug-in hybrids. During a May earnings call, global CEO Takao Kato acknowledged the need for EVs in Europe, but said the company would meet that demand by leveraging products from partner OEMs rather than going it alone.
