Genesis’ New Flagship Looks Like A Giant Minivan

  • The GV90 inches closer to production as a lightly camouflaged prototype has been spied.
  • It’s inspired by the Neolun concept, boasting streamlined styling and a minivan-like shape.
  • Genesis has hinted at a 2026 debut, but delays may push the luxury model’s arrival further.

The Genesis GV90 is entering the homestretch and the bulky camouflage has finally come off. This gives us our best look yet at the upcoming electric vehicle and it appears more like a minivan than a luxurious SUV.

Previewed by the Neolun concept, the production model has an upright front fascia with a large lower intake. The latter appears to be divided into two sections, each featuring a slightly different mesh pattern. They reside below trademark “two-line” headlights and what looks to be a V-shaped accent.

In profile, the GV90 looks like a modern day Dodge Grand Caravan riding on supersized wheels. That’s far from ideal for a luxury brand, but the crossover has a rakish windscreen that flows into a long sloping roof. We can also see a nearly horizontal beltline as well as an expansive greenhouse. They’re joined by flush-mounted door handles, front fender lights, and curvaceous bodywork.

The streamlined styling continues out back with a curvy liftgate that eschews a spoiler. Designers also gave the crossover full-width taillights and a minimalist bumper with a large license plate recess.

Genesis covered the interior in black and white camouflage, so it’s hard to determine what to expect. However, there should be a widescreen infotainment system and plenty of upscale amenities. Speaking of which, previous spy photos have shown a second-row center console with an integrated display as well as a wireless smartphone charger.

Genesis has been tight-lipped about the GV90, but recent rumors have suggested the model has been delayed until the summer of 2026. That remains to be seen, but the crossover could ride on the new eM platform, which is expected to be an evolution of the current E-GMP architecture.

Little else is known about the model, but it should be more advanced than the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9. The latter model starts at $58,955 and features a 110.3 kWh battery pack as well as three different powertrains. The rear-wheel drive variant has 215 hp (160 kW / 218 PS), while the most powerful all-wheel drive model has 422 hp (315 kW / 428 PS). Drivers can also expect ranges of between 311 and 335 miles (501 and 539 km).

Genesis Cranks The Ioniq 5 N Formula Up To 11

  • Genesis is expanding into performance vehicles, starting with the new GV60 Magma.
  • It shares its underpinnings and battery with the Ioniq 5 N but offers more power.
  • A slew of aerodynamic upgrades will be joined by chassis improvements.

Genesis was originally designed to be the luxury division of the Hyundai Group, but now, it’s branching out into performance territory. The brand is even stepping up to compete at Le Mans in the Hypercar class. Their first serious contender in the performance car market? The GV60 Magma, which was spotted doing hot laps at the Nurburgring.

As the debut product of its Magma performance sub-brand, this upcoming model is positioned to be a premium alternative to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and Kia EV6 GT. It’s been in the works for some time and will be based on the facelifted GV60.

The GV60 Magma sets itself apart from the standard GV60 with a more aggressive front fascia, complete with aerodynamic canards on both sides and a larger splitter. As with other recent prototypes, it’s sporting sporty black wheels and bright red brake calipers. In a nod to the future, the Magma features cameras instead of traditional wing mirrors, a feature that’s already available on the current GV60 lineup.

Elsewhere, we can see the fenders have been modified, sporting aero ducts behind the front wheels and behind the rear ones. The Porsche 911 GT3 RS also has similar aero fins behind the front and rear wheels, although they are much larger. Genesis also looks to have taken inspiration from Weissach’s finest by adding aerodynamic strakes to the roof.

Like the Ioniq 5 N and EV6 GT, the GV60 Magma will probably use the same 84 kWh battery pack. The Hyundai tops out at 641 hp from its dual electric motors, while the facelifted EV6 GT out-muscles it slightly with 645 hp. According to our spies, the Genesis may offer up even more grunt, potentially pushing horsepower towards the 700 mark.

Much like its sibling models, the GV60 Magma is expected to include the Virtual Gear Shift function and an engine sound that mimics a traditional internal combustion engine.

Genesis Declares Full-Size War On BMW And Cadillac With EV Muscle

  • GV90 is the production version of the Neolun concept from last year’s New York Show.
  • The electric SUV will likely ride on Genesis’ new eM platform with 800V fast charging.
  • Some versions of the GV90 may feature Rolls Royce-style rear-hinged coach doors.

Breaking into the luxury SUV scene isn’t for the faint-hearted, especially when the playing field is packed with legacy heavyweights ranging from Cadillac, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, to Bentley and its ultra-premium peers. But Genesis, the premium division of the Hyundai Motor Group, thinks it has what it takes to stand out. And it’s not just talking big; it’s building big too.

To make that point even clearer, it is putting the finishing touches on the GV90, its most ambitious electrified SUV to date. Recently spotted in public testing, this flagship SUV looks nearly ready for primetime. With the camouflage only hiding so much, here’s what we know so far.

You’d be right in thinking you’ve seen this somewhere before, as the GV90 was previewed as the Neolun concept at last year’s New York International Auto Show. Unlike many show cars watered down for production, this one has largely stayed the course.

Visually, the GV90 comes in well over five meters long and makes no attempt to hide its size. The front is defined by twin horizontally stacked LED light strips flanking a large, crest-shaped panel. Those lighting elements continue just behind the front fenders, tracing the edge where the clamshell hood meets the front doors. Below, a layered chrome pattern decorates the lower front bumper, with additional brightwork running along the rocker panels and wrapping around the rear of the vehicle.

The bodywork avoids harsh creases or busy design tricks, instead relying on clean surfaces and sheer presence to sell the design. Some variants of the GV90 will be available with Rolls Royce-style coach doors, and the two-tiered LED lighting theme upfront repeats within the taillight clusters in the name of continuity.

A Luxury Outlook

\\

Inside, the GV90 emphasizes luxury and comfort. Spy shots reveal four individual massaging seats, with the second row separated by a substantial center console equipped with cup holders, an inductive mobile phone charger, and a large infotainment display.

Up front, expect a colossal pillar-to-pillar OLED instrument cluster and infotainment display, wireless phone connectivity and a host of convenience features to keep up with the Benz’s. Buyers are said to be able to spec the GV90 with radiant heating and an electrochromic glass roof that can block out the sun in multi-configurable ways. A full suite of level 2 semi-autonomous driving aids will be available.

While it was initially believed that the GV90 might ride on Hyundai’s existing E-GMP platform, shared with models like the Ioniq 5 and Kia EV9, recent reports suggest that Genesis is finishing work on a new, exclusive platform called eM. This advanced 800V architecture supports ultra-fast charging, allowing the GV90 to recharge from 10 to 80 percent in about 20 minutes when connected to a 350-kW DC fast charger.

All-wheel drive will likely come standard, with an electric motor on each axle delivering a combined output of nearly 500 horsepower (368 kW) in base models, with higher figures expected in flagship trims. The GV90 is expected to use a 99.8-kWh battery pack, offering an estimated range of over 300 miles per charge. Larger battery options may also be available, pushing that range even further.

Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology will enable the premium SUV to be a backup power source for homes and electronic devices. Additionally, the GV90 will feature electronically controlled dampers and an advanced torque-vectoring system to optimize traction and handling.

Rivals and Debut

Genesis is aiming straight at the top of the luxury EV market, with the GV90 positioned to take on a growing field of high-end electric SUVs. Key rivals could include the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, Cadillac Escalade IQ, Volvo EX90, BMW iX, and the Lucid Gravity, each bringing its own mix of performance, tech, and brand prestige to the table.

An official debut was originally expected sometime this year, but recent reports out of Korea suggest the timeline has shifted. The reveal may now happen in late 2026, with production scheduled to begin at Hyundai’s dedicated EV facility in Ulsan, South Korea.

BYD’s SUV Rips Off Genesis So Hard You’ll Do A Double Take

  • The BYD Sea Lion 06 is a new electrified SUV from China with styling that feels familiar.
  • Its front end borrows heavily from Genesis, while the rear sports Bentley-inspired taillights.
  • Buyers can choose between single or dual electric motors, or a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

In a sea of reveals at the Shanghai Auto Show, it’s easy to miss a few standout vehicles, especially with the rapid-fire pace of new model debuts. But once the dust settles, a few interesting names float to the surface, one of them being the new BYD Sea Lion 06, a sharp-looking electrified SUV with a front end that feels like it wandered out of a Genesis design studio.

The split LED headlights look straight out of the Korean luxury brand’s playbook, flanking a grille-free nose that closely resembles the refreshed Genesis GV60. But the Sea Lion 06 doesn’t go in for sleek coupe-SUV theatrics. Instead, it opts for a more upright SUV stance that gives it a bit more presence on the road, and maybe a bit more practicality too.

Design Details with Familiar Influences

A few other styling cues stand out, like the wraparound greenhouse and a set of full-width taillights that evolve the design language of the BYD Seal sedan. There’s even a nod to Bentley in the way the rear light bar is shaped, nothing over-the-top, but enough to suggest BYD’s designers have been paying attention to the high-end crowd.

Step inside, and it’s a familiar sight for anyone who’s looked at a modern Chinese EV. The centerpiece is a 15.6-inch infotainment screen mounted to the center of the dash, a setup that’s practically standard at this point. What does break up the usual formula is the floating center console, fitted with metallic-look switchgear that feels like another subtle Genesis reference. As expected from BYD, the Sea Lion 06 comes equipped with its in-house “God’s Eye” advanced driver assistance suite.

Two Powertrains, One Look

BYD

Underneath, the SUV rides on BYD’s updated e-Platform 3.0 Evo. Buyers can choose between a fully electric version or a plug-in hybrid (DM-i). The EV comes in both single-motor rear-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive configurations. Meanwhile, the plug-in hybrid pairs electric drive with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine. Despite these different drivetrains, the exterior remains identical across variants, BYD didn’t even tweak the wheel design for the sake of differentiation.

As suggested by its name, the BYD Sea Lion 06 is positioned under the Sea Lion 07, although the difference in size between them is quite small. More specifically, the 06 measures 4,810 mm (189.4 inches) long, which is only 20 mm (0.8 inches) shorter than the 07. Still, the 2,820 mm (111.0 inches) wheelbase of the 06 is a 110 mm (4.3 inches) shorter than that of the 07.

Even so, the Sea Lion 06 has a bigger footprint than rivals like the Tesla Model Y and the Genesis GV60, and its shape suggests it might be more suited to family duties than some of its sleeker competitors.

As for pricing, BYD is aiming squarely at the value segment. In China, the Sea Lion 06 is expected to land between ¥160,000 and ¥200,000, which translates to roughly $22,000 to $27,500. Whether this electrified SUV makes its way to markets outside China, such as Europe, remains to be seen.

Genesis Sees Room For A G-Class Rival In Its SUV Lineup

  • Genesis hints at a rugged, high-end SUV inspired by the X Gran Equator concept.
  • The model could be sold alongside the upcoming Genesis GV90 flagship SUV.
  • Specifications remain a mystery, but production feasibility has been confirmed.

The Genesis X Gran Equator concept was one of the most buzzed-about reveals at the New York Auto Show. And it looks like it’s more than just a flashy design study. Luc Donckerwolke, Genesis’ Chief Creative Officer and Chief Brand Officer, teased that a production version of this luxury off-roader could soon challenge some of the big names in the game, think Land Rover Defender, Lexus GX, and the Mercedes G-Class.

Is Genesis Going Overboard with SUVs?

Genesis already offers a diverse range of crossovers and SUVs, including the GV60, GV70, GV80, and the GV80 Coupe. Add to that the forthcoming production version of the 2024 Neolun concept – soon to be known as the GV90 – and it might start to feel like they’re churning out more SUVs than we really need. But according to the brand, there’s still room for more.

Speaking to Australian media at the New York Auto Show, Donckerwolke hinted at the potential future of Genesis’ growing SUV lineup. As reported by CarExpert, he said:

“The X Gran Equator is a new potential addition to a lineup which is already quite big. In a couple of years we have reached a family of SUVs. We have shown last year there’s another one coming, a flagship SUV, very soon [GV90]. Now the question is: how do we position the Gran Equator within this lineup? How do we ensure there’s not going to be an overlap or cannibalization between those vehicles? I do believe there’s room for that.”

Genesis Sees Room For A G-Class Rival In Its SUV Lineup

While we don’t yet have details on the X Gran Equator’s platform or powertrain, its rugged features and unique proportions suggest it could offer serious off-road capability, setting it apart from the rest of the Genesis lineup.

Of course, some of the more extreme elements, like the gigantic 24-inch wheels, might be toned down for production, but the concept provides a clear preview of what’s to come. Depending on whether the powertrain is electric, hybrid, or internal combustion, we might see some beefier cooling intakes up front. Features like the four sunroofs, swiveling seats, and split tailgate could also make it into the production version, making for a stylish and practical package.

Hopefully, Genesis designers will retain the analogue-style dials and physical controls inside the luxurious cabin, as these details are a refreshing change in a world full of touchscreens.

Is It Actually Going to Happen?

Donckerwolke has confirmed that the concept is technically feasible: “Basically, the Gran Equator was designed by my team in a very short time. Like all the other projects, I make sure that because of my engineering team being involved in the project that all those projects are feasible, that we don’t have to face any big hurdles if we have to realize that would basically make the project unsuitable. From the technical point of view, the platform works, the technical side works, now it’s obviously the demand.”

Genesis Sees Room For A G-Class Rival In Its SUV Lineup

Judging by the buzz following the concept’s debut, it seems there’s demand aplenty. “Everybody has called and asked, ‘When can I have it?’” Donckerwolke shared. “The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, and we think this is a big step forward. It taps into that SUV emotion and goes back to the off-road capabilities that make these vehicles authentic.”

While Genesis hasn’t set a specific timeline for the Gran Equator’s market launch, we’re guessing it’s still a few years out. Given how long it typically takes to transition a concept into production, don’t hold your breath for anything before 2027. Fingers crossed, the gorgeous X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible concepts will also follow the example of the Neolun and the X Gran Equator in the future.

Genesis Concept Eyes Defender With Sci-Fi Looks And Throwback Analog Interior

  • Genesis has introduced the new X Gran Equator Concept at the New York Auto Show.
  • The concept is an off-road-focused SUV with exaggerated proportions and 24-inch wheels.
  • The interior adopts an analogue design with physical controls instead of oversized screens.

Genesis might have already caught our attention with the G90-based X Gran Coupe and Convertible concepts at the Seoul Mobility Show, but it’s not done yet. For the New York Auto Show, the brand is pulling the wraps off another wild card called the X Gran Equator Concept. This off-road SUV combines a futuristic, clean-cut exterior with a surprisingly retro-styled interior, signaling yet another interesting design experiment from Genesis.

More: Genesis Might Kill Its Cheapest Model But It’s Not Sure What Comes Next

The X Gran Equator debuts the latest take on Genesis’ “Athletic Elegance” design language, now interpreted through what the brand calls the “rugged spirit of overlanding.” That means the SUV rides high on 24-inch beadlock wheels wrapped in aggressive all-terrain tires, with a substantial amount of ground clearance for good measure.

A Different Kind of Genesis SUV

The exaggerated proportions include a short front overhang, an extended hood, and a narrow windshield, giving the X Gran Equator a look that’s a clear departure from last year’s Neolun concept. And while the long dash-to-axle ratio hints at classic luxury proportions, the absence of visible front cooling intakes suggests this is a fully electric vehicle.

True to the Genesis design formula, the lighting signature is defined by two parallel lines at both the front and rear, continuing cleanly into the bodywork. The front bumper houses additional LEDs for better nighttime visibility, while the rear features a sleek, minimal design capped off by a split tailgate. Plastic cladding around the wheel arches and bumpers is present, but subtle, reinforcing the vehicle’s premium look rather than detracting from it.

\\\\\

A Cabin Full of Surprises

Inside, Genesis has gone in a very different direction. There’s no infotainment display in the usual sense and instead, the center of the dashboard features four circular screens that mimic the look of classic analog dials. These are customizable digital displays, and they sit alongside a three-gauge digital instrument cluster with a similarly vintage aesthetic.

Physical controls dominate the cabin. The center console is lined with chunky toggle switches, the steering wheel is packed with buttons, and the stalks are satisfyingly oversized. The four-seat layout includes swiveling front seats, multiple sunroofs, and modular storage throughout. The materials are high-end, with bold color combinations and diagonal stitching patterns that give the cabin a sense of tailored detail.

Off-Road Capabilities, Still a Mystery

There is no word on technical specifications, so we don’t know whether the X Gran Equator was based on a unibody architecture or a ladder frame chassis. Still, the company has hinted at the concept’s off-road capabilities, saying it is “engineered to perform in extreme conditions while maintaining a natural sense of grace”.

\\\\

Will It Actually Be Built?

For now, Genesis says the X Gran Equator Concept is “not confirmed for production.” Still, the automaker has made it clear that design elements like the split tailgate and integrated roof rails are hints at what’s to come. It also points to a broader strategy: expanding further into “lifestyle-oriented vehicles.”

That could mean Genesis is exploring a competitor to the upcoming all-electric Mercedes G-Class or even a zero-emission alternative to the Land Rover Defender.
