VW’s ID. Polo Interior Brings Back Something You Thought Was Gone For Good

VW is finally letting us peek inside the new ID. Polo, revealing its production interior ahead of the electric subcompact’s official debut later this year. The biggest headline? The long-awaited return of actual buttons and switches.

As the first vehicle designed entirely under new VW design chief Andreas Mindt, the ID. Polo marks a shift in direction by blending tactile controls with modern tech in a more user-friendly package. The company has already confirmed that this approach will carry through to other new and updated VW models in the near future.

Buttons Are Back

Gone are the touch sliders and haptic panels that frustrated many owners of the ID.3 and other recent VW models. In their place are proper physical controls, including a knurled volume dial and a traditional four-switch window layout.

The newly designed, squarish steering wheel brings back grouped hard keys for cruise control and infotainment functions, favoring usability over the touch-based gimmickry that has increasingly spread through the industry, especially in the wake of Tesla’s influence.

Mounted directly to the dash, a 10.25-inch digital driver display signals a return to convention, replacing the ID.3’s awkward steering-column-mounted screen. VW says the updated software adds functionality, along with a few nostalgic flourishes. Press a button, and the display shifts to retro-themed graphics that echo the dials and cassette visuals from classic 1980s-era Golfs.

Front and center sits a large 13-inch infotainment touchscreen, and thankfully, it too benefits from the control rethink. Gone are the polarizing touch sliders for volume and temperature. Instead, beneath the screen sits a neat row of physical buttons for HVAC controls and hazard lights. A rotary dial handles volume adjustments and doubles as a track or station selector.

The cabin itself takes on a more inviting feel, with soft recycled fabric replacing the usual expanse of hard, cold plastics across the dashboard, doors, and even the center console. VW has kept its familiar quirk on the pedals, which still feature the play and pause symbols.

Chief Designer Andreas Mindt described the car as “an affordable friend for everyday life”. He added that “clear physical buttons provide stability and trust, warm materials make it appealing, and charming details such as the new retro views of the instruments show the typical Volkswagen wink.”

Platform, Powertrain, and Price

Measuring 159.6 inches (4,053 mm) in length, 71.5 inches (1,816 mm) in width, and 60.2 inches (1,530 mm) in height, with a wheelbase of 102.4 inches (2,600 mm), the new electric Polo shares a similar footprint with its ICE counterpart.

The ID. Polo will launch with a choice of two battery types and three front-mounted motors, delivering outputs of 114 hp (85 kW / 116 PS), 133 hp (99 kW / 135 PS), and 208 hp (155 kW / 211 PS). A more powerful 223 hp GTI version is set to follow the next year.

Battery options include a 37 kWh LFP pack and a more advanced 52 kWh NMC unit with cell-to-pack construction, the latter offering up to 280 miles (450 km) of range. Depending on the specification, charging speeds will range from 90 to 130 kW, with VW’s updated MEB+ platform serving as the base across the lineup.

While Volkswagen has announced a base price of €25,000 (approximately $29,400 at current exchange rates) in Germany, the company recently confirmed that only higher-spec versions will be available at launch across Europe, with initial pricing likely to start closer to €30,000 ($35,300), depending on configuration. There are currently no plans to offer the new subcompact in North America.

VW’s Entry EV Packs More Power And Space Than You’d Think

Volkswagen has released a slew of details about the ID. Polo, ahead of its launch next year. The company has a lot riding on its success, as it’s the first of four compact electric models that VW believes will reshape its small car lineup.

Since we’ve already seen camouflaged prototypes at the Munich Motor Show, we’ll simply note the car has a “Pure Positive” design that promises to offer space worthy of the “next higher class of vehicle.”

In this case, the car measures 159.6 inches (4,053 mm) long, 71.5 inches (1,816 mm) wide, and 60.2 inches (1,530 mm) tall with a wheelbase spanning 102.4 inches (2,600 mm). Volkswagen noted this is roughly the same size as the MQB-based Polo, but the interior is 0.7 inches (19 mm) longer with a lot of that helping to improve rear seat legroom. There’s also more headroom as well as extra interior width.

Practicality gets a noticeable lift in the boot as well. The ID. Polo offers more cargo room than the ICE-powered model. It holds 15.4 cubic feet (435 liters) of luggage, but that can be expanded to 43.9 cubic feet (1,243 liters) by folding the rear seats down.

Three Powertrains at Launch

When the ID. Polo debuts next spring, it will be offered with three front-mounted motors. They’ll have outputs of 114 hp (85 kW / 116 PS), 133 hp (99 kW / 135 PS), and 208 hp (155 kW / 211 PS). The ID. Polo GTI will arrive one year later with 223 hp (166 kW / 226 PS).

The 114 hp (85 kW / 116 PS) and 133 hp (99 kW / 135 PS) variants will come equipped with a small 37 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. These versions will also have an underwhelming DC fast charging capacity of 90 kW.

The two range-topping variants up the ante with a larger 52 kWh nickel manganese cobalt battery, which promises to deliver up to 280 miles (450 km) of range.

Volkswagen went on to say the battery uses cell-to-pack technology, which “eliminates the intermediate step via module housings and combines the cells directly into a battery pack – reducing price, installation space, and weight while increasing energy density by about 10 percent.”

It’s also worth mentioning buyers will find an upgraded DC fast charging capability of 130 kW.

New Platform and Tech

The ID. Polo rides on the new MEB+ platform, which is described as a “further developed” version of the existing architecture. It benefits from reduced complexity, higher efficiency, and less weight.

Volkswagen also said we can expect next-generation driver assistance systems including a “significantly enhanced” version of Travel Assist. It provides “assisted lateral and longitudinal guidance” as well as automated lane changes on highways. The system also has traffic light and stop sign recognition.

According to Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Schäfer, “The ID. Polo marks the beginning of a new generation of Volkswagen: with fresh design, intuitive operation, top quality and first-class driving characteristics – and finally with a proper name again.” He added the company will launch six new electric vehicles next year and the ID. Polo’s €25,000 ($29,388) starting price will make “electric mobility accessible to many people in Europe.”

Ford Quietly Ends Focus Production After 27 Years Without Even Saying Goodbye

Ford’s war on cars has claimed another victim and this time it’s the Focus. While the model exited North America in 2018, it has survived overseas.

Unfortunately, the grim reaper has returned as the final Focus has reportedly rolled off the assembly line in Saarlouis, Germany. Ford hasn’t officially announced the end of production, but workers have been morning the loss of the car by describing its death as “painful” and “sad.”

Even worse, the future of the Saarlouis plant looks bleak. Two years ago, Ford said they “conducted an extensive search” for a suitor and signed a non-binding agreement with a potential investor in June of 2023. However, the unnamed investor dropped out following a “rigorous due diligence process and negotiation.”

Ford Europe’s Future Comes Into Focus

The Focus’ death is the latest blow to the company’s European arm, which has seen sales plummet in recent years. There have also been painful job cuts as well as a disastrous collaboration with Volkswagen.

Amid this background, Ford of Europe has a new president with tough decisions to make. Autonews said Jim Baumbick will need to decide if the company’s new Universal EV Platform, which will be launched on a mid-size truck, would make sense for Europe.

If he rules that out, the publication suggested Baumbick could double-down on the Volkswagen partnership. In particular, they suggested Ford could potentially offer a new Fiesta based on the ID. Polo. The latter rides on the new MEB Entry platform and is targeted to cost less than €25,000 ($28,973).

While it remains to be seen if that idea will come to fruition, Ford has already announced plans for a new “multi-energy” vehicle that will be built in Valencia, Spain. Previous reports have suggested the mystery model will arrive in 2027 and be a Focus-sized crossover.

The model is rumored to be built alongside the Kuga and will reportedly share some components to help keep costs down. The crossover is also expected to offer hybrid and electric powertrains.
