Mazda Priced Its New CX-6e At $20,500 In China And Nearly Double That In Australia

  • The CX-6e comes exclusively with a 78 kWh battery and a rear motor.
  • Mazda Australia will sell the CX-6e in GT and Azami configurations.
  • Customer deliveries of the all-electric SUV will start in September.

As more Chinese-built EVs make their way into global markets, legacy brands are starting to blur traditional pricing expectations. Just a few months after Hyundai began selling its China-made Elexio in Australia, Mazda has launched its only all-electric SUV in the country, also built in China. The new CX-6e is positioned as a direct rival to the Tesla Model Y and undercuts it on price, although there is no dual-motor version available.

The CX-6e is produced in China through the Changan Mazda joint venture and is closely related to the Deepal S07, which is already sold in Australia. Pricing for the entry-level GT starts at AU$53,990 (equal to US$38,000 at current rates) before on-road costs.

While it’s cheaper than the base Tesla Model Y Premium RWD that starts at AU$58,900 (US$41,500), it’s also nearly twice as expensive as the same model in China. There, the entry-level CX-6e EV starts at 139,900 yuan (US$20,500 or AU$28,900).

Chinese buyers also benefit from a lower entry point thanks to a range-extended version. It pairs a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a smaller 31.7 kWh battery, effectively using the engine as a generator. That variant starts at 129,900 yuan (US$19,000 or AU$26,900), though it isn’t offered in Australia.

For their money, Australian buyers will get a sharp-looking SUV with a 78 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery and a rear-mounted electric motor with 255 hp (190 kW) and 214 lb-ft (290 Nm). Key features of the CX-6e GT include a huge 26.45-inch central infotainment and passenger display, 19-inch alloy wheels, radar cruise control, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a 23-speaker audio system.

Tech-Filled, And Cheap

Those with a little more money to spend can opt for the CX-6e Azami, priced from AU$56,990 (US$40,100). It includes the same powertrain but adds digital wing mirrors, a digital rearview mirror, and 21-inch alloy wheels.

Both models have a claimed driving range of 301 miles (484 km) over the combined cycle. Mazda Australia hasn’t published the CX-6e’s peak DC charging speed, but notes the battery can be charged from 30-80 percent in 15 minutes, which is decent yet far from class-leading.

No doubt in a bid to help boost early interest in the SUV, the first 1,000 Australian customers who pre-order the CX-6e GT will receive a complimentary upgrade to the Azami. There is only one optional package, a Warm Beige interior trim available on both variants for AU$1,000 ($700).

A Hyundai Beat The BMW M2 CS For World Performance Car Of The Year

  • BMW’s iX3 took home two trophies at the 2026 World Car Awards.
  • Lucid’s Gravity SUV beat the Cadillac Vistiq for a major global title.
  • Gas-powered cars didn’t win a single category at this year’s event.

Electric vehicles have dominated the World Car Awards as they’ve won every single category this year. This is hardly surprising as many of the finalists were EVs, but it likely won’t alleviate criticism.

Top honors went to the BMW iX3 which was named 2026 World Car of the Year as well as World Electric Vehicle. In the former category, it beat out the redesigned Hyundai Palisade and Nissan Leaf. The Leaf was also up for being named World Electric Vehicle, but it and the Mercedes CLA lost to the German crossover.

Speaking of luxury brands, the Lucid Gravity was named World Luxury Car. The electric crossover, which offers up to 450 miles (724 km) of range, bested the Cadillac Vistiq and Volvo ES90.

That brings us to the most controversial award, which is World Performance Car. Here, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 N beat the BMW M2 CS and Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray.

\\\\\\\\\\\

While a 641 hp (478 kW / 650 PS) Hyundai is certainly impressive, is it really more of a performance car than a 523 hp (390 kW / 530 PS) coupe that accelerates from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 3.7 seconds and laps the Nordschleife in 7:25.534? The E-Ray, on the other hand, has all-wheel drive, an EV-only mode, and a combined output of 655 hp (488 kW / 664 PS).

Since you’re probably still stewing over that, we’ll finish up with the two categories little care about. World Urban Car went to the Nio Firefly, which beat out the Hyundai Venue as well as the Baojun Yep Plus / Chevrolet Spark EUV.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

There’s also World Car Design of the Year, which was apparently decided by Mr. Magoo. The Mazda 6e / EZ-6 took home the prize as it won over the Kia PV5 and Volvo ES90. None of them are particularly pretty, but the 6e isn’t too shabby and the finalists were chosen by a design panel of people you’ve probably never heard of before.

Mazda’s 600 HP Pickup Idea Starts With A Chinese Truck That Doesn’t Behave Like One

  • Mazda is reportedly exploring a deeper tie-up with Changan.
  • The two already share a joint venture, offering the EZ-6 and EZ-60.
  • It’s reportedly considering a rebadge the Deepal E07 for its lineup.

Mazda isn’t ruling out a possible entry into the super-pickup sphere with a 600 hp (440kW) offering, but there’s a big caveat. If it does move forward, the result would be anything but a traditional Mazda. The idea, at least in its early form, centers on a rapid rebadge of the Deepal E07 transforming truck from China. Picture something closer to a Cybertruck-style ute than anything currently wearing a Mazda badge.

Changan, Deepal’s parent company, already maintains a close working relationship with Mazda. Through their joint venture in China, the Mazda 6e (also known as the EZ-6) sedan is produced by Changan and based on the Deepal L07. The upcoming Mazda CX-6e (EZ-60) SUV will also be manufactured in China.

Another Chinese-Based EV

The timing makes sense. Electric and plug-in hybrid pickups have been garnering more attention in markets like Australia, where buyers are in search of something functional, yet at the same time want something exciting to drive around. The fact that powerful pickups have a great amount of interest has already been shown by other manufacturers, such as BYD with the Shark 6, and the plug-in hybrid Ford Ranger.

While Mazda has made its reputation for efficiency and clever engineering, especially with its Skyactiv technology, they don’t have an in-house developed ute or pickup, with the BT-50 workhouse based on the Isuzu D-Max. It would also do no harm to Mazda’s overall EV lineup, while offering a way to offset CO2 penalties.

But a ute producing about 600 hp (440 kW) would take things in a very different direction. While it’s not a current priority, Hiroshi Ozawa, General Manager of the Changan Mazda Automobile Technical Development Center, won’t rule out the possibility.

“My personal view is that Deepal E07 that pick up, the truck [that] opens up, it’s a very interesting vehicle,” said Ozawa, speaking to Carsales. “I like that kind of vehicle… In Australia I think customers may also like the kind of vehicle.”

Is The E07’s Time Now?

\\\\\\\\\\\\\

The Deepal E07 hasn’t had much attention outside of China, but it is already available in Australia, as well as other parts of South Asia. To bring you up to speed, it’s not a pickup in the traditional sense. The E07 is dubbed by the brand as a “transformer,” able to operate as both an SUV and a pickup, with a retractable glass portion revealing a bed.

It can be configured in either a single-motor rear-wheel-drive layout or an all-wheel-drive dual-motor version. Both versions are powered by a 90kWh battery, with a claimed range of up to 550km. That top-spec dual-motor AWD version can dispatch 0-100 km/h (0-96 mph) in just 3.9 seconds thanks to its 440 kW (590 hp) output.

At this stage, there’s no official word on whether the E07 will be getting the green light as a Mazda. Still, the fact that the company is openly discussing the potential of super ute shows that it’s thinking outside of its usual boundaries.
