Jaguar’s Type 00 Was Wild, The Production GT Could Take A Step Back

The Jaguar GT has been teased for what feels like an eternity, but the finish line is finally in sight. Jaguar shocked the world with the release of its wild Type 00 Concept, created to preview its upcoming flagship EV. Recent prototypes of this car have shown it will take key design inspiration from the study, but morph into a slightly more restrained four-door sedan.

With the September reveal drawing closer, a new set of renderings attempt to offer a glimpse at what the production version could look like. That said, the heavily camouflaged prototypes have kept key details well hidden, making it tricky to pin down exactly how far Jaguar will dial things back from the concept.

These new renderings, created by Nikita Chuyko for Kolesa, hint at a softened approach up front. The dramatic lighting signature gives way to more conventional LED headlights, paired with a cleaner, more familiar nose where a traditional grille would typically sit. There is still some flair, including an illuminated Jaguar badge, though the bumper trades concept-car aggression for smoother, more restrained curves.

The softer, more fluid treatment carries along the sides, where clean door skins replace the Type 00’s sharp shoulder line. Like a Porsche Taycan, charging flaps have been added to both front quarter panels, and there are also pop-out door handles. At the rear, a simple full-width LED lightbar stretches across the car, and while these renderings show a conventional rear window, from what we’ve heard, the production model may ultimately do without one.

Another detail worth noting, at least in prototype form, is that the GT appears to wear flared front and rear fenders that are absent from these illustrations, along with edgier detailing than seen here.

We also recently caught our first look at the interior, which places the driver in a cocooned position, framed by a tall center console and low-slung seats. The cabin leans into crisp lines and defined edges, anchored by an all-new steering wheel that looks lifted from a 1970s concept car. The dashboard is pared back, with a curved screen and digital gauge cluster taking over the role of traditional dials.

What Powers The Electric GT?

Beyond the car’s design, we know it will sport a large 120 kWh battery pack that should give it about 435 miles (700 km) of range on the WLTP cycle. It’ll support ultra-fast charging, too, meaning 200 miles (322 km) of range will be added in as little as 15 minutes.

The Jaguar Type 00 Concept

Power comes from three electric motors drawing on that battery. Combined output is expected to be north of 986 hp and 959 lb-ft (1,300 Nm) of torque. None of which is exotic by current EV standards, but the Jaguar should still feel properly rapid, despite tipping the scales at as much as 5,952 lbs (2,700 kg).

Jaguar itself is targeting a 0-62mph (100km/h) time of around three seconds, a 155mph (250 km/h) top speed, and 350kW peak charging. Pricing is expected to start around $160,000, with sales beginning in 2027.

Jaguar Wants To Rival Bentley, But GT’s Cabin Goes In A Different Direction Entirely

Jaguar’s controversial EV is edging closer to a September reveal, and while its exterior remains concealed under camouflage, the company has now offered a first look inside. It marks a clear departure from anything the brand has produced before. As expected, the cabin design doesn’t follow familiar Jaguar themes.

As development enters its final phase, Jaguar recently invited a small group of journalists and social creators to get behind the wheel of the EV, currently referred to as the GT, though the final name has yet to be confiremd. The exterior is expected to closely mirror the divisive Type 00 Concept, though the production car has evolved from a two-door coupe into a four-door sedan.

With the exterior leaning heavily on straight lines and sharp edges, the interior was always going to follow suit. These photos confirm it, revealing an all-new steering wheel that looks like it could have rolled straight out of a 1970s or 1980s concept car. It features thick horizontal spokes, each packed with large touch-sensitive surfaces handling a wide range of functions.

Stalks, But Not Normal Stalks

It’s hard to say with certainty, but it appears these could be touch-sensitive or haptic-style buttons, rather than physical ones, which is a shame but a sign of the times. Positioned on the left are controls for making calls and the car’s voice function, while the cruise control settings appear on the right. The airbag module also sits lower than normal.

Positioned behind the steering wheel are two large stalks, also with a squared-off design. The one on the left appears to control the lights, turn signals, and windshield wipers, while the right stalk houses Reverse, Neutral, Drive, and Park. While Jaguar wants to rival Bentley, the dash appears quite minimal, with a large, curved infotainment screen and gauge cluster, free of any physical dials.

What About Performance?

Beyond the cabin, we know Jaguar’s new GT is based on the company’s Electric Architecture and tips the scales at about 2,700 kg (5,962 lbs). To help somewhat offset that weight, it’ll be fitted with three electric motors delivering more than 986 hp and 959 lb-ft (1,300 Nm) of torque.

As for driving impressions, Andrew Frankel from The Intercooler notes that it doesn’t offer the same kind of bonkers performance as a Tesla Model S Plaid and has been configured for smooth, progressive performance.

Jaguar has begun sketching out what comes next, offering fresh details on the new four-door GT that will usher in its all-electric era. The production EV is set to debut in September, pitched as a modern tribute to the brand’s most celebrated grand tourers, even as it marks a clean break from them.

To show that the move to a zero-emission powertrain won’t dull the experience, the company went digging through its archives. Jaguar engineers ran what they call a “Spirit of Jaguar Drive” evaluation, benchmarking the new GT against the XK120, E-Type, XJS, and the XJ Series I.

What stands out is the timeframe. Every benchmark model comes from between 1948 and 1975, with nothing from Jaguar’s more recent past making the cut, a telling choice about where the brand sees its identity, something that could just as easily apply to the as-yet unnamed EV.

Jaguar says the new GT’s character leans heavily on the V12-powered XJ Coupe, aiming to balance pace with refinement. Vehicle Engineering Director Matt Becker insists that familiar duality remains intact, describing a blend of performance and comfort that sits in what he calls “perfect harmony.”

Jaguar Drops The Curves And Starts Over

In terms of styling, the new Jag leans heavily on the Type 00 concept, now stretched into a four-door form. It marks a clean break from the past, ditching the brand’s familiar curves in favor of ultra-simple lines and flat, almost architectural surfacing. Even so, the long hood, low stance, oversized alloys, and sleek, aerodynamic roofline still give it the kind of proportions you’d expect from a proper rear-drive sedan.

The company also confirmed that the GT’s “cosseting cabin” will follow a “shrink around the driver” philosophy, echoing the approach first seen in the XK120.

Electric Underpinnings

The new luxury sedan will ride on Jaguar’s new Electric Architecture. At its core sits a tri-motor powertrain producing more than 986 hp (735 kW / 1,000 PS) and a hefty 1,300 Nm (959 lb-ft) of torque. That kind of output demands more than brute force alone. To keep it all in check, Jaguar has developed its own in-house torque vectoring software, fine-tuning how power is distributed.

The GT will ride on a dynamic air suspension setup with twin-valve active dampers, engineered to keep its rumored 2,700 kg (5,952 lbs) mass in check. That’s no small ask, though it gives a sense of the kind of grand touring brief Jaguar is chasing here.

Power comes from a substantial 120 kWh battery pack, targeting roughly 700 km (435 miles) of WLTP range, or about 400 miles on the EPA cycle. Hook it up to a 350 kW fast charger, and the numbers start to look properly competitive, with 322 km (200 miles) of range added in under 15 minutes.

Jaguar says it has put the car through its paces in extreme real-world conditions across the globe, alongside extensive digital testing. The company, which infamously halted production of its entire lineup to make room for a clean-sheet reset, hopes everything will be ready for the big launch in September 2026.

Jaguar’s radical pivot to electric vehicles, anchored by a four-door GT sedan, has proven deeply controversial. And once you learn about some of the planned future Jaguar models that had to be killed to make way for the Type 00, you may deride Jaguar’s EV shift even more.

For years, it was known that Jaguar had been developing an all-new XJ before abruptly changing course, cancelling the project mere months before it was ready. The car was going to be electric, but the platform was flexible enough to support a six-cylinder engine if the market demanded it.

In a recent chat on the Road to Success Podcast, Jaguar’s former design director Ian Callum revealed he had also designed a new XF sedan and an F-Pace SUV before departing the company in 2019. Both were scrapped to clear the path for the Type 00. The most painful revelation, perhaps, is that a successor to the F-Type was also in development.

Callum didn’t say how far work on a second-generation F-Type had progressed when he left. He considers the original one of the last great Jaguars, before the company’s strategy shifted beneath it. At a time when sleek, front-engined two-door sports cars are disappearing from the market, losing the F-Type to make room for a grand touring EV is a difficult pill to swallow.

Speaking about the company’s new EV, Callum described it as a “handsome car,” adding that “it’s bold, it’s brave, and it’s got a lot of good design attributes about it, but it’s not beautiful and Jaguars need to be beautiful.” He also said the Type 00 is “too retro.”

What Can We Expect From The Type 00?

Jaguar wants to establish itself as a legitimate rival to Bentley and Rolls-Royce with the Type 00, abandoning its pursuit of volume sales and chasing the likes of BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz. The production model will stick true to the concept’s radical design, though it will add two extra doors and have a longer wheelbase.

Power comes from three motors, a 350 hp unit up front and two at the rear producing a combined 950hp, with Jaguar promising at least 1,000 hp total along with just over 1,000lb ft of torque. According to Top Gear, that translates to a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint in around 3.3 seconds, a limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h), and a driving range of approximately 430 miles (692 km).

Jaguar’s electric rebirth is running behind schedule, but new details are starting to emerge about their four-door GT. It’s slated to debut later this year and the company has promised it will be “fearlessly unique and emotionally engaging.”

While that remains to be seen, Evo recently took a spin in a prototype and shared an assortment of specifications. They’re reporting the model will measure around 204.7 inches (5,200 mm) long, which would slot it between the short- and long-wheelbase XJ. The latter variant measured 206.9 inches (5,255 mm) long, while the shorter version came in at 202 inches (5,130 mm).

The luxury sedan will ride on the 850-volt Jaguar Electrical Architecture and feature a tri-motor powertrain with two motors mounted at the rear, enabling torque vectoring. Combined output is said to exceed 1,000 hp (746 kW / 1,014 PS) with around 1,000 lb-ft (1,354 Nm) of torque. That should make the flagship blisteringly quick, with 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) reportedly arriving in the low three-second range.

While the beefy battery ensures a healthy range, it also means the car weighs around 5,952 lbs (2,700 kg). That’s around 2,039 lbs (925 kg) more than the old XJ LWB 3.0 Supercharged. It’s also worth noting the model will weigh about as much as the BMW i7 xDrive60, which tips the scales at 5,986 lbs (2,715 kg).

The publication goes on to say the car has a twin-chamber air suspension with Bilstein adaptive dampers as well as three drive modes known as Comfort, Dynamic, and Rain/Snow/Ice. They added most of the hard work is already done, but the software tuning is only 75-80% complete. That likely explains why the car missed its originally scheduled debut of late last year.
