Should Jeep Follow Ram’s Lead And Kill The Recon EV?

  • The Jeep Recon is scheduled to arrive later this year.
  • However, it will land right as EV demand evaporates.
  • This has us questioning whether Jeep should pull the plug.

Last Friday, Ram did the unthinkable by killing their fully electric 1500 REV. The truck was originally supposed to be launched in late 2024, before it was delayed and eventually axed altogether.

At the time, the company pointed to slowing demand for full-size battery-electric trucks in North America. That’s a not so subtle reference to lackluster sales of rivals such as the Chevrolet Silverado EV, Ford F-150 Lightning, and Tesla Cybertruck.

This has us wondering why stop there? The Jeep Recon EV is slated to arrive later this year and no one seems particularly interested. This is hardly surprising as sales of the Wagoneer S have been dreadful.

Second quarter sales shot up to 3,668 units and that brought year-to-date Wagoneer S sales to 6,263 vehicles. That trails the Ford Mustang Mach-E by a considerable margin as the Blue Oval moved 10,178 crossovers in Q2 as well as 21,785 in the first six months of the year. It also goes without saying that massive discounts were needed to help move inventory.

All of this is pointing to a sales disaster for the upcoming Recon. Making matters even worse, it will arrive just after the $7,500 federal tax credit expires on September 30. That’s terrible timing and EV sales are expected to drop significantly once the incentive goes away.

This has us questioning if Jeep should follow Ram’s lead and kill the Recon. There’s no easy answer and the company hasn’t said much about the model since February.

While the electric crossover is expected to have a lot in common with the Wagoneer S, Jeep has previously confirmed plans for a Trail Rated Moab trim. The brand has also mentioned an assortment of off-road packages that will enable drivers to “follow a path with no roads at all.” In particular, we can expect a Selec-Terrain traction management system, e-locker axle technology, under-body protection, and aggressive off-road tires.

More notably, the Recon will offer removable doors and a one-touch power roof. This should help the model to stand out, but will that be enough to get people to buy it?

Only time will tell, but the crossover is expected to ride on the STLA Large platform and share powertrains with the Wagoneer S. This means we can likely expect a 100.5 kWh battery pack and a dual-motor all-wheel drive system. The latter could have outputs of 500 hp (373 kW / 507 PS) and 600 hp (447 kW / 608 PS) as well as a range of around 300 miles (483 km).

Police Stop Grown Man Driving Kids’ Barbie Jeep And Somehow It Only Gets Worse

  • A man drove a Power Wheels Jeep on the road in traffic and police arrested him.
  • Authorities confirmed he had a suspended license and was driving under the influence.
  • His license is now further suspended as he awaits a court date set for December.

The Jeep Wrangler hangs its reputation on its ability to go just about anywhere. Of course, that reputation is also why it’s a popular choice for those buying Power Wheels electric cars for kids. Put an adult in the Barbie Jammin’ Jeep Wrangler from Power Wheels and it turns out that there are plenty of places the vehicle can’t go. In the case of this story, rush hour traffic, to be specific.

On September 5, Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers found a man piloting a Barbie Jeep down Fifteenth Ave near Nicholson Street. They stopped him, and he revealed that he wanted a Slurpee but “got lazy,” so he borrowed his roommate’s kid’s Barbie Jeep to make the trip.

As pointed out by Road&Track that brought the story to our attention, the man, 40-year-old Kasper Lincoln, reportedly showed signs of impairment and had a suspended driver’s license.

Over the Limit at 5 MPH

According to CBC News, officers administered two breath tests and confirmed that he was over the legal limit at the time. Let me remind you, it was morning, specifically, 9 a.m. The string of excellent decisions here is uncanny. For example, the Barbie Jeep in question is capable of no more than 5 mph (8 km/h). Only kids aged 3 to 7 are supposed to pilot it, and at most, it should carry no more than 130 pounds.

Lincoln, who was wearing a shirt that reportedly read “Let’s Do It The Dumbest Way Possible.” Likely exceeded the weight limit and likely reduced both the intended speed and range of the toy. As such, it’s questionable whether or not he would’ve even made it to his destination and back without having to drag the toy along at some point.

He told the news station that he had no idea what he was doing was illegal and that he used the sidewalk for most of the trip before getting stopped. At this point, his driver’s license is now suspended for a further 90 days beyond the initial suspension he was already under. He’s also got a court date for December, where he’ll face a charge of prohibited driving.

Some Charger Daytona And Jeep EVs Can Move In Park And That’s Not A Feature

  • Some affected EVs may roll too far when parked, creating potential safety concerns.
  • The recall involves 26 Wagoneer S and 49 Charger Daytona EVs built since August.
  • A second recall targets 8 Wagoneer S units with an interior crash safety issue.

Automakers tend to dread recalls, but for FCA US, the latest round is a relatively small headache. Fewer than 100 vehicles are affected, though the fixes are important enough to warrant quick attention. The Jeep Wagoneer S was hit with two separate recalls on the same day, while the Dodge Charger Daytona was pulled into one of them as well.

In both cases, FCA says it has not received reports of crashes or injuries, but dealers have been instructed to carry out repairs at no cost to owners.

Rollaway Risk

The larger of the two recalls involves 26 Jeep Wagoneer S SUVs built between August 9, 2024, and March 18, 2025, along with 49 Dodge Charger Daytona models manufactured from August 2, 2024, through April 3, 2025.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the issue lies with the Electric Drive Module, which may have been fitted with a Park Pawl Return Spring that wasn’t installed correctly. Federal safety rules require that a vehicle in Park should not roll more than 5.9 inches, or 150 millimeters, on a 10 percent grade with all brakes released. In this case, both the Wagoneer S and Charger Daytona can exceed that threshold, raising the possibility of an unintended rollaway.

Owners should be informed of the recall on September 25. FCA says that dealerships will replace the Electric Drive Module of all vehicles.

Interior structure concern

The second recall is limited to the 2025 Jeep Wagoneer S, impacting just eight units built on January 31, 2025. These electric SUVs may have been assembled with an incorrect cross car beam in the instrument panel. In the event of a crash, this could compromise the intended load distribution, increasing the risk of injury “in certain crashes.”

An investigation into the potential issue was opened on July 1, and by late August, the scope of vehicles impacted had been determined.

FCA will alert impacted owners to the recall from October 24, and dealerships have been instructed to replace the instrument panel cross car beam free of charge.
