Someone At Mercedes Decided The GLC Needed Over 900 HP And A Trick Spoiler

  • A tri-motor system could give the Mercedes-AMG GLC over 900 hp.
  • Spy shots show the tester with an active roof-mounted spoiler.
  • New battery cells could allow the SUV to charge at up to 400 kW.

Thanks to a new platform, more advanced batteries, and better electric motors, the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLC EQ is shaping up to be the firm’s most capable EV yet, at least based on early impressions. With a credible rival to the BMW iX3, along with increasing competition from Chinese EVs, Mercedes is clearly intent on expanding its electric GLC lineup.

Just a single version of the SUV has been unveiled so far, officially known as the GLC 400 4Matic with EQ Technology, producing 483 hp thanks to a pair of electric motors. In times gone by, that figure would have been enough for an AMG badge, but things have changed, and EV buyers now expect supercar-levels of performance.

Mercedes’ solution will be a proper AMG version of the GLC EQ. Pictured in these spy shots, the SUV will combine more menacing looks with significant performance gains, pushing it into a whole new stratosphere.

Design Changes

This prototype, pictured in a deep shade of matte black, has camouflage across its front and rear, hiding some of the changes being made. Chief among these will be a more aggressive front bumper, tweaked air intakes, and a new grille. You’ll also notice it is sitting on a set of new blacked-out wheels with upgraded cross-drilled brake rotors and beefed-up calipers.

Perhaps the most intriguing detail is at the rear, where an active spoiler appears to be part of the package. Normally it would sit flush when parked, but this prototype was caught with it fully raised, giving a clear look at what’s to come. With the kind of power it promises to offer, there will be no shortage of airflow for it to work with.

Further down, the taillights should carry over from the standard electric GLC, but a new rear bumper will tie the look together with the revised front end.

Supercar Power

According to sources, the AMG version of the GLC will follow the same path as the GT 4-Door EV and the brand’s dedicated electric SUV, pairing three of YASA’s advanced axial-flux motors. The target is over 900 hp, which should be enough to reach 60 mph (96 km/h) in under three seconds.

Elsewhere, the AMG model could use new prismatic battery cells, rather than the cylindrical ones of the standard GLC, improving power density and thermal performance. These cells may also enable DC fast-charging speeds of up to 400 kW, an improvement over the standard SUV’s 330 kW, and matching the iX3.

As for when it will debut, there’s a good chance it breaks cover this fall at the Paris Motor Show in October, with sales likely to follow not long after.

Our First Look At The Mercedes Built To Fix Everything Wrong With The AMG EQE

  • The Mercedes-AMG E-Class EQ has been spied for the first time.
  • It replaces the AMG EQE and sports a more traditional design.
  • Car could have a tri-motor powertrain with around 900 hp.

Spy photographers have snapped the Mercedes E-Class EQ on multiple occasions and now they’ve gotten the first glimpse of the AMG variant. It’ll replace the slow-selling AMG EQE and feature a more conventional, and arguably safer, design direction.

Speaking of which, we can see the car will have a fully enclosed grille that should echo the one found on the C-Class and GLC EQs. We can also expect a sporty front bumper as well as star-infused headlights on the production model.

Moving further back, there are lightweight AMG wheels that are backed up by a high-performance braking system with cross drilled discs. Designers also gave the car streamlined bodywork and a more traditional sedan silhouette. A closer inspection reveals extended fender flares, which likely hint at a wider track.

Elsewhere, the early prototype has a makeshift rear spoiler and temporary taillights. We can also get a glimpse of a sportier rear diffuser.

Spy photographers haven’t gotten a good look inside the E-Class EQ, but the model could follow in the footsteps of the electric GLC. If that’s the case, we can expect a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14-inch infotainment system. The crossover also offers an MBUX Superscreen, which adds a 14-inch front passenger display. If that isn’t enough digital real estate, the MBUX Hyperscreen boasts a 39.1-inch display that spans the width of the dashboard.

Performance specifications remain a mystery, but the model will ride on the MB.EA platform and have a lot in common with the GLC EV. The crossover’s AMG variant is rumored to have three Yasa axial flux motors developing as much as 939 hp (700 kW / 952 PS).

That sounds like overkill, but there’s little doubt the upcoming model will easily eclipse the AMG EQE. As a refresher, it has a 90.6 kWh battery pack as well as a dual-motor all-wheel drive system producing a combined output of up to 668 hp (498 kW / 677 PS) and 738 lb-ft (1,000 Nm) of torque. This enables the model to rocket from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 3.2 seconds, but the car has a dismal EPA range of 220 miles (354 km).

AMG Plots V8 Comeback With Wild 646-HP CLE 63 And GT Black Series

  • Mercedes-AMG’s track-ready CLE 63 will make 646 hp, new report claims.
  • Future lineup, including crossover EVs and G63 cabrio, was revealed to dealers.
  • North America is targeted as growth engine while China demand flattens out.

Mercedes-AMG might be talking a big EV game, but behind closed doors, it’s the return of a fire-breathing V8 that’s really getting hearts racing.

One of the biggest, rarest stars of the coming model blitz is the new CLE 63, and AMG isn’t playing it safe. Just 30 examples will reportedly be built worldwide, each believed to be equipped with a seriously spicy version of Benz’s new flat-plane crank V8. The intel claims an output of 646 hp (655 PS), though since the Germans love their nice round kW figures, we suspect it could be 637 SAE hp, which would be 475 kW or 646 PS.

Whatever the true number, enthusiasts will be thrilled to see it debut after the whole four-cylinder C63 experiment fell flat on its face. And this AMG-ized version of the V8, already doing business in the latest S-Class, won’t be restricted to just 30 CLE hot rods. It’s expected to spread across the lineup, potentially finding its way into future models, like the next C 63 sedan. Hopefully it’ll find its way into the new two-door GT Black Series that the same report also says is coming.

What Are AMG’s New EVs?

Of course, AMG isn’t ditching electrification. Far from it. Dealers were shown a trio of upcoming electric GT models, according to Auto News, including the sleek four-door GT coupe and two crossovers riding on a dedicated AMG platform. One has a stance similar to a Cayenne, while the other sits lower with a sportier, sloping roofline.

They sound quick, with strong range figures in the region of 400 miles (644 km) of range for the coupe and at least 300 (483 km) for the utilities, but not everyone’s convinced. Some dealers are already worried that three closely related electric AMGs could crowd showrooms and dilute the brand’s edge.

G-Class Blows Its Top

But all dealers need to do to reassure customers AMG is still bad-ass is show them the G-Class Cabriolet, which returns after a three-decade absence, and this time it’s finally heading to the US. The G 63 Cabriolet skips EV power, as it goes for the current G 63’s twin-turbo V8, and swaps in a fabric roof for maximum Insta flex.

G Cabrio production is expected to kick off in 2027, with American buyers firmly in focus. And that’s really the bigger story here. This entire product blitz is aimed squarely at North America, because with China flatlining, the US and Canada are the only hopes for growth for both Mercedes and AMG.

Mercedes-AMG Turns Electric C-Class Up To 11, Power Up To 800 HP

  • AMG tuned electric C-Class prototype shows spoiler and big brakes.
  • New MB.EA platform brings 800V charging and up to 800 horses.
  • Rivals include BMW’s Neue Klasse iM3 and maybe a hot Audi RS4 EV.

Mercedes is cooking up its first fully electric C-Class and AMG clearly isn’t planning to miss out on the performance possibilities. Fresh spy shots show a hotter version of the upcoming C-Class with EQ Technology testing in disguise, and even under camouflage it looks ready to pick a fight.

At first glance the prototype already looks different from the traditional combustion C-Class formula. Instead of the familiar three-box sedan shape, this EV shows off a sleeker fastback profile. It feels a little sportier and a little less buttoned up, if less dynamic than the new BMW i3.

Look closer and the AMG clues start piling up. The test car rides on big forged alloy wheels that barely hide the massive drilled brake rotors behind them. There’s also a subtle but unmistakable party trick at the back. Tucked just under the rear window sits a pop up active spoiler to keep the EV tied down at high speed.

Up front and out back you can also spot Mercedes’ latest star themed lighting signatures. The distinctive star-design daytime running lights are becoming a brand trademark for the next generation of EVs, and together with a huge new illuminated grille they’ll make the production C-Class instantly recognizable as a Benz even at night.

Three Motors, Up To 800 hp

Under the skin the AMG-flavored C-Class EV shares its MB.EA architecture with the recently revealed GLC with EQ Technology. That platform is designed specifically for electric models and supports an 800 volt electrical system for ultra fast charging and improved efficiency. Mercedes has confirmed the stock non-AMG models’ 94 kWh battery will offer a driving range of up to 497 miles (800 km), though the performance derivative will likely sacrifice a few miles.

In return, it’ll generate far more muscle. According to our spy photographer, the system output could reach 789 hp (800 PS / 588 kW) thanks to Mercedes’ new eATS 2.0 motor generation and a tri-motor setup.

New technology, old foes

If those numbers hold true, the electric C-Class AMG might deliver performance that embarrasses plenty of old school V8 sports sedans. Competition will be fierce, though. BMW’s upcoming Neue Klasse-based i3 will spawn its own M performance versions, and expect Audi to cook up some speedy versions of the electric A4, too.

Mercedes is expected to officially unveil the electric C-Class lineup later this year, though we’ll have to wait a few months after that to see the AMG version in full.

Drivers Want More Buttons, So Mercedes-AMG’s New Super Sedan Removes Most Of Them

  • Mercedes shows the cabin of the new AMG 4-Door Coupe.
  • Inside sits a triple-screen layout and three rotary dials.
  • The high-performance EV is set for a full debut this spring.

Mercedes-AMG has pulled the covers off the interior of its upcoming electric super-sedan. The next-generation AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is effectively the production version of last year’s AMG GT XX concept, aimed at the Porsche Taycan and the growing pack of high-performance EVs trying to redefine what a fast four-door should be.

Unlike the symmetrical hyperscreen layouts used across the regular EQ lineup and the latest S-Class, the AMG’s center console is angled toward the driver. A 14-inch infotainment display dominates the layout, leaning just enough in the driver’s direction to remind you this is supposed to be the sporty one. That screen works alongside a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, with an optional 14-inch display available for the passenger.

Mercedes says the operating logic is “balanced,” blending haptic buttons, touchscreen inputs, and voice control. In practice, though, it seems AMG didn’t fully buy into the recent return to physical controls that several rivals have started embracing. The most obvious casualty is the climate system, which remains buried inside the MBUX infotainment menus

AMG-specific touches include illuminated climate vents styled to resemble jet engines, a flat-bottom steering wheel with carbon accents and haptic feedback, optional AMG Performance seats, and a metal-like wing element stretching across the center console.

You also get three chunky rotary controllers on the center tunnel. Apparently, even in the EV age, AMG still believes drivers should have something physical to fiddle with.

Those dials tie directly into the car’s driving dynamics. Response Control adjusts the behavior of the e-motors and accelerator pedal, Agility Control tweaks cornering characteristics, and Traction Control offers nine stages of intervention through the new AMG Race Engineer system. The driver can also jump straight to key functions using two steering wheel buttons that feature their own LCD displays.

Smart Glass Roof Party Trick

One of the more eye-catching tech features is the Sky Control panoramic glass roof, which can switch between transparent and opaque states. At night, it can also project AMG emblems or racing stripes across the glass, matched to the colors of the ambient lighting system.

Up front, practicality gets a small but noticeable boost with illuminated cup holders and dual wireless charging trays. In the back, Mercedes promises “generous legroom, pleasant headroom, and a naturally comfortable knee angle,” all aimed at making longer journeys a bit less taxing. The standard layout is a four-seater, although buyers will also be able to opt for a five-seat configuration.

Coming Soon

The full reveal of the new AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is expected this spring, with deliveries scheduled to begin later in the year. The high-performance EV will also become the first production model to ride on Mercedes-AMG’s dedicated AMG.EA platform, which is being developed specifically for future electric performance cars.

The concept version arrived with some properly serious numbers. It used three axial-flux motors producing a combined 1,341 hp (1,000 kW / 1,360 PS), complete with synthetic V8 sound. The battery pack also featured Formula 1-derived cooling technology and ultra-fast charging capability, allowing it to add 249 miles (400 km) of range in just five minutes

Polestar Boss Says It’s Time To Outrun BMW M And Mercedes-AMG

  • Polestar plans more BST variants across its future EV range.
  • CEO points to stronger focus on track and acceleration gains.
  • BST badge may grow into a full performance sub-brand soon.

Polestar’s designers and engineers may be working overtime to prepare four new EV launches by 2028, but management is already looking beyond the rollout. High-performance variants are on the agenda, suggesting that expansion will not come at the expense of speed.

Michael Lohscheller, Polestar CEO, spoke about the future during a media gathering at the Gothenburg headquarters in Sweden. As reported by Auto Express, he said:

“In terms of how we will continue to deliver performance with our future models, I think we’re going to deliver a more consistent way in terms of performance cars, in terms of the specifications. We want to focus a bit more on performance, because that is where we can do even better going forward, on track, on acceleration, but also in terms of being superior to others.”

Just a few months ago, Polestar was forced to shut down its last UK-based R&D facility as it took a $900 million loan from parent company Geely to survive heavy losses. Despite the closure of the engineering center responsible for the development of the Polestar 5, Lohscheller believes that the brand still has the expertise to take on BMW M, Mercedes-AMG, and Audi RS.

\\\\\\\\

Central to this strategy is the expansion of the “BST” (short for “Beast”) moniker, which will evolve from a limited-production experiment with the Polestar 2 BST Editions into a high-performance sub-brand. Note that Polestar itself used to be the performance sub-brand of Volvo.

While the CEO didn’t get into details, candidates for future BST variants are the next-gen Polestar 2 sedan, the recently updated Polestar 3 SUV, and the Polestar 4 coupe crossover, which will soon gain an estate bodystyle.

As for the Polestar 5 grand tourer, it already packs 872 hp (650 kW / 884 PS) in Performance guise, meaning that an even hotter version could challenge the likes of the Audi RS e-Tron GT, Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, and Xiaomi SU7 Ultra.

Back in 2024, the company revealed the track-focused Polestar Concept BST that was based on the 6 roadster. However, the rollout of this model has been pushed back, with focus being shifted to more profitable models in mainstream segments.

Mercedes Teases A Flood Of New Models Coming Soon

  • Mercedes is planning to introduce dozens of new models.
  • S-Class Maybach arrives in March, AMG GT also due this year.
  • 16 new models coming in 2026, while 14 are slated for 2027.

Mercedes held their capital markets day presentation yesterday and announced plans to stage seven world premieres in the next three months. That’s an impressive number, especially considering the company has already introduced the facelifted S-Class and GLC 53.

The automaker didn’t delve into many specifics, but confirmed the new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class debuts in March. The company added the AMG GT 4-Door arrives later this year, while the SUV variant follows in 2027. That year will also see the unveiling of the G-Class Cabriolet.

While details are light, a slide suggested Mercedes will introduce 16 vehicles this year. Six of them will be fully electric, while the others will have internal combustion engines.

Mercedes Teases A Flood Of New Models Coming Soon

Many of these will be “Top-End” vehicles, which implies we can expect a number of new S-Class variants including the aforementioned Maybach. Some of the others are presumably AMG versions.

As for the Top-End EVs, spy photographers have snapped a facelifted EQS on multiple occasions. It’s expected to feature starry lighting units, a new 800 volt electrical architecture, and an upgraded powertrain. The latter could combine an improved battery with more efficient motors.

Mercedes Teases A Flood Of New Models Coming Soon

2026 will also see the introduction of five Core ICE-powered vehicles and three EVs. One of the latter appears to be the new GLC EQ L for China, which was mentioned in one of the presentations.

On the Entry side of things, there will be a new ICE and EV model. It will join the CLA and GLB, suggesting this could be the redesigned GLA.

Mercedes Teases A Flood Of New Models Coming Soon

2027 will see the introduction of 14 models, three of which will be fully electric. A vast majority of these will become part of the brand’s Core family, while some of the Top-End models could be the facelifted SL.

Mercedes also mentioned a new long-wheelbase GLE for China, which will presumably be based on the facelifted crossover. However, it’s unclear when either model will arrive.

Financials

Mercedes Teases A Flood Of New Models Coming Soon

Fun stuff aside, Mercedes announced adjusted earnings before interest and taxes fell from €13.7 ($16.3) billion in 2024 to €8.2 ($9.7) billion last year. The company blamed the drop on challenges in China, tariffs, and foreign exchange headwinds. On the bright side, the company reduced research and development costs related to future architectures and technologies.

Investors probably won’t like the news, nor will they be thrilled by the proposed dividend of €3.50 ($4.15) per share. That’s significantly less than last year’s payout of €4.30 ($5.10).

There’s Another Mercedes-AMG EV Coming We Haven’t Seen Yet

  • Mercedes-AMG is preparing a third EV alongside SUV and GT EVs.
  • Third model remains under wraps but has been officially confirmed.
  • Simulated shifts and fake ICE sound are expected once again.

Mercedes-AMG isn’t just refining its performance playbook, it’s rewriting it with a two-pronged strategy. On one end, the brand is leaning back into larger displacement engines, bringing more inline-six and V8 models into the fold. At the same time, it’s investing heavily in electrification, with three bespoke EVs slated for release in the coming years.

The first of these will be the all-electric AMG GT four-door, previewed last year by the radical AMG GT XX concept. That model will be followed by a high-powered electric SUV that’s expected to produce more than 1,000 hp. A coupe version of this SUV is already in the pipeline as well, and Mercedes-AMG has said it should break cover by late 2027.

Read: First Look At Mercedes-AMG’s 1,000 HP Electric SUV Flagship

Mercedes-AMG chief executive Michael Schiebe confirmed the news during a recent interview with Autocar. While he didn’t share specific technical details about the coupe SUV, it’s a fair assumption that it will closely mirror the standard SUV beneath the surface, just with a more streamlined roofline.

More Dramatic Looks?

\\\\\\\\\

SHProshots

Interestingly, recent spy shots of the regular all-electric SUV from AMG show that it already has quite a low-slung shape, not too dissimilar to a Lamborghini Urus, rather than a more upright SUV like a Bentley Bentayga.

If AMG makes it even more coupe-like, it could end up looking just as dramatic in profile as the Ferrari Purosangue, not that you’d hear us complaining if that is the case.

It’s not the design of the SUV-coupe that will be the key selling point. As with the standard SUV, as well as the GT four-door, AMG’s third dedicated EV will be based on the bespoke AMG. EA architecture using trip Yasa axial flux motors.

Insane Levels Of Power

There’s Another Mercedes-AMG EV Coming We Haven’t Seen Yet

Both two- and three-motor versions are expected, with the range-topping potentially producing as much as 1,341 hp, or one Megawatt of power. This will allow it to leave more traditional combustion-powered super SUVs for dead, and could make it one of the quickest on the market.

Whether either of the two SUVs or the GT four-door can match the driving enjoyment of AMG’s more traditional V8s remains to be seen. In an effort to make them a little more exciting, AMG will add fake ICE soundtracks to its electric models, as well as simulated shifts like those pioneered by Hyundai’s N division.
