A Thief’s Getaway Waymo Had 29 Cameras Watching, And Police Still Got Nothing

  • Waymo deleted interior footage of the suspect before police contacted them.
  • Police haven’t been able to identify the suspect using their rider account.
  • Six months after the theft, SF authorities continue searching for the suspect.

A Waymo robotaxi can be fooled into rolling straight into a flooded street, but it turns out the same self-driving cars have no trouble pulling getaway duty for a crime. They are, it seems, alarmingly good at helping criminals disappear.

Earlier this year, an unidentified suspect walked into a Hot 8 Yoga studio in San Francisco and left in a hurry with an armful of pricey activewear. He had arrived by Waymo and used the same car to escape, dumping the loot into the trunk of the autonomous I-Pace before riding off.

As reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, local authorities took their time looking into the theft. A search warrant landed on Waymo in April, ordering the company to hand over everything it knew about the account behind the ride, along with video from inside and outside the car to help identify the thief.

However, by the time the search warrant was filed in April, Waymo had already wiped the cabin footage. The company doesn’t publicly say how long it keeps video, and on top of that, its exterior cameras always blur faces for privacy reasons. So despite each robotaxi packing a small arsenal of high-definition cameras, none of them helped track down the thief.

That’s a tough pill to swallow when you consider the hardware involved. According to Waymo’s website, its latest Jaguars feature 29 cameras that provide a full 360-degree view of their surroundings. The user’s account information didn’t lead police to a suspect either, perhaps because whoever booked the ride used stolen credentials or a burner phone.

All For Some Men’s Shorts

The studio manager of Hot 8 Yoga says footage from outside the location shows the Waymo dropping off the individual and waiting for him to return with the stolen loot. Although he only made off with a bunch of men’s shorts, it’s certainly possible this case might encourage other criminals to escape in robotaxis.

Los Angeles saw a version of this last year, when someone bolted from a grocery store theft in a Waymo. That one ended differently. Police caught up with the robotaxi, forced it to the side of the road, and arrested the suspect.

Waymo’s Self-Driving Cars Can’t Stop Diving Into Floods, So It Paused 5 Cities

  • Waymo has suspended robotaxi service across five major US cities this week.
  • The pause follows a recent recall covering nearly 3,800 autonomous vehicles.
  • One Waymo sat stranded in Atlanta floodwaters until a human stepped in.

For a company built on the premise that machines see the road better than humans do, getting repeatedly outsmarted by puddles is not a great look. The Alphabet-owned firm has suspended operations in five U.S. cities while it works out why its robotaxis keep mistaking flooded streets for drivable ones.

The flooded-road problem first surfaced earlier this month, when a Waymo robotaxi drove onto a submerged road in San Antonio, Texas, on April 20 and was swept into a creek. No one was on board, which is the only saving grace. The incident pushed Waymo to recall close to 3,800 robotaxis to fix how they handle these conditions.

The Atlanta Incident

While the company continues working on a fix, another one of its vehicles got stranded in floodwaters after heavy rain in Atlanta, Georgia, earlier this week. 10News reports the EV was stuck for roughly an hour before the floodwaters receded, at which point a human driver was able to jump behind the wheel.

Following the Texas incident, Waymo paused service in San Antonio, and the suspension now extends to Austin, Atlanta, Dallas, and Houston, partly in response to the severe weather sweeping across Texas this week.

Speaking with TechCrunch, Waymo says it uses National Weather Service alerts to prepare its vehicles for difficult weather conditions. However, in the case of the flash flood in Atlanta, it says a storm produced so much rainfall in such a short period that the robotaxi got stuck before any alert was issued.

As part of the recall issued last week, Waymo said it was rolling out operational restrictions in areas with an elevated risk of flooded, higher-speed roads, and added that work on a “final remedy” is still underway.

Jaguar’s 1,000 HP Type 01 Is Chasing Bentley Money And Influencers On Monaco’s Streets

  • A lightly disguised Type 01 prototype is now being tested in public.
  • Key features include the lack of a traditional grille and a radical interior.
  • Jaguar hopes to steal sales away from Bentley and Rolls with this model.

Few places telegraph a target buyer quite like Monte Carlo in race week. That is presumably the calculation behind Jaguar parking a fresh Type 01 prototype in the Principality just before this weekend’s Formula E Monaco E-Prix, giving onlookers another preview of the all-electric flagship before its global reveal in September. The crowd that summers in Monaco is the crowd Jaguar wants.

The development of Jaguar’s new electric sedan has been hugely controversial, and many car enthusiasts still can’t forgive the brand for its infamous 2024 marketing campaign and rebrand. However, if you set the marketing aside, the new EV has the potential to carve out a small but important niche in the industry, targeting those who would normally buy a Bentley or a Rolls-Royce.

\\\\\\\

This camouflaged prototype is finished in red, white, and beige and features the car’s official name, Type 01, on the roof. The skin-tight wrap doesn’t really provide us with any design details that we haven’t already seen, but there’s no denying this thing is a head-turner, and not just because of the color.

The One And Only Jaguar

Just like the Type 00 concept that inspired it, the Jaguar Type 01 will lack a traditional grille and feature slim daytime running lights and LED headlights. Despite being an EV, it features a long hood, which will hopefully accommodate a generous frunk. It also uses pop-out door handles. There’s also no visible rear window, and a small trunk opening.

The brutish exterior aesthetic will continue into the cabin. Recent images have shown that the Type 01 will include a steering wheel with thick horizontal spokes housing a slew of important controls and buttons. It will also include a large wraparound infotainment screen and a digital instrument cluster.

In terms of power, the electric Type 01 is expected to use a 120 kWh battery pack. This battery will drive three electric motors that together produce over 1,000 hp and 959 lb-ft (1,300 Nm) of torque.

Jaguar’s Type Name Is Back, And It’s Wearing Four Doors And Over 1,000 HP

  • Jaguar’s Type 01 rides on the brand’s all-new EV architecture.
  • A 120 kWh battery feeds three electric motors in the flagship.
  • Jaguar plans to reveal the Type 01 publicly this September.

Jaguar’s all-electric sedan finally has a name, and it’s just one digit off the concept unveiled in 2024. Badged the Type 01, the British company says the name “inaugurates a new era,” and the car joins an exclusive list of Jaguar models to use the “Type” nameplate, including the D-Type, E-Type, and more recently, the F-Type.

The Type 01 branding will be subtle, consisting of a motif at the base of the windshield. Jaguar says the “0” refers to the vehicle’s electric powertrain and zero tailpipe emissions, while the “1” signifies its status as the first Jaguar from its new, all-electric era. It’s certainly not the most evocative name, but it rolls off the tongue better than the Type 00 concept.

While the name of this new model is somewhat important, it will have very little impact on whether the electric sedan proves to be a success. While the covers have yet to be lifted on the vehicle’s completed design, spy shots have shown it will look very similar to the concept, although it has gained two extra doors in the transition to production. It will stand out on the road, but the design will be controversial.

Three Motors And Over 1,000 HP

The powertrain will also be crucially important. We know the car will use Jaguar’s new dedicated EV platform, known as the Jaguar Electric Architecture, which includes an electric motor driving the front wheels, and two motors at the rear. All up, the car will deliver over 1,000 hp and around 959 lb-ft (1,300 Nm) of torque.

The EV’s battery pack will be around 120 kWh, although it’s not yet known where it will be sourced from. Jaguar’s last electric model, the I-Pace, won several awards when it was unveiled, but has been recalled numerous times due to faulty battery packs supplied by LG. The I-Pace proved Jaguar could build a desirable EV. The Type 01 has to prove it can build one that stays on the road.

Jaguar’s Most Polarizing Car In A Generation Is Finally Getting A New Name

  • Jaguar will finally reveal the production name for the radical Type 00 EV on May 12.
  • Four-door electric GT is expected to pack more than 1,000 hp and 700 km of range.
  • It marks the first production Jaguar born from the brand’s controversial EV-only reboot.

Jaguar’s reboot is about to get a lot more real. After months of teasers, heated debate, and one of the most polarizing relaunches in recent memory, the British brand is reportedly preparing to reveal the actual production name of the EV currently known as the Jaguar Type 00. The wait has been long, and it’s not over anytime soon, as production hasn’t started, but a lot is riding on this nameplate.

Known internally as the X900, the concept and production mules have been all over the planet. It’s a long, low-slung four-door electric grand tourer that is supposed to reset the bar for what a Jaguar is. Now, according to a report from Autocar India, we’ll find out what Jaguar will call it on May 12. Then, in September, the brand will reveal the production-spec version, and if all goes according to plan, deliveries will start sometime in 2027.

Underneath the long hood and fastback roofline sits Jaguar’s new dedicated EV platform, dubbed JEA, short for Jaguar Electric Architecture. The company says the car will use a tri-motor setup with one motor up front and two at the rear, producing over 1,000 hp (746 kW) and roughly 959 lb-ft (1,300 Nm) of torque in the launch edition. That would immediately make it the most powerful Jaguar road car ever built.

Jaguar is also targeting around 700 km (435 miles) of WLTP range from a battery pack measuring about 120 kWh. The automaker claims the car can recover approximately 321 km (200 miles) of range in just 15 minutes of fast charging.

Despite the outlandish concept styling, spy shots suggest the production car stays remarkably faithful to the original design previewed by the concept. It keeps the exaggerated proportions, long front end, slab-sided surfacing, and sleek roofline, though the production version swaps the concept’s two-door layout for a more practical four-door GT configuration. Jaguar needs a win here. Hopefully, it has an appropriately grand name for this new grand tourer.

Waymo’s Robotaxi Made It To San Jose, His Luggage Made It To San Francisco

  • The tech giant initially said it wouldn’t pay to ship the rider’s luggage back.
  • Waymo offered Di Jin two free rides to pick up his luggage from a depot.
  • As it turns out, there are some advantages to using human-driven taxis.

Taking a trip in one of Waymo’s robotaxis should be a smooth and stress-free experience, particularly since there’s no pressure to have an awkward conversation with a driver. However, for one Waymo user in California, taking a robotaxi to the airport left him without luggage for a business trip.

In late April, Di Jin took his first ride in one of Waymo’s robotaxis, traveling from Sunnyvale to San Jose Mineta Airport. The self-driving Jaguar I-Pace took him to the airport without issues, but when Jin got out of the car and attempted to open the trunk to get his luggage, the button did nothing. Moments later, the vehicle drove off, still carrying his luggage.

Speaking with NBC, Jin said he frantically contacted Waymo customer service but was told the robotaxi couldn’t be turned around and was heading to the depot. He was then forced to board his flight without any of his luggage.

The Californian man was informed later in the day that Waymo had retrieved his luggage at the depot. The only problem is that the depot is in San Francisco, and the company refused to pay shipping costs to get it back to Jin. If Jin didn’t want to pay for shipping, Waymo offered him two free rides to and from the depot to pick up his luggage.

Waymo Finally Steps Up

However, time is money, and Jin didn’t like the idea of wasting two hours getting his luggage. Waymo ultimately relented, confirming that it would pay to deliver his luggage after all.

Waymo notes that riders can open the trunk of one of its vehicles by pressing the physical trunk release button on the outside of the vehicle, or by tapping the ‘open trunk’ button in the Waymo app. For this rider, the trunk release apparently didn’t work, and with no human driver behind the wheel, he had no way of immediately notifying the car that he couldn’t retrieve his luggage. Perhaps human-operated taxis aren’t so bad after all.

Jaguar’s Type 00 Was Wild, The Production GT Could Take A Step Back

  • Jaguar will reveal its new electric GT sedan this September.
  • A 120 kWh battery targets about 435 miles of driving range.
  • Three electric motors are expected to produce over 986 hp.

The Jaguar GT has been teased for what feels like an eternity, but the finish line is finally in sight. Jaguar shocked the world with the release of its wild Type 00 Concept, created to preview its upcoming flagship EV. Recent prototypes of this car have shown it will take key design inspiration from the study, but morph into a slightly more restrained four-door sedan.

With the September reveal drawing closer, a new set of renderings attempt to offer a glimpse at what the production version could look like. That said, the heavily camouflaged prototypes have kept key details well hidden, making it tricky to pin down exactly how far Jaguar will dial things back from the concept.

These new renderings, created by Nikita Chuyko for Kolesa, hint at a softened approach up front. The dramatic lighting signature gives way to more conventional LED headlights, paired with a cleaner, more familiar nose where a traditional grille would typically sit. There is still some flair, including an illuminated Jaguar badge, though the bumper trades concept-car aggression for smoother, more restrained curves.

The softer, more fluid treatment carries along the sides, where clean door skins replace the Type 00’s sharp shoulder line. Like a Porsche Taycan, charging flaps have been added to both front quarter panels, and there are also pop-out door handles. At the rear, a simple full-width LED lightbar stretches across the car, and while these renderings show a conventional rear window, from what we’ve heard, the production model may ultimately do without one.

Another detail worth noting, at least in prototype form, is that the GT appears to wear flared front and rear fenders that are absent from these illustrations, along with edgier detailing than seen here.

We also recently caught our first look at the interior, which places the driver in a cocooned position, framed by a tall center console and low-slung seats. The cabin leans into crisp lines and defined edges, anchored by an all-new steering wheel that looks lifted from a 1970s concept car. The dashboard is pared back, with a curved screen and digital gauge cluster taking over the role of traditional dials.

What Powers The Electric GT?

\\\\\\\\\\\\

Beyond the car’s design, we know it will sport a large 120 kWh battery pack that should give it about 435 miles (700 km) of range on the WLTP cycle. It’ll support ultra-fast charging, too, meaning 200 miles (322 km) of range will be added in as little as 15 minutes.

\\\\\\\

The Jaguar Type 00 Concept

Power comes from three electric motors drawing on that battery. Combined output is expected to be north of 986 hp and 959 lb-ft (1,300 Nm) of torque. None of which is exotic by current EV standards, but the Jaguar should still feel properly rapid, despite tipping the scales at as much as 5,952 lbs (2,700 kg).

Jaguar itself is targeting a 0-62mph (100km/h) time of around three seconds, a 155mph (250 km/h) top speed, and 350kW peak charging. Pricing is expected to start around $160,000, with sales beginning in 2027.
