Genesis Quietly Stops Building Its US-Made EV Amid Struggling Sales

  • Through the first seven months of this year, Genesis built just 1,367 examples in the US.
  • Genesis announced an update to the GV70 range for the 2026 model year in November.
  • The updated SUV includes a larger 84 kWh battery pack, replacing the old 77.4 kWh unit.

Less than two weeks after news broke that Genesis had dropped the Electrified G80 from its US line-up, production of the all-electric GV70 has also been put on hold. The company maintains the pause is only temporary, though the timing raises questions about the SUV’s future. For now, the situation doesn’t reflect particularly well on the brand’s electric strategy.

News of the production pause surfaced earlier this week through Business Korea, which reported that Hyundai Motor’s Alabama plant stopped building the Electrified GV70 back in June. The outlet went further, suggesting the move was not just a pause but the permanent removal of the electric SUV from the assembly line.

Troubled Start For Local Production

Genesis has been building the Electrified GV70 in Alabama since February 2023, and it remains the only EV that it produces in the United States. Sales, however, have been underwhelming. Between January and July this year, just 1,367 units were assembled, a decline of 18.3 percent compared with the same period last year. March was especially weak, with only 93 vehicles completed.

The automaker has confirmed that production of the Electrified GV70 has indeed been halted in Alabama, but it insists it is only a temporary measure and that manufacturing will resume soon.

Official Response

“Genesis has temporarily paused assembly of the Electrified GV70 at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) as we optimize our production plans,” a Genesis spokesperson told Carscoops. “Electrified GV70 production is planned to resume for the US market, with details to be announced at a later date. The Electrified GV70 remains available at US retailers at this time without disruption. Along with the GV60 SUV, Genesis will continue to offer an EV lineup that meets the needs of US consumers.”

While Genesis says the electric SUV isn’t going anywhere, it clearly faces pressure to spark more interest among buyers. Toward the end of November, the model was refreshed for the 2026 model year, gaining a larger 84 kWh battery pack to replace the previous 77.4 kWh unit. The upgrade suggests Genesis isn’t ready to walk away from the electric SUV, even if sales have yet to match expectations.

Genesis Reveals Why Magma Will Deliver A Different Experience Than Hyundai N

  • The Magma models will be more sophisticated and luxurious than Hyundai’s N products.
  • After the GV60 Magma, future hot Genesis models will be developed and tuned in Europe.
  • Like the Ioniq 5 N and Kia EV6 GT, the GV60 Magma will have over 600 hp from twin motors.

A hot new version of the Genesis GV60 is just around the corner, thanks to the company’s new Magma division. While it’ll share a lot of its components with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and Kia EV6 GT, Genesis insists that the spicy EV will have a character all to its own, thanks in part to some trick software.

The new GV60 Magma has been developed in Korea, but moving forward, all other Magma cars will be developed and tuned by the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center near Frankfurt, Germany. Tyrone Johnson is heading up this facility, and given that he played a pivotal role in the creation of the last Ford Focus RS, he’s the perfect man for the job.

While recently speaking with Top Gear, Johnson noted that Magma models developed in Germany will start to hit the market in 2027, including versions based on the GV80 and G80. He also acknowledged that Magma’s electric models will be designed as more sophisticated and luxurious than the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N.

“N is ‘corner rascal,’” he said. “A Magma isn’t about the track, although it will be track capable. It’s a more sophisticated, luxurious driving machine. It has to be about power, and changes to motors and engines are important. But it doesn’t have to be the most powerful [in its class]. It needs sufficient power. Weight is always important. It’s independent of luxury. You have to have weight in focus, partly because range is important and you get diminishing returns with a larger, heavier battery.”

The Software Revolution

Johnson added that throughout most of his 40-year career in the automotive industry, separating one car from another “was all mechanical engineering.” Now he said, “it’s all software,” adding that it is now possible to “fundamentally change a car with software.” Presumably, this means the GV60 Magma, as well as other Magma products, will have different software to vehicles from Hyundai’s N division, giving them unique driving characteristics.

In all likelihood, the GV60 Magma will feature the same dual electric motors and 84 kWh battery pack as the Ioniq 5 N. As such, it should pump out more than 600 hp, and be capable of hitting 62 mph (100 km/h) in the low-3-second range.

Americans Ignored Genesis’ Electric Sedan So Hard It’s Already Dead

  • Genesis has officially dropped the G80 Electrified from its US market lineup.
  • The electric sedan offered 365 hp, 282 miles of range, and an 87.2 kWh battery.
  • Through the first half of 2025, Genesis has sold just 77 examples in the States.

High-end, luxury cars are perhaps more suited to all-electric powertrains than any other vehicle type, as they provide the silent running and solid performance many shoppers are looking for. With this in mind, it was only logical for Genesis to launch an all-electric version of its excellent G80 sedan, but as it turns out, virtually no one in the US has bought it. This has forced the carmaker to rethink its position in its US line-up.

News of the G80 Electrified’s departure from the US market came shortly after it mysteriously disappeared from the brand’s website. After a little more digging, it’s been confirmed that the car has indeed been dropped from the U.S. market, leaving the brand without an electric sedan.

No G80 EV for America

“Genesis is no longer offering the Electrified G80 in North America at this time,” the carmaker confirmed to Carscoops in a statement. “The customer is at the core of every decision we make, and we remain flexible as we adapt to ever-changing consumer needs and market conditions. Our award-winning sedans and EVs remain important parts of the Genesis lineup, and we continue to offer the G70 sport sedan, G80 executive sedan with 2.5T and 3.5T powertrains, G90 flagship sedan, all-electric GV60 SUV, and the U.S.-assembled Electrified GV70 SUV, in addition to our GV70 and GV80 model lines.”

Much like the GV70 Electrified, but unlike the GV60, the G80 Electrified is not based on an all-electric platform. Despite this, Genesis still managed to slot in a sizeable 87.2 kWh battery pack driving a pair of electric motors with 365 hp, to give the G80 Electrified a solid 282 miles (454 km) of driving range.

Sales Simply Didn’t Follow

Genesis didn’t pinpoint a reason for killing off the car, but it’s probably due to its dismal sales. Last year, Genesis sold just 140 electric G80s in the US, and through the first half of 2025, it shifted just 77 units. Additionally, the car is subject to 15 percent import tariffs as it is built exclusively in South Korea and will not be one of the models that Genesis builds at Hyundai’s massive $5.5 billion plant in Georgia.

Genesis’ Flagship SUV Is Hiding A Secret Worthy Of Rolls-Royce

  • The upcoming Genesis GV90 is stripping down and revealing new details.
  • The latest prototype is equipped with Rolls-Royce style coach doors.
  • The electric crossover is expected to ride on a new platform and feature the latest tech.

This month marks the third anniversary of the first GV90 spy photos, but the wait is almost over. That’s clear from the latest batch of pictures, which reveal a modestly camouflaged prototype with coach doors.

Caught undergoing testing in Europe, the brand’s flagship crossover follows in the footsteps of the Neolun concept and features a triangular grille with split lighting units. They’re joined by a sizable lower intake, which is divided into two different sections each sporting a unique diamond mesh pattern.

The profile closely echoes the original concept, but the road-going model sports traditional mirrors and flush-mounted door handles. The latter are placed front to back, just like a Rolls-Royce.

Other notable highlights include a pronounced shoulder line, bright window trim, and a rear-mounted charging port. It’s also worth mentioning the visible part of the third-quarter glass is significantly smaller than the window itself.

Out back, there’s a large liftgate with a rectangular window. They’re accompanied by split taillights and a bumper with a large recess.

While the exterior looks a little dull, the interior aims to be a luxurious oasis. Previous spy photos have shown an elegant second-row with captain’s chairs separated by a large center console. The latter appears to house a wireless smartphone charger as well as an integrated tablet.

We can also expect a minimalist cockpit that eschews a traditional instrument cluster. Instead, there will be a large center-mounted display that mimics Tesla’s setup.

Genesis has been tight-lipped about the crossover, but it’s rumored to ride on the new eM platform. It’s expected to be an evolution of the existing E-GMP architecture, and this means the GV90 should be more advanced than the similar Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9.

The latter features a 110.3 kWh battery pack as well as a dual-motor all-wheel drive system producing up to 422 hp (315 kW / 429 PS) and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of torque. With that powertrain, the model has a range of 311 miles (501 km).

This Genesis EV’s Horned Wing Isn’t Just For Show

  • The GV60 Magma is giving up more secrets ahead of this summer’s official debut.
  • Genesis’ take on the Ioniq 5 N was spotted with a big rear spoiler for the first time.
  • The EV debuts at Goodwood in July, a year on from the Magma concept’s unveiling.

It’s two years since Hyundai revealed its epic Ioniq 5 N and three since Kia gave us the first EV6 GT, but only now is Genesis, the Korean conglomerate’s luxury maker, about ready to show us what kind of performance EV it can whip up using the same basic electric building blocks.

The GV60 Magma – Magma being the Genesis brand’s new performance label – is scheduled to make its global debut at next month’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, a year on from the original concept’s reveal at the same location.

While previous spy shots show the production EV won’t look exactly like the concept, new images confirm one element that has definitely made the cut with only subtle changes. That’s the rear spoiler, which was hidden under disguise or just absent on earlier prototypes. Here it’s still covered in camouflage wrap, but the shape is on on full view, revealing horn-like end planes that are even bigger than the concept’s.

As well as being bigger, those end planes are also more vertical, which could be a result of aerodynamic analysis, or simply because Genesis or its customer clinic participants now think they look better this way. Also present is a rear diffuser mounted below the bumper, and the concept’s roof-mounted fins.

These look similar to the ones on a Porsche 911 GT3 RS, a car whose vertical wheelarch wings seem to have inspired the lower parts of the Magma’s arch extensions (though it’s hard to make out on these pictures).

The Magma will probably use the same 84 kWh battery as the Ioniq 5 N and EV6 GT, though considering their unimpressive 200-mile (320 km) real-world range, it would benefit from something bigger. Following a recent EV6 GT update both of those cars make 641 hp (650 PS / 478 kW), but some reports suggest Genesis will push the needle further to cement its position as the performance leader of the group.

We’re also expecting to see the virtual gear shift function that proved such a hit when the 5 N first appeared.

Genesis Says Its New Hybrids Will Surprise You

  • With a vested interest in motorsport, Genesis plans to become a lot more exciting.
  • A high-performance GV60 will be one of the first Magma-branded models.
  • The G90 will gain new tech, better ride quality, and additional powertrain options.

Luxury might be where Genesis built its name, but lately, it’s been looking beyond plush cabins and elegant sedans. The brand has started flexing its muscles in motorsport and now seems ready to explore more performance-oriented territory through its new Magma sub-brand – think of it as Genesis’s answer to BMW’s M division. Alongside that push comes word of a deeper dive into electrification.

Manfred Harrer, the head of Genesis’s performance development tech unit, recently shared that these new systems are well underway. While Genesis currently offers a limited mix of internal combustion and fully electric models, it has made no secret of its plan to expand its electrified lineup, especially by adding traditional hybrids into the mix.

Hybrids, But Not as You Know Them

We first heard about the brand’s hybrid ambitions last year, but Harrer just confirmed that Genesis is working on both conventional hybrids and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs). He also revealed he’s already had seat time in one of the prototypes.

This is going full steam, but now is not the right moment to reveal the exact date when we can really bring it to the market,” he said of the project. “But I promise you, we are working intensively to bring it sooner rather than later. And this is really advanced technology. It fits perfectly with the brand’s premium luxury approach and is the next step for our electrified propulsion.”

The Case for EREVs

Harrer also spoke about the brand’s planned EREVs. He noted they offer a similar seamless driving experience to an EV, but with more range. Genesis’s first range-extender model is expected to be a special version of the GV70 tailored for North America, though Harrer stopped short of confirming that outright.

Genesis Says Its New Hybrids Will Surprise You

“The beauty of EREVs lies in combining EV driving characteristics – instant high torque and serene cabin space – with a longer range,” he said. “It’s kind of a modern hybrid: You can use it as an EV on a daily basis, but if you have to take a long trip, say, from San Francisco to Las Vegas, and you don’t want to carefully plan your route around EV charging stations, it provides seamless driving with the ICE generating electricity for you. This freedom is generating a lot of excitement around the world.”

“But there’s more to EREVs than range. There’s also the ample power for towing capacity – the energy to tow something like a horse trailer – which remains an unsolved issue with EVs.”

Next-Gen EV Platform in the Works

In addition to new powertrains, Genesis is also working on a next-generation EV platform that promises to boost driving range. This new platform will also support EREV options and include a “new kind of torque vectoring system” that promises to “bring back agility at every speed.”

“We can’t do much about the weight of the underfloor batteries in EVs,” Harrer said. “What we can do, however, is modify weight distribution within the vehicles by optimizing the placement of various components and adjusting the balance of systems. For example, different types of tires could be used at the front and rear to enhance the grip level. Another way would be balancing the drivelines. In the future, you will see more drive-oriented, more powerful e-motors with a rear-wheel bias. This would bring balance by pushing the vehicle from the rear.”

More Powertrains Coming to G90

Harrer also confirmed that the first model to carry the Magma nameplate will be the GV60. As for the flagship G90, he hinted at some notable updates on the way, including a broader range of powertrain options.

“We are currently enhancing the G90 with numerous ideas for new technologies, including digital experiences and improvements to ride quality, ” he said. We’re also looking forward to more powertrain variations, which go in tandem with our broader efforts to optimise our whole propulsion lineup encompassing electrified and hybridized solutions.”
