The latest-generation Jeep Compass doesn’t stray far from the brand’s off-road DNA, and the 4xe trim is the clearest expression of that intent. This all-wheel-drive version is built with actual trail use in mind, not just the look of it, featuring a more functional exterior, chunkier wheels, raised suspension, and an interior that’s been reworked for real-world wear and tear.

While Jeep had already shared a look at the Compass 4xe’s exterior during its global debut last May, this marks the first full reveal of the interior. Among the model-specific upgrades is a revised cloth upholstery treated with polyurethane. Jeep claims it’s twice as resistant as standard fabric and far easier to clean after muddy outings.

Interior Built for Practicality

Additional touches include anti-scratch surfaces on the rear seatbacks, ideal for transporting pets or outdoor gear. The cabin also gets increased storage options and rubberized floor mats designed to handle mud, gravel, and water without fuss.

Visually, the interior leans into a more utilitarian aesthetic, with tan accents on the dashboard, doors, and seats, accompanied by subtle red highlights. Jeep says the earth-toned color palette helps mask dirt better over time. A 10-inch digital instrument cluster and a 16-inch infotainment screen come standard.

Upgraded Exterior for Trail Duty

On the outside, the Compass 4xe features slightly redesigned front and rear bumpers finished in Jeep’s scratch-resistant Bumper Shield coating. It also gains more prominent skid plates, a rear tow hook, a matte black anti-glare hood decal, and a new set of 19-inch wheels wrapped in higher-profile tires.

More importantly, the SUV rides on a suspension that sits 10 mm (0.4 inches) higher than stock, contributing to better off-road angles (27° approach, 31° departure, and 16° breakover).

Built on the STLA Medium platform, the new Compass supports a variety of powertrains, including mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric configurations. Jeep has yet to confirm which specific options will be available in the 4xe trim, though all-wheel drive and an extra off-road mode on the Selec-Terrain system come standard. The plug-in hybrid version produces a combined 195 hp, while the fully electric dual-motor variant bumps that up to 375 hp.

Deliveries in Europe are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025, with production taking place in Italy. The US version remains up in the air, delayed by ongoing tariff disputes. When it does arrive, the Compass 4xe will face competition from models like the Toyota RAV4 Adventure, Honda CR-V Trailsport, and Subaru Forester Wilderness.

  • Several big SUVs have the tiniest rear wipers imaginable and look very strange.

Some things in car design make you stop and ask, “Wait, seriously?” Rear wipers don’t usually make the list, but once you notice one that looks wildly out of proportion, it’s hard to unsee. Take this Honda Prologue, for example. At first glance, everything seems fine, until your eyes land on the rear window and spot what might be one of the smallest rear wipers we’ve seen.

It’s so tiny it barely qualifies as functional. And that got us thinking, what other vehicles are out there sporting hilariously undersized rear wipers?

As it turns out, the Prologue seen in this photo shared by a Redditor is far from the only car that has a wiper so small it can only clean the tiniest section of the rear window. Unsurprisingly, the Chevrolet Blazer EV, which shares its underpinnings with the Honda, appears to be equipped with exactly the same wiper as the Prologue.

The reasoning behind these comically small wipers is relatively straightforward. Both the Prologue and Blazer EV feature tall beltlines and narrow rear windows. Fitting a longer, centrally mounted wiper would mean it would smack into the spoiler hanging over the top of the glass. So instead, manufacturers opt for a short blade mounted low, which can clear only a small portion of the glass without interference.

But Honda and Chevy aren’t the only ones skimping on rear wiper real estate. Look at the rear of a new Jeep Grand Cherokee L, or a Wagoneer, and you’ll find that they, too, have very small rear wipers, despite having relatively large rear windows. It’s a similar story with the Ford Bronco Sport. In all of these cases, the rear wiper looks far too small for the vehicle and is only capable of cleaning a tiny part of the window.

There’s got to be a better way to handle this. And thankfully, some automakers seem to agree. As it turns out, there is. Both the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage have rear wiper blades that actually mount to the top of the rear window and are hidden beneath the rear spoiler. It’s a small change that makes a big difference in execution and aesthetics.

This time around, we get a look at the rear three-quarters of the SUV, along with a profile shot, courtesy of a new video that shows the outgoing Cherokee transforming into the new one.

The rear end carries over the squared-off design theme from the front, with the taillights and license plate area framed by what appears to be piano black trim surrounds and inserts. There’s a hint of Land Rover Discovery in the overall shape, though the taillight assembly with its surround might also evoke the third-generation European-market Honda Accord – an unexpected comparison, but not completely off the mark.

And, in case you were holding your breath for a name change, don’t bother. Despite some rumors suggesting the brand might drop “Cherokee” in favor of a new nameplate as a mark of respect to the Cherokee Nation, the brand is sticking with the original. Looks like that debate is settled.

While the camouflaged prototypes gave us a solid idea, the official press photos reveal that the new Cherokee takes a more traditional Jeep approach, moving away from the swoopier design of its 2023 predecessor. Instead, it embraces a boxier look, with a front end that shares styling cues with the upcoming electric Recon 4xe, all while staying true to what Jeep fans expect.

“The all-new Jeep Cherokee headlines our efforts to deliver more product, innovation, choice and standard content to customers than ever before,” said Bob Broderdorf, Jeep CEO. “Jeep Cherokee will boast competitive pricing that strikes at the core of the largest vehicle segment and sits perfectly between Jeep Compass and Jeep Grand Cherokee to bolster our winning mainstream line up.”

In addition to confirming its name, Jeep revealed that the mid-size SUV will debut with a “new, efficient, and powerful hybrid propulsion option.” That said, we could see traditional internal combustion engines and, eventually, an all-electric variant joining the lineup, as the STLA-Large platform supports all types of powertrains.

Jeep’s lineup has filled out over the past couple of years with the addition of the luxury Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer and all-electric Wagoneer S, which is soon to be joined by the also-electric Recon. But potentially more important than all of them is the 2026 Cherokee, and new spy pics reveal the face and interior for the first time.

Compared with previous prototypes, this one has stripped away much of the front-end disguise, giving us a look at a grille that’s like a mashup of several other Jeep grilles. The five visible vertical grille sections (two are still hidden) are taller than the ones on the Grand Cherokee and seem to stand more proud of the body. But they also don’t have the a piece of trim above them to display the model name like the Wagoneers do.

But even if it did have a bit of trim with the name on, what would it say? We’re calling this SUV the Cherokee because it’s effectively a replacement for the Cherokee that bowed out in 2023, and will nestle below the Grand Cherokee in the Jeep lineup. But some reports say Jeep will move away from the name it’s used for decades as a mark of respect Cherokee Nation.

Whatever it’s called, this new Cherokee’s dashboard design has more in common with the Wagoneer S EV than it does the existing Grand Cherokee. These first ever interior pics of the Ford Bronco Sport rival show a large digital instrument cluster and a central touchscreen that’s mounted at an angle, just above a bank of touch-sensitive buttons for the climate control.

It’s good to see drivers won’t have to dive into the infotainment to change the temperature, and the switches do look great, but physical push-buttons would be even better. Further down the console is what looks like a rotary controller for the transmission and a toggle to move between the driver modes. The passenger side of this prototype is covered with cloth disguise but it’s possible Jeep could offer a third screen above the glovebox, as it does on the Wagoneer S.

Housed between the shock towers of Stellantis STLA Large platform you’ll find the Cherokee’s first ever hybrid powertrain options, and later, an all-electric variant. Leaked documents suggest production is scheduled to begin this fall for the 2026 model year and we’re sure to find out more – including the name – in the months leading up to that debut.

The market is full of small SUVs though not all of them seem equally prepared for the present. Jeep just introduced a new generation of the Compass in Europe, joining the entry-level Avenger and the well-worn Renegade.

Now one of the oldest models still hanging around in the segment in markets outside the US and Canada, where it was discontinued in 2023, hasn’t exactly aged like fine wine. That lingering shelf life prompted independent designer Marco Maltese to imagine what a fresh take might look like.

The current Renegade debuted all the way back in 2014. And while it’s had a few facelifts and tweaks over the years, its styling now looks more like a holdover from a past era than anything contemporary. Jeep has confirmed a new generation is on the way, scheduled for 2027 with a US starting price below $25,000. But Maltese didn’t feel like waiting around, so he rendered his own version, in the form of a more angular, forward-looking design that still leans into the Renegade’s rugged personality.

Bringing The Renegade Up To Speed

The digital concept keeps the original Renegade’s compact footprint but trades its rounded edges for a sharper, more angular design. Its profile is defined by crisp surfacing over pronounced fenders, giving it a futuristic stance that’s further emphasized by a rising window line. The 3D model shown rides on large alloy wheels wrapped in low-profile tires, though an off-road-focused Trailhawk version is also envisioned, equipped with proper all-terrain rubber.

Up front, the classic round headlights are gone. Instead, Maltese opted for semi-circle LED graphics, now a common sight on everything from the Land Rover Defender to a growing list of Chinese SUVs. Jeep’s signature seven-slot grille remains, flanked by hefty plastic bumper cladding that nods to the brand’s off-road lineage.

At the rear, things stay fairly upright. The redesigned tail evolves the Renegade’s original shape with slimmer LED taillights and a beefy skid plate that echoes the front bumper’s rugged look.

Even though this is just a digital concept, Maltese didn’t stop at the exterior. He also drafted an interior with a modern digital cockpit and thoughtful storage compartments throughout the dashboard and center console, borrowing a few clever packaging cues from the smaller Jeep Avenger.

New Underpinnings With An Emphasis On Electrification

When Jeep finally unveils the next Renegade, it won’t just be a new shell on an old frame. The model is expected to ditch the FCA Small Wide 4×4 platform in favor of Stellantis‘ newer architecture. The STLA Small platform looks like a strong candidate, with its flexibility for combustion, mild-hybrid, and full-electric powertrains, all while helping keep production costs in check.

Looking at its mechanically related siblings, the next Renegade could be offered with Stellantis’ turbocharged 1.2-liter engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system. This setup also opens the door to an all-wheel-drive version, thanks to an electrified rear axle, similar to what’s used in the Jeep Avenger 4Xe. In addition, a fully electric powertrain has been officially confirmed, following the path already taken by the Avenger and Compass.

When it arrives in 2027, it’ll face a different landscape depending on where it’s sold. In the US, the Renegade will be one of the few remaining small SUVs in a market increasingly obsessed with size. In Europe, however, it’ll go up against a far more crowded segment filled with contenders like the Dacia Duster, Peugeot 2008, Citroen C3 Aircross, Opel Frontera, VW T-Cross, Hyundai Kona, and plenty of others.

Jeep Shows New Compass In The Real World

The all-new Compass has officially made its European debut, though the initial press images offered only select glimpses of the new SUV in the studio. Thankfully, while renewing its sponsorship deal with Juventus F.C., Jeep pulled back the curtain with some fresh, more revealing shots of the car.

This is the fully electric version of the all-new Compass shown in a striking lime green with a black roof – the same livery used in its original presentation. It adopts a boxier design compared to its predecessor with more muscular fenders, high-tech LEDs, and sharper lines on the front and rear bumpers.

This particular trim rides on 20-inch alloy wheels, which give it a more aggressive stance. The Willy’s Jeep graphic on the hub caps suggests it could be a launch edition with the usual Easter eggs. Another one we spotted is a small Willy’s face mounted on the front bumper intake. Speaking of intakes, they appear to be largely blocked in the electric variant, as is the seven-slot grille.

The new design is combined with fresh underpinnings, as the Compass now rides on the STLA Medium architecture. This is compatible with various powertrain options including mild- and plug-in hybrid, as well as fully electric.

The base model produces 145 hp from a mild-hybrid 1.2-liter four, while the more potent 1.6-liter plug-in hybrid powertrain generates a combined 195 hp. Finally, the electric variants start at 213 hp and go all the way up to 375 hp in flagship AWD form.

Production of the new Compass will start in late 2025 in Italy, followed by its market launch in European markets. As for North America, the availability of the SUV remains uncertain due to the tariffs.

That includes its latest crop of compact SUVs, which use common underpinnings while each clings to its own visual identity in a crowded, hyper-competitive segment.

Among these mechanically-linked cousins, Jeep, Citroen, Opel, and Peugeot each toss their hat into the ring with subtly different flavors, all aiming for the same buyers and the same wallets. On paper, they have more in common than not, but visually there’s enough variation to make a side-by-side design comparison worthwhile.

Thus, we lined them up and now it’s your turn to tell us which one you’d actually want in your driveway. Even if it’s theoretical since most of you won’t get the chance, as Europe is the only region where all of them are currently on sale.

The Compact Contenders

The contenders include the newly revealed Jeep Compass, Citroen C5 Aircross, Opel Grandland, and the Peugeot 3008 and 5008. In the future, they should be joined by the DS No7, which will replace the current DS7. While earlier generations of the European models rode on the PSA-era EMP2 platform, the Jeep is the newcomer to this shared architecture, having recently moved from its old FCA roots to the STLA Medium platform.

As mentioned, none of these SUVs are currently sold in the US. The Compass might eventually cross the Atlantic, but Jeep is still “assessing the situation,” which is just a polite way of saying “we’re waiting to see how messy the trade tariffs get” as the company has paused work at the Canadian plant it was supposed to build the North American version.

Same Platform, Different Personalities

All five SUVs ride on the same platform but feature different bodywork. The Peugeot 3008 and 5008 are the only ones that look like twins from the front, while the others keep their sheet metal to themselves. That gave designers enough freedom to inject some brand DNA, even if the proportions are dictated by the shared architecture.

Front-end design is where the Jeep leans hard into its off-road roots, with a squared-up face, seven-slot grille, and thick plastic cladding. The Citroen goes the other way, aiming for futuristic with split headlights and decorative intakes that do more looking than actually breathing.

Peugeot’s models take the sporty route, wearing slim headlights and sharp LED “claws” that stretch into the grille. Opel’s Grandland plays it conservative, wearing the brand’s “Vizor” face that’s more subtle, though definitely modern.

Side profiles offer more variety. Jeep stays on-brand with boxy fenders and trapezoidal arches, giving it the most “adventure-ready” stance. Peugeot gives the 3008 a coupe-style roofline, making it the swoopier of the bunch, while the 5008 keeps it upright for max cargo space. The Citroen C5 Aircross adds curves and quirky details, staying true to its contrarian reputation, while Opel again plays it safe. The Grandland’s shark-fin D-pillar is its one standout flourish.

Size Matters (Kind Of)

When it comes to dimensions, the Peugeot 5008 is the big boy of this comparison, measuring 4,791 mm (188.6 inches), placing it in Europe’s (mid-size) D-SUV territory with rivals like the Skoda Kodiaq and Toyota RAV4.

Citroen’s C5 Aircross and the Opel Grandland are nearly the same length, at around 4,652 mm (183.1 inches), which positions them squarely in the upper end of the C-SUV segment, roomy enough for families but still city-friendly. Bringing up the rear in length are the Compass and 3008, clocking in at 4,550 mm (179.1 inches) and 4,540 mm (178.7 inches) respectively. They’re compact, but not cramped.

Rear Design and Cabin Differences

From the back, the Citroen arguably stands out the most, thanks to LED taillights that jut out like sci-fi fins. The Peugeot 3008, again, plays the sporty card with a sloping roof and spoiler, and it shares its sharp taillights with the taller, boxier 5008.

Interestingly, the Grandland’s rear design is arguably its strongest angle, as was the case with the previous generation. And Jeep? The latest Compass finally brings something modern to the table, improving significantly on its outdated predecessor.

That brings us to the interior design, where things get surprisingly varied. Each SUV takes a different approach to the digital cockpit, offering its own interpretation of modern tech. The most distinctive setup belongs to Peugeot’s iCockpit, featuring a curved display, a compact steering wheel, and center console details that lean into a light sci-fi aesthetic.

Citroen claims the title for largest screen in any Stellantis vehicle, with a 13-inch portrait touchscreen perched on the dash, flanked by their signature plush “Advanced Comfort” seats. Opel’s cabin is similarly spacious, though the design is more reserved. Jeep adds some flair with metallic trim and unique textures, but keeps the layout simple and user-friendly.

Under the Hood: Shared DNA

All five SUVs share the same foundation, so there’s no need to dig too deep. They’re all built on the STLA Medium architecture and offer a range of powertrains for European buyers, including mild hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and fully electric options.

Entry-level versions come with a mild-hybrid setup built around a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine. The plug-in hybrids step things up with a larger 1.6-liter turbocharged engine, paired with a more powerful electric motor and a bigger battery pack. Fully electric models offer either single- or dual-motor configurations, along with two battery choices depending on range and performance needs.

Jeep Dealers Beg Wagoneer S Buyers With Desperate Price Cuts

The Jeep Wagoneer S fire sale has entered a new phase of desperation as we’ve found multiple dealers offering 2025 models for nearly $25,000 below MSRP. This comes three months after the automaker introduced a cheaper Limited trim as part of its effort to boost sales.

While the 2025 Jeep Wagoneer S Limited starts at $66,995 before a $1,795 destination fee, it appears dealers are waving the white flag. This includes Jimmy Britt Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, which has one of their EVs listed for $43,104 despite carrying an MSRP of $67,590.

That’s a savings of $24,486, which is insane when you consider the 2025 Compass starts at $26,900. However, it’s important to note that price has every discount and incentive applied. This includes $7,665 from the dealer themselves, as well as the $7,500 federal tax credit, and an extra $5,821 off as part of Stellantis’ employee pricing for all program.

Down in Florida, there’s a similar deal at Taverna Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Fiat. Their $67,590 Wagoneer S has been discounted to $43,138. However, they’ve striked out that price, so you could potentially get the crossover for even less.

Chris Nikel Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram Fiat in Oklahoma has one of their Wagoneer S’ listed for $43,425. That’s $24,165 below sticker, meaning you could buy a $17,190 Nissan Versa with the savings and not have to deal with charging on long road trips.

While those are just a few examples, there are multiple other dealers to choose from. Of course, this isn’t too surprising as Jeep only sold 2,595 units during the first quarter. If that trend continues, the automaker is only looking at selling 10,380 for the entire year.

While those numbers sound terrible, Wagoneer S sales weren’t far behind those of the Mustang Mach-E. Ford only sold 2,927 in Q1, which was a 40.2% decline. That’s bad news for both companies, but buyers can likely expect motivated dealers.

Jeep is setting its sights on a bigger, broader market with the next-generation Compass, a compact model that’s poised to become the brand’s most globally available vehicle yet. The redesigned Compass boasts a more rugged, modern look and has grown in nearly every dimension. It now sits on the new Stellantis platform and offers a variety of electrified powertrains, from mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid to fully electric versions.

On the outside, the new Compass adopts a more chiseled appearance. It takes design cues from both its smaller sibling, the Euro-market Avenger, and the larger Wagoneer S, sporting sharp fenders, crisp LED lights, and ultra-slim front intakes. The SUV’s stance is enhanced by boxy wheel arches and generous plastic cladding. Shorter front and rear overhangs give the Compass a more nimble, agile appearance, particularly when compared to its predecessor.

Additionally, the Compass benefits from an improved drag coefficient, thanks to aerodynamic tweaks like active grille shutters.

And because Jeep is all about that “nature-inspired” vibe, the new Compass comes in six colors that sound like they were plucked straight from a travel brochure. We’ve got Hawaii Green, Pacific Blue, Antarctica White, Amazonia Brown, Yosemite Grey, and Volcano Black.

Interior Design

Inside, Jeep has made a noticeable leap in both design and technology. The cockpit features a 10-inch display for the instrument cluster, paired with a large 16-inch infotainment screen. These are neatly arranged above a row of buttons and a rotary knob. The center console and dashboard are accented with aluminum-style finishes, and there’s plenty of storage space for your gear.

Powertrains and Platform

One of the key features of the new Jeep Compass is the STLA Medium architecture, shared with other Stellantis products like the Peugeot 3008/5008, the Opel Grandland, and the Citroen C5 Aircross.

The Compass is now longer, wider, and with a longer wheelbase. It measures 4,550 mm (179.1 inches) in length, 1,928 mm (75.9 inches) in width (+85 mm), and has a 160 mm (+6.2 inches) longer wheelbase at 2,795 mm (110.0 inches). This results in 55 mm (2.2 inches) more legroom, a 34-liter (1.2 cubic feet) front interior storage compartment, and a 45-liter (1.6 cubic feet) increase in boot capacity, now topping out at 550 liters (19.4 cubic feet).

The real news here, though, is the expanded engine range. The Compass will offer a variety of electrified powertrains, including e-Hybrid, e-Hybrid plug-in, and fully electric models. For markets outside Europe, non-electrified gasoline powertrains could still make an appearance, but for now, the emphasis is on electric. Both front- and all-wheel-drive variants will be available.

At launch in Europe, customers will have the choice of a 145-hp 48V Hybrid, a 195-hp Hybrid Plug-in, or three fully electric models. The electric options range from a 213-hp front-wheel drive version up to a beefy 375 hp in the all-wheel-drive version. To achieve that output in the AWD model, Jeep has developed a new, more powerful rear electric motor, specifically designed for the Compass, offering an additional 49 kW of peak power and up to 232 Nm of torque.

Charging and Range

When it comes to charging, the Compass is equipped with a 160 kW DC fast-charging solution, allowing it to go from 20% to 80% in just 30 minutes. It also features an onboard charger that supports up to 22 kW. As for range, the fully electric models can travel up to an impressive 650 km (404 miles) on the WLTP cycle.

In FWD form the new Compass offers a ground clearance of up to 200 mm, with a 20° approach angle, a 15° breakover angle, and a 26° departure angle. Jeep promises it’s more than capable of handling tough terrain, and it also boasts a water fording depth of up to 470 mm. All versions come standard with Selec-Terrain, delivering 360-degree protection similar to the Avenger.

The all-wheel-drive versions are even more capable, thanks to an enhanced design that boosts the approach angle to 27°, the breakover angle to 16°, and the departure angle to 31°. Ground clearance and water fording ability are also improved. Hill descent control comes standard on all-wheel-drive models.

First Edition and Availability

To kick things off, Jeep will offer the First Edition of the Compass, available for order now in Europe. Customers can choose between the 48V e-Hybrid with 145 hp or the fully electric FWD model with 213 hp and a 500 km (310-mile) driving range. Deliveries are expected to begin in Q4 of 2025.

Stellantis has confirmed that production of the new Compass will begin in Italy in late 2025. While North American models were originally slated to roll off the line in Canada starting in 2026, delays related to U.S. tariffs on imported vehicles have reportedly pushed back the launch for that market.
