Stellantis’ Chinese Brand Has A Giant Flagship SUV Coming For The Price Of A RAV4

Leapmotor, the Chinese EV manufacturer partly owned by Stellantis, continues to expand its lineup into new segments. Fresh off the debut of the B05/Lafa 5 hatchback last month, the company is now teasing its new flagship SUV, the D19. Scheduled for an official debut on October 16, the D19 is promising to deliver premium features and cutting-edge tech at an accessible price point.

The official teasers highlight the shape of the full-size SUV and its lighting signature, with slim DRLs up front and a full-width LED bar at the rear. That said, photos of the model have already surfaced on Chinese social media.

Big SUV Energy

In terms of proportions, the D19 lines up with other full-size electrified SUVs from China such as the Li Auto L9, Dongfeng Yipai 008, Chery Fulwin T11, GAC Trumpchi S9, Zeekr 9X, Nio Onvo L90, and Geely Galaxy M9.

One of the most distinctive design elements is the thick chrome trim that wraps around the side windows and obscures the D-pillar, giving it a Rolls-Royce Cullinan meets Mercedes-Maybach GLS vibe.

It also features split headlights, clean body surfacing, and chrome-finished disc wheels that further echo styling cues from Rolls-Royce and Maybach. At around 5.2 meters (204.7 inches) in length, the D19 is roughly the same size as a BMW X7 or a Mercedes GLS.

We haven’t seen the interior yet, but it’s expected to feature an advanced digital cockpit with a dedicated passenger display, along with high-quality materials throughout the cabin. The D19 will reportedly run on dual Qualcomm Snapdragon 8797 chipsets, one handling infotainment, the other powering the ADAS suite. Leaked images also show a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor.

While full technical specifications haven’t been released, the D19 will be offered with both fully electric and range-extender hybrid powertrains. The battery-electric version is expected to offer a CLTC range of over 630 km (392 miles), while the extended-range version should cover more than 1,300 km (808 miles) between charging and refueling stops.

How Much Will It Cost?

Perhaps most noteworthy is the pricing. Leapmotor has suggested a starting price between ¥250,000 and ¥300,000, which converts to around $35,000 to $42,000. And yes, that figure sounds like a bargain for anyone trying to buy a car in the West these days.

In fact, that’s roughly what you’d pay for a hybrid Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V in the States, or, worse still, a mid-level Toyota Yaris Cross if you happen to live in Germany. And that’s not even getting into the more painful pricing realities in other parts of Europe.

Even so, you might be surprised to learn that the D19 won’t be the cheapest in its class. The Geely Galaxy M9 undercuts it with a current starting price of ¥173,800 ($24,400), thanks to discounts.

When it launches later this year, the D19 will sit above the T03, B01, B10, C01, C10, C11, and C16, making it the new range-topper in Leapmotor’s domestic lineup. Spy shots have also hinted at a flagship minivan currently in development, which may share the same platform as the D19.

On September 25, Leapmotor announced that its one millionth vehicle had rolled off the production line. The automaker reaffirmed its commitment to “fully in-house R&D” and its goal of becoming a “respected, world-class smart electric vehicle company.”

Nissan Could Start Building Hybrids For Its Biggest Rivals

  • Nissan is in talks with Ford and Stellantis to build a Rogue-based hybrid.

To say that Nissan had a rough 2024 would be a big understatement, but it’s already hard at work to turn things around. Along with the introduction of new and updated models, it’s looking to partner with other brands, some of which are fierce rivals, like Ford and Stellantis. Before the end of the decade, though, Nissan could be building hybrids for multiple automakers.

Sleeping With The Enemy

According to a new report, the latest Rogue could be the basis for the vehicles in question. Nissan’s compact SUV features the brand’s proptietary e-Power hybrid system that uses a gas engine to power an electric battery and motors. The models that could come from partnerships would be built alongside the Rogue in Smyrna, Tennessee.

Nissan’s e-Power technology has been available in Japan and Europe for years, but it won’t debut in the U.S. until late 2026. It promises 15 percent better fuel economy at highway speeds than in the outgoing Rogue.

That’s a promising figure, and U.S. manufacturing makes it a tempting platform for Ford and Stellantis, according to Autonews. In fact, Nissan might ink some sort of deal with either of these brands even if it doesn’t secure an order for badge-engineered cars.

Nissan spokesman Brian Brockman confirmed that the company is “exploring options” to localize vehicle and powertrain production to meet rising hybrid demand. He added that Nissan “remains open to dialogue” but has “no agreements in place regarding production at our U.S. plants.”

Partners Could Come From All Over The Globe

Interestingly, potential partners don’t stop with two of the Big Three. Mitsubishi is allegedly interested in joint production, too, and would reportedly use e-Power engines for the Outlander. Foxconn could even enter the fold as a contract manufacturer. For Nissan, making two or even three deals of this sort would be a huge step forward.

After initially leading the EV charge with the Leaf, the brand has fallen behind many competitors when it comes to electrified vehicles. As AutoForecast Solutions analyst Sam Fiorani put it, “They can’t get to market soon enough.”

This Stellantis SUV Without An Infotainment Screen Has Everyone Confused

  • A viral Reddit post reveals a new Stellantis SUV without a touchscreen.

While carmakers keep tripping over themselves to pack ever-bigger screens and overcomplicated digital gimmicks into their cabins, a handful of budget models seem content to sit that trend out. One Reddit user in Germany stirred a discussion after noticing that the entry-level version of a Stellantis SUV doesn’t have an infotainment system or touchscreen of any kind and, unsurprisingly, their post went viral.

The model in question is the Opel Frontera, a revived nameplate that shares absolutely nothing with its old-school, ladder-frame predecessor based on the Isuzu MU. Instead, this new generation trades toughness for a modern, urban-friendly setup, sharing its platform with the Citroen C3 Aircross.

According to Opel’s official German configurator, the base Frontera Edition leaves out several features available in the higher GS and Ultimate trims.

Simple Tech For Bigger Savings

Despite its minimalist approach, the most affordable Frontera still includes a 10-inch digital instrument cluster. However, where you’d usually find a touchscreen on the glossy black dashboard, there’s a smartphone holder instead.

The crossover comes with a basic radio, a microphone for voice commands and calls, and two front speakers that only function when a phone is connected via Bluetooth. A USB Type-C port offers quick charging on the move, while the manual air-conditioning system keeps things old-school with rotary dials on the center console.

Buyers who want more can opt for the Tech package, which adds the 10-inch touchscreen, DAB radio, navigation, a rearview camera, wireless charging, and a front armrest with storage. The Comfort package brings heated seats, a heated steering wheel, and automatic climate control, while the Design package adds a white roof, black roof rails, and matching white details for the 16-inch steel wheels.

Pricing The Basics

So how affordable is the entry-level Frontera? In Germany, the Edition trim starts at €24,190 ($28,300) for the Hybrid 110 with the 1.2-liter engine, and climbs to €31,190 ($36,500) for the Electric Extended Range 113 PS model. The optional Tech and Comfort packages add €1,000 ($1,200) each, while the Design pack will set you back another €450 ($525).

Further up the range, the GS trim adds between €3,500 and €3,700 ($4,100) to the entry-level price, while the Ultimate trim costs only €300 ($350) more than the GS.

Interestingly, in France, the Frontera Edition includes an infotainment display as standard, even with a slightly lower base price of €23,845 ($27,900). Other small Opel models like the Corsa and Mokka also include screens across all trims.

Screen-Less Models Are Trending

Of course, Opel isn’t alone in the “screen-less” concept. Several automakers now offer base trims that rely on smartphone docking stations instead of built-in displays. Dacia has led the charge, with all its models, aside from the Bigster, offered in a basic “Essential” specification without a touchscreen.

Within the Stellantis family, the same philosophy applies to the Citroën C3, C3 Aircross, and Fiat Grande Panda, all of which share the Smart Car platform with the Frontera.

A host of upcoming budget urban EVs, like the VW ID.Up (ID.Every1) and the Renault Twingo, are also expected to let drivers use their smartphones for multimedia and navigation. This will allow automakers to offer them at a lower starting price.

Do You Really Need A Screen?

While many buyers love the look of large infotainment systems, some prefer the simplicity of using their own device, which can be easily updated over time. There’s also a practical advantage: without a screen dominating the dashboard, essential controls like heating and ventilation remain physical, straightforward, and easy to use.

Beyond Europe, you’ll find countless screen-less models in Japan, India, Southeast Asia, and South America. In contrast, Chinese buyers have access to massive screens and high-tech features in the vast majority of passenger vehicles.

A new chapter in Fiat’s Panda lineup is beginning to take shape, with fresh variants now undergoing tests on European roads. Among them is a budget-friendly fastback crossover that aims to combine everyday practicality with a more distinctive silhouette, set to be offered with gasoline, mild-hybrid, and fully electric powertrains.

The fastback first appeared in concept form in early 2024, shown alongside a hatchback that evolved into the Grande Panda, plus an SUV, pickup, and camper study. The prototype caught in camouflage testing looks toned down compared to the concept, trading some of its flair for more traditional proportions and a simplified glasshouse.

Up front, the resemblance to the Grande Panda is clear, with boxy LED headlights featuring pixel-style graphics, a closed-off grille, and a single intake low on the bumper. From the side, the longer wheelbase and large-diameter alloys give it a stretched stance. The shape of the windows hints strongly at Citroen design influences, something that makes sense once you look at its family connections.

At the rear, heavy camouflage hides much of the fastback curve, but you can still spot slim taillight elements mounted high and the license plate positioned on the bumper. A discreet exhaust tip tucked beneath the car suggests this particular prototype is running a combustion engine.

An Italian With A French Sibling

Despite its silhouette, the car isn’t related to the the Fiat Fastback that is available in South America since 2022. Instead, it shares DNA with another Stellantis product, the Citroen Basalt, which launched in 2024 for markets including India, Brazil, Argentina, and Indonesia. That model is mechanically linked to the C3 hatchback and C3 Aircross SUV, though it wears a more coupe-like shape.

Fiat’s newcomer will sit on Stellantis’ Smart Car platform, the same underpinnings found in the Grande Panda, the European-market Citroen C3 and C3 Aircross, and the Opel Frontera.

Engine choices are expected to include the 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder in both standard petrol and mild-hybrid configurations, alongside a full EV variant. While the default setup is front-wheel drive, there’s a chance an all-wheel-drive version could follow, echoing the planned Grande Panda 4×4.

Fiat has confirmed that the full Panda family will roll out by 2027, with the fastback likely to be the first of the new additions to reach showrooms. An official unveiling is expected within the next few months.

The electric Dodge Challenger hasn’t had the greatest start to life. After middling reviews, low sales, and many reports of problems, things might be getting even worse. According to industry sources, the 800-volt Banshee halo trim is dead before it ever arrives.

Over the past six months, Stellantis has made a dramatic pivot from its EV goals to a more conventional ICE-focused plan. The HEMI V8 is reigning supreme once again with its reintroduction to the Ram 1500, exclusive use in the Durango, and continuation in the Jeep Wrangler. Heck, even the Gladiator might get one.

Strategy in Flux

That makes a report from MoparInsiders indicating the death of the flagship SRT Banshee all the more believable. Suppliers allegedly claim that Dodge has axed the car entirely. Dodge didn’t confirm or deny the decision when we asked for comment.

“Stellantis continues to reassess its product strategy to align with consumer demand”, a press spokesperson told us. “Our plan ensures we offer customers a range of vehicles with flexible powertrain options that best meet their needs. With the great news announced in July that Stellantis is bringing back its iconic SRT performance division, it follows that we are also reviewing the plan for future SRT vehicles.”

Rules No Longer Binding

Undoubtedly, the brand is clearly willing to make big sweeping changes now that EPA regulations basically don’t matter, and as a result, automakers won’t have to pay for carbon emission credits. The all-electric Ram REV is dead, as is the Jeep Gladiator 4xe plug-in hybrid. What’s one more EV that would’ve cost more than the Charger Daytona already does?

That said, it’s not as if performance at the brand is going by the wayside. The Charger SIXPACK is rolling out and promises a taste of what the Hellcats once offered. The possibility of a V8 Charger feels more plausible than ever, even if it’ll take reworking of the chassis and engine bay. We’ve reached out to Stellantis and will update this piece if we hear anything new.

Stellantis Finds Clever Way To Make EV Batteries Charge Faster And Run Longer

  • New tech embeds inverter and charger directly into the battery pack.

While there’s little doubt that Chinese car manufacturers and battery companies are pushing EV technologies to a new level, that doesn’t mean legacy brands aren’t also looking for how they, too, can make electric vehicles better. Stellantis is one of them and thanks to a partnership with Saft, a subsidiary of energy giant TotalEnergies, it’s unveiled a promising new tech.

This prototype, based on the Peugeot E-3008, has been fitted with a new kind of battery spawned from IBIS, the collaborative initiative launched by Stellantis six years ago. Unlike most EVs, it embeds the inverter and charger functionalities directly into the battery. It supports AC and DC charging while also supplying the vehicle’s 12-volt architecture and auxiliary systems.

Power With Less Weight

The claimed gains are significant. Stellantis reports a 10 percent improvement in energy efficiency compared with a conventional pack of the same size. Peak power rises from 201 hp (150 kW) to 231 hp (172 kW), while the system sheds 88 lbs (40 kg) and frees up 17 liters of space.

Charging performance also benefits, with times reduced by as much as 15 percent. On a standard 7 kW AC charger, for example, a full recharge drops from 7 hours to around 6.

Still On Trial

Although the figures are promising, development is still in its early stages. Testing of the IBIS system is expanding to include on-road trials, and if progress stays on track, Stellantis suggests the system could appear in production vehicles before the decade closes.

As chief engineering and technology officer Ned Curic explains, the thinking is straightforward. “This project reflects our belief that simplification is innovation. By rethinking and simplifying the electric powertrain architecture, we are making it lighter, more efficient, and more cost-effective. These are the kinds of innovations that help us deliver better, more affordable EVs to our customers.”

Did you know that October 1 is International Coffee Day? You probably didn’t, but now Stellantis has made sure you won’t forget. And what better way than with a special version of the Opel Mokka Electric. The name alone fits the theme, since “Mokka” is the German word for mocha, which in turn traces back to the Yemeni port of Mocha, once a vital center of the global coffee trade.

Coffee Bar On Wheels

From the outside, the Mokka looks standard apart from a small coffee emblem at the back. But flip open the tailgate, and you’ll find two coffee machines, one for ground beans, one for pods. The setup also includes a coffee grinder, a milk steamer, a knock box, and even a fridge. All the gear is integrated into custom drawers and cupboards with Opel branding.

Unfortunately, that means there is no space left for luggage. The company even added a coffee icon in the menu of the 10-inch infotainment display.

Opel says that the Mokka Coffee is designed to “make breaks on holiday trips or in the normal stress of everyday life more pleasant and tasteful”. And since this is an EV, having access to all this equipment can keep you occupied during charging stops.

The automaker could have easily fitted the coffee-making equipment to the performance-focused Opel Mokka GSE with 278 hp (207 kW / 282 PS) and a sharper chassis setup. However, since this project is more aimed towards relaxation, they went for the standard Mokka Electric instead with 154 hp (115 kW / 156 PS). As with most of its Stellantis stablemates, the subcompact SUV is fitted with a 54 kWh battery pack, offering a WLTP range of 402 km (250 mile) between charges.

Interestingly, this is not the first time Stellantis has reimagined the cargo area of the Opel Mokka Electric. Back in 2023, the company unveiled an LCV version of the small SUV with two seats and a racking system designed for professionals.

As you might have guessed, the Opel Mokka “Coffee” will remain a one-off. Still, if you are convinced you need something like this in your life, you can always try a similar DIY conversion based on any vehicle with a decent boot.

Stellantis SUV Loses Its Logo To Keep Pedestrians Safe

As cars edge closer to taking over more driving duties, the question of how they interact with the people around them becomes increasingly important. Technology may be ready to let drivers take their hands and eyes off the task, but it also raises a new challenge: how does a car signal its intentions to those outside it? In that spirit, Opel has built a Grandland prototype with a lighting system designed to speak directly to pedestrians.

The test model is equipped with Level 3 driver assistance, which allows the person behind the wheel to disengage under certain conditions. Once the vehicle is in charge, though, a fresh layer of communication is needed to make sure people on the street understand what the car is about to do.

Lights As A Language

The Grandland prototype has been fitted with a new camera system that can detect objects and gestures, combined with an AI-backed “intention prediction” function. This allows it to better recognize real world scenarios like when a pedestrian emerges from parked vehicles or a child steps on the road when chasing a ball.

When operating in Level 3 autonomy (or higher), the SUV’s front and rear indicators shine in cyan. This color was chosen as it is not associated with any other vehicle function. When a pedestrian is detected in the path of the vehicle, it starts braking and the LED headlights change from white to magenta.

Furthermore, a small screen that normally displays Opel’s Blitz emblem shows a warning sign or a pedestrian alongside a halt gesture. When the car has come to standstill, the LEDs turns green and the display shows a walking figure. In more complex situations when the AI algorithm can’t figure out what to do, the driver is prompted to take control of the vehicle.

Rethinking Headlights

Philipp Röckl, Global Lead Lighting at Stellantis, explains the thinking behind the project:

“Headlights clearly play an important part in increasing road safety – but modern lighting systems are capable of so much more. For example, lighting signatures can easily be animated and used for animations. And the illuminated Blitz on the Grandland can be substituted by a display that can both show the illuminated emblem and be used to communicate with other road users and pedestrians. By using existing lighting elements, it makes it easy to add communication features once we will introduce autonomous driving features in our cars”

The Grandland with the unique equipment and lighting features follows a number of prototypes and production vehicles from other brands that examine the same issue.

The model was created in-house in Opel’s Russelsheim headquarters in Germany and was showcased at the International Symposium on Automotive Lighting (ISAL) in Darmstadt. It is the result of a collaboration between the Opel Concept Workshop and students from the TU Darmstadt university.

Stellantis and TU Darmstadt have formed a strategic partnership for joint research into new lighting technologies since 2022. As part of this, the automaker is currently funding three doctoral students at the university’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology.

On her part, Julisa Le, Stellantis’ Lead Innovation Engineer, said:

“We specifically chose colors that are not already associated with other vehicle functions to avoid misunderstandings. For example, red is intuitively understandable, but it is already used for stop lights or the rear lights of cars. Cyan and magenta have been thoroughly evaluated for perception purposes and are currently not present in any traffic situations. Both ensure clear, unambiguous communication with other road users.”

Stellantis Gives China’s Leapmotor A Way To Dodge Europe’s Painful EV Tariffs

A year after making a major investment in Leapmotor, Stellantis is moving from shareholder to industrial partner. In 2023, the group spent €1.5 billion ($1.77 billion) for a 20 percent stake in the Chinese brand and took a 51 percent share in its international division, gaining the rights to sell and distribute its vehicles outside China. That relationship is now stepping up a gear, with Leapmotor set to build cars at one of Stellantis’s factories in Spain.

Stellantis chief executive Antonio Filosa confirmed the development during a recent financial event. While he stopped short of naming the Spanish facility involved, the agreement will allow Leapmotor to sidestep the steep European Union tariffs placed on Chinese-built EVs, which can reach as high as 30.7 percent.

Tariff Workaround

“We have recently announced an industrial partnership to give Leapmotor capacity at one of our Spanish plants to build their cars on their platform,” Filosa said during the event, reports Auto News. “That will start very soon.”

While Stellantis hasn’t said which Leapmotor models will be built in Spain, a recent report indicated that the B10 electric SUV is the most likely candidate. Leapmotor is thought to be investing up to $200 million into one of Stellantis’s Spanish factories to make it happen. Zaragoza has been reported as a potential location for Leapmotor’s local production base, as Stellantis is building a massive battery gigafactory there with CATL, set to open next year.

Leapmotor’s European Plans

Interestingly, Leapmotor has already dipped a toe into European manufacturing. The brand previously assembled the T03 minicar at Stellantis’s plant in Tychy, Poland, though production ended in April. There had also been plans to build the B10 in Poland, but those have since been abandoned.

Leapmotor lifted the veil on the European-spec B10 late last year and recently opened the order books for it. Positioned as a rival to the likes of the Kia EV3, BYD Atto 3, and Honda Kona Electric, the B10 starts at €29,900 ($35,400).

Finding fresh roles for used car batteries is becoming a growing focus in the auto industry, and Stellantis has found a particularly human-centered application. Instead of letting end-of-life EV packs sit idle, the company is repurposing them for mobility solutions outside traditional cars.

One of the most intriguing examples comes through a collaboration with startup Avathor, which has developed a compact EV tailored for wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility. Adding another interesting twist in this story is that the vehicle itself was penned by Italdesign, part of the Volkswagen Group.

This indirect and somewhat unusual collaboration between Stellantis and the VW Group likely stems from the fact that both Avathor and Italdesign are based in Turin. The Italian city is also a key hub for Stellantis, home to the Mirafiori facilities and the company’s main European headquarters.

From Road To Renewal

The process begins with Stellantis brands gathering batteries from retired EVs. These packs make their way to Turin, where SUSTAINera, Stellantis’ circular economy branch, focuses on extending their usefulness and cutting down on waste. A local partner, Intent S.r.l., then disassembles the 15 kWh modules, repackaging them for fresh duties.

For the Avathor One, the modules are reconfigured in 1.4 kWh short-range or 2.8 kWh long-range batteries, offering up to 50 km (31 mph) between charges with a top speed limited to 10 km/h (6 mph).

What Is The Avathor One?

The Avathor One was launched earlier this year as the production model derived from the futuristic 2019 WheeM-i concept by Italdesign. It has a rear ramp for wheelchair access, a pull-out bench, and joystick controls.

Measuring just 1,486 mm (58.5 inches) in length, the EV comes fitted with car-like features such as LED headlights, a rearview camera, and collision-avoidance sensors that recognize both obstacles and pedestrians. It can handle gradients of up to 20 percent and climb steps up to 8 cm (3 inches) high.

According to the company, the goal is to launch the Avathor in Italy later this year, followed by Spain in 2026 and other markets in 2027.

Beyond Mobility Aids

Beyond the Avathor project, Stellantis SUSTAINera is also working with utility providers and battery integrators. One notable example is the ENEL X Pioneer system, which stores renewable energy at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport and is projected to cut CO2 emissions by 16,000 tons over ten years.

Of course, Stellantis isn’t the only automaker that is active in the circular economy with second-life batteries. Other brands such as Nissan, Renault, BMW, Kia, Geely, Jaguar, Toyota, Honda, Skoda, and Audi have all been involved in similar projects.

The automotive industry never stops changing, but 2025 has been unlike most as Donald Trump’s policies have changed the way automakers are doing business. The elimination of federal tax credits for electric vehicles is a major move on its own. Paired with the removal of penalties for missing fuel economy targets under CAFE regulations, the result is a playing field with entirely new rules.

The immediate winners are the combustion-heavy brands that can now focus on selling trucks and SUVs without financial punishment. On the other side, Tesla, Rivian, and other EV specialists stand to lose billions, not because demand for their cars will collapse, but because a critical source of revenue has been pulled out from under them. At the center of the storm is an Environmental Protection Agency that appears to be working against the mission printed on its own website.

Cash Flow Reversal

Since 2022, GM has spent some $3.5 billion buying regulatory credits, says Bloomberg. Ford and Stellantis have spent billions as well. That cash went to brands like Tesla and Rivian, which had plenty of credits to sell since their cars emit zero emissions. With the end of EV tax credits and CAFE fines for breaking regulations, Ford, GM and Stellantis can pour the money they would’ve spent on credits back into their own piggy bank.

Ford CEO Jim Farley said the policy shift has the “potential to unlock a multibillion-dollar opportunity,” noting that the Blue Oval is already retooling its Oakville, Ontario, plant to build Super Duty pickups instead of EVs.

GM is also cutting back on EV production, opting to overhaul factories for gasoline-fueled models. Stellantis, meanwhile, has gone so far as to revive the thirsty Hemi V8 engine, something previously thought dead in the age of electrification. With all of these changes, death might now be coming for some EV brands.

Trouble Ahead For EV Startups

Not only does the end of tax credits make purchasing an EV less palatable for many, but it also means that brands which used to benefit from selling tax credits now need to readjust to the new reality. Smaller brands, though, might be in big trouble. For example, Slate’s trucklet looks almost pointless with a starting price near $30,000 as the EV tax credit was vital to its success.

Even larger brands like Tesla and Rivian have leaned on the pure profit they’ve gained by selling regulatory credits. That money likely won’t be coming back anytime soon and that’s because the EPA seems willing to do just about anything the Trump Administration deems reasonable.

A Mission Ignored

It states plainly that its mission is “to protect human health and the environment.” Love them or hate them, electric vehicles are probably better at that than combustion cars. In fact, the EPA itself has an entire page dedicated to debunking the myths so many like to perpetuate surrounding them.

Things like “EVs are worse for the climate than gas cars,” “EVs are unreliable,” and “EVs will collapse the power grid.” Furthermore, J.D. Power is one of many sources that indicate that when all costs are considered, EVs are cheaper to buy, maintain, and own long-term when compared to combustion cars.

No one argues that people should be forced into one type of car. Choice matters. The government shouldn’t force anyone into a specific car or truck. But supporting policies that improve human health and the environment is what the EPA literally says it’s supposed to do.

By supporting Trump’s rollback of strict fuel economy standards and regulations, the agency is doing the exact opposite of its own mission statement. It’s clearing the way for automakers to build more polluting vehicles, burn more fuel, and erase billions in total consumer savings. Ram Just Killed Their F-150 Lightning And Silverado EV Challenger

In a surprising turn of events, Ram has killed the 1500 REV. The electric truck debuted at the 2023 New York Auto Show and was originally slated to be launched in late 2024.

It was eventually delayed, but the brand was adamant the truck was still coming. Just a few months ago, Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis told us electrification is happening despite the Hemi’s return. The executive also noted the company had the ‘luxury of timing’ and the benefit of being late to the EV game. This enabled them to delay their offering after seeing weak demand for the Chevrolet Silverado EV, Ford F-150 Lightning, and Tesla Cybertruck.

In today’s announcement, Ram hammered home the latter point as they highlighted slowing demand for full-size battery electric trucks in North America. The company said this forced them to reassess their product strategy and decide to “discontinue development of a full-size BEV pickup.”

The move is surprising as work on the truck appears to have been largely completed. As we’ve previously reported, it was originally slated to be offered with 168 and 229 kWh battery packs. These promised to deliver ranges of up to 500 miles (805 km) on a single charge. The truck was also supposed to have a dual-motor all-wheel drive system producing 654 hp (448 kW / 663 PS) and 620 lb-ft (840 Nm) of torque, which would allow for a 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) time of 4.4 seconds.

The REV Isn’t Really Dead, But It’s A Ramcharger Now

Despite the shocking death in the third act, the 1500 REV isn’t really dead. Quite the opposite as Ram has decided to rename the Ramcharger as the REV.

As a result, the ‘new’ 1500 REV will be a range-extended electric vehicle. Its “projected availability” is now 2026 and Ram has, once again, updated the truck’s performance specs.

They’ve lowered the output of the dual-motor all-wheel drive system for a second time and they’re now saying it produces 647 hp (482 kW / 656 PS). That’s down from the original estimate of 663 hp (494 kW / 672 PS), and also a drop from February’s revision of 654 hp (488 kW / 663 PS). The torque rating has also fallen from 615 lb-ft (833 Nm) to 610 lb-ft (826 Nm).

The claimed range of 690 miles (1,110 km) remains as does the updated 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) time of 4.5 seconds. Of course, with multiple revisions, a name change, and the elimination of the electric variant, nothing is written in stone.

Update: Stellantis has clarified that CEO Antonio Filosa’s remarks were focused on Leapmotor’s sales performance in Germany in August and not the entire year. He was specifically referring to the Leapmotor T03, which ranked as the country’s best-selling Chinese electric vehicle that month, while Leapmotor overall claimed the top spot as Germany’s best-selling Chinese battery-electric brand, again for August.

“Antonio Filosa’s statement about Leapmotor’s sales of battery electric vehicle (BEV) in Germany in the month of August 2025 are accurate and confirmed by the national industry’s database (KBA),” the Stellantis spokesperson told us.

“In August 2025, in Germany, Leapmotor was the best-selling Chinese BEV brand and Leapmotor T03 was the best-selling Chinese BEV” he explained. The spokesperson also added,, “All other assessments from the competition cannot be linked to what was stated yesterday by our CEO”.

It seems a brewing rivalry has spilled into the press. Chinese automaker BYD has pushed back against comments attributed to Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa, reportedly made on Thursday in reference to Leapmotor, though the original source of his remarks is still unclear. We’ve reached out to both sides for clarification.

A Question of Interpretation

According to BYD, Filosa was quoted as saying that “in Germany Leapmotor sold more than BYD.” While Stellantis does not own Leapmotor outright, it holds a minority stake and controls exports outside China through Leapmotor International, a joint venture in which Stellantis has a 51 percent share.

The Chinese automaker disputes the claim, citing its own sales data that show it still has a clear lead. Along the way, BYD also couldn’t resist pointing out how its numbers stack up against Stellantis’ own brands.

According to BYD, they sold 8,610 vehicles in Germany between January and August 2025, which is a far cry from the 3,536 sales of Leapmotor over the same period. These numbers can be broken down to 5,852 BEVs and 2,757 PHEVs for BYD, versus 3,088 BEVs and 448 PHEVs for Leapmotor.

We checked the official registration data from Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), which confirm a similar picture. Between January and August 2025, BYD recorded 8,563 new registrations, compared with 3,531 for Leapmotor. In August alone, the gap narrowed, though BYD still came out ahead with 1,114 units versus Leapmotor’s 826.

It is possible the remarks were lost in translation, or that Filosa simply misspoke in Leapmotor’s favor. He may also have been referring to narrower metrics that have not yet surfaced. While overall sales figures for August are available, the detailed breakdown between BEVs and PHEVs has not been published. A clearer picture should emerge once both companies respond to requests for clarification.

BYD Compares Itself to Alfa Romeo and Jeep

While January–August sales alone would have been enough to counter the CEO’s alleged remarks, BYD went further, highlighting its performance against Stellantis-owned Alfa Romeo and Jeep.

The Chinese automaker bragged about outselling Alfa Romeo in Germany so far in 2025, a curious flex given the two brands operate in completely different segments and court completely different buyers. More specifically, the Italian marque reportedly sold 5,226 units, 5,222 according to KBA, including just 140 BEVs (Junior Elettrica) and 34 PHEVs (Tonale PHEV).

In the same vein, BYD said it sold more EVs and PHEVs than Jeep, 350 BEVs and 569 PHEVs, and claims it is closing in on overall volume, only 278 units behind. KBA data indicate that Jeep sold 8,884 units in Germany between January and August 2025, which is 321 more than BYD, a small gap that may reflect different cuts of the data or timing.

A Significantly Wider Range Of Products

A quick look at their local websites proves that BYD has a significantly larger lineup in Germany compared to Leapmotor. BYD currently offers the Dolphin Surf, Dolphin, Atto 2, Atto 3, Sealion 7, Seal, Seal U, and Tang EVs, plus the Seal U DM-i and Seal 6 DM-i PHEVs in the German market.

On the other hand, Leapmotor is currently limited to the T03 urban EV, the B10 electric crossover, and the C10 SUV in electric and range-extender versions. The range will expand soon with the the new B05 electric hatchback that debuted in Munich.

It will be interesting to see whether the marketing war between the two Chinese brands will continue with more statements in the future, and how both of them will evolve in terms of sales in export markets. On the global stage, however, the contest is lopsided: in the first half of 2025 BYD sold 2,145,954 vehicles, nearly ten times Leapmotor’s 221,664.

Stellantis Swaps Maserati For Citroen In Formula E Future

  • Stellantis has announced that Citroen Racing will enter the FIA Formula E Championship.

Stellantis is in the verge of a major shakeup of its motorsport activities, with Citroen Racing taking the place of Maserati MSG in Formula E. The French marque may be most closely associated with rallying success, but it has been tapped as the more suitable contender for the all-electric championship.

Citroen will compete in FIA’s Formula E championship starting from the coming season. Its return to motor racing as a factory team is described as an “electric, innovative and passionate adventure that embodies our values and our vision for the mobility of tomorrow”.

A teaser video on social media gives us a glimpse of the brand’s electric single seater that will be unveiled on October 20. The cover photo on Facebook with the Citroen Racing Formula E Team logo makes us wonder if the new era will mark the end of the brand’s rallying days. A potential exit could coincide with the return of Stellantis stablemate Lancia in rallying, as the new Ypsilon Rally2 HF Integrale could replace the C3 Rally2 that has been around since 2018.

Citroen is known for winning eight Manufacturer’s titles and nine consecutive Driver’s titles in WRC, during the dominant period of Sebastien Loeb and Daniel Elena between 2004 and 2012. It also has four Rally Dakar wins with the ZX Rally Raid back in the ’90s.

Outside rallying, it won three consecutive FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) driver’s and manufacturer’s titles between 2014 and 2016 with a racing version of the C-Elysée sedan.

Replacing Maserati

Citroen Racing will replace Maserati MSG that entered Formula E in 2023, taking the torch from Venturi Racing. The team is fresh out of a collapsed takeover earlier this year, and despite striking a total of three wins (one on every season), has reportedly struggled with financial backing.

Another reason for the demise of Maserati from Formula E is the brand’s new strategy in terms of electrification, with less emphasis on the Folgore-branded EVs and the cancellation of the electric MC20 supercar.

As with Maserati MSG, Citroen Racing will borrow the technical bits from another Stellantis brand that competes in Formula E, DS Automobiles, which has won multiple wins and championship titles over the past decade. DS is currently operated by Penske, but it is not clear whether it will remain on the championship for the upcoming Gen4 single-seater era.

As reported by The Race, Opel could also apply for a Formula E license in the future, something that sounds fitting for its recently renewed GSE performance division.

Citroen Racing will join a grid of 10 Formula E teams for the upcoming season. Rivals include Nissan, Ford, Jaguar TCS, Tag Heuer Porsche, DS Penske, Envision, Lola Yamaha Abt, Mahindra, and Andretti.

A new contender has rolled into the compact EV arena, making its first appearance at the Munich motor show this week. The Stellantis-backed Leapmotor pulled the cover off the B05, a fully electric hatchback positioned to compete with models like the VW ID.3 and MG 4.

In China, the car goes by the name Lafa 5, which is what Leapmotor showed in Munich, but when it goes on sale in Europe it will carry the B05 badge. Production is set to begin next year, and buyers will have the option of an “Ultra” trim that adds a sharper, sport-inspired body kit.

The B05 serves as a low-slung alternative to the B10 crossover that is already available to order in Europe. It is designed for young buyers who are interested in an affordable EV with a stylish exterior and a high-tech interior.

The sleek hatchback body incorporates familiar styling traits from other Leapmotor products. Highlights include the dark-tinted headlights which are connected via a slim grille, the sporty bumper intakes, the frameless doors, and the full-width LED taillights that send subtle Porsche vibes.

The example that is exhibited in Munich is painted in a vibrant yellow shade, combined with glossy black accents and a matching set of 19-inch alloy wheels. Setting aside the name, the European version is identical to the Chinese-spec Lafa 5, although the latter is also fitted with a LiDar sensor on the roof hinting at more sophisticated autonomous driving capabilities.

The company has also shared photos of the Ultra trim that will be formally unveiled later this year ahead of a 2026 market launch. This one is distinguished by a pronounced splitter, a larger rear wing, and a slightly redesigned rear bumper.

The B05 measures 4,430 mm (174.4 inches) long, 1,880 mm (74 inches) in width, and 1,520 mm (59.8 inches) tall, with a wheelbase of 2,735 mm (107.7 inches). For comparison, the B10 crossover is 85 mm (3.4 inches) longer, 5 mm (0.2 inches) wider, and 135 mm (5.3 inches) taller, with an identical wheelbase.

While Leapmotor has yet to announce the full specifications, the B05 is expected to share the LEAP3.5 architecture with the B10. This means it could be powered by a single electric motor producing 215 hp (160 kW / 218 PS) and 240 Nm (177 lb-ft) of torque, and offer the option between 56.2 kWh and 67.1 kWh battery packs. The latter provides a WLTP range of up to 434 km (270 miles) in the B10 crossover, so expect a similar figure for the sleeker hatchback.

The automaker proudly states that the chassis setup of the B10 was developed with the help of Stellantis‘ engineering team and sports a 50:50 weight distribution and a multi-link rear suspension. The same could apply to the electric hatchback. The EV siblings could also share a similar interior layout, with a 14.6 inch infotainment display powered by the Snapdragon 8155 chip and running on the Leap OS 4.0 Plus system.

Stellantis didn’t announce pricing for the Leapmotor B05 hatchback, but it will be more affordable than the B10 crossover that currently starts from €29,900 ($35,000) in certain European markets. This would make it more affordable than the VW ID.3, which is currently priced from €33,330 ($39,100) in Germany.

Stellantis has had a lot going on lately. While the headlines have mostly circled around the return of the Hemi V8, the company hasn’t slowed its march toward electrification. A recently published patent outlines a system designed to manage torque between three electric motors and an additional torque source. That extra source appears to be a gasoline engine, which suggests Stellantis is laying the groundwork for new extended-range EVs.

The patent in question, WO/2025/184156, describes solving a three-dimensional optimization problem to balance torque delivery across each motor and the generator while keeping the battery charged. Essentially, it’s a roadmap for controlling a highly complex EREV platform.

Filed by FCA US LLC (yes, Stellantis is still using FCA officially for its North American operations) and published on September 4, 2025, the document represents the first time we’ve heard about this tri-motor EREV configuration from the automaker. The claim itself is very focused on the technical challenges, coordinating multiple drive units and generator output, but the potential application is what we find exciting.

Where Could It Fit?

What could this powertrain end up in? The folks over at CarBuzz think the next-gen Ram pickup is the most obvious answer. The Ramcharger already uses an EREV setup, and a tri-motor version could make for something capable of rivaling the Tesla Cybertruck but with more range. It could potentially tow more, too. Still, we think there could be a better application.

In China, the Maeextro S800 pairs three electric motors with a 1.5-liter turbo generator for up to 1,333 km (828 miles) of combined range, and the Yangwang U8 uses four individual wheel motors plus a 2.0-liter engine to deliver supercar-level performance and nearly 1,000 km 640 miles) range.

A New Chrysler Flagship?

This could be Chrysler’s opportunity to return with a statement vehicle. The brand currently sells only minivans and hasn’t had a proper flagship since the 300. A new Imperial equipped with a sophisticated tri-motor EREV powertrain could mark a dramatic re-entry into the luxury space, positioning Chrysler with something distinctive in a crowded market.

Positioned directly against Volkswagen’s ID.3, it marks the company’s first step into the competitive hatchback segment.

The shadowy teasers reveal a five-door silhouette with clean proportions and a sporty edge. Up front, the headlights carry Leapmotor’s recognizable LED design language, tying the car visually to the rest of its lineup.

Design Cues with a Twist

The front end with the short hood is slightly reminiscent of the pre-facelifted Kia EV6, the pronounced rear shoulders send Renault Megane vibes, while the full-width LED taillights at the back have a hint of Porsche (if you squint…). We can also see a roof-mounted LiDar sensor that hints at advanced driver assistance tech.

The hatchback is expected to sit on the same LEAP 3.5 architecture as the B10 crossover. That platform currently supports a rear-mounted motor with up to 215 hp (160 kW / 218 PS) and a battery pack offering as much as 67.1 kWh, so the Lafa 5 will likely share similar numbers.

A Record Month for Leapmotor

Leapmotor shared the Lafa 5 teasers on its social media accounts, celebrating a new record month in terms of sales. The brand delivered 57,066 units in August, which is an all-time high and represents an 88% increase compared to the same month last year.

The company’s vice president Cao Li described the Lafa 5 as a car designed for “young people who refuse to settle, conform, or be ordinary.” That ambition will put it directly in competition not only with the VW ID.3 but also with the Cupra Born, Peugeot E-308, Opel Astra Electric, MG 4, BYD Dolphin, and Renault Megane E-Tech.

Facelifted Peugeot 308 Drops The Fangs But Learns New Tricks

The auto industry may be swept up in SUV fever, but hatchbacks and estates still hold plenty of appeal in Europe. That’s why Peugeot has just revealed the facelifted 308, offering fresh styling updates alongside a wider mix of powertrain options.

The current generation first appeared in 2021, debuting a sharper evolution of Peugeot’s design language. Four years later, the mid-cycle update introduces a new face that drops the brand’s signature “fangs.” In their place are split headlights, with LED claws perched above and the main beams tucked into black lacquered sections of the reworked bumper.

A Sharper Exterior

Rather than adding a full-width LED strip, Peugeot designers chose a set of luminous strands above the body-colored grille. The base Allure comes standard with full LEDs, while the GT and GT Premium add Matrix LED tech with sequential indicators. Another highlight is the illuminated emblem which is a first for Peugeot and will likely be applied to all future models.

According to the company, the new bumper intakes contribute to better aerodynamics, guiding the airflow to the wheel arches. The profile is largely carried-over but gains fresh 17-inch or 18-inch alloy wheels, a new Lagoa Blue colour for the hatchback and the Ingaro Blue shade for the estate. The rear end also remains unchanged but the bumper drops the chrome inserts and the taillights now feature the fancier LED claws on all trims (previously limited to the GT).

Interior Updates

Moving inside, the 308 doesn’t get the newer digital cockpit of the mechanically-related 3008 and 5008 SUVs, but it’s own version of the i-Cockpit with the 10-inch display still looks quite modern.

Changes include the new 3D graphics for the digital instrument cluster, and the Alcantara upholstery on the GT and GT Premium trims. Equipment can include a 10-speaker Focal Premium Hi-fi System, an eight-color ambient lighting, and massaging seats, while the infotainment benefits from over-the-air upgrades.

Peugeot claims they use 31% recycled and renewable materials for the construction of the facelifted 308, weighing 405 kg (893 pounds) per vehicle.

Wagon Practicality

Luckily for fans of station wagons, the Peugeot 308 SW has survived the facelift, with a longer body and the extra practicality of a large boot. The model can carry between 598-1,487 litres (21.1-52.5 cubic feet) of luggage depending on the seating configuration. It also features a 40:20:40 split on the rear bench, and a power tailgate.

The Peugeot 308 rides on the EMP2 platform which is shared with the Opel Astra and Astra Sports Tourer, and the recently facelifted DS N°4. Chances are that the next generation will move to the evolved STLA Medium architecture which is already used in a number of Stellantis compact SUVs.

Diesel, Mild-Hybrid, PHEV, And Fully Electric Options

While the auto industry is moving away from diesels, Stellantis has decided to keep offering the Peugeot 308 with the 1.5-liter BlueHDi four-cylinder turbodiesel. The only non-electrified engine in the lineup produces 129 hp (96 kW / 130 PS) and is exclusively mated to an eight-speed automatic.

The model is also available with a mild-hybrid turbo 1.2-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine which is good for 143 hp (107 kW / 145 PS). This is made to a six-speed dual-clutch automatic (e-DSC6) with an integrated electric motor. Peugeot claims that the MHEV can drive up to 50% of the time in EV mode in urban environments.

Moving further up the electrification ladder, the 308 Plug-in Hybrid combines a single electric motor with a turbo 1.6-liter engine producing a combined 192 hp (143 kW / 195 PS). The setup includes a seven-speed e-DCS7 dual clutch automatic and a 17.2 kWh battery pack, allowing a zero-emission range of 53 miles (85 km).

Finally, the fully electric E-308 has a front-mounted electric motor producing 154 hp (115 kW / 156 PS), sourcing energy from a 58.4 kWh battery pack. The WLTP range is 281 miles (452 km), representing an increase of 23 miles (37 km) compared to the pre-facelifted version, achieved thanks to improvements in battery and powertrain efficiency. When connected to an 100 kW DC charger, the EV can charge from 20-80% in 32 minutes. Furthermore, it is compatible with V2L function using an optional adapter.

The company didn’t mention anything about a potential performance-focused version that could signal the return of the GTI badge in a compact hot hatch. Note that Peugeot has recently introduced the fully electric E-208 GTI, after announcing that the PSE (Peugeot Sport Engineered) badge won’t live past the existing 508.

Availability And Rivals

The facelifted lineup of the Peugeot 308 will be available in Europe and the UK starting this autumn. Prices are expected to be announced at a later date. The model will still be manufactured at the Mulhouse plant in France.

Rivals of the Peugeot 308 include the likes of the VW Golf, Opel Astra, Toyota Corolla, and Honda Civic, as the Ford Focus has been discontinued. More premium offerings in the compact hatchback segment include the DS N°4, Audi A3, BMW 1-Series, and Mercedes A-Class.
