Ferrari has dropped the first details about its maiden EV, next year’s Elettrica crossover, and some people might be wondering if, by doing so, it’s dropped the ball as well. Because while its peak output will be over 986 hp (1,000 PS / 735 kW), Ferrari has confirmed it will not make as much power as the new breed of rapid Chinese electric cars.
“You can see on the market some electric cars that already have 2,000 horsepower,” Ferrari product boss Gianmaria Fulgenzi told media.
“It’s very easy and simple to create that power with an electric engine. So you can see in the market a lot of companies that have never done cars, and now they’re able to produce a car with 1,000 horsepower.”
Fulgenzi didn’t mention smartphone firm turned automaker Xiaomi by name, or its 1,526 hp (1,547 PS / 1,138 kW) Xiaomi SU7 Ultra. But it’s the car that most obviously springs to mind, and we know that Ferrari recently had its hands on an SU7 at its Maranello HQ.
He could also have been thinking of the BYD’s 2,977 (3,018 PS / 2,220 kW) YangWang U9 Xtreme, which this month recorded 308 mph (491 km/h) at VW’s Ehra-Lessien test track, beating the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+’s record.
“But what is the joke? What do you feel when you drive this kind of car?” he asked journalists, per Auto Express. “They are elephants because you need very big engines and a very big battery.”
Let’s leave aside the elephant in Fulgenzi’s room – the Elettrica’s huge 122 kWh battery dwarfs the ones in the SU7 and U9 – and look at the other figures.
A combination of a 282 hp (210 kW / 286 PS) front axle from the F80 supercar and 831 hp (620 kW / 843 PS) from the rear motors will give “more than” 986 hp, Ferrari says, enough for a 2.5-second zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) time and electronically limited 193 mph (310 km/h) top speed. Those are still impressive numbers in absolute terms, but won’t set the Elettrica apart from the crowd.
It’s kind of funny to hear a company like Ferrari, which for years pushed power outputs, acceleration and top speeds to new highs, talking about how pointless the fastest modern cars are. But Fulgenzi is right: we (and automakers) seem to have crossed a line here in terms of power and performance and don’t know how to stop.
Why? Because horsepower, top speed, and 0-60 times are the metrics by which we’ve judged performance cars for decades. Remove them and we’re kind of lost, unless we actually get a chance to jump behind the wheel and experience them ourselves.
It’d be difficult to explain to a potential customer why they should buy your car if it made less power and was slower than the one they already have (though Detroit had to do that during the emissions-strangled 1970s), so automakers keep pushing. And for years, that was fine.
When you traded in your naturally aspirated E46 330i that required 6.5 seconds to get to 60 mph for a turbocharged E90/92 335i that did the job in 5.5 seconds, you could feel the difference, and that could be fun.
But when even fairly ordinary electric cars like the $54,990 Tesla Model 3 Performance can get to 60 in 2.9 seconds, you have to wonder how much longer automakers can keep pushing in this direction. Beyond bragging rights, there’s little extra benefit in having a car that accelerates more quickly than that.
And definitely none to insurance companies, because an uptick in accident rates is surely inevitable if we keep going. Rarely mentioned today is that crippling insurance premiums had as much to do with the death of the original American muscle car in the early 1970s as tightening emissions regulations.
Anyone who lifts weights for recreation might recognise a parallel in all of this to men’s bodybuilding. From the mid 1990s, partly off the back of the use of new drugs like insulin and growth hormone, the guys competing in the top tier literally exploded in size, shifting the focus from aesthetics to freak-show levels of mass.
It was, and still is, fascinating to see what the body can achieve when pushed to the limit, in the same way that it’s impressive that a BYD can do 308 mph. But more recently we’ve seen a huge boom in the popularity of the Classic Physique division, whose shapes hark back to the “golden era” of bodybuilding, when men like Arnold Schwarzenegger still looked super, but also human.
Stepping Back From The Speed Wars

Is Ferrari (of all people) leading a similar shift in the car world with its Elettrica (seen above, testing)? If it is, it wouldn’t be the first time it’s turned its back on the battle to have the biggest numbers.
Although the F40’s 202 mph (325 kmh) top speed broke new ground, for the past 25 years Ferrari has capped its fastest cars at 217 mph (350 kmh) and was content to let Bugatti build cars that ate up a drag strip in less time. That decision in no way diminished Ferrari’s credibility in the eyes of enthusiasts.
But letting other brands make everyday crossovers that are more powerful, accelerate more quickly, and cost less, while also still not publishing any other metrics like a Nurburgring lap time to show us how the sum of the car, including its chassis and brakes, is more important than the schoolyard stats? Now that’s a bold move.
And it’s one that’ll really test Ferrari’s brand strength, particularly among younger buyers who are less familiar with Maranello’s history – one built in large part on cars that were the fastest and most powerful of their time.

EV fires, notoriously difficult to extinguish once they start, remain one of the toughest challenges for carmakers. Engineers continue racing to design battery packs resilient enough to survive crashes without igniting. In China, however, a very different approach has been showcased: a high-speed ejection system that literally launches the pack away like a projectile from the vehicle during an emergency.
If that sounds less like a safety breakthrough and more like and accident waiting to happen, you’re getting the idea. And yes, it really is that stupid.
Battery Launcher
The unusual demonstration was captured in a video that went viral on Chinese social media. The clip shows a large battery module violently shooting out of the side of an SUV before smoke appears. Safety workers quickly smothered the pack with a special blanket after it landed in a designated area with pillows.
According to Chinese reports, the system works in much the same way as an airbag. If sensors detect a thermal event in the pack, the system can trigger an ejection in less than a second, flinging the battery between 3–6 meters (10–20 feet) away from the vehicle. The idea is to protect occupants from a potential fire or even an explosion.
Good Luck Everyone Else
Of course, as many commenters pointed out, “somewhere else” could just mean straight into another moving car, onto pedestrians, or across live traffic. A battery pack that weighs hundreds of kilos is about as far from harmless as a projectile can get. And in the kind of heavy crash where fires are most likely, the car’s structure could crumple enough to jam the system anyway, leaving you with both the fire and the deadweight still on board.
Who Staged the Demo?
Here’s where it gets interesting. While we couldn’t find official information, markers on the SUV suggest the test was organized by the China Automotive Collision Repair & Technology Research Center. Stage graphics show it took place during the “Power Battery Launch Technology Demonstration and Exchange Meeting” on September 19, 2025.
The prototype appears to be based on the iCar 03T, though the automaker quickly distanced itself from the experiment. Posting on its Chinese social media accounts, the Chery-owned brand stated: “This has nothing to do with iCAR, please be rational.” Reports also claimed that Joyson Group may have collaborated on the project, but the company has since denied involvement, according to Epoch Times.
For all the spectacle, the so-called missile-style ejection system is a dead end. Lobbing a half-ton battery into traffic is not a safety feature, it’s a liability with wings. And in the real-world crashes where it might matter, the mechanism itself would likely be wrecked before it ever fired.
Vacuum maker Dreame has revealed renderings of its first ever EV.
The car looks like a Bugatti Chiron with an extra meter of wheelbase.

A Chinese company whose business involves making things that literally suck has teased its first car, which definitely doesn’t. But we see legal trouble brewing because vacuum maker Dreame’s maiden EV is a dead ringer for a Bugatti Chiron, only reimagined with four doors.
The exterior renders, which seem to have been created entirely or at least partially with AI (telltale signs include the grille pattern) were shared on social media by Dream Technology founder Yu Hao. They show a swoopy four-door coupe that could easily pass for a stretched Bugatti Chiron variant that never made production.
CES Debut?
Chinese media reports the new automotive division of the company plans to display a physical prototype of the car at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas next January.
Though not an exact clone, the design is similar enough to make you do a double take. The headlights are different but the other core Chiron design elements like the horseshoe grille, central spine and C-shaped rear quarter motif are shamelessly carried across.
The interior at least looks more original, and doesn’t feature the vertical bank of dials fitted to the Chiron, whose steering wheel was milled from a single chunk of aluminium billet, but which didn’t feature any kind of touchscreen. That of course would be absurd for a Chinese car in 2027, so Dream Technology’s Chiron-a-like has a large widescreen tablet mounted above the console, plus a secondary display on the console itself.
Last month Dreame, which was founded in 2017 and styles itself as China’s answer to Apple, confirmed plans to enter the automotive space in 2027 with an electric hypercar capable of outrunning machines from Bugatti and Koenigsegg.
The company is currently scouting potential production locations for a new plant to build the EV in Berlin, Germany, which include a site next door to Tesla’s Gigafactory, Car News China reports. Yu Hao previously posted images of the Tesla plant, along with text that said “factories in Europe are being selected for several businesses.” And Chinese media outlet Jieman claims Dreame is getting cosy with French bank BNP Paribas to bring its automotive plans to fruition.
While the Chiron was equipped with a quad-turbo W16 making 1,479 hp (1,500 PS / 1,103 kW) in stock form and its Tourbillon successor has a naturally-aspirated hybrid V12 that cranks out 1,775 hp (1,800 PS / 1,324 kW), Dreame’s car will be a pure EV.

Phoenix Motor Inc., known for building heavy-duty transit buses and helping electrify medium-duty vehicles, announced John Walsh is stepping in as the new president of Phoenix Motor and CEO of PhoenixEV, the company’s U.S.-based commercial electric vehicle brand.
Walsh will oversee the company’s American operations, focusing on scaling production, accelerating adoption of zero-emission solutions and expanding market share in the commercial and transit EV space. While it’s unclear why Denton Peng is stepping down as President of Phoenix Motor, he will continue to serve as the chief executive officer of Phoenix Motor Inc. leading the company’s global strategy, innovation initiatives, and international operations.

Prior to that, he served as chief commercial officer at Proterra, overseeing record-setting electric transit bus sales and managing its transit, powered and energy business units. He also held key leadership positions as president and COO of Davey Coach, president of REV Bus Group, which included nine business units such as ENC and Collins Bus Corporation and CEO of MV-1/VPG, a specialty OEM for the paratransit market.
Walsh brings not only deep operational expertise, but also a strong track record in business development, negotiation and strategic planning, honed through decades of executive experience in the automotive and commercial transportation sectors. A graduate of Methodist University in North Carolina, he holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
