Acura Shifts Strategy After Realizing EVs Alone Just Won’t Cut It

  • Acura is pivoting away from an EV-only future due to weak customer demand.
  • Executives confirm hybrids are now a serious part of the brand’s evolving strategy.
  • Future hybrids could include updates to existing Acuras and all-new nameplates.

Although electric vehicle sales continue to grow, they haven’t surged quite like some industry experts and automakers had expected. As such, a growing number of brands are turning their attention to hybrids, viewing them as an important stopgap between traditional ICEs and EVs. Acura is the latest carmaker to follow this trend.

While parent company Honda has several hybrid models in its family, Acura has long remained committed to ICEs and EVs, largely disregarding hybrid powertrains. Now, American Honda chief executive Kazuhiro Takizawa has acknowledged that due to “customer demand, it’s not realistic” to only focus on EVs moving forward.

Read: Honda’s Future Is Packed With New Models And It Isn’t All Electric

“We will max production of ICE and hybrid models to meet the needs of our customers in North America,” he told The Drive while speaking at Monterey Car Week. “This means extending key ICE models and adding hybrid products. Our strategy to invest in flexible production in our EV hub in Ohio is proving very smart. This will enable us to make ICE, hybrid, and EV models on the same production lines, and adjust production fluidly based on customer demands.”

Importantly, shoppers shouldn’t expect to see hybrids from Acura for quite some time. When asked why Acura doesn’t simply borrow the hybrid powertrain of the Civic for a car like the Integra, Takizawa-san noted it usually takes several years to overhaul a vehicle to this extent.

More Than An Engine Swap

“When you change the powertrain, with crash tests and all those things we have to start from scratch,” he said. “[Our engineers] say it’s quite difficult. But of course, it’s not impossible, and we have that technology, so it’s just a matter of lead time and development of the models. To have a new vehicle, we usually need four years or more. [With] this lead time, we need to wait. Once we made our decision, it still takes several years. So it’s just a matter of time.”

During a separate interview with Auto News, Acura senior managing director and chief officer of automotive operations at Honda Motor Co, Katsushi Inoue, said the hybrids have “always been an option, but now we are taking this option very seriously.”

He did not specify which Acura models could get hybrid power, but he indicated the automaker is looking at adding hybrids to existing models, as well as exploring potential all-new hybrid models.

America’s Most Satisfying Car Brands To Own Revealed And Some Big Names Took A Hard Fall

  • A new study has found Subaru and Lexus are the most satisfying mainstream and luxury brands.
  • Chrysler and Ram were the worst mainstream brands, while BMW bombed in the luxury department.
  • Customers of both mainstream and luxury vehicles were less satisfied with their car’s technology.

According to the latest American Customer Satisfaction Index Automobile Study, Americans are becoming less satisfied with their vehicles. The overall satisfaction index dropped one point this year to 79.

Mainstream brands held steady at 79, while luxury brands slipped a point as they fell to 80. The biggest drop came from smaller brands, which are grouped into an “others” category, as they plunged 9% to 74.

Jumping into specifics, Subaru was deemed the most satisfying brand with a score of 85. It was followed by Mazda and Toyota in second with 82, while Buick, GMC, and Honda tied for third at 81.

Stellantis had a dismal showing as Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram all fell. In fact, all four brands found themselves at the bottom of the list with Chrysler and Ram tied for dead last at 69.

Interestingly, satisfaction with most vehicle related components and experiences was largely unchanged. However, there were drops related to technology and safety. The latest study also introduced two new categories – expected future resale or trade-in value and driving distance on a full charge or full tank of gas – and consumers weren’t exactly thrilled with either, especially for EVs.

On the luxury side of the equation, Lexus was top dog with a score of 87. They were followed by Mercedes (82) as well as Cadillac and Tesla, which tied for third at 81. BMW finished last with a score of 75 and they dropped four points from 2024.

Luxury buyers were less satisfied with a number of things including driving performance, exteriors, interiors, and technology. There were also drops in safety and dependability.

Aside from the mainstream versus luxury divide, people were less satisfied with hybrids and EVs. Hybrids fell two points to 80, while electric vehicles dropped four points to fall to 73. This stands in contrast to gas-powered models, which held steady with a satisfaction index of 80.

The American Customer Satisfaction Index noted that with 22% of borrowers opting for 84-month loans, there will likely be an increased emphasis on reliability and dependability as consumers are holding onto their vehicles for longer. Ram spotted this shift awhile ago and they recently launched a new 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty.

Dongfeng Suddenly Walks Away From Decades-Long Honda Engine Venture

  • Dongfeng is selling its 50 percent stake in a long-running engine joint venture.
  • The partnership with Honda has operated since 1998 and built combustion engines.
  • The joint venture factory employs 827 workers and carries 3.3 billion yuan in debt.

Since the late 1990s, Honda has worked side by side with Dongfeng in China, producing hundreds of thousands of internal combustion engines through a long-standing joint venture.

That partnership may soon look very different, as Dongfeng has decided to sell its 50 percent stake, a move that reflects the sharp decline of traditional engine sales in China and a growing push toward electric vehicles.

Read: Honda S7 Is A $36,000 Electric SUV That’s Not For US

Dongfeng officially listed its stake on the Guangdong United Assets and Equity Exchange earlier this week. While no reserve price has been set, the listing carries a deadline of September 12.

Details in the filing show the joint venture held assets worth 5.4 billion yuan ($752 million) last year, along with debts totaling 3.3 billion yuan ($459 million). The factory tied to the venture employs 827 workers.

Pressure on Legacy Partnerships

Japanese carmakers like Honda have been feeling the squeeze from homegrown Chinese brands, many of which have surged ahead in producing innovative and competitive EVs. Dongfeng has faced a similar struggle, lagging behind rapidly expanding rivals such as BYD.

The company’s annual sales tell the story clearly, falling from 3.8 million vehicles in 2016 to just 1.5 million last year across both its own brand and joint ventures with Honda and Nissan.

Dongfeng Suddenly Walks Away From Decades-Long Honda Engine Venture

It’s unclear what the next step for Dongfeng Honda will be. Honda may opt to buy out Dongfeng and bring its Chinese engine operation completely in-house, or it may hope for another local brand to step in for a new joint venture. For now, Honda’s automobile production joint venture partnership with Dongfeng remains intact.

Earlier this year, Honda introduced a new EV designed specifically for the Chinese market in collaboration with Dongfeng. At the same time, it also launched the GAC Honda GT through its other joint venture with GAC Group, showing that while the old engine-focused model may be fading, the EV era is already shaping the company’s next chapter in China.

Mugen Turns Honda’s Tiny EV Into A Pocket-Sized Street Fighter

  • Mugen gives the Honda N-One e an aggressive bodykit and other accessories.
  • Aero parts are complemented by performance dampers and new alloy wheels.
  • All of the Mugen accessories will be available in Japan starting this autumn.

A new spark is coming to city streets, and it’s wearing a feisty grin. The Honda N-One e:, a fully electric kei car set to launch in Japan and Europe, already has a distinctive, slightly mischievous look. Now Mugen has stepped in with a fresh body kit and a collection of accessories to give it even more personality.

The exterior upgrades include a front splitter, side skirts, and a compact rear diffuser, all finished in matte black. A matching spoiler and 15-inch alloy wheels complete the package, giving the petite EV the stance of a scaled-down hot hatch.

Mugen hasn’t stopped at just aerodynamics. Special decals featuring the Mugen name can be applied to the front bumper, grille, side panels, and rear bumper. An additional badge on the front fenders makes sure the car’s tuning pedigree is unmistakable.

Inside, the Mugen touch continues with branded scuff plates and door cubbies. The accessory list extends to tailored floor mats and a matching cover for the boot floor. Practical touches include window visors and hydrophilic mirror coatings designed to improve wet-weather visibility.

Subtle Performance Tweaks

Mugen’s version of the Honda N-One e: retains the stock electric motor, delivering 63 hp (64 PS / 47 kW) in line with kei car regulations. Performance dampers, paired with the larger alloy wheels, promise more responsive handling.

The only limitation for spirited drives on Japan’s winding roads is the range, estimated at over 245 km (145 miles) between charges.

New Acura RSX Shows Its Face Ahead Of Debut

  • Acura’s RSX returns as an all-electric SUV, built on Honda’s in-house EV platform.
  • The RSX will be the first model manufactured at Honda’s upgraded Ohio EV Hub.
  • Sales of the all-electric model are expected to officially begin in early 2026.

Update: Nearly eight months after Acura first previewed the reborn RSX, a nameplate returning in a form few expected, the company has released a second teaser, this time revealing the front of the pre-production model. The new RSX is an electric coupe-crossover, and its face adopts a clean, aggressive design. There’s a subtle nod to Acura’s classic “beak” in the sculpted lines, but no traditional grille. Instead, slim headlamps anchor a minimalist front end.

Alongside the teaser image, Acura also confirmed that the RSX Prototype will make its global debut during Monterey Car Week in California, running from August 8 to 17. Original story continues below.

New Acura RSX Shows Its Face Ahead Of Debut

Hot on the heels of the company’s retro-name revival that has already included the likes of the Integra and the Honda Prelude, Acura has announced the comeback of the RSX. The catch? Well, it’s nothing like the RSX you might remember from your early 2000s daydreams.

This time around, the new RSX adopts an SUV body and will be Acura’s first model to ride on an all-new dedicated EV platform. Unlike the Acura ZDX, which borrows its underpinnings from General Motors, the RSX will ride on Honda’s newly developed in-house EV architecture, a significant step forward for the automaker’s electrification plans.

Read: Acura Plots Electric Future To Reverse Declining Sales And Reignite Brand Appeal

The introduction of the RSX is part of Acura’s plans to claw itself back up the sales charts. The automaker lost market share to competitors in 2024, as multiple models recorded double-digit drops in 2024. This will be only the second production EV to appear with an Acura badge on it, with executives highlighting the need for more battery-electric offerings.

A New EV Platform From Honda

The Honda-developed EV platform has already been shown off at CES 2025, underpinning the Honda 0 Series Saloon and SUV prototypes that will evolve into production models next year. Honda’s aim with its new EV platform will be to create lighter vehicles, as well as to reduce the overall height that most EVs require to fit their batteries inside the floor.

New Acura RSX Shows Its Face Ahead Of Debut

The new Acura RSX will also be the first EV produced at Honda’s new “EV Hub” in Ohio. The facilities at the Marysville Auto Plant, the East Liberty Auto Plant, and the Anna Engine Plant are undergoing a $700 million makeover and retooling. The Anna Engine Plant will be where the megacasting for Honda’s new Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) is made.

The IPU is a big step forward in Honda and Acura’s ambitions for EVs, serving as an integral part of the new EV platform. It’s also much larger than anything that Honda has die-cast before, and the initial development in North America, using domestic and globally sourced parts, is a win for American manufacturing.

Coupe Dreams Dashed

When news broke that the RSX name had been trademarked, first in Japan and then in the U.S., many predicted that the reborn nameplate would be affixed to a sporty coupe. Although the Integra nameplate has been revived, the fact that it’s attached to a four-door sedan rather than a sporty coupe has been a sore point for longtime fans of the brand. The fact that Honda has revived the Prelude name even made some wonder if the new Acura RSX would be a more premium riff on the new coupe.

Instead, Acura takes a leaf from Mitsubishi by turning one of their beloved coupe nameplates into an SUV. When asked by CarScoops as to why the company opted to revive the RSX name for an electric SUV and not a sports car, a spokesperson said, “We believe RSX is the right name for our new all-electric SUV. This isn’t a “revival” of the previous RSX coupe. Globally, that model was sold and marketed as Integra, and we have seen resounding fan enthusiasm for the 5th gen Integra  — especially with the Type S.”

New Acura RSX Shows Its Face Ahead Of Debut
The Acura Performance EV Concept

The RSX is said to take inspiration from the speedboat-like Performance EV Concept. From the one image we’ve been furnished with, it appears the new model retains some of the elements of the concept but goes for an overall more conventional approach.

The dramatic NSX-inspired rear appears to have given way to something more reminiscent of a BMW X6 or Tesla Model Y. Meanwhile, the coupe-like roofline has been profiled to be, well, less coupe-like. Still, it’s early days.

Acura hasn’t confirmed a firm on-sale date, but prototypes of the all-electric RSX will begin real-world testing this week. What we do know is that it’ll be the first car from either Honda or Acura to be built on the new EV platform at the Ohio EV Hub, so expect to start seeing the new RSX in showrooms in early 2026.

Honda’s Smallest Electric Car Can Power Your Home And More

  • Honda has revealed its smallest electric car, the N-One e:.
  • The tiny EV can be used to power a home or other devices.
  • Its single electric motor is expected to make 63 hp (47 kW).

It may be small in size, but Honda’s cute N-One e: prototype made a big splash at this month’s Goodwood Festival of Speed even if it didn’t make a lot of noise in the process. Now, the production version of this pint-sized electric car has made its official debut in Japan.

An electric kei microcar, the N-One e: is a slab-sided, high-roof, boxy city car with a friendly robot-like face and tiny wheels that make it look cute and gawky at the same time. Unlike the Goodwood car, which featured fender flares, the Japanese version goes without to ensure it complies with the kei rules that govern everything from external dimensions to power outputs.

Built for Kei Compliance

So although Honda hasn’t revealed much in the way of technical spec, we can be sure it measures less than 3,400 mm (133.9inches) long and produces no more than 63 hp (64 PS / 47 kW) from its single electric motor.

Its electric hardware is almost certainly shared with the taller N-Van e: revealed last year, which Honda claimed could travel 152 miles (245 km) on a charge – the N-One will eke out a few more miles than that. The N-Van accepts 50 kW DC charging, which is slow, but the small battery can be charged in around 30 minutes.

Simple, Practical Interior With Smart Touches

\\\\\

The N-One’s interior looks simple, but not totally basic, and we like the fact that there are plenty of physical buttons and a rotary volume dial on the media screen. The transmission selector on the console looks much like the one on Hondas familiar to us in Europe and the US, and a simple button to the right allows the driver to easily engage a one-pedal mode.

A shelf below the touchscreen provides an obvious place to leave your smartphone within easy reach of the charging port (no wireless charging here) and the rear seats fold flat with a 50:50 split to maximize practicality. But the real headline feature is the V2L function that allows owners to use the N-One to power their homes during outages or other devices like electric bikes or laptops.

V2L Capability Adds Real-World Utility

To use V2L, owners will need to purchase an adaptor from Honda’s accessory catalog, which also includes a dash-top LED indicator to let you know how full the battery is and a sporty cosmetic kit with twin Shelby-style stripes running front to back.

Japanese sales of the N-One begin this September, the same month Honda is expected to give the pint-sized EV its European debut at the IAA in Munich. Sadly, there are no plans to bring the car to the US.

One Cheap Adapter Unlocks A Huge Perk For Acura And Honda EV Owners

  • A new adapter allows Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX to access Tesla Superchargers.
  • Tesla app is initially required, with future integration planned in Honda’s native software.
  • Future Honda 0 Series models will include native NACS ports from 2026 onward.

Honda and Acura electric vehicle drivers now have a significantly broader charging network at their disposal. The Prologue and ZDX crossovers can officially plug into Tesla’s Supercharger network across North America, thanks to a newly approved adapter.

Both models continue to use the CCS (Combined Charging System) port but are now compatible with Tesla’s NACS (North American Charging Standard) through this accessory, which is available for $225.

The company says that the approved adapter has been “tested for performance and compatibility” with the Prologue and ZDX, ensuring a “reliable charging experience”. While aftermarket solutions are available, Honda says that “damage caused to a vehicle resulting from the use of an unapproved adapter may not be covered under vehicles’ limited warranties”.

The official NACS adapter is currently on sale through authorized Honda and Acura dealerships, as well as via the Honda DreamShop website, all priced at $225.

Initially, Honda and Acura EV owners will have to log into the Tesla app to use a Tesla Supercharger, but the automaker has promised future integration with the HondaLink and Acura EV applications. Furthermore, the standard Google built-in Maps on the infotainment allows owners to locate Tesla Superchargers.

Honda

As of June 2025, the company has sold 49,334 units of the Honda Prologue and 17,726 units of the Acura ZDX in the US market, meaning that the news affects a pool of 67,060 EV owners. Both electric crossovers were developed in collaboration with GM.

The first Honda models equipped with a North American Charging Standard (NCAS) port will be the production versions of the 0 Series sedan and SUV, scheduled to reach dealers in 2026.

The deal between Honda and Tesla was first announced in 2023, following a similar move by several other automakers. The Tesla Supercharger network now includes more than 23,500 locations across the United States. By 2030, Honda and Acura EV owners are expected to have access to roughly 100,000 DC fast chargers throughout North America, spanning multiple charging networks.

Type R Is Dead In Europe But What Comes Next Might Shock You

  • The Type R badge will disappear from all new Honda models sold in Europe next year.
  • Honda exec hints that the Type R formula could change depending on market demand.
  • The statement echoes CES rumors that an electric Type R may already be in development.

The Honda Civic Type R is dying in Europe. But rather than mourn the badge’s demise, Honda is seemingly already looking ahead to the future, and that could very well involve electrification.

Whether the injection of electricity comes in the form of a hybrid or a full-blown EV, similar to Hyundai’s Ioniq 5N, remains to be seen. Currently, the Civic Type R is leaving European shores due to its non-conformance with the new EU mandate of the GSR2 legislation, which requires the installation of driver monitoring technology.

An Electric Future May Be On The Cards

While the FL5-generation Type R is winding down in Europe, it will continue to be available in the US and Japan for the foreseeable future. If it were to return, likely in a new generation, could it become an EV?

Read: Honda Kills Its Hottest Car In Europe But It’s Not Going Quietly

Well, while speaking to AutoExpress at the recent launch of Honda’s new Prelude, project leader Tomoyuki Yamagami hinted that the future of Type R isn’t bound to its ICE heritage. In his words, “Type R can be anything in the future, depending on what the market demands…Type R is not dependent on a turbo powertrain,” emphasizing that the essence of the badge lies in maximizing dynamic performance, not strictly in the specifics of its powertrain.

Type R Is Dead In Europe But What Comes Next Might Shock You

That view certainly aligns with what Honda’s BEV Center revealed at CES earlier this year. There, Toshihiro Akiwa, head of Honda’s BEV Development, elaborated on what a possible electric Type R may hold in store.

Electric motors change the equation. There’s no high-revving VTEC, no turbo spool, and none of the usual auditory cues enthusiasts associate with performance. Akiwa says the challenge is how to translate these characteristics into a thrilling driving experience that remains true to the Type R spirit: “It’s not just about power, it’s about the sound, vibration, acceleration, and human experience. These are the joys of driving.”

Next-Gen Platform Is Already in Motion

Honda’s push into electrification kicks off in earnest with two new EVs, the 0 Series saloon and midsize SUV, set for production in 2026. These will be the first of seven new models built on Honda’s next-gen electric platform.

While Type R variants of these models haven’t been officially confirmed, the platform is expected to support power outputs of up to 480 hp, leaving plenty of headroom for a future electric hot hatch to make its mark.

Honda Pulls Plug On Key Electric SUV For US Market

  • Honda reportedly canceled development of a large electric SUV for the US market.
  • The automaker has shifted focus toward hybrid models that are in higher demand.
  • A midsize Honda 0 Series SUV and sedan remain on schedule for 2026 US launch.

As more buyers gravitate toward hybrids over fully electric vehicles, automakers are rethinking their EV roadmaps. Among them is Honda, which has reportedly shelved plans for a large electric SUV intended for the US market as it reevaluates its electrification strategy.

More: Honda’s Future Is Packed With New Models And It Isn’t All Electric

The decision seems tied to the slower-than-expected pace of EV adoption in the US. A recent tax bill passed under the Trump administration may have also played a role, rolling back key EV incentives and making electric models less appealing to cost-conscious buyers.

Cost Challenges and Changing Priorities

According to a report from Nikkei Asia, development and procurement costs for larger EVs are significantly higher, mainly due to the size and expense of the battery packs. Honda appears to have concluded that the financial risk of launching a large EV in this environment wasn’t worth taking, especially with the model originally scheduled for a 2027 debut.

The now-canceled SUV was meant to round out a lineup that includes a midsize electric SUV and sedan, both of which have already appeared in near-production form and are still expected to launch in 2026 as part of Honda 0 Series concepts. Honda’s broader plan was to offer seven EVs in the US by 2030, a target that now looks less certain.

Electrification Pullback, Hybrid Push

Honda Pulls Plug On Key Electric SUV For US Market
Both of the Honda 0 Series concepts will evolve into production EVs.

In May, Honda announced it had reduced its investment in electrification from ¥10 trillion ($69 billion) to ¥7 trillion ($48 billion). The company is now placing more emphasis on hybrid models, which will result in a scaled-back EV rollout.

Between 2027 and 2031, Honda aims to introduce 13 new-generation hybrids worldwide, targeting 2.2 million hybrid sales by 2030. This lineup will include a new large SUV designed specifically for the North American market, which could effectively replace the scrapped electric version.

Earlier this year, we reported a notable uptick in Honda Prologue sales, with a 963% increase in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. Still, total sales stood at just 16,318 units, making it the lowest-selling model in Honda’s US portfolio. Despite the sharp percentage gain, the numbers underscore the ongoing challenges in the EV segment.

Of course, Honda is not the only automaker that has delayed its EV plans. Nissan has canceled two EVs originally planned to be produced in the US, Ford has paused development of large EVs, while Toyota has postponed the production of a large electric SUV from 2026 to 2028.

Sales Of Honda’s Only American EV Soar 963%

  • The carmaker has sold 16,318 Prologues through the first half of the year.
  • In June alone, Honda sold 2,799 Prologues, a huge spike from last year.
  • Buyers also appear to be flocking to the recently updated Passport and Odyssey.

Honda saw its sales increase in the United States through the first six months of the year. Sales data shows that some of the brand’s long-standing models are continuing to sell well, while some newer additions to the Honda range are also proving popular, including the updated Odyssey, Passport, and the all-electric Prologue.

Starting with the Prologue, a total of 2,799 examples found new homes in June. This represented a massive 237.2 percent spike from the 830 sold in June 2024. Year-to-date sales have also jumped by a huge 963 percent from 1,535 examples to 16,318 through the first half of 2025.

However, while the Prologue is selling well compared to the same period last year, it’s not smashing monthly sales records. In fact, in November 2024 alone, Honda sold 6,823 Prologues in the United States as shoppers rushed to get their hands on the new model. Additionally, the Prologue has been Honda’s lowest-selling model through the first half of 2025. Evidently, a large proportion of Honda buyers remains uninterested in an electric SUV, but the trend is still positive.

Sales Of Honda’s Only American EV Soar 963%

Sales of the Honda Passport are proving particularly strong this year. 4,433 were sold this June, a 67.7 percent rise from the 2,644 sold in June 2024. Year-to-date sales are also up 66.1 percent to 27,068 from 16,293. Honda didn’t break down how many of the Passports sold were the older model, and how many were for the 2026 version, which started to arrive at dealerships in February.

Honda’s Odyssey is also performing well. It was updated roughly twelve months ago, and through the first half, 50,033 were sold, a 27.4 percent rise from last year. Sales soared 38.1 percent in June to 9,542.

In total, Honda managed to sell 670,765 vehicles in the first half of 2025, a 7.1 percent rise. In June, it sold 103,574, a 1.2 percent rise. Over at Acura, its year-to-date sales increased by 6.8 percent to 68,386, while in June, 10,912 new Acura models were sold, equating to a 5.4 percent rise.

Honda And Sony’s New EV Has Lost Over $360M Before Even Launching

  • Honda and Sony posted a ¥52 billion ($362 million) loss for their Afeela EV project.
  • Last year, Honda Sony Mobility posted a loss of ¥20.5 billion ($143 million).
  • Analysts worry that this signals the challenges of entering the luxury EV market.

A decade ago, Honda and Sony partnering with each other would have resulted in a Gran Turismo concept at best. However, today it has translated into the sleek-looking Afeela Joint EV project. But there’s one problem: before even selling a single car, Sony Honda Mobility has posted an operating loss of approximately $362 million (¥52 billion).

It’s not just a matter of pre-launch development expenses either. According to recently released financial disclosures, losses more than doubled compared to last year’s ¥20.5 billion deficit, highlighting just how expensive it is to play catch-up in the premium EV market. Set to debut later this year, the Afeela will command a starting price of $89,900, a clear sign of the market positioning the joint venture targets, but also underscoring the challenges of recouping such heavy upfront investments.

A Challenging Entry

Any new car launch is going to incur losses to begin with; that’s practically a given. And with Honda and Sony’s war chest seemingly well-stocked (combined, the two Japanese companies pocketed over ¥2.6 trillion in operating profit last fiscal year), it’s unlikely that the project will put either at financial risk.

Read: Watch Sony Exec Drive Afeela EV With A PlayStation Controller

But the market Afeela will be entering won’t be without its hurdles. Analysts suggest that luxury electric vehicles, while highly attractive to premium buyers, typically come with high development costs: think extensive R&D, complex software integrations, and the pricey task of prototype building. Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Tatsuo Yoshida points out that although the high sticker price of the Afeela aims to offset these expenses, fully covering these substantial costs through sales alone might prove challenging.

Late To The Party

Honda And Sony’s New EV Has Lost Over $360M Before Even Launching

Adding to the complexity, the Afeela will launch into a market where Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and other established players already dominate (and that’s without mentioning the Chinese, of course…) , making Sony and Honda’s mission to carve out their own niche all the more difficult. But both companies remain confident, banking on a combination of Honda’s proven engineering expertise and Sony’s strength in software and entertainment tech to win over buyers.

Whether the Afeela becomes a hit or remains an ambitious footnote, the venture highlights one thing clearly: even for giants like Sony and Honda, the transition to electric luxury is neither cheap nor easy.

  • Honda has unveiled an electric quadricycle, which will be launched later this year.
  • The model is designed for last-mile deliveries in North America and Europe.
  • Multiple configurations will be available and one will have up to 23 miles of range.

Honda has launched a new micromobility company, called Fastport, and announced plans to show its first product at Eurobike later this month. Known as the eQuad, the electric quadricycle is a last-mile delivery vehicle intended for use in urban areas.

The rolling oddity is a far cry from the Acura NSX, but it aims to reduce urban congestion while also meeting rising consumer demand for faster, more frequent deliveries. As part of this effort, the eQuad is designed for use in bike lanes and will be offered in a variety of configurations to meet customer demand.

Honda mentioned Small and Large eQuads as well as Small and Large cargo boxes, which will enable the model to “cater to a wide range of uses – including parcel, grocery, and small package deliveries.” The Small model measures 133.9 inches (3,400 mm) long, 39.4 inches (1,000 mm) wide, and 82.7 inches (2,100 mm) tall, while the Large eQuad comes in at 144 inches (3,658 mm) long, 48 inches (1,219 mm) wide, and 84 inches (2,134 mm) tall.

They’ll have cargo boxes offering roughly 96 to 148 cubic feet (2,718 to 4,191 liters) of space. Furthermore, we can expect payload capacities of 320 lbs (145 kg) and 650 lbs (295 kg).

On the styling front, there isn’t much to report as the eQuad is essentially a box on wheels. That being said, there’s a central bike-like seat and two handle bars. They’re joined by a sizable display, which acts as a digital instrument cluster and infotainment system. The model also sports lights, mirrors, a UV-coated canopy, and a fan to help keep the driver comfortable.

Honda didn’t release many specifications, but confirmed the eQuad will have a top speed of 12 mph (20 km/h). The company also said the Small model will have a range of up to 23 miles (37 km), although the actual distance depends on the payload.

The automaker added the eQuad has a “pedal-by-wire pedal-assist powertrain” that uses swappable batteries. They’re joined by a regenerative braking system as well as automatic parking brakes.

The eQuad will be built at the Honda Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio, which was recently home to the NSX. Initial European and North American deliveries are slated to begin in late 2025, before production ramps up the following year.

Update: Following its appearance at Goodwood, Honda released the first teaser image of the production model, this time without any camouflage. The company also confirmed the vehicle’s name as the ‘N-ONE e:’. We’ve now learned that it’s scheduled to debut in September, likely pointing to a full unveiling at the IAA Mobility show in Munich that same month.

The cropped image reveals the familiar, charming face of a Kei-sized car, complete with expressive round LED headlamps. However, what caught our attention is that, aside from the charging port on the left side, there also appears to be a second port on the right. The function of this additional port remains unclear.

Honda’s Cutest EV Yet Revealed Its Face And Something Strange Too

The Goodwood Festival of Speed took place this past weekend, and Honda used the event to unveil an electric urban vehicle concept. Called the Super EV, the concept is a thinly veiled production model that will technically serve as a successor to the Honda e.

The automaker isn’t saying much at this point, but the study is a five-door hatchback that recalls the Nissan Cube. It features a curvaceous front bumper and a fully enclosed grille with an integrated charging port. They’re joined by circular headlights and vertical air curtains.

Moving further back, we can see a short hood and bulging fenders. The concept also has an upright windscreen, slender pillars, and a relatively flat roof.

While Honda was tight-lipped about specifics, they said the concept was “designed to demonstrate how an A-segment model might offer fresh, fun-to-drive electric performance alongside trademark Honda usability.” They added the “small, sporty model has already carried out feasibility testing in the UK in the lead-up to the event – as part of a wider global program,” once again hinting at production.

A Lot Of Other Things To See

Besides the new EV concept, Honda staged the European premiere of the 0 SUV prototype. It was accompanied by the EV Fun and EV Urban concepts, which are an electric motorcycle and scooter.

They were joined by the new Prelude, which tackled the famous hill climb. Other notable highlights include the Honda-powered Williams FW11, the Civic Type R Ultimate Edition, and a Miimo robotic lawnmower.
