VW Is Making A New GTI, But Not The One We Want

  • VW is preparing a 335 hp rear-drive ID.3 GTI to launch sometime next year.
  • It will slot above the GTX Performance with minor power and chassis upgrades.
  • Pricing in Europe is likely to exceed that of both the Golf GTI and Clubsport trims.

Volkswagen isn’t wasting time signaling that the GTI nameplate won’t be left behind in the EV transition. The German automaker dropped a pretty clear hint when it rolled out the ID. GTI Concept at the 2023 Munich Motor Show. While that concept was aimed at previewing the upcoming ID.2 GTI, signs now point to an ID.3 GTI being next in line.

According to a report from Auto Motor und Sport, the car will slot above the ID.3 GTX Performance, which features a 79 kWh battery pack and an electric motor developing 322 hp (240 kW / 326 PS) and 402 lb-ft (545 Nm) of torque. This setup enables the hot hatch to accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 5.7 seconds and have a WLTP range of up to 373 miles (602 km).

While little is known about the GTI variant at this point, the publication says it will arrive next year and be rear-wheel drive. However, don’t expect it to be significantly more powerful than the ID.3 GTX Performance.

Quite the opposite as they suggest the car could only have around 335 hp (250 kW / 340 PS). That’s not much of a boost, but the upgraded powertrain could be accompanied by “extensive modifications to the chassis … intended to enable even more agile handling.”

\\\\\\\\\\\\

Besides the performance and handling tweaks, the car would likely incorporate a number of GTI styling cues. The hot hatch should also build on the ID.3 GTX Performance, which has revised steering, a retuned suspension, and an available DCC adaptive chassis system.

All of this will likely lead to steep pricing as the ID.3 GTX Performance starts at €48,725 ($54,706) in Germany. To put that into perspective, the Golf GTI starts at €45,655 ($51,255) while the GTI Clubsport begins at €49,225 ($55,263).

Stellantis’ Presidential Ride Is A French Flag On Wheels

  • DS Automobiles has unveiled a new car for the President of the French Republic.
  • It’s a one-off DS N°8, which is armored and features a host of special touches.
  • The interior is the star of the show thanks to blue leather and straw marquetry.

French President Emmanuel Macron has a new ride as DS Automobiles has unveiled the Presidential DS N°8. Introduced as part of the 80th anniversary celebrations for V-E Day, the one-off model sports an assortment of special touches.

Starting outside, there’s a unique Sapphire Blue exterior with contrasting black accents. They’re joined by a special DS Luminascreeen grille, which illuminates blue, white, and red as a nod to the French flag. Speaking of which, there are flag holders on the front bumper. The model also sports a retractable soft top as well as blue, white, and red badges.

The blue theme continues inside with Dream Blue Alcantara and Nappa leather upholstery. They’re accompanied by pleated door panels, pearl contrast stitching, and a Focal audio system.

More notably, the Presidential DS N°8 has beautiful straw marquetry. It’s made from rye straw, which has been dyed and arranged in an elegant fan pattern. The resulting trim looks fantastic and is an interesting departure from the typical wood found in luxury cars.

\\\\

The company didn’t say much else about the interior, but it appears to feature a familiar digital instrument cluster and 16-inch infotainment system. We can also see a handful of special controls hidden beneath the floating center console. Some of these appear to operate flashing lights and, perhaps, a siren.

DS was tight-lipped about powertrain specifics, but confirmed the model has a range of up to 466 miles (750 km). This suggests the Presidential DS N°8 is based on the Long Range FWD variant, which has a 97.2 kWh battery pack as well as a 242 hp (180 kW / 245 PS) electric motor. However, we probably shouldn’t read too much into those numbers as the car is armored and this will undoubtedly impact its performance.

AUDI’s Capitalized EV Has A Laughably Lowercase Frunk

  • After its debut in Shanghai, the AUDI E5 Sportback is grabbing plenty of attention.
  • However, it’s not the kind the brand wants as its tiny frunk has become an online joke.
  • The electric E5 Sportback will be launched in China this summer offering up to 776 hp.

Audi’s AUDI, which, ironically, is not an Audi, has always struck us as a bit ridiculous, and that seems to be a theme for the model. Not only does it sport a name that sounds like it was picked by the least imaginative people on Earth, but it also comes with a ridiculously small frunk.

How small? Roughly the size of a shoe box judging by an image that has surfaced on social media. While there’s no immediate word on its dimensions or capacity, opening the hood reveals a large expanse of black plastic. In the center is a small opening, which appears to be carpeted and barely useful.

While some frunk is better than no frunk at all, the AUDI E5 Sportback’s compartment is far from impressive. This helps to explain the strong reaction on social media.

Set to be launched in China this summer, the E5 Sportback is a glorified wagon that lacks a four-ring logo. The model also features a “reinterpretation of the familiar Singleframe” grille with a Light Frame surround. The latter consists of more than 1,000 individual lights and they’re joined by Matrix LED headlights. Other notable highlights include digital side mirrors and frameless doors.

In terms of size, the model measures 192.2 inches (4,881 mm) long, 77.1 inches (1,959 mm) wide, and 58.2 inches (1,478 mm) tall. This means the E5 is 4.3 inches (109 mm) shorter than the redesigned A6.

The company hasn’t said much about the interior, but it’s dominated by a 59-inch pillar-to-pillar display. Two screens showing footage from the digital side mirrors act as bookends and the display-focused setup gives the car a high-tech persona.

\\\\

The rest of the cabin sports a minimalist design largely devoid of switchgear. However, there’s a 50 watt wireless smartphone charger, a Bose audio system, and an electrochromic sunroof. Buyers will also find an AI assistant, chestnut wood trim, and a fragrance diffuser.

The car rides on the Advanced Digitized Platform and will offer rear- and all-wheel drive. These will have outputs ranging from 295 hp (220 kW / 299 PS) to 776 hp (579 kW / 787 PS). The latter variant will rocket from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in a mere 3.4 seconds.

AUDI has been coy on additional details, but the E5 will be offered with up to a 100 kWh battery pack. This will provide a range of up to 478 miles (770 km). When the battery is low, an ultra-fast charger can deliver 230 miles (370 km) of range in as little as ten minutes.

The E5 Sportback also promises to have advanced driver assistance systems that will make commutes a breeze. Besides the roof-mounted LiDAR sensor, there are three long-range millimeter-wave radars, twelve ultrasonic sensors, eleven cameras, and several multi-modal sensing units.

BMW’s Second-Gen X7 Is Surprisingly Familiar And Very Different All At Once

  • The second-generation BMW X7 has been spied undergoing testing for the first time.
  • The model sports an evolutionary design and appears to eschew the Neue Klasse look.
  • Expected to arrive in 2027, it could be offered with gas, diesel, and electric options.

The BMW X7 has been a popular addition to the lineup and finished 2024 as the brand’s fifth best-selling vehicle in America. While sales were up 12.5% last year, the crossover is getting old as it originally debuted in 2018.

BMW is getting ready to address this as spy photographers have snapped the first pictures of the second-generation X7. Caught undergoing testing in Europe, the model sports an evolutionary design that eschews the Neue Klasse look. This is a surprising development as the redesigned X5 has already been spotted with the retro-futuristic aesthetic.

While changes are possible, the prototype sports an evolutionary front fascia with a familiar grille that is flanked by split lighting units. They’re joined by a new front bumper, which sports a pronounced horizontal element as well as a wide lower intake.

Moving further back, we can see an evolutionary but streamlined design. As part of this effort, there’s more curvaceous bodywork and new Ford Mustang Mach-E style door pulls. They’re joined by an upward sweeping beltline, sizable wheels, and a beefy braking system with blue calipers up front.

\\\\\\\\\\\

SHProshots

The rear end is heavily disguised, but the license plate recess has been moved from the liftgate to the bumper. Elsewhere, there’s a four-tailpipe exhaust system and what appears to be a longer spoiler.

Since the crossover is still a ways out, little is known about it. However, it’s expected to ride on the newer CLAR-WE platform and be offered with an assortment of gasoline and diesel engines. More interestingly, we can expect a fully electric iX7 variant. This promises to provide a powertrain for everyone as well as give the upcoming Genesis GV90 some electrifying competition.

Jeep Dealers Beg Wagoneer S Buyers With Desperate Price Cuts

  • Several dealers have the Jeep Wagoneer S listed for nearly $25,000 below MSRP.
  • The electric SUV starts at $66,995 and features 500 hp as well as 294 miles of range.
  • After discounts and incentives, dealers are advertising the Limited trim for around $43,000.

The Jeep Wagoneer S fire sale has entered a new phase of desperation as we’ve found multiple dealers offering 2025 models for nearly $25,000 below MSRP. This comes three months after the automaker introduced a cheaper Limited trim as part of its effort to boost sales.

While the 2025 Jeep Wagoneer S Limited starts at $66,995 before a $1,795 destination fee, it appears dealers are waving the white flag. This includes Jimmy Britt Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, which has one of their EVs listed for $43,104 despite carrying an MSRP of $67,590.

More: 2025 Jeep Wagoneer S Gets New Base Trim, But It Locks Performance Behind A Paywall

That’s a savings of $24,486, which is insane when you consider the 2025 Compass starts at $26,900. However, it’s important to note that price has every discount and incentive applied. This includes $7,665 from the dealer themselves, as well as the $7,500 federal tax credit, and an extra $5,821 off as part of Stellantis’ employee pricing for all program.

Jeep Dealers Beg Wagoneer S Buyers With Desperate Price Cuts

Down in Florida, there’s a similar deal at Taverna Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Fiat. Their $67,590 Wagoneer S has been discounted to $43,138. However, they’ve striked out that price, so you could potentially get the crossover for even less.

Chris Nikel Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram Fiat in Oklahoma has one of their Wagoneer S’ listed for $43,425. That’s $24,165 below sticker, meaning you could buy a $17,190 Nissan Versa with the savings and not have to deal with charging on long road trips.

Jeep Dealers Beg Wagoneer S Buyers With Desperate Price Cuts

While those are just a few examples, there are multiple other dealers to choose from. Of course, this isn’t too surprising as Jeep only sold 2,595 units during the first quarter. If that trend continues, the automaker is only looking at selling 10,380 for the entire year.

While those numbers sound terrible, Wagoneer S sales weren’t far behind those of the Mustang Mach-E. Ford only sold 2,927 in Q1, which was a 40.2% decline. That’s bad news for both companies, but buyers can likely expect motivated dealers.

What Were They Thinking? Mercedes CLA EV Can Only Use 800V DC Fast Chargers

  • The Mercedes CLA EV reportedly lacks a DC/DC booster, limiting it to 800V DC fast chargers.
  • This means the car can only be recharged at certain stations, which could leave owners in a lurch.
  • Mercedes isn’t saying much about the move, but it’s an odd oversight for a luxury vehicle.

It’s easy to hate on the redesigned Mercedes CLA as it doesn’t look particularly good and its interior is a soulless compartment filled with screens. On top of that, the electric variants have terrible names including CLA 250+ with EQ Technology and CLA 350 4MATIC with EQ Technology.

It appears that’s just scratching the surface as a new report says the EV doesn’t support 400V DC fast charging. According to Wards Auto, the model lacks a 400V-to-800V DC/DC converter and this significantly limits where the car can be recharged. Non-compatible stations are said to include “50 kW public chargers and a large portion of Tesla’s current Supercharger network.”

More: Starry But Soulless 2026 Mercedes CLA Leans On AI And Electric Power

It sounds like the restriction is a result of Mercedes’ push for a 320 kW DC fast charging capability, which enables the car to go from a 10-80% charge in as little as 22 minutes. As the publication explained, “Because CCS cables are limited to 500 amps, 800 volts is necessary to exceed a 200 kW charging speed.”

However, other automakers – such as Hyundai and Kia – use a DC-to-DC voltage booster to allow for fast charging as well as broad support. This isn’t a great look for a luxury brand as it comes off as a penny pinching move that harms consumers by limiting their access to charging stations.

\\\\\\\\\

Mercedes reportedly declined to say why they didn’t include a voltage booster in the CLA and it will likely catch some owners off guard. We looked at webpages and configurators for the car in multiple countries and found no mention of the restriction. However, Wards Auto said there is a disclaimer noting “charging at 400V charging stations is not possible, and for this reason, they are not shown in the navigation system.”

It’s unclear if this issue is limited to the launch model, but the publication pointed to speculation suggesting the Norwegian-spec car will come with a DC/DC booster. This implies a market specific approach, although customers might want to hold off for the time being.

His Hyundai Ioniq 5 Battery Still Held 88% After 360,000 Miles

  • A Hyundai Ioniq 5 in South Korea has been driven for more than 416,940 miles.
  • At 360,395 miles, the car was trouble free and the battery’s health was 87.7%.
  • At the 410,105 mile mark, the owner saved an estimated $21,530 in refueling costs.

Battery degradation is a serious concern and one that can cost owners dearly. While pricing varies by model and capacity, a new battery pack can cost tens of thousands of dollars. That’s what makes Lee Young-Heum’s Hyundai Ioniq 5 so interesting. He worked as a traveling salesman and racked up some serious mileage. In 2 years and 9 months, he’d traveled 360,395 miles (580,000 km) in the EV.

More: Hyundai Ioniq 5 Owner Hits 414,000 Miles, Gets Free Battery Swap After 360,000 Miles

This caught the attention of the Hyundai-Kia Research Institute, which wanted to examine how the battery and powertrain were holding up. While Lee reportedly didn’t have any problems, the company replaced his battery and motor free of charge, so they could look at the used components.

This examination revealed that after traveling such a massive distance – more than what separates the earth from the moon – the battery’s state of health was 87.7%. That’s an impressive number, especially when you consider that Lee used rapid charging, which is “known to put a huge burden on electric vehicle batteries.”

His Hyundai Ioniq 5 Battery Still Held 88% After 360,000 Miles

As Hyundai’s Yoon Dal-Young explained, “When developing a battery, we need to create a prediction model for durability performance and check whether this model matches actual usage results. That’s why we have actually checked the batteries of customer vehicles with high cumulative mileage.” The automaker typically uses taxis for these examinations, but Lee’s car had the highest mileage they had seen on an Ioniq 5.

Maintenance And Fuel Savings Are Huge

Lee said that when he drove a vehicle with an internal combustion engine, he’d get the oil changed every 15 days due to driving so much. Despite this regular maintenance, he had to replace engine and powertrain components “continuously.”

He says that’s not the case with the Ioniq 5 as he’s only had to replace “the most basic consumables.” The automaker noted at 410,105 miles (660,000 km), he would have had to have 66 oil changes, 8 spark plug replacements, 13 brake fluid changes, and 11 transmission oil changes on a Tucson. That’s on top of wear and tear.

Hyundai estimates this maintenance would cost $8,612 to $9,330 (₩12 to ₩13 million). The estimated price tag for the Ioniq 5 is significantly less at $1,076 (₩1.5 million).

His Hyundai Ioniq 5 Battery Still Held 88% After 360,000 Miles

Lee also saved a boatload in refueling costs as Hyundai estimated a turbocharged 1.6-liter Tucson would have required around $57,412 (₩80 million) worth of fuel. That stands in stark contrast to an estimated charging cost of around $35,882 (₩50 million). We’ll do the math for you and note that’s a savings of $21,530 (₩30 million).

Besides saving a ton of money, the Ioniq 5 was largely trouble free. However, after 403,891 miles (650,000 km) the car stopped slow charging. This was reportedly because the on board charger had reached the end of its lifespan and “died a ‘natural death.’”

The car still appears to be going strong and has over 416,940 miles (671,000 km) on the odometer. However, it’s getting a much-needed break as Lee recently switched jobs and will now be driving less.

BMW’s Next M3 Will Offer New Type Of Gas Engine And EV

  • BMW’s Head of Neue Klasse confirmed the next M3 will offer both EV and ICE versions.
  • The gas-powered M3 will feature a “new type of six-cylinder engine” for traditional fans.
  • Both models will share styling, but the iM3 could emerge as the performance leader.

BMW has been teasing the i3 / 3-Series Neue Klasse for months and now they’re ready to talk about the next-generation M3. It will reportedly arrive within the next two years and be offered as an EV as well as an ICE-powered model.

This had been expected, but BMW’s Dr. Mike Reichelt recently confirmed the news to Top Gear. As he told the publication, “We’re … going to offer it with a new type of six-cylinder engine, because we understand it may be early for some committed M fans to make the switch.” However, he said they’re “convinced the fully-electric M3 is going to hit new heights and reach new target groups, because it’ll behave completely differently.”

More: BMW Vision Vehicle Is Our Best Look Yet At The iM3 Neue Klasse

BMW’s Neue Klasse boss went on to say both the electric and ICE-powered M3 will have the “same design and digital features.” However, they won’t be all about 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) times.

Quite the opposite as the company is focused on driving dynamics and this is where their Heart of Joy comes into play. While the name sounds like a dumb marketing gimmick, BMW has previously described the system as a control unit that manages the powertrain, brakes, steering, and recuperation system. That doesn’t sound too remarkable, but the Heart of Joy processes information ten times faster than previous systems.

BMW’s Next M3 Will Offer New Type Of Gas Engine And EV
The BMW Vision Driving Experience concept gives us our closest look yet at the iM3.

This promises to deliver a “whole new level of speed and precision” as well as a more symbiotic relationship between the various components. Speaking of which, the interaction between the powertrain, brakes, and energy recuperation system means drivers won’t need to apply the brakes in most situations. This promises to help increase efficiency by up to 25%.

Getting back to the interview, Reichelt said you’ll be able to “go into a bend with a certain steering angle and don’t need to make corrections mid-corner.” This, of course, could be a good or bad thing depending on how ‘pure’ you like your driving experience.

A Secret Ram EV Truck You Never Heard Of Just Sparked A Multi-Million Lawsuit

  • Ram was working on an electric heavy duty pickup that would have slotted above the 1500 REV.
  • The model was reportedly axed last year, leaving suppliers fighting to recoup their investments.
  • This has sparked a $25 million lawsuit that pits Valeo against American Axle & Manufacturing.

Two years ago, Ram introduced the 1500 REV at the 2023 New York Auto Show. It was originally slated to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2024, but has now been pushed back to 2026. That’s a heck of a delay and it appears Ram was also working on an electric heavy duty pickup. The truck was slated to join the lineup in time for the 2027 model year, but the program was reportedly axed in 2024.

More: Ram Confirms 25 New Models In 18 Months And It Starts With A Bang In June

This is an interesting development as heavy duty trucks are known for diesel-power and huge towing capabilities. The latter is a significant weak spot for EVs, leading us to question who in their right mind would want an electric heavy duty pickup.

Ram appears to have answered that question with ‘no one’ as the truck was quietly killed off. However, we’re learning about it today thanks to a lawsuit discovered by Auto News.

A Secret Ram EV Truck You Never Heard Of Just Sparked A Multi-Million Lawsuit

According to the publication, Valeo is suing American Axle & Manufacturing for refusing to cover “sunk costs” related to the vehicle. Valeo reportedly spent millions developing electric motors and inverters that would be used in e-beams from American Axle.

American Axle announced a contract with Stellantis in 2023 and said the upcoming model – which was a mystery at the time – would have “both front and rear e-Beam axles that include AAM’s integrated 3-in-1 e-Drive technology.” They added the vehicle would arrive late in the decade and feature a motor, inverter and gearbox integrated into a single assembly.

While it would have been interesting to see what Ram came up with, the two suppliers are now fighting over a reported $25  (£18.6 / €21.9) million. Valeo reportedly wants to be paid for their work, while American Axle is said to be claiming the two firms never had an enforceable contract.

Huawei’s New Ultra-Luxury Sedan Gives Rolls-Royce A Run For Its Money

  • Huawei has given us a peek inside the ultra-luxurious Maextro S800 sedan.
  • The upscale interior looks nice, but cribs from BMW, Mercedes and Rolls-Royce.
  • The luxury sedan will be offered with electric and range-extended powertrains.

Huawei unveiled the Maextro S800 last year and now the company is giving us a peek inside its ultra-luxurious cabin. Unsurprisingly, it’s heavily inspired by Mercedes-Maybach and Rolls-Royce models.

Drivers sit behind an elegant two-tone steering wheel and find themselves looking at a ‘floating’ display that closely echoes the MBUX Hyperscreen. There’s no word on dimensions, but the EQS has a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 17.7-inch infotainment system, and a 12.3-inch front passenger display.

More: Huawei’s Maextro S800 Looks Like Someone Put A Maybach, A Rolls And A Porsche In The Blender

The Mercedes-like styling cues continue elsewhere as there are stylish metal speaker grilles that mimic Burmester units. They’re joined by familiar door-mounted seat controls.

Elsewhere, there are digital side mirror displays, a dual wireless smartphone charger, and a splash of wood trim on the center console. Designers also gave the car a stylish rotary knob as well as metallic accents. Buyers will also find a luxurious mix of leather and suede-like upholstery.

While the cockpit is nice, the rear passenger compartment is the star of the show. It features two individual rear seats with power adjustment as well as a foot rest. The front passenger seat also slides out of the way, so you can sit back and enjoy the ride.

\\\\\\\\

The seats are separated by an elegant leather and wood console, which features deployable tray tables. It also sports an elegant champagne flute holder and a retractable drawer. We can also expect a refrigerated compartment as well as a rear seat entertainment system.

Above, there’s a starry headliner inspired by the Rolls-Royce playbook. They’re joined by door-mounted screens that echo those found on the BMW 7-Series.

The luxury barge will be launched later this year and measure 215.7 inches (5,480  mm) long with a wheelbase spanning 132.7 inches (3,370  mm). This makes the model 0.4 inches (10 mm) longer than the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, although it has a 1 inch (25 mm) shorter wheelbase.

\\\\\\\\\

CarNewsChina reports the model is expected to be offered with an electric powertrain that features a 94.4 kWh battery pack. This should provide CLTC ranges of 416 miles (670 km) and 436 miles (702 km).

An extended-range variant is also said to be in the works with a smaller 63.3 kWh battery. It will reportedly offer electric-only ranges between 160 miles (258 km) and 193 miles (311 km).

Pricing reportedly starts at ¥1 million, which is the equivalent of $137,230. That’s not too shabby considering the Mercedes-Maybach S480 starts at ¥1.48 million ($203,100) in China.

New Range Rover Electric Has More Power Than A Twin-Turbo V8

  • Land Rover has dropped new photos and details about the Range Rover Electric.
  • The SUV features a 117 kWh battery pack that was designed and built in-house.
  • Power comes from a dual-motor all-wheel drive system producing 542 hp.

The Range Rover Electric is inching closer to production as Land Rover has announced prototypes have successfully completed their second season of cold weather testing in northern Europe. They racked up to 45,000 miles (72,420 km) validating various systems and pushing them to their limits.

Much of the focus was on the SUV’s thermal management system known as ThermAssist. It reduces heating energy consumption by up to 40% and aims to recover heat to warm the propulsion system or cabin in temperatures as low as 14°F (‑10°C). This helps to maximize range as well as efficiency.

More: Range Rover Electric Looks Ready To Tackle The Streets Of Beverly Hills

Besides testing out ThermAssist, the company worked on their air suspension and one-pedal driving mode. The latter is a common feature on EVs and allows drivers to only use the accelerator as the regenerative braking system kicks in as soon as you lift your foot off the ‘go pedal.’ However, Land Rover noted their application works with the Terrain Response system so it’s off-road ready.

The automaker went on to confirm the model has their first battery to be designed and built in‑house. The 117 kWh unit consists of 344 prismatic cells in a double‑stacked layout. The company added it has been “optimized for energy density, range and charging times” in order to deliver the “effortless performance and customary refinement expected of a Range Rover.”

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Battery aside, the Range Rover EV has an all-wheel drive system with Intelligent Driveline Dynamics technology. It can distribute rear torque from 100% to 0% to prevent a loss of traction. Furthermore, the model can respond to slips and traction changes within 50 milliseconds, which is up to 100 times quicker than an ICE vehicle.

JLR Vehicle Engineering Director Matt Becker said, “By increasing its torsional stiffness and improving its responses, we’ve been able to maintain a customary Range Rover driving experience that feels familiar.” He added this was made possible by “marrying all the essential Range Rover elements with new and advanced technologies.”

While the company didn’t reveal too many details, Top Gear is reporting the model has a dual-motor all-wheel drive system with a combined output of 542 hp (404 kW / 550 PS) and 627 lb-ft (849 Nm) of torque. If that pans out, the Range Rover Electric would be more powerful than the P530 variant, which has a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 developing 523 hp (390 kW / 530 PS) and 553 lb-ft (749 Nm) of torque.

Stellantis’ Solid-State Battery With 18-Minute Fast Charging Is Almost Ready

  • Stellantis and Factorial have successfully validated automotive-sized solid-state battery cells.
  • They have a 375 Wh/kg energy density and can go from a 15% to 90% charge in 18 minutes.
  • Dodge Charger Daytona prototypes with solid-state batteries are coming by 2026.

Last fall, Stellantis and Factorial announced plans to put solid-state batteries into a fleet of Dodge Charger Daytonas by 2026. That development is inching closer today as the two companies have successfully validated automotive-sized solid-state battery cells with a 375 Wh/kg energy density.

While that’s Greek to most of us, the automaker said they validated 77Ah FEST (Factorial Electrolyte System Technology) cells over 600 cycles and are “progressing towards automotive qualification.” The latter is a “milestone” for large-format lithium-metal solid-state batteries.

Besides having an impressive energy density, solid-state batteries allow for a significant reduction in charging time. In particular, at room temperature, they can go from a 15% to 90% charge in 18 minutes. The cells also promise to “deliver high power output with discharge rates up to 4C, supporting greater performance demands in electric vehicles.”

While work still needs to be done, Factorial’s latest electrolyte formula allows for operational temperatures between -22°F and 113°F (-30°C and 45°C). That’s a pretty wide range and would allow solid-state EVs to operate in all but the most extreme climates.

Stellantis’ Solid-State Battery With 18-Minute Fast Charging Is Almost Ready

Stellantis Chief Engineering and Technology Officer, Ned Curic, remarked “This breakthrough puts us at the forefront of the solid-state revolution, but we are not stopping there. We continue working together to push the boundaries and deliver even more advanced solutions, bringing us closer to lighter, more efficient batteries that reduce costs for our customers.”

His sentiments were echoed by Factorial Energy CEO Siyu Huang, who said “Battery development is about compromise. While optimizing one feature is simple, balancing high energy density, cycle life, fast charging, and safety in an automotive-sized battery with OEM validation is a breakthrough. This achievement with Stellantis is bringing next-generation battery technology from research to reality.”

Mercedes’ Solar Paint Could Give EVs Thousands Of Miles Of Range Every Year

  • Mercedes is working on solar ‘paintwork’ that could give EVs thousands of miles of range annually.
  • It works out to be about 24 miles per day under ideal conditions, reducing the need to recharge.
  • The company is also working on other projects to make future vehicles safer and more efficient.

Electric vehicles have come a long way, but they still have significant hurdles to overcome. One of the biggest pain points is recharging, but Mercedes is working on a clever solution to deal with it. Known as “solar paintwork,” the company is researching new types of solar modules that could be seamlessly applied to the bodies of electric vehicles.

These efforts could eventually pave the way for a wafer-thin layer of paint that could generate enough electricity to cover over 8,699 miles (14,000 km) per year.

More: Thanks To Solar Panels, The Lightyear 0 Can Go Up To Seven Months Between Charges

That’s pretty significant, but those are “under ideal conditions” in Beijing. It’s also worth noting that equates to less than 24 miles (39 km) per day, so it likely wouldn’t completely replace traditional recharging.

That being said, getting a charge by simply parking outside has a lot of appeal and numerous companies have been exploring the potential. In Mercedes’ case, they’re looking at an active photovoltaic surface with solar cells that have an efficiency rating of 20 percent.

Speaking of EVs, Mercedes is working on a programmable micro-converter that can be installed at the battery-cell level. This would make it possible to regulate cells individually and make electric vehicles even better.

As the automaker explained, “Current research results show it is possible to provide a constant HV [high voltage] output of 800 volts, regardless of the state of charge and the state of health of the individual cells.” This could pave the way for longer ranges, optimized energy flow for bidirectional charging, and new levels of freedom for modularization.

\\\

Even brakes haven’t been overlooked as the company is researching an “innovative, more sustainable brake” that is no longer located at the wheel. Instead, it’s integrated into a closed motor-transmission unit.

The automaker didn’t go into many details, but said the new brake “hardly wears out and is virtually maintenance-free.” The new setup also doesn’t rust, emit particulate emissions, or fade under high loads. It also promises to be less noisy and have positive impacts on range and efficiency.

\\\\\

Lastly, Mercedes is working with Canada’s University of Waterloo on neuromorphic computing. This mimics the way humans think and could “make AI computations significantly more energy-efficient and faster.”

Mercedes is interested as safety systems could be able to recognize traffic signs, lanes, and other road users much better and react faster, even in poor visibility. These efforts could also be up to ten times more efficient.

Given the focus on passengers, the CLA L features a unique rear seat with a cushion that has been extended by 0.4 inches (10 mm) to provide more leg support. Customers will also find softer rear seat bolsters that better balance comfort and support.

Mercedes didn’t say much else about the car, but it appears to feature a familiar 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14-inch infotainment system, and a 14-inch front passenger display. However, these run a unique version of MB.OS.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

As the company explained, the MBUX Virtual Assistant uses local voice talent as well as the DouBao AI agent from ByteDance. There’s also Chinese-specific navigation and database support.

The automaker only released a handful of powertrain details, but the EV features a rear-mounted motor that produces 268 hp (200 kW / 272 PS). The car also has an 800-volt architecture as well as a CLTC range of up to 538 miles (866 km). When the battery is low, a 320 kW DC fast charger can deliver 230 miles (370 km) of range in just ten minutes.

Mercedes added the CLA L is the “most efficient car in the segment with 93% energy efficiency from battery to wheels.” They added that, during testing, a prototype was able to travel 665 miles (1,071 km) on a single charge at an energy consumption of 8.26 kWh per 100 km (62 miles) at constant speeds.

Mercedes Announces New VLE and VLS

\\\\\\\\\\\

Besides the long-wheelbase CLA, Mercedes showed the Vision V concept. While we’ve already covered that van, the company announced two new production models known as the VLE and VLS.

The automaker didn’t elaborate, but it sounds like we can expect the E- and S-Class of vans. These will be based on the company’s new van platform and sit at the “top-end of its model portfolio.” The company went on to refer to these models as “Grand Limousines,” which will presumably battle the Lexus LM and Volvo EM90.

If You Thought The Star-Studded CLA Was Bad, Look At This Piece Of…Art

  • Mercedes has staged the U.S. debut of the 2026 CLA in New York and unveiled a new art car.
  • The latter was created in collaboration with Ice Spice and is the first of five one-off models.
  • The CLA will be launched in America as an EV, although a hybrid model will follow later.

Subaru stormed the New York Auto Show with a marshmallow and the Wagon Queen Family Truckster, but they shockingly didn’t have the ugliest car in the Big Apple. Quite the opposite as that honor went to this CLA art car, which was unveiled at Mercedes-Benz of Manhattan.

The first in a “Class of Creators” series, the car was made in collaboration with Ice Spice, who is an American rapper that is younger than the Spice Girls. While that probably just aged a lot of us, the four-time Grammy-nominated artist unveiled a “molten chrome” CLA with a diamond-encrusted Princess chain.

More: Starry But Soulless 2026 Mercedes CLA Leans On AI And Electric Power

The resulting design makes the starry, but soulless CLA look like it’s melting on a hot summer day. However, the changes don’t stop there as the art car has been equipped with slanted wheels as well as tires covered in faux jewels. They’re joined by metallic flourishes and a familiar grille with a unique surround.

While the art car looks more trash than cash, four more are on the horizon. A Gustaf Westman version will be unveiled on May 22, while KidSuper will unveil theirs on June 28. They’ll be followed by art cars from Hot Wheels and League of Legends.

Meanwhile, the Real 2026 CLA Quietly Debuts

\\\\\\\\\\

Mercedes also staged the U.S. debut of the 2026 CLA in New York, although they barely talked about it. However, the European model debuted earlier this year with a streamlined design and a minimalist interior that can be equipped with an MBUX Superscreen. It consists of a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14-inch infotainment system, and a 14-inch front passenger display. These run the new Mercedes-Benz Operating System, which embraces AI as well as Google and Microsoft.

The CLA will be launched as an EV and Americans can expect two different options. The CLA 250+ with EQ Technology has a rear-mounted motor developing 268 hp (200 kW / 272 PS) and 247 lb-ft (335 Nm) of torque. It enables the model to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in approximately 6.6 seconds, hit a limited top speed of 130 mph (209 km/h), and have a WLTP range of 431-492 miles (694-792 km).

\\\\\\\\\\\\\

The CLA 350 4MATIC with EQ Technology is a notable upgrade as it has a dual-motor all-wheel drive system producing a combined output of 349 hp (260 kW / 354 PS) and 380 lb-ft (515 Nm) of torque. Thanks to the extra oomph and traction, 60 mph (96 km/h) comes in 4.8 seconds while the top speed remains unchanged. However, the range drops to 418-479 miles (672-771 km).

A Hybrid Option Is Coming Too

Mercedes also confirmed the U.S. will get a CLA with a 48-volt hybrid powertrain. Little is known about it, but the company has previously said it will have a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine, a 1.3 kWh battery, and an electric motor that is integrated into an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The hybrid is expected to be offered with two different outputs as well as front- and all-wheel drive – at least in Europe.
