Chevy Badge More Than Doubles This Chinese EVs Price

  • The Chevrolet Spark EUV is a small fully electric SUV for South America.
  • The model is essentially a rebadged version of China’s Baojun Yep Plus.
  • It shares the same specifications, but has a much higher starting price.

Update: Chevrolet has opened pre-sales for the Spark EUV in Brazil, pricing the electric vehicle at R$159,990 (approximately $28,600). That’s more than twice the cost of the identical Baojun Yep Plus sold in China. The original story continues below.

Chevrolet has found a clever (read: cost-effective) way to make the most of its SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture by rebadging one of China’s most charming EVs, the Baojun Yep Plus. This fully electric urban SUV made an unexpected debut during a special event celebrating Chevrolet’s 100th anniversary in the Brazilian market.

The new model, set to be sold in Brazil as the Chevrolet Spark EUV, is essentially a Baojun Yep Plus with a Chevy badge stuck on the grille—no other major changes to speak of. Despite sharing a name and compact proportions, the Spark EUV has absolutely nothing in common with the Spark EV, Chevrolet’s short-lived electric hatchback sold in select states in the US from 2013 to 2017 before being phased out for the Bolt.

Inside, the Spark EUV borrows the modern digital cockpit of the Baojun Yep Plus, comprising a 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a free-standing 12.8-inch touchscreen. It is also expected to inherit the advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) of the Chinese twin, developed by none other than drone-maker DJI.

The EV measures 3,996 mm (157.3 inches) long with a 2,560 mm (100.8 inches) wheelbase, making it Chevrolet’s smallest offering. While the Baojun lineup includes a five-door version, a three-door variant, and even a pickup concept, it’s unclear if GM plans to bring any of these alternative body styles to the Brazilian market.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
\\\\\\\\\

Predictably, the Spark EUV borrows its electric powertrain directly from the Chinese-spec twin. A single rear-mounted electric motor generates 101 hp (75 kW / 102 PS) and 180 Nm (133 lb-ft) of torque. The 42 kWh battery pack offers a respectable 401 km (249 miles) of range on China’s CLTC cycle. The Baojun Yep Plus is also available with 32 kWh and 54 kWh battery options, but we don’t know if those will be eventually offered in the Chevy.

One would think that the most compelling aspect of this tiny off-roader is its affordability. Still, the Chevrolet Spark EUV starts at R$159,990 ($28,600) in Brazil, which is more than double the ¥93,800 ($13,000) price of the identical Baojun model. The little Chevy is also more expensive than the rival BYD Dolphin Mini (Seagull EV) which starts at R$115,800 ($20,700) in the same market.

Deliveries of the Chevrolet Spark EUV are expected to begin this summer. The model will soon joined by the larger Chevrolet Captiva EV which is based on the Wuling Starlight S from China.

AMG’s New Model Has Ferrari-Like Circular Lights

  • Mercedes is about to unveil a new performance model, rumored to be called AMG GT XX.
  • The exterior design has been shown in official teasers and leaked photos ahead of its debut.
  • Highlights include circular taillights, a pixel LED panel, and a large illuminated grille up front.

A new Mercedes-AMG is coming, and while it remains shrouded in mystery, photos of it have been leaked online, following the official teasers. Painted in a bright shade of orange, it appears to be the long-awaited electric sedan, set to rival the Porsche Taycan and the Audi e-tron GT.

The automaker first teased this new model earlier in the month, releasing an image of the hood and the roof. These looked similar with the Vision One-Eleven concept from back in 2023, which also featured a bright orange paint scheme.

Read: AMG Teases Something Wild And Orange But There’s No Rear Window In Sight

In April, a different teaser was released, showing the silhouette of a sleek four-door sedan, lending credence to the earlier spy shots of a Porsche Taycan rival. This has already been previewed by the Mercedes Vision AMG Concept from 2022, although the production version appears to have evolved in terms of styling.

The latest teasers are a lot more revealing, confirming the absence of a rear window, just like the Polestar 4 and the Avatr 12. The tail boasts six circular taillights, positioned much higher than the concept. Between them, there is a pixel LED panel similar to a Hyundai Ioniq 5, which might be configurable to display custom messages.

A set of leaked photos that surfaced online earlier today show a large grille which appears to be illuminated. The model has a sharp nose and fender-mounted LED headlights that bring to mind the SLR Stirling Moss from 2009.

The interior looks like it came straight out of a concept car, with a yoke-shaped steering wheel and a digital cockpit that looks different from other production Mercedes-AMG models. We can also see orange ambient lighting and straps instead of door handles.

The company hasn’t said when it will unveil this car, only stating that “something is stirring in the Mercedes-AMG garage.” It adds that “a new dimension is about to unfold.” However, the leaked photos suggest that the debut is imminent.

The production model is expected to be underpinned by the AMG.EV architecture, which includes an 800-volt system. Thanks to the trick axial flux electric motors, it could deliver over 1,000 hp, posing as the fully electric equivalent of the AMG GT 4-Door.

Chinese Dealers Sell Zero-Mileage Cars As Used To Cash In On Subsidies

  • More than 4 million people have applied for trade-in subsidies in China this year.
  • The Chinese government has committed to funding the program throughout 2025.
  • Some businesses are selling new cars as ‘zero-mileage used cars’ to get the subsidies.

China’s car market has been riding high, fueled by generous government subsidies. Dealers are taking advantage of this in numerous ways, including some less scrupulous ones selling zero-mileage cars as “used” to pocket trade-in subsidies meant to help consumers. Now, at least six cities and municipalities have hit the brakes on these subsidies, meaning local buyers will soon face higher costs when driving off with a new car.

The pause comes on the heels of concerns over the long-term fallout from the ongoing automotive price war sweeping through the nation.

Read: The Company That Started The EV Price War Now Says It’s Gone Too Far

In cities like Zhengzhou and Luoyang, local governments have announced a break in the program, citing the depletion of the initial round of funding from Beijing. Other cities, including Xinjiang, Chongqing, and Shenyang, to name a few, have hopped on the bandwagon, suspending a subsidy initiative that was originally meant to stimulate consumer spending during China’s ongoing economic struggles.

Reuters reports that subsidies like those in effect for the auto industry, as well as electronics and home appliances, contributed to a 6.4% growth in local retail sales for May. What’s more, data from the Ministry of Commerce reveals that through the first five months of this year, there have been more than 4 million applications for car trade-in subsidies.

Chinese Dealers Sell Zero-Mileage Cars As Used To Cash In On Subsidies

Some Are Taking Advantage Of The Subsidies

While the subsidies help make cars more affordable, the program is being abused. For example, there’s a growing trend of new cars being heavily discounted and sold as “zero-mileage used cars” to quickly shift inventory. Additionally, many dealers are describing new cars as used vehicles that can be traded in, making them eligible for the subsidies.

Local reports state that these practices are one of the reasons why the subsidies have been used up quicker than expected, prompting suspensions.

The country’s National Development and Reform Commission and Ministry of Finance say the subsidy program will continue throughout this year, although it’s not known when more funds will be released by Beijing.

Nissan Says We Made A Mistake With New Leaf’s Taillights

  • Nissan has launched the configurator for the 2026 Leaf on its American website.
  • Entry- and mid-spec trims feature different taillights compared to other grades.
  • These trims also lack the 19-inch alloy wheels and the dimming panoramic roof.

Update: Nissan informed Carscoops that “The Leaf visualizer on the NissanUSA.com consumer website initially launched with incorrect assets.” They clarified that “all trims will feature a black back panel, but the integrated holographic taillights within the black panel are only available on the Platinum+ trim. We’ve updated the story to reflect this.

In short, every 2026 Nissan Leaf trim will come with a black panel on the tailgate instead of a body-colored finish. However, the flagship Platinum+ trim is the only one to feature the expanded “3D holographic” taillights with Z-inspired LED graphics.

Original story continues below.

Nissan Says We Made A Mistake With New Leaf’s Taillights

Nissan’s third-generation Leaf is here, and it’s stirring up some interesting discussions. Gone is the humble hatchback, replaced by a more modern crossover design. However, when the configurator for the 2026 Leaf went live on Nissan’s US website, we quickly noticed something a bit puzzling: the entry- and mid-level trims are missing some of the coolest features that come standard in the flagship model.

More: Nissan Takes A Leaf From The Z For Its New Mass Market EV

For the American market, the 2026 Leaf will come in three grades: S+, SV+, and Platinum+. Of those, it’s the Platinum+ trim that gets all the love in the press photos. Think 19-inch alloy wheels, Nissan Z-inspired “3D Holographic Taillights”, and a panoramic roof that dims at the touch of a button.

Unfortunately, all these bells and whistles are exclusive to the Platinum+, leaving the other trims looking a little underwhelming by comparison.

The S+ and SV+ trims take a significant hit on the rear end design. While the Platinum+ flaunts its futuristic taillights, the lower trims settle for a more traditional, plain look with conventional LED graphics. Thankfully, all grades feature a black panel on the tailgate, which looks a lot better than a plain body-colored finish.

Wheels, Roofs, and Other Slight Disappointments

The entry-level Leaf S+ comes with 18-inch steel wheels topped off with black aero covers, while the SV+ steps up to 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels with a more futuristic design. As for the body, it looks pretty similar to the Platinum+, minus a few key differences: no LED bar between the headlights and, of course, the absence of roof rails.

\\\\\\\\
\\\\\\\\

Predictably, there are some differences in the interior design among the available grades. The entry-level S+ comes standard with dual 12.3-inch displays, while the SV+ and Platinum+ get the fancier dual 14.3-inch screens with Google Built-in.

Finally, the most expensive Leaf is fitted with the new Bose Personal Plus Audio system featuring extra speakers mounted on the front headrests. It is also the only one that gets the panoramic electrochromic roof with a dimming function.

Range And Power

As for performance, Nissan has yet to drop full specs for the US, but we know the Leaf will come in two powertrain configurations: one with a 52 kWh battery and 174 hp (130 kW / 176 PS), and another with a larger 75 kWh battery and a punchier 214 hp (160 kW / 218 PS).

Performance figures for the US-spec Leaf remain under wraps. However, the European-spec model accelerates from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 8.6 seconds and 7.6 seconds respectively, with a top speed limited to 160 km/h (99 mph). Note that all versions of the EV are fitted with an independent multi-link rear suspension.

As for the range figures, the EPA estimate for the larger 75 kWh battery is 303 miles (488 km). The more optimistic WLTP estimates in Europe are 271 miles (436 km) for the 52 kWh battery and up to 375 miles (604 km) for the 75 kWh battery. Both represent a healthy boost compared to the previous generation.

\\\\\\\\\

Market-Specific Differences

While the Leaf may be a global car, Nissan has made sure to tweak it a bit for different regions. The US-spec Leaf measures 4,405 mm (173.4 inches) long, 1,810 mm (71.3 inches) wide, and 1,557 mm (61.3 inches) tall, giving it a slight edge in length and height compared to the European version. The weight ranges between 3,955 and 4,370 pounds, depending on the configuration, which isn’t exactly featherlight, but then again, it’s an EV.

More: Here’s What’s Coming To The 2026 Nissan Rogue

Aerodynamics are another area where the US-spec Leaf takes a slight hit. With a drag coefficient of 0.26, it’s a little less slippery than its European counterpart, which boasts a more impressive 0.25 cd rating, thanks to different wheels and tires. On the plus side, the American version gets amber indicators, while the European model features a more refined metal-style rear bumper trim.

Different markets also get their own charging options. The US will see a NACS-compatible charging port, Europe sticks with the traditional CCS port, and Japan gets the familiar CHAdeMO port. However, all regions will get 150 kW DC fast charging capability for the 75 kWh battery pack, so that’s one feature we can all agree on.

When Will It Arrive?

The 2026 Nissan Leaf is expected to hit US dealers in the fall of 2025, with a gradual rollout to other markets, including Europe, Japan, and Australia. Pricing for the US market will be announced closer to that launch date.

Honda’s Cutest EV Yet Revealed Its Face And Something Strange Too

  • Honda debuted the Super EV Concept at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK.
  • The production version of the A-segment five-door hatchback is called the N-ONE e:.
  • The vehicle may debut in full at September’s IAA Mobility show in Munich, Germany.

Update: Following its appearance at Goodwood, Honda released the first teaser image of the production model, this time without any camouflage. The company also confirmed the vehicle’s name as the ‘N-ONE e:’. We’ve now learned that it’s scheduled to debut in September, likely pointing to a full unveiling at the IAA Mobility show in Munich that same month.

The cropped image reveals the familiar, charming face of a Kei-sized car, complete with expressive round LED headlamps. However, what caught our attention is that, aside from the charging port on the left side, there also appears to be a second port on the right. The function of this additional port remains unclear.

Honda’s Cutest EV Yet Revealed Its Face And Something Strange Too

The Goodwood Festival of Speed took place this past weekend, and Honda used the event to unveil an electric urban vehicle concept. Called the Super EV, the concept is a thinly veiled production model that will technically serve as a successor to the Honda e.

The automaker isn’t saying much at this point, but the study is a five-door hatchback that recalls the Nissan Cube. It features a curvaceous front bumper and a fully enclosed grille with an integrated charging port. They’re joined by circular headlights and vertical air curtains.

While Honda was tight-lipped about specifics, they said the concept was “designed to demonstrate how an A-segment model might offer fresh, fun-to-drive electric performance alongside trademark Honda usability.” They added the “small, sporty model has already carried out feasibility testing in the UK in the lead-up to the event – as part of a wider global program,” once again hinting at production.

A Lot Of Other Things To See

Besides the new EV concept, Honda staged the European premiere of the 0 SUV prototype. It was accompanied by the EV Fun and EV Urban concepts, which are an electric motorcycle and scooter.

They were joined by the new Prelude, which tackled the famous hill climb. Other notable highlights include the Honda-powered Williams FW11, the Civic Type R Ultimate Edition, and a Miimo robotic lawnmower.

The Most Powerful Opel Ever Comes With A Shocking Price Tag

  • Stellantis revealed the Opel Grandland Electric AWD with a combined output of 321 hp and 375 lb-ft.
  • The range-topping trim of the SUV features subtle styling tweaks and a unique chassis configuration.
  • The most powerful Opel doesn’t wear the GSE emblem, and is more expensive than premium rivals.

Update: Opel has just revealed the pricing for the new Grandland Electric AWD, and it comes with a bit of a shock, as the starting price is €59,990 ($69,300). That makes it the priciest offering from the otherwise mainstream German brand.

For comparison, this electric Opel is now pricier than the BMW iX2 xDrive30, which offers 308 hp (230 kW / 313 PS) for €57,400, and the €56,423.85 Mercedes EQA 350 4Matic, which delivers 288 hp (215 kW / 292 PS). It even outprices the more powerful Audi Q4 55 e-tron Sportback, which produces 335 hp (250 kW / 340 PS), leaving the Grandland Electric in a peculiar pricing position.

This places the Grandland Electric in the awkward spot of being neither a great deal nor a true premium contender, making it a tough sell.

Original story continues below.

With multiple Stellantis brands sharing similar hardware across a sea of small crossovers, if one model gets a feature, it’s usually just a matter of time before it shows up elsewhere. The latest Grandland update follows that script, adopting the familiar dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup we’ve seen elsewhere. The result? It’s now the most powerful and expensive Opel you can buy today.

The Opel Grandland Electric AWD makes 321 hp (239 kW / 325 PS) and 509 Nm (375 lb-ft) of torque, putting it on equal footing with the top versions of the Peugeot E-3008 and E-5008. A 210 hp (157 kW / 213 PS) motor handles the front axle, while the rear gets a second unit producing 111 hp (82 kW / 112 PS). Together, they deliver a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of 6.1 seconds, which is quick by family SUV standards.

More: Stellantis Turns Small SUV Into An Electric Rally Weapon

The driver has access to Eco, Normal, AWD, and Sport modes, affecting the powertrain, steering, and accelerator pedal. Furthermore, the Grandland Electric AWD comes standard with frequency selective damping technology and specific tuning for the springs, anti-roll bar, steering, and ESC. Energy is stored in the standard 73 kWh battery pack, allowing a WLTP range of 311 miles (500 km).

Design changes are subtle but functional. The all-wheel-drive Grandland gets sportier front and rear bumper inserts, said to be aerodynamically optimized, complete with carbon-style accents. It also rides on new 20-inch two-tone alloy wheels. These updates help the SUV achieve a drag coefficient of 0.278 Cd, the lowest in the Grandland range.

\\\\\\\

At the back, the chrome Grandland badge has been replaced by embossed lettering on the tailgate. Inside, Opel highlights a slightly different color palette for the ergonomic Intelli-seats, though the rest of the interior appears mostly unchanged. The model will be sold across Europe and the UK, wearing either Opel or Vauxhall branding depending on the market.

More: Stellantis Brand Teases Hot SUV With Electric Power

Strangely, Opel has decided not to give this variant the GSe badge, even though it outpaces the outgoing Grandland GSe plug-in hybrid, which made 296 hp (220 kW / 300 PS). Despite the upgraded drivetrain and handling tweaks, the new electric AWD model goes without the sport-focused label.

Premium Pricing

The Opel Grandland Electric AWD is now available to order in Europe, and the Vauxhall version is set to hit the UK this autumn. In Germany, Opel’s new flagship model starts at a hefty €59,990 ($69,300), a price that feels more fitting for a luxury SUV than a mainstream offering.

Hyundai’s New Electric Sedan Takes The Ioniq 5 N Formula Up A Notch

  • Hyundai released a new teaser of the high-performance Ioniq 6 N electric sedan.
  • It promises advanced suspension geometry and customizable drift settings.
  • The EV will make its world debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this July.

Update: Hyundai has released new details on the upcoming Ioniq 6 N, including specifics on its chassis setup and driving modes. We’ve updated our original story.

Hyundai’s electric performance lineup continues to evolve, and the Ioniq 6 N is set to raise the bar when it makes its official debut at Goodwood on July 10. Following the well-received Ioniq 5 N, which proved that an electric hot hatch can go toe-to-toe with its combustion counterparts, this new performance sedan aims to deliver sharper dynamics.

The Ioniq 6 N has been quietly progressing for some time. Its roots can be traced back to the 2022 RN22e concept, followed by sightings of camouflaged prototypes over the past few years. The first official teaser arrived in April 2025, timed with the reveal of the facelifted base model. More recent previews offer a clearer picture, highlighting the car’s sportier stance and intent.

The latest round of teasers offers a clearer glimpse of the upcoming EV, emphasizing its performance-driven design and intent. Highlights include a revised suspension setup, refinements to Hyundai’s simulated gearbox and sound system, and upgraded drift tuning for more precise control on the track.

Sharper Looks, Familiar Shape

While the Ioniq 6 N carries over the split headlight layout and sporty bumpers from the refreshed N Line model, a few key details separate it from the pack. Around back, it sports a prominent swan-neck rear wing perched above the integrated ducktail spoiler, giving the sedan a more track-ready silhouette.

More: Hyundai Teases Production-Spec N Vision 74

A closer inspection shows wider fenders front and rear, along with more aggressive bumper inserts that hint at its enhanced performance. The teaser images show the car in Hyundai N’s signature Performance Blue paint, accented by familiar red trim. Lightweight alloy wheels wrapped in sticky performance tires complete the look.

Aggressive Chassis Setup, Fake Sounds, And More Drift

While the Ioniq 6 N shares its platform with the Ioniq 5 N, Hyundai has introduced several upgrades that build on its lower ride height and more aerodynamic shape. These changes are aimed at improving handling and responsiveness, with the company highlighting a “fully redesigned suspension geometry.” Key revisions include a lowered roll center, a longer caster trail, and new electronically controlled stroke-sensing (ECS) dampers designed to better manage body movement and grip.

More: Hyundai’s New Ioniq 5 N DK Edition Proves EVs Can Shred Tires And Egos Alike

The EV will also feature updated versions of Hyundai’s N e-Shift and N Active Sound+ systems, now available across all drive modes. These enhancements are designed to replicate the feel and sound of a traditional performance car, right down to the simulated gear changes. The faux dual-clutch transmission uses a close-ratio setup, accompanied by an “N Ambient Shift Light” that signals when it’s time for the driver to make a virtual shift.

Rounding out the performance upgrades, the enhanced N Drift Optimiser introduces a wider range of settings to help drivers fine-tune the car’s behavior based on their own drifting skill level. Hyundai notes that this system is designed with track use in mind.

Hyundai hasn’t shared official powertrain specs just yet, but it’s likely the Ioniq 6 N will carry over the dual-motor setup from the Ioniq 5 N. That model delivers 601 hp (448 kW / 609 PS), with a temporary bump to 641 hp (478 kW / 650 PS) when N Grin Boost is activated. The same 84 kWh battery pack is expected to carry over as well, providing more than enough muscle to put it in direct competition with the Tesla Model 3 Performance.

Joon Park, Vice President and Head of the N Management Group, says the Ioniq 6 N is designed to deliver “the most engaging driving experience possible in an EV.”

More details are expected when the car takes to the hill at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 10.

Tesla’s First Robotaxi Caught Driving Itself Just Before June 22 Launch

  • Driverless Model Y filmed navigating public streets in Austin without anyone in the front seat.
  • Confirmed as the first public sighting of Tesla’s driverless Robotaxi program on open roads.
  • The vehicles have a remote human observer at all times to take over when needed.

Update: After a driverless Model Y was spotted in Austin earlier this week, Elon Musk said Tesla is targeting June 22 for the tentative launch of its long-awaited robotaxi network. “We are being super paranoid about safety, so the date could shift,” he noted. Musk also revealed that the first Tesla to fully drive itself from the end of the production line to a customer’s home is scheduled for June 28.

It’s also worth noting that the video we shared below, showing a black Model Y, has now been confirmed to be a prototype of the robotaxi. Musk reposted the footage on his X account, as did Ashok Elluswamy, who leads Tesla’s Autopilot team.

Tentatively, June 22.

We are being super paranoid about safety, so the date could shift.

First Tesla that drives itself from factory end of line all the way to a customer house is June 28.

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) June 11, 2025

Original story follows below.

As self-driving cars edge closer to everyday reality, one brand continues to push the boundaries in full view of the public. Tesla is probably the most talked-about car company in America. Now, among the plethora of other facets of its business, driverless cars are a piece of the puzzle.

Someone just spotted a Model Y without a driver moving around Austin, Texas. The short clip is a hint of what to expect more and more in the coming months.

More: Protesters Torch Robotaxis As Cybertruck Spins Through LA Chaos

Tesla and its CEO, Elon Musk, have both pointed to June as an important month. It’s when driverless robotaxis are set to head out onto public roads. In May, we learned that Tesla would launch the program with 10-20 cars and that they’d be geo-fenced the same way Waymo cars are. What we didn’t know for sure was when they’d first be on the road. Now, we know that day has come and gone.

An X user spotted one on June 10 and posted a video of it. The short 10-second clip doesn’t show much, but it’s more than enough to confirm that this is indeed a driverless Tesla. The car is driving off of Congress Ave and turning onto West James Street. Before doing so, it stops and allows pedestrians to cross the road. Then, once the road is clear, it continues on, and we see very clearly that nobody is in the front seat.

Could this be a particularly relaxed Tesla owner with a wild trust in Autopilot? Seems unlikely, for a few reasons. First, the car has a Robotaxi decal near the front door, clearly marking it as part of the program. Second, another Model Y is trailing it closely, probably with a Tesla employee onboard to monitor the situation. And finally, this timing aligns perfectly with what Tesla’s been saying all along that June was the target month.

— Terrapin Terpene Col (@TerrapinTerpene) June 10, 2025

Teslarati points out that Tesla is now listed on Austin’s government website as an autonomous vehicle tester in the city. Right now, the only riders are chosen by Tesla itself, by Musk says the public will get a crack at these cars before the month is over.

While recent press surrounding accidents both this year and in years past has everyone wondering how safe these cars will be, it’s nice to see that at least this interaction went smoothly. The video seems to indicate that the system Tesla is using responds appropriately in this exact situation. Still, maybe be on the lookout for these if you’re in Austin, Texas, anytime soon. That goes double for birds.

Ship Loaded With Thousands Of Cars Still Burning Days After Crew Abandons It At Sea

  • A car transporter ship was abandoned after catching fire in the Pacific.
  • Morning Midas is carrying over 3,000 cars, including 70 electric vehicles.
  • The crew of 22 was saved but they failed to bring the blaze under control.

Update 2: A massive cargo ship still smoldering off the coast of Alaska is proving just how complicated, and stubborn, at-sea fires can be. It’s been just over a week since the cargo vessel Morning Midas caught fire near Alaska. According to the latest photos released by the Coast Guard, the blaze, which appears to have started near the stern, has now ripped through multiple decks and engulfed the entire ship.

Salvage operations are slowly taking shape. The tug Gretchen Dunlap has arrived with salvage crews and begun assessing the damage, with two more vessels expected to join the operation in the next two weeks. Zodiac Maritime, the ship’s manager, has appointed Resolve Marine to lead the recovery. Meanwhile, the 600-foot car carrier continues drifting northeast at approximately 1.8 miles per hour, according to the US Coast Guard.

Aside from the total vehicle count and a general breakdown between gas-powered, electric, and hybrid models, there’s still no confirmation of which automakers had cars aboard. The vessel left China and was headed to Mexico when the fire broke out.

\\\\

Photos US Coast Guard

“The safety of the public, responders, and vessel crews operating in the area remains our top priority,” said Rear Adm. Megan Dean, commander of the Coast Guard’s Seventeenth District. “We are working closely with Zodiac Maritime to ensure a safe and effective plan to address the fire and mitigate any potential impacts to the environment.”

Update 1: The U.S. Coast Guard has provided additional details about the incident that occurred approximately 300 miles south of Adak, Alaska, on Wednesday. The exact number of vehicles aboard the 600-foot, Liberian-flagged cargo vessel, which is managed by a UK company, has been confirmed at 3,048 total vehicles. Of those, 70 are fully electric vehicles, and 681 are hybrid-electric vehicles.

The Coast Guard also reported that the status of the fire remains uncertain, though smoke is still visibly emanating from the vessel. “As the search and rescue portion of our response concludes, our crews are working closely with the vessel’s manager, Zodiac Maritime, to determine the disposition of the vessel,” said Rear Admiral Megan Dean, commander of the Coast Guard’s Seventeenth District. “We are grateful for the selfless actions of the three nearby vessels who assisted in the response and the crew of motor vessel Cosco Hellas, who helped save 22 lives.”

John Halas contributed to this story. Original article follows below.

EV sales might not have caught alight in the way automakers hoped, but news of another shipping fire reminds us that electric cars sure are combustible. The cargo ship was on its way from Asia to North America when a fire broke out forcing the crew to abandon the vessel in the middle of the Pacific ocean, leaving thousands of brand new cars onboard.

Also: The Shipping World Isn’t Ready For The Risk EVs Pose, Here’s Why

The Morning Midas departed China for Mexico on May 26, carrying roughly 3,000 vehicles, including around 800 electric cars. But eight days into its 19-day voyage, just after midnight UTC (7:00 p.m. EST) on June 3, smoke was spotted billowing from one of the decks. UK-based shipowner Zodiac Maritime, which manages the vessel, has since confirmed that the fire originated in the section of the ship carrying electric vehicles.

Firefighting Efforts Failed to Contain the Blaze

“The crew immediately initiated emergency firefighting procedures using the vessel’s onboard fire-suppression systems,” said Zodiac Maritime, the car-carrier’s manager, per Lloyd’s List. “However, despite their efforts, the situation could not be brought under control.”

After contacting the US coast guard the 22-man crew decided to abandon ship, jumping into the lifeboat, after which they were picked up by a nearby merchant ship. With the fire still burning at the time of writing the condition of the thousands of cars still onboard is unknown.

This is far from the first time a boat carrying EVs has caught fire at sea. Three years ago another ship, this one loaded with 4,000 cars, including Porsche, Bentley and Lamborghini models went up in flames in the Atlantic. Attempts were made to tow the Felicity Ace to safety but after burning for two weeks the boat capsized and sank near the Azores.

All 22 crew were also saved on that occasion, but VW Group said the Insurance company was looking at a $155 million bill to replace the lost cars. Lamborghini even restarted production of the discontinued Aventador to replace a customer’s car lost in the accident.

Some shipping companies, such as Norway’s Havila Kystruten, now refuse to carry electric vehicles, judging the risk factor too high. But with EVs set to eventually take over the car market those vehicles are going to have to get from one side of the world somehow, and shipping them is the only realistic method.

We’ll update this story as soon as more details emerge.

Jeep’s New Cherokee Has A Back End That Looks Strangely Familiar

  • Jeep’s 2026 Cherokee will enter production later this year offering a hybrid option.
  • The front end features styling cues borrowed from the upcoming electric Recon 4xe.
  • Interior spy shots show a large digital instrument cluster and touch-sensitive controls.

Update: Jeep is still playing the slow-drip teaser game with the 2026 Cherokee, aiming to build interest ahead of the full reveal expected in the coming months. This time around, we get a look at the rear three-quarters of the SUV, along with a profile shot, courtesy of a new video that shows the outgoing Cherokee transforming into the new one.

The rear end carries over the squared-off design theme from the front, with the taillights and license plate area framed by what appears to be piano black trim surrounds and inserts. There’s a hint of Land Rover Discovery in the overall shape, though the taillight assembly with its surround might also evoke the third-generation European-market Honda Accord – an unexpected comparison, but not completely off the mark.

And, in case you were holding your breath for a name change, don’t bother. Despite some rumors suggesting the brand might drop “Cherokee” in favor of a new nameplate as a mark of respect to the Cherokee Nation, the brand is sticking with the original. Looks like that debate is settled.

While the camouflaged prototypes gave us a solid idea, the official press photos reveal that the new Cherokee takes a more traditional Jeep approach, moving away from the swoopier design of its 2023 predecessor. Instead, it embraces a boxier look, with a front end that shares styling cues with the upcoming electric Recon 4xe, all while staying true to what Jeep fans expect.

“The all-new Jeep Cherokee headlines our efforts to deliver more product, innovation, choice and standard content to customers than ever before,” said Bob Broderdorf, Jeep CEO. “Jeep Cherokee will boast competitive pricing that strikes at the core of the largest vehicle segment and sits perfectly between Jeep Compass and Jeep Grand Cherokee to bolster our winning mainstream line up.”

In addition to confirming its name, Jeep revealed that the mid-size SUV will debut with a “new, efficient, and powerful hybrid propulsion option.” That said, we could see traditional internal combustion engines and, eventually, an all-electric variant joining the lineup, as the STLA-Large platform supports all types of powertrains.

Jeep’s lineup has filled out over the past couple of years with the addition of the luxury Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer and all-electric Wagoneer S, which is soon to be joined by the also-electric Recon. But potentially more important than all of them is the 2026 Cherokee, and new spy pics reveal the face and interior for the first time.

Compared with previous prototypes, this one has stripped away much of the front-end disguise, giving us a look at a grille that’s like a mashup of several other Jeep grilles. The five visible vertical grille sections (two are still hidden) are taller than the ones on the Grand Cherokee and seem to stand more proud of the body. But they also don’t have the a piece of trim above them to display the model name like the Wagoneers do.

But even if it did have a bit of trim with the name on, what would it say? We’re calling this SUV the Cherokee because it’s effectively a replacement for the Cherokee that bowed out in 2023, and will nestle below the Grand Cherokee in the Jeep lineup. But some reports say Jeep will move away from the name it’s used for decades as a mark of respect Cherokee Nation.

Whatever it’s called, this new Cherokee’s dashboard design has more in common with the Wagoneer S EV than it does the existing Grand Cherokee. These first ever interior pics of the Ford Bronco Sport rival show a large digital instrument cluster and a central touchscreen that’s mounted at an angle, just above a bank of touch-sensitive buttons for the climate control.

It’s good to see drivers won’t have to dive into the infotainment to change the temperature, and the switches do look great, but physical push-buttons would be even better. Further down the console is what looks like a rotary controller for the transmission and a toggle to move between the driver modes. The passenger side of this prototype is covered with cloth disguise but it’s possible Jeep could offer a third screen above the glovebox, as it does on the Wagoneer S.

Housed between the shock towers of Stellantis STLA Large platform you’ll find the Cherokee’s first ever hybrid powertrain options, and later, an all-electric variant. Leaked documents suggest production is scheduled to begin this fall for the 2026 model year and we’re sure to find out more – including the name – in the months leading up to that debut.

Hyundai’s New Electric SUV Skips Physical Buttons Nearly Entirely For Massive Screen

  • The Elexio is the first EV developed in China by the Beijing Hyundai joint venture.
  • Interior design follows a minimalist style unlike Hyundai’s global Ioniq models.
  • Built on the E-GMP architecture, the SUV promises a 435-mile (700 km) range.

Update: Following the release of exterior photos for the new Elexio, Hyundai and its Chinese joint venture partner BAIC have now revealed the first images of the electric SUV’s interior. The centerpiece is a massive 27-inch dual-screen display with 4K resolution that extends from the left edge of the center console all the way to the front of the passenger seat.

Interestingly, in addition to the expansive main display, there’s a smaller screen positioned directly in front of the driver, dedicated to instrument cluster functions. It’s an interesting choice, and it remains to be seen whether Hyundai plans to bring this layout to models outside the Chinese market.

Compared to Hyundai’s international Ioniq series models, the dashboard and overall interior design take a more minimalist approach. The dash is free of physical controls, aside from those integrated into the three-spoke steering wheel. A prominent stalk at the base of the wheel appears to handle transmission functions.

At this point, it feels like Hyundai releases a new electric model every few weeks. But don’t worry, this one’s actually a little different. Meet the fully electric Elexio, a new SUV developed specifically for the Chinese market. It’s the latest creation from Beijing Hyundai, the joint venture with BAIC Motor, and it promises to deliver the latest tech and over 700 km (435 miles) of range on a single charge.

The SUV, which ditches the familiar Ioniq branding for a fresh name, made its debut at a special event in Shanghai. Hyundai plans to reveal the technical specifications at a later date. While the vehicle’s dimensions haven’t been disclosed yet, it seems to have a more compact footprint compared to the Hyundai Ioniq 9 available in other markets including North America.

Interestingly, the Elexio adopts a new design language that sets it apart from the Ioniq lineup. The front end features a grille-less look with sporty bumper intakes, complemented by a full-width LED bar below the horizontally mounted headlights.

The profile stands out with sculpted fenders and a dark-finished D-pillar, which is visually connected to the rear spoiler. At the rear, the Elexio boasts high-mounted full-width LEDs, bold lettering, and some graphic elements on the bumper.

While Hyundai didn’t show any photos of the interior, they teased an “intelligent interface” with no physical buttons, alongside a new digital instrument cluster. The infotainment system will run on the Qualcomm SA8295 chip, delivering the latest connectivity features.

Inside, the design is said to focus on simplicity, with plenty of storage compartments. As for safety, the Elexio will be equipped with a range of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), offering Level 2+ autonomous driving capabilities.

Powertrain and Range

The new SUV rides on the E-GMP architecture, which already underpins numerous electric models from Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis. While the company didn’t share any details about the number of electric motors or their output, we do know that the platform is compatible with single- and dual-motor setups.

A battery of yet-to-be-revealed capacity is expected to provide over 700 km (435 miles) of range under normal conditions, though this figure is likely based on the Chinese CTLC testing protocols. The battery will also feature rapid charging, able to go from 30-80% in just 27 minutes. It’s housed in a reinforced structure that meets the crash safety standards.

Manufacturing and Future Plans

The new Elexio will be manufactured in China by Beijing Hyundai, with a local market launch expected in the coming months. Whether it will be offered outside China has not yet been confirmed.

Earlier this year, Hyundai announced a $1.1 billion investment in its joint venture with BAIC. This move aims to deliver electrified products tailored to the needs of Chinese customers while boosting exports. With declining sales in China due to intense local competition, Hyundai is hoping vehicles like the Elexio will help restore its foothold in the world’s largest automotive market.

Chevrolet’s Latest Electric SUV Has A Secret Chinese Twin

  • The Captiva EV is based on the Chinese Wuling Starlight S but carries Chevy’s badge.
  • General Motors plans to launch the EV in Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East.
  • Expect similar specs to the Wuling Starlight S, including a 317-mile driving range.

Update: Chevrolet has released new photos of the Captiva EV in Brazil, which have been added to the gallery below.

Chevrolet is expanding its electric vehicle portfolio in more markets around the world, and its latest addition is a familiar nameplate with a new powertrain. The Captiva returns, this time as an EV, but don’t expect to see it on American roads. Instead, the new model is headed to regions like Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa.

The Captiva name was first used in the mid-2000s for a compact SUV sold in certain markets like Europe, Australia, New Zealand, as well as parts of South East Asia, where it was also branded as the Daewoo Winstorm. After the original model was axed, GM revived the Captiva with a new version based on the Baojun 530, a Chinese model. Now, the Captiva has gone full electric, and it’s based on another Chinese offering.

The model in question is the Wuling Starlight S (also known as the Xing Guang S), which is currently sold in China. Recent social media posts from General Motors in Brazil reveal that much of the Wuling’s design has been carried over to the Chevy, though it’s been tweaked just enough to better fit the Bowtie badge.

At the front, the Captiva EV sports narrow LEDs and turn signals, with the main headlamps placed lower down on the fascia. Despite being an electric vehicle, it still has a large black grille, a departure from the grille-free designs we’re used to seeing in more modern EVs. The rear end, however, is almost identical to the Wuling model, with the same taillights, tailgate, and black bumper.

The Captiva EV will be sold in markets like Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa, regions where its compact size and affordability are expected to hit the mark. Needless to say, the US remains firmly out of the picture.

Technical specifications for the new model have yet to be announced. However, we know that the all-electric version of the Starlight S has a claimed driving range of up to 317 miles (510 km) and can reach 62 mph (100 km/h) in 7.7 seconds. Similar specs can be expected for the Captiva EV, including the ability for the battery to be charged from 30-80% in 20 minutes.

Chevrolet said that the Captiva EV is currenting going through the final stages of homologations in the country, including “extensive series of tests and validations”. Pricing will be announced at a later date, but the official website has a form where prospective buyers can declare their interest and sign up for updates.
