2025 Subaru Solterra Gets $6,500 Price Cut And New Onyx Edition

  • Subaru has slashed Solterra pricing from $44,995 to $38,495.
  • The 2025 Solterra gains a new Onyx Edition, which features black accents.
  • The electric crossover will arrive at U.S. dealerships early next year.

Subaru has introduced the 2025 Solterra and announced pricing will start at $38,495 before a $1,420 destination fee. That’s a $6,500 drop, but the delivery fee climbs $75.

Thanks to the change, the Solterra Premium costs less than the Toyota bZ4X XLE AWD. That model begins at $39,150 and has a $1,395 destination fee that brings the combined price to $40,545.

Pricing aside, the 2025 Solterra gains a new Onyx Edition. It costs $45,495 and is based on the range-topping Touring trim.

As the name suggests, the model echoes the bZ4X Nightshade Edition and features a host of dark flourishes. This includes black badging and 20-inch wheels with a black finish. They’re joined by an assortment of other black accents including the roof pillars, shoulder line trim, door frames, and rear spoiler. Buyers will also find black StarTex upholstery and black door trim.

\\\\

All Solterras are equipped with a 72.8 kWh battery pack, which powers a dual-motor all-wheel drive system producing a combined output of 215 hp (160 kW / 218 PS) and 249 lb-ft (337 Nm) of torque. The Premium trim has an EPA-estimated range of 227 miles (365 km), while higher-end variants are limited to 222 miles (357 km) due, in part, to their larger 20-inch wheels.

Speaking of equipment, the Solterra Premium has LED headlights and 18-inch wheels. Customers will also find a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. Rounding out the highlights are a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, and a dual-zone automatic climate control system.

Since EVs aren’t ideal for long distance trips, customers who purchase or lease a new Solterra gain access to the Subaru Just Drive Rental program. Participating Subaru dealers will provide a free car for up to ten days, so you can get something gas-powered for your family vacation.

Electric Jeep Wagoneer S Already Getting Dealer Discounts Of Up To $3,000

  • Some Jeep dealers are already offering discounts of up to $3,000 on the Launch Edition.
  • EPA ratings show the Wagoneer S achieves 303 miles of range with standard Falken tires.
  • Launching early next year, the electric SUV starts at $70,200 before a $1,795 destination fee.

The Dodge Charger Daytona isn’t the only EV getting discounted ahead of launch as Jeep dealers are in a similar boat. They’re gearing up to release the performance-focused Wagoneer S, which starts at $70,200 before a $1,795 destination charge.

That’s an astronomical price tag and we’ve previously noted the 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT starts at $54,995 and has a $1,995 destination fee. Despite being significantly cheaper, the electric pony car can be equipped with a $995 performance upgrade that makes it faster than its rival.

While the models target different consumers, the Jeep looks like a tough sell. Some dealers appear to be acknowledging that as they’re already offering discounts on the EV.

Performance Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram of Delaware, Ohio is advertising two Wagoneer S Launch Editions with a $1,000 discount. This lowers their price tag to $70,995 and $71,590.

Electric Jeep Wagoneer S Already Getting Dealer Discounts Of Up To $3,000

Over in Minnesota, Bloomington Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram has a $3,000 discount on their Launch Editions. This means they have prices between $68,995 and $69,590.

This is the exact opposite of what you’d expect at launch and the discounts could hint at lackluster demand. Of course, there are only a few examples listed at this point so it’s hard to draw any definitive conclusions.

However, this appears to be a trend at Stellantis as a handful of Dodge dealers are already discounting the Charger Daytona. As we reported last week, one dealer was offering their car for $3,713 under MSRP.

Electric Jeep Wagoneer S Already Getting Dealer Discounts Of Up To $3,000

While the situation could change when dealers take delivery, the Wagoneer S is based on the STLA Large platform and features a 100.5 kWh battery pack. It feeds a dual-motor all-wheel drive system developing 600 hp (447 kW / 608 PS) and 617 lb-ft (836 Nm) of torque. This enables the model to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 3.4 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 124 mph (200 km/h).

It’s also worth noting the EPA has quietly released ratings for the Wagoneer S. With Falken tires, the crossover has 303 miles (488 km) of range. That drops to 270 miles (435 km) with Pirelli tires, which will apparently be optional in the future. That’s a significant difference and it’s likely a case of performance rubber versus low-rolling resistance tires.

Skoda Refreshing Popular Enyaq EV With New Looks, More Range

  • Skoda has revealed the first sketches of the facelifted Enyaq and Enyaq Coupe.
  • The updated EVs will arrive next year with a new Modern Solid design and Tech-Deck Face.
  • The VW Group carmaker said we can expect more range thanks to improved aerodynamics.

Spy photographers caught the facelifted Skoda Enyaq earlier this year, and now we’re getting an official glimpse at the updated EV with the release of its first teaser. It features a new Modern Solid design inspired by the Elroq, which debuted earlier this year, and will be available in two body styles.

The biggest changes occur up front as an illuminated Tech‑Deck Face replaces the traditional grille. The crossover also adopts split lighting units as well as an evolutionary bumper.

More: 2025 Skoda Enyaq Puts On A New Modern Solid Face

Designers didn’t stop there as the hood now wears “Skoda” lettering instead of a badge. Other highlights include dark chrome accents and an Enyaq-exclusive Olibo Green color.

The rear end appears to carryover, but prototypes have been spotted with a disguised tush. This suggests we can expect a handful of changes that will likely include new taillights and a modified bumper.

Skoda Refreshing Popular Enyaq EV With New Looks, More Range

Regardless of what happens out back, Skoda said both models will benefit from improved aerodynamics. This promises to increase range, although the automaker declined to mention if there will be any powertrain updates.

If there aren’t any changes, we can expect an entry-level Enyaq 60 with a 62 kWh battery pack as well as a rear-mounted motor developing 177 hp (132 kW / 179 PS) and 229 lb-ft (310 Nm) of torque. This setup enables the crossover to have a WLTP range of 249 miles (401 km).

Skoda Refreshing Popular Enyaq EV With New Looks, More Range

The Enyaq 85 has a larger 82 kWh battery as well as a more powerful motor producing 282 hp (210 kW / 286 PS) and 402 lb-ft (545 Nm) of torque. This increases the range to 352 miles (566 km), while also lowering the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) time to 6.7 seconds.

Buyers can also choose between two all-wheel drive variants. The Enyaq 85x has 282 hp (210 kW / 286 PS) and a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) time of 6.6 seconds, while the Enyaq vRS packs 335 hp (250 kW / 340 PS) and takes 5.5 seconds to hit 62 mph (100 km/h).

2025 Toyota bZ4X Gets $6,000 Price Cut, New Nightshade Edition

  • Toyota has announced the 2025 bZ4X will start at $37,070, which is $6,000 less than its predecessor.
  • The reduction comes shortly after Lexus dropped RZ pricing by more than $11,000.
  • Limited gains additional equipment, while there’s a new Nightshade Edition based on the XLE AWD.

Lexus recently slashed the price of the 2025 RZ to $43,975 which meant it was $490 cheaper than the 2024 Toyota bZ4X. The mainstream brand is now addressing that discrepancy by cutting the cost of entry to $37,070 before a $1,395 destination and handling fee.

That’s $6,000 less than last year’s model, but the crossover still costs significantly more than the Chevrolet Equinox EV, which starts at $33,600 and has an EPA-estimated range of 319 miles (513 km). That compares to a mere 252 miles (406 km) for the most efficient version of the bZ4X.

More: 2025 Toyota bZ4X Gets $10,000 Lease Discount And 0% APR Before It Even Hits Dealers

The range-topping Limited trim starts at $41,800 for a reduction of $5,380. While the price cut isn’t as drastic as on the XLE, buyers will find three new driver assistance systems. They include Front Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane Change Assist, and Traffic Jam Assist. The latter system is the most notable as it allows for hands-free operation at speeds under 25 mph (40 km/h) on controlled access freeways.

The other big change for 2025 is a new Nightshade Edition. It starts at $40,420 and is based on the XLE with all-wheel drive.

The model has black badging, black door handles, a black spoiler, and 20-inch wheels with a black finish. Buyers will also find a leather-wrapped steering wheel as well as SofTex and fabric-trimmed seats with red contrast stitching.

The 2025 bZ4X is slated to arrive at dealerships early next year and customers will find a familiar powertrain lineup. Front-wheel drive variants have a 71.4 kWh battery pack that powers a 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS) electric motor. All-wheel drive models have a slightly larger 72.8 kWh battery and a dual-motor setup producing a combined output of 214 hp (160 kW / 217 PS).

Trump Could Rollback Fuel Economy Standards, Slash Support For EVs

  • President Trump’s transition team is reportedly eyeing several different ways to cut support for electric vehicles.
  • Their plan calls for eliminating the $7,500 federal tax credit, clawing back funding for charging stations, and axing federal purchasing requirements.
  • The Trump administration could also rollback fuel economy and emission standards to 2019 levels.

President Trump is slated to return to the White House next month and new details are starting to emerge about his plan to cut support for electric vehicles. This will reportedly be a multipronged attack as the incoming administration is reportedly aiming to eliminate the $7,500 federal tax credit as well as funding for improving America’s charging infrastructure.

According to a document seen by Reuters, Trump’s transition team is also recommending imposing tariffs on battery materials. The goal is to increase U.S. production, although the administration is expected to negotiate “individual exemptions with allies.”

More: Trump Reportedly Wants To Kill $7,500 EV Tax Credit And Tesla Might Be Cool With It

The Trump administration is also expected to redirect funds designed to support electric vehicle adoption. Specifics are murky, but the money could flow towards other electrification efforts focused on “national defense supply chain and critical infrastructure.” This effort seeks to boost U.S. production of batteries and the critical materials used to make them.

Speaking of national defense, the document reportedly mentioned ending Department of Defense efforts to acquire electric military vehicles. There’s also a wider push that would reverse a Biden administration requirement that federal agencies buy zero-emission vehicles.

Trump Could Rollback Fuel Economy Standards, Slash Support For EVs

Besides eroding federal support for EVs, the transition team is reportedly recommending a plan to rollback fuel economy and emission standards to 2019 levels. Reuters said this would allow for “an average of about 25% more emissions per vehicle mile than the current 2025 limits and average fuel economy to be about 15% lower.” Unsurprisingly, the incoming administration also wants to neutralize California’s emissions wavier.

These would be drastic changes, but they’re simply proposals at this point. Some of them sound easier to enact than others, but only time will tell how everything pans out.

It’s also worth noting the Biden administration is in a mad dash to get money out the door before Trump takes office. Earlier today, the Department of Energy’s Loan Programs Office announced Ford’s BlueOval SK is getting a loan of up to $9.63 billion to build three battery plants – one in Tennessee and two in Kentucky – that will have the capacity to build more than 120 gigawatt hours of batteries annually.

This follows last week’s announcement that the Loan Programs Office had finalized a $1.25 billion loan guarantee to EVgo. It aims to support the deployment of approximately 7,500 chargers at roughly 1,100 stations across the United States.

Get Ready For Mercedes’ Vision Of A Luxury Electric Van

  • Mercedes has released the first teasers of a new van concept that will debut next spring.
  • It rides on the VAN.EA platform and previews the next-generation Vito and V-Class.
  • The production vans will arrive in 2026 and offer a range in excess of 311 miles.

Mercedes Benz-Vans has teased a new concept that previews the next-generation V-Class and Vito. It will debut in the spring of 2025 as a “luxurious, highly elegant, and spacious” vision of the future.

The company isn’t saying much else at this point, but the teasers show a stylish van that trades boxy looks for a curvaceous aesthetic. Details are hard to make out, but we can see a prominent hood ornament as well as a revamped greenhouse that eschews hard lines.

They’re joined by a sloping roof and a heavily stylized body. We can also see metallic accents as well as ornate lighting units.

Little else is known about the concept at this point, but the model will ride on the new Van Electric Architecture known as VAN.EA. It’s modular and scalable, which will allow “clear differentiation between privately positioned vans in the luxury segment and commercial vans in the premium segment.”

The luxury segment is getting more attention this time around and the company said we can expect high-quality family vans, exclusive VIP shuttles, and “spacious limousines catering to the expectations of highly sophisticated customers.” In effect, it sounds like the company wants to grab a slice of the executive van segment, which has been dominated by aftermarket companies.

The redesigned vans are scheduled to arrive in 2026 and Mercedes has previously said they’ll offer front- and all-wheel drive as well as an 800 volt electrical architecture. They’ll also have a 22 kW AC charger and the latest version of the Mercedes‑Benz Operating System.

Some versions will have ranges “well over” 311 miles (500 km) and a Level 2 semi-autonomous driving system. A Level 3 system is slated to arrive before the end of the decade, while commercial vans will offer a Level 4 system for robotaxi use.

2026 Mercedes CLA Reveals Its Streamlined Body Ahead Of Impending Debut

  • The new-gen 2026 Mercedes CLA has been spied wearing less camouflage than ever before.
  • The four-door coupe adopts a streamlined design, but sports an awkward greenhouse.
  • It will be offered with hybrid and electric powertrains as well as front-, rear-, and all-wheel drive.

The redesigned Mercedes CLA has been a familiar sight for the past 22 months, but the model is finally entering the homestretch. It’s now celebrating by stripping down and showing some skin.

While the front and rear ends are heavily camouflaged, the latest prototype has an exposed body. It’s immediately familiar, but incorporates some cues from the EQE and EQS.

More: Mercedes Details New CLA’s Two EV And Three Hybrid Powertrains

The changes are readily apparent as we can see streamlined bodywork as well as flush-mounted door handles. The greenhouse has also been completely revamped and it’s an awkward mess as the third quarter glass extends into the rear door. As a result, there’s mismatched lines and an unappealing mix of shapes.

At the ends, there are star-infused lighting units which have become a hallmark of the modern Mercedes. They’re joined by an evolutionary single bar grille and new bumpers.

The redesigned CLA will debut next year and ride on the new Mercedes Modular Architecture. The company has revealed quite a bit in recent months and has previously confirmed an electric variant with a rear-mounted motor producing 268 hp (200 kW / 272 PS).

2026 Mercedes CLA Reveals Its Streamlined Body Ahead Of Impending Debut

Customers can also opt for a 4Matic variant, which adds a 107 hp (80 kW / 109 PS) motor up front. It only has a ‘boost’ capability as the motor engages when extra power or traction is needed.

We’ll learn more about the electric powertrain closer to launch, but Mercedes has already confirmed the CLA has an 800-volt electrical architecture as well as a DC fast charging capability of up to 320 kW. The company also has plans to offer an optional 85 kWh silicon oxide battery.

If you’re not sold on the electric revolution, you can look forward to a new family of four-cylinder petrol engines. Americans will get a hybridized powertrain that consists of a 1.5-liter engine, a small battery, and an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with an integrated electric motor. The engine produces 188 hp (140 kW / 190 PS), while the motor contributes an additional 27 hp (20 kW / 27 PS). Front-wheel drive comes standard, but all-wheel drive will be optional.

Dodge Dealers Already Discounting New Charger Daytona EV Under MSRP

  • Some Dodge dealers are already offering significant discounts on the Charger Daytona.
  • Set to arrive late this year, one Maryland dealer is currently offering $3,713 off a Scat Pack.
  • Most of them have cars listed at MSRP, although markups could become more common.

Dodge dealers are gearing up to launch the all-new Charger Daytona, but it appears some of them might be experiencing a lack of demand. While that remains unclear, we found a few already offering thousands of dollars in discounts.

This is the exact opposite of what you’d expect to happen with an all-new model in the market, as dealers typically add hefty markups. That’s certainly the case with the Volkswagen ID. Buzz as we recently spotted one dealer asking $35,000 over MSRP – although they’ve now dropped it down to a $20,000 markup.

More: 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona Starts At $59,595

It’s a different story over at Dodge, where Blaise Alexander Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Mansfield, Pennsylvania has a 2024 Charger Daytona R/T listed for $68,988. That’s $1,982 below the car’s sticker price of $70,970.

Maryland’s Heritage Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Parkville is being even more generous as their Charger Daytona Scat Pack carries a $3,713 discount. This lowers the price from $80,175 to $76,462.

Dodge Dealers Already Discounting New Charger Daytona EV Under MSRP

While it’s probably too early to read into things, most Charger Daytonas are being listed for MSRP. Of course, since they’re not on dealer lots yet, only a handful are showing up in inventory and it’s possible that markups may be right around the corner.

That’s what happened at Volkswagen as the company was initially able to keep a lid on markups. However, as more dealers took delivery of the van, some started adding $5,000 or more onto the price tag.

It will be interesting to see if the Charger Daytona follows a similar path, but it’s a radical departure from its predecessor. The R/T starts at $59,595 and features a dual motor all-wheel drive system with 456 hp (340 kW / 462 PS) and 404 lb-ft (547 Nm) of torque. Buyers will also find a 100.5 kWh battery that promises to deliver 317 miles (510 km) of range.

The Charger Daytona Scat Pack is even more extreme in terms of performance and price. It starts at $73,190 and has 630 hp (470 kW / 637 PS) and 627 lb-ft (849 Nm) of torque. This lowers the 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) time from 4.7 to 3.3 seconds, but the range plummets to 260 miles (418 km/h).

BMW M Teases A Hot Neue Klasse M3 EV

  • BMW M has dropped the first pictures of what appears to be a Neue Klasse EV prototype .
  • The company seemingly referred to the model as a high-performance battery electric vehicle.
  • It could have a quad-motor all-wheel drive system, similar to their i4-based prototype.

Spy photographers recently snapped the first pictures of the Neue Klasse i3 and now we’re getting a look at the M variant. Little is known about it, but BMW M quietly dropped a handful of images on Instagram and their website.

The company isn’t saying much at this point, but noted the car is a prototype and is “on the way to set new standards.” The automaker also referred to the model as the “HP BEV,” which presumably means high-performance battery electric vehicle.

More: BMW Engineers Built An Electric M2 Prototype To Impress The Board Of Management

If those weren’t enough hints, the images were accompanied by a quote from BMW M’s head of development, Dirk Häcker, who said “Electrification opens up completely new degrees of freedom for us to create M typical dynamics.”

Moving onto the pictures themselves, we can see the model follows in the footsteps of previous prototypes as well as the Vision Neue Klasse concept. However, the M prototype is more aggressive as it appears to have a wider track as well as lightweight wheels wrapped in high-performance rubber. The car also sits low, which hints at a sportier suspension setup.

BMW M Teases A Hot Neue Klasse M3 EV

There isn’t much else to see, but the car has retractable door handles and a relatively flat roof. They’re joined by a plain rear end that unsurprisingly lacks an exhaust.

While BMW isn’t saying much, the wrap echoes the one found on the i4-based quad-motor prototype that has been undergoing testing for the past few years. Rumors have suggested the model could have more than 1,000 hp (746 kW / 1,014 PS) as well as advanced torque vectoring and even a tank turn capability.

Given that BMW M has been on an electrification teaser spree as of late, we wouldn’t be surprised if more information were to follow in the coming days.

Take A Look Inside Callum’s Pint-Sized Skye EV

  • Callum has revealed the interior of the Skye EV, ahead of its impending launch.
  • The 2+2 cabin features a minimalist design with leather sport seats and a small infotainment system.
  • Pricing is slated to start around $102,000 and customers can expect a range of approximately 170 miles.

The Callum Skye continues its slow march to production as the company has revealed its minimalist interior. While it doesn’t fully escape the ‘iPad on the dash’ trend, the company’s design-focused roots are on full display.

This is clearly seen in the stylish steering wheel, which appears to be wrapped in leather and microfiber upholstery. More notably, there’s a Vitamin C loop, which is echoed by matching door pulls.

More: Callum Skye Goes Up For Order As An Exclusive And Pricey EV

Speaking of the doors, they have a two-tone design as well as a satin gun metal grey accent. Buyers will also find a “deconstructed tartan” flourish that has been digitally printed onto the leather pads.

Elsewhere, there are large analog gauges as well as a small touchscreen display that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Further below, there’s a minimalist center console that features touchscreen rotary dials, a push-button shifter, and a handful of other controls. They’re joined by two tiny cup holders and what appears to be stainless steel pedals with rubberized accents.

\\\\\\\\\\\

Callum didn’t delve into many specifics, but said the model has Bridge of Weir semi-aniline leather sport seats with contrast stitching. They’re joined by a removable rear bench, which is said to be suitable for children.

Besides revealing the production-intent interior, the latest Skye prototype has body panels made from a flax composite with bio-resin. Callum said these panels could eventually be offered as an option on the road-going model.

As a refresher, the Skye measures 159.3 inches (4,047 mm) long and features a 42 kWh battery pack, all-wheel drive, and an estimated range of 170 miles (274 km). The car is slated to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in less than four seconds as well as cost between £80,000 ($101,987) and £110,000 ($140,232).

EV Batteries May Last Up To 40% Longer Than Expected

  • A new study suggests EV batteries could last far longer than previously estimated.
  • One of the study’s authors said “We’ve not been testing EV batteries the right way” as they don’t factor in real-world driving conditions.
  • Acceleration, braking, and downtime all help batteries last longer.

Battery degradation is a serious problem, which can drastically reduce the range of older EVs or necessitate an expensive battery replacement. However, a new study by scientists at the SLAC-Stanford Battery Center suggests electric vehicle batteries could last significantly longer than previously expected.

According to Stanford’s summary, the way battery life cycles are typically calculated isn’t very good when it comes to EVs. This is because they assume a fairly constant discharge and recharge cycle, which doesn’t happen with vehicles.

More: Tesla Batteries Only Deliver 64% Of EPA Range After 3 Years, But There’s A Big Asterisk

Instead, EVs experience everything from short trips around town to long distance highway drives. There’s also stop and go traffic as well as lots of sitting around in a parking lot. Charging also varies as some owners might top off the battery every night, while others may wait days between sessions.

This relatively chaotic life is something that can’t easily be replicated in labs, so researchers created four discharge profiles based on driving data. With these in hand, they “tested 92 commercial lithium-ion batteries for more than two years” and found the more realistic the profile, the “higher EV life expectancy climbed.”

EV Batteries May Last Up To 40% Longer Than Expected

The study found some surprises including that sharp, short acceleration can lead to slower degradation. This is the opposite of what you’d expect to happen. Furthermore, the study showed regenerative braking and giving batteries a “rest” helps them last longer.

There are also important distinctions between time and cycles, when it comes to battery aging. Cycles are more important for EVs that are constantly in use such as taxis, buses, and delivery vans. For consumers, time is the ultimate enemy.

While you can read the full study here, researchers said automakers “could update their EV battery management software to take advantage of the new findings and to maximize battery longevity under real-world conditions.”

Porsche’s Latest EV Is A $600,000 Boat With A 536 HP Macan Turbo Powertrain

The 28.4 foot (8.67 meter) long boat has a 100 kWh battery pack that feeds a 536 hp (400 kW / 544 PS) electric motor. This enables the Fantom to hit speeds of approximately 56 mph (49 knots / 90 km/h).

At cruising speeds of 25 mph (22 knots / 41 km/h), the boat has a range of around 28 miles (45 km). That increases to around 62 miles (100 km) during “slow driving.” When it comes time to recharge, you can hit up a 270 kW DC fast charger on the way home from the lake or settle for an 11 kW AC charge from a dock.

While the Macan Turbo starts at €114,600 in Germany, the Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom is far more expensive as pricing begins at €572,934. That’s over $600,000 at current exchange rates.

Universal EV Plug & Charge Capability Inches Closer To Reality

  • A new public-private partnership has led to the development of a common framework for a universal Plug & Charge capability.
  • This means future EVs and charging stations will be able to talk to one another and seamlessly process payment information without having to worry about apps and log-ins.
  • The new capability is expected to become operational next year, although it might take some time to roll out.

The early days of electrification weren’t for the faint of heart as there were three competing standards, limited charging infrastructure, and a hodgepodge of proprietary apps and accounts. Things have changed significantly since those dark days as the industry has coalesced around the North American Charging Standard, while Plug & Charge technology has become more common.

The latter is now getting supercharged in what the government called a “shining example of public-private partnership.” The Joint Office of Energy and Transportation as well as SAE’s Electric Vehicle Public Key Infrastructure Consortium announced a new common framework for a universal Plug & Charge capability.

More: GM’s Plug & Charge Tech Aims To Make Charging As Simple As Possible

This promises to be a game changer as “vehicles, chargers and charging networks all will be able to talk to each other for the first time, advancing the industry toward a universal solution so every driver can plug in and start charging at any public station in the future.”

That would make charging far more convenient as some vehicles only support a Plug & Charge capability at certain partner stations. So, if you stopped at an unsupported station, you’d have to jump through hoops to start the charging process.

As the government explained, the new framework allows for seamless payment processing and this means drivers won’t have to juggle with multiple apps or payment methods. Users can also expect greater security and convenience as well as the possibility for “transformative innovations.”

The Joint Office of Energy and Transportation didn’t elaborate much on the latter but mentioned vehicle-to-grid integrations and bidirectional energy flows. While that’s not much to go on, it’s not hard to read between the lines and envision a future where utility companies could potentially use the framework to pay you for drawing energy from your vehicle.

Gabe Klein, Executive Director of the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, said “We are rapidly approaching a future where every EV driver can just plug in, charge up, and go; the network will talk to your car and process the payment seamlessly. This is a fundamental step … toward enabling bidirectional charging and true vehicle-to-grid integration, the holy grail for energy and transportation.”

Porsche 718 EV Might Be Delayed After Northvolt Bankruptcy

  • Northvolt’s bankruptcy could disrupt electric vehicle timelines, including models from Audi and Porsche.
  • A report suggests the upcoming Porsche 718 EV could be delayed by battery issues and/or a powertrain problem.
  • Audi’s PPE-based electric vehicles are also reliant on Northvolt batteries, but backup suppliers mitigate risks.

In a major setback for Europe’s push to cut reliance on Chinese battery suppliers, Swedish battery maker Northvolt filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US last month. The move is aimed at restructuring its debt and securing new funding. While the process is expected to be completed by early next year, the company has said it will be business as usual for the time being.

Behind the scenes, however, Handelsblatt is reporting that several automakers may have to delay future models due to problems at Northvolt. The upcoming all-electric Porsche 718 replacement is rumored to be one of the victims and it might miss its intended launch of late next year.

When reached for comment, a spokesperson declined to confirm or deny the rumor. Instead, they told the publication they can’t comment on supplier issues.

While Porsche is staying tight-lipped, it appears the company is heavily dependent on Northvolt batteries and their high energy density. This is important for sports cars as they’ll enable weight savings through the use of smaller battery packs.

Interestingly, it appears the electric 718 is also facing other issues. In particular, an unknown “component in the drivetrain” is said to be causing problems and this, alone, could also result in a delay.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Porsche isn’t the only one that could be impacted as Audi also has a deal with Northvolt. Their batteries will be used to power models based on the PPE platform including the A6 e-tron.

However, Audi is also sourcing batteries from CATL and LG. This means the situation isn’t critical and the A6 e-tron wasn’t even slated to use Northvolt batteries until later. That’s fortunate as it means the company might be able to secure a new contract with another supplier, if needed.

A lot of the blame is being placed on Northvolt founder Peter Carlsson, who ‘stepped aside’ as CEO following the bankruptcy. Rumors suggest he brought the “worst parts of Tesla’s corporate culture” to his new job and this resulted in “unrealistic schedules” as well as “overambitious goals.” That led to problems and BMW pulling out of a multi-billion dollar contract.

It remains to be seen how everything will shake out, but European automakers are understandably nervous.

Holy Roller: Pope Francis Gets New Mercedes G-Class EV Popemobile

  • Mercedes has delivered a new Popemobile to the Vatican, based on the G 580 with EQ.
  • It features a quad-motor all-wheel drive system that was adapted for low-speed travel.
  • The Popemobile has an open air design as well as a prominent seat for the pontiff.

Pope Francis has received an early Christmas present as Mercedes has delivered a new Popemobile based on the G 580 with EQ technology. It will become the latest in a long line of G-Class based Popemobiles, which have been used by Popes  John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis.

The one-off model was developed in close cooperation with the Vatican and features a pearl white exterior as well as an open top design. This required extensive modifications and Mercedes said the left rear door was removed, rebuilt, and “seamlessly welded into the bodyshell.” The right rear door remains, but has been completely revamped and now opens suicide-style.

Using that door will take you to an elevated platform, which features a centrally positioned swiveling seat that is height-adjustable. It looks more like a piece of furniture than a car seat and Mercedes said it enables the Pope to “move around flexibly” as well as address audiences from different angles.

Besides the fancy papal chair, there are two jump-style seats located behind it. The G-Class also has rear steps as well as rear platforms for security personnel. If bad weather is in the forecast, the electric Geländewagen can be outfitted with a hardtop that provides a smidge of protection.

Mercedes was coy on performance details, but revealed the quad-motor all-wheel drive system has been “adapted to the particularly low-speeds required for public appearances.” That’s not much to go on, but the standard model has a 116 kWh battery pack as well as a combined output of 579 hp (432 kW / 587 PS) and 859 lb-ft (1,163 Nm) of torque. This enables the SUV to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 4.6 seconds, hit a top speed of 112 mph (180 km/h), and have an EPA-estimated range of 239 miles (385 km).

While this is the latest G-Class based Popemobile, Mercedes has been supplying cars to the Vatican for nearly 100 years. The first was a Nürburg 460 Pullman for Pope Pius XI, which was delivered in 1930.

2026 BMW iX Facelift Teased With 10% Greater Efficiency And New Grille

  • BMW has released official pictures of a 2026 iX prototype ahead of its launch next year.
  • The facelifted EV features an evolutionary design and adopts a new grille with angular lines.
  • The biggest upgrades are hidden, with more efficient electric motors and improved efficiency.

Spy photographers have caught the facelifted BMW iX on multiple occasions, but the automaker is giving them a break by releasing official pictures of the updated EV. They reveal a handful of changes, but this isn’t a radical makeover.

Starting up front, there’s a lightly revised grille that adopts angular lines similar to the new X3. We can also see an evolutionary front fascia with a prominent intake that is flanked by vertical air curtains. They’re joined by a familiar hood and updated headlights.

More: 2026 BMW iX Gets Glowing Grille And More Power, But No Prettier

The rest of the design largely carries over, but some minor tweaks could be hiding beneath the camouflage. We can also expect interior updates as previous spy photos have shown a camouflaged cabin.

While BMW didn’t have anything to say about the facelifted crossover, the pictures were released in conjunction with a test drive event. BMW Blog attended and said the model has new seats, which are more comfortable than their predecessors.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Some of the biggest changes are under the skin as the publication says the iX has upgraded electric motors with new bearings and inverters. These help to improve efficiency and the improvements are aided by lower rolling resistance tires.

The changes reportedly help to make the 2026 iX 10% more efficient than the outgoing model. That’s before factoring in expected battery improvements, so it sounds like we can expect a significant range boost.

That would be a welcome development as the 2025 iX xDrive50 offers an EPA-estimated range of between 302 and 309 miles (486 and 497 km) depending on the size of its wheels. Those numbers drop to 284 and 285 miles (457 and 459 km) for the range-topping iX M60.

VW ID. Buzz Markups Hit $35,000 As Greedy Dealers Run Amuck

  • Volkswagen dealers have embraced ID. Buzz markups and one is seeking $35,000 over MSRP.
  • Other dealers are asking $5,000 to $10,000 over sticker, so it pays to shop around.
  • The ID. Buzz starts at $59,995 and has 282 hp as well as 234 miles of range.

The dam has burst on ID. Buzz markups as numerous dealers are now advertising the van over MSRP. The most egregious is Volkswagen San Bernardino, which has two 1st Editions listed for $107,668. Both carry a MSRP of $72,668 and that means they have a $35,000 markup.

That’s a ridiculous number as the ID. Buzz starts at $59,995. This means the markup is 58% of the price of the van itself.

Review: The VW ID. Buzz Is The Coolest Minivan On The Block, But There’s A Catch

Unfortunately, Volkswagen San Bernardino isn’t the only rotten apple as Maryland’s King Volkswagen has added a $10,000 markup to their 1st Edition. This means they’re looking to get $81,895 instead of the MSRP of $71,895.

Illinois’ Larry Roesch Volkswagen has a slightly more modest $5,000 markup, which boosts the price of their van to $77,300. It’s a similar story at Emich Volkswagen of Boulder and Denver, which appears to have sold several vans with $5,000 markups.

VW ID. Buzz Markups Hit $35,000 As Greedy Dealers Run Amuck

One of the more interesting models up for sale is a $76,295 ID. Buzz Pro S from Napleton’s Auto Park of Urbana, Illinois. While the Pro S starts at $59,995 this one features a Mystery Machine wrap from Scooby Doo. Is it worth the price of admission? Probably not, but at least you’re getting something unique for the elevated price tag.

Volkswagen of America began ID. Buzz deliveries last month and was initially able to keep a lid on markups – or at least blatantly advertised ones. Now that more dealers have vans in stock, markups are a common sight. This is interesting to note as Volkswagen warned against them.

Speaking of which, greedy dealers are helping to prove Volkswagen’s case for Scout’s direct to consumer model. Dealers were up in arms about this, but the massive markups show they can’t be trusted.

What’s The Automotive Turkey Of 2024?

  • 2024 is almost up and it’s time to look back at this year’s turkeys.
  • There’s no shortage of options as several companies made missteps or launched underwhelming products.
  • The biggest turkey of the year might be EVs and they could be in for an even bumpier future.

It’s Thanksgiving and that means it’s turkey time. However, we’re not talking about food as we’ve seen plenty of automotive turkeys this year.

One of the biggest might have been the EV push, which has backfired by virtually all accounts. While sales of electric vehicles are indeed climbing, it’s occurring much slower than many companies had anticipated. This has resulted in firms canceling or delaying future models as well as pushing back plans to go electric-only.

If lackluster adoption wasn’t bad enough, President-elect Trump is expected to throw a wrench into the automotive industry. Besides talk of new tariffs, reports have suggested he wants to eliminate the EV tax credit. Even some Democrats have campaigned against electric vehicle mandates, suggesting the tide has turned against extensive government support.

Moving on, years of bad decisions have finally come back to haunt Stellantis. They’ve stopped the Jeep money printing machine, neglected several brands, and have flip-flopped about killing some off.

What’s The Automotive Turkey Of 2024?

These issues are being compounded by union pressures on both sides of the Atlantic. The UAW has been particularly critical, going as far as launching ShitcanCarlos.com. They’ll get their wish soon enough as Carlos Tavares is slated to retire in 2026.

On the product side, Audi decided to launch a new brand named AUDI, while recalls seem like a daily occurrence for some brands. Subaru also appears intent on destroying its last redeeming qualities as the company confirmed plans to kill the Legacy after nearly four decades. The Outback is also set to transition from a cool wagon into an ugly SUV with all the character of an old refrigerator.

While those are just a few examples, who or what do you think was the biggest turkey this year?

New Electric Mercedes GLC Shows More Skin Ahead of 2026 Launch

  • A prototype of the 2027 Mercedes GLC EV has been spotted shedding some camouflage
  • The electric crossover is slated to be launched in 2026 and ride on the MB.EA platform.
  • Styling echoes the EQE and EQS SUVs, but it appears the GLC EV will have a bit more character.

Spy photographers have caught the Mercedes GLC EV undergoing testing ahead of its launch in 2026. While the prototype is still heavily camouflaged, some of the disguise is starting to come off.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much to see up front as the prototype has a fully enclosed grille that is flanked by temporary headlights. They’re joined by a wide lower intake and a streamlined hood, which is hidden beneath bulky padding.

More: 2027 Mercedes GLC EV Spied With A New Front End

The sides show a lot more detail as we can see pronounced wheel arches with plastic body cladding. They’re joined by flush-mounted door handles and a greenhouse that mimics the EQE and EQS SUVs. However, the GLC EV has more traditional front side glass and that’s a welcome change.

Designers also gave the crossover an upward sweeping beltline and muscular rear haunches. Elsewhere, there are circular taillight graphics inspired by the Mercedes star emblem. We can also get a glimpse of a minimalist spoiler and a plain rear bumper.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Baldauf

We still haven’t gotten a good look inside, but the crossover will presumably echo newer models and feature a freestanding digital instrument cluster as well as an infotainment system with a portrait orientation.

Mercedes hasn’t said much about the GLC EV, but CEO Ola Källenius recently confirmed it will arrive in 2026 and ride on the MB.EA platform. Little is known about it, but the architecture should be more advanced than the MMA platform that will underpin entry-level models such as the redesigned CLA.

That particular car hints at the GLC’s capabilities as it offers an 800-volt electrical architecture and a 320 kW DC fast charging capability that can deliver up to 186 miles (300 km) of range in as little as ten minutes. The model also promises a WLTP range in excess of 466 miles (750 km).

While a lot of this is an apples to oranges comparison, some electric motors may carryover. As a result, it’s interesting to note the CLA will have a rear-mounted motor with up to 268 hp (200 kW / 272 PS). 4Matic variants add a front-mounted motor producing 107 hp (80 kW / 109 PS).
