Subaru Rethinks $10 Billion EV Plan As Tariffs Bite And Buyers Shift

We can now add Subaru to the growing list of carmakers easing off their all-electric investments, as shifting consumer tastes and surging demand for hybrids reshape the market. The move could see several of Subaru’s planned EVs pushed further down the timeline.

During the automaker’s most recent earnings briefing, president Atsushi Osaki blamed “increasing demand for hybrids and the reappraisal of internal combustion engines” as the reason for delaying “the timing of full-scale EV mass production investment.”

Adjusting The EV Roadmap

Subaru had committed 1.5 trillion yen, or about $9.74 billion, in electrification by 2030. It has already poured in 300 billion yen ($1.94 billion) of this amount, and while the remaining 1.2 trillion yen will still be invested, they will be “reviewed,” according to Nikkei Asia.

In the immediate term, the timeline change won’t have a significant impact, as the company still plans to launch four electric SUVs built in collaboration with Toyota by the end of 2026. However, it may delay four other EVs that it had planned to develop in-house by 2028.

Hybrid Takeover

The trend towards hybridization has been apparent over the past 18 months, prompting other car manufacturers, like Hyundai, to increase investments in this space.

Compounding this shift are economic headwinds. With the loss of the federal EV tax credit in the United States and the added burden of steep automotive tariffs, manufacturers are being forced to tighten budgets and spend more strategically.

Subaru says it expects to take a 210 billion yen ($1.36 billion) impact from the tariffs this year. For the financial year ending March 2026, it expects a net profit of 160 billion yen, a massive 53 percent decline from the year prior.

To cushion the blow, Subaru plans to trim costs by 200 billion yen ($1.29 billion) by 2030, an efficiency drive meant to steady the balance sheet as the market evolves.

The newest EV in Subaru’s portfolio is the Uncharted, a reworked and rebranded version of Toyota’s latest electric C-HR. Subaru has given it a tougher, more adventurous character, staying true to its outdoorsy image even as it reconsiders how quickly to go all-in on battery power

The EV Slowdown Just Made Toyota Change Its Mind Again

  • Toyota must begin development within three years of buying land.

For the second time this year, Toyota has delayed its plan to build a new factory dedicated to EV batteries in Japan’s Fukuoka Prefecture. The decision, while not unexpected, highlights the company’s cautious approach amid fluctuating global demand for electric vehicles.

Sales of Toyota’s EVs have slowed, yet the automaker maintains that the plant will still move forward in due course.

Toyota paid roughly 6 billion yen, about $39 million, for the site located in an industrial zone under development in northeastern Fukuoka Prefecture. As part of the purchase, the company agreed to begin construction within three years.

Earnings Results Shift The Timeline

Despite this, the car manufacturer announced in March that it would postpone work at the site due to fall demand for its EVs. The governor of Fukuoka, as well as Toyota President Koji Sato, have since confirmed work on the site has been postponed for a second time.

Production had initially been slated to start in 2028, though an updated timeline has yet to be provided, according to Nikkei Asia.

Word of the delay coincided with Toyota’s latest earnings report. It cut its global EV sales expectations by 10 percent from a previous forecast of 277,000 units for the fiscal year ending March 2026.

Even so, Toyota hasn’t ruled out adjusting its long-term targets, including its aim to reach 1.5 million global EV sales in 2026, a figure that could yet evolve as market conditions change.

Toyota Is Still Betting On EVs

Notably, Toyota is still investing heavily in new electric vehicles and factories. It continues to work towards opening a new factory in Shanghai, China, around 2027, to produce EVs for Lexus. This facility will likely handle the production of the LF-ZC and LF-ZL that were introduced a couple of years ago as concepts.

Toyota’s EV sales through the first nine months of the year were actually up 20.6 percent to 117,031 units, but even so, that number has still fallen short of expectations.

Until the company is confident that sales will rise significantly, it doesn’t make sense to rush and build new plants only for them to sit idle or operate at partial capacity.

Since the debut of the Iconic SP concept at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, Mazda enthusiasts have been waiting for the day it leaves the stand and hits the street. The coupe sparked immediate speculation about a spiritual successor to the RX-7, and top Mazda execs have been eager to keep that hope alive.

Yet, the latest reports suggest that the journey from concept to reality might not be as smooth as fans would like.

In late 2024, Mazda Design Chief Masashi Nakayama said the Iconic SP was “designed with real intent to turn it into a production model,” a goal echoed by CEO Masahiro Moro: “We still persist in making it happen.” Chief Technical Officer Ryuichi Umeshita later called it “a good successor for the RX-7,” though he admitted the project still needs a sound business case.

How Close Is It to Reality Now?

The Chief Technical Officer was candid: “Let me answer personally—that is my dream car. I want to make it real. Technology-wise, I believe it’s possible. The only outstanding issue is financial.”

Earlier this year, Mazda trimmed its planned budget for electrification by half a trillion yen ($3.3B). The company is pursuing a “Multi-Solution” strategy that blends BEV, hybrid, and combustion engines rather than going all-in on electric.

Between developing an EV-specific platform, a new hybrid setup, and the upcoming SkyActiv-Z engine, Mazda’s resources are already stretched thin. In that light, a bespoke sports car might not sit at the top of the spending list.

Rotary Revival With A Turbo

Even so, the idea hasn’t been shelved. The Vision X Coupe concept, unveiled at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, shows Mazda hasn’t turned its back on the rotary dream.

If anything, it confirms that the company is still invested in the technology that defined some of its most celebrated cars as that study is powered by a hybrid unit with a turbocharged rotary engine.

Umeshita underlined that continuity: “We have re-established the rotary engine development team, and we know that our DNA is in sports cars, so I would never say we gave it up.”

The Vision X Coupe’s plug-in hybrid setup pairs a turbocharged rotary engine with an electric motor for a combined 503 hp (375 kW / 510 PS) and includes carbon-capture technology. By contrast, the Iconic SP’s range-extender system produced 365 hp (272 kW / 370 PS).

Mazda’s next step is to cut emissions from the rotary engine further, which could eventually allow it to drive the wheels directly rather than serving solely as a generator. Engineers estimate this evolution will take another “two to three years” of development.

Will the Next MX-5 Carry the Torch?

While Mazda’s design and engineering teams work toward reviving the rotary legacy, the brand’s future in sports cars looks brighter than it has in years.

Alongside the potential RX successor, Mazda has confirmed that the next-generation MX-5 roadster will arrive later this decade. The upcoming Miata will stay true to its lightweight spirit, equipped with a larger-displacement SkyActiv Z engine and, reassuringly, a manual gearbox.

Ford CEO Warns China Could Put Every American Carmaker Out Of Business

For years, many traditional carmakers seemed content to ignore the quiet storm gathering in China’s automotive sector. The rise of new Chinese manufacturers barely registered on their radar, as if the disruption that had shaken the tech world could never reach the showroom floor.

That illusion has now been thoroughly dispelled. Most major automakers now grasp the scale of disruption these Chinese brands are set to bring to the global car market, and among the most outspoken voices acknowledging it is Ford’s chief executive, Jim Farley

Over the past year, Farley has been quite outspoken in his belief that Chinese brands have developed a significant lead in the electrification race.

How Big Is The Threat?

At one point, he was even driving a Xiaomi SU7 every day, not as a stunt but out of genuine admiration. For Farley, the challenge from China eclipses even the Japanese surge of the early 1980s.

“I think it’s exactly the same thing, but it’s on steroids,” Farley told Business Insider. “They have enough capacity in China with existing factories to serve the entire North American market, put us all out of business. Japan never had that. So, this is a completely different level of risk for our industry.”

In 1980, Japan produced over 11 million vehicles, a surge that prompted then-President Ronald Reagan to impose voluntary export limits on Japanese imports. Today, the circumstances are different but the unease feels familiar.

Chinese EVs are currently barred from sale in the United States, insulating local brands for the moment. Yet Ford, operating on a global stage, can’t rely on geography for protection.

The Chinese Tech Advantage

“[The Chinese] have far superior in-vehicle technology. Huawei and Xiaomi are in every car. You get in, you don’t have to pair your phone. Automatically, your whole digital life is mirrored in the car,” Farley added.

“We are in a global competition with China, and it’s not just EVs. If we lose this, we do not have a future Ford. The Chinese are the 700-pound gorilla in the EV industry. It is completely dominating the EV landscape globally and more and more outside of China.”

For now, Trump-era regulations, including the removal of the federal EV tax credit worth up to $7,500, have impacted demand for electric vehicles in the United States.

Still, Farley sees the slowdown as temporary. He expects EVs to hold about 5 percent of the U.S. market in the short term but believes that number will rise as lower-cost models reach production and public perception catches up with the technology.

Honda’s Racy Super-One Fakes Engine Sounds And Gear Shifts

The Super EV Concept previewed by Honda at the Goodwood Festival of Speed has morphed into this: the Super-One Prototype. Presented at the Japan Mobility Show this week, this model is a close preview of a new production model that’ll essentially serve as a successor to the Honda e.

Presented in Tokyo as the Super-One Prototype, the pint-sized electric city car will be sold across Japan, Asia, and Oceania as the Super-ONE, but sold in the UK as the Super-N.

It is based around Honda’s new N-One e: kei cars sold in Japan and has a sporty persona that’s bound to appeal to some performance car enthusiasts.

Honda hasn’t released powertrain details for the model, but says it’s equipped with a simulated seven-speed transmission and an Active Sound Control system that mimics the soundtrack of a “powerful” engine.

The virtual gear shifts and the ICE-inspired soundtrack will fire into life when the car is driven in Boost mode. Additionally, there’ll be dedicated interior displays and coordinated lighting sequences to enhance the thrill of driving.

A Sport Design to Match

It’s not just the driver-focused nature of the Super-One that makes it stand out from the old Honda e. It also has a fun exterior design. Looking more like a car that has been tweaked by an aftermarket firm for the Tokyo Auto Salon, the EV includes bulging wheel arches and sporty bumpers. It even has a small wing at the rear.

Found in the cabin are sporty seats trimmed in black, white, and grey upholstery. There’s also a small digital instrument cluster and a large central infotainment display similar to other Honda models.

The production model will hit the market next year, first launching in Japan, before being added to Honda’s UK range and in several other Asian markets.

“The Super-N Prototype promises to offer a great entry point to Honda EV ownership when it arrives in our market next year, building on the excitement we saw for the concept model at Goodwood this summer,” Honda UK head Rebecca Adamson said.

“By bringing Honda’s trademark ‘fun-to-drive’ performance to a compact all-electric model, we believe this is a unique proposition and we are excited for people to experience it from 2026.”

The SUV staring back at you here is the Honda 0 α, unveiled in a world premiere at the Japan Mobility Show and already edging toward production within the next two years.

It’s officially labeled a “prototype,” but as we’ve seen in the past, in Honda terms, that means pre-production rather than pure concept. It joins the 0 Saloon and 0 SUV that made their debut earlier this year, rounding out Honda’s latest attempt to reinvent itself for the electric age.

Honda refers to the 0 α (Alpha) as a “gateway model” for its 0 Series range of electric vehicles. The production model will hit the market in 2027 and be available in markets around the world, with a particular focus on Japan and India.

It has a very similar design to the 0 SUV, but is slightly smaller. And, just like the two other 0 Series models, it looks unlike anything in Honda’s current range.

The most obvious points of difference between the 0 α and the 0 SUV are found at the front. This smaller model rocks a set of different LED taillights and DRLs, but retains an illuminated Honda badge. The lower bumper has also been redesigned and looks slightly more aggressive with a pair of body-colored elements.

From the side, the 0 α looks almost indiscernible from the larger model. It retains the same odd shape with an incredibly high rear window and thick rear pillars.

It also has the same rocker panels, the same basic doors, and the same flush handles. The most obvious difference is that it’s slightly shorter and lacks the tiny window behind the C-pillars of the larger model.

The similarities continue at the rear. Honda has equipped the 0 α with a U-shaped LED lightbar that stretches up the tailgate. Notably, the 0 α has a larger rear window than the 0 SUV, which should improve rear visibility. A curvaceous bumper also catches the eye.

What About The Tech?

Honda has yet to release any technical specifications about the new prototype. We know that the 0 Saloon and 0 SUV will share a platform with the Afeela EV that Honda co-developed with Sony. Presumably, the 0 α will also use the same architecture.

The carmaker notes that the 0 α also adopts the same ‘Thin, Light, and Wise’ approach of the other 0 Series models. Honda has previously said this approach will lead to the creation of an “ultra-thin battery pack” and a compact e-Axle.

The thin battery pack will allow Honda to reduce the height of the floors in its EVs and boost cabin space without impacting ground clearance.

As with the other 0 Series models, the 0 α should hit the market with at least 300 miles or 483 km of range. All 0 Series models are also tipped to hit the market with Level 3 self-driving capabilities that include an eyes-off function for highway traffic jams.

We also know the 0 Saloon and 0 SUV will come standard with NACS charging ports, although it’s unclear if the 0 α will as well given that Honda hasn’t mentioned any plans to sell it in North America.

BYD Surprises Japan With A Tiny EV Ready To Take On The Kei Giants

  • BYD Racco, the brand’s first kei car, has been unveiled in Japan.
  • Features upright stance with styling inspired by Japanese rivals.
  • Expected to offer 112 miles of range and generous equipment.

BYD is preparing to make its move into one of Japan’s most tightly defined and popular vehicle segments with the Racco, a tiny EV that marks the brand’s first kei car. The pint-sized newcomer was introduced earlier today at the Japan Mobility Show as BYD’s first model designed exclusively for overseas markets.

At first glance, the Racco doesn’t stray far from established kei design cues, and that’s no surprise given the strict size and proportion rules governing the segment.

The windowline and fin-shaped pillars echo the previous-generation Mitsubishi ek Space, while the headlights and stance appear to draw inspiration from the Daihatsu Tanto.

The Racco features a short hood, upright windshield, sliding doors, flat sides, and a near-vertical rear end with almost no overhang. It has a C-shaped LED lighting signature on both ends, and rides on 15-inch alloy wheels. Furthermore, it comes fitted with disc brakes on all four wheels.

The model measures 3,395 mm (133.7 inches) long, 1,475 mm (58.1 inches) wide, and 1,800 mm (70.9 inches) long, in line with the narrow framework for kei cars.

Inside the four-seater cabin amenities include a digital cockpit with a small instrument cluster and a larger free-standing infotainment that is not usually found in the segment. We also expect a comprehensive ADAS suite and a heat pump for the A/C.

Powertrain Specs

BYD didn’t release the detailed specifications of the electric powertrain, but confirmed that the Racco will be front-wheel-drive. We also know it will be fitted with a “Blade” Lithium iron phosphate battery pack, available in two different capacities (short-range and long-range).

According to reports, the 20 kWh battery will offer around 180 km (112 miles) of WLTC range although numbers remain unconfirmed. The EV is also expected to be compatible with fast charging of up to 100 kW. The floor-mounted battery will give it a lower center of gravity compared to ICE-powered kei cars, improving handling.

BYD plans to open pre-orders for the Racco in the summer of 2026, with sales commencing shortly after. Pricing is estimated to start at around ¥2.5 million ($16,500) before subsidies, positioning it squarely against the Nissan Sakura and Mitsubishi eK X EV.

Besides the kei car, BYD has also unveiled a new light commercial vehicle designed to comply with Japanese regulations that allow it to be driven with a standard driver’s license.

The BYD T35 features a cab-over design and will be available in box van and flatbed configurations. It with fitted with a fully electric powertrain generating up to 201 hp (150 kW / 203 PS) and 340 Nm (251 lb-ft) of torque. The Blade lithium iron phosphate battery is good for a WLTC range of 250 km (155 miles).

The flatbed version is exhibited with a mobile sauna stove and cold bath chiller, both using power from the battery. The market launch of the BYD T35 in Japan is scheduled for 2026.

Sharp’s First Car Wants To Sync With Your Toaster And Fridge Too

For decades, most people have known Sharp for televisions, microwaves, and air purifiers, not for anything with wheels. Now the company seems intent on extending its home-tech comfort onto the road.

The Japanese electronics giant is deepening its move into the automotive sector, leaning on Foxconn’s R&D and manufacturing strength to get there. Its latest effort is a far more developed version of the LDK+ electric minivan concept, set to debut at the Japan Mobility Show later this month.

The latest LDK+ moves noticeably closer to a production-ready vehicle than the 2024 prototype. The proportions are now more in line with a conventional minivan, leaving behind the cab-over profile of its earlier version.

Getting Closer To The Final Product

The front end is now more pronounced, featuring full-width LED headlights integrated into a covered grille with the Sharp logo. Even so, the overall design is rather generic, despite the two-tone finish.

The minivan features sliding doors and an upright rear, while traditional mirrors and door handles hint that the concept is nearing production.

Another image offers a look inside the cabin, entered through a wide pillarless opening. The layout includes a flat floor, a swiveling driver’s seat that can face the rear, and a console box fitted with a foldable table.

A rear bench for three passengers is positioned further back, sacrificing cargo space but creating a lounge-like environment with ambient lighting.

Sharp envisions the LDK+ as an “extension of the living room” when parked. While the massive 65-inch screen of the original concept is gone, the updated model gains a projector and a retractable screen above the rear bench, transforming the cabin into a mobile theater or remote workspace.

The EV incorporates Sharp’s AIoT platform, allowing it to link with household devices such as appliances, air conditioners, and washing machines. It uses AI to learn user habits and preferences, and supports V2H functionality, solar integration, and residential battery systems.

Shared EV Platform

The Sharp LDK+ shares its underpinnings with the Foxconn Model A. The latter was unveiled in concept form last year with a highly modular interior and a configurable exterior that can be tailored for professional and personal use.

The company has yet to share the specifications of the electric powertrain or the battery pack that will likely be carried over to its Sharp sibling.

Foxconn’s own minivan is due to reach Japanese roads in early 2027, followed by a rollout across ASEAN markets.

Sharp hasn’t confirmed when or where its version will launch, though more details are expected at the Japan Mobility Show on October 30.

Every so often, an automaker decides to walk straight into the lion’s den. Chinese giant BYD is doing exactly that by taking on Japan in one of its most tightly held automotive arenas.

And it’s not with some brash performance car or luxury SUV, but with something much humbler, and far more symbolic: a kei car, the pint-sized machine that’s been a fixture of Japanese roads since the aftermath of World War II.

The company has just released a teaser for its first-ever electric kei car, designed specifically for Japan’s uniquely regulated microcar segment. The tiny EV will debut, likely in production form, later this month at the Tokyo Motor Show.

Based on the side profile, BYD’s new city car embraces the classic Kei boxy proportions. This model has short overhangs, a tall roofline, and wheels at the extreme corners to help maximize cabin space.

Spy photos circulating on Chinese social media indicate that it’ll have sliding rear doors, further boosting its practicality. Inside, it features a floating digital gauge cluster, a larger infotainment screen, and double A-pillars for better visibility.

Early indications are that the mini BYD will have a 20 kWh battery with a range somewhere around 180 km (111 miles) (WLTC). It’ll likely have a heat pump for more comfort and efficiency, and should support up to 100 kW fast charging.

Why It Matters

By American standards, those figures might seem small, but they’re appropriate for this class and size of car in Japan. Pricing is expected to start around ¥2.5 million (approximately $17,000), putting it below rivals like the Nissan Sakura and Mitsubishi eK X EV when not accounting for incentives.

BYD has already sold a few thousand cars in Japan, but this is a very different foray. It’s a car built specifically for the Japanese market. Since the Kei segment is unique to Japan, it’s dominated by domestic products.

A foreign EV contender, particularly from China, represents a major strategic step. It might be akin to BYD introducing a Cadillac Escalade contender in America (tariffs be damned) for $40,000.

The new BYD will test consumer appetite for Chinese-made cars in Japan. It’ll also shed some light on how successful BYD’s global ambitions can be. We don’t expect to see this model in other markets, and it won’t even arrive in Japan until 2026. That all said, it’s a fascinating development.

One by one, Japan’s major automakers are unveiling their lineups at the Japan Mobility Show 2025. This time, the spotlight turns to Subaru, where attention is centered on two STI-branded concepts: one fully electric and the other featuring a five-door hatchback design.

For this year’s event, the automaker has split its presentation into two distinct themes, Performance and Adventure, united under the banner “Driving the Subaru Difference”.

The STI Studies

Leading the lineup are two world premieres from STI, the Performance-E and Performance-B concepts. The Performance-E is a fully electric model described as “spearheading Subaru’s new generation”, hinting that it could evolve into a future production car – possibly an electric successor to the Levorg.

According to Subaru, the Performance-E “combines thrilling aesthetic proportions with outstanding aerodynamics and practicality”. The concept features sharp body surfacing, bold LED headlights, and large bumper intakes, with a silhouette that leans toward a sporty estate.

The sloping roofline leads to a ducktail spoiler with two fins instead of a conventional rear wing and a large diffuser with an F1-style brake light. Another cool touch is the gold-finished aero covers on the wheels, contrasting with the black alloys and the red brake calipers.

The electric concept promises a “driver-friendly layout and a comfortable, spacious interior”, while incorporating “various innovative technologies” for “intuitive, exhilarating driving experiences”. Subaru has shared renderings of the architecture, revealing a floor-mounted battery, front and rear electric motors, and a sporty suspension setup.

Hatchback With Heritage

The second debut, the Performance-B STI concept, sticks with internal combustion power. It’s described as broadening Subaru’s range of performance options, which also makes us believe it could evolve into a production offering.

The hot hatch looks like a high-performance version of the current Impreza five-door hatchback elevated to STI glory. It rocks wide fenders with integrated vents, a hood scoop, redesigned bumpers with larger intakes, and a wider grille with a red stripe. There is also a massive rear wing and a rather complicated diffuser without visible exhaust pipes.

The aggressive bodykit, in combination with the alloy wheels shod in high-profile tires, make it resemble a motorsport-ready machine. Under the hood sits a boxer engine paired with Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, although we don’t have any info concerning output figures.

While it’s uncertain whether Subaru will put this hot hatch into production, such a model would recall the third-generation WRX STI from 2008 and could challenge the Toyota GR Corolla in spirit and layout.

Adventure-Ready SUVs

On the adventure side of the display, Subaru showcases prototypes of the fully electric Trailseeker (E-Outback) crossover, the new Forester Wilderness, and the latest Outback Wilderness.

All three will make their Japanese debut fitted with optional outdoor accessories. The Trailseeker carries a roof box, the Forester mounts two large canoes, and the Outback features a roof rack with a bike carrier.

Retro Meets Wild

Rounding out the show stand will be the Family Huckster, a reimagined 1983 Subaru GL Wagon fitted with dramatic performance and aerodynamic upgrades.

Daihatsu Revives Tiny Japanese Legend With An Electric Twist

Daihatsu joins Toyota’s larger showcase at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, taking part in a series of concept car debuts that highlight each brand’s vision for the future. Among them is the Midget X, a fully electric concept designed to bring one of Daihatsu’s classic nameplates into a new era.

The Midget is a pint-sized workhorse with a big personality. Born in 1957 as a tiny three-wheeler for shopkeepers and delivery drivers, it zipped through Japan’s narrow streets with motorcycle-like agility.

It returned in 1996 as the Midget II, blending nostalgic styling with a can-do spirit. Production ended in 2001, but it seems Daihatsu isn’t quite ready to let the story end there.

A Tiny Classic Recharged

The all-new Midget X has been reborn as a tiny LCV with an electric powertrain. Daihatsu said “it’s like a bicycle plus a little something extra”, adding that it is “the perfect size for anyone starting something new, whether it’s raising children, running a business, a hobby, or just playing”.

Its exterior design nods to the original Midget lineage, featuring round LED headlights and a helicopter-style windshield. It also has semi-exposed wheels with integrated lights and a battery charge indicator on the profile.

The concept includes a backpack-style storage compartment although this area can transform into an extended rear bed or a larger box for commercial use.

Inside, the EV adopts a central driving position with an unconventional steering wheel flanked by two passenger seats for toddlers. Daihatsu designers added special touches like the tiny compartment next to the seat that can be filled with biscuits, and other toy-like elements around the cabin.

Another cool feature is the rotational handle design for the rear hinged doors, while a similar mechanism is used for opening the cargo area.

Daihatsu hasn’t released technical specifications yet, only noting that “because it’s small, it can fit into a variety of lifestyles,” and that it “aims to make everyone happy.”

Carrying the Torch

The Midget X stands as the next chapter in Daihatsu’s story, carrying forward the legacy of some of its most influential models. Among them are the original Midget three-wheeler, the fourth-generation Hijet LCV, the first-gen Charade hatchback, the sporty Mira TR-XX, the Copen roadster, the second-gen Tanto kei car, and the Nibako mobility service that transforms LCVs into mobile shops.

For now, the Midget X is nothing more than a concept. Even so, it wouldn’t be surprising if it eventually transitions into a production model, potentially for both Japan and export markets.

After all, Toyota President and CEO, Koji Sato described the concept as the “Midget of the future” during the official presentation at the Japan Mobility Show:

“Making small cars is incredibly difficult. As someone who has been involved in car-making, I can say that from my heart. But Daihatsu continues to take on such challenges. Now, as then, Daihatsu’s car-making is staying the course. Going around town to listen to what people are saying… thinking about how to help people when it finds someone in trouble… racking its brain over how it can make the most of its technologies for making things small. This led to the Midget X.”

Nissan Fixed The Ariya Right After Ghosting America

  • Nissan previewed the updated Ariya before its debut at the Japan Mobility Show.

Like they say, life goes on. While the Nissan Ariya may be on its way out of the U.S. lineup after the 2025 model year, a refreshed version has just broken cover in Japan. The facelifted electric crossover will be unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo, where it will share the spotlight with the next-generation Elgrand minivan and several other new arrivals.

Originally introduced in 2020, the Ariya didn’t enter production until 2022. Three years on, Nissan has decided it’s time for a thorough update to keep the electric SUV looking fresh against an ever-growing list of rivals.

New Looks and Tech

The most noticeable change is the redesigned front end, which adopts a cleaner, grille-free appearance paired with Leaf-inspired LED headlights. The bumper has been reworked for a simpler look that drops the previous side intakes, while the lower intake gains a more restrained shape. The fog lights have quietly disappeared as well, streamlining the overall design.

The profile is carried over, but the five spoke alloy wheels have gained a new texture, combined with a fresh color option for the exterior. Nissan didn’t share photos of the rear end, where we expect more subtle updates.

Besides the new looks, the Ariya will gain a Google-powered infotainment, Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, and a revised suspension setup “tailored for Japanese roads”. There is no word on any changes to the electric powertrain options and battery packs.

Underneath, a revised suspension setup tuned specifically for Japanese roads aims to deliver a more composed and comfortable drive. So far, Nissan hasn’t mentioned any updates to the electric powertrain or battery options.

The refreshed Ariya will reach Japanese showrooms later in the fiscal year. Whether it returns to the U.S. market for the 2027 model year remains uncertain.

The Next-Gen Elgrand Steps Forward

Another major highlight of Nissan’s Tokyo showcase will be the all-new, fourth-generation Elgrand. Previewed through earlier teasers, the new model takes inspiration from the futuristic-looking 2023 Hyper Tourer concept.

At the front, it features a sculpted nose with pixel-like LEDs and body-colored elements blending with its covered grille. We can also see it has sliding doors, more curves on its boxy silhouette, and full-width taillights.

Under the skin, the Elgrand will use Nissan’s third-generation e-Power hybrid setup. This combines a 1.5-liter gasoline engine that acts purely as a generator with electric motors driving the wheels, resulting in smooth, quiet performance and improved efficiency.

The new hybrid configuration positions the Elgrand to compete more directly with the Toyota Alphard. Nissan also promises an upgraded interior with enhanced comfort, finer materials, and more advanced driver-assistance technology.

The market launch of the all-new Elgrand is expected in 2026. The previous generations debuted in 1997, 2002, and 2010 respectively.

Expanding Mobility Concepts

In addition to its production vehicles, Nissan will present an autonomous mobility service prototype based on the Serena minivan. The pilot program begins in November near Nissan’s Yokohama headquarters, aiming to test transport solutions for Japan’s aging population.

The brand’s booth will also feature a full roster of vehicles, including the newly launched Leaf, the next-generation Roox kei car, the recently facelifted X-Trail Rock Creek, the Fairlady Z, and the upcoming 2026 Skyline 400R Limited Edition.

Furthermore, visitors will be able to check out the Micra EV subcompact hatchback from Europe, the N7 electric sedan from China, and the Patrol flagship SUV from the Middle East. Finally, Nissan will showcase the GEN3 Formula E car from Season 11 that helped win the driver’s championship title.

The Japan Mobility Show 2025 will be held at the Tokyo Big Sight between October 31 and November 9. However, Nissan’s press conference will be livestreamed on the first media day that takes place on October 29.

Nissan’s Most Expensive Leaf Yet Misses Out On A Key Feature

The latest generation of the Nissan Leaf has arrived in Japan, marking its official launch in the brand’s home market after making its first appearance in North America earlier this year.

The all-electric fastback crossover retains much of its global character but introduces a few domestic-market distinctions, including an Autech edition that leans more toward a sportier, higher-end feel, within the practical and monetary constraints of the category.

At 4,360 mm (171.7 inches) long, the Japanese Leaf is 44 mm (1.7 inches) shorter than the version sold in the United States. Like its European counterpart, it omits amber indicators, while the rest of the design remains the same. Inside, the Japanese Leaf comes equipped with twin 12.3-inch displays, though it skips the larger 14.3-inch setup offered elsewhere. What it lacks in screen size, it makes up for in equipment, featuring an optional dimming panoramic glass roof, a 10-speaker Bose Plus Sound System, and V2H (Vehicle to Home) capability.

Autech Adds Visual Drama

Nissan’s in-house Autech division has given the Leaf a sportier presence. The bespoke bodykit introduces a prominent splitter with aluminum accents that continue across the side inserts, mirror caps, and rear skirt. A black grille, blue daytime running lights, unique bumper detailing, and Autech badging round out the looks.

The Leaf Autech also sits on exclusive 19-inch aluminum wheels and can be specified in Deep Ocean Blue paired with a Super Black roof. Buyers can also choose from Prism White with Super Black or a full Midnight Black finish.

As with most Autech models, the dark-themed interior is more premium than the standard Leaf. It stands out thanks to the black upholstery with blue stitching and piping. It also comes with a unique pattern and Autech embroidery on the seats, special seatbelts, and branded floor mats.

Even without the larger dual-screen cockpit seen in other markets, equipment levels remain generous, including cold-weather amenities such as heated rear seats.

Specifications And Range

At launch, the Japanese Leaf is available exclusively in B7 form, offered in two trims, X and G. Power comes from a single electric motor producing 215 hp (160 kW / 218 PS) and 355 Nm (261.8 lb-ft) of torque, sent to the front wheels. The Autech variant shares this setup, meaning there are no added performance or chassis tweaks beyond its sharper styling.

The 78 kWh battery promises an impressive 702 km (436 miles) of range under the WLTC cycle, which tends to be more optimistic than Europe’s WLTP (604 km / 375 miles) and America’s EPA estimate (488 km / 303 miles).

An entry-level B5 model, with a smaller battery and less power, will join the range later, along with a corresponding Autech version for those wanting the look without the higher spec.

Pricing

Pricing for the Japanese-market Leaf starts at ¥5,188,700 (around $34,000) for the B7 X trim, rising to ¥5,999,400 ($39,300) for the top-spec B7 G. The Autech commands a higher entry price at ¥6,513,100 ($42,700), with optional extras pushing it higher still. Deliveries across Japan are expected to begin in early 2026.

In the United States, pricing remains more accessible, with the entry-level S starting at $25,360 and the Platinum+ topping out at $38,990.

From Robots To EVs, Suzuki’s Tokyo Show Lineup Has It All

Interest in small EVs continues to grow, and this year’s Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo looks set to highlight how compact design and electric efficiency can go hand in hand. Suzuki’s lineup for 2025 brings that idea to life with a mix of concept and production models.

The company’s showcase is headlined by the world premiere of the Vision e-Sky concept, a preview of a fully electric kei car that will enter production in the near future.

Compact Optimism

According to the company, the minicar is designed for daily commuting and short weekend trips. It follows the theme of “Unique, Smart, Positive” and aims to evoke a “cheerful” mood. It also appears to be the first vehicle to adopt Suzuki’s redesigned logo, featuring a flatter design and a matte aluminum finish.

The Vision e-Sky adopts a hatchback silhouette with a short hood, minimal overhangs, a floating roof, and clean surfacing. The C-shaped LED headlights are combined with an illuminated grille and matching taillights. It rides on futuristic aero-style wheel covers and features flush door handles, although these might change for production.

In line with kei car packaging regulations, the EV measures 3,395 mm (133.7 inches) long, 1,475 mm (58.1 inches) wide, and 1,625 mm (64 inches) tall. Suzuki didn’t reveal the specifications of the electric motor or the battery pack but promises a driving range of over 270 km (168 miles) between charges.

The interior looks close to production status. It features a digital cockpit, a floating center tunnel, ambient lighting, and a dashboard that doubles as a tray. We can also see touch-sensitive A/C controls, a futuristic steering wheel with integrated buttons, and new seats with purple headrests.

The production version of the Vision e-Sky will arrive within the Japanese fiscal year 2026, which ends on March 31, 2027. As with the rest of Suzuki’s kei car lineup, sales will most likely be limited in Japan.

Other Exhibits

The Vision e-Sky will be joined by several two- and four-wheel vehicles, along with robots, micro-mobility solutions and outboard motors from Suzuki’s product lineup.

Among the automobiles we find the e Every Concept, an electric kei van with a 200 km (124-mile) range. First shown in 2023, it will soon evolve into a production model alongside the identical Daihatsu Hijet and Toyota Pixis Van.

Suzuki will also display the Fronx FFV Concept, powered by ethanol, and the Vitoris CBG that runs on CNG. As for production vehicles, visitors will be able to check out the new Suzuki XBee, along with the Spacia, e-Vitara, and Jimny Nomad.

Two Wheels and More

In the two-wheel segment, Suzuki will showcase a fully electric version of the classic VanVan motorcycle updated with modern styling cues and LED lighting.

It will be joined by the e-Address production electric scooter, the DR-Z4SM supermoto, the retro-flavored GSX-8T and GSX-8TT production motorcycles, the GSX-R1000R superbike, the ethanol-powered GIXXER SF 250 FFV, a hydrogen-powered version of the Burgman, and the e-PO folding electric bicycle.

The company will also display a range of mobility solutions, some of which are evolved versions of earlier 2023 concepts. These include the MOQBA 2, a four-legged platform that can carry people or products, the SUZU-RIDE 2, a four-wheeled personal mobility scooter, and the Glydways, an autonomous pod designed for car sharing.

Finally, the MITRA concept is a tiny four-wheeled electric vehicle with AI tech designed to serve as undercarriage for a variety of robots.

The Japan Mobility Show 2025 will open its doors to the public from October 24 to November 3 at the Tokyo Big Sight convention center in the Ariake district.

While most agree that the facelifted Model 3 that was unveiled two years ago is an improvement over the model it replaced, there’s one aspect that many dislike about the new model: the absence of a turn signal stalk. For some unexplained reason, Tesla decided to move the signals to the steering wheel. Others, like Ferrari, have done the same, but Elon Musk’s products are targeting a much wider audience.

However, much to our surprise, traditional stalks are making a comeback, but so far only on Asian-delivered Model 3s in three specific markets. This week, Tesla previewed an updated Model 3 that will be sold in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. In its promotional material, the brand revealed that the tweaked Model 3 includes a stalk for the turn signal positioned on the steering column, just as it should be.

A Quiet Reversal

The reappearance of the stalk isn’t entirely new. Beyond keeping them on the refreshed Model Y, Tesla also quietly brought it back for the Chinese-market Model 3 in August, even offering retrofits for older cars at 2,499 yuan, or about $350. This rollout now extends to three more countries, suggesting Tesla has fully reintroduced the hardware into its production line.

In addition to reintroducing a stalk for the Model 3 in Asia, the company has fitted a front-facing camera on the bumper. It’s a feature Tesla fans have been requesting for years, and it should make squeezing into tight spaces noticeably less stressful.

What About The US?

Despite those changes in cars sold in Asia, Tesla has yet to confirm if it will make the same small additions to American ones, but we think it’d be weird not to. Evidently, it has found suppliers for these parts and has all the tooling to install them, so it’ll simply be a matter of adding them to US-built cars.
