BMW Recalls Thousands Of EVs That Can Lose Power While Driving

  • BMW is recalling more than 70,000 electric vehicles that can lose drive power.
  • A number of models are impacted including the i4, i5, i7, and iX from 2022 to 2024.
  • The recall is being blamed on a software issue that can trigger a fail-safe shutdown.

BMW is recalling 70,852 EVs because their electric drive motor software may shut down the high-voltage system. This can result in a loss of drive power, which increases the risk of a crash.

An assortment of models are impacted including the 2022-2025 i4, 2022-2024 iX, and 2023-2024 i7. BMW is also recalling 4,674 i5s from the 2024 model year.

According to the safety recall report, the electric drive motor software may “erroneously detect a double-isolation condition.” If this occurs, the high-voltage system will shut down for approximately 15-20 seconds following a warning message. This will effectively leave drivers coasting, but the government noted the steering and braking system will continue to operate.

BMW began investigating the issue in 2021 and initially believed debris could have gotten into electric motors and affected their performance. However, there was a “very low number of claims” at the time and this made it hard to pinpoint the problem.

BMW Recalls Thousands Of EVs That Can Lose Power While Driving

Despite the difficulties, the automaker spent years looking into the issue and eventually focused on the possibility of a loss of propulsion due to detection of a double-isolation condition. This analysis suggested the “vehicle software could not determine, whether a detected double-isolation condition was, in fact, a true double-isolation condition, which warranted a high-voltage system shutdown or, was, in fact, only a single-isolation condition.” This is important as a double-isolation condition triggers a shutdown of the high-voltage system as part of a fail-safe measure to prevent an electric shock or a “thermal risk.”

BMW believes they have received approximately 43 warranty claims related to the issue, which resulted in loss of propulsion at speeds greater than 20 mph (32 km/h). Thankfully, the company isn’t aware of any accidents or injuries related to the problem.

To address the issue, BMW will install new electric drive motor software as part of an over-the-air update. Customers can also have this installed at dealerships and owner notifications are slated to go out on August 5.

Geely Could Make Lotus Great Again By Moving Production To America

  • Lotus could cease production in the United Kingdom and shift assembly to America.
  • Closing the Hethel plant could result in approximately 1,300 people becoming unemployed.
  • Lotus’ first plug-in hybrid is coming later this year as customers turn their backs on EVs.

Update: Lotus released a statement saying: “Lotus Cars is continuing normal operations, and there are no plans to close the factory. We are actively exploring strategic options to enhance efficiency and ensure global competitiveness in the evolving market.” They added, “Lotus remains committed to the UK, and its customers, employees, dealers, suppliers, as well as its proud British heritage.”

Lotus had a tough first quarter as they delivered 1,274 vehicles, which was a 42% decline from a year ago. The bad news continued with revenues of just $93 (£67.8 / €79.4) million, which was a year-over-year decline of 46%. The company also posted a net loss of $183 (£133.4 / €156.2) million.

That’s a bad showing, but Lotus confirmed their first plug-in hybrid model is coming later this year. It will have their 900V Hyper Hybrid EV technology, which was originally announced last November.

More: We Drove Lotus’ Electric SUV To See If It Can Silence Its Haters

At the time, the company said the Hyper Hybrid powertrain would deliver a combined driving range in excess of 684 miles (1,100 km). That’s a huge improvement over the Eletre, which has a WLTP range of between 254 and 373 miles (409 – 600 km) in the UK.

Besides talking about Hyper Hybrids, Lotus CEO Qingfeng Feng said “We remain closely attuned to evolving dynamics in key markets such as the U.S. and are actively evaluating strategic pathways as well as localization opportunities to further strengthen our presence and expand sales operations in the global markets.” That seems to have been a huge hint about the future of Lotus production.

Geely Could Make Lotus Great Again By Moving Production To America

In fact, Autocar is now reporting that production will end in Hethel and be moved to the United States. That would likely be the final nail in the coffin for claims about being a ‘British’ automaker.

The publication suggests Lotus production could be moved to Volvo’s plant in Ridgeville, South Carolina which currently builds the EX90 and Polestar 3. This would help the company get around Trump’s tariffs, even though the US and UK have already reached a trade deal. Despite that, Lotus told the publication Emira production has been paused since the middle of May as part of the “fallout from the increase in tariffs in its key market of the US.”

Geely Could Make Lotus Great Again By Moving Production To America

BBC News says the move is only under consideration at this point, but it could result in approximately 1,300 people losing their jobs. However, the Financial Times suggests the decision has already been made and implies the situation is dire as the company has reportedly “struggled to pay its suppliers in recent weeks.”

While Lotus has a lot of problems, one of the biggest appears to be that their customers aren’t interested in EVs. As Feng noted, “We … understand that a pure-electric sports car is not going to attract a lot of attention.” To get around this, the aforementioned Hyper Hybrid powertrain will be found in both lifestyle cars – like the Eletre and Emeya – as well as sports cars.

This Is The Electric GT That Will Either Save Or Kill Jaguar

  • Jaguar’s upcoming electric four door GT has been spied ahead of its debut late this year.
  • The model follows in the footsteps of the Type 00 concept, but features a tamer design.
  • The sedan will ride on the new Jaguar Electrical Architecture and offer 430 miles of range.

Jaguar has largely gone radio silent since unveiling the Type 00 concept in December. It marked the beginning of a new era for the brand, which had struggled trying to chase Audi, BMW, and Mercedes.

However, a lot is happening behind the scenes as the British automaker continues testing their “electric four door GT.” It’s slated to debut late this year and will be built in the United Kingdom.

More: Radical Jaguar Type 00 Concept Previews Make-Or-Break Electric Sedan

A prototype was recently spied undergoing testing near the Nürburgring and it appears to remain pretty faithful to the concept. While a number of details are hidden by camouflage and padding, we can see the production model will have an upright front fascia and slender headlights. They’re joined by a sporty lower intake that is broken up into three different sections.

Bigger changes occur further back as the production model has four doors and a larger greenhouse. Designers also gave the car flush-mounted door handles and a massive charging port cover. Elsewhere, there are sizable wheels and a sporty roofline that echoes the concept.

The rear end is heavily disguised, but could be far more harmonious than the appliance-like rear end seen on the Type 00. Details are hard to make out, but it appears the model will have a slender, split taillight bar. We can also get a glimpse of what appears to be a more curvaceous bumper and fascia.

We can expect to learn more later this year, but the company has already confirmed the car will ride on the all-new Jaguar Electrical Architecture. It’s also slated to have a range of up to 430 miles (692 km) as well as a fast charging capability that can deliver 200 miles (322 km) of range in as little as 15 minutes.

Trump’s Attack On EV Charging Just Suffered A Major Setback

  • Several states have prevailed in a lawsuit against the Trump administration over EV charger funding.
  • Congress approved billions of dollars in funding, but it was eventually paused earlier this year.
  • A preliminary injunction could go into effect next month, but the federal government may appeal.

The Trump administration has suffered another blow, this time from a U.S. District Judge in Washington. She ordered the government to release billions in funding for new electric vehicle charging stations.

In a lengthy ruling, which started off with a reference to a Simpsons episode, the judge noted Congress appropriated $5 billion to fund a National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program to “strategically deploy electric vehicle charging infrastructure and to establish an interconnected network to facilitate data collection, access, and reliability.”

Despite the ruling, several states argued the Trump administration and his Secretary of Transportation decided they “would disregard Congress’s mandate.”

More: Trump Administration Hits Pause On EV Charger Funding

As part of this effort, the Federal Highway Administration rescinded its administrative guidance on the program, revoked state deployment plans, and stopped distributing funds. Sixteen states and the District of Columbia cried foul as the program was approved by Congress during the Biden administration.

They argued the move “represented an unlawful seizure of legislative authority under the separation-of-powers doctrine enshrined in the United States Constitution and an overextension of executive authority beyond what is permitted by law.”

Trump’s Attack On EV Charging Just Suffered A Major Setback

While that’s the gist of the argument, Judge Tana Lin sided with Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington, and Wisconsin. As a result, she ordered a preliminary injunction that prevents the government from suspending or revoking any previously-approved electric vehicle infrastructure deployment plans from the aforementioned states.

The government also can’t withhold previously approved funding. However, the injunction was stayed and won’t go into effect until July 2. That being said, if the government appeals, the injunction won’t take place.

What happens next remains to be seen, but ABC News noted the Trump administration argued that the program was simply paused until new guidance was developed. Regardless, the delays and lawsuits will likely continue to slow the growth of America’s charging network.

Burning Ship Full Of Cars Sinks After Mysterious Blaze Off Alaska

  • The Morning Midas has sunk approximately 450 miles off the coast of Alaska.
  • The ship caught on fire earlier this month and was carrying over 3,000 vehicles.
  • While only 70 cars were EVs, they’ve been identified as a possible source of the fire.

Weeks after a fire broke out aboard the Morning Midas, the ship has sunk. The vessel went down on Monday in international waters, approximately 450 miles (724 km) southwest of Adak, Alaska.

The United States Coast Guard said the ship capsized at around 5:35 pm, and then sank to a depth of approximately 16,400 feet (4,999 meters). The ship was carrying 3,048 vehicles including 681 hybrids and 70 EVs. The latter have been rumored as a possible source of the fire, although that’s not entirely clear.

This Concept EV Will Morph Into An AMG Super Sedan You Can Buy

  • Mercedes revealed the AMG GT XX concept previewing next year’s production performance sedan.
  • It features a high-tech battery and a tri-motor axial flux powertrain producing more than 1,341 hp.
  • The concept rides on the AMG.EA platform made of aluminum, steel, and fiber composite materials.

Mercedes-AMG is going electric and they’re doing it in a big way with the GT XX concept. It’s an insane four-door coupe with three axial flux motors producing a combined output in excess of 1,341 hp (1,000 kW / 1,360 PS).

Designed to preview the redesigned AMG GT 4-Door, the concept is a huge departure from its predecessor. Besides going electric, the model has an odd exterior that will undoubtedly attract a mixed reaction.

More: 2026 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door EV Is The Cure For Boring Jelly Beans

The fish-like front end is dominated by a massive grille that spans nearly the entire width of the vehicle. It’s so wide that designers had to incorporate the auxiliary lights into it.

Further above, there are stacked headlights and a motorsport-inspired hood with split air outlets. Elsewhere, we can see a subtle splitter that flows into the outside edges of vertical air curtains.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Designers gave the concept a rakish windscreen, which meets a coupe-like roofline. This results in a compact greenhouse, which is notable for eschewing a rear window like the Polestar 4.

Aside from gun slit windows, the model has flush-mounted door handles and 21-inch aero wheels. The latter have sections that open and close to balance aerodynamics with brake cooling. They’re joined by sporty side skirts that have “luminescent paint segments,” which “emit light in response to an alternating current.”

The rear end is a little plain, but features muscular haunches and an active airbrake. They’re joined by a carbon fiber diffuser and six circular LED taillights. However, the concept is more notable for being equipped with an MBUX Fluid Light Panel, which has more than 700 programmable RGB LEDs. This enables communication with the outside world via text or animation.

Rounding out the highlights are exterior speakers tucked into the headlights, designed to “emit driving sounds”. Mercedes hasn’t shared any specifics, but a recent teaser showed a prototype of the production car pumping out fake engine noise that sounded like a V8.

The concept, finished in a vibrant Sunset Beam orange paint, also boasts an impressively low drag coefficient of 0.198.

A Minimalist Interior Lacking In Luxury

\\\\\\\\\

While Mercedes used to be all about leather and wood, the interior of the GT XX resembles a racing simulator. This feel is amplified by a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14-inch infotainment system, and a compact steering wheel inspired by the AMG One.

Elsewhere, there’s a unique center console with illuminated orange tubes that are designed to recall voltage cables. The concept also has carbon fiber seats, an exposed carbon fiber roof, and a floor covering made from 100% recycled materials.

Designers gave the car a minimalist dashboard and metal components that are part computer, part Back to the Future. They’re joined by lightweight door panels that have integrated bars as well as orange pull loops.

A Powertrain That Hints At The Future

This Concept EV Will Morph Into An AMG Super Sedan You Can Buy

While the styling will undoubtedly draw attention, the most important details are hiding under the skin. That’s clear as the concept rides on the new AMG.EA platform and features a high-performance battery developed from scratch.

The three axial flux motors come from Yasa and offer a high output in an extremely compact package. They’ll go into production next year and be found on an assortment of upcoming AMG models including the new GT 4-Door and SUV.

Mercedes didn’t reveal many details about the motors, but confirmed one is mounted up front while two reside out back. This gives the concept a fully variable all-wheel drive system as well as a combined output in excess of 1,341 hp (1,000 kW / 1,360 PS). That’s enough to enable the car to hit a top speed of more than 223 mph (359 km/h).

This Concept EV Will Morph Into An AMG Super Sedan You Can Buy

The motors aren’t the only interesting development as the concept has a high-performance NCMA battery that has an anode with silicon content. Mercedes said It offers an energy density of 300 Wh/kg as well as a long lifespan.

Delving a little deeper, the battery has cylindrical cells and a laser-welded aluminum cell housing. These developments promise weight savings as well as rapid heat dissipation. Speaking of the latter, the battery also has a “high-tech coolant” that “flows around each individual cell to maintain the optimum temperature.”

Fast applies to more than just acceleration as the concept can gain approximately 249 miles (400 km) of range in around five minutes.  That’s impressively quick and this was made possible thanks to a “very high average charging power of more than 850 kW.”

Since that’s many times higher than traditional DC fast chargers, Mercedes teamed up with Alpitronic to develop a prototype charging station. While the production model likely won’t be nearly as impressive, the company said they’ll expand the Mercedes‑Benz Charging Network with next-generation chargers that deliver “extremely fast charging times.”

As for the AMG.EA platform, it uses a mix of aluminum, steel and fiber composite materials to offer lightness and “exceptional rigidity.” Mercedes also noted the electric skateboard architecture enables the battery to be centrally integrated into the structure to offer a high level of crash safety.

Bring On The Buttons! Facelifted VW EVs To Have Physical Switchgear

  • Volkswagen is reportedly gearing up to introduce the facelifted ID.3 and ID.4 next year.
  • The models are slated to have ID.2-inspired styling and an updated interior.
  • Powertrain updates are also expected, so look forward to more power and efficiency.

Volkswagen of America recently announced the 2026 ID.4 would benefit from a “mid-model-year change” that would see the electric crossover “receive additional features.” While that was a pretty cryptic hint about an update, we’re starting to learn more about the upcoming model.

Speaking to Autocar, Volkswagen’s board member for technical development indicated the ID.3 and ID.4 will get a facelift that brings them more in line with the ID.2. As part of the makeover, Kai Grünitz suggested we can expect a “lower and squatter stance.”

More: Here’s What’s Coming To VW’s 2026 Lineup

The styling updates are said to continue inside, where we can expect an all-new interior. Details are hazy at the moment, but the publication said there will be a new dashboard and user interface.

Volkswagen is also slated to bring back physical switchgear including a round volume knob. As one insider noted, “If you develop something that works, and it has worked for years, there’s no reason to replace it.”

Cadillac Delivers First $350,000 Celestiq EV

  • Cadillac has delivered the first Celestiq to a customer during a private event in Michigan.
  • The car starts around $350,000 and can be customized with the assistance of a Celestiq concierge.
  • A 111 kWh battery pack feeds a dual-motor all-wheel drive system with 655 hp and 646 lb-ft.

It’s been a long and bumpy road, but Cadillac is one step closer to returning to the “Standard of the World” as the first Celestiq was delivered to its owner during a private ceremony at Cadillac House. The moment was years in the making as the model debuted in the fall of 2022 and was originally slated to go into production the following year.

Of course, the company’s return to the ultra-luxury segment started long before this happened. In fact, it can probably be traced back to Cadillac’s reinvention in 2002, which saw the unveiling of the CTS. Not long after, in 2003, Cadillac unveiled the stunning Sixteen concept and hinted at their return to the upper echelons of automotive elegance.

More: We Visit Cadillac House, Home Of The Celestiq

However, fans had a long wait ahead of them and Cadillac kept them on their toes. To help keep the faith alive, they introduced a string of high-profile concepts including the Ciel and Elmiraj. The latest is the Sollei, which is essentially a drop top Celestiq.

Cadillac didn’t say much about the first production model, but they released a single picture of a brown car with a brown interior. The company noted the model was “built to the client’s individual specifications” as every customer can work with a Celestiq concierge and Cadillac designer to create a unique car that fits their “tastes and desires.”

Cadillac Delivers First $350,000 Celestiq EV

While a lot has changed in the past few years, the Celestiq is more powerful and capable than originally announced. The production model has a 111 kWh battery pack that feeds a dual-motor all-wheel drive system producing 655 hp (488 kW / 664 PS) and 646 lb-ft (875 Nm) of torque. This setup enables the car to rocket from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 3.7 seconds and travel an estimated 303 miles (488 km) between charges.

Besides the beefy powertrain, the Celestiq is notable for having power open and close doors as well as massive 23-inch wheels. The car also has an undeniable presence as it measures 217.2 inches (5,517 mm) long, which makes it longer than an Escalade.

\\\\\\\\

The interior is dominated by screens as there’s a 55-inch pillar-to-pillar display, an 11-inch Front Command Center, and an 8-inch Rear Command Center. Customers will also find two 12.6-inch rear passenger displays. Other highlights include Super Cruise, a dimmable fixed glass roof, and a 38- or 42-speaker audio system.

Pricing starts in the “mid-$300,000 range,” although the actual cost is determined by a customer’s individual level of curation.

The Surprising Reason Israel Feared A Port Full Of EVs

  • Israeli officials are reportedly urging companies to prepare for moving EVs out of ports.
  • Authorities are said to be afraid of a massive EV fire being sparked by an Iranian missile.
  • Officials seek to relocate vehicles to open lots, away from the country’s critical infrastructure.

The war between Israel and Iran started over a week ago as the country launched a surprise attack on Tehran’s nuclear program as well as military officials and scientists. Iran has reportedly responded with over 400 missiles and hundreds of drones.

This weekend, the United States entered the fray and Iran hit back by attacking the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. Despite seeming like a significant escalation, it’s been billed as a measured response as the country reportedly warned the United States ahead of the attack.

More: Korea To Ban Fully Charged EVs From Parking Garages After Massive EQE Blaze

What happens next is on everyone’s mind and Israel appears to be bracing for a drawn out conflict that will see more Iranian missiles land in their territory. In order to prepare for this possibility, the country’s Administration of Shipping and Ports has reportedly “ordered car importers to prepare to evacuate all electric vehicles from Israeli seaports.”

The Maritime Executive reports authorities want electric vehicles out of key ports such as Haifa and Ashdod. The belief is that these vehicles would be transported to empty parking lots, away from critical infrastructure.

The Port of Haifa says nearly 20 million tons of cargo pass through the port each year, making it the busiest in all of Israel. This makes it an attractive target and authorities are reportedly worried about an Iranian missile landing in the port and hitting electric vehicles. EV fires are notoriously hard to extinguish and this could be a huge problem if row upon row of vehicles went up in flames following a missile strike.

While that would be a worst case scenario, it appears to be on the minds of Israeli officials. Of course, it’s hard to say how things will pan out at this point.

Cadillac’s Baby EV Just Got More Power And A Shortcut To Tesla Chargers

  • The 2026 Optiq adds a NACS port for access to Tesla Supercharger stations.
  • A new rear-wheel drive version makes 315 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque.
  • Upgraded all-wheel drive model produces 440 hp and 498 lb-ft of torque.

Cadillac introduced the 2026 Optiq-V earlier this month and now the luxury brand has announced a series of updates to the standard model. The changes are pretty notable as there’s two new powertrains as well as a newly standard NACS port, which allows for easy access at Tesla Supercharger stations.

Starting with the entry-level Optiq, it features an 85 kWh battery pack as well as a rear-mounted motor producing an estimated 315 hp (235 kW / 319 PS) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque. That’s pretty impressive as it’s more powerful than the current all-wheel drive model.

More: Cadillac’s Baby V-Series Charges At Tesla Stations And Hits 60 In 3.5 Seconds

Speaking of which, the 2026 Optiq offers a new “rear-wheel drive based all-wheel drive system.” It produces an estimated 440 hp (328 kW / 446 PS) and 498 lb-ft (674 Nm) of torque, which is a huge improvement over the previous rating of 300 hp (224 kW / 304 PS) and 354 lb-ft (479 Nm).

Cadillac didn’t release full performance details, but said the 2026 Optiq has an estimated range of 300 miles (483 km). When the battery is low, it can get up to 79 miles (127 km) of range in as little as ten minutes.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Besides the powertrain updates, the 2026 Optiq has “Vision Enhanced Parking.” The company didn’t say much about it, but it sounds like an upgraded version of Enhanced Automatic Parking Assist and Cadillac says it uses cameras as well as radar sensors.

Last but not least, the crossover comes with the latest version of Super Cruise. It features a number of improvements including Google Maps integration and automatic lane changes to stay on your route. There’s also a new hands-on capability that keeps the vehicle centered in its lane and following a safe distance from the car ahead. This allows for smoother transitions to and from Super Cruise-enabled roads.

There’s also an upgraded adaptive cruise control system, which can automatically adjust to keep pace with changing speed limits. Like in the Vistiq, the system should let you speed, if you want to. As an example, if you’re doing 75 mph in a 70 mph zone and the speed limit drops to 55 mph, the car would do 60 mph.

Cadillac didn’t mention pricing, but the 2026 Optiq will arrive at dealerships later this year.

Buick’s Electric Crossover Just Got A Lot Better In China

  • Buick has detailed the facelifted E5 crossover, which features a host of improvements.
  • Besides a fresh face, the EV has an upgraded interior with a new AI assistant.
  • The E5 will be offered with a front-mounted motor and three battery packs.

Following a preview earlier this month, Buick has officially launched the facelifted Electra E5 in China. According to the brand, it features 47 “user-driven upgrades” as well as revised styling and an improved powertrain.

The automaker was coy on specifics, but the crossover adopts a streamlined and less fussy design. As part of the makeover, the faux grille has been replaced by a stylish shark nose front end with soft curves and a sportier bumper.

More: Buick Electra E4 Unveiled As The Second Ultium EV For China

Elsewhere, there are hidden door handles, rain-sensing wipers, and subtle matte silver trim. The new E5 also sports “more fashionable and dynamic” taillights as well as 18- or 19-inch wheels, while higher-end variants add rear privacy glass and a panoramic sunroof, among other things.

A Familiar But Upgraded Interior

\\\\\\\\\

The interior appears to largely carryover, but Buick made a number of minor improvements. Key among them is the expanded use of soft-touch materials, which now cover 64% of contact surfaces. The rear seats also recline by 27 degrees for a more relaxed posture.

On the technology front, there’s a 30-inch curved display that supports Apple CarPlay as well as iOS 26. Buick also confirmed the E5 comes with SAIC-GM’s first AI voice assistant. It promises to respond in a matter of milliseconds and can execute up to ten sequential voice commands. The assistant also integrates with other AI models such as DeepSeek, Doubao, and ERNIE.

If you’d rather sit in silence, no problem as the crossover has “premium” insulation and double-layer acoustic glass. This results in an interior noise level of 22 dB which, according to its maker, make it one of the quietest EVs on the market.

Buick’s Electric Crossover Just Got A Lot Better In China

In terms of equipment, the entry-level model comes with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and an eight-speaker audio system. They’re joined by fabric and leather front seats with eight-way power adjustment on the driver’s side. Higher-end models are more luxurious as they have heated leather seats and a 14-speaker Bose premium audio system.

Customers will find a host of standard driver assistance systems like adaptive cruise control, lane centering, and forward collision warning. Moreover, the safety equipment list includes automatic emergency braking, blind zone alert, and lane departure warning.

Three Batteries And One Electric Motor

\\\\\\

Three different powertrains are available. The entry-level model feature a 65 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery that provides a CLTC range of 320 miles (515 km) and is paired to a front-mounted electric motor producing 241 hp (180 kW / 245 PS) and 243 lb-ft (330 Nm) of torque. This enables the E5 to accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 7.7 seconds and hit a top speed of 112 mph (180 km/h).

The next version comes with a 68.4 kWh ternary lithium battery, which increases the range to 339 miles (545 km). Despite having the same motor, it is a tad quicker as 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill come in 7.5 seconds.

Drivers who need to travel long distances will likely opt for the range-topping variant of the E5. This comes with a 76.8 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, which provides 385 miles (620 km) of range. However, it’s the slowest of the lot, sprinting to 62 mph in 7.8 seconds.

Buick’s Electric Crossover Just Got A Lot Better In China

Some details were undoubtedly lost in translation, but the press release implied the crossover has a new electric motor that was developed in-house. It’s oil-cooled and promises “industry-leading” high-speed efficiency.

Buick also noted the E5 has battery cells co-developed with CATL. This helped pave the way for a 30% increase in charging speed, meaning a 20 minute stop can deliver up to 217 miles (350 km) of range.

Pricing starts at ¥149,900 ($20,852) for the entry-level version and climbs to ¥169,900 ($23,635) for the range-topping Premium Edition. However, you’d better like black, white or gray ,as those are the only colors available, at least initially.

VW’s Hottest Hatch Could Have 400 HP And A 3-Motor Setup

  • A new report suggests Volkswagen is considering a tri-motor ID.2 R with 400 hp.
  • This model could surpass the Golf R in performance and handling capabilities.
  • Spy photographers captured the standard ID.2, expected to arrive next year.

Volkswagen previewed the upcoming ID.2 GTI with a concept at the 2023 Munich Motor Show, and a new report suggests it could be followed by a hardcore ID.2 R. If things pan out, it could be even more powerful than the 2025 Golf R.

According to a report from Autocar, the German carmaker is considering an ID.2 R as part of a wider effort to “explore the potency and torque-vectoring potential of hub motors.” While the model hasn’t been approved at this point, it could have a high-tech powertrain that mixes ‘old’ with new.

More: VW ID. GTI Concept Is A Hot ID.2 With Fake Gearshifts That’s Coming In 2026

In particular, the car could use the front-mounted motor from the ID.2 GTI. It could be joined by two rear in-wheel motors, giving the hot hatch a tri-motor all-wheel drive system. The report suggests we can expect an output of around 400 hp (298 kW / 406 PS), which would eclipse the 328 hp (245 kW / 333 PS) Golf R.

Besides packing plenty of power, the tri-motor powertrain would allow for impressive handling. This would reportedly be aided by “predictive torque distribution, brake-based yaw control, and dynamic drive modes.”

Little else is known about the car at this point, but it would likely feature the usual R upgrades. As a result, we can expect unique interior and exterior styling as well as a sportier driving experience.

ID.2 Continues Testing

Spy photographers recently snapped an ID.2 prototype disguised as a Polo and now they’ve caught another car in the Alps. Dressed in traditional black and white camouflage, the model follows in the footsteps of the ID.2all concept but features a heavily revised front end.

The changes immediately stand out as the road-going model has a taller hood and more traditional headlights with top-mounted DRLs. We can also see a revamped bumper with a wide intake and vertical air curtains.

VW’s Hottest Hatch Could Have 400 HP And A 3-Motor Setup

The profile is virtually identical to the concept, although the lower door treatment is a tad more conservative. Elsewhere, there are larger side mirrors and an evolutionary rear end.

When the ID.2all concept was introduced, Volkswagen was planning to introduce the production model in 2025 with a base price of less than €25,000 ($28,747). While the car is now expected to arrive in 2026, Volkswagen billed it “as spacious as a Golf” and “as affordable as a Polo.”

It’s slated to ride on the new MEB Entry platform and the concept had 223 hp (166 kW / 226 PS) as well as up to 280 miles (450 km) of range. However, the production model will presumably be offered in multiple configurations.

VW Beats Tesla With Production Robotaxi

  • The production version of the autonomous ID. Buzz AD has officially been unveiled.
  • It features Mobileye’s self-driving technology and 27 sensors for improved safety.
  • The autonomous van is marketed as a turnkey solution for cities and fleet companies.

Volkswagen’s mobility-focused MOIA brand has unveiled the production version of the ID. Buzz AD. It’s been years in the making and paves the way for autonomous electric vans in Europe as well as the United States.

This announcement comes just days after Elon Musk said Tesla’s Robotaxis would begin trial operations in Austin, Texas, on June 22. Coincidence? Maybe. But the race to dominate autonomous mobility is heating up. One key difference between the two is that while Tesla’s Robotaxi will focus on serving passengers as a ride-hailing service, VW’s MOIA will primarily target corporate customers and mobility providers.

Volkswagen’s Level 4 vehicle has been “specifically optimized for use in mobility services” and features an extended wheelbase as well as a raised roof. Those aren’t the only changes as the van has “intuitive boarding via smartphone,” which implies riders use their device to unlock the vehicle.

Once inside, riders are treated to a revamped interior that features ‘wood’ flooring, large grab handles, and four passenger seats. We can also see SOS, Support, and Start/Stop buttons. MOIA also said the van has onboard AI to “ensure comfort and safety.”

Interestingly, the vehicle has a driver’s seat and what appears to be a steering wheel covered in cloth camouflage. This suggests the model may accommodate a safety driver, although the seat can apparently be pushed out of the way when not in use.

Elsewhere, the front passenger seat and center console have been removed. This frees up space for a storage compartment, which can hold luggage and other items.

The Autonomous Driving System

Of course, the real news is the autonomous driving system. MOIA said the van has a total of 27 sensors including 13 cameras, nine LiDARs, and five radars. This gives the ID. Buzz AD a “comprehensive, redundant 360-degree view of its surroundings.” The company added the van uses “Mobileye’s self-driving system, along with a proprietary Autonomous Driving Mobility as a Service (AD MaaS) Ecosystem Platform.”

While the firm didn’t delve into many specifics, MOIA said they offer public and private mobility providers a “turnkey package to launch autonomous services quickly, safely, and at scale.” They noted this can include everyone from cities and municipalities to fleet companies.

Customers that sign up can expect a “fully connected 360-degree package made up of leading technology, an attractive vehicle fleet, intelligent fleet management, and a customer-centric booking system – all from a single source.”

Plenty of questions remain, but Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume said the rollout should begin next year, pending approval. “Beginning in 2026, we will bring sustainable, autonomous mobility to large-scale deployment in Europe and the US another milestone on our path to becoming a global technology driver in the automotive industry,” he said.

BMW Could Be Bringing Back Range-Extended Models

  • BMW has reversed its stance on range-extended EVs after the i3 REx’s discontinuation.
  • The upcoming iX5 could be the first to feature such a powertrain with 621 miles of range.
  • Range-extended vehicles have gained popularity in China, with sales up nearly 50 percent.

While a number of automakers overestimated demand for EVs, BMW seems to have gotten things mostly right as they offer a mix of gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles. Chairman Oliver Zipse recently acknowledged this as he said the company has “the right products on the market at the right time.”

This has worked out for the luxury brand as nearly one in five vehicles sold by the company is fully electric. However, they also have countless other options for customers who don’t want an EV.

Even more options are coming as BMW has confirmed plans to offer a production model with a hydrogen fuel cell in 2028. However, that might not be the only powertrain on the horizon.

Quite the opposite as a new report suggests a range-extended EV could arrive as early as 2026. German outlet Automobilwoche reports that the powertrain will be offered on a version of the iX5, known as the iX5 REx, and could have a combined range of around 621 miles (1,000 km).

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Little else is known about the powertrain at this point, but it’s said to be under consideration for multiple markets including China, Europe, and North America. BMW was tight-lipped when asked about the report by Auto News, but the company didn’t deny it as a spokesperson said “We continuously analyze usage patterns, customer needs, and market developments and review the market potential of various technologies.”

While range-extended powertrains fell out of favor with many automakers in the push to go fully electric, they’ve been experiencing a bit of a resurgence. Ram introduced the 1500 Ramcharger in 2023 and CEO Tim Kuniskis recently said he expects other brands to “chase it.”

That already seems to be playing out as Scout will offer a range-extended powertrain and Ford CEO Jim Farley recently came out praising range-extended models. Jeep is also said to be cooking up a range-extended version of the Wagoneer, although we haven’t heard much about it in the wake of Ramcharger delays.

The NSX Is Dead, So Honda Will Build This Odd EV In Its Place

  • Honda has unveiled an electric quadricycle, which will be launched later this year.
  • The model is designed for last-mile deliveries in North America and Europe.
  • Multiple configurations will be available and one will have up to 23 miles of range.

Honda has launched a new micromobility company, called Fastport, and announced plans to show its first product at Eurobike later this month. Known as the eQuad, the electric quadricycle is a last-mile delivery vehicle intended for use in urban areas.

The rolling oddity is a far cry from the Acura NSX, but it aims to reduce urban congestion while also meeting rising consumer demand for faster, more frequent deliveries. As part of this effort, the eQuad is designed for use in bike lanes and will be offered in a variety of configurations to meet customer demand.

Honda mentioned Small and Large eQuads as well as Small and Large cargo boxes, which will enable the model to “cater to a wide range of uses – including parcel, grocery, and small package deliveries.” The Small model measures 133.9 inches (3,400 mm) long, 39.4 inches (1,000 mm) wide, and 82.7 inches (2,100 mm) tall, while the Large eQuad comes in at 144 inches (3,658 mm) long, 48 inches (1,219 mm) wide, and 84 inches (2,134 mm) tall.

They’ll have cargo boxes offering roughly 96 to 148 cubic feet (2,718 to 4,191 liters) of space. Furthermore, we can expect payload capacities of 320 lbs (145 kg) and 650 lbs (295 kg).

On the styling front, there isn’t much to report as the eQuad is essentially a box on wheels. That being said, there’s a central bike-like seat and two handle bars. They’re joined by a sizable display, which acts as a digital instrument cluster and infotainment system. The model also sports lights, mirrors, a UV-coated canopy, and a fan to help keep the driver comfortable.

Honda didn’t release many specifications, but confirmed the eQuad will have a top speed of 12 mph (20 km/h). The company also said the Small model will have a range of up to 23 miles (37 km), although the actual distance depends on the payload.

The NSX Is Dead, So Honda Will Build This Odd EV In Its Place

The automaker added the eQuad has a “pedal-by-wire pedal-assist powertrain” that uses swappable batteries. They’re joined by a regenerative braking system as well as automatic parking brakes.

The eQuad will be built at the Honda Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio, which was recently home to the NSX. Initial European and North American deliveries are slated to begin in late 2025, before production ramps up the following year.

Dodge’s Electric Charger Is Too Quiet For Its Own Good

  • Dodge is recalling thousands of Daytona EVs that don’t emit pedestrian warning sounds.
  • Incomplete software uploads can prevent exterior warnings, raising the risk of a collision.
  • Chrysler is also recalling 140 minivans that may have a faulty rearview camera system.

The Dodge Charger Daytona traded a roaring Hemi V8 for an electric powertrain that sparked backlash from fans. The results haven’t been pretty as some models are being discounted by more than $20,000.

Slow sales aren’t the only issue as Dodge is recalling 8,390 Charger Daytonas from the 2024 and 2025 model year. They’re too quiet for their own good as missing software can prevent the amplifier from emitting pedestrian warning sounds. This means it runs afoul of rules designed specifically for hybrid and electric vehicles, which can travel silently at low speeds.

More: It’s Official, Dodge Is Killing The Electric Charger Daytona R/T

Dodge estimates that 3% of the recalled units may have experienced an “incomplete software upload.” FCA US began investigating the issue in April of this year and the fix is relatively straight forward as dealers will update the amplifier software, if needed. Owner notifications are slated to be mailed out on July 10 and repairs will be free of charge.

Chrysler Pacifica and Voyager Recalled Over Camera Issue

In other news, Stellantis is recalling 140 Chrysler Pacifica and Voyager minivans from the 2023 model year. They have a “manufacturing error,” which can prevent a rearview camera image from being displayed.

Delving into the safety recall report reveals the issue is related to a “solder void between the circuit board and an image signal processing chip.” 2.9% of the recalled vehicles are believed to have the problem and dealers will inspect and replace the rearview camera as needed. Like in the Charger Daytona recall, notification letters are slated to go out on July 10th.

Honda’s Latest Concept Looks Familiar Yet Unexpectedly New

  • Honda will introduce the Super EV Concept at the Goodwood Festival of Speed next month.
  • The A-segment five-door hatchback is fully electric and likely previews a production model.
  • Honda will also showcase the new Prelude, a motorcycle concept, and the 0 SUV prototype.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed kicks off next month and Honda will use the event to introduce an electric urban vehicle concept. Known as the Super EV, the concept looks like a thinly veiled production model that could serve as a successor to the Honda e.

The automaker isn’t saying much at this point, but the concept is a five-door hatchback that recalls the Nissan Cube. It features a curvaceous front bumper and a fully enclosed grille with an integrated charging port. They’re joined by circular headlights and vertical air curtains.

Moving further back, we can see a short hood and bulging fenders. The concept also has an upright windscreen, slender pillars, and a relatively flat roof.

Honda’s Latest Concept Looks Familiar Yet Unexpectedly New

While Honda was tight-lipped about specifics, they said the concept was “designed to demonstrate how an A-segment model might offer fresh, fun-to-drive electric performance alongside trademark Honda usability.” They added the “small, sporty model has already carried out feasibility testing in the UK in the lead-up to the event – as part of a wider global program,” once again hinting at production.

A Lot Of Other Things To See

Besides the new EV concept, Honda will stage the European premiere of the 0 SUV prototype. It will be accompanied by the EV Fun and EV Urban concepts, which are an electric motorcycle and scooter.

They’ll be joined by the new Prelude, which will be tackling the famous hill climb. Other notable highlights include the Honda-powered Williams FW11, the Civic Type R Ultimate Edition, and a Miimo robotic lawnmower.

Ten Minutes Separate This Hyundai From Glory

  • Hyundai and Evasive Motorsports will tackle Pikes Peak with a one-off Ioniq 5 N.
  • It features a multitude of carbon fiber components and a 500 lb weight reduction.
  • The EV will be driven by Rob Walker, who previously competed with a Scion FR-S.

The countdown to the 103rd running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb continues as Hyundai and Evasive Motorsports have unveiled a hardcore Ioniq 5 N. It’s slated to race up the 12.42 mile (20 km) long course on June 22 with Rob Walker behind the wheel.

Billed as Evasive Motorsports’ “most ambitious EV project to date,” the specially prepared Ioniq 5 N Pikes Peak has undergone a radical transformation and lost 500 lbs (227 kg) in the process. That’s a significant reduction and it was made possible by stripping the interior and creating a new set of doors out of carbon fiber. They’re joined by a carbon fiber tailgate and a number of one-off components.

More: Acura’s Tackling Pikes Peak With A Hardcore Integra Type S

Evasive said one of the biggest hurdles was sourcing competition parts, since very few exist for the Ioniq 5 N. However, Japan’s Voltex stepped up and created an aerodynamic body kit that includes a carbon fiber splitter, bulging fender flares, and new side skirts. They’re joined by carbon fiber underbody paneling and a massive rear wing.

Aerodynamics aside, the car has been outfitted with Krontec air jacks and 19-inch Titan racing wheels wrapped in Yokohama racing slicks. They’re joined by a six-point roll cage and a Moton coilover suspension with prototype anti-roll bars from EVS Tuning. Rounding out the highlights are CSG Spec brake pads and a Sparco carbon fiber seat.

\\\\\\\\

Since the electric motors can’t be tuned, the car features a familiar dual-motor all-wheel drive system producing up to 641 hp (478 kW / 650 PS) and 568 lb-ft (769 Nm) of torque. This enables the road-going model to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 3.25 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 162 mph (261 km/h).

Evasive Motorsports co-president Mike Chang said they’re aiming to “break the elusive 10-minute barrier” this year. He added, “We’ve come close in the past and feel it’s far more achievable with the Ioniq 5 N.”

This Renault Prototype Launches Drones And Could Save Your Life

  • Renault has unveiled a one-off fire rescue concept, based on the 4 E-Tech.
  • Envisioned as a mobile command center, the concept can launch drones.
  • It features an increased ride height and a dual-motor all-wheel drive system.

Emergency vehicles usually aren’t very exciting, but Renault has taken the wraps off the new Vision 4Rescue concept. It’s based on the Renault 4 E-Tech and features a drone that can be deployed from a roof-mounted storage box.

Billed as a mobile fire command center, the Vision 4Rescue features a bright red exterior with a mix of matte and gloss graphics inspired by emergency services. They’re joined by chunky fender flares and an extra 0.6 inches (15 mm) of ground clearance.

More: Ford’s Bronco Wildland Firefighting Command Vehicle Is Hot Stuff

Elsewhere, there are emergency lights and modified bumpers. The latter incorporate 3D-printed bump stops that have shock-absorbing properties to minimize damage.

The most eye-catching detail is the roof-mounted storage box, which is mounted on stylish supports. The aerodynamic compartment not only houses the aforementioned drone, but also equipment which can be used to “restore a communications network in the wake of a disaster.”

Renault says the interior was developed in close collaboration with fire services and features a split cargo area. The upper section has a slide out workspace with two monitors and a keyboard. It serves as a communications hub as well as a monitoring station for the drone.

The lower section features two storage compartments, which are designed to hold emergency equipment. This includes helmets, bags, tablets, and walkie-talkies.

\\\\\\\\\\

The cockpit follows in the footsteps of the regular model, but has special seats with PinPon pattern upholstery. The seats are also notable for using foam sourced from recycled firefighting suits.

Elsewhere, there are walkie-talkie holders and “Je te reçois 4 sur 4” badging. The latter means ‘Reading you loud and clear.’

Renault went on to say the concept has a dual-motor all-wheel drive system and helps to promote the Software République consortium. In particular, the company said the car has nearly 20 interconnected solutions and Software République developed an ecosystem “designed to standardize the different technologies used by … emergency services for a faster and better coordinated response.”

BMW’s New Electric SUV Goes 400 Miles And Knows What You’ll Do Before You Do

  • BMW has revealed the new iX3 will debut at the Munich Motor Show in September.
  • EPA range expected to reach 400 miles thanks to high-density cylindrical battery cells.
  • New Motorway & City Assistant system can brake for red lights and resume when green.

BMW has released new details about the redesigned iX3, ahead of its debut at the Munich Motor Show this fall. Set to become the first Neue Klasse vehicle, the crossover promises to be a major leap forward.

That isn’t just hype as BMW confirmed the model will use new cylindrical battery cells that have a 20% higher energy density than the prismatic cells being used today. Thanks to this change, the iX3 50 xDrive is slated to have an EPA range of up to 400 miles (800 km WLTP / 900 km CLTC).

More: BMW’s Baby M SUV Might Be Lurking Under This iX3

That’s a truly impressive number, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg as the model also has a 400 kW DC fast charging capability. This will enable the crossover to get more than 217 miles (350 km) of range in as little as 10 minutes.

Faster and Smarter Charging

Speaking of charging, the iX3 has an “intelligent charging flap” that automatically opens thanks to the use of artificial intelligence. As the automaker explained, when the driver approaches a familiar or learned charging point, the flap automatically opens when it arrives to make the recharging process a little faster and convenient.

Customers will also find bidirectional charging capabilities including Vehicle-to-Load, Vehicle-to-Home, and Vehicle-to-Grid. The latter functions are enabled by a new 19.2 kW Wallbox and they enable the crossover to act as an emergency power source.

Panoramic iDrive And New Driver Assist Technology

BMW’s New Electric SUV Goes 400 Miles And Knows What You’ll Do Before You Do

While most of the cabin is covered by cloth camouflage, the iX3 features a Panoramic iDrive system that consists of a pillar-to-pillar display as well as a large center-mounted screen running BMW Operating System X.

They’re joined by a funky, “shy-tech” steering wheel that has buttons that illuminate when various functions are available. They’re joined by slender air vents, door-mounted seat controls, and an optional 3D head-up display.

On the topic of technology, BMW confirmed the iX3 will have next-generation driver assistance systems that use AI. The crossover also has processing speeds that are 20 times faster than the previous system.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

The automaker was hazy on specifics, but mentioned hands-free highway driving as well as an automatic lane change function. They’ll be joined by a new Motorway & City Assistant system, which “helps the driver in complex driving situations in urban areas.” It can reportedly handle tight corners and roundabouts as well as automatically brake for red lights, before resuming when they turn green.

There’s even cooperative steering and braking, which will allow drivers to turn the steering wheel or apply brakes “just a little.” Doing so will adjust the response of the automated driving system without shutting it off.

We can also expect an advanced parking system that offers an “AI-based selection of parking assistance services, parking space recognition, maneuver planning, and an improved parking experience.”

Production of the iX3 will begin late this year and deliveries will, presumably, begin shortly thereafter.
