Model S And X Get Quiet Refresh And Louder Price Hikes

  • The updates are relatively minor and are accompanied by a price hike across the range.

The Model S and Model X currently account for less than 5% of Tesla’s annual sales, but despite this, they have been updated one more time. The changes made to the two EVs are relatively minor, particularly compared to the overhauled Model 3 and Model Y launched over the past 18 months, but for those seeking the most premium Teslas on sale (Cybertruck excluded), they will be welcome.

Subtle Exterior Tweaks

From a visual standpoint, there’s very little to tell the refreshed Model S and Model X from the outgoing cars. However, the Plaid versions of the duo adopt newly designed front bumpers that give them a slightly more aggressive look. Whether or not that’s a good thing will be a matter of personal taste, but there’s no doubt that despite the basic shape of the Model S now being 13 years old, it still looks good. The Model X, on the other hand, is as bulbous as ever.

Sticking with the visual updates, both models get new wheels. The Model X sports 20- and 22-inch wheels, while the Model S can be configured with new 19- and 21-inch rims. Tesla has also incorporated a new and improved camera into the front bumper, while the headlights have been updated with new adaptive functions. According to Tesla, the changes made to the exterior of the Model S Plaid also enhance its high-speed stability.

Elsewhere, the new Model S and Model X can be optioned in a new shade known as Frost Blue, which is a $2,500 option.

Mechanical Changes and Refinements

Much like the most recent updates made to the Model 3 and Model Y, Tesla has also made some upgrades under the skin of both models, although they don’t go as far as the 3 or Y. They include new bushings and an updated suspension ride, which the carmaker says should improve the ride. Other alterations also promise to make the cabin even quieter, thanks in part to a better Active Noise Cancellation system.

Interior Touches and Price Adjustments

The interior of both models has been largely retained from the outgoing model. With that being said, configurable ambient lighting has been added to the dashboard, door panels, and around the center console. Tesla has also proudly boasted of a unique animation for the ambient lighting when the EV is started up, not something you get on the cheaper 3 or Y.

We all know that Tesla loves to chop and change prices on a whim, so it comes as no surprise that both these new models command a premium over the outgoing ones. The Model X will still be offered in Long Range and Plaid guises, priced from $89,990 and $104,990, both increases of $5,000. Similarly, the Model S is available as a Long Range or Plaid, with prices starting at $84,990 and $99,990, respectively.

Ten Minutes Separate This Hyundai From Glory

  • Hyundai and Evasive Motorsports will tackle Pikes Peak with a one-off Ioniq 5 N.

The countdown to the 103rd running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb continues as Hyundai and Evasive Motorsports have unveiled a hardcore Ioniq 5 N. It’s slated to race up the 12.42 mile (20 km) long course on June 22 with Rob Walker behind the wheel.

Billed as Evasive Motorsports’ “most ambitious EV project to date,” the specially prepared Ioniq 5 N Pikes Peak has undergone a radical transformation and lost 500 lbs (227 kg) in the process. That’s a significant reduction and it was made possible by stripping the interior and creating a new set of doors out of carbon fiber. They’re joined by a carbon fiber tailgate and a number of one-off components.

Evasive said one of the biggest hurdles was sourcing competition parts, since very few exist for the Ioniq 5 N. However, Japan’s Voltex stepped up and created an aerodynamic body kit that includes a carbon fiber splitter, bulging fender flares, and new side skirts. They’re joined by carbon fiber underbody paneling and a massive rear wing.

Aerodynamics aside, the car has been outfitted with Krontec air jacks and 19-inch Titan racing wheels wrapped in Yokohama racing slicks. They’re joined by a six-point roll cage and a Moton coilover suspension with prototype anti-roll bars from EVS Tuning. Rounding out the highlights are CSG Spec brake pads and a Sparco carbon fiber seat.

Since the electric motors can’t be tuned, the car features a familiar dual-motor all-wheel drive system producing up to 641 hp (478 kW / 650 PS) and 568 lb-ft (769 Nm) of torque. This enables the road-going model to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 3.25 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 162 mph (261 km/h).

Evasive Motorsports co-president Mike Chang said they’re aiming to “break the elusive 10-minute barrier” this year. He added, “We’ve come close in the past and feel it’s far more achievable with the Ioniq 5 N.”

At the 2025 Toyota Technology Day in China, there was no shortage of promises and future-focused tech talk. While much of the spotlight was on product updates, the real takeaway was Toyota’s push to inject artificial intelligence and advanced electrification into its lineup, especially in partnership with local tech giants.

Among the headline announcements, next-generation versions of the Highlander and Sienna will feature extended-range electric powertrains. Alongside these updates, Toyota and its local joint venture partner GAC laid out plans for two new energy vehicle platforms and confirmed strategic collaborations with Chinese heavyweights like Huawei and Xiaomi.

Two New EV Platforms in the Pipeline

Starting with the new platforms, they are designed for “new energy vehicles”, meaning they will be compatible with fully electric, range-extender, and plug-in hybrid powertrains. One platform is optimized for compact to mid-size vehicles under 5 meters long (196.9 inches), while the other is designed for larger vehicles up to 5.3 meters (208.7 inches).

Toyota’s upcoming bZ7 will be the first model to use the larger of the two new platforms. Serving as the brand’s electric flagship in China, depending on pricing, it could positioned as an affordable rival to the similarly sized Tesla Model S. Although the bZ7 was first previewed in April 2025, its launch in the Chinese market is scheduled for the first quarter of 2026.

This model also marks a major shift in Toyota’s tech strategy. The fully electric bZ7 will be the first to feature the Huawei DriveONE powertrain, which combines the motor, MCU, and inverter into a single integrated unit. Inside, it gets the Huawei Hongmeng cockpit system, offering an updated suite of apps and connectivity options. It will also come equipped with a LiDAR sensor, suggesting it’s being prepped for advanced autonomous driving capabilities.

AI, ADAS, and the “Caring Butler” Future

Besides the new platforms that are being developed in China, GAC Toyota is working on a new electronic architecture that will support the next generation of ADAS and advanced intelligent cockpits. Artificial intelligence is expected to play a growing role in how these systems evolve.

According to Chinese outlet Sohu, GAC believes the in-car voice assistant will become a “caring butler” by 2026–2027, and by 2028, it’s expected to mature into a “symbiotic partner” capable of intuitively responding to user needs, even claiming to “read people’s hearts.”

The Japanese automaker will also collaborate with Xiaomi for in-vehicle technology, such as audio, and a clever intercommunication system between front and rear occupants using the built-in screens and cameras.

Digital Chassis and Broader AI Integration

Looking further ahead, upcoming GAC Toyota models will feature an AI-powered “intelligent digital chassis.” This system will be able to read road conditions in real time, adjusting suspension characteristics through electromagnetic shock absorbers and dual-chamber air suspension systems, which sounds similar to what Tesla is offering on higher end models.

GAC Toyota also envisions an AI ecosystem extending beyond vehicles. The company plans to integrate AI into areas like research and development, manufacturing, quality inspection, and logistics. What’s less clear is whether any of these innovations will make their way into Toyota’s global product lines, or if they’ll remain exclusive to the Chinese market.

Performance fans have had it pretty good in recent years, especially from some unlikely sources. The Stinger GT, especially with the 3.3-liter turbocharged V6, was one of those outliers, setting a high standard when it landed and proving Kia could do more than just practical commuters.

Since then, the Korean brand has turned out a handful of genuinely compelling performance cars. But that chapter is winding down. The GT badge isn’t going anywhere, but its connection to gasoline power is nearing the end.

Speaking to members of the press, Australian product chief Roland Rivero confirmed to CarSales that Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) as a whole is gradually moving away from combustion engines because of regulations. “The N tagline is being more and more applied to electrified product, and for a bunch of reasons,” he said.

“You’ve got to satisfy the global situation, and CO2 regulations are tightening all around the world,” Rivero continued. “Ours is going to catch up very, very quickly too, so I can understand why R&D centers are still trying to dial up driving enjoyment responsibly.”

The Last of the GT Gas Crowd

This is a serious blow to those who love performance cars. Since the Stinger GT came out, Kia has been quietly offering a great value in its sports cars. That sedan was genuinely excellent to drive and still lives on to a degree in the Genesis G70. Kia still sells the K5 GT, a front-wheel-drive sedan that packs more power than it probably needs, which, lets be honest, isn’t always a bad thing.

As we understand it, the K5 GT will be the last combustion-powered GT car from Kia. Meanwhile, Hyundai has already committed to another generation of the Elantra N, reportedly with a bigger engine. So the torch hasn’t gone out completely, but the flame is flickering.

Shifting Gears: From Gas to Kilowatts

Keep in mind that many brands, big and small, have backtracked from previous goals to go all-electric. Even Porsche, which has been talking about an electric 718 for ages, is changing its tune. Can Kia and Hyundai make a success of EV performance cars while other brands get cold feet?

If any brand can make electric performance succeed, it seems like Kia and its corporate partner, Hyundai, are the ones to do it. The EV6 GT is a genuinely epic little hatchback to drive, and it’s supercar-quick. Then, if that’s not good enough, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is basically everybody’s favorite performance EV.

“There’s no reason why an electrified product can’t give you a similar experience [to internal combustion performance cars], albeit with some computer tech and what not,” Rivero said. “Hot hatches are harder to justify as a business case, ongoing, when you combine all the elements of CO2 regulations and the global movement [toward electrification].”

The Kia boss was also asked about the possibility of hybrids or range-extended EVs playing a role in Kia’s performance future. He didn’t confirm anything, but as CarSales noted, there are ongoing rumors that Hyundai is developing hybrid N models. If that’s true, it’s likely Kia could follow suit.

So sure, it’s sad to see combustion GT cars go away, and Hyundai Motor Group might come to regret this choice… but at least the performance we’ve come to appreciate from the brand isn’t dying altogether.

Passenger Turns Tesla Windshield Into Unexpected Headrest During Viral Fail

Just because you see something funny or interesting online, that doesn’t mean you should try to copy it. The occupants of a Tesla Model X Plaid have learned that the hard way while trying to replicate a video featuring a Porsche 911 Turbo S went awry. Thankfully for all of us, the fail was caught on film and shared online for our viewing pleasure.

Last week, the owner of a Porsche 911 Turbo S shared a viral video on Instagram that demonstrates how quickly the flagship sports car launches off the line. In the clip, the owner’s young son is pinned so forcefully into the backrest of the passenger seat that he’s able to lift up his legs, essentially floating as the Porsche picks up speed.

While viewers were quick (and rightfully) to criticize the father for not securing his kid with a seatbelt, the internet still ate it up, as the post has racked up over 12 million likes. Go figure.

A Copycat Stunt Goes Predictably Wrong

Eager to replicate this clip, inevitably in an attempt to go viral, two men in a Model X Plaid had the amazing idea of doing the same. But it seems as though they completely forgot about the EV’s regenerative braking. The result? The passenger ends up smashing their head into the windshield.

Like the Porsche, the Model X Plaid can accelerate quickly enough to pin the passenger into the seat, allowing him to briefly lift up his legs. However, as soon as the driver lets off the throttle, the passenger goes flying forward and his head smashes into the windshield when the SUV starts to brake. His head hit the glass so hard that it shattered, and in all likelihood, he was probably left with a hefty concussion.

Making things even worse for the occupants is that the Model X’s windshield is particularly expensive to replace as it stretches much further back than a typical one, roughly in line with the front headrests.

So what did we learn? Seatbelts matter. Regenerative braking is not your friend in stunts like these. And above all, trying to go viral by copying strangers on the internet is a fantastic way to end up with a busted windshield and a CT scan. Subaru might be gearing up to bring back a familiar nameplate, and for fans of quirky utility vehicles, this one’s worth paying attention to. We’re not talking about the possible return of the STI, but something even more unexpected: a modern take on the Brat or Brumby, depending on which side of the planet you’re on.

This small pickup truck was a fixture in North America from 1978 to 1987, remembered as much for its utility as its unmistakably odd charm. If it’s coming back, though, expect some big changes.

A new report out of Australia claims that Subaru is actively exploring a revival of the Brat, and perhaps unsurprisingly, it could be brought to life with the help of Toyota. The world’s largest automaker is reportedly developing a small truck of its own, and Subaru could piggyback off that effort by sharing the same underpinnings. The two brands have a long history of collaboration, from the BRZ and GR86 twins to recent efforts like the bZ Woodlands and Trailseeker EVs.

Whether this joint project leads to an all-electric pickup remains unclear. While Toyota originally floated the idea of a fully electric compact truck, current market conditions suggest a combustion-powered or hybrid option is also on the table. Either way, affordability appears to be the common goal.

It’s a mystery what the new-age Brat could look like. Heck, we don’t even have a good idea of how Toyota’s pickup will look like. Toyota did preview an electric concept called the EPU back in 2023, but whether that design translates into a production model remains to be seen.

Obviously, it’s all very speculative at this point. And if this project is real, it might end up channeling more four-door Subaru Baja than two-door Brat when all is said and done.

Regardless of how Subaru goes about styling the new model, it seems inevitable that it will be much larger than the original. That’s a shame, but beggars can’t be choosers, I suppose. Odds are, it’ll end up somewhere in the same size class as the Ford Maverick or Hyundai Santa Cruz, compact by today’s standards, but still a far cry from the tiny trucklet it once was.

Now, it’s important to note that Subaru has not confirmed a revival of the Brat, and CarsGuide has only received word of the project “through the grapevine.” As is so often the case, we recommend taking this report with a grain of salt, at least until Subaru makes some kind of announcement, or perhaps follows the lead of Toyota and drops a mysterious teaser image of the new model.

If the Brat does make a comeback, expect it to feature all-wheel drive, as you’d imagine from Subaru. The Australian website speculates that it could be electric (though as we mentioned, we’re not so sure about that), powered by dual motors putting out a combined 375 horsepower and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque.

The report also claims Subaru could reveal plans for its new truck as early as this year’s Tokyo Motor Show in November.

Over 10,000 Owners Sue Tesla Over This Widespread Complaint

  • Numerous owners have complained about phantom braking at highway speeds.

Tesla’s troubles are stacking up like traffic on the 405 during a power outage. Between falling sales, public backlash, and a growing list of lawsuits including one in France over Musk’s antics, the electric automaker finds itself in yet another international legal mess. This time, it’s not just the usual social media outcry or a shareholder spat, but a pair of class actions in Australia, with customers calling out everything from phantom braking to misleading marketing.

We first reported on the lawsuit back in February, and new developments show it has officially made its way into the Federal Court. Around 10,000 Tesla owners in Australia have now joined the class action, suggesting that concerns about the vehicles are far from isolated.

The lawsuit, brought by law firm JDA Saddler, claims that Tesla vehicles have a troubling tendency to slam on the brakes without warning. One owner told ABC News his car abruptly slowed down while he was driving on a major highway, an experience that’s becoming all too familiar among Tesla drivers.

Rebecca Jancauskas of JDA Saddler says the firm has received numerous reports of vehicles braking suddenly while traveling at highway speeds at 100 or even 110 km/h (62 to 68 mph). And importantly, these incidents aren’t limited to when Autopilot is turned on. Drivers have reported the same problem even when they’re fully in control.

“Drivers have reported feeling completely terrified when their vehicles have braked suddenly, and it has led in some cases to collisions,” Jancauskas told ABC. “We’ve had many reports of people who registered for this class action, telling us that they’ve been driving with their hands on the vehicle, fully alert, and these issues have occurred nonetheless.”

Claims About Range and Autonomy Under Fire

Beyond the braking problem, the lawsuit also targets Tesla’s advertised driving range. It says the brand’s EV “lack the ability to achieve, or come close to achieving, the advertised maximum range or the range displayed on the vehicle’s dashboard when the battery level is greater than 50%.” The lawsuit claims that Tesla has known its vehicles cannot achieve their mileage claims for several years, yet has done nothing to address it.

In addition, the lawsuit takes issue with Tesla’s Autopilot system, noting “the hardware on Tesla vehicles is incapable of supporting fully autonomous or close to autonomous driving.”

Although more than 10,000 owners have signed on to the class action, Australia’s federal infrastructure department says it has received only six formal complaints about phantom braking. That discrepancy raises questions about the reporting process, but it doesn’t necessarily undermine the broader concerns voiced by Tesla drivers across the country.

This Is The Most Powerful Opel You Can Buy Today

With multiple Stellantis brands sharing similar hardware across a sea of small crossovers, if one model gets a feature, it’s usually just a matter of time before it shows up elsewhere. The latest Grandland update follows that script, adopting the familiar dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup we’ve seen elsewhere. The result? It’s now the most powerful Opel you can buy today.

The Opel Grandland Electric AWD makes 321 hp (239 kW / 325 PS) and 509 Nm (375 lb-ft) of torque, putting it on equal footing with the top versions of the Peugeot E-3008 and E-5008. A 210 hp (157 kW / 213 PS) motor handles the front axle, while the rear gets a second unit producing 111 hp (82 kW / 112 PS). Together, they deliver a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of 6.1 seconds, which is quick by family SUV standards.

The driver has access to Eco, Normal, AWD, and Sport modes, affecting the powertrain, steering, and accelerator pedal. Furthermore, the Grandland Electric AWD comes standard with frequency selective damping technology and specific tuning for the springs, anti-roll bar, steering, and ESC. Energy is stored in the standard 73 kWh battery pack, allowing a WLTP range of 311 miles (500 km).

Design changes are subtle but functional. The all-wheel-drive Grandland gets sportier front and rear bumper inserts, said to be aerodynamically optimized, complete with carbon-style accents. It also rides on new 20-inch two-tone alloy wheels. These updates help the SUV achieve a drag coefficient of 0.278 Cd, the lowest in the Grandland range.

At the back, the chrome Grandland badge has been replaced by embossed lettering on the tailgate. Inside, Opel highlights a slightly different color palette for the ergonomic Intelli-seats, though the rest of the interior appears mostly unchanged. The model will be sold across Europe and the UK, wearing either Opel or Vauxhall branding depending on the market.

Strangely, Opel has decided not to give this variant the GSe badge, even though it outpaces the outgoing Grandland GSe plug-in hybrid, which made 296 hp (220 kW / 300 PS). Despite the upgraded drivetrain and handling tweaks, the new electric AWD model goes without the sport-focused label.

Opel hasn’t shared exact timing for the Grandland Electric AWD’s arrival in mainland Europe, but the Vauxhall version is scheduled to launch in the UK this autumn. Pricing details will be announced closer to that release.

New York School Bus Matron Pleads Guilty to Trespassing

A Staten Island school bus matron New York City’s term for an aide or monitor — for students with special needs pleaded guilty to criminal trespassing after being accused of invading the home of a family from her route with a knife, reported SLive News.

The incident reportedly occurred on Dec. 6, when 59-year-old Joanne Dash entered the unidentified family’s property in the New Springville neighborhood.

According to the news report, a person at the home told authorities the defendant was in the area that leads to the main living room armed with a knife. An 18-year-old male resident came downstairs and encountered Dash before she fled in a vehicle but not before shouting, “You cost me my job.”

Dash was reportedly arrested on Dec. 17. Court documents do not state whether she had any interactions with anyone at the home prior to the incident, but sources with knowledge of the case said the victims were from her school bus route.

The article states that Dash was arraigned in criminal court on May 1, was granted supervised release, and appeared in supreme court last week on her own volition. The court, meanwhile, issued a full and final order of protection for the owner and residence of the property where the incident took place.

On June 5 while in court, Dash’s attorney John Rapawy told the judge that his client was fully aware of the terms of her plea deal and that she had full support of her family in putting the matter behind her. It remains unclear why Dash tresspassed the property in the first place.

The defendant reportedly assured the court that she was willing to waive several rights in taking a guilty plea, including the right to appeal and to review the prosecution’s evidence.

Per the approval of prosecutors and after further investigation, the court ordered Dash to complete 16 courses of anger management as a means to resolve the case. The defendant was reportedly facing the possibility of between five and 25 years in prison had she been convicted by a jury on the top count in connection to the incident.

If Dash violates the terms of the plea deal, she could be sentenced to one year in jail.

This New Hyundai Isn’t Here To Play Nice With Model 3 Performance

  • Hyundai released new teaser images of the high-performance Ioniq 6 N electric sedan.

Hyundai’s electric performance push isn’t losing momentum, and the Ioniq 6 N is poised to take the next step. Building on the success of the Ioniq 5 N, which proved that an electric hot hatch can hold its own against its gas-powered rivals, the new performance sedan will make its official debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 10.

The Ioniq 6 N has been in the works for a few years now, with early clues pointing to the 2022 Hyundai RN22e concept and a steady stream of camouflaged prototypes caught in the wild. The first official teaser dropped in April 2025 alongside the facelifted base model. Now, Hyundai is teasing more images of the upcoming EV, spotlighting its performance-focused design details.

Sharper Looks, Familiar Shape

While the Ioniq 6 N carries over the split headlight layout and sporty bumpers from the refreshed N Line model, a few key details separate it from the pack. Around back, it sports a prominent rear wing perched above the integrated ducktail spoiler, giving the sedan a more track-ready silhouette.

A closer inspection shows wider fenders front and rear, along with more aggressive bumper inserts that hint at its enhanced performance. The teaser images show the car in Hyundai N’s signature Performance Blue paint, accented by familiar red trim. Lightweight alloy wheels wrapped in sticky performance tires complete the look.

Serious Hardware Underneath

More important changes are expected under the skin. Hyundai says that the development of the model was centered around three pillars: Corner Rascal, Racetrack Capability, and Everyday Sports Car.

Under the bodywork, expect it to share a similar dual-motor setup with the Ioniq 5 N, which puts out 601 hp (448 kW / 609 PS), or up to 641 hp (478 kW / 650 PS) when N Grin Boost is engaged. Power will likely come from the same 84 kWh battery pack used across the lineup. That should give it more than enough punch to take on the Tesla Model 3 Performance.

Besides the extra power, the N-branded EV will benefit from chassis tweaks, including a revised adaptive suspension, beefier brakes, and a more direct steering. It will also inherit a bunch of N-specific electronics such as the simulated dual-clutch automatic gearbox and the artificial sounds, focused on improving the driving experience.

Thanks to its lower stance and more aerodynamic design, the Ioniq 6 N could deliver even greater performance than the Ioniq 5 N. With the hot hatch now two years into its lifecycle, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Hyundai N debut new performance features with its sedan counterpart.

More details will come when the Ioniq 6 N makes its full debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, taking place in the UK from July 10 through 13.

This Renault Prototype Launches Drones And Could Save Your Life

  • Renault has unveiled a one-off fire rescue concept, based on the 4 E-Tech.
  • Envisioned as a mobile command center, the concept can launch drones.
  • It features an increased ride height and a dual-motor all-wheel drive system.

Emergency vehicles usually aren’t very exciting, but Renault has taken the wraps off the new Vision 4Rescue concept. It’s based on the Renault 4 E-Tech and features a drone that can be deployed from a roof-mounted storage box.

Billed as a mobile fire command center, the Vision 4Rescue features a bright red exterior with a mix of matte and gloss graphics inspired by emergency services. They’re joined by chunky fender flares and an extra 0.6 inches (15 mm) of ground clearance.

Elsewhere, there are emergency lights and modified bumpers. The latter incorporate 3D-printed bump stops that have shock-absorbing properties to minimize damage.

The most eye-catching detail is the roof-mounted storage box, which is mounted on stylish supports. The aerodynamic compartment not only houses the aforementioned drone, but also equipment which can be used to “restore a communications network in the wake of a disaster.”

Renault says the interior was developed in close collaboration with fire services and features a split cargo area. The upper section has a slide out workspace with two monitors and a keyboard. It serves as a communications hub as well as a monitoring station for the drone.

The lower section features two storage compartments, which are designed to hold emergency equipment. This includes helmets, bags, tablets, and walkie-talkies.

The cockpit follows in the footsteps of the regular model, but has special seats with PinPon pattern upholstery. The seats are also notable for using foam sourced from recycled firefighting suits.

Elsewhere, there are walkie-talkie holders and “Je te reçois 4 sur 4” badging. The latter means ‘Reading you loud and clear.’

Renault went on to say the concept has a dual-motor all-wheel drive system and helps to promote the Software République consortium. In particular, the company said the car has nearly 20 interconnected solutions and Software République developed an ecosystem “designed to standardize the different technologies used by … emergency services for a faster and better coordinated response.”

Chrysler’s electric future was supposed to be just around the corner. Back in 2022, the company said it would launch its first EV in 2025 and shift to an all-electric lineup by 2028. That put it in the same boat as a long list of automakers pledging allegiance to a battery-powered future.

However, just like many other major legacy brands, including Volvo, Cadillac, Ford, GM, VW, and Mercedes, Chrysler seems to be quietly backing away from those early promises. Why? EV sales are growing, but not nearly at the pace some executives were confidently forecasting just a few years back.

Current Lineup Is Running on Fumes

Right now, Chrysler is barely keeping the lights on with just two aging minivans, the Voyager and the Pacifica, which are, for all practical purposes, the same vehicle. The brand is in serious need of something new and relevant. That was supposed to be an electric crossover slated for 2026, but the launch has now been pushed back “until further notice.”

Stellantis knows full well that Chrysler needs some serious attention, and giving the brand a real shot at relevance may mean offering powertrains that appeal to as wide a range of buyers as possible.

Stellantis design chief Ralph Gilles recently spoke with Auto News about what the future holds for Chrysler, just after it celebrated its centenary on June 6. He said the conglomerate wants to “experiment” with the brand and noted that the flexible STLA Medium and STLA Large platforms are ideal for new Chrysler products.

“I think it’s time for us to pivot,” he said. “We’re going to try. We’re going to experiment with the brand. There is an unserved part of our portfolio in our showroom that our dealers have identified that we can maybe serve with Chrysler, so we’re in the process of experimenting.”

New Platforms Could Power the Revival

“We have two brand-new platforms — STLA Medium, STLA Large — that are perfect foundations for new product, and we’re waiting for them to appear,” Gilles added. Importantly, both the STLA Medium and STLA Large platforms are designed to support ICE, hybrid, and battery-electric powertrains.

The STLA Medium platform is already being used in models like the Peugeot 3008, Citroen C5 Aircross, and the new Jeep Compass. STLA Large, meanwhile, supports both ICE and EV variants of the Jeep Wagoneer S and the new Dodge Charger.

While we wait for Chrysler’s next generation of products to take shape, Gilles confirmed that the Pacifica minivan will get an update in 2026. The refreshed model will feature front and rear fascias inspired by the sleek Halcyon concept, giving it a much-needed design nudge as the brand repositions itself.

Needless to say, that’s not going to be enough to turn things around on its own. A facelifted minivan, no matter how slick the bumpers or grille might be, isn’t going to carry the weight of an entire brand’s comeback. Chrysler will need more than just tweaks, it needs fresh models, clearer direction, and vehicles that a lot more people genuinely want to buy.

BMW has released new details about the redesigned iX3, ahead of its debut at the Munich Motor Show this fall. Set to become the first Neue Klasse vehicle, the crossover promises to be a major leap forward.

That isn’t just hype as BMW confirmed the model will use new cylindrical battery cells that have a 20% higher energy density than the prismatic cells being used today. Thanks to this change, the iX3 50 xDrive is slated to have an EPA range of up to 400 miles (800 km WLTP / 900 km CLTC).

That’s a truly impressive number, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg as the model also has a 400 kW DC fast charging capability. This will enable the crossover to get more than 217 miles (350 km) of range in as little as 10 minutes.

Faster and Smarter Charging

Speaking of charging, the iX3 has an “intelligent charging flap” that automatically opens thanks to the use of artificial intelligence. As the automaker explained, when the driver approaches a familiar or learned charging point, the flap automatically opens when it arrives to make the recharging process a little faster and convenient.

Customers will also find bidirectional charging capabilities including Vehicle-to-Load, Vehicle-to-Home, and Vehicle-to-Grid. The latter functions are enabled by a new 19.2 kW Wallbox and they enable the crossover to act as an emergency power source.

Panoramic iDrive And New Driver Assist Technology

While most of the cabin is covered by cloth camouflage, the iX3 features a Panoramic iDrive system that consists of a pillar-to-pillar display as well as a large center-mounted screen running BMW Operating System X.

They’re joined by a funky, “shy-tech” steering wheel that has buttons that illuminate when various functions are available. They’re joined by slender air vents, door-mounted seat controls, and an optional 3D head-up display.

On the topic of technology, BMW confirmed the iX3 will have next-generation driver assistance systems that use AI. The crossover also has processing speeds that are 20 times faster than the previous system.

The automaker was hazy on specifics, but mentioned hands-free highway driving as well as an automatic lane change function. They’ll be joined by a new Motorway & City Assistant system, which “helps the driver in complex driving situations in urban areas.” It can reportedly handle tight corners and roundabouts as well as automatically brake for red lights, before resuming when they turn green.

There’s even cooperative steering and braking, which will allow drivers to turn the steering wheel or apply brakes “just a little.” Doing so will adjust the response of the automated driving system without shutting it off.

We can also expect an advanced parking system that offers an “AI-based selection of parking assistance services, parking space recognition, maneuver planning, and an improved parking experience.”

Production of the iX3 will begin late this year and deliveries will, presumably, begin shortly thereafter.

  • GM has hit the gas on the production of gas-powered vehicles.
  • The company killed plans for an EV plant in Lake Orion, Michigan.
  • The facility will instead build gas-powered trucks and SUVs.

General Motors has finally acknowledged the obvious: no one is buying the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV. As we recently noted, the company only sold 2,383 Silverado EVs and 1,249 Sierra EVs in the first quarter.

Those are dreadful numbers, and they appear to have been the final nail in the coffin for plans to turn Orion Assembly into an EV plant. The facility was originally slated to build electric trucks in 2024, but that date was eventually pushed back to late 2025 to “better manage capital investment, while aligning with evolving EV demand.”

Fast forward to today, and GM has thrown in the towel on its electric truck plans. Instead, Orion Assembly will now build gas-powered full-size SUVs and trucks starting in early 2027. The move means the plant will likely produce the redesigned Chevrolet Silverado, Tahoe, and Suburban as well as the GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Yukon XL.

As for the Silverado EV and Sierra EV, they’ll continue to be built at the nearby Factory Zero in Hamtramck. That facility also builds the GMC Hummer EVs as well as the Cadillac Escalade IQ.

The Gas-Powered Chevrolet Blazer Lives

The aging Chevrolet Blazer was expected to be discontinued, but it’s getting a reprieve as production will begin at Spring Hill Manufacturing in 2027. That facility is best known for making the electric Cadillac Lyriq and Vistiq, but it also builds the dated XT5 and XT6.

Speaking of EV plants doing double duty, Fairfax Assembly is slated to begin building the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt EV by the end of this year. However, it’s getting some company in the form of the gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox, which will be built at the plant in mid-2027.

GM said the move will help support sales of the popular crossover, which was “up more than 30% year-over-year in the first quarter.” However, it’s important to note the model is currently built in Mexico, and this could have played a role in shifting some production stateside.

Unsurprisingly, GM didn’t mention tariffs or slower-than-expected electric vehicle adoption in today’s announcement. Instead, they packaged it in Trump-friendly form as CEO Mary Barra said, “Today’s announcement demonstrates our ongoing commitment to build vehicles in the US and to support American jobs.”

She added, “We’re focused on giving customers choice and offering a broad range of vehicles they love.” That’s a not so subtle hint that gas-powered vehicles aren’t going away anytime soon.

GM said the investments total around $4 billion, which is roughly the same amount of money they were investing in transforming Orion Assembly into an EV truck hub. This begs the question of how much money was squandered on the bad EV bet.

VW’s Cheapest EV Yet Hides In Plain Sight Behind Someone Else’s Face

  • VW’s ID.2 has been spied with production bodywork for the first time.

Volkswagen’s long-anticipated ID.2 electric hatchback has been snapped for the very first time with its production body giving us a glimpse of what will become the brand’s most affordable EV yet when it debuts, possibly late this year. That title may be short-lived though, as VW is already planning an even cheaper and smaller model, the ID.1, set to follow within a year or two of the ID.2’s debut, or whatever name the company ultimately gives it.

Previous sightings of the ID.2 were actually of early-stage mule prototypes based on the bigger ID.3, but this ID.2 prototype has the real sheet metal. Not that VW wants you to know it. The German automaker pulled its usual trick of adding stickers to disguise the secret EV as an existing VW car, in this case the sixth-generation Polo.

The upper and lower grilles on this test car, as well as the front and rear headlights, have all been altered through the use of stickers. Even the rear door handles are stickers – the real ones are hidden in the door frame above the window line.

Once you know what you’re looking for though, it’s not hard to see that the ID.2all concept’s slim grille, horizontal rear light bar, and classic VW arrow-shaped rear quarter panel are all present underneath the slim disguise.

The muscular fenders, wheels stuffed right into each corner, and kicked-up swage line have made the transition from auto show to street, but the production ID.2’s hood is shorter, separated from the grille/badge by a plastic panel, which helps cut repair costs in a minor front-end crash.

Built on VW’s Entry-Level EV Platform

The ID.2 is the first of a family of small VW EVs built around a new entry-level version of the automaker’s MEB electric car platform. While single-motor versions of existing MEB cars like the ID.3, ID.4, and ID.Buzz are rear-wheel drive, the ID.2, its SUV spinoff, and even smaller ID.1 will be front-wheel drive.

They’ll also switch from today’s NCM battery to a cheaper LFP type to help bring the cost of the ID.2 down to around €25,000 and enable VW to battle a raft of new low-cost EVs being launched in Europe by its rivals.

A GTI Variant, But Probably Not This One

VW has even vowed to give us an ID.2 GTI, showing us an ID.GTI concept back in 2023, and this prototype’s forged wheels, roof spoiler, and sporty bumpers give us an idea of how it might look. However, the GTI concept had an even more extreme body kit, and that, together with this prototype’s smallish front brake setup and leads us to think we’re looking at a less extreme ID.2.

But don’t expect it to be called that when it arrives. VW is dropping its ID badges and giving the production ID.2 and its siblings real names.

This Chinese Sedan Didn’t Just Crush A Porsche, It Beat A Hypercar At Nurburgring For A Fraction Of Their Price

Breaking speed records isn’t just reserved for hypercars these days. Xiaomi, better known for smartphones than for chasing lap times, caught out attention last year when a prototype of its SU7 electric sedan clocked a 6:46.874 at the Nurburgring. Now it’s back with something more official. The production version has secured the title of fastest electric vehicle at the Green Hell, posting a verified lap time of 7:04.957.

Despite being a full 18 seconds slower than the stripped-out prototype that came with more aggressive aero, the production Xiaomi SU7 Ultra was faster than the Rimac Nevera hypercar (7:05:298) and the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT (7:07:55).

Faster Than a Rimac. Yes, Really

While the new time is a full 18 seconds slower than the earlier prototype run, which featured stripped-out weight savings and more aggressive aerodynamics, the production SU7 Ultra still managed to outpace all the heavy hitters. It not only beat the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT’s time of 7:07.55, but also edged out the Rimac Nevera, which previously clocked a 7:05.298.

Xiaomi hasn’t confirmed who was behind the wheel for the Nurburgring run, but it did clarify that the car used was a production-spec model fitted with the optional track package.

CEO Lei Jun added that this won’t be the last we see of Xiaomi at the ‘Ring, suggesting the company is settling in for the long haul. To back it up, Xiaomi released an onboard video of the lap, which was also picked up by the official Nurburgring website and YouTube channel.

The video shows that the EV reaching 345 km/h (214 mph) on the long straight, just shy of its claimed top speed of 350 km/h (218 mph). Powering that performance is a tri-motor setup delivering a combined 1,527 hp (1,138 kW or 1,548 PS) and 1,306 lb-ft (1,770 Nm) of torque. That’s enough to send the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra from 0 to 100 km/h (0–62 mph) in just 1.89 seconds.

Interestingly, SU7 Ultra owners don’t get the full 1,527 hp right out of the box. By default, the car delivers around 888 hp (900 PS or 662 kW). To unlock the rest, drivers need to complete a qualifying lap on a Xiaomi-approved track. The car’s onboard Qualifying Mode logs and verifies the lap time, proving whether the driver can handle the extra power.

Hypercar Numbers, Mid-Range Price

Despite offering performance and specs that rival hypercars, the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra is surprisingly affordable. The performance flagship starts at ¥529,000 (about $73,600) in China, making it significantly less expensive than the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, which starts at ¥1,998,000 ($278,000) locally.

Shopping for a new car on a tight budget in the US often feels like choosing between a rock and a base-model hard place. At $18,000, your options are basically limited to something like the subcompact Nissan Versa or, if you’re lucky, a leftover 2024 Mitsubishi Mirage gathering dust on a dealer lot.

Take that same $18,000 across the Pacific to China, though, and suddenly you’re looking at an entirely different class of vehicle. One example? Toyota’s newly launched all-electric bZ5, a compact electric crossover priced from just 129,800 yuan, or roughly $18,100 at current exchange rates. That’s less than what many used five-year-old Corollas go for in the States.

It’s a shockingly low price for what appears to be a well-equipped compact crossover with modern tech and clean styling that doesn’t scream ‘budget car’ from across the parking lot.

First showcased last month but only just launched in China, the bZ5 is the production version of the bZ3C that was presented 12 months ago in Beijing. It has been brought to life through the FAW-Toyota joint venture and will be offered in four variants.

Under the hood – well, under the front panel, every version of the bZ5 come equipped with a front-mounted electric motor producing 200 kW (268 horsepower) and 330 Nm (243 lb-ft) of torque. Charging is handled via a 90 kW fast-charging system, which can take the battery from 30 to 80 percent in 27 minutes.

As for dimensions, the bZ5 measures 188.2 inches (4,780 mm) long, 73.5 inches (1,866 mm) wide, and 59.4 inches (1,510 mm) tall, with a wheelbase of 113.4 inches (2,880 mm). That makes it noticeably larger overall than the bZ4X that has been renamed to bZ in America, which measures 184.6 inches (4,690 mm) long, 73.2 inches (1,865 mm) wide, and 65.0 inches (1,650 mm) tall, with a 112.2-inch (2,850 mm) wheelbase.

Trim Levels, Pricing, and Range

Toyota hasn’t done something sneaky by introducing a bargain-basement entry-level version and then jacking the prices up significantly for higher-end models. In fact, the flagship version starts at just 159,800 yuan, or approximately $22,200.

Sitting at the base of the bZ5 family is the 550 Joy, priced from 129,800 yuan ($18,100). Right above it is the 550 Pro from 139,800 yuan ($19,400), the 550 Pro Smart Edition starting at 159,800 yuan (~$22,200), and the 630 Pro, which is also available from 159,800 yuan ($22,200). Both models use BYD’s Blade LFP battery packs.

The 550-branded models have a 65.28 kWh pack offering up 550 km (342 miles) of range, while the 630 Pro uses a 73.98 kWh pack good for 630 km (392 miles). Bear in mind, though, that these are figures from the generous CLTC cycle and probably won’t be quite as impressive in the real world.

Even so, for the money, there’s not much to complain about. Not only is the bZ5 cheap compared to what we pay here in the US for even the most basic of EVs, it also comfortably undercuts the Tesla Model Y in China. Despite being built locally, prices for it start at 263,500 yuan ($36,700), meaning you could buy two bZ5s for the price of one base RWD Model Y.

It’s not as though the Toyota is lacking in features either. It includes a Navigation on Autopilot system that uses 33 sensors, including a LiDAR in high-end models. There’s also a 10-speaker JBL audio system and a 15.6-inch infotainment display. Unlike the Model Y, there’s also a digital instrument cluster.
