One-Off Polestar Arctic Circle Edition Models Are Rally-Inspired EVs Ready For Action

  • Polestar has introduced Arctic Circle editions of the 2, 3, and 4 models.
  • The EVs ride on lifted suspensions with Ohlins dampers, and studded tires.
  • All three models were designed as one-offs, with no plans for production.

Three years after the Polestar 2 Arctic Circle one-off, the Swedish brand applied a similar treatment to the Polestar 3 and 4 models. The Arctic Circle collection is a lineup of rally-inspired EVs, featuring beefed-up suspensions, studded tires, and a bunch of cool accessories.

The one-offs were created at Polestar’s R&D facilities in Sweden. Their development was headed by Joakim Rydholm, ex-rally driver and current Head of Driving Dynamics at Polestar, who admitted that applying the Arctic Circle treatment to their electric SUVs was “a fun and challenging task”. Rydholm said that his team collaborated with their technology partners on “bespoke engineering solutions” that made the EVs “incredibly fun to drive”.

All three models feature upgraded suspension setups with 3-way adjustable Öhlins dampers and a front strut brace. The ground clearance has been increased between 20-40 mm (0.8-1.6 inches) depending on the EV. The OZ Racing alloy wheels (19-inch and 20-inch designs) are finished in white for a proper rally look, wrapped in studded Pirelli tires.

The exterior is finished in a cool white and yellow livery, combined with Stedi Quad Pro LEDs at the front, two hooks finished in Swedish gold, and a set of mud flaps. Furthermore, the company added Thule roof rails with a custom basket and an LED bar on the Polestar 3, ski mounts on the Polestar 4, and a combined setup on the Polestar 2.

Inside, the Recaro bucket seats are a common feature between the three modified EVs, while the sportier Polestar 4 adds the novelty of a drift-inspired hydraulic handbrake.

\\\\\\\\
\\\\\\\\

The EVs are based on the Long Range Dual motor trims of the models, fitted with the optional Performance Pack. The Polestar 2 produces 470 hp (350 kW / 476 PS) thanks to a software upgrade, while the Polestar 3 and 4 remain stock with 510 hp (380 kW / 517 PS) and 537 hp (400 kW / 544 PS) respectively.

The Polestar Arctic Circle Editions will make their first public outing at the 2025 FAT Ice Race in Zell am See, Austria, on February 1st.

Michael Lohscheller, Polestar’s new CEO, said: “The Arctic Circle collection illustrates our unique performance DNA, rooted in motorsport and combined with Scandinavian design. We develop our cars under challenging conditions within the Arctic Circle in Sweden, and at the FAT Ice Race we will showcase that on ice there is nothing better than a Polestar. We are really excited to be part of this special event with our full model line-up, where it’s all about car culture and the performance experience.”

While none of the models is destined for production, Polestar could use them as inspiration for future special editions. After all, this is exactly what happened with the Polestar 2 BST limited-production special a couple of years ago.

Renault Wants To Smash EV Range Records With New Retro-Futuristic Filante Prototype

  • Renault created an EV prototype destined to set a new record for the longest range.
  • The design of the retro-futuristic model is focused on aerodynamics and low weight.
  • The Renaut Filante Record 2025 will make a record attempt in the first half of 2025.

Renault has introduced a fully electric demo-car aiming to set records for power consumption and driving range. The Filante Record 2025 sports a retro-futuristic stance, inspired by record-breaking Renault prototypes from the past. At the same time, it incorporates the latest tech for optimum aerodynamics and lower weight, contributing to greater efficiency.

The French automaker describes the model as a “laboratory on wheels for testing new technologies, materials and innovations”. The Filante Record 2025 continues bloodline of speed-record prototypes from Renault such as the 40 CV des Records (1925), the Nervasport des Records (1934), and the Étoile Filante (1956). This time, however, the focus isn’t on top speed but on achieving the longest possible range on a single charge.

The project is the result of a collaboration between Renault and Ligier Automotive. The single-seater measures 5.12 m long and just 1.19 m tall, with a streamlined shape inspired by aeronautics. The design was based on numerical simulations, but engineers will carry out additional wind tunnel tests in spring 2025 for the final adjustments.

Features such as the round LED headlights, and the fin-shaped tail are clear nods to the past, as with the wheels which are separate from the body. The latter have been “carefully faired” with aero covers and sculpted fenders designed to minimize drag. Tires are said to influence range by around 20%, which is why Renault chose custom friction-reducing 19-inch rubber from Michelin.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
\\\\\\\

The futuristic cockpit is inspired by aviation and space travel, adopting an F1-style driving position. The unconventional steering wheel shaped like a gaming controller integrates all of the necessary functions and controls, benefiting from steer-by-wire and brake-by-wire technologies. The hammock-style seat is a stretched canvas supported by carbon blades, adapting to the body shape of the driver. Furthermore, the canopy opens together with the steering wheel, making it easier for the driver to climb inside.

Predictably, weight-saving measures have also played an important role in the development. The chassis is made of aluminium, carbon fiber, and steel, with engineers reducing the material use as much as possible. The team has also used Scalmalloy, an aluminum alloy specifically designed for 3D printing. As a result, the demo-car tips the scales at 1,000 kg (2,205 pounds), despite the fact that the battery alone weighs 600 kg (1,323 pounds).

The battery pack is mounted under the driver’s feet, with a capacity of 87 kWh, matching the production-spec Scenic E-Tech crossover. However, in order to fit in the ultra-low body of the Filante Record 2025, it features cell-to-pack technology, within a carbon casing. At the moment, there is no information on the electric motors or the performance specifications of the prototype.

The Filante Record 2025 will make its first public outing at the Rétromobile motor show in Paris on February 5. Renault said that the efficiency record attempt will take place in the first half of 2025, without setting a specific goal for the range figure. Finally, while the Filante Record 2025 will remain a one-off, the automaker claims it “previews a range of technologies that will be studied for use on tomorrow’s production vehicles.”

Toyota, Suzuki, And Daihatsu’s Electric Kei Vans Are Finally Launching This Year

  • Toyota, Suzuki, and Daihatsu will launch their electric kei vans this year in Japan.
  • The models are electric versions of the Toyota Pixis Van, Suzuki Every, and Daihatsu Hijet.
  • The triplets were shown in prototype form in 2023 when they were originally supposed to debut.

Japanese automakers Toyota, Suzuki, and Daihatsu have officially announced plans to introduce fully electric versions of their kei vans in the domestic market before the end of 2025, two years later than originally promised.

The electric versions of the Toyota Pixis Van, Suzuki Every, and Daihatsu Hijet were first shown in prototype form during the G7 Hiroshima Summit in 2023, the year they were supposed to hit the streets. The latest announcement doesn’t explain the delay, but it does confirm that all three models are finally on track for release this year.

More: Tiny Dakar Kei Truck Built Around A Suzuki Jimny Is Utterly Adorable

These EV kei vans share the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform, meaning they’re essentially the same vehicle underneath, with only branding and badging setting them apart. Visually, they’re nearly identical to their gas-powered counterparts, save for a charging port on the front bumper and—predictably—the lack of an exhaust pipe.

The EVs will be manufactured by Daihatsu, which also makes the existing ICE-powered versions. They will be powered by a “jointly developed BEV system”, combining “Suzuki and Daihatsu’s expertise in creating small-size cars with Toyota’s electrification technology”.

Performance details remain vague, as the automakers haven’t disclosed the electric motor’s output or battery capacity. However, they claim an estimated range of around 200 km (124 miles) per charge—better than the aging Mitsubishi Minicab MiEV 133 km (83 miles) but falling short of the Honda N-Van e:’s 245 km (152 miles).

For comparison, the current gasoline-powered kei vans use a 660cc engine, producing 46 hp (34 kW) in naturally aspirated form or 63 hp (47 kW) with a turbocharger. Whether the EV versions will offer more power or maintain the same cargo-hauling abilities remains to be seen.

The zero-emission versions of the mini-LCVs are designed as a last-mile delivery solution. The models will contribute to the companies’ efforts towards carbon neutrality, which is a shared goal among the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA).

Fiat Grande Panda Will Gain A 4×4 Version

  • Fiat CEO Olivier Francois has confirmed that a Grande Panda 4×4 version is on the way.
  • It will feature higher ground clearance, a more robust suspension, and off-road capabilities.
  • The company is weighing both traditional and electric all-wheel-drive powertrains for the 4×4.

Fiat is committed to continuing the legacy of the Panda 4×4, this time with a rugged version of the new Grande Panda. According to Fiat CEO Olivier Francois, the Grande Panda 4×4 is already in development, though whether it will feature an electric or hybrid powertrain remains undecided.

All three generations of the Fiat Panda were offered in 4×4 versions, enhancing the city car’s off-road capabilities. Fiat aims to bring this same versatility to the all-new Grande Panda, which competes in the supermini segment alongside the related Citroen C3.

More: A Reborn Fiat Coupe Would Still Turn Heads In 2025 As A Prelude Rival

When questioned by Autocar during a recent press event about the potential for a 4×4 model, Francois confirmed the news: “Yes, we are committed to doing something and are studying it,” he said. “We’re trying to find the solution and a way. The question is whether it should be an ICE 4×4 or an EV 4×4. We’re looking at solutions and how and when—but we get the point and would like to do something like it soon.”

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Currently, the Fiat Grande Panda is built on the Smart Car platform, which supports front-wheel drive only. This means Fiat engineers will need to modify the platform to accommodate all-wheel drive. One potential solution could be adding an extra electric motor to the rear axle, similar to what’s found in the mild-hybrid Jeep Avenger 4Xe and Alfa Romeo Junior Ibrida Q4. However, the ideal solution would be a more traditional 4WD system, much like those in previous Panda 4×4 models.

Should Fiat proceed with an AWD version of the Grande Panda, it will likely feature higher ground clearance and a more robust suspension setup to handle rougher terrain. This would make the 4×4 version stand out from the front-wheel-drive models, with additional rugged design elements to give it a more off-road capable appearance.

The Current Grande Panda Lineup

At this point, Fiat has shown off a couple of versions of the Grande Panda. The most notable are the Grande Panda RED trim, which sits on white 16-inch steel wheels, and the higher-spec Grande Panda La Prima, which features 17-inch wheels, aluminum-style skid plates, and roof rails, all contributing to a crossover-like stance. These features, paired with the boxy shape and plastic cladding, give the Grande Panda a distinctly rugged look.

More: 2027 Alfa Romeo Giulia Will Be A Crossover, Abandoning Its Sedan Roots

The Grande Panda is available in both electric and hybrid options. The EV features a 111-horsepower electric motor paired with a 44 kWh battery, offering a range of up to 320 km (199 miles) on the WLTP cycle. Meanwhile, the hybrid model combines a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine with a small electric motor, providing a combined output of 100 hp (75 kW / 102 PS) and a 48V battery.

Fiat has also confirmed plans to introduce a pure-ICE version of the Panda with a manual gearbox designed for emerging markets. Francois said that this model is expected to arrive in Europe “at some point”, likely serving as a budget alternative to the electrified versions which are the main focus of the Italian brand in the region.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

The Fiat Grande Panda starts at a reasonable price, with the entry-level mild-hybrid model available for less than €19,000 ($19,800), while the electric version begins below €25,000 ($26,000). The first deliveries of the Grande Panda are expected in European dealerships in March 2025.

It is safe to assume that the 4×4 version will be more expensive, justifying its position as the flagship trim of the future lineup. The company hasn’t set a target date for the launch of the Fiat Grande Panda 4×4, but the ongoing development suggests it will take a couple of years before we see it on the roads.

More Pandas On The Way

In addition to the Grande Panda, Olivier Francois also provided insight into other, larger Panda-themed concepts currently in development. These concepts will share the same Smart Car platform as the Grande Panda, with two models in the works. One of these is expected to be an SUV variant, likely competing with models such as the Citroen C3 Aircross and Opel Frontera.

According to the CEO, Fiat’s decision to return to the supermini segment with a “utility vehicle” like the Grande Panda, rather than a traditional hatchback like the now-discontinued Punto, was driven by the need for global appeal. The goal was to create a model that could reach beyond Europe. This approach is backed up by Fiat’s sales numbers, with Brazil accounting for nearly half of the 1.2 million registrations projected for 2024.

Alfa Romeo’s SUV Fixation Kills The Giulietta For Good

  • CEO Santo Ficili confirmed that the Giulietta won’t be getting a successor after all.
  • The company won’t re-enter the hatchback segment because customers prefer SUVs.
  • The Alfa Romeo Tonale serves as an indirect successor of the discontinued model.

Alfa Romeo has confirmed it won’t be introducing a new hatchback, with the Tonale being its sole model in the compact segment. The decision came straight from the company’s CEO, who revealed that the Giulietta will not be part of the brand’s future lineup, citing customer preferences towards SUVs.

This disappointing news for hatchback fans came directly from Santo Ficili, Alfa Romeo’s newly appointed CEO, during an interview with French outlet L’Argus. After sharing details about the upcoming Stelvio and Giulia models, Ficili put an end to the rumors about a new Giulietta. He explained, “Honestly, at the moment, I don’t see a future for a Giulietta because there is no demand for a compact sedan. Today, the Giulietta is the Tonale.”

More: 2027 Alfa Romeo Giulia Will Be A Crossover, Abandoning Its Sedan Roots

The Alfa Romeo boss admitted to being a fan of the nameplate, but pointed to market conditions as the reason for stepping away from the segment. ‘I’ve owned 20 Giuliettas in my life, and it’s a fantastic car, even now. But we have to follow market demand, and customers want SUVs. And we have to sell cars.”

The Giulietta name has a long history, first introduced as a 2+2 coupe back in 1954, followed by a four-door sedan and a roadster. The second generation, launched in 1977, was offered exclusively as a sedan, while the hatchback version (originally intended to adopt the Milano moniker) debuted in 2010. Production of the Giulietta hatchback lasted until 2020, but now it’s clear that Alfa Romeo is shifting its focus entirely to SUVs.

A new Giulietta would have competed with models like the BMW 1-Series, Audi A3, and Mercedes A-Class. However, with the latter soon to be discontinued, Alfa Romeo likely saw limited future in that market. Instead, the most realistic future for a compact Alfa would have involved the STLA Medium platform, allowing for both electric and hybrid powertrains. This platform is set to underpin many future models across Stellantis brands, helping to optimize manufacturing costs.

Still, with hatchbacks steadily losing ground to the far more popular SUVs, it was no surprise that a brand like Alfa Romeo would focus on more profitable segments. After all, the same shift happened with the discontinued Mito supermini, which was replaced by the Junior small SUV.

More: Alfa Romeo Scraps EV-Only Plan As Dealers Warn Of Sales Collapse

The Giulietta’s potential revival had been hinted at by former CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato, who suggested in 2023 that there might still be money to be made from hatchbacks. While this statement left a window of possibility for a new generation of the Giulietta, it is now clear that Alfa Romeo has lost interest in such an offering.

Under the strategy laid out by Imparato, Alfa Romeo plans to launch one new model every year. After the Tonale, Junior, Stelvio, and Giulia debut between 2023 and 2026, the brand is set to unveil a flagship SUV/crossover in 2027, specifically designed for the US market.

2027 BMW 3-Series: Everything We Know About The Neue Klasse

  • BMW is expected to unveil a new generation of the 3-Series sedan in 2026.
  • The Neue Klasse sedan will be available in ICE (3-Series) and EV (i3) derivatives.
  • Despite riding on different underpinnings, the models will look very similar.

Updated 1/28: We’ve included fresh renderings of the next iteration of the BMW 3 Series, along with all the latest intel and spy photos.

Sedans might not dominate sales charts like their SUV counterparts these days, but the 3-Series isn’t going anywhere. This compact executive sedan remains a cornerstone of BMW’s lineup, carrying a legacy that’s been around for half a century. Now, the 3-Series is gearing up for its next chapter, with a new generation set to launch in 2026, and it’s coming in two distinct flavors: all-electric and internal combustion.

If that sounds familiar, it’s because BMW’s been work-shopping this approach with their bigger sedans, the i5/5-Series and i7/7-Series. The 3-Series (and its electric twin, the i3 sedan) will follow a similar playbook, giving buyers the choice between old-school horsepower and cutting-edge electric performance.

More: BMW Almost Launched An All-Electric Hypercar With 1,300 HP

Recent spy shots of prototypes have revealed both gas-powered and fully electric versions of the next-gen 3-Series. While both share the “Neue Klasse” design language, the differences in proportions are telling. The ICE prototypes feature a slightly longer hood, a sharper dash-to-axle ratio, and a more upright windshield. These elements combined make it look less like a complete EV-inspired redesign and more like an extensively reworked version of the current G20-generation BMW 3-Series.

The spy photos have sparked the imagination of digital artists Theottle and Kelsonic, who have created renderings of the upcoming BMW 3-Series, offering an early glimpse of its potential exterior design.

\\\\

A Shark Nose With Bite

BMW’s signature shark-nose styling makes a return here, sharpening the sedan’s sporty stance. The effect is further bolstered by a deeper, more aggressive front bumper and subtly flared fenders that add muscle without overindulging. Flush door handles bring the styling in line with BMW’s latest clean-surfaced aesthetic, while the greenhouse and Hofmeister kink stay intact—thankfully, some traditions are non-negotiable.

With the rear end of the prototypes using provisional taillights, we have to use our imagination to fill the gaps. Theottle’s rendering is inspired by the Vision Neue Klasse concept from 2023, featuring a full-width taillight cluster with modern LED graphics. On the other hand, Kelsonik’s take mimics the slimmer LEDs of the 5-Series.

Further down, the rendering artists designed distinct bumpers inspired by styling cues from the BMW M division. This aligns with earlier prototype sightings, which featured sporty alloy wheels, larger brakes, and M-style quad tailpipes.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

The BMW i3 Neue Klasse sedan (Photos: SH Proshots)

While we have yet to get a glimpse of the 3-Series prototype’s interior during development testing, we have a pretty good idea of what to expect. BMW recently introduced the Panoramic iDrive system at CES, and it’s expected to trickle into the new model.

The centerpiece of the new setup is an expansive pillar-to-pillar display mounted at the base of the windscreen. This customizable screen is divided into three sections and is complemented by a secondary infotainment touchscreen positioned lower on the dashboard.

Two Platforms, Two Paths

Unlike the i5/5-Series and i7/7-Series, where BMW paired EVs and ICE models on the same platform, the i3 and 3-Series are believed to head down different paths. The all-electric i3 sedan will ride on the Neue Klasse architecture, shared with the upcoming iX3 SUV, while the combustion-powered 3-Series will reportedly stick to the CLAR platform, which also underpins the forthcoming G45 X3. This would explain the differences in proportions and styling details we see in the i3 and ICE 3-Series prototypes here.

Based on what we’ve seen with the mechanically related X3, the next-gen 3-Series will likely offer mild-hybrid versions of BMW’s proven engines: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a 3.0-liter inline-six, both upgraded for better horsepower and fuel economy.

A Mild-Hybrid M3 Is In The Cards

Interestingly, even the mighty M3 isn’t immune to electrification. However, as BMW officials told us in a recent trip, the next M3 will forego the heavy plug-in hybrid setup of the M5 and instead adopt a lighter mild-hybrid system. Meanwhile, for those tracking BMW’s EV ambitions, an all-electric quad-motor equivalent of the M3 is already under development, promising tire-melting lunacy for the brave few.

The current G20-generation BMW 3-Series first graced the stage in 2018, with minor facelifts arriving in 2022 and 2024. If BMW sticks to its usual timeline, this heavily updated version—complete with “new generation” branding and styling, will likely hit the streets in 2026, alongside its fully electric Neue Klasse sibling, the i3 sedan.

Chevrolet Spark Returns As A Rebadged Chinese EV For South America

  • Chevrolet unveiled the new Spark EUV during a special event in Brazil.
  • The electric SUV is essentially a rebadged Baojun Yep Plus from China.
  • It will likely share the same specs, offering an affordable price tag.

Chevrolet has found a clever (read: cost-effective) way to make the most of its SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture by rebadging one of China’s most charming EVs, the Baojun Yep Plus. This fully electric urban SUV made an unexpected debut during a special event celebrating Chevrolet’s 100th anniversary in the Brazilian market.

The new model, set to be sold in Brazil as the Chevrolet Spark EUV, is essentially a Baojun Yep Plus with a Chevy badge stuck on the grille—no other major changes to speak of. Despite sharing a name and compact proportions, the Spark EUV has absolutely nothing in common with the Spark EV, Chevrolet’s short-lived electric hatchback sold in select states in the US from 2013 to 2017 before being phased out for the Bolt.

More: 12-Year Old Chevrolet Trailblazer Receives Another Facelift In Brazil

While GM hasn’t revealed the full specs or a launch timeline for the Spark EUV, the announcement did come with a broader promise: the company plans to introduce 10 new models to the Brazilian market by 2025, with five of them categorized as “major” launches. The Spark EUV, given its potential appeal and positioning, is likely one of the more significant additions.

Chevrolet Spark Returns As A Rebadged Chinese EV For South America

Based on the dimensions of the Baojun Yep Plus at 3,996 mm (157.3 inches) long with a 2,560 mm (100.8 inches) wheelbase, the Spark EUV will take the crown as Chevrolet’s smallest offering. While the Baojun Yep Plus lineup includes a five-door version, a three-door variant, and even a pickup concept, it’s unclear if Chevrolet plans to bring any of these alternative body styles to the Brazilian market alongside the rebadged model.

Chances are that the Spark EUV will borrow its powertrain directly from the Chinese-spec Baojun Yep Plus, which features a rear-mounted electric motor delivering 101 hp (75 kW / 102 PS) and a 41.9 kWh battery pack. This setup offers a respectable 401 km (249 miles) of range on China’s CLTC cycle.

More: China-Made 2024 Chevrolet Aveo Unveiled In Mexico

Inside, the Baojun Yep Plus features a modern digital cockpit with dual 10.2-inch displays and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) developed by none other than drone-maker DJI. The addition of an extra set of doors and a roomier four-seat cabin makes the Yep Plus significantly more practical than its smaller sibling, broadening its appeal to a wider range of buyers.

Perhaps the most compelling aspect of this tiny off-roader is its affordability. While Chevrolet hasn’t revealed Brazilian pricing yet, the identical Baojun Yep Plus starts at just ¥93,800 (around $12,900) in China.

In addition to unveiling the Chevrolet Spark EUV, the company also announced a 100th Anniversary Special Series trim for the Onix, Tracker, and S10, an exclusive lineup designed specifically for the Brazilian market.

Note: Our lead photo shows a Baojun Yep Plus with a photoshopped Chevrolet badge. Official images of the Spark EUV haven’t been released yet, but the model did make its debut at the recent event, as seen in the video below.

2027 Alfa Romeo Giulia Will Be A Crossover, Abandoning Its Sedan Roots

  • Alfa Romeo’s new CEO confirms the next-gen Giulia will adopt a completely new bodystyle.
  • The sedan will morph into a crossover, sharing its STLA Large platform with the next Stelvio.
  • The Giulia will feature advanced infotainment, AI integration, and a more sophisticated ADAS suite.

The Alfa Romeo Giulia is set for a major transformation, shifting from its classic sedan form to an all-new crossover design. Sharing its platform with the new Stelvio SUV that’s expected later this year, the next-generation Giulia will feature a more advanced interior, AI-powered tech, and upgraded driver-assistance systems. With the designs for both models now finalized, Alfa Romeo’s CEO has confirmed the Giulia’s new direction.

More: Alfa Romeo Scraps EV-Only Plan As Dealers Warn Of Sales Collapse

Santo Ficili, Alfa Romeo’s new CEO (also overseeing Maserati), spilled the beans in an interview with French outlet L’Argus. Ficili confirmed that the Giulia will embrace “a new design and a new type of bodywork.” While he kept the details vague, he said that the next Giulia will continue to share its platform with the Stelvio, leaving the rest to our imaginations. “So you can imagine what kind of vehicle we will offer,” Ficili added, subtly pointing toward a more elevated and SUV-like stance for the future Giulia.

Fastback Crossover Vibes

Don’t expect a traditional crossover, though. Instead, imagine the sleeker fastback designs we’ve recently seen from other Stellantis brands in Europe. Yes, it’s a bit confusing—welcome to the ever-expanding multiverse of crossovers and SUVs we live in.

According to sources, the Giulia will follow suit with a streamlined silhouette reminiscent of the DS No8, Peugeot 408, Citroen C5 X, and the upcoming Lancia Gamma. Essentially, Alfa Romeo isn’t abandoning its signature style, but it is swapping its sharp-edged sedan roots for something more aligned with today’s crossover-loving crowd.

Meanwhile, Alfa’s design evolution will keep moving forward. Design boss Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos previously revealed that all future models will forgo the quirky, off-center license plate placement, courtesy of modern pedestrian safety regulations.

Additionally, the Giulia and Stelvio will sport an updated version of the iconic scudetto grille, which now doubles as an EV-friendly canvas for showcasing the Alfa Romeo emblem’s graphics, as seen on the Junior. The automaker has previously teased the taillight signature of the Stelvio, which echoes the triangular shape of the scudetto, tying the front and rear aesthetics together.

Both the Stelvio and Giulia are set to embrace more cutting-edge interiors, featuring an advanced AI-infused infotainment system and a more refined ADAS suite to boost their autonomous driving capabilities.

STLA Large Underpinnings, EV And Hybrid Options

Unlike the DS No8 and Lancia Gamma crossover fastbacks, which are built on the STLA Medium platform, the new Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio will upgrade to the larger STLA Large architecture, also used in the latest Dodge Charger. However, Alfa Romeo’s CEO has assured that the Italian models will feature a unique setup, noting that the brand’s engineers have “changed things” to distinguish them from the American muscle car.

The 2026 Alfa Romeo Stelvio will be the first European model to utilize the STLA Large platform. Discussing the powertrain lineup for the upcoming SUV, CEO Santo Ficili stated, “To date, the new Stelvio is only planned to be 100% electric. But we are also working on hybrid versions.” While Ficili didn’t provide details about the Giulia, it’s reasonable to expect that the crossover will follow suit with both EV and hybrid options.

Review: Our Alfa Romeo Tonale Tributo Italiano Tester Costs $60,000

This multi-energy strategy aligns with recent news that Alfa Romeo has abandoned its plans to transition into an EV-only automaker. The decision follows a similar shift by other Stellantis brands, including Lancia, signaling a broader move toward flexibility in powertrain offerings.

The Cassino plant in Italy will continue to serve as the production hub for both the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio. The first units of the Stelvio SUV are expected to roll off the assembly line in July 2025, following its rumored spring debut and ahead of its market launch later that year. Meanwhile, the Giulia crossover is likely to make its debut sometime in 2026.

Genesis Goes EV-Only In The UK, But Hybrids Are Coming

  • Genesis’ EV-only UK lineup comprises the GV60, the Electrified GV70, and the Electrified GV80.
  • The gas and diesel offerings are being offered from stock, but some are already selling out.
  • Still, the company has confirmed that hybrid models will join the UK lineup in the future.

Genesis has axed all ICE-powered models from its UK lineup, with the goal of becoming a “fully electrified brand” within 2025. Setting aside the remaining stock of ICE offerings, the Korean brand has a range of three EVs, that will be joined by hybrids in the future.

Starting with the discontinued models, Genesis said that the G70 sedan, G70 Shooting Brake, GV70, and GV80 with gasoline and diesel powertrains are now sold from stock, although, according to the company, some of them are “already selling out”. Once these examples are gone, UK buyers will only have access to a trio of EVs.

Alfa Romeo Scraps EV-Only Plan As Dealers Warn Of Sales Collapse

  • Alfa Romeo’s US boss confirmed a shift from an EV-only plan to a “multi-energy” strategy.
  • Earlier reports indicated ICE-powered versions of the next-gen Giulia and Stelvio models.
  • North American dealers express concern over the viability of their network amid declining sales.

Alfa Romeo has become the latest automaker to pump the brakes on its EV-only ambitions, opting for a new “multi-energy” strategy instead. This shift comes as the brand struggles to revive its North American dealer network, which has been severely impacted by sluggish sales.

Chris Feuell, the recently appointed head of Alfa Romeo North America, confirmed the pivot, noting that the change was made within the past month. “The biggest thing in our product and technology roadmap is transitioning from what was a BEV-only strategy for Alfa to one that is multi-energy,” Feuell explained.

Read: Did Alfa Romeo Just Tease The Next Stelvio?

The Italian marque, part of the Stellantis group, had previously aimed for an all-electric lineup by 2027, with the 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale slated as the last gas-powered model. However, plans for the next-generation Stelvio SUV and Giulia sedan, originally intended as EVs, are now being revised to include hybrid and internal combustion engine variants. Both models will be built on Stellantis’ STLA Large platform, the same architecture underpinning the Dodge Charger.

US Dealers Are Concerned

After meeting with Alfa Romeo dealers at the NADA Show on January 26, Feuell acknowledged the challenges of maintaining a BEV-only lineup. “We’ve got 110 dealers in our U.S. network, and it would be very challenging for them to survive with a BEV-only portfolio,” he told Auto News.

Feuell admitted that the biggest concern among U.S. dealers is the viability of the Alfa Romeo network, with sales dropping 19 percent in 2024 to 8,865 units, marking the fourth consecutive year of decline. The situation was even worse in the fourth quarter of 2024, when the Italian brand saw a 38 percent drop compared to the same period in 2023.

Big Incentives For Leftover 2024MYs

As a result, the US boss revealed that 2024 models currently make up half of Alfa Romeo’s U.S. inventory. To clear out the remaining stock by the end of Q1 2025, the company is offering substantial incentives to attract prospective buyers.

Feuell stated that she was “very transparent” with dealers regarding the operational and financial performance of the network. She warned, “If we replicate what happened in 2024, we’ll lose a lot of dealers, and we need to rebuild the network rather than deplete it. We’re down to 110 dealers from where we were at 150.”

More: Alfa Romeo Introduces Entry-Level Tonale For Under $37k

According to Feuell, the top priority for rebuilding the dealer network is “getting the sales back on track and improving some of the quality issues that we’ve had in the product, so they can shift away from a very high mix of warranty repairs back into customer-pay maintenance and light repair work.”

Another topic raised during the dealer meeting was whether Alfa Romeo should introduce the subcompact Junior to the U.S. market. While Feuell sought dealer input, she declined to share the outcome of those discussions. Interestingly, Jeep is also contemplating whether to bring the Junior’s Avenger cousin to North America as well.

Tesla Hits Canadian Buyers With Massive Price Hikes Of Up To CA$9,000

  • Most Tesla models in Canada will see hefty price increases starting February 1.
  • Prices will rise by CA$ 4,000-9,000 (US$2,800-6,300) depending on the model.
  • The hikes may be tied to an impending tariff standoff between Canada and the U.S.

Tesla has just delivered some unwelcome news for Canadian buyers—steep price hikes are coming across nearly its entire lineup. The sharpest increase targets the Model 3 Performance, which will soon cost CA$9,000 (equal to US$6,200 at current exchange rates) more. Curiously, the Cybertruck remains the lone Tesla unaffected by these changes.

The updated prices, now reflected on Tesla’s Canadian website, will officially take effect on February 1, 2025. For prospective buyers, this means there’s a tight window to lock in current prices before the increases hit.

A Closer Look at the Price Hikes

The Model 3 takes the brunt of these adjustments, with price increases ranging from CA$4,000 to CA$9,000 (US$2,800 to US$6,300) depending on the trim. For example, the cost of the Model 3 Performance will rise from CA$70,990 (US$49,400) to a hefty CA$79,990 (US$55,600).

Meanwhile, the Model Y, Model S, and Model X are set to experience a flat CA$4,000 (US$2,800) increase across all trims. Despite these adjustments, the Cybertruck maintains its current pricing, with the top-tier “Cyberbeast” model remaining Tesla’s most expensive offering at CA$165,990 (US$115,400).

What’s Behind the Price Changes?

Tesla hasn’t offered a direct explanation for the price increases, but the February 1 date coincides with U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed 25% tariff on Canadian goods entering the U.S. starting that same day. In response, the Canadian government has indicated plans to impose similar tariffs on U.S. imports. Whether Tesla’s timing is a preemptive move or mere coincidence remains unclear.

As reported by local website Drive Tesla Canada, Tesla increased prices of all Model 3 and Model Y trims by CA$1,000 (US$ 700) just over a week ago. Furthermore, Canada’s federal incentive program that slashed EV prices by CA$ 5,000 (US$ 3,500) has been discontinued, although the increased prices of Tesla models would make them ineligible anyway.

Vauxhall Vivaro GS Proves Even Vans Want To Look Cool Now

  • The GS trim adds a cool bodykit and 18-inch wheels to the Vauxhall Vivaro LCV.
  • The van is available with electric and diesel powertrains, producing up to 178 hp.
  • The sporty looks are combined with a nicer interior featuring eco-leather seats.

Vans are no longer just the humble workhorses of the road—they’ve been hitting the gym and trading in their steel-toed boots for a pair of sportier sneakers. Opel’s British arm, Vauxhall, has introduced a GS trim for the facelifted Vivaro, bringing fresh styling and interior upgrades to the table. This sporty-looking LCV is available with both turbodiesel and fully electric powertrains, with the diesel option offering the most muscle.

The GS trim was first introduced in 2022 as part of Vauxhall’s response to the growing demand for sportier vans in the UK. Now, it returns as part of the facelifted Vivaro lineup, competing with similar offerings like the Ford Transit Custom MS-RT.

More: Stellantis To Convert Used Diesel Vans To Electric For Less Than €20k

The GS trim gives the Vivaro a more aggressive appearance thanks to a bespoke bodykit. This includes an aerodynamic front bumper extension, side skirts with integrated front mudflaps, a reworked rear bumper, and a piano-black roof spoiler. It also rides on newly designed black 18-inch Y-spoke alloy wheels and features the GS emblem prominently on the tailgate. The trim is available in two paint colors named Quartz Silver and Mercury Grey, and comes in both Panel Van and Doublecab body styles.

While the styling components are likely compatible with other Stellantis van models, such as those from Citroen, Peugeot, and Fiat, the GS trim remains exclusive to the UK-spec Vauxhall Vivaro for now.

Inside, the seats are upholstered in a tear-resistant “hand-crafted eco-leather” material with the GS logo on the seatbacks and red contrasting stitching. Equipment includes an infotainment system with a 10-inch touchscreen display, dual-zone climate control, wireless charging, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, a heated steering wheel, and a heated driver’s seat.

Powertrain Options: Diesel or Electric

Under the hood, the Vivaro GS offers a choice of three powertrains. On the diesel side, there’s a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine available in two outputs: 143 hp (107 kW / 145 PS) paired with a five-speed manual transmission or 178 hp (132 kW / 180 PS) mated to an eight-speed automatic. The latter option is the most powerful diesel variant in the Vivaro lineup, though it doesn’t come with any chassis upgrades.

For those considering the electric option, the Vivaro Electric GS is equipped with a single electric motor producing 134 hp (100 kW / 136 PS) rather than the newer and more powerful setup found in other Stellantis EVs. It’s powered by a 50-kWh battery pack, providing a WLTP-certified range of up to 209 miles on a full charge.

The Vauxhall Vivaro GS is now on sale in the UK. Pricing starts at £39,990 ($49,500) for the diesel version and £48,940 ($60,500) for the electric model. These prices exclude taxes but include the UK Government’s Plug-in Van Grant for the electric version.

Stellantis’ DS Wants To Rival Rolls-Royce And Bentley After Failing To Rival BMW And Audi

  • DS takes more inspiration from Bentley than Audi, according to design chief Thierry Metroz.
  • Stellantis’ DS brand plans to go “beyond premium” as it aims to break into the luxury segment.
  • It says the No8’s interior reflects this ambition, emphasizing high-quality materials and craftsmanship.

It’s not every day you hear about a Stellantis-owned offshoot of Citroen aspiring to rub shoulders with the likes of Bentley and Rolls-Royce, but DS Automobiles seems undeterred by the challenge. The French company, still finding its footing, believes it can leap from its near-premium status to true luxury territory reserved for brands with decades of pedigree. Thierry Metroz, the company’s design chief, even compared their aspirations to become the “Louis Vuitton of the automotive world.”

A Tough Sale

For some context, DS has spent the better part of 15 years struggling to make any meaningful impact in the premium market, let alone pose a threat to Germany’s establishment. Launched in 2009 as a Citroen sub-brand before going independent in 2014, it has yet to gain any significant traction. The numbers tell the story: in 2022, DS sales fell by 22%, with just 37,480 cars sold across Europe.

More: DS No8 Breaks Cover As The New French Electric Flagship

To put that into perspective, Lexus, a brand Europeans are notoriously indifferent toward, sold more than double that at 77,306 units. Even Lancia, another Stellantis-owned brand that’s surviving on life support with a single Ypsilon model sold only in a handful of markets, came alarmingly close with 32,649 cars.

Ironically, DS’s sales are closer in scale to more boutique luxury brands like Rolls-Royce and Bentley than to mass-market premium names like Audi or BMW. And yet, that’s not discouraging the French brand from setting its sights even higher, with its design chief stating that the brand is targeting a move into the ultra-luxury sphere. He says this ambition is embodied in the No8 crossover, which he claims draws inspiration from Bentley’s craftsmanship and showcases the brand’s dedication to quality over quantity.

With its latest product, DS believes it is on par with premium rivals like Audi, Mercedes, and BMW. Still, the ultimate goal of the Stellantis brand is to eventually step into the ultra-luxury segment, which is currently occupied by industry heavyweights such as Bentley, Maybach, and Rolls-Royce. If this strategy feels like déjà vu, that’s because Jaguar is aiming for the exact same thing.

The “Louis Vuitton of Cars”?

Thierry Metroz elaborated on this vision during an interview with Autocar at the Brussels Motor Show. “We are premium, but our mission is to be more than premium. We would like to try to touch the luxury feeling”. He went on to frame DS’s ambitions in fashion terms, describing the brand’s dream of becoming the “Louis Vuitton of the automotive industry.”

Metroz is particularly proud of the DS No8’s interior, which he claims stands out from competitors. “It’s a very luxurious interior. Compared to our German competitors, it’s about the quality of the materials and the details of the interior. It’s a luxury taste. It’s not German for the interior – it’s more like Bentley. It’s not Bentley, of course, but the kind of inspiration is more Bentley or Rolls-Royce than Audi or Volkswagen.”

\\\\\\\

Despite these lofty claims, Metroz is realistic about the hurdles ahead. “It’s a lot of work, as the brand is very young. We only launched the brand in 2014. It probably takes more than 10 years, maybe 20 years to have the positioning of a luxury automotive brand.”

Metroz thinks that in order to move forward, DS needs to be “very focused on the quality of the details”. When asked if the so-called “luxury feel” could be achieved by using shared Stellantis underpinnings, the designer admitted it is “hard”. However, he said that DS can still change “key parts” and improve their models’ proportions, by lowering the roofline and pushing back the windscreen.

More: DS4 Grabs Facelift Ideas, And Probably A Name, From No8 Electric Flagship

Before Tavares stepped down as CEO of Stellantis, reports emerged that the group would review its entire brand portfolio by 2026, leaving no brand with guaranteed long-term funding. Despite the pressure to prove its worth within the next few years, DS Automobiles remains unfocused on boosting sales volume. As the company puts it: “We need to sell cars, like any brand, but our target is not to sell a lot of cars—we prefer to reinforce the positioning of the brand with the luxury feeling.”

The DS No8 Leads The Way For The Future Lineup

The DS No8 is just the beginning, according to Metroz. Future models, including the successor to the DS 7 and the facelifted DS 4, will carry “the same spirit” as the No8. These upcoming vehicles, likely to be rebranded as the DS No7 and DS No4, will emphasize bold designs intended to stand out in an increasingly crowded EV market.

Metroz also took a jab at Chinese automakers, accusing them of copying designs from brands like Porsche and Tesla. “DS wants something stronger in terms of styling,” he said, emphasizing that unique, character-rich designs will be central to the brand’s identity. He believes that while consumers are ready to adopt EVs, they want cars with a “very attractive design and a lot of character.”

Tata’s Weird Micro LCV Is Back With A New Face And EV Option

  • Tata has introduced the new Ace Pro, a tiny LCV truck designed for last-mile deliveries.
  • The model looks like an evolution of the Tata Ace Zip, retaining its cab-over styling.
  • The Ace Pro EV is joined by a Bi-Fuel version that can run on gasoline and CNG.

Tata’s presence at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Global Expo was highlighted by the debuts of the new Sierra SUV, and the sleek Avinya Concept X, but the stand included another interesting product. The Tata Ace Pro is a micro LCV designed for last-mile delivery applications, offering a choice between electric and bi-fuel powertrain options.

The cab-over styling of the new Tata Ace Pro might ring a bell to LCV enthusiasts – if there is such a niche group among us. The new model appears to be a heavily updated version of the Tata Ace Zip and Magic Iris that debuted in 2010. The Ace Zip truck was a four-wheeler alternative to Indian tricycles, but most of us remember it for its weird proportions, even more evident in the Magic Iris passenger van.

The new Ace Pro shares the cabin structure, greenhouse, and doors with its predecessor, but the face has been redesigned. A pair of round halogen headlights with body-colored garnish are connected through a black trim piece, while the bumper houses a small intake and round indicators. The little truck rides on 12-inch steelies, and has a slightly longer wheelbase of 1,800 mm (70.9 inches).

Inside, the dashboard looks familiar, but the layout is slightly less spartan than before. A 7-inch infotainment touchscreen is mounted on top of the center console, joined by a small digital instrument cluster. The center console is also home to a few buttons and a circular knob for the gearbox. The Tata EV’s equipment also includes a few basic ADAS.

Tata’s Weird Micro LCV Is Back With A New Face And EV Option
The Tata Ace Zip and Magic Iris that debuted in 2010.

Despite the notable visual similarities with the Ace Zip, Tata claims that the Ace Pro EV rides on a new and “unique” modular architecture. A single electric motor generates 104 Nm (76.7 lb-ft) of torque, allowing a maximum payload of 750 kg (1,653 pounds). Furthermore, the 14.4 kWh battery pack is good for over 155 km (96 miles) of range between charges, with the help of regenerative braking.

For those after a micro LCV that can cover longer distances, Tata has also introduced the Ace Pro Bi-Fuel version. This one is fitted with a mid-mounted 694cc two-cylinder engine that can run on both CNG and gasoline, offering a combined range of 280 km (174 miles) between refueling stops. The output of the combustion engine is limited to 26 hp and 51 Nm (38 lb-ft) of torque. Still, it represents a healthy increase over the 11 hp from the 611 cc gasoline engine of the Tata Ace Zip.

Tata has yet to announce the market launch date and pricing of the Ace Pro EV and Ace Pro Bi-Fuel but is already accepting applications of interest in India.

UK Police Seize A Cybertruck That Shouldn’t Be There

  • Greater Manchester Police impounded a Cybertruck for violating UK road safety regulations.
  • The electric truck was driven by a UK resident but it was registered and insured abroad.
  • Police cited safety risks to other road users in the event of an accident involving the pickup.

A Tesla Cybertruck was impounded last night in the UK after police deemed it illegal for street use. While the electric pickup isn’t officially offered by Tesla in the UK or Europe, that hasn’t stopped several determined owners from shipping them across the Atlantic and attempting to modify them for local compliance.

However, many of those owners are now learning the hard way that meeting local regulations takes more than a few questionable aftermarket tweaks, like slapping on some rubber edges.

More: Cybertruck Attack Exposes Chilling Truth About How Much Cars Spy On Us

The Cybertruck in question was intercepted by the Greater Manchester Police’s (GMP) Transport Unit in the town of Whitefield, on Thursday night. From the outside, the truck looked nearly identical to its US-spec counterparts, save for a matte black wrap and a roof-mounted LED bar. However, appearances only go so far when it comes to UK regulations, which are evidently stricter when it comes to vehicle safety compliance.

According to a police statement shared on social media, the driver was a permanent UK resident, but the truck was “registered and insured abroad”, a big no-no under British law. The police also noted that the Cybertruck lacks a certificate of conformity, essentially a stamp of approval that says a car meets local safety standards. They further raised “legitimate concerns around the safety of other road users or pedestrians” in the event of an accident.

Impound Under the Road Traffic Act

As a result of these violations, the Cybertruck was “subsequently seized under S165 of the Road Traffic Act and the driver reported” with the driver formally reported for the infraction. For now, the truck is in custody, parked somewhere alongside confiscated mopeds, dubious kit cars, and whatever else finds its way into the police impound lot.

One of the few Cybertruck owners in the UK is Yianni Charalambous, known for his YouTube channel and car-wrapping business, Yiannimize, as well as his appearances in many Carwow videos. His Cybertruck, originally purchased with Albanian plates, but Yianni says he’s currently trying to get it registered in the UK.

More: Even With Rubber Edges, Critics Want Tesla’s Cybertruck Off Europe’s Roads

To comply with local legislation, Yianni’s Cybertruck has been fitted with rubber moldings to soften its sharp edges, as well as yellow indicators on the headlights, taillights, and mirror caps. In addition, the side indicators have been masked, and rear fog lights installed, complete with a dedicated on/off switch.

Whether Yiannimize’s Tesla Cybertruck will receive approval from UK authorities remains uncertain—its excessive weight could still be a dealbreaker. In any case, anyone daring to drive a Cybertruck on this side of the Atlantic should prepare for the possibility of their EV being impounded during a routine police check.

New Gas-Powered Macan Back On The Table As Porsche Rethinks EVs

  • The Porsche Macan EV could be joined by a new ICE-powered Macan.
  • Other models that were initially planned as EVs might gain ICE or hybrid options.
  • The uncertainty around EV demand is what caused Porsche to rethink its plans.

Porsche is rethinking its all-electric future, considering hybrid and internal combustion engine (ICE) options for models originally planned as EVs. Concerns over the volatility of the EV market are driving this shift, with insider sources hinting that a new ICE-powered Macan might join the lineup alongside the fully electric version, which debuted last year.

More: Porsche Buyers Snap Up Gas-Powered 718s Like It’s 1999 As Taycan Sales Tank

Lutz Meschke, Porsche’s Chief Financial Officer, confirmed this pivot in strategy, stating, “We are exploring the possibility of equipping some of the originally planned electric models with hybrid drives or internal combustion engines in the future. Conceptual decisions are being made, but what is clear is that we are committed to the combustion engine for much longer.”

A Possible Return for the ICE Macan

Porsche insiders speaking to Autocar revealed that senior executives are considering reversing their decision to phase out the ICE Macan entirely. A new gas-powered version of the popular SUV could soon become a reality as part of Porsche’s exploration of a “range of product scenarios.”

Despite the warm reception of the Macan EV with 18,278 units sold in Q4 2024, accounting for 66% of the model’s total sales that year, the automaker is cautious. The EV market’s unpredictability has them hedging their bets, especially as sales of the Taycan, Porsche’s other flagship EV, have slumped.

Once the highlight in Porsche’s EV portfolio, the Taycan saw a sharp 49% sales decline in 2024, moving just 20,836 units compared to 2023. Porsche attributed the drop to the recent introduction of the Taycan’s facelifted version, but the drop has raised broader concerns about the long-term sustainability of EV demand.

New Gas-Powered Macan Back On The Table As Porsche Rethinks EVs

“The reception to the new Macan EV has been positive, but we are yet to see its long-term performance given uncertain market conditions,” an unnamed Porsche insider told Autocar. “The downturn in Taycan sales highlights new market dynamics. We cannot rely solely on traditional assumptions about consumer behavior.”

The ICE Macan, originally introduced in 2013 and refreshed in 2019 and 2021, has long been one of Porsche’s best sellers. With over 500,000 units sold globally since launch, it remains a cornerstone of the brand’s success alongside the larger Cayenne.

Cybersecurity regulations forced the automaker to axe the aging Macan from its European lineup in April 2024. While the the ICE-powered Macan will remain on sale for the “foreseeable future” in other markets including North America, an updated version would certainly help boost sales and potentially mark its return in the Old Continent.

If Porsche does reintroduce the ICE Macan, it would be following the lead of fellow Volkswagen Group brand Audi. The German automaker recently unveiled an updated ICE-powered Q5 to complement its fully electric Q6 e-tron. Audi is using the same PPC (Premium Platform Combustion) architecture to underpin new combustion-powered models across its lineup.

Rethinking The EV Strategy

New Gas-Powered Macan Back On The Table As Porsche Rethinks EVs
2025 Porsche Taycan Turbo GT

According to the report, plummeting Taycan sales have forced Porsche to scale back production of the EV and even consider pulling it from its main Stuttgart factory, a move that could potentially result in job cuts. While Porsche once aimed for EVs to make up 80% of its global sales by 2030, that target has now been quietly shelved.

In terms of additional EV models, a fully electric Porsche Cayenne is under development and could arrive in late 2025 or early 2025. However, the company has also pledged to keep the ICE and hybrid versions alive beyond 2030 with another facelift, giving its customers a wide range of options to choose from.

Finally, the electric successor of the 718 family has been reportedly delayed, following the recent bankruptcy of battery supplier Northvolt. As a result, Porsche could further extend the lifecycle of the aging 718 Boxster and Cayman, which remain popular judging from the 15% sales increase of 2024 (23,670 units).

Chinese SUV Beats Porsche Macan To Become Euro NCAP’s Safest EV In 2024

  • The Zeekr X had the highest Euro NCAP score among EVs and small SUVs tested in 2024.
  • The Mercedes-Benz E-Class executive sedan was the best performer overall for the past year.
  • Other best-in-class winners include the Mazda CX-80, and the VW Passat/Skoda Superb twins.

Chinese automakers have been quietly leveling up for years, and nowhere is this more evident than in the world of electric vehicles. Over the past decade, they’ve made serious strides in build quality, design, performance, and safety, culminating in their showing at the Euro NCAP’s “Best in Class” awards for 2024.

Small SUVs dominate Europe’s car market, so it’s no surprise that the category accounted for 20 of the 44 cars tested by Euro NCAP in 2024. Among them, Geely’s Zeekr X not only outclassed competitors from legacy European brands but also snagged the title of the safest EV of the year.

For context, the Zeekr X’s safety performance put it ahead of rivals like the Deepal S07, the Porsche Macan EV, the Cupra Tavascan, the MG HS, the Toyota C-HR, the Volvo EX30, and the Xpeng G6.

Despite the strong showing from Chinese EVs, the top performer for 2024 was none other than the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, a model that continues to live up to its storied reputation. The latest version of this German executive sedan secured the highest overall score of the year, excelling across Euro NCAP’s four safety categories to claim the crown.

Chinese SUV Beats Porsche Macan To Become Euro NCAP’s Safest EV In 2024

Over in the Large SUV category, the Mazda CX-80 narrowly edged out the Audi Q6 e-tron to take the top spot in the class. Meanwhile, in the Large Family Car segment, the Volkswagen Passat and Skoda Superb ended up sharing the spotlight thanks to identical safety scores. Nothing like a bit of sibling rivalry when you’re built on the same platform.

More: Euro NCAP Targets Trucks With New Tests As 3% Of Vehicles Involved In 15% Of Fatal Crashes

If you’re wondering why certain vehicle categories weren’t featured in Euro NCAP’s “Best in Class” rankings, the answer lies in the numbers, or lack thereof. In some cases, not enough cars in a segment were tested. In others, contenders were held back by a critical weak point: the dreaded red body-part score. As Euro NCAP explained, “In case of a red critical body region, the vehicle is limited to a maximum of 4 stars.” That mean even one significant safety flaw can tank a car’s rating, no matter how well it performs elsewhere.

That said, one honorable mention goes to China’s Maxus eTerron 9, which made history as the first fully electric pickup tested by Euro NCAP. It didn’t walk away with a “Best in Class” title, but its safety performance earned a nod from the organization.

Below, you’ll find videos and photos showcasing the safety tests for the “Best in Class” vehicles of 2024. Looking ahead, Euro NCAP’s safety assessment protocols are set to undergo changes in 2026, but its signature five-star rating scale will remain.

Modellista Turns Toyota’s bZ4x Into An ’80s Sci-Fi Dream Machine

  • Modellista has launched a concept based on the Toyota bZ4x at the Tokyo Auto Salon.
  • The electric crossover benefits from comprehensive styling upgrades and interior touches.
  • The concept will likely inspire a future Modellista kit for the facelifted version of the EV.

Toyota’s in-house Japanese tuning arm, Modellista, has revealed its newest creation, the Concept Zero, at the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon. Built on the fully electric Toyota bZ4x, the concept has a retro-futuristic flair reminiscent of 1980s visions of tomorrow. It also hints at potential styling upgrades for Toyota’s electric crossovers, offering a preview of what could define the next generation of Modellista designs.

One of the standout features of the Concept Zero are the new wheels, which sport a distinctive, aero-efficient three-spoke design. To create a more cohesive appearance, Modellista replaced the bZ4x’s stock black fender cladding with body-colored panels, giving the concept a sleeker, more seamless profile. Additional refinements include sportier side skirts that extend lower, covering a larger area on the profile.

The custom front bumper has also been thoroughly reworked, incorporating an illuminated light strip in place of traditional intakes, along with headlight covers and a pronounced lower chin equipped with integrated fins. At the rear, Modellista applied a similar treatment with LED lighting and a diffuser extension, completing the look.

Inside, the Concept Zero builds on its futuristic theme with ambient lighting integrated into the dashboard and center console, creating a clean, high-tech atmosphere. Modellista branding appears throughout, while the armrests and glass roof feature matching graphics that echo the sci-fi-inspired exterior.

While Modellista emphasized ride comfort and refinement during development, the concept doesn’t appear to include any chassis or powertrain modifications. It’s likely that the vehicle retains the stock AWD setup of the Toyota bZ4x, which delivers 215 hp (160 kW / 218 PS) from its e-TNGA-based electric platform.

The Toyota bZ4x and Subaru Solterra twins were introduced in 2022. The EVs are expected to receive a mid-lifecycle update later this year. These updates could include performance-oriented variants, potentially with Gazoo Racing and STI branding, adding a sportier edge to the EV duo.

Judging from the timing of the Modellista Concept Zero’s launch, the Japanese tuner is already working on styling upgrades for the upcoming facelift.

In addition to the EV, Modellista’s display at the Tokyo Auto Salon featured an eye-catching automotive sculpture called Embryo. This artistic creation acts as a manifesto for the tuner’s future design direction, showcasing “flowing lines and sculptural surfaces that seem to have been carved away.” The sculpture embraces an “asymmetrical style” and incorporates indirect lighting that pulsates rhythmically, mimicking a heartbeat.

Porsche Sold Nearly Twice As Many Macan EVs As ICE In Q4 2024, But There’s A Catch

  • Porsche sold 310,718 vehicles in 2024, including 102,889 units of the Cayenne.
  • The Macan EV sold nearly twice as many units as the ICE version in Q4 2024.
  • The electric Taycan sales dropped by 49%, while the 718 lineup saw a 15% increase.

Porsche has released its global sales results for 2024, reporting 310,718 vehicle deliveries, a 3% decline compared to 2023. One of the highlights is the Macan EV, which managed to outsell its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterpart in the fourth quarter of the year. On the flip side, the fully electric Taycan struggled to find buyers, with sales nearly halving compared to the previous year.

The Porsche Macan EV made its debut in January 2024, but customers didn’t get their hands on one until the very end of September. Of the 27,795 units sold in Q4, nearly 66% (18,278) were electric, while the remaining 9,517 were gas-powered models.

Why the Macan EV’s Win Needs an Asterisk

Before anyone pops champagne over the Macan EV outpacing its aging ICE counterpart, it’s important to note that the gas-powered version was discontinued in Europe, one of Porsche’s key markets, as of spring 2024, due to tougher cybersecurity regulations. Buyers in the EU essentially had no choice but to go electric if they wanted a Macan. Meanwhile, in the U.S. and other regions, Porsche still offers both versions side by side.

Overall, Porsche sold 82,795 examples of the Macan in 2024 (ICE and EV), a 5% dip compared to 2023’s purely ICE lineup. According to the company, this decline can be attributed to the discontinuation of the ICE model from Europe, and the “staggered introduction” of the Macan EV worldwide.

Taycan Takes a Tumble, Panamera Hits a Snag in China

The Taycan suffered the worst sales decline in the Porsche lineup with 20,836 units representing a 49% drop compared to 2023. Porsche suggests that the significant drop is due to the introduction of the facelifted model, acknowledging that the “the ramp-up of electric mobility is generally proceeding more slowly than planned”.

The Taycan was Porsche’s weakest link in 2024, with sales crashing by 49% to just 20,836 units. Porsche blamed the sharp decline on the transition to the updated facelifted model but also admitted that the shift to electric mobility is “generally proceeding more slowly than planned”.

The Porsche Panamera also entered a new generation last year bringing several upgrades compared to its predecessor. However, sales dropped by 13% to 29,587 units, a dip largely attributed to waning demand in the critical Chinese market.

Growth For The Cayenne, 911, and 718

Luckily for the Zuffenhausen brand, the Cayenne has evolved into a buyer’s favorite, accounting for nearly a third of Porsche sales. The SUV sold 102,889 units in 2024, marking a 18% increase over the previous year, while retaining its position as the best-selling member of the Porsche lineup.

The 911 also held its ground as Porsche’s flagship sports car, delivering 50,941 units and securing third place behind the Cayenne and Macan. The 718 Boxster and Cayman, Porsche’s entry-level sports cars, enjoyed a 15% boost with a combined 23,670 units sold worldwide. Despite this growth, the future of the 718 lineup remains uncertain as Porsche has reportedly pushed back the launch of their fully electric successors.

China Sales Collapse

Regionally, Porsche saw mixed results. Sales grew in Europe (+9%) and North America (+1%), but China, the automaker’s largest single market in recent years, tanked by 28%, with the automaker citing a “continuing challenging economic situation”. While the company remains optimistic about personalization trends, with more buyers adding profitable optional features, it doesn’t change the reality that Porsche is losing significant ground in one of its most crucial markets.

Looking ahead, Detlev von Platen, Porsche’s Executive Board Member for Sales and Marketing, struck a measured tone:

“With the youngest product range in the company’s history, our offering is highly attractive to our customers. At the same time, of course, we do expect that the economic and geopolitical conditions will challenge us more than ever in 2025. Nevertheless, our goal is to further strengthen our brand globally and to exploit market potential. We will do this in line with demand in the individual regions in order to remain true to our principle of value-based sales in the future.”

Porsche Buyers Snap Up Gas-Powered 718s Like It’s 1999 As Taycan Sales Tank

  • Porsche sold a record 76,157 vehicles in the US last year, despite the Taycan’s poor performance.
  • The 718 and the 911 two-door sports cars increased their sales by 26% and 21% respectively.
  • Still, the Macan and Cayenne SUVs remained the two best-selling Porsche models for 2024.

Porsche set a new U.S. sales record in 2024, moving 76,157 units, marking a modest but meaningful 1% increase over 2023. This achievement was largely fueled by strong performances from the Cayenne, 911, and 718 lineups, which more than offset a sharp drop in Taycan sales.

Starting with the Taycan, it sold just 4,747 units in the States throughout the previous year, representing a substantial 37% drop compared to 2023. This performance placed it as the second-lowest seller in Porsche’s lineup, ahead of only the Panamera, which moved 3,982 units.

Sports Cars Step Up: 718 and 911 Shine

The standout success of 2024 was Porsche’s 718 lineup, which saw an impressive 26% surge in sales, totaling 5,698 units. This strong performance meant the Boxster and Cayman twins outsold the Panamera and Taycan sedans in the American market.

The spike likely reflects buyers rushing to secure one of the last combustion-powered models before the lineup transitions to an all-electric future. While Porsche has delayed its EV plans, the looming farewell to gas-powered 718s has undoubtedly fueled demand. That said, with Porsche acknowledging mid-2024 that the shift to an all-electric future will take longer than initially expected, the possibility of ICE-powered versions lingering a bit longer remains open.

The iconic 911 family also proved to be quite popular with US buyers, selling 14,128 units (+21%) last year. According to Porsche, its two-door sports cars, the 911 and 718, together accounted for an impressive 26% of the brand’s total US deliveries last year. Clearly, American enthusiasts aren’t ready to part ways with Porsche’s ICE-powered sports car heritage just yet.

SUVs Reign Supreme, But EV Plans Shift Gears

Unsurprisingly, Porsche’s SUVs remained its bread and butter in the US market. The Macan led the pack with 25,180 units sold, though it saw a 6.6% dip from 2023. Meanwhile, the Cayenne celebrated its best year ever, selling 22,432 units, representing a nearly 10% year-over-year increase.

The Macan’s slight decline comes as Porsche introduced a new all-electric Macan EV. However, flagging Taycan sales and uncertainty surrounding U.S. EV tax credits under the Trump administration appear to have forced Porsche to reevaluate its electrification strategy. In November, the company confirmed that it would continue offering the ICE-powered Macan in North America “for the foreseeable future,” even though the model has already been retired in Europe due to emissions regulations.

Certified Pre-Owned Market Hits New Highs

Porsche’s success wasn’t limited to new cars. The Porsche Approved Certified Pre-Owned program also hit a new record, with 43,249 vehicles sold, a solid 12% increase over 2023. This growth underscores the strong demand for Porsche vehicles, even in the secondhand market.

Reflecting on the year, Timo Resch, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America, said:

“The past year has marked a pivotal moment for PCNA. Our brand continued to go from strength to strength, supported by unprecedented new ICE, Hybrid and BEV model introductions, including the new 911, the new Panamera, the new Taycan and the new Macan. As a result we were able to offer our customers the most diverse and complete range of cars in Porsche’s history. I am grateful to every owner, every dealer and every employee for driving this success as our attention focuses on 2025 and the opportunities ahead of us.”
