Dodge Dealer’s $49 Charger Lease Is Real But You’ll Actually Pay Four Times That

  • Dealer offers Charger Daytona lease for $49.99 a month during back-to-school sale event.
  • Buyers must qualify for five stacked rebates including EV tax credit and regional bonuses.
  • Most importantly, it requires a hefty down payment, while mileage remains unknown.

The Dodge Charger Daytona hasn’t exactly had the greatest start to life. Early reviews were critical of its driving dynamics, the base price isn’t exactly competitive when performance is factored in, and it started out as a two-door only, which limits its target demographic. Now, at least one dealer might have a way to interest more buyers, and it’s a lease that’ll cost less per month than the average American spends on coffee.

Elk Grove Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram is in the midst of what it’s calling a back-to-school sale. It’s offering low APR, thousands of dollars off some models, and one particularly wild-sounding lease deal. That deal is on the aforementioned Charger Daytona, and it reportedly costs just $49.99 a month for buyers who qualify. Since there’s no such thing as a free lunch, though, the list of requirements is where things start to get complicated.

Credit and Rebates

First and foremost, the customer must have the right credit score. Specifically, they have to qualify for tier 1 approval. Typically, that’s a credit score of 750 or higher. On top of that, they have to qualify for five different rebates. The biggest one, the federal EV tax credit of $7,500, is one that lots of people will be eligible for. The others, though, aren’t as simple.

A $1,000 rebate for “lease bonus cash” is only available to customers currently leasing another car. An even larger $4,000 rebate is for “West BC SFS Lease Bonus Cash.” In other words, one has to live in the Western Business Center of Stellantis and finance the loan through it. A further $2,000 rebate is only available to friends and family of Stellantis workers. Finally, a $500 rebate kicks in for first responders or military members.

Dodge Dealer’s $49 Charger Lease Is Real But You’ll Actually Pay Four Times That

The $5,000 Fine Print

Provided that all of that checks out, the $49.99 is still on the table, but from what we’re hearing, the fine print makes the deal look a little less sweet. Evidently, buyers need to put at least $5,000 down to get it, which effectively makes the monthly payment closer to $200 over the course of 24 months. Even so, that’s not a bad deal.

What complicates things is that the dealership hasn’t disclosed the mileage allowance, which could mean that it’s set low enough to keep costs down. For anyone driving more than a short commute, the overage penalties could may erase any perceived savings.

So while $49.99 a month makes for an eye-catching headline, the layers of conditions, hefty down payment, and probable mileage cap make it a deal that looks far better on paper than in practice. Elk Grove may draw attention with the figure, but once the fine print is accounted for, most shoppers will recognize it as little more than a flashy number that doesn’t match the reality of driving the car.

All things considered, would this deal be enough to get you into a new Dodge Charger Daytona? Let us know in the comments below.

Carscoops reached out to Elk Grove for further details and will update this piece if we hear back.

We Drove Volvo’s Flagship XC90 And EX90 And Only One Impressed Us Most: Review

Volvo has adjusted course on its electrification strategy, choosing not to go EV-only but instead continuing to offer updated versions of its combustion-powered models alongside their electric counterparts. The first to illustrate this dual-track approach is the 90 series, where the facelifted XC90 joins the all-new EX90. At a recent local test drive event, we had the chance to experience both SUVs side by side, taking each for a spin to see how they compare.

The EX90 was originally introduced in late 2022, but production didn’t start until mid-2024 due to supply issues and lingering software bugs. On the other hand, the second-generation XC90, originally debuted in 2014, received a mild refresh in 2019, and has just been treated to a more thorough update in 2024.

More: Volvo’s Reborn XC70 Is For The EV Skeptics

The two Swedish SUVs have similar footprints with three rows of seats. However, they ride on different underpinnings, as the XC90 retains the original SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) platform, while the EX90 utilizes the much newer SPA 2 architecture. More importantly, the XC90 offers mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain options, while the EX90 is exclusively available in fully electric form.

With the specifications laid out, the question becomes how these SUVs measure up in design, cabin quality, and on-road character.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, Who’s the Fairest of Them All?

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
\\\\\\\\

Both models cut an imposing figure on the road, though the EX90 stretches a little longer with its extended rear overhang. The XC90’s 2024 facelift, particularly its redesigned front fascia, succeeds in giving the veteran SUV a fresher appearance without altering the bulk of its bodywork.

The XC90’s grille features a distinctive pattern that immediately sets it apart from the EX90’s minimalist, closed-off face. I personally prefer the look of the XC90’s slimmer LED headlights with Thor’s hammer graphics over the EX90’s pixel-style DRLs with the overly complex split-opening theatrics. As for the faux side intakes of the XC90, in my opinion it wouldn’t hurt if they were smaller as they serve no real purpose.

More: Volvo ES90 Takes On BMW i5 With More Style And Range

From the side, the EX90 asserts its modernity with a clamshell hood, sharper dynamic lines, and flared fenders that integrate more seamlessly into the body. The same applies to the futuristic design of the 22-inch wheels that edge out the classy but conservative looks of the XC90’s 21-inch alloys.

The rear end is probably the weakest point of the XC90, with the EX90 looking one generation ahead. Don’t get me wrong – I always liked the aristocratic elegance of the big ICE-powered Volvo SUV but its tail has remained the same over the past decade and it can no longer hide its age. Having said that, I’m not a huge fan of the split taillight arrangement of the EX90 with extra LEDs flanking the rear glass.

Minimalism Over Perceived Quality

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Moving inside, the EX90 bets on minimalism, while the XC90 does a better job in the perceived quality with bigger chunks of fabric and wood inserts on the dashboard. The floating center console of the EV has more space for storage and a cool little case for the key, but I still prefer the more traditional setup of the XC90 with the crystal-like shifter.

In terms of tech, the XC90 has recently gained a 11.2 inch infotainment display and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The EX90 has a bigger and more commanding 14.5-inch touchscreen that’s joined by a smaller but easier to read 9-inch instrument cluster.

More: This New Seatbelt Reacts To Your Body Before A Crash Even Happens

The Google-powered infotainment software with crisp graphics is shared between the two, although the absence of physical buttons and shortcuts is a bit more frustrating in the EV. Overall, I didn’t like the fact I was several clicks away from accessing the selectable driving modes, but at least the climate controls are always visible on the lower end of the screen.

Predictably, the cabins of the SUVs feel similarly spacious. According to the spec sheets, the XC90 has slightly less headroom than the EX90, although it does have a touch of extra hip room on the third row. The boot is nearly identical, with 662 lt (23.4 cubic feet) for the EX90 and 668 lt (23.6 cubic feet) for the XC90 (both measured with the third-row seats folded). The seats are superb in both models, offering great levels of comfort and support for various body types.

Staying loyal to Volvo’s safety fixation (and reputation), both models come with sophisticated ADAS suites and a limited top speed of 180 km/h (112 mph). However, only the EX90 has a roof-mounted LiDAR, with the XC90 still relying on radar and camera sensors.

The Driving Experience is the Decisive Factor

My drive started with the XC90, as I wanted to see if it would still impress me as much as its predecessor did when I first drove it many years ago. It most recently did. The ride is smooth, the cabin is serene, and it still feels like an excellent long-distance cruiser.

Predictably, the XC90 still feels like a big and heavy SUV when you push it in the corners, with a healthy amount of body roll despite the efforts of the self-leveling air suspension. With a combined output of 449 hp (335 kW / 455 PS) from its plug-in hybrid powertrain, the SUV is no slouch, but it’s clearly more geared towards comfort than outright performance.

More: Volvo Doesn’t Need Wagons Anymore, Says SUVs Are The Future

The EX90, on the other hand, feels like a step into the future. You immediately feel the difference the newer chassis makes in ride quality, combined with the more sophisticated dual-chamber air suspension. In Comfort mode, it glides over bumps, while Performance mode tightens it up reducing body roll. Furthermore, the steering of the EV feels quicker and more direct, doing a better job in disguising its heavyweight nature.

The EX90 we drove came fitted with the Performance powertrain which is a $5,000 option in the US. This dials up the combined output of the dual electric motors to 510 hp (380 kW / 517 PS) from the standard 397 hp (296 kW / 402 PS). Overall, the half-second advantage over the PHEV in the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint might not sound that big on paper, but the instant torque delivery and overall responsiveness make the EV feel significantly quicker on the road.

Final Thoughts

After spending a limited amount of time with Volvo’s two flagship SUVs, I reached two clear conclusions. The facelifted XC90 remains a strong contender in the segment, with welcome improvements in the design and ride quality. However, when driven back-to-back with the fully electric EX90, it’s clear the latter takes the lead in performance, comfort, and driving dynamics. Volvo was right to keep the ICE-powered XC90 in the lineup with thoughtful updates, but for those open to an electric-only option, the newer EX90 makes the more compelling case – even with a higher price tag.

VW Sells You Less Horsepower Then Charges A Fee To Give It Back

  • VW ID.3 Pure delivers 148 hp unless owners unlock full power with subscription.
  • The EV is marketed as 168 hp despite limiting actual output without extra fee.
  • It argues the subscription mirrors traditional trim strategies with varied engine tuning.

If you thought subscription fatigue was already creeping into your streaming accounts, Volkswagen is happy to add some more to your car. Over in the UK, entry-level ID.3 Pure models, listed as having 168 hp (170 kW) on VW’s configurator, actually have just 148 hp (110 kW) unless buyers pay an extra fee. Yes, Volkswagen is charging customers more to give the power their cars already have.

More: Rivian Software Boss Says Google Cast In, Buttons Out, Open To Range And Power Boost Subscriptions

As far as subscriptions go, this one is somewhat baffling. 20 horsepower and 33 lb-ft isn’t all that much to write home about. It’s such a small boost in power that Volkswagen says it won’t affect the overall range of the ID.3 at all.

The Cost of Extra Power

British drivers can cough up £16.50 (equal to $22.50 at current exchange rates) per month for the upgrade, almost three times the price of a basic Netflix subscription, or £165 ($225) per year. If you want to skip the monthly hassle, VW also offers a one-time “lifetime” payment of £649 ($878). It’s unclear whether that’s tied to the car or your user account, but either way, it’s a lot of cash for a modest performance bump.

According to AutoExpress, the added power won’t affect insurance rates. That’s great and all, but it’s because the ID.3 is rated at 168 hp from the factory, even if you’re driving around without the upgrade and, thus, with 20 fewer ponies. Only time will tell whether or not owners figure out how to hack this system – and if they do, whether this voids Volkswagen’s warranty or not.

VW Sells You Less Horsepower Then Charges A Fee To Give It Back

Volkswagen’s Defense

On its part, Volkswagen compared this approach to traditional engine lineups, where the same displacement could be offered in multiple states of tune at different price points. In a statement to the magazine, the company said:

“Offering more power to customers is nothing new… These traditionally are higher up in the product range, with more specification and a higher list price. If customers wish to have an even sportier driving experience, they now have an option to do so, within the life of the vehicle, rather than committing from the outset with a higher initial purchase price. The car is presented on the configurator with [201bhp], with the option made very clear to customers.”

Subscriptions, Subscriptions Everywhere

Obviously, the VW ID.3 is far from the only one playing the subscription game. This isn’t even the only subscription available from the German brand. It’ll also sell customers ambient lighting, navigation, voice control, and even heated seats via subscription

And it’s hardly alone. BMW, Mercedes, and Tesla all offer similar unlocks, though when it comes to performance, most rivals deliver more value per dollar.

Ford offers 100 lb-ft (135 Nm) of torque for $995, Polestar 68 more horsepower for $1,195, and Mercedes 60-110 hp for $1,200. Even gas-burning tunes from the factory offer more power per dollar than Volkswagen for doing little more than changing some code. Call me cynical, but that’s not shocking from what seems like the world’s least passionate automaker.

‘The Day I Flooded Rivian And Cost Them Half A Million’ Ex Worker Says. Then He Hits Post

  • Security footage shows water pouring after forklift hit pipe at Rivian factory.
  • According to the ex-worker, the flood caused more than $457k in damages.
  • Employee allegedly posted about the incident on TikTok and was fired months later.

Big ambitions sometimes meet unexpected detours, and for Rivian, one such moment reportedly involved a flooded factory floor in Normal, Illinois. A few months ago, operations came to a sudden stop when a forklift operator hit an overhead water pipe, sending water through the facility.

In a TikTok video reportedly posted by someone identifying as the driver, he alleged that he was under the influence and listening to music through his headphones at the time.

It shows him reversing the forklift along the line, but unbeknownst to him, it was too high, and the bright red water pipe was running a little too low. The top of the forklift can be seen smashing into the water pipe, splitting it in two, and causing water to pour into the factory.

According to the operator, who goes by the handle “deryiooo” on TikTok, work on the line had to be halted while other staffers were forced to clean up the mess. While he no longer works for Rivian, he says he was not immediately fired for slamming into the water pipe and only had to file an incident report.

While he was not initially let go, he says that several months later, he did lose his job at Rivian. At around the same time, he also received a letter in the mail, revealing that the incident had caused $457,345 worth of damage.

Carscoops has reached out to Rivian, asking for additional information about the incident and when it occurred. Some online commenters have claimed it took place in the factory’s battery department and that similar incidents have occurred at least twice before. According to those same unverified accounts, the forklift driver may have struck the overhead water pipes on two or possibly three occasions.

Future Corvette Design Could Be Hiding In These New Concepts

  • Chevy revealed the CX and CX.R Vision Gran Turismo hypercar design concepts.
  • The Corvette CX is a 2,000 hp electric all-wheel drive hypercar with futuristic styling.
  • CX.R adds a twin-turbo V8 and three motors in a race-focused performance package.

Chevrolet has trotted out a handful of Corvette concepts over the past few months and that continues today with the new CX and CX.R Vision Gran Turismo. They’re futuristic supercars that were created by the Chevrolet Performance Studio in Warren, Michigan.

Interestingly, Chevrolet emphasized that while the CX and CX.R are not bound for production, “the pair will serve as inspiration to inform Corvette design language for years to come“.

Unveiled at The Quail, the CX embraces “quintessential Corvette hallmarks” while pushing the car into radical new territory. It features an evolutionary front fascia with aggressive intakes and slender lighting units. They’re joined by sleek bodywork and pronounced wheel arches, which stand out as the car is less than 41 inches (1041 mm) tall.

More: New Corvette Concept Pushes C9 Into Radical New Territory Without A V8

Aerodynamics played a big role in the design and there are a couple of active components including the front diffuser and rear wing. Chevrolet also took a cue from the McMurtry Spéirling as the concept has built-in fans that “draw air through the open-channel bodywork, generating massive downforce and adjusting the airflow over the rear diffuser to refine aerodynamic balance in real-time.”

The jet-like canopy opens forward to reveal a minimalist cabin with Inferno Red sports seats wrapped in premium silicone leather. We can also see milled aluminum components and forged carbon fiber accents.

\\\\\\\\

On the technology front, the Corvette CX has a motorsport-inspired steering wheel with an integrated display. Chevrolet said it’s used to operate all major controls and keep the driver’s focus on the road ahead. Aiding in this is a ‘digital windscreen,’ which apparently acts as a massive heads-up display.

Since we’re in fantasy land, Chevrolet said the car features four electric motors that generate a combined output in excess of 2,000 hp (1,491 kW / 2,028 PS). They’re powered by a 90 kWh lithium-ion battery and give the concept four-wheel torque vectoring.

Corvette CX.R Vision Gran Turismo

\\\\\\\

The Corvette CX.R Vision Gran Turismo follows in the footsteps of the standard CX, but was designed for racing. As a result, it wears a black and yellow livery as well as a more extreme aero package.

The changes immediately stand out as we can see a larger front splitter, revised intakes, and sportier side skirts. They’re joined by a fixed rear wing and a ventilated engine cover.

Drivers will find a lightweight carbon fiber dashboard and purpose-built seats wrapped in suede. The cabin also has a revamped steering wheel and yellow accents.

Chevrolet envisions the race car would use a twin-turbo 2.0-liter V8 engine that runs on e-fuel and produces 900 hp (671 kW / 913 PS). It’s connected to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, which sends power to the rear wheels.

The car has also been outfitted with three electric motors as there’s one for each front wheel as well as a third in the aforementioned gearbox. The company said this would provide “instant torque” as well as a combined output of 2,000 hp (1,491 kW / 2,028 PS).

Both cars will come to Gran Turismo 7 later this month as Chevrolet worked with Polyphony Digital to incorporate them into the iconic racing game.

Mahindra Built A Batman SUV And Somehow It’s Completely Serious

  • The Mahindra BE 6 Batman Edition channels The Dark Knight Trilogy’s stealthy style.
  • It features unique exterior and interior touches, including countless bat emblems.
  • The special edition of the EV is limited to 300 units for India, each priced at $27,200.

Those of you who thought the Mahindra BE 6 had a touch of Batmobile flair may feel vindicated, as the company is now offering a Batman Edition of the EV. Marketed as “the world’s first commercially available Batman-inspired SUV”, it will be limited to 300 units and sold exclusively in India.

The Mahindra BE 6 Batman Edition was developed in partnership with Warner Bros Discovery Global Consumer Products, similar to last year’s Pininfarina specials. Unlike the ultra-exclusive, high-priced models from Mahindra’s luxury arm, this collaboration applies the Batman aesthetic to a more accessible electric SUV.

More: Bruce Wayne’s Manhattan Mansion Now Sells Million-Dollar Pininfarina Batmobiles

The movie franchise may have moved on to Matt Reeves’ The Batman starring Robert Pattinson, but this edition takes its cues from Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy, where Christian Bale donned the iconic suit.

Bat Stickers Galore

Visually, the stealthy exterior of the BE 6 combines a custom Satin Black shade with gloss black accents. However, the standout feature is the Batman decal on the front doors, complemented by a golden bat emblem on the front fenders. Gold also appears on the springs and brake calipers, tucked behind the 20-inch alloy wheels.

\\\\\\\\\

Mahindra designers added more bat emblems on the hub caps, rear bumper, windows, and rear windshield, knowing that the SUV will be driven by the biggest fans of the DC Comics superhero – if not by Bruce Wayne himself.

Furthermore, there is a Batman Edition sticker on the rear door cladding and special puddle lights serving as the equivalent of the Bat Signal spotlight for the road. Another highlight is the Infinity Roof with an illuminated Dark Knight Trilogy Bat emblem on the glass.

As expected, the Batman treatment carries through to the cabin. Black suede and leather upholstery are paired with gold accents and detailing. The bat silhouette appears on the seats, interior labels, door straps, dashboard trim, and in the custom welcome graphics of the digital cockpit. A final touch is the “Brushed Alchemy Gold Batman Edition” numbered plaque mounted on the center console.

\\\\\\\

Mahindra

Pratap Bose, Chief Design and Creative Officer at Mahindra & Mahindra commented: “The BE 6 has always been about boldness and forward thinking. With the Batman Edition, we wanted to go further – to create something so personal, so visually arresting, that owning it feels like owning a piece of cinematic history. We’ve obsessed over even the smallest detail, so that every time you look at it, you discover something new.”

Performance and pricing

This special edition is based on the most powerful BE 6 variant, producing 282 hp (210 kW / 286 PS) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque from a single rear-mounted electric motor. Its 79 kWh battery delivers a WLTP range of 550 km (342 miles).

Mahindra even gave it “Batman-inspired” exterior sounds, because if you are going to drive something like this, it might as well sound like it’s about to chase down the Joker.

Pricing starts at ₹27.79 lakh (about $27,200), roughly $1,000 more than the standard model, yet still making it one of the cheapest rides you could picture in Bruce Wayne’s fictional garage. Only 300 will be made, with orders opening August 23 and first deliveries timed perfectly for International Batman Day on September 20, just in case you wanted an excuse to wear a cape to the dealership

Porsche’s Most Powerful SUV Could Be Its Most Controversial Yet

  • Porsche’s electric Cayenne will offer more power than the Turbo E-Hybrid version.
  • Less flowing design separates EV visually from its combustion-powered sibling.
  • A four-screen cabin layout marks a shift from Porsche’s traditionally clean interiors.

Next year, new car buyers looking for a high-end SUV with a luxury badge and cutting-edge tech will have something new to consider: an all-electric version of the Porsche Cayenne.

The EV follows in the tire tracks of the Macan Electric, offering a distinct design, an entirely battery-powered drivetrain, and a healthy performance boost, all while being sold alongside its combustion-engine sibling. For now, this prototype provides us with the clearest look yet at what’s to come.

Electric Design Language

Like the Macan Electric, the EV variant of the Cayenne will break from the smooth, flowing lines of the gas-powered model. The design appears more upright and muscular, starting at the front with a headlight treatment that mirrors the Macan. Each unit includes four slim horizontal daytime running lights that also function as turn signals.

Much of the front end of this prototype has been covered by non-production-spec parts, but we can make out the shape of the lower grilles, the central positioning of the main radar unit, and the general shape of the bumper. Those lower grilles will be similar to what’s found on the 992.2-generation 911, meaning they have the ability to be opened or closed.

The rear-end design of the electric Porsche Cayenne should also look familiar. Like its smaller electric sibling, the new model will rock narrow LED taillights, likely joined by a light bar. Some of the plastic design details on the bumper and the diffuser also look a little cheap, but these elements should be refined by the time the production model is revealed.

Porsche’s Most Powerful SUV Could Be Its Most Controversial Yet
SHProshots

Earlier spy shots give us a good idea of what to expect inside. The cabin will feature a fully digital curved instrument cluster, a wide central infotainment screen, a dedicated passenger display, and a separate touchscreen for climate controls. While this modern, screen-heavy layout may not appeal to every longtime Porsche fan, it’s clearly aligned with the brand’s push toward a more connected, tech-centric driving experience.

Serious Electric Performance

While debate may rage about the SUV’s design, power-hungry buyers should be more than satisfied with the performance on offer. Though official specs haven’t been released yet, early estimates suggest the base model could produce around 400 hp, with the mid-tier S variant climbing to nearly 600.

At the top of the range, the Turbo versions could push past 1,000 horsepower, comfortably outpacing the already formidable 730 hp from the current Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid. Expect the quickest model to sprint from 0 to 60 mph (0-96 km/h) in the low two-second range, though Porsche will likely cap top speed at 155 mph (250 km/h), as it often does with its EVs.

When it comes to driving range, Porsche is reportedly aiming for between 350 and 400 miles on a full charge, depending on the variant. That figure would keep the Cayenne EV competitive with other high-performance electric SUVs, while also offering the kind of long-distance capability buyers expect at this level.

Xiaomi’s Massive Waitlist Has CEO Suggesting Tesla To Frustrated Buyers

  • Many Xiaomi buyers have started to complain about the Yu7’s long waiting times.
  • Customers need to wait an average of 56-59 weeks to take delivery of their SUV.
  • The brand’s CEO urged buyers to consider other Chinese-made EVs to avoid delays.

The Xiaomi YU7 may have only recently launched, but it’s already proving to be so popular that the company can’t keep up with demand. The situation has escalated to the point where the brand’s founder is recommending potential customers check out rival electric vehicles instead.

Read: A 60-Week Waitlist Just Made Xiaomi’s SUV A Flippers Goldmine

Xiaomi unveiled its rival to the Tesla Model Y in June, and within 18 hours it had received roughly 240,000 orders. Given the extraordinary demand, new customers are being told they’ll need to wait an average of 56-59 weeks before taking delivery. While many may not have an issue with this, others have started to complain about the long waiting times.

Redirecting Demand

Writing on social media in response to the growing complaints, Xiaomi chief executive Lei Jun suggested shoppers in need of an EV urgently would be wise to consider other Chinese-made EVs. “If you need to buy a car quickly, other China-produced new energy vehicles are pretty good,” he wrote. Among Jun’s recommendations were the Xpeng G7, Li Auto i8 and, perhaps surprisingly, the Tesla Model Y, the electric SUV the YU7 is gunning for.

Yet Jun seemed to be perfectly fine with potential customers choosing Elon Musk‘s product instead: “The Model Y is a great car, and Tesla also announced a number of promotions yesterday, so you might want to consider it,” he quipped.

Xiaomi’s Massive Waitlist Has CEO Suggesting Tesla To Frustrated Buyers

Why Is It So Popular?

The extraordinary demand being experienced for the YU7 is understandable given the attractive design and all of the features it packs into an incredibly competitive price. The entry-level Standard variant starts at 253,500 yuan or $35,300 and has an 800-volt architecture, which allows it to charge to 80 percent in just 13 minutes. It can also travel 519 miles (835 km) on a charge and is powered by a 315 hp motor.

For those wanting more performance, Xiaomi offers two upgraded versions. The Pro, which is priced from 279,900 yuan (around $39,000), comes with dual motors delivering a combined 489 horsepower. At the top of the range sits the Max version, which pairs a 101.7 kWh NMC battery with 681 hp. Despite the boost in specs, it remains competitively priced at 329,900 yuan, or roughly $46,000.

At the moment, Xiaomi’s EVs are only available in China, but the company is preparing for a global rollout. When that happens, it’ll be stepping into a much broader ring, aiming squarely at Tesla and other major automakers across international markets.

Lucid’s Gravity X Looks Like It Might Survive A Dirt Road If It Has Enough Warning

  • Lucid reveals off-road concept version of Gravity at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
  • The Gravity X adds roof box, LED lighting, lifted suspension, and all-terrain tires.
  • Custom bodykit includes skid plates, tow hooks, black trim, and topographic map details.

Designing a capable off-roader from the ground up is one thing, but adapting a luxury electric crossover that leans more toward minivan than SUV is a different challenge altogether. Lucid took on that challenge with its latest concept, creating a tougher-looking version of the Gravity SUV meant for off-pavement exploration or at the very least, to give the impression it could.

Unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the Gravity X concept adds off-road-focused hardware and distinct styling touches that set it apart from the standard model.

Functional Bodywork

The most immediately noticeable changes are up top: integrated crossbars support a roof box equipped with auxiliary LED lighting. Suspension has been lifted to boost ground clearance, and the 21- and 22-inch wheels are wrapped in aggressive all-terrain tires.

A revised bodykit helps reinforce the Gravity X’s off-road persona. The front bumper now features a prominent skid plate and integrated tow hooks. Plastic cladding surrounds the wheel arches, continuing along matching side skirts and into the rear bumper.

Lucid chose a satin-finished Astral Drift paint for the exterior, accented with brushed metal elements and a contrasting black roof. The concept also wears the Stealth Appearance package, swapping in darker trim pieces throughout. On the hood, a topographical map design showcases Big Sur and Death Valley, while the sill plates and rocker panels display the geographic coordinates of Pebble Beach.

Lucid

The interior keeps the familiar comforts but adds a few thoughtful upgrades, including more durable floor mats, premium leather seats with subtle orange accents, a microsuede-wrapped steering wheel, and walnut wood trim on the dashboard and center console.

Same Hardware Underneath

Performance hardware remains unchanged from the standard Gravity Grand Touring. The dual electric motors produce 828 hp (617 kW / 839 PS), drawing power from a 123 kWh battery. Lucid claims the SUV can deliver 450 miles (724 km) of EPA-estimated range and hit 60 mph (97 km/h) in just 3.4 seconds.

It’s not yet confirmed if the off-road additions might affect those performance figures, but with a taller ride height compromising aerodynamics and chunkier, less efficient tires, a trade-off seems likely.

Derek Jenkins, SVP of Design and Brand at Lucid, described the Gravity X as a natural evolution of the company’s SUV platform: “[The] Lucid Gravity has redefined the limits of what an uncompromising SUV can achieve. The Lucid Gravity X concept expands on these core principles to explore new possibilities off the beaten path while showcasing the incredible capabilities of the Gravity. Lucid’s range, power and versatility make it an ideal vehicle for those adventurers looking to explore further offroad.”

Could we See a Production Model?

The concept will be on display at the Concept Lawn of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 17. Whether it leads to a production-ready off-road trim remains to be seen, but given the relatively modest changes from the standard model, there’s little reason it couldn’t make the jump, giving Lucid a viable rival to the more outdoorsy Rivian R1S.

First Rivian Police Cruiser Reports For Duty In Tesla’s Backyard

  • Several other police departments throughout California and using EVs.
  • A Palo Alto police captain says the R1S is more spacious than the Ford Explorer.
  • It’s unclear if the agency will purchase any other EVs from Rivian.

Update: The Palo Alto Police Department has received its first patrol-ready Rivian R1S for testing, following an announcement earlier this year. In an interview with KRON4, which had the opportunity to ride along in the specially equipped electric SUV, Assistant Chief James Reifschneider commented, “This car works perfectly with a lot of the other technologies we use here in Palo Alto that I think separate us from other agencies.”

Original story continues below.

Screenshot KRON4 / YouTube

The first-ever R1S police cruiser has officially made its debut in the United States, and it’s headed straight to Palo Alto, home to Rivian’s sprawling facility. The electric SUV was unveiled at a recent event at Rivian’s headquarters, where local Mayor Ed Lauing took a moment to shower the company with praise.

Interestingly, this charter city in the northwestern corner of Santa Clara County is also home to Tesla’s new global engineering HQ, which has been operating there since 2023. Yet, for some reason, Elon Musk’s brand didn’t quite make the cut.

Read: 2025 Rivian R1S And R1T Combine Tired Looks With New Tech And More Power

Unlike the louder, garish designs you might expect from a police cruiser, the R1S keeps it understated. Most of the exterior is decked out in gloss black, while the front doors get a clean white trim. The department’s badge makes a neat appearance on the sides, adding just enough flair to remind everyone this is a police vehicle—not a luxury SUV on a road trip.

The R1S Cruiser Still Needs a Few Tweaks

For now, the R1S doesn’t have the customary red and blue roof light bar—it just didn’t arrive in time for the event. There’s also talk of a push bar being added, as well as other custom equipment for the cabin. Rivian’s engineers are reportedly working closely with the city to get the SUV ready for active duty.

Palo Alto’s Captain James Reifschneider spoke to Palo Alto Online, noting that the R1S offers significantly more cabin space than the Ford Explorers and Jeep Durangos currently used by the department.

While giving his State of the City presentation, Palo Alto Major Ed Lauing praised Rivian and his plans for the area.

More: California Cops Speak Out Against Tesla Police Cars, Call Them Unfit For Duty

“The electric car was created years before Rivian first shipped their EV, but Rivian wanted to be the best EV in the future, not the first EV of the past,” he said. “That sounds a lot like Palo Alto to me because Palo Alto is a great place to live and work and shop and play and go to school and that isn’t enough. We’re always looking to be more innovative going forward and to make our place in Palo Alto even better.”

Other Police EVs

Palo Alto is far from the only city jumping on the EV police cruiser bandwagon. Several agencies in California have started adding electric vehicles to their fleets, but the transition hasn’t been without its challenges.

The South Pasadena Police Department has replaced its entire fleet with Tesla Model 3s and Model Ys, but some departments have complained about the lack of space offered by these two Tesla models. The Rivian R1S is much larger, but it’s also much more expensive, starting at $75,900 in base guise before any expensive upgrades are made.

There’s no word on whether police in Palo Alto plan to add more Rivian models to their fleet.

This Defender Looks Vintage Until You Step On The Pedal

  • ECD Automotive transformed this classic Defender into a modern electric off-roader.
  • It features a 300 hp EV motor, 84 kWh battery, and selectable AWD or RWD setup.
  • Charging from 10 to 80 percent is possible in under an hour, the company claims.

This may look just like any other Land Rover Defender 110 restomod, right? Wrong. While it shares the familiar rugged looks of many restored Defenders, ECD Automotive’s Project Powder Keg has traded its traditional drivetrain for a fully electric setup, meaning its new owner will be able to go off-roading in complete silence.

However, they better not stray too far from civilization, as the special Defender only has a driving range of “up to” 200 miles (about 322 km).

Read: Classic Land Rover Packs 700 Hp And A Manual Gearbox Just To Show Up The Defender

The transformation centers on ECD’s Electric Direct EV drivetrain, which replaces the traditional combustion setup with an 84 kWh battery pack and an electric motor producing 300 horsepower and 368 lb-ft (499 Nm) of torque.

Eager to retain as much of the original model’s off-road credentials, the company allows it to be driven in two- or four-wheel drive. Charging from 10-80 percent is said to take less than an hour.

Subtle Exterior Mods

When viewed from the outside, there’s little to give away the Defender’s new powertrain, other than the notable absence of any exhaust pipes. It has been finished in Bonatti Gray with Shadow Black accents and includes a six-point external roll cage. A new A-bar bumper has then been added to the front, supporting a Warn winch.

A pair of new front-facing LED lights has also been attached to the roof, while found at the rear are additional lights, a steel bumper, and a new spare wheel.

\\\\\\\\\\\

No restomodded Defender would be complete without a revised interior, so that’s exactly what the Project Powder Keg has. It’s been equipped with Recaro Orthoped seats clad Veluto Pelle leather. Also fitted is a new Exmoor Evander steering wheel, custom gauges, billet aluminum accents, and a modern infotainment display.

There’s no word on how much the Land Rover’s overhaul cost, but if you have to ask, you’re probably not in the market for something like this.

EV Repairs Are Getting Cheaper, But Still More Expensive Than ICE

  • Electric vehicles are becoming cheaper to repair after accidents.
  • The drop comes as more shops gain experience with EVs.
  • However, they cost 15-20% more to fix than ICE-powered vehicles.

New vehicles come with a bit of a learning curve and that’s especially true of EVs. This applies not only to owners, but also to people and companies that service them.

Unfortunately with anything ‘new,’ costs tend to be high – at least initially. That’s particularly true when it comes to electric vehicle repairs, but prices are starting to fall.

More: EV Crash Claims Jump 38%, And Repairs Are Pricier Than Ever

According to the German Insurance Association (GDV), comprehensive insurance claims for electric vehicles were 20-25% higher than those for comparable combustion models last year. However, the average claim has now dropped to 15-20% higher than ICE-powered models.

The Deputy General Director for the GDV said, “The more electric cars there are on the road, the less their claims differ from comparable cars with combustion engines.” Anja Käfer-Rohrbach went on to explain, “A broader model range reaches a larger customer base, and workshops, towing companies, fire departments, and appraisers now have more experience with damaged electric cars.”

EV Repairs Are Getting Cheaper, But Still More Expensive Than ICE

She said these developments are helping to drive down repair costs as EVs are becoming the “new normal.” It’s also worth noting the latest study period was from 2021-2023, so EVs are far more common today.

On that note, the GDV said there were approximately 1.65 million electric vehicles registered in Germany at the beginning of the year. That’s a fivefold increase from 2021 and EVs currently account for 3.3% of all vehicles registered in the country.

The First Autonomous Robocar You Can Own Hides Its Steering Wheel Until It Wants You To Drive

  • Tensor has unveiled an autonomous vehicle designed for private ownership.
  • It’s a large luxury crossover that features pedals and a steering wheel that retract.
  • A launch is scheduled for 2026 and the EV will be built in Vietnam by VinFast.

While a number of companies are focused on robotaxis, Tensor has unveiled the first “fully autonomous L4 robocar that you can own.” That’s a bold claim from a company that can’t seem to cobble together a proper press kit, so forgive us if we’re a little hesitant to hand over the keys to our survival.

From the hodgepodge of information that the company released, we can see their robocar is actually a “luxury crossover SUV” that looks like a bloated Toyota Prius. It features an awkward-looking front end with sensors and SignalScreens. The latter are used to communicate with other road users via CarMoji.

More: GM Doubling Down On Autonomous Driving Efforts

Moving further back, we can see streamlined bodywork, aerodynamic wheels, and digital side mirrors that help the model to have a drag coefficient of 0.253. The robocar also sports double-laminated glass as well as rear coach doors for easy entry and egress. Speaking of the doors, they have PalmRead technology that allows people to access the vehicle without keys or their phone.

In terms of size, the robocar measures 217.5 inches (5,525 mm) long, 89 inches (2,261 mm) wide, and 78.3 inches (1,989 mm) tall with a wheelbase that spans 124 inches (3,150 mm). This means the model is significantly larger than other electric crossover such as the Cadillac Vistiq and Tesla Model X.

A Transforming Cabin

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

The interior looks basic, but it’s notable for having retractable pedals and a retractable steering wheel. When the latter is tucked into the dash, a display slides over so it’s in front of the ‘driver.’

Speaking of screens, there’s a front passenger display as well as a dual-screen rear entertainment system. Tensor also said the model comes nicely equipped with a heated steering wheel as well as heated, ventilated, and massaging seats. Other highlights include suede and fabric upholstery, a 128-color ambient lighting system, and dual wireless smartphone chargers.

The First Autonomous Robocar You Can Own Hides Its Steering Wheel Until It Wants You To Drive

While the interior is pretty bland, the company claims the model is the “world’s first AI agentic car” and goes “far beyond a basic voice assistant.” In particular, they said an “AI agent continuously processes data from in-cabin cameras, microphones, and other sensors.” The company claims this will enable owners to say something along the lines of “Pick up Mom from her house and bring her here” or “Drop me off at the airport and then return home.”

Despite all the monitoring equipment, Tensor said they’re focused on privacy and all data is processed and stored locally. However, they noted “users can access their data via the end-to-end encrypted smartphone app” and, let’s face it, anything connected to the internet isn’t 100% safe. On the bright side, if you’re concerned about privacy and security, there are physical camera covers and microphone off switches.

Electric And Autonomous

Powertrain details are sparse as the company said the model is an EV with a 112 kWh battery pack. When the battery is low, it can go from a 20% to 80% charge in as little as 10 minutes. Tensor also mentioned the crossover has four-wheel steering and an air suspension.

The real star is the Level 4 autonomous driving technology that allows the vehicle to “operate entirely without driver input under defined conditions.” This is enabled by over 100 sensors including 37 cameras, 5 lidars, 11 radars, 22 microphones, 10 ultrasonic sensors, 3 IMUs, GNSS, 16 collision detectors, 8 water-level detectors, 4 tire-pressure sensors, and 1 smoke detector.

Of course, if you prefer to drive yourself, you can still take the wheel and operate it like any other car.

\\\\\\\\\\\\

Since the robocar is designed for normal people who won’t spend time prepping it for every journey, Tensor had to develop a way to protect and clean the various sensors. As a result, there’s an intelligent cleaning system with dedicated wipers and nozzles as well as protective sensor covers that deploy when the vehicle is not in use. The car also has self-diagnosis to ensure everything is in working order.

The sensors feed data to an onboard supercomputer with 8,000 TOPs. There’s also a “dual-system AI” that “mirrors human cognition.” The company said, “System 1 delivers fast, reflexive responses through imitation learning from expert drivers, while System 2 uses a sophisticated multimodal Visual Language Model to reason through rare and complex edge cases.” The end result is supposedly confident navigation even in rain or fog.

Tensor went on to say their “advanced electrical and electronic architecture delivers full-stack redundancy – across power, communications, and control – ensuring fail-operational performance in any scenario.”

Could Arrive As Early As Next Year

While a number of questions remain, the company has partnered with VinFast, who will build the robocar at their Hai Phong factory in Vietnam. If everything goes according to plan, the first deliveries will occur in the second half of 2026 and the model will be offered in Europe, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates.

Lastly, the company has partnered with Marsh to offer the “world’s first insurance policy for robocars.” This promises to deliver cheap rates as “data shows that L4 autonomous vehicles are safer, and your insurance premiums should reflect that.”

Tesla’s Screens Are About To Get Unreal Graphics

  • Tesla may switch graphics on AMD-powered Model S and X.
  • Update could add interactive, game-like 3D car renderings.
  • Rivian, Ford, Volvo, Lotus, and GMC already use Unreal Engine.

Tesla owners are about to get a big upgrade in their cabins. A hacker says that the automaker is about to switch from one set of visuals to another. The new set of graphics could be akin to some of the most impressive video games on the market today. Notably, it would also mean that Tesla is following the lead of brands like Rivian, Volvo, and Ford.

Unreal Engine is a 3D creation tool built by Epic Games, and as the name suggests, it’s largely used in video game development. In recent years, it’s become more of a mainstay in other areas of the world, and if a new report is correct, soon it’ll also be in Teslas. Long-time hacker GreenTheOnly revealed updates to code that indicate Unreal Engine graphics are coming soon to Model S and Model X.

Read: Watch Sony Exec Drive Afeela EV With A PlayStation Controller

“Tesla is adding Unreal Engine-based AP viz (the one you see today is Godot-based). The binaries are already shipping, starting from firmware 2025.20 only on AMD-based S and X cars for now,” he said in a post on X. After a bit of work, he managed to get the system working on the main infotainment screen.

It appears as though users will have the freedom to interact with the car graphic, spin it around, and open and close certain bits. We fully expect these same graphics to end up in the Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (Supervised) displays as well. One fan created what they expect it to look like, and you can see it below.

Cannot wait for tesla FSD Unreal Engine visual updates. Ray tracing on hw4 is gonna be bomb. pic.twitter.com/CD89WSCS7h

— Ian Smith 🟣 (@IanSamyth) August 8, 2025

Interestingly, Tesla isn’t leading the way or breaking new ground here. Rivian, Ford, Lotus, Volvo, and GMC all use Unreal Engine already, says The Verge. In fact, many will remember that GMC highlighted the technology during the launch of the Hummer EV. It’s a main part of how the large pickup displays mode changes, status updates, and other general information. Considering how good the display looks, it will probably be a welcome addition for Tesla users in the near future.

Ok, I am having a bit of trouble getting unreal engine to activate on the cluster, but it looks like on the main screen the car avatar is also controlled by it.
Now you can interact with it and it's getting somewhat more detailed.

Chery’s Latest SUV Wants To Be A Porsche Until You See The Rear

  • New Exeed Exlantix E05 is a range-extended SUV debuting in Munich next month.
  • The interior includes three screens, wireless chargers, and a floating center console.
  • Power comes from a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor.

One of Chery’s many sub-brands, Exeed, has just previewed its latest model, known as the Exlantix E05. Set to make its global debut at next month’s Munich Motor Show, the attractive SUV will be sold with a range-extender powertrain and, unlike many other new vehicles coming out of China, should be offered internationally.

Viewed from the front, the shape of the headlights immediately reminds us of the current ICE-powered Porsche Macan, except the lights of the E05 are a little more intricate, each complete with three LED daytime running lights. The main headlamps are then positioned vertically on either side of the small front grille.

Read: Chery Launches New Pickup Brand To Rival Toyota Hilux On Global Stage

While the front half of the SUV looks quite sleek, the rear looks a little bulbous and has been showcased with relatively understated LED taillights. Look closely, and you may also notice the Exlantix E05 comes standard with a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor.

Early information out of China reveals the E05 is 4,780 mm (188.1 inches) long, 1,890 mm (74.4 inches) wide, and stands 1,725 mm (67.9 inches) tall with a 2,800 mm (110.2-inch) wheelbase.

Simple Cabin with Many Screens

Like so many new vehicles from China, the interior is quite minimalist and tech-focused. Positioned in front of the two-spoke steering wheel is a small digital instrument cluster, while in the center of the dash is a large infotainment screen. Exeed has then added an expansive display in front of the passenger.

Chery’s Latest SUV Wants To Be A Porsche Until You See The Rear

Other key interior details include two cupholders, a pair of wireless phone chargers, and a pass-through storage area under the center console.

As the new model has yet to be showcased in full, many technical details remain unconfirmed. However, regulatory filings have revealed it’ll use a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine alongside an electric motor. The engine will deliver 154 hp (115 kW), but it’s unclear how much power the electric motor delivers.

The New Acura RSX Will Test How Much Fans Can Handle Change

  • Acura RSX Prototype previews an electric Coupe SUV arriving in the second half of 2026.
  • It rides on Honda’s Global EV Platform with dual motors and a sport-tuned chassis setup.
  • The new model will feature the new Asimo OS and be built in Ohio alongside the Integra.

A few weeks ago, a 25-year-old Integra coupe sold for $204,000. Not a typo. That kind of nostalgia tax speaks volumes about the staying power of Acura’s old coupes The Integra gave way to the RSX in 2001, which disappeared by 2006, but the nostalgia clearly stuck. Now, nearly two decades later, the RSX name is back, just don’t expect it to be anything like you remember.

Instead of a liftback coupe, the RSX nameplate returns in the form of an electric coupe SUV. Previewed by the Acura RSX Prototype, the vehicle will become the first to use Honda’s in-house global EV platform and will enter production in the second half of 2026.

Evolved Styling

Essentially a pre-production model, the crossover was unveiled at the Monterey Car Week as an evolution of last year’s Acura Performance EV Concept. This time, the exterior looks noticeably closer to production, featuring slightly thicker pillars, larger camera-based mirror units, and flush-mounted door handles.

More: Acura Finally Gave The Integra What It Needed All Along And It Wasn’t Power

While the prototype keeps the coupe-SUV silhouette of the earlier concept, a few design tweaks have brought it closer to reality. The bumpers and lighting elements have been updated, and it now rides on more practical 21-inch alloy wheels, down from the concept’s flashy 23-inch set. Finished in Propulsion Yellow Pearl with glossy black trim and red Brembo brakes, the RSX certainly isn’t shy.

At the front, the lower portion of the split LED headlights is hidden, while the central intake creates a smiley face. Along the sides, prominent vents on the front doors and sculpted shoulders add definition, while the rear sports a fastback-style tail with full-width taillights and a neatly integrated ducktail spoiler, which gives off strong Tesla Model Y ‘Juniper’ vibes.

Acura

A New Direction for Acura Design

Yasutake Tsuchida, Acura’s Creative Director and VP of American Honda R&D, described the RSX as “a sporty coupe style that expresses performance through excellent aerodynamics.” He added that this new model will help redefine Acura’s brand identity around “timeless beauty and a high-tech feel that is essential for a performance and unique brand.”

The interior remains under wraps for now, so there’s no word yet on the digital interface or layout. What is confirmed, however, is that the RSX will debut Honda’s new Asimo Operating System. This software is designed to learn from the driver’s habits and preferences, adapting the in-car experience to suit individual needs.

New EV Platform Promises Sporty Driving Dynamics

The New Acura RSX Will Test How Much Fans Can Handle Change

Unlike the Acura ZDX, which relies on GM-sourced hardware, the RSX will ride on Honda’s proprietary global EV architecture. It will be equipped with dual electric motors and all-wheel drive, with Acura promising a responsive, engaging driving experience.

A sport-tuned suspension with front double wishbones, a low center of gravity, and Brembo braking hardware round out the performance-focused package. The RSX will also feature Acura’s latest driver assistance tech and serve as a mobile energy storage solution, an increasingly common EV perk.

When Is It Coming?

The Acura RSX Prototype will be on display at The Quail on August 15 and at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 17. The production version is expected to launch in the second half of 2026 and will be positioned below the larger, existing ZDX, which starts at $64,500.

Acura has confirmed that the RSX will be built at the Honda EV Hub in Ohio, using a combination of domestic and globally sourced parts. The Marysville Auto Plant, which also produces the Integra, will handle assembly and is equipped to support gas, hybrid, and fully electric models.

Lucid Only Registered 9 Gravity SUVs In Six Months? That’s Not The Whole Story

  • Only nine Lucid Gravity SUVs were registered in Jan-June, industry data shows.
  • The EV startup sold almost 4,800 Air sedans during the same period.
  • Lucid said there’s a lag in the data, and it had sold “multiple hundreds” of SUVs.

Sales of Lucid’s Air sedan are growing, and its new, high-riding Gravity brother has met with rave reviews, so why are sales of the SUV so awful?

That’s a question you might ask after learning that a pathetic nine examples of the theoretically more on-trend EV in Lucid’s lineup were registered in the first six months of 2025. The figures, first reported by Auto News, come from S&P Global Mobility, whose data set also confirmed the Air logged 4,780 registrations in the same period.

Related: Lucid Prepares An SUV That’s Built For More Than The Highway

Lucid sedan sales were up 52 percent year-on-year, but far more people want to buy SUVs than traditional-shaped four-door cars these days, so the nine-unit Gravity tally was disappointing to say the least.

“The Gravity nails its mission,” wrote Car and Driver after testing the $96,550 utility, praising its speed, range, and cargo space. But since the ultimate mission of any automaker is to sell cars, S&P GM’s numbers suggested it hadn’t nailed, but failed, its mission.

Lucid Pushes Back

Unlike U.S. President Donald Trump did upon hearing less than favorable job statistics, Lucid didn’t have a meltdown and demand the head of S&P GM’s adder-upper. But it did claim to Auto News reporters that the nine-cars figure was wildly inaccurate. The real numbers are in the “multiple hundreds,” it said in an email to the website.

Lucid Only Registered 9 Gravity SUVs In Six Months? That’s Not The Whole Story
Lucid

Lucid explained the huge disparity between the two numbers as resulting from a lag between the date on which vehicles are sold and the date on which they’re registered.

The Gravity entered production in December 2024, but 2025’s first quarter production was ringfenced for showroom models and demo drives. Customers didn’t begin to get their own SUVs until spring, and even then, the production ramp-up was happening slower than anticipated, interim CEO Marc Winterhoff told AN in June. The loss-making company also trimmed its 2025 production forecast.

More Trims, More Volume to Come

Currently, the Gravity is only available in GT trim with 828 hp (840 PS / 617 kW) and a 450-mile (724 km) EPA range, but a year from now, with SUV production in full swing, the numbers will look very different, and registrations should relegate the Air sedan to a side-man.

The Mustang Mach-E Crash Wasn’t Autonomous After All Say Police. It Was Something Else

  • A Mustang Mach-E was filmed scraping a highway wall before crashing into another vehicle.
  • TikTok video shows the driver with hands off the wheel, seemingly praying before the collision.
  • CHP says Mustang Mach-E was not in autonomous mode before the viral highway crash.

Update: Ford told us that while they are still investigating the incident, they referred us to a statement from the California Highway Patrol’s Redwood City Area office. The CHP confirmed it was aware of the video circulating on social media and said the Mustang Mach-E driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The agency reported that the crash happened on August 13, 2025, at about 1:08 p.m. on US-101 southbound, just south of Holly Street in San Carlos. “The preliminary investigation indicates the driver of a green Ford Mustang Mach E crashed into a red Mitsubishi Mirage then collided with the right shoulder wall near the Holly Street overcrossing,” the release states.

Investigators determined the vehicle “was not operating in autonomous mode,” and officers arrested the driver “on suspicion of driving under the influence, resulting in injuries to another.”

Original story follows below.

An unusual and unsettling crash involving a Ford Mustang Mach-E unfolded yesterday in the San Francisco Bay Area. Captured on video by a nearby driver, the electric crossover was seen speeding down the highway while scraping along the side wall, just moments before colliding with another vehicle at an entrance ramp.

More: “We Can’t Figure Out How Anyone Could Have Walked Away From This” Say Firefighters After Driver Vanishes

The footage, recorded by a commuter heading to work in San Carlos, shows a green Mach-E with its hazard lights flashing, grinding against the wall. Inside, the driver appears alert but has both hands raised and off the wheel, seemingly in a state of distress or prayer.

Unexpected Impact

The situation escalated quickly as the vehicle reached an on-ramp. With no guardrail to stop its path, the Mach-E veered into what appears to be a red Mitsubishi Mirage merging from the right. The impact caused the smaller car to roll over. Both vehicles came to a stop with airbags deployed. According to TikTok user Marty.Byrde3 who filmed the scene, both drivers escaped without serious injuries.

The viral clip has already racked up around half a million views on TikTok in just a few hours. Commenters are baffled as to why the Mach-E driver could not regain control using the steering wheel or brakes, which typically override the vehicle’s electric drive system.

Reddit

Still More Questions Than Answers

From the video, it’s difficult to determine whether the vehicle was malfunctioning or if the driver was unable to take control for another reason, such as experiencing a medical episode or simply panicking.

Even in the event of a serious fault with the BlueCruise driver assistance system, like a locked steering wheel, the gas and brake pedals should still have been responsive. It’s also strange that the automatic emergency braking system didn’t activate when the car first hit the barrier or just before the final collision.

More: Tesla Pierced Front To Back And Somehow That’s Not Even The Craziest Part

In critical situations like this, drivers can attempt an emergency stop by repeatedly pressing the parking brake button, though it’s unknown whether that was tried. The witness notes that earlier, the Mach-E had been riding the central barrier, suggesting the driver might have been using physical contact with the walls to slow the car down.

Carscoops has reached out to Ford for comment on the incident and will update this story if they respond.

Chevrolet’s Newest EV Sure Looks Familiar

  • The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt has been spied undisguised, ahead of a debut later this year.
  • Despite going away for a few years, the ‘new’ model is essentially a facelifted Bolt EUV.
  • The upcoming crossover will have LFP batteries and a Supercharger-friendly NACS port.

Chevrolet recently kicked off the teaser campaign for the 2027 Bolt and now spy photographers have caught the model completely undisguised. However, there isn’t much to get excited about as it’s essentially a facelifted version of the previous Bolt EUV.

The model is instantly recognizable, but adopts a new front fascia with an X-like accent. The intake has also been updated as it trades horizontal lines for a more stylish honeycomb mesh pattern. Furthermore, the lighting units receive subtle tweaks, while there’s a less pronounced nose with a small bowtie logo.

More: GM Brings Back America’s Cheapest EV With A Few New Tricks

The profile appears straight out of 2022, but we wouldn’t be surprised if there are small changes. This could include new wheels and lightly revised cladding.

The prototype was spied testing alongside the Bolt EUV and this allows for an easy rear end comparison. The liftgate and spoiler appear to carryover, but there are new taillights with a more eye-catching appearance. They’re joined by a classier bumper, which features additional paint and slimmer reflectors. We can also see a thin section that appears to have a black geometric pattern.

Chevrolet’s Newest EV Sure Looks Familiar

Chevrolet hasn’t said much about the model, which originally went out of production in December of 2023. However, they recently confirmed it will have a NACS charging port and “some other cool stuff.”

The Bolt will ride on the BEV2 platform and feature lithium iron phosphate batteries that are initially sourced from CATL. This has been billed as a “two-year stopgap” measure until US production ramps up.

We’ll learn more in the coming months, but the 2023 Bolt EUV had a 65 kWh battery pack that powered a front-mounted motor developing 200 hp (149 kW / 203 PS) and 266 lb-ft (360 Nm) of torque. This setup enabled the model to have an EPA-estimated range of 247 miles (398 km).

Chevrolet has said the Bolt will become their most affordable electric vehicle and this means it will slot beneath the popular Equinox EV. The crossover starts at $33,600 before a $1,395 destination fee.

Rivian Could Be Planning A Big Handling Surprise For Its Next-Gen EVs

  • Rivian job listing hints at rear-wheel steering and steer-by-wire system development.
  • The R1T and R1S were only updated last year, so they may not receive the new tech.
  • Adding rear-wheel steering will help to reduce the turning circles of its EVs dramatically.

In addition to developing a steer-by-wire system, Rivian also appears to be working on rear-wheel steering, two features that could significantly impact how its EVs handle. That said, there’s no clear timeline for when these updates might roll out, so current Rivian owners probably don’t need to consider trading in their vehicles just yet.

News about Rivian’s latest developments doesn’t come from a press release or a comment made by an executive, but rather from a job listing that the automaker recently posted. In the listing, it says it is looking for an engineer to join the Vehicle Hardware Engineering – Chassis – Product Development team.

Their work will include the product development of important chassis steering hardware components, “such as steer by wire, rear wheel steering, and advanced ADAS steering technologies.”

Rivian Could Be Planning A Big Handling Surprise For Its Next-Gen EVs

Given that the current R1S and R1T are both big vehicles with a keen focus on off-roading, it’s somewhat surprising they don’t already have a rear-wheel steering system. The Tesla Cybertruck debuted with rear-wheel steering a couple of years ago, helping its maneuverability on tight trails, as well as in carparks and on the road.

Following In The Footsteps of Tesla and Lexus

Adding steer-by-wire also seems like a logical development for Rivian to make, allowing i t to completely remove any physical link between the steering wheel and the wheels. Like Tesla and Lexus, it would need to add redundancies in case the system fails. Steer-by-wire would also allow Rivian to adjust the steering ratio depending on vehicle speed, something both Tesla and Lexus have done.

As mentioned, there’s no word on when the systems could be ready, but if Rivian is only now starting work on them, they’ll likely still be a few years out. They could conceivably debut on the R1T and R1S, although they were only recently updated, meaning another significant update would be needed. The smaller R2 and R3 are also possible candidates for the new steering systems.
