Nissan’s New EV Embraces Its MINI Side

  • A camouflaged prototype of the upcoming Nissan Micra EV made its spy debut in Europe.
  • The fully electric supermini will be produced by Renault, as a sister model to the R5 E-Tech.
  • The five-door hatchback boasts round LEDs on both ends and a compact footprint.

Nissan has several projects in the pipeline right now, and one of the more interesting ones is the fully electric Micra. A camouflaged prototype of the small hatchback was spotted testing ahead of its European market launch in 2026. The Micra will be manufactured by Renault, sharing its underpinnings with the upcoming R5 E-Tech.

While we’ve seen glimpses of the new Micra’s exterior design in official teasers over the past few years, the spy shots are our first real look at the model. The proportions, roof structure, and overall greenhouse seem to mirror the Renault version, but the bodywork has been completely reworked.

Design Influences and Unique Features

The round headlights of the Nissan Micra are similar to those on the Mini Cooper, which also has an electric variant. However, Nissan has thankfully put its own spin on things like body-colored inserts and a grille-less front end. The bumper features a single cooling intake, and it looks like the black accents from the teaser images are actually fully blocked off.

Other interesting design touches include the round LED taillights, hidden rear door handles, and futuristic four-spoke alloy wheels. The sub-4m long, five-door hatchback will also feature glossy black cladding around the wheel arches, keeping in line with the current trends in automotive design.

Powertrain and Battery

The Nissan Micra will ride on the AmpR Small platform, already used by the Renault 5 E-Tech and the Alpine A290 hot hatch. It’s expected to offer a choice between 40 kWh and 52 kWh battery packs, with the larger pack providing a range of over 400 km (250 miles).

More: Mitsubishi’s American EV Will Be A Nissan In Disguise

In terms of power, the Micra could mirror the Renault 5’s options, with a single electric motor producing 94 hp (70 kW / 95 PS), 121 hp (90 kW / 122 PS), or 148 hp (110 kW / 150 PS). A future performance version of the Micra, partly inspired by the extreme Nissan Concept 20-23, might even borrow the 217 hp (160 kW / 220 PS) motor from the Alpine, though Nissan’s financial situation might put a damper on that idea, as a low-volume hot hatch would require a substantial investment.

Pricing and Availability

Given the Renault 5 E-Tech’s pricing, we can expect the electric Nissan Micra to start at around €25,000 (about $28,200 at current exchange rates) when it launches in Europe next year. Beyond the Micra, Nissan has more electric offerings in the pipeline for Europe, including a zero-emission version of the Juke and a new-generation Leaf crossover. There are also reports that the company is developing an even smaller and more affordable urban EV, based on the upcoming Renault Twingo E-Tech.

This Is One MINI We Can Get Into

  • Delta4x4 and X-Raid have created a wide-body Mini Countryman with off-road upgrades.
  • The rugged build is currently a concept, but the company is open to limited-series production.
  • The study appears to be based on the EV version, but it’s likely to be compatible with ICE as well.

The Mini Countryman is typically thought of as a road-focused SUV, but thanks to off-road experts Delta4x4 and the Dakar-winning team X-Raid, it’s been reimagined into something far more extreme, yet still street-legal beast. This radical conversion, currently presented as a digital concept, could potentially be brought to life in limited numbers if enough interest is generated.

More: BMW’s M2 Dakar Concept Is So Good It Hurts That It’s Just An April Fool’s Joke

The two companies recently showed a Mini Countryman X-Raid tuning package, which included a raft of upgrades like new wheels, tires, a suspension lift, and some eye-catching orange decals. These tweaks were only a warm-up, though, and they soon dove into creating a version inspired by X-Raid’s rally-winning desert warriors.

From April Fool’s Joke to Real Project

According to X-Raid, the idea started as an April Fool’s joke, but it quickly evolved into a real project. The highlight of the exterior are the front and rear fender extensions that add 200 mm (7.9 inches) of width to the compact SUV. A bull bar protects the front bumper from minor collisions, while extra LEDs on the grille and roof will turn night into day.

The roof rack provides extra space for overlanding equipment such as snow tracks, a full-size spare wheel, and a couple of tanks. Furthermore, Delta4x4 has added Defender-style storage compartments on the rear side windows, and decorative belts on the hood and tailgate. As a finishing touch, the body is wrapped in a matte gray shade with orange graphics.

\\\\\\\\\\

Delta4x4 / Facebook

Underneath the Mini Countryman, things are looking even more serious. It now rolls on 18-inch Delta4x4 Hanma alloy wheels wrapped in heavy-duty all-terrain rubber by Loder. Combined with a rally-tuned suspension that adds an extra 50 mm (2 inches) of ground clearance, this SUV is ready for more than just the occasional gravel road.

More: Dacia Duster Soul Of Dakar Concept Could Inspire Future Special Edition Models

X-Raid hasn’t mentioned any performance upgrades, but judging by the rendering, the base model appears to be the fully electric Mini Countryman SE All4. This version comes with a dual-motor AWD setup that produces 308 hp (230 kW / 313 PS) and is powered by a 66.5 kWh battery, providing a range of 212 miles (341 km). That said, the modifications are likely compatible with any variant of the Countryman, including the hybrid turbocharged 2.0-liter engine version.

A Limited-Edition Possibility

While the vehicle is still a concept, X-Raid and Delta4x4 have hinted at the possibility of “small-scale production” if customer demand is high enough. Hopefully, the renders will resonate with the more adventurous kind of Mini Countryman owners, bringing the Dakar-inspired build on the road. Despite its wild stance, the company has confirmed that this is a “street-legal package”.

Earlier reports also suggest that Mini itself is also working on a more rugged version of the Countryman, though details about that are still vague at best. For now, we’ll have to wait and see if this wild rendition becomes a reality.

Mitsubishi’s American EV Will Be A Nissan In Disguise

  • A Mitsubishi version of the Nissan Leaf EV will reach North America in summer 2026.
  • Mitsubishi wants to strengthen its collaboration with Nissan on electrified vehicles.
  • Another EV developed by Foxconn will debut in Australia in the second half of 2026.

Mitsubishi is stepping up its EV game with not one, but two new electric models on the horizon, both of which are slated to arrive in the second half of 2026, each targeting a different market, First up, there’s an electric crossover inspired by the upcoming Nissan Leaf, which will be offered in North America. Then, Mitsubishi is also teaming up with Foxconn to develop a separate EV aimed at the Australian market.

More: Nissan Is Considering A Rugged New Truck-Based SUV

The Leaf-based crossover is expected to hit dealers in the U.S. and Canada by summer 2026. As the official teaser suggests, it will closely resemble the new Nissan Leaf, adopting a similar crossover silhouette with a sloping roofline and an identical LED lighting signature. For now, it’s unclear if there will be any other noticeable differences between this Mitsubishi EV and its Nissan counterpart, aside from the Mitsubishi badges.

Key Features of the Leaf-Based EV

This new EV will sit on the CMF-EV platform, the same one found under the upcoming Nissan Leaf, and will feature a single electric motor. That means, like the slightly larger Nissan Ariya, there won’t be an all-wheel-drive option here. However, Mitsubishi has confirmed that the Leaf-based model will include a NACS charging port and is targeting a range of over 300 miles (482 km).

In return, Mitsubishi is helping Nissan with a plug-in hybrid version of the Nissan Rogue (X-Trail), which is expected to arrive in 2026 as a rebadged version of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. The Rogue plug-in hybrid will sit alongside gasoline and self-charging hybrid variants, with different styling cues to set them apart. Mitsubishi’s goal, of course, is to “strengthen its partnership with Nissan” through electrified vehicles.

In addition to expanding its EV lineup, Mitsubishi’s Momentum 2030 plan also includes a new approach to retail sales and an expanded dealer network in North America. This effort is designed to boost sales across the region.

New Foxtron-Developed EV for Australia

Mitsubishi has also signed a memorandum of understanding with Foxtron, an electric vehicle subsidiary of tech-giant Foxconn, confirming earlier reports about a potential collaboration. The result will be a new Mitsubishi EV that will be developed by Foxtron and manufactured by Yulon Motor in Taiwan.

More: Foxconn Will Build EVs In The US But You’ll Never See Its Name On Them

The yet-unnamed model will be introduced in Australia and New Zealand in the second half of 2026. Mitsubishi claims it will have “excellent driving performance as an EV”, adding that it will be equipped with “an advanced infotainment system”. While not confirmed, the new model could be a rebadged version of the Pininfarina-designed Foxtron Model B, first shown in 2022.

While the deal sounds nearly finalized, both Mitsubishi and Foxtron have stated they will continue discussions before sealing the deal. Beyond the Foxtron-developed EV for Oceania, Mitsubishi’s broader strategy includes its own developed models for ASEAN, Renault-based models for Europe, and Nissan-based models for North America.

Hyundai’s New Electric SUV Breaks Away from The Ioniq Lineup

  • The Elexio is the first EV developed in China by the Beijing Hyundai joint venture.
  • This fully electric SUV features a design distinct from Hyundai’s Ioniq lineup.
  • Built on the E-GMP architecture, the Elexio promises a 435-mile (700 km) range.

At this point, it feels like Hyundai releases a new electric model every few weeks. But don’t worry, this one’s actually a little different. Meet the fully electric Elexio, a new SUV developed specifically for the Chinese market. It’s the latest creation from Beijing Hyundai, the joint venture with BAIC Motor, and it promises to deliver the latest tech and over 700 km (435 miles) of range on a single charge.

The SUV, which ditches the familiar Ioniq branding for a fresh name, made its debut at a special event in Shanghai. Hyundai plans to reveal the technical specifications at a later date. While the vehicle’s dimensions haven’t been disclosed yet, it seems to have a more compact footprint compared to the Hyundai Ioniq 9 available in other markets including North America.

Interestingly, the Elexio adopts a new design language that sets it apart from the Ioniq lineup. The front end features a grille-less look with sporty bumper intakes, complemented by a full-width LED bar below the horizontally mounted headlights. The profile stands out with sculpted fenders and a dark-finished D-pillar, which is visually connected to the rear spoiler. At the rear, the Elexio boasts high-mounted full-width LEDs, bold lettering, and some graphic elements on the bumper.

While Hyundai didn’t show any photos of the interior, they teased an “intelligent interface” with no physical buttons, alongside a new digital instrument cluster. The infotainment system will run on the Qualcomm SA8295 chip, delivering the latest connectivity features.

Inside, the design is said to focus on simplicity, with plenty of storage compartments. As for safety, the Elexio will be equipped with a range of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), offering Level 2+ autonomous driving capabilities.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Powertrain and Range

The new SUV rides on the E-GMP architecture, which already underpins numerous electric models from Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis. While the company didn’t share any details about the number of electric motors or their output, we do know that the platform is compatible with single- and dual-motor setups.

More: Hyundai Plans To ‘Sell Like Hell’ And Tariffs Can’t Stop It

A battery of yet-to-be-revealed capacity is expected to provide over 700 km (435 miles) of range under normal conditions, though this figure is likely based on the Chinese CTLC testing protocols. The battery will also feature rapid charging, able to go from 30-80% in just 27 minutes. It’s housed in a reinforced structure that meets the crash safety standards.

Manufacturing and Future Plans

The new Elexio will be manufactured in China by Beijing Hyundai, with a local market launch expected in the coming months. Whether it will be offered outside China has not yet been confirmed.

Earlier this year, Hyundai announced a $1.1 billion investment in its joint venture with BAIC. This move aims to deliver electrified products tailored to the needs of Chinese customers while boosting exports. With declining sales in China due to intense local competition, Hyundai is hoping vehicles like the Elexio will help restore its foothold in the world’s largest automotive market.

Ford’s Mysterious New Bronco SUV Surfaces In China And It’s Unlike Anything Else

  • Ford is set to launch a new addition to the Bronco family in the Chinese market.
  • A camouflaged prototype of the upcoming SUV has made its spy debut in China.
  • It seems to feature a unibody architecture, paired with an electrified powertrain.

Ford’s Bronco family is about to get a whole lot bigger, and it looks like China will be the first to see the new addition. A camouflaged SUV sporting Bronco badges and styling has been spotted in China, giving us an early glimpse of an upcoming high-riding model from Ford. This SUV is clearly a departure from the US-spec Bronco Sport and will join the mid-size five-door Bronco already on sale in China.

More: Chinese Galaxy Battleship Floats Two Hours Straight While Pretending It’s A Defender

This mysterious SUV was included in Ford’s latest product plan for China, which was announced just last month. While the official announcement kept things vague, spy shots from Autohome have given us a few juicy details about what could be the third member of Ford’s ever-expanding Bronco family.

Design Details and Familiar Features

The camouflaged prototype boasts a boxy, rugged design reminiscent of the growing number of SUVs from China. The headlights carry a Bronco Sport influence, though they forgo the signature round LED graphics. From the side, round fender flares, pop-out door handles, and an upright windshield with black pillars add to the vehicle’s bold look.

At the rear, a full-size spare tire and vertically stacked taillights bring to mind the Land Rover Defender, while the clear finish gives it a contemporary touch.

Moving inside, the Bronco identity shines through, highlighted by the emblem on the flat-bottom steering wheel. Though parts of the interior remain concealed, we can still make out a high-mounted center console featuring ample storage and a free-standing infotainment screen seamlessly integrated into the dashboard.

Size and Unibody Architecture

\\\\\\

Spy Shots Autohome

While the exact dimensions and positioning of this model remain unclear, it appears to be larger than the US-spec Ford Bronco Sport, which measures 4,387 mm (172.7 inches) long. This could be Ford’s response to the perceived preference of Chinese customers for bigger and roomier vehicles. For context, the five-door Bronco stretches to 4,800-4,825 mm (189-190 inches) in length.

A look underneath suggests that the SUV is based on a unibody architecture. This is probably the biggest point of differentiation from the regular Bronco that rides on a ladder-frame chassis sourced from the Ranger pickup. It remains to be seen whether this Chinese model will share its unibody foundation with the Bronco Sport, Escape/Kuga, and Focus, or if Ford has something entirely different in mind for its new Bronco variant.

A screenshot from Ford’s product plan presentation in China.

Elements such as the covered grille, the aero-friendly alloy wheels, and the dual ports on the rear fenders suggest that the SUV is fitted with an electrified powertrain, which would be a first for a Bronco-badged product. The setup could either be a plug-in hybrid or a range-extender, as both of them require the presence of a fuel port and a charging port.

A few details, like the covered grille, aero-friendly alloy wheels, and dual ports on the rear fenders, hint that this SUV might come with an electrified powertrain, which if true, would be a first for anything wearing the Bronco badge. This could mean a plug-in hybrid or a range-extender setup, as both would require both a fuel port and a charging port.

This new Bronco model is expected to be built in China, likely through one of Ford’s joint ventures with Changan or Jiangling Motors. Expect more details later this year, when the vehicle’s specs and images will likely be revealed through China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, ahead of its official market launch.

This Not-So-Serious Fake G-Class Sold For Seriously Real Money

  • The Bodo G-Wagon is an electric golf cart inspired by the Mercedes off-roader.
  • A 2024 model recently went under the hammer at Mecum’s Glendale auction.
  • This zero-emission electric cart offers 80 miles of range, perfect for golf courses.

Mercedes is working on a baby g-Class, aiming to bring the spirit of the original G-Wagen into the compact SUV market. But for those who can’t wait, an even smaller version of the iconic off-roader is already out there – well, sort of. This replica features a tiny electric motor and lacks any real off-road capabilities, but it still manages to carry the G-Class look.

Meet the Bodo G-Wagon. Technically, it’s a golf cart, so you can’t exactly take this one for a spin down the highway, but you can cruise around golf courses or gated communities, places where an actual G-Class would probably be overkill, both in size and fuel consumption.

More: Mansory’s Garia Supersport Golf Cart

Recently, a 2024 model of this golf cart variant went up for sale at Mecum’s Glendale auction and, surprisingly, it fetched a decent amount. It’s not hard to see why.

The exterior is a dead ringer for the popular off-roader, but the tiny wheels and cartoonish proportions quickly give it away. No matter how many Mercedes badges you slap on the grille, it’s clear this is no true G-Wagen. Still, the seller insisted that this is “infinitely more stylish” than your average golf cart, claiming it will help you stand out from the crowd. Well, sure, it definitely will.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Mecum

Inside, the Bodo G-Wagon tries to mimic luxury in its own way. The saddle-colored plastic on the seats looks vaguely like leather from a distance, but up close, it’s clear you’re sitting in something closer to a toy car than a luxury SUV. The listing claims it comes with “the amenities of a full-size car,” if you count things like a fully digital cockpit, rear screens for passengers, A/C, and a rear-view camera as top-tier features.

There’s also the usual golf cart fare, like power steering, turn signals, running lights, and power windows, things that might seem surprisingly high-tech for your average golf cart.

Zero-Emissions, Zero Thrills

Despite the AMG badges, the Bodo G-Wagon doesn’t hide a roaring V8 under the hood. In fact, it doesn’t even have a combustion engine, as this is a zero-emission vehicle. A single electric motor delivers a modest 20 horsepower (15 kW), pushing this mini G-Wagen to a top speed of 35 mph (56 km/h). No 0-60 times here, and don’t expect any high-speed thrills either.

It runs on a 10 kWh lithium battery, giving it a range of up to 80 miles (129 km) between charges. Considering the largest golf course in America is only 4.7 miles long, this EV has plenty of juice for its intended use.

A Pricey Toy

And that brings us to the price tag. The Bodo G-Wagon sold for $31,900 at the Glendale auction on March 21st, falling within the estimated range of $30,000 to $40,000.

For that kind of money, you could pick up a used Mercedes-Benz G-Class from the 2010s – like a real G-Class, not this golf cart impersonator. Or, if you’re after something more compact, a Suzuki Jimny with a G-Wagen body kit might scratch the itch, though good luck finding one in North America.

Someone Paid $3K For This Fake Bentley EV That Charges With Gas

  • The fake Bentley Bentayga combines an electric motor with a small range-extender engine.
  • A noisy combustion engine powers the battery when charging isn’t easily available nearby.
  • Manufactured in China, it is listed online with prices ranging from $2,500 to $3,100.

While China’s major automakers continue pushing the EV envelope with advanced tech and compelling price tags, a different breed of smaller manufacturers is still playing dress-up. Among the growing crowd of micro-EVs that unapologetically borrow from luxury brands like Bugatti, Porsche, Aston Martin, and Maserati, one tiny outlier stands out. This pint-sized oddity doesn’t just mimic a Bentley, it also comes with a surprise under the hood: a range-extender powertrain.

At the front, it’s doing its best impression of a mini Bentley Bentayga, featuring a large mesh-style grille and a pair of round LED headlights. Move to the side or rear and the illusion fades a bit, with a shape that’s closer to a Smart. The tiny wheels and off-kilter proportions won’t have anyone second-guessing what it actually is, but it’s entertaining all the same.

More: Tiny Rolls-Royce And Maybach Clones Are The Cutest Things You’ll See Today

What makes this vehicle a little more than just a visual gag is the inclusion of a small combustion engine that looks suspiciously like it was borrowed from a garden tool. In a video shared on Instagram by yaypan_lik, it can be seen sputtering to life and making more noise than a vehicle of this size probably should. That said, the engine isn’t connected to the wheels; it only works as a generator to feed the battery.

This setup means the car is still powered by a fully electric motor, which is far quieter and presumably more efficient than the gas-powered backup. The hybrid system makes practical sense in places with limited EV charging infrastructure. Fittingly, the clip was filmed in Uzbekistan, where plug-in access might be less reliable.

A Mini Bentley, A Micro Price Tag

According to the Instagram post, the car was priced at around $3,100 and apparently sold, although some commenters speculated the actual sale price may have been lower. A bit of digging shows that the faux Bentley is manufactured in Shandong, China, by Weihai Yilin New Energy Technology. Online listings show prices ranging from $2,500 to $3,100, consistent with the Uzbekistan post.

More: $11k Homemade Cybertruck Is Both Hilarious And Impressive

Measuring 3,850 mm (151.6 inches) in length, the Bentley doppelganger is technically a five-seater, although fitting that many adults inside would likely require some creative Tetris skills. Features include a digital cockpit, LED lights, a roof-mounted fan, heating, power windows, alloy wheels, and disc brakes on all four corners. There’s even a variant with a slightly tweaked exterior mimicking the front end of the Bentley Mulliner Batur, for those seeking an extra touch of fake exclusivity.

The electric motor is rated at 5 horsepower (3.5 kW), giving it a top speed of 45 km/h (28 mph). That puts it in the same performance bracket as heavy quadricycles like the Citroen Ami. As for the combustion engine, battery size, or range, those details are absent. But a full charge reportedly takes 8 to 10 hours.

Would You Buy It?

Of course, it’s not a real Bentley. It doesn’t drive like one, it doesn’t feel like one, and it definitely doesn’t come with the prestige. But for a few thousand dollars, it’s a bizarre, undeniably amusing way to get around the block. The real question is whether you’d choose this over a moped. And if your answer is yes, then maybe the tiny fake Bentley replica is doing something right.

Akio Toyoda Says EVs Are Dirtier Than You Think

  • Chairman Akio Toyoda emphasizes that carbon neutrality remains Toyota’s top priority.
  • He claims 27 million Toyota hybrids match the carbon impact of 9 million electric cars.
  • Toyoda argues EVs raise emissions when powered by fossil-fueled electricity, especially in Japan.

Electric vehicles may dominate headlines and political agendas, but the road to a cleaner future isn’t a one-way street. At least, not according to Toyota, the world’s best-selling brand and long-time champion of hybrid technology. While other automakers sprint toward full electrification, Toyota is still holding its ground, cautiously expanding its EV lineup while doubling down on hybrids.

More: Toyota’s New Electric Flagship Sedan Takes A Shot At Tesla Model S

Despite recent moves in China with the broader bZ series, Toyota has taken plenty of flak for its relatively slow EV rollout. But if you ask Chairman Akio Toyoda, there’s a method to what critics call hesitation. Known for his firm stance on a multi-energy strategy, Toyoda once again explained why Toyota hasn’t followed the all-electric herd.

In an recent interview with Automotive News, Toyoda said, “When the term carbon neutrality became popular, we said as a company the enemy is carbon. We have to focus on what we can do immediately to reduce carbon dioxide. That is the basis of our decision. It has not changed and will not change.”

Why Hybrids Still Matter

Toyoda also pointed to Toyota’s history with hybrid vehicles. “We have sold some 27 million hybrids,” he said. “Those hybrids have had the same impact as 9 million BEVs on the road. But if we were to have made 9 million BEVs in Japan, it would have actually increased the carbon emissions, not reduced them. That is because Japan relies on the thermal power plants for electricity.”

While the Toyota chairman didn’t break down the math behind those figures, he clearly wanted to show that EVs aren’t a silver bullet. Sure, battery electric vehicles offer zero tailpipe emissions, but that’s only part of the equation. The environmental impact of producing EVs and generating the electricity to charge them tells a more complicated story. Add to that the patchy state of charging infrastructure in many regions, and it becomes easier to understand why hybrids still make sense, at least for now.

Akio Toyoda Says EVs Are Dirtier Than You Think
The recently facelifted bZ4x is one of the three electric models in Toyota’s European lineup.

Toyota’s deep roots in hybrid development go back to the original Prius in 1997. Since then, hybrids have grown to become a major part of the company’s global sales. Today, hybrid variants are offered across nearly every Toyota model line. Demand is particularly strong in markets like Europe and North America, where self-charging hybrids are often seen as a practical, lower-commitment step toward electrification.

More: Toyota Throws Gasoline On ICE vs EV Debate, Why Go All Electric When We Can Do Both?

And while EVs continue to grab market share, there’s a sizable segment of buyers who remain unconvinced, whether that be due to cost, range anxiety, or lack of infrastructure. Toyota seems content to serve that middle ground.

A Broader Strategy, Not a U-Turn

Toyoda’s multi-pathway approach includes more than just hybrids. He’s also supporting plug-in hybrids, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, battery EVs, and even combustion engines powered by synthetic fuels. For Toyota, it’s less about betting on a single winner and more about keeping all options open.

“We should look at all options and work in all directions,” Toyoda said. “As a company, we have been very consistent in saying what we’re fighting against is carbon dioxide.”

This isn’t new rhetoric from Toyoda. Last year, he made headlines for suggesting that even in the long term, fully electric vehicles will only make up 30 percent of global sales. He also warned that a sudden shift to an EV-only future could put 5.5 million Japanese jobs at risk.

BYD’s SUV Rips Off Genesis So Hard You’ll Do A Double Take

  • The BYD Sea Lion 06 is a new electrified SUV from China with styling that feels familiar.
  • Its front end borrows heavily from Genesis, while the rear sports Bentley-inspired taillights.
  • Buyers can choose between single or dual electric motors, or a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

In a sea of reveals at the Shanghai Auto Show, it’s easy to miss a few standout vehicles, especially with the rapid-fire pace of new model debuts. But once the dust settles, a few interesting names float to the surface, one of them being the new BYD Sea Lion 06, a sharp-looking electrified SUV with a front end that feels like it wandered out of a Genesis design studio.

More: Denza Z Is An Electric 911 Rival With A Fold-Away Steering Wheel

The split LED headlights look straight out of the Korean luxury brand’s playbook, flanking a grille-free nose that closely resembles the refreshed Genesis GV60. But the Sea Lion 06 doesn’t go in for sleek coupe-SUV theatrics. Instead, it opts for a more upright SUV stance that gives it a bit more presence on the road, and maybe a bit more practicality too.

Design Details with Familiar Influences

A few other styling cues stand out, like the wraparound greenhouse and a set of full-width taillights that evolve the design language of the BYD Seal sedan. There’s even a nod to Bentley in the way the rear light bar is shaped, nothing over-the-top, but enough to suggest BYD’s designers have been paying attention to the high-end crowd.

Step inside, and it’s a familiar sight for anyone who’s looked at a modern Chinese EV. The centerpiece is a 15.6-inch infotainment screen mounted to the center of the dash, a setup that’s practically standard at this point. What does break up the usual formula is the floating center console, fitted with metallic-look switchgear that feels like another subtle Genesis reference. As expected from BYD, the Sea Lion 06 comes equipped with its in-house “God’s Eye” advanced driver assistance suite.

BYD

Underneath, the SUV rides on BYD’s updated e-Platform 3.0 Evo. Buyers can choose between a fully electric version or a plug-in hybrid (DM-i). The EV comes in both single-motor rear-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive configurations. Meanwhile, the plug-in hybrid pairs electric drive with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine. Despite these different drivetrains, the exterior remains identical across variants, BYD didn’t even tweak the wheel design for the sake of differentiation.

More: BYD Changes Course After Realizing Not Everyone Is Ready For EVs

As suggested by its name, the BYD Sea Lion 06 is positioned under the Sea Lion 07, although the difference in size between them is quite small. More specifically, the 06 measures 4,810 mm (189.4 inches) long, which is only 20 mm (0.8 inches) shorter than the 07. Still, the 2,820 mm (111.0 inches) wheelbase of the 06 is a 110 mm (4.3 inches) shorter than that of the 07.

Even so, the Sea Lion 06 has a bigger footprint than rivals like the Tesla Model Y and the Genesis GV60, and its shape suggests it might be more suited to family duties than some of its sleeker competitors.

As for pricing, BYD is aiming squarely at the value segment. In China, the Sea Lion 06 is expected to land between ¥160,000 and ¥200,000, which translates to roughly $22,000 to $27,500. Whether this electrified SUV makes its way to markets outside China, such as Europe, remains to be seen.

Jeep is setting its sights on a bigger, broader market with the next-generation Compass, a compact model that’s poised to become the brand’s most globally available vehicle yet. The redesigned Compass boasts a more rugged, modern look and has grown in nearly every dimension. It now sits on the new Stellantis platform and offers a variety of electrified powertrains, from mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid to fully electric versions.

More: Citroen Just Put The Biggest Screen Ever In A Stellantis Model

On the outside, the new Compass adopts a more chiseled appearance. It takes design cues from both its smaller sibling, the Euro-market Avenger, and the larger Wagoneer S, sporting sharp fenders, crisp LED lights, and ultra-slim front intakes. The SUV’s stance is enhanced by boxy wheel arches and generous plastic cladding. Shorter front and rear overhangs give the Compass a more nimble, agile appearance, particularly when compared to its predecessor.

Additionally, the Compass benefits from an improved drag coefficient, thanks to aerodynamic tweaks like active grille shutters.

And because Jeep is all about that “nature-inspired” vibe, the new Compass comes in six colors that sound like they were plucked straight from a travel brochure. We’ve got Hawaii Green, Pacific Blue, Antarctica White, Amazonia Brown, Yosemite Grey, and Volcano Black.

Interior Design

\\\\\

Inside, Jeep has made a noticeable leap in both design and technology. The cockpit features a 10-inch display for the instrument cluster, paired with a large 16-inch infotainment screen. These are neatly arranged above a row of buttons and a rotary knob. The center console and dashboard are accented with aluminum-style finishes, and there’s plenty of storage space for your gear.

Powertrains and Platform

One of the key features of the new Jeep Compass is the STLA Medium architecture, shared with other Stellantis products like the Peugeot 3008/5008, the Opel Grandland, and the Citroen C5 Aircross.

The Compass is now longer, wider, and with a longer wheelbase. It measures 4,550 mm (179.1 inches) in length, 1,928 mm (75.9 inches) in width (+85 mm), and has a 160 mm (+6.2 inches) longer wheelbase at 2,795 mm (110.0 inches). This results in 55 mm (2.2 inches) more legroom, a 34-liter (1.2 cubic feet) front interior storage compartment, and a 45-liter (1.6 cubic feet) increase in boot capacity, now topping out at 550 liters (19.4 cubic feet).

The real news here, though, is the expanded engine range. The Compass will offer a variety of electrified powertrains, including e-Hybrid, e-Hybrid plug-in, and fully electric models. For markets outside Europe, non-electrified gasoline powertrains could still make an appearance, but for now, the emphasis is on electric. Both front- and all-wheel-drive variants will be available.

At launch in Europe, customers will have the choice of a 145-hp 48V Hybrid, a 195-hp Hybrid Plug-in, or three fully electric models. The electric options range from a 213-hp front-wheel drive version up to a beefy 375 hp in the all-wheel-drive version. To achieve that output in the AWD model, Jeep has developed a new, more powerful rear electric motor, specifically designed for the Compass, offering an additional 49 kW of peak power and up to 232 Nm of torque.

\\\\\\\\\\\\

Charging and Range

When it comes to charging, the Compass is equipped with a 160 kW DC fast-charging solution, allowing it to go from 20% to 80% in just 30 minutes. It also features an onboard charger that supports up to 22 kW. As for range, the fully electric models can travel up to an impressive 650 km (404 miles) on the WLTP cycle.

In FWD form the new Compass offers a ground clearance of up to 200 mm, with a 20° approach angle, a 15° breakover angle, and a 26° departure angle. Jeep promises it’s more than capable of handling tough terrain, and it also boasts a water fording depth of up to 470 mm. All versions come standard with Selec-Terrain, delivering 360-degree protection similar to the Avenger.

Review: Jeep Avenger Proves ICE And Manual Combo Can Still Be Compelling

The all-wheel-drive versions are even more capable, thanks to an enhanced design that boosts the approach angle to 27°, the breakover angle to 16°, and the departure angle to 31°. Ground clearance and water fording ability are also improved. Hill descent control comes standard on all-wheel-drive models.

First Edition and Availability

To kick things off, Jeep will offer the First Edition of the Compass, available for order now in Europe. Customers can choose between the 48V e-Hybrid with 145 hp or the fully electric FWD model with 213 hp and a 500 km (310-mile) driving range. Deliveries are expected to begin in Q4 of 2025.

Stellantis has confirmed that production of the new Compass will begin in Italy in late 2025. While North American models were originally slated to roll off the line in Canada starting in 2026, delays related to U.S. tariffs on imported vehicles have reportedly pushed back the launch for that market.

Toyoda Shuts Down EV Sports Cars, Prefers Smells And Sounds Of Gas Anyway

  • Akio Toyoda suggested that the future GR lineup will likely exclude electric sports cars.
  • The chairman and master driver favors the sound and smell of gasoline engines over EVs.
  • An electric GR model could arrive only if Toyota is able to offer it at an affordable price.

Toyota GR is on track to offer one of the most exciting sports car lineups among mainstream automakers, but it looks like none of them will be fully electric. Chairman Akio Toyoda made it clear that his definition of a sports car is “something with the smell of gasoline and a noisy engine,” which means electric powertrains are off the table for Gazoo Racing, at least for the near future.

Toyoda,  grandson of Toyota Motor Corp. founder Kiichiro Toyoda, who has earned the unofficial title of “master driver”, holds the final say on what makes a Lexus a Lexus and a Toyota a Toyota. Under his leadership, the Japanese automaker has undergone a transformation, becoming a brand that genuinely cares about driving enthusiasts.

More: Toyota GR Will Keep Gas Engines And Manuals Alive For A “Long, Long Time”

He’s brought Toyota back to the top of motorsports while sprinkling some rally-car magic into production models like the GR Yaris and GR Corolla. With the upcoming debuts of an MR2 successor, a revived Celica, and a GR-branded supercar, Toyoda recently shared his thoughts on the future of performance EVs.

No Electric Dreams, For Now

In an interview with Auto News, Toyoda was asked whether he could imagine a future where Toyota builds an electric sports car or race car. His response was as classic as you’d expect: “There will always be people inside Toyota passionate about developing electric sports cars. But for me as the master driver, my definition of a sports car is something with the smell of gasoline and a noisy engine.”

2023 Toyota FT-Se Concept

These comments pretty much crush any hopes of seeing a production version of the electricToyota FT-Se concept from 2023, which many thought might preview a new generation of the discontinued MR2. Toyota has been keeping the MR2 revival rumors alive with a mid-engined GR Yaris prototype, but instead of an electric powertrain, it’s packing the upcoming turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

An Electric Sports Car Needs to Be Affordable

Despite his preference for gas-engines, Toyoda hasn’t completely closed the door on EVs. He conceded that if the right conditions come together, an electric sports car could eventually make sense. But there’s a catch: it has to be affordable. “Toyota is a mass-production brand, so we also need to think about affordability, even with BEVs,” he explained. “Once Toyota has the capacity to offer affordable BEVs, then maybe that’s a moment when I, as a master driver, will be introducing a BEV sports car.”

More: Toyota’s New Electric Flagship Sedan Takes A Shot At Tesla Model S

The master driver isn’t exactly sold on electric race cars, at least not yet. He pointed out that racing EVs are “not exciting,” mainly because they can’t even make it around the circuit for more than an hour. “The kind of races I enter are mostly endurance races, so with current BEVs, it’s not going to be a race of the cars. It’s a race of charging time or battery exchanges or something,” he told Auto News.

For these reasons, he’s handed off the task of developing EV race cars to the next master driver, saying it will be “their job” to tackle.

Speaking of a potential successor, Toyoda did admit that his son, Daisuke, is the better driver. Still, Akio believes he has the upper hand when it comes to the “seasoning” of production models. After honing his driving skills under chief test driver Naruse at the ripe age of 40, Toyoda says he’s eager to see what his son, who started much younger, will bring to the table. “I look forward to seeing what will happen with someone who started young like Daisuke,” he said.

Mercedes Won’t Let Its Cars Look Like Appliances On Wheels, Thinks This Concept Proves It

  • Mercedes will unify electric and combustion car designs to avoid the “sea of sameness.”
  • Wagener stresses luxury cars should spark emotion, not just serve a functional purpose
  • The company plans 17 new or refreshed EVs by 2027, following its new design strategy.

Mercedes is in the midst of a design evolution, aiming to unify the styling language across both its electric and combustion vehicles. Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer for all brands under the Mercedes-Benz Group, says the company is determined to avoid the dreaded “sea of sameness” that’s overtaking the automotive world and steer clear of producing “appliances on wheels”. Or at least, that’s the plan.

Speaking with Autocar at the Shanghai Auto Show, Wagener dropped a few breadcrumbs about what’s next for the brand’s design direction. “The worst part of new design trends is having no identity,” he said, likely referencing the wave of rather uninspiring, cookie-cutter EVs flooding the Chinese market right now.

Luxury Means More Than Just Getting From A to B

For Wagener, standing out is even more critical in the premium segment. He explained, “When it comes to luxury, you start a love affair with the car. You attach emotion to it. You don’t just want an appliance that gets you from A to B.” He defined luxury as something that’s desired, not needed, adding that Mercedes doesn’t aim to make “appliances on wheels.”

Instead, the brand will focus on communicating “respect” through design, something Wagener believes buyers inherently associate with the Mercedes-Benz name. He explained, “You deserve some respect. You’ve made something out of yourself and you’ve been successful in life, so you deserve some respect for that.”

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

A Glimpse of the Future: Mercedes Vision V Concept

Wagener pointed to the new Mercedes Vision V concept, which was revealed at the Shanghai Auto Show, as an embodiment of this design philosophy. The concept previews the next-generation Mercedes V-Class and is built on the new VAN.EA architecture. Its exterior features an illuminated grille, cutting-edge LEDs, and sculpted bodywork. Inside, it’s decked out with a 65-inch screen and a ridiculous 42 speakers in what Wagener describes as a “private lounge interior.”

More: If You Thought The Star-Studded CLA Was Bad, Look At This Piece Of…Art

As for the grille, Wagener stressed that it’s a critical part of the Vision V’s design. “The iconic signature grille that nobody else has is important,” he said. But he also made it clear that bigger isn’t always better.

“You see a lot of big grilles out there, and this alone is not necessary. Respect probably has to do with the sublime. When you look at buildings, churches, temples, they have to have a deeper meaning, and this Mercedes grille is probably the best known around the world, so it has a meaning that many people associate with a lot of things – and no other brand has that,” said Wagener .

A Unified Design for ICE and EV Models

Mercedes has long stated it wants to have a common styling language for electric and combustion models, abandoning the polarizing egg-shaped designs of the EQE and EQS lines. The new strategy has already been showcased by the G-Class and the new CLA, and will be followed by the upcoming GLC as well as the next generation of the E-Class and S-Class sedans.

More: 2027 Mercedes E-Class EV Mule Spied, Final Design Will Ditch Egg Shape

“In the first generation, we did purpose design because it was special and people want to show they are driving electric cars, and to make them a bit different, more aerodynamic and futuristic-looking”, Wagener explained. The differentiation between EV and ICE no longer matters for buyers, so Mercedes will “definitely move away from that”.

Mercedes has pledged to introduce 17 new or refreshed EVs and 19 ICE models by 2027. This means that its designers will have plenty of opportunities to show us what they mean with “respect”. Hopefully, this will help the brand establish a strong identity not just against its homegrown premium rivals, like BMW and Audi, but also new ones coming from China.

New Electric Isuzu Pickup Is Here To Teach Diesels A Lesson

  • The electric version of the Isuzu D-Max delivers 188 hp from dual electric motors.
  • Powered by a 66.9 kWh battery, the electric truck claims 163 miles of WLTP range.
  • Pre-orders for the D-Max EV begin in late 2025, with deliveries starting March 2026.

Isuzu is stepping into the electric pickup game with a familiar face and a new heart. The company has officially unveiled the production version of its fully electric D-Max pickup, which is set to hit European roads in 2026.

While the exterior sticks closely to what buyers already know, underneath it promises a zero-emission alternative without sacrificing the rugged practicality the D-Max is known for. Fleets and private buyers looking to ditch diesel but keep their payloads will likely want to take a closer look.

More: Isuzu D-Max And MU-X Gain New Engine And Gearbox

Described as “the first production electric pickup in Europe to deliver full commercial capabilities,” the Isuzu D-Max EV will face off against rivals like the upcoming electric version of the next-generation Toyota Hilux.

Visually, there is little to separate the EV from its internal combustion siblings. Unlike the concept version shown last year, the production D-Max EV skips the closed-off grille treatment. Instead, exterior changes are subtle, limited mostly to EV-specific badging and the absence of tailpipes. The charging port has been tucked into the same spot where the fuel cap normally lives, maintaining a familiar layout for users.

For its debut, Isuzu dressed the D-Max EV in a one-off Norwegian Blue paint job, paired with black accents and matching 18-inch alloy wheels. The electric pickup will launch in two high-spec trim levels, with buyers able to choose between Extended Cab and Double Cab body styles.

Dual Electric Motors And 4WD

The D-Max EV runs on dual electric motors that generate a combined 188 hp (140 kW / 190 PS) and 325 Nm (240 lb-ft) of torque. That means it offers 27 hp (20 kW) more power than the diesel version, though it gives up 35 Nm (26 lb-ft) of torque in the trade. Power is delivered to all four wheels through a full-time four-wheel-drive system, with the Rough Terrain Mode feature carried over from the diesel model.

Performance figures include a 0 to 62 mph (0 to 100 km/h) sprint in 10.1 seconds and a top speed that nudges just over 80 mph (129 km/h). More importantly for truck buyers, the electric D-Max maintains serious working credentials, boasting a payload capacity of over 1,000 kg (2,205 lbs) and a towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes (7,716 lbs), which are on par with diesel midsize pickups. Off-road figures are equally robust, with a 600 mm (23.6 inch) wading depth and 210 mm (8.3 inch) of ground clearance.

Battery and Charging Details

A 66.9 kWh lithium-ion battery provides a WLTP-rated range of 263 km (163 miles). This figure might seem modest compared to smaller EVs, but it is in line with expectations for a midsize pickup carrying extra weight and size. Fast charging at up to 50 kW DC allows the battery to go from 20 to 80 percent charge in about one hour. Isuzu backs the battery with an 8-year or 100,000-mile (160,900 km) warranty.

The fully electric truck rides on a modified version of the ladder frame chassis found in the regular Isuzu D-Max. However, the rear suspension features a De-Dion setup instead of leaf springs, contributing to a more refined ride.

The Isuzu D-Max EV made its global debut at the 2025 Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham. Pre-sales for the UK market are expected to begin in the second half of the year, with first customer deliveries planned for March 2026. Isuzu has also confirmed that the electric truck will be offered in select mainland European markets, including Norway.

Citroen’s Funky Buggy Is Back With Gold Steelies And Tube Doors

  • The Citroen Ami Buggy is no longer a limited edition and is now widely available.
  • The facelifted version retains the open-air design and gold steelies of its predecessor.
  • The updated Ami lineup also includes LCV (Cargo) and wheelchair-friendly versions.

Citroen has unveiled the facelifted Ami Buggy – a beach-friendly version of the urban EV designed for open-air driving. Unlike its predecessor which was offered as a limited edition, the new Ami Buggy is now part of the refreshed Ami lineup, ensuring greater availability.

The Ami Buggy is inspired by the concept from the 2024 Paris Auto Show, although some features such as the grippy tires and the LED bar didn’t make it to production. Of course, the EV inherits the redesigned front and rear ends of the regular Ami with round lightning units, and the decorative 2CV-style side gills.

The highlight of the Buggy is the absence of conventional doors, which have been replaced by black metal hoops mounted on hinges. The Wrangler-inspired setup comes with optional zipped door covers for rainy weather, and is combined with a retractable sunroof.

Other differences compared to the regular Ami is the sizeable roof spoiler, and the 14-inch steel wheels which are finished in gold. Unfortunately, the Khaki shade of the previous Ami Buggy is not featured in the new version.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Citroen

The EV is also available in a flagship trim called Ami Buggy Palmeira. This one adds black and yellow decals on the wheel arches and the greenhouse, matching the yellow double-chevron emblems. It also gets yellow accents inside the cabin including the three storage boxes, bag hook, floor mats, door nets, and smartphone holder. Finally, buyers of the Palmeira get Andy – a little robot figuring with a bouncing head – mounted on the dashboard.

The Citroen Ami Buggy doesn’t get any performance or chassis upgrades over the standard Ami. The heavy quadricycle has a top speed of 45 km/h (28 mph) thanks to a single 8 hp electric motor. The carry-over 5.5 kWh battery pack offers a range of 75 km (47 miles), and can charge in 4 hours from a standard 220V socket.

A Growing Lineup

The lineup of the facelifted Ami also includes the Ami Cargo LCV and the Ami for All which is designed for wheelchair users. An LCV conversion available as an aftermarket accessory (Cargo Pack), creating up to 340 lt (12 cubic feet) of space inside the vehicle.

As for the regular version, Citroen offers three Color Packs – Spicy, Icy and Minty – for greater personalization. These can be installed by the owner, including colorful wheel covers, decal sets, and interior accents.

Orders for the updated Citroen Ami lineup will open on May 6th across Europe. Pricing starts at €7,990 ($9,100) for the Ami and from €8,390 ($9,500) for the Ami Color Pack. The more adventurous Citroen Ami Buggy is priced from €9,590 ($10,900), while the Palmeira flagship trim starts at €9,990 ($11,400). Since the launch of the original Ami in 2020, Citroen has sold 75,000 units in 18 markets.

Citroen Just Put The Biggest Screen Ever In A Stellantis Model

  • Citroen has shown the production version of the new C5 Aircross SUV.
  • The model is available with fully electric, mild hybrid and PHEV options.
  • The interior gains new technology, alongside extra comfort and practicality.

The wraps are off the next-generation Citroen C5 Aircross, which offers a blend of familiar eccentricity and a fresh batch of tech upgrades that push the quirky SUV further into modern territory. While sticking close to the spirit of the original concept, the new C5 Aircross brings a more polished design, greater comfort, and a lineup of electrified powertrains, including fully electric, mild-hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options.

The revised model adopts the new family face of Citroen, already introduced on the latest C3, C4, C4 X, and Berlingo. The bodywork is more sculpted than before, with a clear focus on aerodynamics to boost efficiency. Wheel sizes climb up to 20 inches, paired with a healthy 200 mm (7.9 inches) of ground clearance for those occasional curb-hopping adventures.

More: 2025 Citroen C4 And C4 X Debut In Paris With A New Face

Interestingly, the production model has retained the protruding LED taillights of the concept, infusing some French quirkiness into the family hauler. In fact, the only notable changes from concept to production are the more conventional door handles, and the thicker pillars.

In terms of size, the new C5 Aircross stretches to 4,652 mm (183.1 inches) in length, riding on a 2,784 mm (109.6 inches) wheelbase. That is an increase of 150 mm (5.9 inches) and 60 mm (2.4 inches) respectively compared to its predecessor, giving the SUV a more substantial footprint without straying too far from its original proportions.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

A Bigger, Smarter Interior

The headline feature inside the “C-Zen Lounge” cabin is a floating 13-inch portrait-style infotainment screen, joined by a neat row of physical buttons underneath. Citroen proudly claims this is the largest central high-definition screen ever offered by a Stellantis brand, an impressive but curious boast considering Citroen’s usual spot as the group’s more budget-friendly option in Europe.

Other tech highlights include a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, wireless charging, ambient lighting, and a panoramic sunroof. Storage solutions are smartly arranged, with two cupholders hidden behind the touchscreen and extra compartments in the central armrest and door bins. The overall layout feels clean, user-friendly, and much more inviting for daily use.

Review: Here’s Why I Bought A Citroen C5 Aircross As A Family Hauler

Citroen ‘s designers leaned heavily into their comfort-first philosophy. Foam fabric covers the dashboard, door cards, and seats, creating a soft, cocoon-like feel inside. The latest version of Citroen’s Advance Comfort seats promises better cushioning and improved body support. Front seats are available with electric adjustments, heating, ventilation, and even massaging functions. Rear passengers get reclining backrests and optional seat heating, although the previous model’s trick three-separate-seat layout and sliding bench have been abandoned.

The larger size pays dividends in passenger space, with more generous legroom and headroom for those riding in the back. Cargo capacity is also up, offering 651 liters (23 cubic feet) regardless of which powertrain is fitted. Extra hidden spaces include a 75-liter (2.6 cubic feet) compartment under the boot floor and another 40 liters (1.4 cubic feet) scattered around the cabin for smaller items.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Platform and Powertrain Details

The new C5 Aircross rides on Stellantis’ STLA Medium architecture, the same platform underpinning the Peugeot 3008/5008, Opel Grandland, and DS No8. It will likely support the upcoming DS No7 too. These shared bones open the door for fully electric powertrains – a first for the nameplate – joining the mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid options. All versions of the new C5 Aircross are automatic and drive the front wheels.

The e-C5 Aircross is available in two different versions with a single electric motor, missing out on the dual-motor powertrains of the Peugeot siblings. The Standard Range produces 207 hp (154 kW / 210 PS) and offers 323 miles (520 km) of range from a 73 kWh battery pack. The Extended Range produces 227 hp (169 kW / 230 PS) and can cover up to 422 miles (679 km) between charges thanks to a larger 97 kWh battery. In both cases, the maximum charging rate is 160 kW DC.

The entry-level C5 Aircross Hybrid 145 is probably the most interesting option for buyers. The carry-over turbo 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine is good for 134 hp (100 kW / 136 PS), with a 12 hp (9 kW) electric motor integrated in the six-speed dual-clutch automatic, sourcing energy from a 0.9 kWh battery.

Finally, there is the C5 Aircross Plug-in Hybrid 195 version. It pairs a 1.6-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine to a single electric motor, producing a combined 193 hp (143 kW / 195 PS). Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. More importantly, the 21 kW battery pack provides an extended EV-only range of 53 miles (85 km).

More: This Mid-Engine Beast Is No Regular Citroen Hatch

As with its predecessor, the C5 Aircross has a Citroen-specific suspension with Progressive Hydraulic Cushions, promising a “magic carpet ride”. Finally, the available Drive Assist 2.0 pack enables Level 2 autonomous driving.

With the C5X fastback crossover on the way out once the current generation wraps up, the C5 Aircross is set to take over as Citroen’s flagship model. It is a logical, if not thrilling, evolution for the brand as it doubles down on practicality, comfort, and now, electrification.

The new Citroën C5 Aircross is set to launch in Europe in the second half of 2025. It will be produced at the Rennes plant in France, with pricing to be announced closer to the release date.

New Alfa Romeo Stelvio Unmasked From Official Patents

  • Alfa Romeo’s next-gen Stelvio will debut later this year with electric and hybrid options.
  • The premium SUV will be a clean-sheet design, with fresh styling and more technology.
  • Quadrifoglio might keep the outgoing model’s twin-turbo V6 for a performance edge.

The clock is ticking for the debut of the second-generation Alfa Romeo Stelvio, expected later this year, and not a moment too soon. The current model has been showing its age for a while now, and a fresh update in design, technology, and an EV powertrain option is exactly what it needs.

More: New Alfa Romeo Stelvio Leaks Out Giving Off Strong Mandalorian Vibes

Although Alfa Romeo has yet to release official images, we have already gotten a glimpse of the new SUV through patent filings. Now, independent renderings are giving us an even better idea of what to expect from the next-generation Stelvio’s exterior.

The illustrations come courtesy of digital artists Theophilus Chin and Nikita Chuyko for Kolesa, both well-known for producing impressively accurate previews of upcoming production models. Their latest work is based on earlier spy shots and recent patent drawings, with a few creative touches of color added in.

A Familiar Face with Sharper Features

The new Italian SUV represents a noticeable evolution from its predecessor, but the scudetto grille and updated graphics ensure it is still unmistakably an Alfa Romeo. Up front, split lighting units feature slim daytime running lights and main headlights tucked neatly within triangular bumper intakes. The revised grille also clears enough space for a centered license plate, borrowing a trick from the smaller Alfa Romeo Junior.

Along the sides, the Stelvio looks more refined. A sleeker roofline, bi-tone paint treatment, large alloy wheels, and flush door handles pull the design closer to the coupe-SUV territory without going full fastback. Around the back, the standout feature is the full-width LED taillights that form a triangular shape and stretch partially into the tailgate, echoing the look of the front grille.

\\\\\\\

Illustrations: Kelsonik and Theottle

Different Takes on the Same Blueprint

The two artists approached the task slightly differently. Kelsonik updated his earlier renderings for Kolesa, refining the design with more accurate details sourced from the leaked patent filings. Theottle, meanwhile, kept a few differences but nailed the proportions, basing his interpretation on the mechanically related Jeep Wagoneer S platform.

The next generation Alfa Romeo Stelvio will share the STLA Large underpinnings with the Jeep Wagoneer S, Recon, and Dodge Charger, allowing it to be compatible with fully electric and hybrid powertrains. This change means that Maserati will be the final brand clinging to the Giorgio platform that originally debuted with the outgoing Giulia and Stelvio models.

\\\\\\

What About Performance?

Initial reports suggested that the high-performance Stelvio Quadrifoglio would go fully electric, but more recent information points to the twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6 sticking around. That is probably a good thing for Alfa Romeo loyalists who appreciate a bit of mechanical drama under the hood. With any luck, the new Stelvio will also inherit some of the outgoing model’s excellent chassis tuning, which helped make it one of the most engaging SUVs to drive.

The official reveal of the new Stelvio is expected within the next few months. It will sit above the Junior and Tonale in Alfa Romeo’s growing SUV lineup. As for the next Giulia, it is reportedly scheduled to arrive in 2026, possibly trading its traditional sedan shape for a more crossover-style, fastback design.

Seres 5 Crushes Tesla Model Y In Comfort But Loses The Battle Where It Counts

If you have been paying even half-attention to the electric vehicle scene lately, you know that competition is heating up fast, with new challengers trying to swipe the crown from established players. We recently spent time behind the wheel of the Seres 5, a fully electric SUV from China with premium aspirations. However, besides the main review, we wanted to see how well it stacks up against its biggest competitor, the Tesla Model Y, so we organized a quick head-to-head comparison between the two.

The Seres 5 may have launched in Europe in 2024, but the Chinese version has been around since 2019. Unfortunately, at the time we had the Seres in our hands, Tesla was not offering test drives of the new Juniper in Greece, only the pre-facelift Model Y. Still, it makes for an interesting comparison, even if we have to keep in mind the changes introduced with the updated Tesla.

Design: The Seres 5 Looks More Intriguing

Looks are subjective, sure, but a comparison would be incomplete without a design face-off. Beyond the exterior styling, we also factored in the cabin, where the Seres quietly pulls ahead.

Both models merge crossover and coupe cues, aiming for a sweet spot between aerodynamics and practicality. Parked side by side, the Tesla Model Y simply looks less interesting. Blame it partly on the fact that it resembles a bloated Model 3, although Tesla did address that with the recent mid-lifecycle update. It also does not help that Model Ys have become about as common as pigeons in a park.

That said, the rear end of the Model Y still looks cleaner and more cohesive than the Seres 5’s. While the Seres will not win any beauty pageants, it turns more heads and looks a bit more premium. It could definitely borrow a few styling updates from the related Aito M5, but even without them, it feels fresher than Tesla’s overfamiliar form.

\\\\\\\\

Inside, most new EVs have taken a page from Tesla’s playbook: a big touchscreen, minimal physical controls, and a focus on being “modern” by removing everything people actually liked about buttons. The Seres 5 sticks to that formula but executes it better, with nicer materials, thoughtful color combinations, and a stylish center console. Plus, it offers a digital instrument cluster and a heads-up display, which make it easier for drivers migrating from more traditional cars.

However, while standard equipment of the Seres is pretty generous, Tesla’s tech and interface feel more modern, thanks to the continuous over-the-air software updates.

Practicality: The Tesla Model Y Prevails

While the Seres 5 offers a fancier interior, the Tesla wins when it comes to space for both people and cargo. Despite its sloping roofline, the Model Y offers more rear headroom and legroom, making it easier to climb in and out.

Cargo space is also firmly in Tesla’s favor. Officially, the Model Y can swallow 29 cubic feet (822 liters) in the rear boot and another 4.1 cubic feet (114 liters) in the frunk. Tesla’s habit of measuring up to the roof inflates those numbers a bit, but the advantage remains clear.

The Seres 5 has a boot capacity rating of 13 cubic feet (367 lt), with the frunk contributing another 2.4 cubic feet (67 lt). In reality, the difference with the Tesla is not that huge, but it is noticeable. Overall, I found the Model Y to be more suitable for family use, especially if you add the convenience of the longer driving range and the faster DC charging capabilities (250 kW compared to 100 kW).

Ride Comfort: The Seres 5 Feels Like An Electric Grand Tourer

Driving the two EVs back to back made it clear that the Seres 5 has the most comfortable and refined ride. The plush suspension absorbs road imperfections in a nicer way than the Tesla which can feel harsh in comparison.

The Seres also has a smoother power delivery – especially in the EV and Comfort modes – rounding up it’s friendly road manners. Furthermore, the cabin of the Seres is a bit more quiet, although we didn’t get the chance to test both vehicles on longer journeys on the highway.

\\\\\\\
Driving Dynamics: The Tesla Is Sportier And Feels Faster (But Isn’t)

While the majority of EV buyers are not interested in sporty driving manners, we had to include this segment allowing the differences in the character of the two models to shine.

On twisty roads, you’ll have more fun in the Tesla than in the Seres. It’s steering is a more direct, and the chassis setup feels sharper than your average family-oriented SUV or crossover. The softer and comfort-focused suspension of the Chinese EV results in more body roll compared to the more balanced setup of its well-established rival.

Another thing I noticed, is that despite being less powerful and slightly slower on paper (0-62 mph in 5.o seconds compared to 4.2 seconds), the Tesla feels quicker than the Seres, providing snappier acceleration from standstill. Thanks to all these and a more rear-biased AWD setup, the Model Y is more eager to be pushed, thus being the better option for spirited driving.

Pricing: It’s Hard To Beat The Tesla

In Greece, where we tested these cars, the facelifted Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD starts at €52,990 ($58,100), or €43,990 ($48,200) with incentives. Inventory models of the outgoing version can be had for even less, starting at €48,940 ($53,600).

Meanwhile, the Seres 5 costs €57,500 ($63,000) including incentives. This means the Seres commands a €13,510 ($14,800) premium over a new Model Y Juniper, with similar specs. The gap widens further if you consider the older inventory units.

Verdict: Tesla Keeps Its Crown… For Now

The Seres 5 is an impressive EV, especially when you consider that it is the brand’s first production model, but Tesla’s best-seller is really hard to beat in its own game. Our comparison showed that the Seres has a more comfortable ride and a nicer interior, but the Tesla is more practical, has sharper driving dynamics, and is significantly more affordable.

Overall, the outgoing Tesla Model Y still feels like a well-rounded option for prospective EV buyers. However, the competitive pricing of the updated Model Y Juniper makes it a no-brained, having corrected many of it’s predecessor’s flaws.

We’ll be eager to test more Tesla Model Y rivals from China in the future, although the biggest threat to the EV’s success appears to the global backslash against the company’s CEO, Elon Musk. This appears to be the main reason behind a significant decline in Tesla sales in Europe, with EV buyers turning their backs to the once-dominant brand.

BMW M Confirms A New Halo Supercar

  • The BMW Skytop will be followed by more limited-production models from the brand.
  • One of them will be a bespoke BMW M, designed as a halo model for enthusiasts.
  • This news follows reports about scrapped sports car and supercar development projects.

BMW seems to be on a mission to cash in on the growing appetite for ridiculously expensive, limited-edition cars with a new halo model aimed at its performance division. And, it seems BMW M is finally tuning in to the demands of fans, who have long been begging for a modern version of the M1, blending the exotic appeal of the past with a contemporary twist.

The news follows the announcement that the BMW Skytop concept from last year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este will soon enter production, with only 50 units expected and a rumored price tag of $500k. The success of this project has inspired BMW to roll out more similarly bespoke models, though this time, they’ll carry the M emblem.

A Future of Ultra-Limited Editions

Sylvia Neubauer, BMW M’s Vice President of customers, brand, and sales, shared some insight into the company’s future direction with AutoExpress: “BMW’s strategy is to have a series of small-series additions that we offer to the markets. There will be something coming at Villa d’Este this year, and probably some future small-series editions with the ‘M’ designation.”

When asked if this could include a bespoke BMW M model inspired by the original M1, Neubauer stated:

“Definitely, such halo cars clearly position the brand. They make it very, very desirable. They have that positive spillover effect on the brand and on the product portfolio. You’re making a certain customer group very, very happy with these dream cars. Even those that cannot afford the car admire the brand. This will be part of our future road map as well.”

A New M1, Sort of?

Several months ago, reports surfaced about BMW having worked on a spiritual successor to the M1, possibly with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The I16 project was allegedly 95% ready when it was scrapped in favor of the controversial XM SUV. Other reports suggest that plans for a fully electric supercar were also cancelled after it reached the clay model stage.

While we still don’t know if the upcoming bespoke BMW M car will have any ties to these canceled projects, the sighting of the Neue Klasse EV Coupe in testing suggests something special could be on the horizon. If the camouflaged prototype’s dramatic design is paired with the performance capabilities of BMW’s next-gen electric powertrain, we might just be looking at a true M1 successor, albeit one with a very different powertrain under the hood.

Competing with Porsche?

Neubauer was also asked whether the new model could compete with the Porsche 911, to which she replied: “That market obviously is an interesting market. But we also know that Porsche customers are very, very loyal to their brand. So if we do it, we definitely need to do it spot on—100 percent.”

This doesn’t exactly provide a definitive answer about the car’s design or character, but Neubauer did confirm that BMW M is “internally” working on a “dream car.” When asked about its launch timing, Neubauer added, “Let’s wait for the right time.”

With all these pieces falling into place, it’s clear that BMW M has something big on the way. Whether it’s an M1 revival, a fully electric supercar, or something else entirely, one thing is for sure: The wait will likely be worth it.

This Chinese Sedan Looks Like Jaguar’s Type 00, But You Didn’t Hear It from Us

  • SAIC-owned Roewe has introduced the “Pearl of China” concept in Shanghai.
  • The luxurious electric sedan blends styling cues from Jaguar and Rolls-Royce.
  • It was designed by Josef Kaban, who has worked for Rolls-Royce and Bugatti.

The Shanghai Auto Show is always a spectacle, but this year, Chinese automakers have outdone themselves with a slew of debuts. Among the various concepts and production vehicles, SAIC stole the spotlight with some impressive models from AUDI by Audi and MG. But it was the Roewe brand’s latest concept called the “Pearl of China”, that really caught our attention, and for good reason.

This new vehicle doesn’t just stand out for its name. It looks strikingly similar to an upcoming European luxury model, and we can’t help but notice.

A Familiar Touch from a Familiar Designer

The Roewe Pearl was designed by Josef Kaban, the same Slovak designer who briefly served as the head of design at Rolls-Royce in 2019, though his stint there lasted all of six months. Before being recruited by SAIC in 2024, Kaban’s resume included stints at Audi, Skoda, Bugatti, BMW, and Volkswagen. And yes, he was behind the Bugatti Veyron, which is still regarded as one of his greatest achievements.

Arguably, the Roewe Pearl could easily be mistaken for Jaguar’s upcoming flagship electric sedan. Its upright nose, slim LED lights, and fully illuminated grille all feel strikingly familiar. Sure, the proportions differ from Jaguar’s Type 00 coupe concept, but they’re much closer to the production sedan variant, which has been spotted on several occasions.

We can also spot other European design inspirations. For example, the surfacing on the profile and the suicide doors are reminiscent of Rolls-Royce, while the gold accents on the wraparound greenhouse evoke Maybach vibes. Inside, the four-seat layout features ambient lighting, a floating center console, a large infotainment display, and a flower vase between the rear seats.

Is It Electric? Probably

We don’t have any hard details on the technical specs just yet, but the absence of air cooling intakes suggests that the Pearl could be powered by a fully electric powertrain. Given the current trends, this wouldn’t be surprising, but until we hear more, we can only speculate.

Along with the Pearl, SAIC’s Roewe has also teased a shadowy SUV that shares a similar design language. While the company hasn’t confirmed whether either concept will actually make it to production, they have hinted that these designs could foreshadow the direction Roewe intends to take in the future. Expect more of this design language in the years to come, whether in sedans, SUVs, or something else entirely.

\\\\\\\\

Despite luxury sedans and SUVs from Chinese brands becoming more common, Roewe is typically positioned as an entry-level brand within SAIC’s broader portfolio. That said, the “Pearl of China” concept suggests that the company might be eyeing a move upmarket. After all, if you’ve got a designer behind the Bugatti Veyron and a concept this striking, why not aim higher? Other SAIC-owned brands include Wuling, Baojun, Maxus, IM Motors, Rising Auto, and MG, each covering a different segment of the vast Chinese market.

Genesis Sees Room For A G-Class Rival In Its SUV Lineup

  • Genesis hints at a rugged, high-end SUV inspired by the X Gran Equator concept.
  • The model could be sold alongside the upcoming Genesis GV90 flagship SUV.
  • Specifications remain a mystery, but production feasibility has been confirmed.

The Genesis X Gran Equator concept was one of the most buzzed-about reveals at the New York Auto Show. And it looks like it’s more than just a flashy design study. Luc Donckerwolke, Genesis’ Chief Creative Officer and Chief Brand Officer, teased that a production version of this luxury off-roader could soon challenge some of the big names in the game, think Land Rover Defender, Lexus GX, and the Mercedes G-Class.

Is Genesis Going Overboard with SUVs?

Genesis already offers a diverse range of crossovers and SUVs, including the GV60, GV70, GV80, and the GV80 Coupe. Add to that the forthcoming production version of the 2024 Neolun concept – soon to be known as the GV90 – and it might start to feel like they’re churning out more SUVs than we really need. But according to the brand, there’s still room for more.

Speaking to Australian media at the New York Auto Show, Donckerwolke hinted at the potential future of Genesis’ growing SUV lineup. As reported by CarExpert, he said:

“The X Gran Equator is a new potential addition to a lineup which is already quite big. In a couple of years we have reached a family of SUVs. We have shown last year there’s another one coming, a flagship SUV, very soon [GV90]. Now the question is: how do we position the Gran Equator within this lineup? How do we ensure there’s not going to be an overlap or cannibalization between those vehicles? I do believe there’s room for that.”

Genesis Sees Room For A G-Class Rival In Its SUV Lineup

While we don’t yet have details on the X Gran Equator’s platform or powertrain, its rugged features and unique proportions suggest it could offer serious off-road capability, setting it apart from the rest of the Genesis lineup.

Of course, some of the more extreme elements, like the gigantic 24-inch wheels, might be toned down for production, but the concept provides a clear preview of what’s to come. Depending on whether the powertrain is electric, hybrid, or internal combustion, we might see some beefier cooling intakes up front. Features like the four sunroofs, swiveling seats, and split tailgate could also make it into the production version, making for a stylish and practical package.

Hopefully, Genesis designers will retain the analogue-style dials and physical controls inside the luxurious cabin, as these details are a refreshing change in a world full of touchscreens.

Is It Actually Going to Happen?

Donckerwolke has confirmed that the concept is technically feasible: “Basically, the Gran Equator was designed by my team in a very short time. Like all the other projects, I make sure that because of my engineering team being involved in the project that all those projects are feasible, that we don’t have to face any big hurdles if we have to realize that would basically make the project unsuitable. From the technical point of view, the platform works, the technical side works, now it’s obviously the demand.”

Genesis Sees Room For A G-Class Rival In Its SUV Lineup

Judging by the buzz following the concept’s debut, it seems there’s demand aplenty. “Everybody has called and asked, ‘When can I have it?’” Donckerwolke shared. “The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, and we think this is a big step forward. It taps into that SUV emotion and goes back to the off-road capabilities that make these vehicles authentic.”

While Genesis hasn’t set a specific timeline for the Gran Equator’s market launch, we’re guessing it’s still a few years out. Given how long it typically takes to transition a concept into production, don’t hold your breath for anything before 2027. Fingers crossed, the gorgeous X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible concepts will also follow the example of the Neolun and the X Gran Equator in the future.
