Mazda’s First Dedicated EV Will Be Built In Japan With Panasonic Batteries

  • Mazda is building a new plant in Japan, where it will produce Panasonic batteries.
  • Its first EV-dedicated platform is being developed in-house and will be ready by 2027.
  • Mazda is also working on next-gen lithium-ion and solid-state battery technology

Mazda might be doing just fine without a dedicated EV, but the Japanese automaker is now stepping up its electrification efforts in a big way. It has announced plans to build a new manufacturing facility in Japan focused exclusively on producing EV batteries that will power its first model on a . This move represents a major step forward in its electrification strategy, with the factory set to supply battery modules for the company’s first-ever EV designed on a dedicated electric vehicle platform.

The facility will be located in Iwakuni City, within Japan’s Yamaguchi Prefecture, and will feature Panasonic Energy as the primary supplier for its cylindrical battery modules. Once operational, the factory is expected to crank out enough battery packs to achieve an annual production capacity of 10 GWh

The cylindrical batteries will be used in a new model riding on Mazda’s first EV-dedicated architecture. The company didn’t set a date for the debut of the EV and hasn’t revealed any technical details. Earlier comments by the CEO, Masahiro Moro, suggest that the in-house development of the EV architecture will be completed by 2027.

Mazda promises this new foundation will deliver EVs with “advanced design, superior convenience, and extended driving ranges.”

In the meantime, Mazda isn’t sitting completely idle in the EV space. The automaker already offers fully electric models, including the Mazda MX-30 crossover, which first launched in 2019 (though it’s since been discontinued in North America). Built on a modified version of the SkyActiv platform—originally designed for combustion-powered models—the MX-30 represents Mazda’s initial steps into electrification.

More recently, Mazda launched the EZ-6 in China, available in both fully electric and range-extender variants. The midsize sedan is built on Changan-sourced underpinnings, which it shares with the Deepal/Shenlan SL03. The same platform-sharing approach is expected for the production version of the Mazda Arata EV Concept, anticipated in 2025 as a sibling to the Deepal SL07 SUV.

Looking ahead, Mazda is diving into a range of battery technologies beyond the Panasonic-sourced modules for its EVs. The automaker is developing high-density lithium-ion batteries in-house, to put them on PHEVs and EVs by 2030. Last but not least, the Mazda CEO has revealed they are also building a “very advanced research base” for solid-state battery technology.

Audi A6L E-tron Caught Stretching, Looks More Like A Proper Executive Sedan

  • Audi is ready to unveil a long-wheelbase version of the A6 E-Tron sedan.
  • The EV will be exclusively offered in China, where it will also be produced.
  • The A6L E-Tron sedan shares its PPE underpinnings with the Q6L E-Tron SUV.

If you are not a fan of the aerodynamic silhouette of the Audi A6 E-Tron, you might prefer the upcoming variant with a longer wheelbase and a stretched tail. We’re talking about the Audi A6L E-tron that made its first appearance in front of our spy photographers, ahead of its debut in China.

The fully electric sedan was photographed during winter testing in Northern Sweden. Just like the other long-wheelbase versions of Audi models, the A6L E-tron will be exclusively offered in the Chinese market.

Visually, the highlight is the redesigned front end, with a much slimmer illuminated grille and a new pair of split headlights featuring LED Matrix technology. The”Tech-Deck Face” and the cleaner design for the bumper intakes make the facelifted Enyaq look very similar to the smaller Elroq. On the other hand, the profile and the rear end appear to be largely unchanged.

As for the interior, Skoda has confirmed a few enhancements including “more sustainable materials and extensive standard equipment”. The teaser video shows the Sportline versions that will be unveiled together with the standard EVs. It is safe to assume that the Enyaq vRS performance flagship will also be part of the facelifted lineup.

The company didn’t go into specifics about the technical specifications, but mentioned that the EV will be offered with “diverse powertrain options”. The Enyaq received range and performance upgrades for 2024, and is currently available in RWD and AWD guises, producing from 177 hp (132 kW / 179 PS) to 335 hp (250 kW / 340 PS).

According to Skoda, the facelifted Enyaq will offer a longer range compared to its predecessor, partly thanks to “optimized aerodynamics”. The outgoing model can travel between 340-565 km (210-351 miles) between charges depending on the version.

We will learn everything about the 2025 Enyaq and Enyaq Coupe on January 8. Skoda is celebrating its 130th anniversary this year, so we wouldn’t be surprised if the company had more surprises for us in the coming months.

Which EVs Qualify For Tax Credits In 2025? Here’s The Complete List

  • The new list of PHEVs and EVs that qualify for the federal tax credit includes 18 vehicles.
  • Among the new entries for 2025 are the Tesla Cybertruck, and the Hyundai Ioniq 9.
  • Models like the VW ID.4, the Nissan Leaf, and the Rivian R1T/R1S are no longer eligible.

It’s a new year, and with it comes a fresh round of updates to the federal EV tax credit program, courtesy of the U.S. Department of Energy and the EPA. This year’s headline? The Tesla Cybertruck has finally made the list of eligible vehicles. But don’t start celebrating just yet. The incoming Trump Administration has signaled it might pull the plug on these incentives altogether. Unsurprisingly, this looming uncertainty has sparked a mad dash among buyers eager to lock in their $7,500 credits before the opportunity slips away.

More: Tesla’s Global Sales Fall For The First Time In Over A Decade

The updated list for 2025 includes 18 eligible EV and PHEV models, a drop from last year’s 22. To qualify for the federal tax credit, vehicles must be manufactured in North America, have a battery capacity of at least 7 kWh, and meet specific price caps: $55,000 for cars and $80,000 for trucks and SUVs. These criteria mean that not every shiny new EV on the block gets a ticket to the tax credit party.

Tesla Leads the Pack (Mostly)

Among Tesla’s lineup, the Cybertruck’s dual-motor variant squeaks under the $80,000 limit with a starting price of $79,990, alongside a more affordable single-motor version arriving later this year. However, the top-tier Cyberbeast isn’t invited to the tax-credit club due to its MSRP of $99,990. Other eligible Teslas include the Long Range and Performance trims of the Model 3 and Model Y, as well as the Model X AWD.

Which EVs Qualify For Tax Credits In 2025? Here’s The Complete List
Hyundai Ioniq 9

Who Else Made the Cut?

Beyond Tesla, a few other notable entries have joined the roster. New to the list are the 2025 Genesis Electrified GV70, US-built 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 9, and the facelifted 2026 Kia EV6 and EV9. Cybertruck competitors like the Ford F-150 Lightning (Flash, Lariat, and XLT trims) and Chevrolet Silverado EV (LT trim) are also included.

GM’s presence is strong, with offerings like the Cadillac Lyriq, Chevrolet Blazer EV, and Equinox EV making the list, along with the Acura ZDX and Honda Prologue, both built on GM platforms.

For plug-in hybrids, the list is short as just one model made the cut: the aging Chrysler Pacifica PHEV. It’s a far cry from the EV-heavy lineup that dominates the program today.

Who Missed Out?

Several previously eligible models have fallen off this year’s list, including the Volkswagen ID.4, Nissan Leaf, and Rivian’s R1T and R1S. Buyers eyeing these vehicles will need to dig a little deeper into their wallets, as the $7,500 incentive is no longer on the table for them.

Looking ahead, the federal EV tax credit program that was introduced in 2022 as part of Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, faces an uncertain future. With Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration set for January 20, 2025, it’s unclear whether the program will survive or be significantly scaled back under the new administration.

FAQ: What You Need to Know About the EV Tax Credit

Who Can Qualify for the Credit?

The credit is available to individuals and businesses. To qualify:

  • You must buy the vehicle for personal or business use, not for resale.
  • The vehicle must primarily be used in the U.S.

Are There Income Limits?

Yes, your modified adjusted gross income (AGI) must be below these thresholds:

  • $300,000 for married couples filing jointly.
  • $225,000 for heads of households.
  • $150,000 for single filers or others.

You can use your AGI from either the year you take delivery of the vehicle or the previous year, whichever is lower. Your modified AGI is calculated by taking the amount from line 11 of your Form 1040 and adding any foreign earned income (line 45 or 50 of Form 2555) or income excluded from gross income due to sources in Puerto Rico or American Samoa.

What Vehicles Qualify?

To qualify for the credit, vehicles must:

  • Have a battery capacity of at least 7 kWh.
  • Weigh under 14,000 pounds (gross vehicle weight rating).
  • Be made by a qualified manufacturer (except fuel cell vehicles, which don’t require this).
  • Be new, meaning it hasn’t been registered, titled, or previously used.
  • Meet final assembly requirements in North America (use the VIN Decoder tool on the Department of Energy’s website to verify).

For vehicles bought after January 1, 2024, the dealer must be registered with the IRS Energy Credits Online system.

How Much is the Credit Worth?

  • Up to $7,500 for vehicles meeting both the critical minerals and battery component sourcing requirements.
  • Up to $3,750 for vehicles meeting only one of these requirements.
  • Vehicles meeting neither requirement won’t qualify for any credit.

What About Price Limits?

The vehicle’s manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) must not exceed:

  • $80,000 for vans, SUVs, and pickup trucks.
  • $55,000 for all other vehicles.

MSRP includes the base price and manufacturer-installed options but excludes destination charges, dealer add-ons, taxes, and fees.

How Do I Claim the Credit?

The credit is nonrefundable, meaning it only reduces the taxes you owe, and you won’t get a refund if the credit exceeds your tax liability. Starting in 2024, you can transfer the credit to the dealer at purchase time to reduce the vehicle’s upfront cost.

How Can I Check If a Vehicle Qualifies?

Check the vehicle window sticker for details like battery capacity, weight, and final assembly location. You can also use the VIN Decoder tool on the Department of Energy’s website or ask your dealer for verification of the vehicle’s eligibility and credit amount.

Hyundai Creta Electric Debuts With 294-Mile Range

  • The Hyundai Creta has just received a fully electric version for the Indian market.
  • The electric SUV will be offered with two battery options – 42 kWh or 51.4 kWh.
  • Rivals include EV-dedicated offerings like the Suzuki eVitara and the Mahindra Be 6.

Hyundai has unveiled a new EV in India, based on one of its most popular SUVs in the region. The Creta Electric adds a zero-emission powertrain option to the SUV’s lineup, with mild visual tweaks distinguishing it from the ICE-powered versions.

The Hyundai Creta Electric features a redesigned nose with a split-grille design. The grille is fully blocked with a pixelated pattern, while the lower bumper intake has active aero flaps. The rear bumper also features a pixelated pattern above the aluminum-style skid plate, alongside more discreet plastic cladding.

The profile is carried over from the ICE-powered Creta, although the EV rides on a new set of 17-inch wheels with an aero-optimized design. It is also available in the pictured Ocean Blue metallic shade.

Hyundai didn’t reveal the specifications of the fully electric powertrain, which is most likely a single electric motor powering the front axle. It does say though that the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint is completed in 7.9 seconds, making the EV faster than the ICE-powered Creta N Line.

\\\\\\\\\\\\

The Creta Electric will be offered with two battery options, with a capacity of 42 kWh or 51.4 kWh. The range figures are 390 km (242 miles) and 473 km (294 miles) respectively, measured under to the local ARAI protocols.

As reported by Autocar India, the battery can charge from 10-80 percent in 58 minutes using a DC charger, while a 10-100 percent charge takes 4 hours in a standard 11 kW AC wallbox. The SUV has a small frunk where owners can store the charging cables and other small items. As for the charging port, it is located behind the Hyundai emblem on the front bumper.

Inside, the Creta Electric gains a new steering wheel with a gear selector that appears to be sourced from the Ioniq 5. A knob on the center tunnel gives access to three driving modes – Eco, Normal, and Sport. The EV also benefits from new graphics for the digital cockpit that comprises dual 10.25-inch displays. Furthermore, there is a plug under the rear bench that can power any kind of electronic devices through the V2L function.

The Hyundai Creta Electric will compete with EV-dedicated rivals including the Suzuki eVitara, Mahindra BE 6, and Tata Curvv EV.

The electric SUV will be formally unveiled at the Bharat Mobility Show in India on January 17. At the moment it is not clear if Hyundai plans on offering it to other markets as well. The current second-generation Hyundai Creta was introduced in 2019, and received a mid-lifecycle update in India in 2024.

Tesla Made A Levitating Cybertruck For Your Desk—And The Scalpers

  • Tesla has expanded the lineup of Cybertruck-themed lifestyle products with a new sold-out item.
  • The Levitating Cybertruck is a 1/24 scale model of the EV that hovers above a magnetic base.
  • The item was priced at $250, but scalpers already sell it for over double the price on eBay.

It looks like Tesla fans have a new object of obsession this holiday season What’s better than owning a Cybertruck? Owning a mini one that floats, of course. Enter the “Levitating Cybertruck,” a desk-sized scale model of the electric truck that hovers mid-air like it’s auditioning for the next sci-fi blockbuster. Yes, it uses magnets. Yes, it’s as absurdly extra as it sounds. And yes, of course, it sold out almost immediately.

This 1:24 scale model measures 8.98 inches (228 mm) long and levitates above a 6.14-inch (156 mm) circular magnetic base. Actually, it might look better than the real thing, as there are no wheels, no doors, no awkward panel gaps. Just a sharp, triangular silhouette that screams, “Look at me, I’m futuristic,” without all that pesky functionality getting in the way.

More: Is This The Most Cybertrucked Tesla Accessory Ever?

The mini Cybertruck features working LED bars on both ends, which you can toggle on or off with a tap of the button on its magnetic base. It’s powered by a Type-C charging cable and AC adapter, but there’s a catch: you’ll need to keep it on a flat, non-metallic surface. Once you’ve mastered the fine art of levitation, the Cybertruck can either hover serenely or rotate—depending on how carefully you place it on the magnet. (Pro tip: don’t sneeze during setup.)

\\\\

Unsurprisingly, this clever little gift idea is already sold out on Tesla’s online shop, though you might want to keep an eye on the official page in case they restock if you’re still interested. But for now, your only option is braving the wilds of eBay, where opportunistic resellers are already cashing in, listing these mini Cybertrucks for anywhere between $449 and a ridiculous $980.

For context, Tesla originally sold it for $250. So if you go the resale route, you’ll be paying nearly double (or more) for what is, at the end of the day, just a really fancy desk toy. This kind of resale frenzy is nothing new for Tesla products, which often attract both die-hard fans and scalpers alike. The latter, of course, bank on desirability, and more importantly, scarcity to drive up prices and turn a quick profit.

Tesla Made A Levitating Cybertruck For Your Desk—And The Scalpers

The “Levitating Cybertruck” joins an ever-growing lineup of lifestyle products inspired by Tesla’s electric truck. These include a wind-up racer, an electric ride-on toy for kids (the Cyberquad), the CyberMug, the CyberVessel, the CyberStein, a stealth whistle, and even a Cybertruck-shaped bottle opener. Oh, and let’s not forget the infamous CyberBeer, which judging by the scathing reviews, is better left unopened unless you’re just in it for the novelty.

GM’s New Wuling Sunshine Is The Swiss Army Knife Of Chinese EVs

  • The SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture has launched a new electric minivan in China.
  • The Wuling Sunshine EV looks like a Japanese kei van but it is slightly larger.
  • The small LCV is powered by a 40-hp electric motor and a 17.6 kWh battery pack.

China is well ahead in the EV game, and commercial vehicles are also part of the mix. SAIC-GM-Wuling has just launched the Sunshine EV, a small minivan focused on practicality and affordability.

The new model is the latest addition to Wuling’s Sunshine family of LCVs which has sold over 5.3 million units since 2002. The design of the Sunshine EV is inspired by Japanese vans, featuring a short nose, small wheels, and a tall square body with double rear sliding doors and a large tailgate.

More: GM’s Wuling Hong Guang EV Is A $10k Minivan With A Tesla Face

Designed for urban use, the new model has a very small footprint but it is still bigger than Japanese kei vans, measuring 3,685 mm (145.1 inches) long, 1,530 mm (60.2 inches) wide, and 1,750 mm (68.9 inches) tall, with a wheelbase of 2,600 mm (102.4 inches).

Inside, the cargo capacity is 527 lt (18.6 cubic feet) in its regular five-seater configuration, and can expand up to 1,117 lt (39.4 cubic feet) thanks to the flat-folding second-row seats.

\\\\\\\\

The quite basic dashboard looks quite basic, betraying the budget nature of this LCV, but that doesn’t mean it skips on clever practical solutions. Wuling has added 20 expandable areas and multiple mounting holes inside the cabin, allowing it to transform according to the owner’s needs.

Compatible accessories include folding tables, cup holders, mobile phone holders, storage compartments, placement racks, and more. Earlier renderings shared by Wuling suggest that the Sunshine EV can turn into different kinds of mobile shops, a tiny camper, or a mobile toolkit for professional buyers.

The EV is powered by a single electric motor producing 40 hp (30 kW / 41 PS), which is enough for a 100 km/h (62 mph) top speed. The battery pack has a capacity of 17.6 kWh and can power external devices through front and rear plugs. It has also been reported that the EV could also become available with a larger 26.5 kWh battery, compatible with CATL’s battery swapping network.

The Wuling Sunshine EV will launch in China in early 2025, with export markets likely to follow. The company has yet to announce pricing for the EV, but Car News China speculates it could start at around ¥50,000 ($6,900)

Massive VW Data Leak Exposed 800,000 EV Owners’ Movements, From Homes To Brothels

  • Sensitive information of 800,000 VW Group vehicle owners was found to be easily accessible online.
  • EVs from VW, Audi, Seat, and Skoda were affected in Germany, Europe, and other parts of the world.
  • The data breach was discovered by an anonymous whistleblower using freely accessible software.

Many people worry about hackers stealing their personal data, but sometimes, the worst breaches come not from shadowy cybercriminals but straight from the companies we trust. According to a new report from Germany, the VW Group stored sensitive information for 800,000 electric vehicles from various brands on a poorly secured and misconfigured Amazon cloud storage system—essentially leaving the digital door wide open for anyone to waltz in. And not just briefly, but for months on end.

The breach impacts fully electric models across Audi, VW, Seat, and Skoda brands, affecting vehicles not just in Germany but throughout Europe and other parts of the world. Among the treasure trove of exposed data were GPS coordinates, battery charge levels, and other key details about vehicle status, like whether it was switched on or off. That’s right, someone with the right know-how could casually snoop on your car’s whereabouts and habits.

How Bad Is It? Really Bad.

It gets worse. A more tech-savvy user could reportedly connect vehicles to their owners’ personal credentials, thanks to additional data accessible through VW Group’s online services

Crucially, in 466,000 of the 800,000 cases, the location data was so precise that anyone with access could create a detailed profile of each owner’s daily habits. As reported by Spiegel, the massive list of affected owners isn’t just a who’s-who of regular folks. It includes German politicians, entrepreneurs, Hamburg police officers (the entire EV fleet, no less), and even suspected intelligence service employees. Yes, even spies may have been caught up in this digital debacle.

Massive VW Data Leak Exposed 800,000 EV Owners’ Movements, From Homes To Brothels

The Cause: A Software Fumble

This glaring error originated from Cariad, a VW Group company that focuses on software, due to an error that occurred in the summer of 2024. An anonymous whistleblower used freely accessible software to dig up the sensitive information and promptly alerted Chaos Computer Club (CCC), Europe’s largest hacker association.

CCC wasted no time contacting Lower Saxony’s State Data Protection Officer, the Federal Ministry of the Interior, and other security bodies. They also gave VW Group and Cariad 30 days to address the issue before going public. According to CCC, Cariad’s technical team “responded quickly, thoroughly and responsibly”, blocking unauthorized access to its customers’ data.

More: VW Slashes Manager Bonuses By 10% For Two Years, Plans More Cuts Through 203

In a statement to Spiegel, Cariad reassured customers that no sensitive data—such as passwords or payment information—was exposed, emphasizing that they “don’t need to take any action, as no sensitive information like passwords or payment data is affected”. However, the publication raised concerns about how easily this data could have fallen into the wrong hands, including criminals, fraudsters, blackmailers, or even stalkers, posing a serious threat to the affected EV owners

“Shocked” Politicians Demand Action

Understandably, German politicians weren’t thrilled to find themselves on the list of affected parties. One politician who reviewed her leaked data with Spiegel called the findings “shocking,” while another bluntly described the incident as “annoying and embarrassing.” Both urged local automakers to drastically improve their cybersecurity game.

This is not the first time such an incident involving a major automaker occurs, compromising the privacy of its customers. Last year, Toyota admitted a major data breach incident involving 2.15 million owners in Japan.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time an automaker has fumbled customer data. Just last year, Toyota admitted to a massive breach affecting 2.15 million vehicle owners in Japan. Clearly, the automotive industry has a steep learning curve when it comes to protecting user data in the cloud.

Sometimes, though, it’s not even about a security breach. A bombshell report from The New York Times earlier this year revealed that numerous carmakers—including GM, which is now facing lawsuits over the issue—were selling driver data to the insurance industry, leading to higher premiums for many drivers.

Can Automakers Fix This Mess?

The stakes couldn’t be higher. As connectivity features and cloud-based services become standard in modern vehicles, automakers need to ensure they’re doing more than playing catch-up. If customers can’t trust companies to protect their privacy, they may think twice about embracing these high-tech features altogether.

It’s time for the auto industry to treat cybersecurity with the same urgency as crash safety—because right now, it seems some companies are still driving with their digital windows rolled down.

CATL’s New EV Chassis Can Withstand 75 MPH Impact Without Catching Fire Or Exploding

  • CATL’s new Bedrock Chassis was unveiled in China setting new standards on battery safety.
  • The skateboard EV chassis shortens the R&D phase thanks to its modular design.
  • Avatr will be the first automaker to use the new skateboard chassis in a production model.

Battery giant CATL has introduced a new skateboard chassis for electric vehicles, focused on delivering maximum safety for the battery pack. The CATL Bedrock Chassis has survived a demanding 120 km/h (75 mph) frontal collision against a pole without catching fire or exploding, setting (according to the company) new standards in the safety of future EVs.

The skateboard chassis integrates the battery cells, featuring a “three-dimensional biomimetic tortoise shell structure” and an “high-ductility energy-absorbing insulation film”. For its construction, CATL used submarine-grade hot-formed steel, aerospace-grade aluminum alloy, and multiple barrier structures, making it as rigid as possible.

More: See What Happens When Two Cars Hit A Chinese EV At 60KM/H In Triple Crash Test

Furthermore, the high-voltage circuit of the battery is being disconnected in 0.01 seconds after the impact, with the discharge being completed within 0.2 seconds.

Going above and beyond C-NCAP’s requirements

Thanks to its design, the Bedrock Chassis is capable of absorbing 85% of the vehicle’s collision energy, which marks a significant improvement compared to the 60% of a traditional chassis. This is important in collisions as demanding as the frontal pole crash test that simulates impact with trees, power poles, or animals.

According to CATL, the pole crash test at 120 km/h (75 mph) generates 21 times more energy compared to the 56 km/h (35 mph) full-width frontal impact test which is currently the standard in the C-NCAP (China New Car Assessment Program).

Besides the 120 km/h (75 mph) test, the battery cells have undergone high-speed sled impact tests at 60 km/h (37 mph), 90-degree bending tests, and sawing tests, proving their resilience into catching fire or exploding.

\\\\\\\\

CATL

Modular design considerably shortens development times

The company claims that the Bedrock Chassis shortens the R&D cycle for new production models from 36 months to only 12-18 months. This was made possible by its modular design, with the chassis being decoupled from the upper body, allowing to to be used in multiple vehicle types. Furthermore, the platform is compatible with L3 and L4 autonomous driving, and is flexible in terms of software.

CATL has confirmed that Avatr will be the first automaker to use the Bedrock Chassis in a production vehicle, although they haven’t disclosed the timing of its launch.

In a recent video shared on YouTube, CATL explains the measures they have taken to ensure the safety of their battery packs during all different kinds of collisions. The company acknowledged the extra risk involved in side impacts, which is why they have already improved the design of the battery casing.

  • Dodge’s new Charger Daytona coupe hits the market first in R/T and Scat Pack trims.
  • The new model is already in production and is expected to reach its first owners in 2025.
  • The electric muscle car will be joined by an ICE-powered version sometime next year.

Dodge is diving into the world of electric cars, attempting to blend its muscle-bound swagger with the reality of an evolving EV future. The Charger Daytona stands as Dodge’s poster child for this electric gamble, but whether it’s a seamless evolution or a try-hard cosplay of the future is up for debate. Either way, we have a massive photo gallery of the brand’s latest creation in R/T and Scat Pack trims, and there’s a lot to unpack.

Official: Dodge’s New Charger Coming To Europe And The Middle East In 2025

Production of the Charger Daytona is already underway at Stellantis’ Windsor Assembly Plant in Canada, with deliveries expected by early 2025. But if you’re one of those patient types holding out for the ICE-powered Hurricane inline-six model, grab a Snickers—it won’t be ready until spring or so.

Looks That Talk Loud, Even Without a V8

If anything, Dodge knows how to make an entrance, and the Charger Daytona’s design doesn’t shy away from theatrics. The R/T trim, particularly in Redeye, is a standout with its sharp lines and those 20-inch Blacknoise wheels. The see-through grille directing air to the hole on the sculpted hood is an EV-specific feature, as the gas-guzzling Charger needs this space for the engine. The ICE model stands out with its larger bumper intakes and proudly displayed exhaust pipes.

For the Scat Pack, Dodge leans into sporty touches like the “Stage 2” bee emblem on the profile. It also features a lip spoiler at the rear and Brembo brakes with red calipers, included as part of the standard Track Pack. The gallery showcases it in the After Dark (blue) color, alongside other options like White Knuckle (white) and Triple Nickel (silver). These represent just a few of the available colors in Dodge’s official configurator.

The Interior: Muscle Car Meets Tron

Step inside, and it’s like the Charger Daytona has been to a high-end spa and gotten a full digital detox. The cockpit has ditched the dated Challenger vibes for a much slicker (and welcome) setup. The cockpit rocks a 10.25-inch instrument cluster (upgraded to a 16-inch unit in the Scat Pack) and a 12.3-inch infotainment display. The high-mounted center console sends strong muscle car vibes, even though the EV doesn’t need this for the transmission tunnel.

The ambient lighting on the dashboard and door cards gives a futuristic tone to the cabin. Furthermore, the Scat Pack has sports seats with integrated headrests, which are upholstered in suede and Nappa leather.

EV Options With AWD

The Charger Daytona rides on Stellantis’ STLA Large platform, which accommodates both electric and ICE versions. The EV models are powered by dual motors, meaning all-wheel drive comes standard. However, this setup has drawn criticism in early reviews, particularly for the absence of the signature V8 rumble. Dodge’s solution—the Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust, a system that cranks out artificial engine noises—is certainly loud and distinct, but it remains a divisive feature, to say the least.

In the R/T, the combined output is 456 hp (340 kW / 462 PS), while the Scat Pack increases power to 630 hp (470 kW / 637 PS). Additionally, the PowerShot function provides access to a beefier 496 hp (370 kW / 503 PS) in the R/T and 670 hp (500 kW / 679 PS) in the Scat Pack, though it lasts for only 15 seconds each time.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Both EV trims are equipped with a 100.5 kWh battery pack, providing a respectable driving range of 317 miles (510 km) in the R/T and 260 miles (418 km) in the Scat Pack.

Pricing of the Dodge Charger Daytona starts at $59,595 for the R/T and at $73,190 for the Scat Pack.

ICE Is Not Dead (Yet)

While the fully electric muscle car was the first to arrive, the most anticipated version of the new Dodge Charger is the one featuring the twin-turbo 3.0-liter Hurricane inline-six engine. The engine will initially be available in two power outputs, delivering 420 hp (313 kW / 426 PS) and 550 hp (410 kW / 558 PS).

The ICE-powered Charger might have lost the V8 magic of the HEMI-powered Challenger, but it will still satisfy muscle car buyers who don’t want to make the transition to electric. After all, the V8 is out of the question for the new generation, as it would require significant re-engineering in order to fit in the engine bay.

Banshee Power Incoming

Dodge has hinted at some even more bonkers versions of the Charger Daytona in the pipeline, including an EV with the Banshee tri-motor setup. If the concept’s numbers hold up, this thing could crank out a staggering 1,320 hp (984 kW / 1,338 PS), leaving V8-powered Demons and Hellcats sulking in the corner. Whether anyone actually needs that much power is beside the point—this is, America, after all, where “excess” isn’t just a word, it’s a way of life.

Four-Door Charger Sedan

Dodge has confirmed that a four-door Charger version, set to replace the old Charger sedan, is on the way, which means you can haul the kids while pretending you’re Vin Diesel at the same time. Interestingly, both versions of the new model measure 206.6 inches (5,252 mm) long, sharing the same 121-inch (3,074-mm) wheelbase and an identical roofline. This means that the added practicality of the rear doors won’t be combined with extra space for the rear passengers.

Brand New Cybertruck Leaks Oil After 3 Days, Tesla Needs A Month To Fix

  • The owner of a Tesla Cybertruck discovered it was leaking oil immediately after delivery.
  • A Tesla dealer took the truck back and estimates repairs will take at least one month.
  • The owner was denied a replacement or refund and was given a loaner vehicle instead.

Tesla’s Cybertruck is supposed to be the future of transportation, a stainless steel creation that promised to redefine what trucks could be. Instead, it’s often making headlines for redefining customer frustration. One brand-new Cyberbeast was delivered to its owner only to start leaking oil almost immediately. After all, when you drop six figures on Elon’s vision of the future, an oil slick in your driveway is exactly what you signed up for.

To make matters worse, Tesla estimates it will take at least a month to fix the issue, leaving the unhappy customer stuck with a Nissan loaner in the meantime. On top of that, the company reportedly refused to provide a refund or offer a replacement Cybertruck.

More: Pothole Snaps Cybertruck Frame Leading To $34,000 In Repairs, Owner Still Sings Its Praises

The owner of the Cyberbeast, who chose to remain anonymous, shared his story with the nearly 240,000 members of the Tesla Cybertruck Group on Facebook, complete with a few photos documenting the unfortunate leak.

“My brand new Cyberbeast is 3 days old and already having major issue after just one night at home – there’s oil all over the place from the back of the truck (maybe half a gallon per day),” the owner wrote in the post. “According to Tesla, they need to take it back in for service for at least a month or more. It looks like it’s losing drive train oil.”

\\\

Photos: Tesla Cybertruck / Facebook

The owner added: “The problem is, I haven’t even driven it once. What should I do? I think Tesla must buy it back and get me a new one. For now, I’m stuck without a truck driving a loaner Nissan they gave us and still have to make a payment! They won’t give me my money back only after they fix it give it back to me and then they can ask their legal department for a buy back… a nightmare”

While electric vehicles don’t require regular oil changes like their internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts, they do rely on lubricants for high-friction components like electric motors and single-speed transmissions. When something goes wrong, those lubricants can spill out, leading to a situation like this one.

It’s easy to sympathize with the frustration of dealing with a major issue on a truck you’ve never even had the chance to drive. Hopefully, Tesla will not only resolve the problem but also work to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time a Cybertruck has been reported leaking oil. In a previous incident, a small rock reportedly struck a hole in the electric motor’s housing during light off-roading, causing a similar issue. That repair came with a $7,660 bill, which the Tesla dealer refused to cover under warranty.

Nio’s Affordable New Firefly EV Hatchback Has LEDs That Look Like iPhone Cameras

  • Firefly is a new brand from Chinese EV maker Nio, set to launch in global markets.
  • Their first model is a small EV hatchback featuring a distinctive front end.
  • The Firefly is priced from ¥148,800 ($20,400) in China and will also roll out in Europe.

Nio has finally launched the much-anticipated Firefly brand in China, which will be targeting the most affordable corner of the EV market. Its first model is a small electric hatchback with swappable batteries, aimed at global markets including Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.

Firefly EVs will be positioned below the Nio and Onvo in terms of size, features, and pricing. The goal of the brand is to make “small, electric high-end cars accessible to a broader audience”.

More: Is BYD Making A Cutprice Electric Porsche 911 Rival? (New Photos)

The urban hatchback is simply known as the Firefly. Responsible for its design is ex-BMW and Ford designer Kris Tomasson. The exterior has a few references to the discontinued Honda e, with a similar greenhouse, a black-finished roof, and matching pillars. The signature trait of the Firefly is the three-piece circular LED headlights and taillights that look like iPhone cameras.

Other highlights include the flush door handles, the six-spoke wheels, and the clean surfacing. According to Firefly, the plastic cladding on the lower part of the bodywork is made from a sustainable material. The company didn’t reveal the dimensions of the EV, which looks like a rival to the likes of the BYD Dolphin, Citroen e-C3, Fiat Grande Panda, and Renault 5.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\

The latest Chinese EV features a 92-liter (3.2 cubic feet) frunk with layered storage and a drainage function, which is larger than what you get in most EVs. This is combined with a boot that can reach up to 1,250 lt (44 cubic feet) when the rear seats are folded flat. There are no photos of the interior, but earlier spy shots revealed a minimalist dashboard with a Tesla-style infotainment touchscreen and a digital instrument cluster.

Firefly claims that the turning circle of 9.4 m (30.8 feet) and the “multi-scene automatic parking assist function” will make it easy to navigate the EV in tight urban areas.

The EV has been engineered to score five-star ratings on the C-NCAP and Euro-NCAP tests. This was made possible thanks to the extensive use of high-strength steel and aluminum comprising 83.4% of the body structure, double anti-collision beams in the front doors, and nine airbags as standard, and claims to offer the best torsional stiffness in its segment (35,700 Nm).

Details about the electric motors and battery pack have yet to be announced. However, we know that the latter will be swappable, although not compatible with the existing battery swapping stations of Nio and Onvo due to its smaller size.

The Firefly is already available to pre-order in China for ¥148,800 ($20,400), ahead of its official market launch in April 2025. The model will reportedly roll out in Europe in the first half of 2025, where it is expected to be more expensive. As reported by Car News China, Nio wants the products of the Firefly brand to be available in 25 countries by the end of 2025.

Tesla Model Y Juniper Caught With Split Headlights And Rear Light Bar

  • Camouflaged prototypes of the updated Model Y have been spotted all over the world.
  • The Tesla Model Y Juniper will feature exterior, interior, and mechanical upgrades.
  • Chinese media report that production of the updated EV will start in Shanghai this month.

The Tesla Model Y is preparing for what may be its most notable refresh since its 2019 debut. While the core design remains largely unchanged, this update—codenamed Project Juniper—promises to introduce just enough new features and tweaks to help the world’s best-selling EV stay ahead of the competition and maintain its global dominance.

More: Everything We Know About The Tesla Model Y Juniper

Over the past month, numerous camouflaged prototypes of the refreshed Model Y, which will likely be marketed as a 2026MY, have been spotted in the United States, Europe, and Asia, adding fuel to rumors that production of the updated version could begin soon, starting in China. These sightings have offered glimpses of what Tesla has been working on to further refine its already popular SUV.

What’s New on the Outside?

The updated Model Y Juniper appears to take a page from the playbook of the Model 3 “Highland,” with a refreshed design that’s playing it safe. Judging by the camo-covered test cars, Tesla’s engineers have zeroed in on tweaking the front and rear ends while leaving the middle section untouched.

Fresh spy shots from Europe at the start of the new year offer the clearest look yet at the Model Y’s updated front end, showcasing split LED headlights and a more streamlined bumper design. A similar look was spotted on test vehicles in recent spy videos from California, hinting that the Model Y might embrace a distinctive aesthetic, setting it apart from the sharper, more minimalist design of its closely related sedan counterpart.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Baldauf

That said, these are still test vehicles, so it’s possible that some elements—like the split headlamp design—may not make it to production. Tesla has experimented with multiple front-end designs over the past year, with some prototypes featuring the split headlights and others without, so there’s still some mystery around the final look.

At the rear, heavy camouflage obscures much of the design, but slimmer taillights and fresh LED graphics are visible. A recent video posted by X (formerly Twitter) user Suppakit Phonorthong also shows a full-width lightbar stretching across the rear end, which aligns with earlier spy shots of a frosted-finish LED taillight bar. If this makes it to production, it could be one of the most noticeable design upgrades.

New Longer Six-Seater Variant for China

Tesla plans to introduce two versions of the refreshed Model Y. The standard five-seater model will remain available, along with an optional third-row configuration for two additional passengers. But specifically for the Chinese market, Tesla is reportedly working on a longer-wheelbase six-seater version, scheduled to debut in the fourth quarter of 2025. This version will cater to the market’s demand for more spacious family-oriented vehicles.

Interior Updates

Inside, the updated Model Y is expected to embrace an even more minimalist design by eliminating traditional wiper and turn signal stalks, along with the gear shifter. These controls will likely be replaced by touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel and the central touchscreen, just like the Model 3 ‘Highland’ facelift.

On the bright side, Tesla is introducing new features aimed at enhancing both comfort and functionality. The refreshed Model Y will feature a redesigned (and less toyish-looking) steering wheel, slimmer infotainment screen bezels, more supportive front seats with a cooling function, multi-color ambient lighting, and a new rear-seat touchscreen—similar to what we’ve seen in the Model 3 facelift.

Read: Tesla Exec Confirms $30K Model Q For 2025, Deutsche Bank Report Claims

More importantly, the EV will benefit from higher-quality materials inside the cabin and improved NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness), thanks to chassis and suspension upgrades. These enhancements will likely be accompanied by onboard technology updates as well.

What About Performance?

Mechanically, the Model Y’s battery and powertrain options are expected to carry over from the current version. However, Tesla might introduce a more powerful Model Y Performance variant with specifications similar to the updated Model 3 Performance, which would appeal to customers looking for more speed and excitement in their electric SUV.

Other carryover options will likely include the standard and long-range versions, available in either RWD or AWD dual-motor configurations.

— Suppakit Phonorthong (@suppalatte) December 29, 2024

When Will It Be Available?

According to reports from Chinese media, including Sina, series production of the refreshed Model Y “Juniper” is set to begin this month at Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory. This timeline aligns with Elon Musk’s earlier statement that the updated Model Y would not launch before the end of 2024.

More: New Tesla Models Crippled By AP4 Computer Failures, Breaking Essential Features

In fact, some sources suggest that Tesla has already produced early prototypes in Shanghai as part of its preparations for full-scale production.

Should You Wait or Buy Now?

In the lead-up to the updated model’s release, Tesla has cut the price of the Model Y in China by an additional ¥10,000 ($1,370), dropping it to its lowest price ever. The move seems to be paying off: between January and November 2024, the Model Y was China’s best-selling vehicle, with 373,000 units sold, accounting for 73% of Tesla’s sales in the region.

For U.S. buyers, the decision to wait for the updated Model Y or purchase the current version comes down to timing and incentives. Buying now secures the $7,500 federal tax credit, which could disappear under the next administration’s policies. However, the upcoming refresh promises meaningful upgrades, so waiting might be worth it for those who value the latest features and designs.

Proton’s First EV Looks Like A Porsche Ordered From Ali Express

  • The Proton e.MAS 7 has debuted in Malaysia as the automaker’s first electric vehicle.
  • This SUV is a rebadged Geely Galaxy E5, equipped with a 215-hp front-mounted motor.
  • The compact e.MAS 7 offers 410 km range, competitive pricing, and stylish color options.

Malaysia’s Proton has just unveiled its first-ever EV, the e.MAS 7, an SUV that wants to stand out but doesn’t quite stick the landing. Beneath its Porsche styling cues and ambitious marketing, the e.MAS 7 is, at its core, a rebadged Geely Galaxy E5. It’s a straightforward exercise in badge engineering that doesn’t break new ground but does manage to look modern.

More: Huawei’s Maextro S800 Looks Like Someone Put A Maybach, A Rolls And A Porsche In The Blender

Let’s start with the basics. The Proton e.MAS 7 is a compact SUV that stretches 4,615 mm long (that’s 181.7 inches if you’re too cool for the metric system) and boasts a wheelbase of 2,750 mm (108.3 inches). If you’ve seen the Geely Galaxy, congratulations, you’ve already seen the e.MAS 7. The only visible differences are a Proton badge slapped onto the hood and the glaring absence of the Geely’s illuminated grille. Proton’s big EV debut is essentially the automotive equivalent of putting a new logo on a Word doc template and calling it “custom design.”

Porsche Vibes, but Make It Discount

The e.MAS 7and Galaxy twins borrow some pretty obvious Porsche styling cues. The full-width LED taillights? Yep, straight off a Cayenne. The greenhouse and surface sculpting? Also Cayenne-ish. The paint? Oh, you mean “Quartz Rose,” which just happens to look suspiciously like Porsche Macan EV’s Provence debut color? Totally a coincidence, we’re sure.

Proton also offers four other shades, including Platinum Silver, Turquoise Green, Slate Grey, and Lithium White, with an Indigo Blue interior, in case you’re into low-budget luxury cosplay.

Of course, the Geely Galaxy E5 and Proton e.MAS 7 aren’t the only Chinese-derived EVs borrowing heavily from Porsche’s design playbook. The taillights on the BYD Han sedan and Song L crossover look blatantly inspired by the Porsche Panamera and Cayenne Coupe, just like Geely’s own Galaxy E8 sedan.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Powertrain and Batteries

Back to Proton, the e.MAS 7 shares its underpinnings and specifications with its Geely twin. It rides on Geely’s Global Intelligent New Energy Architecture (GEA) and packs a single front-mounted electric motor producing 215 hp and 320 Nm of torque. It’ll hit 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.9 seconds, which is decent, making it the quickest Proton yet, but still firmly in “That’s fine, I guess” territory.

There are two options for the battery pack with a capacity of 49.52 kWh or 60.22 kWh, allowing WLTP ranges of 345 km (214 miles) or 410 km (255 miles) respectively. As reported by Paultan, Proton claims that the battery retains a health status of 90.5% after 921 complete cycles, which is the equivalent of 400,000 km (~250,000 miles)

Here’s where Proton is banking on the e.MAS 7 standing out—its price tag. The EV starts at RM109,800 ($24,400) and tops out at RM123,800 ($27,500). That’s significantly cheaper than its main rival, the BYD Atto 3, which starts at RM149,800 ($33,259), and is currently the best-selling EV in Malaysia.

Stellantis Delays Electric Ram To 2026, Range-Extended Truck To Launch First

  • The Ram 1500 REV will launch in 2026, over a year later than initially planned.
  • Stellantis acknowledged that market demand for half-ton EV pickups is slowing.
  • The 1500 Ramcharger range-extender will debut in H1 2025, driven by demand.

In a decision that probably won’t shock anyone following the EV market, Stellantis has delayed the launch of its all-electric Ram 1500 REV yet again, this time pushing it all the way back to 2026. Why? They’re blaming “slowing industry demand” for electric trucks, which is a polite way of saying customers aren’t exactly lining up to trade their gas-guzzling trucks for battery-powered workhorses.

But don’t worry, Stellantis has a Plan B: the Ram 1500 Ramcharger, a range-extender version of the truck now scheduled to arrive in 2025 to help bridge the gap.

More: Ex-CEO Tavares Personally Killed The Hemi V8, Stellantis Insiders Reveal

Unveiled in early 2023, the Ram 1500 REV was initially promised for a late 2024 market launch as the brand’s first electric offering. However, Stellantis recently pushed the rollout to early 2025, with former CEO Carlos Tavares insisting they didn’t want to rush such an important model. Now, the company has pushed the Ford F-150 Lightning and Tesla Cybertruck rival all the way to 2026, revealing the real reason behind their hesitation.

Consumer Preferences Drive Decision

According to Stellantis, the decision to prioritize the range-extender version over the EV was driven by “overwhelming consumer interest,” the need to “maintain a competitive advantage in the technology,” and “slowing industry demand for half-ton BEV pickups.” In simpler terms, customers seem to favor the Ramcharger’s extended range, which also makes it less dependent on the still-developing charging infrastructure.

Stellantis Delays Electric Ram To 2026, Range-Extended Truck To Launch First
Ram 1500 Ramcharger

The Ramcharger runs on a 3.6-liter V6 engine that acts as a generator for the 92 kWh battery pack, offering a range of 690 miles (1,110 km), compared to the 500 miles (805 km) offered by the all-electric version. It’s also packing a bit more punch, delivering 663 hp (494 kW / 672 PS), slightly edging out the 1500 REV’s 654 hp (448 kW / 663 PS), though we doubt anyone would notice the difference.

Production of the Ram 1500 will “primarily” take place at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant in Michigan, covering both the electrified and traditional ICE versions.

Leadership Shake-Up

This shift in strategy coincides with a change in leadership for the Ram brand. Tim Kuniskis, a 32-year company veteran known for breathing life into Dodge with the Hellcat lineup, has returned to his post as CEO of Ram after retiring in June from his role overseeing both Ram and Dodge. He replaces Chris Feuell, following the fallout from Carlos Tavares’ resignation as Stellantis CEO. Kuniskis steps into his new position at a crucial moment for Stellantis, as the company works to balance its electrification ambitions with the realities of current market demand.

Is BYD Making A Cutprice Electric Porsche 911 Rival? (New Photos)

  • A camouflaged prototype suggests that BYD is working on a new electric sports car.
  • The EV looks like the production version of the Fang Cheng Bao Super 9 concept.
  • The electric coupe is set to debut under the Denza brand at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show in April.

Update 12/19: New photos of the camouflaged prototype have surfaced online, showcasing its muscular stance, haphazard camouflage, and unfinished bodywork from various angles. Check them out below.

Remember when Chinese automakers were known for making knockoff versions of Western cars with all the structural integrity of a soda can? Well, those days are officially dead. BYD, the company that’s already entered the world of supercars with the YangWang U9 capable of jumping (literally) and doing zero-to-sixty in sub-two seconds has now decided to give the world one more reason to side-eye Stuttgart: a Denza-branded electric sports car rumored to launch in 2025.

More: 2026 BYD Dolphin EV Breaks Cover With A Prettier Face And A New Powertrain Option

The teaser comes in the form of a camouflaged prototype that was spotted in China on a flatbed truck. The blurry Weibo snapshot shows a coupe with classic sports car proportions but missing vital bits like the headlights and rear bumper, which either weren’t ready or BYD decided to keep them a surprise. Think of it as a sneak peek at your dream car before it puts its pants on.

A BYD Sports Car? Blame Wolfgang Egger

Now, if you’re wondering who’s responsible for BYD’s glow-up from “budget EVs” to “supercar contender,” point your finger squarely at Wolfgang Egger. This is the guy who’s worked at Audi, Lamborghini, Alfa Romeo, and basically every design studio with a leather couch and espresso machine.

Egger reportedly put his stamp on the concept car that inspired this prototype: the Fang Cheng Bao Super 9, a two-door coupe unveiled in April 2024. Think of it as the sports car you’d design if you had a portfolio full of Italian exotics and a mandate to beat Tesla. And yes, BYD seriously needs to rethink its naming strategy, as “Fang Cheng Bao Super 9” sounds less like a sports car and more like the combo platter you regret ordering at 3 am.

Of course, BYD isn’t stopping at just one version. Rumor has it a roadster variant is also on the way, that’ll look more similar to the speedster concept.

Is BYD Making A Cutprice Electric Porsche 911 Rival? (New Photos)

BYD didn’t reveal much in the way of technical details during the concept’s presentation, aside from confirming its fully electric nature. However, Car News China speculates that the production version could borrow the tri-motor powertrain from the Denza Z9. With a combined output of 952 hp (710 kW / 965 PS), this setup promises some seriously impressive performance.

Europe, You’re Next

What makes things more interesting is that the Denza-badged sports car won’t be exclusively available in China, as it could also be offered in Europe. Denza will make its debut in the Old Continent with the Z9 GT in 2025, and the electric sports car sounds like a great option for expanding its lineup.

The EV is expected to debut at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show in April, exactly one year after the concept. As reported by local media Autohome, pricing could start from around ¥300,000 (equal to around $41,200) in China, making it significantly more affordable than any variant of the Porsche 911 despite offering high levels of performance.

Global EV Sales Shatter Records In November Thanks To China’s Unstoppable Growth

  • November 2024 was the strongest month ever for global EV sales, with 1.8 million units.
  • EV sales are up 25% year-to-date in 2024, with 1.3 of the 1.8 million units coming from China.
  • Europe is down 3%, while the US and Canada are up 10% in year-to-date EV sales figures.

While automakers navigate shifting electrification strategies, the global electric vehicle market continues to grow steadily. November 2024 set yet another sales record, with 1.8 million EVs sold worldwide, bringing the year-to-date total to an impressive 15.2 million units.

More: China’s Growing Love For EVs Has Oil Companies Freaking Out

According to market research firm Rho Motion, November marked the third consecutive month of record-breaking EV sales, with an additional 100,000 units sold compared to October’s previous high. This represents a sharp 32 percent leap from November 2023.

China Leads the Charge

Unsurprisingly, China continues to dominate the EV stage by a huge margin with an astonishing 1.3 million units sold in November, accounting for nearly 70 percent of global sales. Much of this growth came from rising demand for models produced by Geely, Tesla, and Changan, bolstered by China’s aggressive push toward electrification.

Between January and November 2024, China’s EV sales soared by 40 percent year-over-year, reaching a remarkable 9.7 million units and dwarfing sales in all other regions.

The global tally of 15.2 million EVs sold between January and November 2024 represents a 25 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Breaking this down, China was followed by the European Union, EFTA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland) and the UK at 2.7 million (-3%), the US and Canada at 1.6 million (+10%), and the rest of the world contributing 1.1 million (+25%).

Regional Gains and Setbacks

In Europe, major markets like Germany, France, and Italy are experiencing a slowdown, with year-to-date sales shrinking by 3 percent. However, the UK stands out as an exception, posting a 17 percent increase in sales thanks to stronger demand in the second half of 2024. Still, uncertainty looms as the UK government considers scaling back its EV mandate, citing feasibility concerns.

Across the Atlantic, the US and Canada have maintained a steady 10 percent increase in EV sales year-to-date, totaling 1.6 million units sold so far. Donald Trump’s recent election victory is expected to trigger a year-end rush for zero-emission vehicles, as buyers hurry to claim Biden-era tax credits before they risk being cut next year.

Charles Lester, Data Manager at Rho Motion, commented: “This quarter has picked up significantly for EV sales globally as we see record-breaking month after record-breaking month. However, the regional picture is somewhat uneven with Europe shrinking 3% this year so far, and once more China accounts for over two-thirds of the electric vehicles sold in November.”

Renault 5 Turbo 3E Is An Electric Hyper Hatch With Over 500 HP

  • Renault is crazy enough to put the R5 Turbo 3E concept into production with over 500 hp.
  • The RWD model rides on a bespoke carbon monocoque, featuring dual electric motors.
  • The design is inspired by the original R5 Turbo from the ’80s with modernized features.

Renault has unveiled the production version of the 2022 R5 Turbo 3E Concept, serving as a modern-day successor to the classic R5 Turbo I and II from the ’80s and the Clio V6 from the ’00s. The hyper hatch rides on a bespoke platform and features a fully electric RWD powertrain with over 500 hp.

The third iteration of the R5 Turbo homologation special has retro-futuristic styling, looking like a heavily redesigned restomod on steroids. It retains the signature boxy fender flares of the original, although here they are combined with oversized wheels shod in ultra-wide tires.

The exterior has evolved compared to the concept, adding a sleeker greenhouse and reworked aerodynamics. The pronounced bumpers and side skirts are finished in white, contrasting with the yellow bodywork and the black roof.

The LED headlights appear to be a modernized version of the classic R5, while the taillights are sourced from the new R5 E-Tech Electric. The charging port is hidden in one of the side intakes, which were designed to cool the electric powertrain.

Despite the resemblance, the R5 Turbo 3E is not mechanically related to the standard Renault 5, as it rides on a bespoke carbon monocoque chassis which is said to be “both lightweight and extremely stiff”.

The French pocket rocket is powered by two electric motors mounted in the rear wheels. With a combined output of over 500 hp (373 kW / 507 PS), the R5 Turbo 3E is the most powerful production model by Renault, promising a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in under 3.5 seconds.

Luca de Meo, Renault Group CEO, said that the R5 Turbo 3E is something for “only for the brave”, adding that “it’s going to be fun”. According to the company, “the Group is bringing the best of its skills and expertise to the development of this ultimate Renault brand icon”, likely hinting at Alpine’s involvement in the project.

Renault didn’t announce details about the production model’s availability and pricing, but Autocar reports it will arrive in 2026. Judging from the bespoke nature of the build, we expect it to be offered in limited numbers and at a high price.

The automaker offered a glimpse to the R5 Turbo 3E in the “Anatomy of a Comeback” documentary series that is available on Prime Video. The reveal, which you can watch in the video below, took place behind the closed doors of the design center. It was hosted by Renault Group CEO Luca de Meo, Renault CEO Fabrice Cambolive, and Vice President of Renault Design Gilles Vidal.

Stellantis’ DS Mocks Audi And BMW, Turns Their EVs Into Pumpkins

  • The launch of the new DS N°8 poked fun at established rivals with a clever jab.
  • The EV was parked between an Audi Q4 e-tron and a BMW i4 that turned into pumpkins.
  • The DS Automobiles CEO made a reference to the classic Cinderella tale during the reveal.

DS Automobiles has just unveiled their new flagship, the fully electric N°8 fastback crossover, and it’s clear they’re trying (perhaps a bit too hard) to grab attention. During the official presentation, the French automaker had the gall—er, the cheek—to throw a little jab at the competition, recreating a scene from the folk tale Cinderella to make their point. And what’s that point, you ask? Well, the DS N°8 wants to be the new luxury carriage for those who fancy a bit of magic in their drive; no pumpkins required.

The N°8 was revealed by none other than Olivier Francois, CEO of Fiat, Abarth, and DS Automobiles, who made a rather grandoise statement by calling the N°8 a “modern-day carriage.” This, of course, was meant to evoke the heritage of DS, a brand that’s barely old enough to legally drink in some countries. A bit of a stretch, sure, but it sets the stage for what was to follow.

In a rather Cinderella-esque moment at the end of the video, Francois parks the N°8 between an Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron and a BMW i4, both of which were conveniently de-badged, but we got the message loud and clear. To top it off, he delivered a final punchline:

“Well, I’m convinced that if Cinderella were written in 2025, she would undoubtedly ride in a N°8. And allow me to say, by next summer, when N°8 is launched, it might just be like the fairy tale: the 12 strokes of midnight may very well sound for the competition’s luxurious carriages.”

At this point, the Audi and BMW are transformed nto pumpkins, while the DS N°8 remains unscathed, because, of course, it’s the star of the show. For the uninitiated, Cinderella’s fairy godmother turned a pumpkin into a golden carriage to get her to the ball, only to have the magic wear off at midnight. You know, just in case you hadn’t picked up on the metaphor.

Now, setting aside the cheeky marketing, DS Automobiles has had a bit of a rough ride since its split from Citroen in 2014. Competing with more established brands in both sales and brand recognition has proven tricky.

Positioned as one of Stellantis’s premium brands alongside Lancia and Alfa Romeo but below Maserati, DS doesn’t have the decades of heritage that BMW or Mercedes-Benz can rely on. Instead, it shares its underpinnings with other Stellantis models, while attempting to carve out its own niche with quirky French styling, more upscale interiors, and a slightly more refined chassis setup. Think of DS like Genesis, but focused more on the lower segments—if that makes sense. And that’s the approach they’ve taken with the N°8, which is designed to challenge the sedans and coupe-SUVs in Europe’s premium midsize segment.

Francois was quick to highlight that the 4.82-meter-long (189.8-inch) N°8 combines the elevated driving position of an SUV with the elegance and class of a grand sedan. It also boasts the longest range in its segment with up to 750 km (466 miles) on a single charge.

In the video, the CEO went on at length about the interior, claiming it offers “extreme comfort, beauty, silence, and refinement.” He also highlighted that the N°8’s seats provide a spa-like experience, complete with massaging, ventilating, and heating functions, plus, a neck warmer for good measure.

But, as with all things that sound too good to be true, it remains to be seen whether buyers will shell out for this French luxury crossover when they can just as easily reach for a more traditional choice from the likes of BMW, Audi, or Mercedes-Benz.

New Toyota Urban Cruiser Is An Electric Suzuki in Disguise With Up To 181 HP and AWD

  • The all-new Urban Cruiser EV expands Toyota’s growing SUV lineup in Europe.
  • The model is a twin to the Suzuki e-Vitara, with a Toyota-specific face.
  • It is available with 3 power outputs (FWD/AWD) and 2 battery options.

Toyota’s latest entry into the ever-growing electric SUV game, the Urban Cruiser, has just been unveiled. And let’s be honest, if you think it looks familiar, you’re right. It’s basically a Suzuki e-Vitara in disguise, just with a Toyota badge and some slightly sharper edges. The Urban Cruiser is available in both FWD and AWD, offering what Toyota claims is a “spacious” cabin, for its size, at least.

Sizing Up the Urban Cruiser’s Footprint

Measuring 4,285 mm (168.7 inches) long, the Urban Cruiser slots in between the Yaris Cross and the C-HR in Toyota’s crowded European SUV lineup. Its exterior is heavily influenced by last year’s Urban SUV Concept, with just enough toned-down features to make it acceptable for production—basically, Toyota’s way of saying, “We liked that design, but we needed it to be less ‘concept car’ and more ‘can sell in 2025.’”

Now, if you’re wondering what makes it distinctly Toyota, it’s the face. Hammerhead headlights and unique tail light graphics set it apart from its Suzuki twin, but that’s pretty much where the differences end. Oh, and the wheels, they’re identical to the e-Vitara’s, so don’t bother squinting too hard when you spot one on the road.

Interior

The same goes for the interior, which features a bulky digital cockpit with a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch infotainment screen. The floating center console is decked out in glossy black inserts, paired with dark-themed upholstery. Options include a JBL premium audio system and a fixed sunroof, while all trims come standard with an array of ADAS.

Despite the small footprint of the Urban Cruiser, Toyota claims that the interior can be as spacious as a midsize SUV offering. This is made possible by the EV underpinnings and the generous wheelbase of 2,700 mm (106.3 inches), which is 140 mm (5.5 inches) longer compared to the Yaris Cross. Furthermore, the rear bench seats have sliding and reclining functions for added practicality.

Powertrain Options

As with its Suzuki twin, the Toyota Urban Cruiser rides on an EV-dedicated architecture and will be available with three power outputs and two lithium-iron phosphate battery options. The FWD models deliver 142 hp (106 kW / 144 PS) or 172 hp (128 kW / 174 PS) from a single electric motor, while the AWD version is good for 182 hp (135 kW / 184 PS) from a dual-motor setup. The smaller 49 kWh battery is exclusively available with FWD, while the 61 kWh unit can be had with both FWD and AWD.

WLTP range figures haven’t been disclosed yet, but the Urban Cruiser does feature an energy-saving heat pump for the A/C and a manually activated battery pre-heating function—ideal for colder climates.

Market Debut

The Toyota Urban Cruiser will make its first public outing at the 2025 Brussels Motor Show in January. Pricing will be announced closer to market launch in Europe sometime next year.

Toyota states that it is committed to achieving zero CO2 emissions in Europe by 2035 and full carbon neutrality by 2040. The automaker aims to have 15 zero-emission vehicles in its lineup by 2026, including six BEVs on a dedicated platform.
