Stellantis’ New Electric Truck Makes Slate’s Budgets Look Absurd

  • The Fiat TRIS is an ultra-light commercial vehicle designed specifically for last-mile delivery.
  • It features three wheels and is available in chassis-cab, flatbed, and pickup configurations.
  • Powered by a 12 hp electric motor, the TRIS has a 6.9 kWh battery offering a 56-mile range.

The current state of electric trucks might seem like it’s all about bulky, four-wheeled behemoths with sky-high price tags, but Stellantis just threw a curveball that’ll make you rethink everything you thought you knew. Fiat, known for its expertise in city cars like the Panda and the 500, has expanded to an even smaller segment.

The fully electric Fiat TRIS is the Italian automaker’s first-ever three-wheeled model, tailored for last-mile delivery. It was designed at the Centro Stile in Turin as an “affordable ultra-light commercial vehicle”. It will initially be sold in Africa and the Middle East, although availability may later expand to Europe.

More: Fiat’s 500 Hybrid Lets You Shift Your Own Gears

At just 3.17 meters (124.8 inches) in length, the Fiat TRIS is compact yet versatile. It’s available in three configurations: chassis-cabin, flatbed, and pickup, all riding on the same chassis and front-end design, featuring arrow-shaped LEDs and a snappy two-tone color scheme.

The utilitarian interior is all about practicality, designed with ergonomics in mind. It includes a 5.7-inch digital instrument cluster, a USB-C port, a glove box, storage nets, and a seat built for comfort during those “long working hours.” The absence of doors makes it easier for the driver to hop in and out during frequent stops. For safety and compliance, it’s equipped with a three-point seatbelt, front LEDs, a reverse buzzer, and a washer tank, ensuring the little LCV meets European homologation standards.

Impressive Capacity for Its Size

The TRIS offers a cargo area of 2.25 square meters (24.2 square feet), which is surprisingly spacious for a vehicle with such a compact footprint. It also impresses with a payload capacity of 540 kg (1,191 lbs), while keeping the Gross Vehicle Weight at just 1,025 kg (2,260 lbs).

Stellantis’ New Electric Truck Makes Slate’s Budgets Look Absurd

The LCV is powered by a 48-Volt electric motor generating 12 hp (9 kW) and 45 Nm (33 lb-ft) of torque. Energy is stored in a 6.9 kWh battery from the Fiat Topolino, offering a WMTC range of 90 km (56 miles). Luckily, a full charge is completed in 4 hours and 40 minutes from a standard 220V household plug.

Three-wheeled vehicles aren’t exactly famous for their stability. But Fiat insists that the TRIS’ 12-inch wheels, wide rear track, and extended wheelbase will keep things steady. Despite its lightweight design, the EV’s chassis and tubular structure are said to match the “structural sturdiness found in passenger cars,” all while being protected from corrosion by an automotive-grade zinc coating.

More: Fiat’s Next Big Thing Is This Small Thing Reviving A Classic

Fiat CEO Olivier Francois stated: “With its debut in the Middle East and Africa, TRIS is set to transform last-mile mobility and open new doors to economic empowerment and social inclusion. And we believe its potential goes far beyond – Europe may be next, because this kind of smart, sustainable solution speaks a universal language.”

The TRIS is being produced in Morocco, alongside other Stellantis microcars like the Citroen Ami, Fiat Topolino, and Opel Rocks Electric. Pricing has yet to be announced, but expect it to be competitive and very much in line with Fiat’s reputation for affordability.

New Lexus Sedan Gunning For Mercedes And BMW In Europe

  • Lexus has introduced the European version of the new ES, ahead of its market launch in 2026.
  • The executive sedan offers the option between two hybrid and two fully electric powertrains.
  • Besides the fully redesigned exterior, the new generation improves comfort and ride quality.

The Lexus ES has never been Europe’s sedan of choice, but the Japanese brand is clearly determined to change that with the latest generation. After debuting globally at the Shanghai Auto Show in China, the ES is making its European premiere a month later, hoping to give heavy hitters like the BMW 5-Series, Mercedes E-Class, and Audi A6 a run for their money.

More: New Lexus ES Drops The Grille And Embraces Electrification

A fixture in the Lexus lineup since 1989, the ES has had a rather slow and steady European introduction, making its way into Eastern Europe in 2010 and arriving in Western Europe only in late 2018. It was seen as an indirect successor to the now-discontinued GS, though many might argue it never quite found its European groove.

New Design, New Powertrains

The eighth-generation ES comes with a complete redesign that aims to improve its appeal. The exterior is fresh and modern, with a body-colored spindle grille flanked by sharp, slimmer L-shaped headlights. Hybrid models feature a slim grille for added cooling, while the EV models take a more minimalist approach to the front end.

\\\\\\\\\\\\

The profile is now more aerodynamic than before, with a smooth sloping roofline that leads to a fastback-style rear. At the back, a full-width LED bar and sharp shoulder lines give it a more aggressive stance.

In terms of size, the new ES has grown. A lot. It’s now 165 mm (about 6.5 inches) longer than the previous model, with an extra 80 mm (3.1 inches) between the axles, making for a far roomier interior.

A Tech-Filled Interior

Step inside, and Lexus has clearly worked to elevate the tech experience. The highlight is a massive 14-inch infotainment screen, marking the largest display in any Lexus model so far, and which can be customized with various shortcuts and widgets. It’s paired with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. However, for Europeans, the option for a passenger display that is available in China, seems to be off the table.

More: The Tesla Model Y Has A New Rival From Toyota That’s Half The Price

Lexus also promises a quieter cabin, thanks to improved sound insulation and higher-quality materials. The interior features include illuminated panels made using a printing technique called bamboo layering, as well as synthetic leather embossing. The “Hidden Switches,” touch-sensitive controls that appear only when the car is on, are a neat trick. For audiophiles, a 17-speaker Mark Levinson Surround Sound System is available.

Comfort has been improved too thanks to the new seat design, with a higher seating position for easier ingress/egress, a reclining rear bench, and greater support for the front passengers. If you’re being chauffeured, you’ll be happy to know that the front passenger seat has a folding function that maximizes rear legroom. Finally, there is an enhanced Lexus Safety System + ADAS suite.

\\\\\\\\\\\\

Hybrid And EV Options

The new ES rides on an improved version of the TNGA-K architecture, which already underpins several vehicles in the group, including the Toyota Camry and the Crown Crossover. The new generation introduces a multi-link system on the rear axle, alongside a new suspension setup and increased rigidity. According to Lexus, these upgrades result in an improved ride quality and a more composed drive.

More: Last Chance To Own A Naturally Aspirated V8 Sports Sedan Before They’re Gone For Good

When it comes to the powertrains, European buyers will have a choice between two self-charging hybrid options in FWD and AWD configurations. The base ES 300h produces 199 hp (148 kW / 201 PS), while the ES 350h is more powerful with 244 hp (182 kW / 247 PS), both relying on the same 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine.

For the first time, however, the ES is available with fully electric powertrains. The FWD-only ES 350e produces 221 hp (165 kW / 224 PS) and comes with a 77 kWh battery. The flagship ES 500e, with AWD, produces 338 hp (252 kW / 343 PS) and carries a 75 kWh battery pack. Lexus hasn’t confirmed the official WLTP range figures yet, but they expect the most efficient model to go up to 530 km (329 miles) on a single charge.

Availability

European sales of the new Lexus ES are expected to kick off in Spring 2026, with final pricing and detailed specs to be announced closer to launch. Whether this new generation can make a dent in the dominance of European luxury sedans remains to be seen, but it’s certainly taking its best shot.

Stellantis Turns Small SUV Into An Electric Rally Weapon

  • The Opel Mokka GSE Rally is built to meet the FIA’s new eRally5 regulations.
  • The rally car boasts a distinctive livery, a roof scoop, new wheels and bumpers.
  • It will be followed by a roadgoing Mokka GSE performance EV later this year.

Opel has given its GSE performance sub-brand for electric vehicles a fresh update, and before the first production model hits the streets, they’ve already rolled out a rally car. Named the Mokka GSE Rally, it’s a more rugged, performance-focused version of the compact SUV, featuring an electric powertrain and a suite of chassis upgrades.

Visually, the rally-ready Mokka stands out with a special livery featuring black, gray, and yellow graphics. It rolls on large alloy wheels with yellow brake calipers, and the sporty front and rear bumpers, along with a roof-mounted intake, set it apart from the standard Mokka Electric.

Some of these features, like the more aggressive body kit, will likely carry over to the roadgoing Opel Mokka GSE. This performance version of the electric SUV is expected to debut in late 2025, likely sharing specs with its mechanically similar counterparts, the Abarth 600e and Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce.

Back to the rally car, it is compatible with the FIA’s new eRally5 regulations and will eventually replace the Opel Corsa Electric Rally that has been around since 2019. The SUV is fitted with a single electric motor delivering 278 hp (207 kW / 280 PS) and 345 Nm (255 lb-ft) of torque. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a multi-plate limited-slip differential and a racing transmission.

\\\\\\\\\\\

The 54 kWh battery pack is carried over from the Mokka Electric but gets added protection with a special encapsulation and underride guard. Chassis upgrades include a rally-spec suspension from Bilstein, with reinforced McPherson struts in the front and modified springs and dampers on the rigid rear axle. Additionally, the ABS, ESP, and traction control systems have been removed, giving drivers full freedom to push the Mokka to its limits across various terrains.

The interior of the rally car has been stripped out, and features a FIA-certified roll cage, as well as a pair of bucket seats with six-point harnesses. For safety, the 400-volt system will automatically shut down in the event of a collision, while the fire extinguishing system features an electrically non-conductive extinguishing agent.

Opel plans to offer the Mokka GSE Rally to private customers and teams starting in the 2026 rally season, but before that, you’ll get a chance to see the prototype in action at the ELE Rally Eindhoven in the Netherlands, set for May 23-24. This event is part of the ADAC Opel Electric Rally Cup, which will feature the Corsa Rally Electric, another electrified rally contender.

Nissan’s Smallest Hatch Is Back And It’s Unrecognizable

  • The new and fully electric Nissan Micra is a sister model to the Renault 5 E-Tech hatchback.
  • Despite the shared underpinnings, the Micra has a unique exterior design tailored for Europe.
  • The most potent version produces 148 hp and offers 408 km (254 miles) of WLTP range.

Small hatchbacks may seem like they’ve taken a backseat to the SUV craze in Europe, but Nissan isn’t ready to abandon this segment just yet. Enter the sixth generation of the Micra, which has been revamped as an electric vehicle, sharing its bones with the Renault 5 E-Tech. However, the Micra sports its own unique and playful design that aims to stand out in a competitive market.

More: All The New Nissan Models Arriving By 2027, From Sentra To Frontier

Designed at Nissan Design Europe’s London studio with European customers in mind, the new Micra sports some distinctive features. The standout design includes large, circular headlights and taillights, both equipped with body-colored inserts that nod to the 2011 Smart Forspeed Concept. When you lock or unlock the car, the front LEDs perform a little “wink” sequence.

A Nod to SUV Aesthetics, but Still a Hatchback

While the Micra may be compact, it borrows some visual cues from SUVs. Glossy black cladding wraps around the bumpers, profile, and wheel arches, adding a sense of ruggedness to its otherwise small frame. All trim levels come with 18-inch wheels in various designs, giving it a confident, planted look. And for those who love a good color combo, Nissan offers 14 different options, including two-tone combinations with either a black or gray roof.

\\\\\\\\\

Despite its updated features, the new Micra maintains the compact size of its predecessors, measuring in at under 4 meters (157.5 inches) long, with a slightly longer 2.54-meter (100-inch) wheelbase. Like most modern hatchbacks, it is exclusively available in a five-seat configuration.

Interior Features: Familiar Yet Distinct

Inside, the Micra borrows heavily from the Renault 5 E-Tech, with dual 10.1-inch screens and a similar dashboard layout. The main differences come down to Nissan’s branding and a few personalized touche, like the molded outline of Mount Fuji between the front seats. The boot offers a modest 326 liters (11.5 cubic feet) of space, perfect for smaller urban adventures.

The new Micra rides on the AmpR Small architecture (CMF-BEV) and is available in two versions. The entry-level model combines a 121 hp (90 kW / 122 PS) electric motor with a 40 kWh battery pack offering 308 km (191 miles) of WLTP range. The more potent version upgrades to a 148 hp (110 kW / 150 PS) motor and a larger 52 kWh battery, expanding the range to 408 km (254 miles).

The second option is compatible with 100 kW DC charging, allowing the 15-80% charge to be completed in 30 minutes. Both battery packs have Vehicle-to-Load tech for powering external devices and come standard with a heat pump, as well as battery heating and cooling capability.

More: Nissan’s Next Juke Is So Different, You Might Not Recognize It

\\\\\\\\\\\\

Nissan claims the Micra delivers “best-in-class” ride and handling, boasting a low center of gravity, optimized weight (ranging from 1,400 to 1,524 kg / 3,087 to 3,360 lbs), quick steering, and a suspension setup with a multi-link rear axle. Of course, Renault made the same claim about the R5 E-Tech when it launched in 2024, so maybe take that with a pinch of salt.

Pricing and Availability

The Micra is expected to hit European dealers in late 2025, though pricing won’t be confirmed until closer to launch. However, don’t expect it to be cheaper than the Renault 5 E-Tech, which starts at around €25,000. The Micra is positioned as a more premium option in the lineup, and will soon be joined by other electric models like the Juke and the upcoming Leaf crossover.

A New Large Honda Hybrid Is Coming To America After EV Rethink

  • Honda cuts electrification investment from ¥10 trillion ($69 billion) to ¥7 trillion ($48 billion).
  • The focus shifts to hybrids, with 13 new models and a target of 2.2 million sales by 2030.
  • It’s also working on advanced ADAS to enhance the competitiveness of both EVs and HEVs.

As more automakers revise their EV plans in response to the realities of the market, Honda is also adjusting its electrification strategy. President and CEO Toshihiro Mibe recently announced significant changes to the company’s approach, including a sharp reduction in both its ambitious sales targets and, more importantly, its investment in electric vehicles.

More: Honda’s Future EVs Will Let You Pretend You’re Driving An NSX Or S2000 With Simulated Sounds And Shifts

Slower-than-expected EV adoption has been a key factor behind this shift. While Honda still sees electric vehicles as the best long-term path to carbon neutrality by 2050, the pace of adoption has not kept up with predictions. A combination of evolving environmental regulations and shifting trade policies has kept EVs from breaking through at the rate many hoped for.

Adjusted Expectations

Honda now predicts that EVs will make up less than 30% of its global sales by 2030. In response, the company is slashing its planned investment in electrification from ¥10 trillion ($69 billion) to ¥7 trillion ($48 billion) by 2031. Part of this reduction stems from the postponement of a major EV investment project in Canada.

More importantly, Honda is introducing a new mixed production system that can handle both EVs and HEVs, with the added flexibility to shift between different factories. This will be paired with a “resilient supply chain strategy” designed to make adjustments as needed, depending on market fluctuations in different regions.

Next-Generation Hybrids

With demand for hybrids expected to continue growing toward the end of the decade, Honda plans to introduce 13 next-generation HEV models globally between 2027 and 2031. These hybrids will sport the redesigned “H” emblem, which was previously reserved for EVs. The company aims to reach 2.2 million annual HEV sales by 2030, contributing to a broader sales increase beyond the projected 3.6 million units in 2025.

More: 2026 Honda Prelude Coupe Interior Revealed With Civic Vibes

Honda’s two-motor e:HEV hybrid system will also see improvements, offering enhanced efficiency and better packaging. A new all-wheel-drive (AWD) unit will further elevate performance. The next-generation hybrid system will be 30% cheaper to produce than the current version, making it a more cost-effective option for the company.

Big Plans for North America

Specifically for North America, Honda is developing a new hybrid system tailored for larger vehicles, with an emphasis on high performance and towing capabilities. This powertrain will debut in models set to launch in the next few years, including a large SUV. While the model isn’t named, we suspect that it could very well be a replacement for the Pilot.

Sophisticated ADAS

The company is also investing heavily in intelligent technologies like advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). Aiming to enhance the competitiveness of both EVs and HEVs, the next generation of Honda’s ADAS will offer a higher level of autonomy in both city and highway driving. These systems are expected to be launched around 2027 across a wide range of EVs and HEVs in North America and Japan.

Besides its own-developed next-gen ADAS, Honda will also work with Chinese startup Momenta Global Limited to develop systems tailored for all future Hondas that will launch in China.

The Tesla Model Y Has A New Rival From Toyota That’s Half The Price

  • The Toyota bZ5 is a new electric crossover produced by FAW for the Chinese market.
  • It’s equipped with BYD batteries, delivering up to 630 km (392 miles) of CLTC range.
  • Pre-sales have already begun in China, with prices starting at just 130,000 rmb ($18,000).

If you thought Toyota couldn’t produce an affordable EV, think again. Well, at least if it’s made in China and relies on BYD for its batteries. Toyota is slowly catching up with the EV game, and its latest effort is the bZ5, a new electric crossover fastback developed in China. Manufactured by the FAW-Toyota joint venture, it features BYD-sourced battery packs to power its electric drive.

More: Toyota’s New Electric Flagship Sedan Takes A Shot At Tesla Model S

The bZ5 is essentially a rebranded version of last year’s bZ3C, which itself evolved from the bZ Sport Crossover Concept introduced back in 2023. By adopting the bZ5 name, Toyota seems to be aiming to position this new EV above the entry-level bZ3 sedan, but just below the upcoming bZ7 flagship.

Design That’s Familiar, But Still Fresh

The exterior design sticks with what Toyota’s been rolling out lately. That includes the usual hammerhead front end, subtle cladding around the wheel arches, a sloping roofline, and full-width taillights. The bZ5 mixes sedan, fastback, and crossover elements, all riding on 21-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, there is a 15.6-inch touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster mounted close to the windshield, and a floating center console. The front seats can transform into a bed, which comes in handy in combination with the nap mode of the infotainment system.

Other perks include a panoramic sunroof, a 10-speaker JBL audio system, a fragrance dispenser (yes, really), nine airbags, and a full suite of Level 2 ADAS for urban autonomy.

Powertrain and Platform

The Tesla Model Y Has A New Rival From Toyota That’s Half The Price

Measuring 4,780 mm (188.2 inches) long with a wheelbase of 2,880 mm (113.4 inches), the bZ5 shares similar dimensions with many electric crossovers in China, including the Tesla Model Y. The model is built on Toyota’s e-TNGA platform, which underpins the entire bZ lineup.

But unlike its siblings, the bZ5 comes with BYD’s Blade LFP battery packs, offering options with capacities of 65.28 kWh and 73.98 kWh. According to Toyota, range estimates for the CLTC cycle are 550 km (342 miles) and 630 km (392 miles) respectively. Need a quick boost? A 30-80% charge can be completed in just 27 minutes.

More: Toyota’s Cheapest EV Ever Costs $15,000, Gets 10,000 Orders In 60 Minutes

Both battery options are combined with the same fully electric powertrain generating 268 hp (200 kW / 272 PS) and 330 Nm (243.4 lb-ft) of torque.

Affordable, Yet Advanced

The Toyota bZ5 is already available for pre-order in China, with prices starting at 130,000 rmb ($18,000), which is roughly the cost of a Chinese-spec Toyota Corolla Cross. In comparison, the Tesla Model Y starts at 263,500 rmb ($36,500) in the same market, making the bZ5 an attractive (and much more affordable) option for those looking to step into the world of electric crossovers.

Fiat’s Next Big Thing Is This Small Thing Reviving A Classic

  • Fiat has unveiled the Grande Panda 4×4 concept, previewing an AWD production version.
  • The rugged model features all-terrain tires, extra LEDs, a roof rack, and a Bordeaux paint job.
  • It’s equipped with an electrified rear axle, though it’s unclear whether it’s a mild-hybrid or an EV.

The world of small, rugged crossovers is about to get a little more interesting. Fiat is getting ready to give the Grande Panda lineup a new addition, one that gives a nod to the classic Panda 4×4. The automaker unveiled a concept version of this off-road-ready urban crossover, equipped with an electrified rear axle that brings AWD capability to the table.

More: Next-Gen Fiat Panda Coming In 2030, Will Be Sold Alongside Grande Panda

Named the Fiat Grande Panda 4×4 Manifesto, this concept made its debut during the media drive of the Grande Panda Hybrid in Italy. According to Fiat, the vehicle is “the fullest expression of an idea that continues to evolve,” calling it “the foundation of an exciting journey.” This echoes earlier remarks from Fiat CEO Olivier Francois, who confirmed that a 4×4 version of the Grande Panda is currently in development.

Retro Design and Tough Features

The Manifesto stands tall with a few key changes compared to the high-spec trims of the standard Grande Panda. Notable updates include additional plastic cladding along the body, a roof rack equipped with a spare tire, and pixel-style LEDs integrated into both the grille and roof. While Fiat has hinted at more accessories for the production version, these additions already give the concept a proper rugged makeover.

Fiat opted for a unique Bordeaux paint job as a subtle tribute to the original Panda 4×4, which first rolled out in 1983. The exterior also features beige accents, along with retro-inspired 16-inch steel wheels. The same wheel design can be found on the entry-level and RED trims of the Grande Panda, though the finishes differ. For this concept, however, the wheels are wrapped in beefy all-terrain tires, a fitting choice for an off-road-ready vehicle.

Electrified Powertrain for AWD Capability

Fiat’s Next Big Thing Is This Small Thing Reviving A Classic

Beneath its tough exterior, the Manifesto’s pièce de résistance is its “electrified innovative rear axle,” a feature that grants it AWD capabilities. This setup is reminiscent of the 28 hp (21 kW / 29 PS) rear electric motor found on the mild-hybrid Jeep Avenger 4xe and Alfa Romeo Junior Ibrida Q4, suggesting Fiat is tapping into a familiar powertrain architecture.

More: Fiat’s 500 Hybrid Lets You Shift Your Own Gears

Fiat hasn’t yet confirmed whether the electrified rear axle of the concept is paired to the mild-hybrid 1.2-liter engine or whether the front axle is also electrically driven. However, it’s possible that the AWD setup could be compatible with both powertrain options.

While no official launch date has been announced, a production version of the Grande Panda 4×4 could arrive in European dealerships sometime in 2026.

VW Promises A Whole Family Of ‘Mind-Blowing’ GTIs, But There’s A Catch

  • VW CEO Thomas Schafer has promised a “whole group” of upcoming GTI models.
  • The new GTI models will be based on VW’s electric lineup and “mind-blowing” to drive.
  • Schafer has tested prototypes of the electric Golf GTI, with the ID.2 GTI arriving first.

Nearly fifty years ago, Volkswagen changed the hatchback world forever with the Golf GTI. The “GTI” moniker stood for Grand Touring Injection, a nod to the four-cylinder engine’s fuel injection system at a time when carburetors still ruled the roads. A lot has changed since then, but one thing remained constant: GTIs were powered by gas. Well, it looks like that’s about to change.

Also: No More IDs, VW’s EVs Will Get Real Names

Volkswagen is now working on the next era for the GTI sub-brand, one that will see the performance label expanding into a variety of segments with new models. However, unlike what we’re used to, all future GTI offerings will feature fully electric powertrains, with VW promising to deliver a “mind-blowing” driving experience.

The company has already confirmed the production version of the ID.2 GTI, with plans to follow it up with the next-generation Golf GTI. But those two won’t be the only GTI-branded models. According to Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schafer, these electric hot hatches will “start a whole group of GTIs,” hinting at even more electric performance models on the horizon.

The Electric GTI Revolution

While Schafer didn’t dive into specifics, there have been rumors about an ID.3 GTI, along with the possibility of an entry-level ID.1 GTI, assuming there’s enough demand for the slightly larger ID.2 GTI, which is set to arrive first. And let’s not forget about the potential for performance versions of VW’s electric SUVs, which have already proven their chops with the GTX models.

Schafer, speaking with Autocar, expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the electric Golf GTI’s development. While the current gasoline-powered version of the hot hatch is expected to run “very well into the end of this decade,” Volkswagen is already testing prototypes of its fully electric successor, which will be built on the new SSP platform.

VW Promises A Whole Family Of ‘Mind-Blowing’ GTIs, But There’s A Catch
The concept version of the upcoming ID.2 GTI (above) and our rendering of a potential ID.1 GTI (below).
VW Promises A Whole Family Of ‘Mind-Blowing’ GTIs, But There’s A Catch

Schafer, who’s taken some GTI prototypes for a spin, says that an electric Golf can still offer an exciting, authentic experience. He describes the new setup as “mind-blowing,” promising that the electric hot hatch will be “a monster car.”

He also emphasized that the aim isn’t just to make it fast, as VW wants to make sure the electric GTI models feel distinct from their standard counterparts. Expect upgrades in sound and handling, along with the inevitable performance improvements.

More: We Drove The 2025 VW Tiguan And It’s Not What You Expect, But It’s What You Need

This lines up with comments from VW’s technical boss, Kai Grunitz, who noted that electric GTIs will be about more than just raw power. The focus, he says, will be on “drivability,” ensuring that these models aren’t just fast, but fun.

A 2026 Debut?

While Volkswagen hasn’t confirmed a debut date for the first electric GTI, it could arrive in 2026, which would coincide with the 50th anniversary of the original Golf GTI. With the ID.2 (or whatever VW decides to name it) set for release next year, it’s possible the first electric GTI will be unveiled next summer during the GTI festival in Wolfsburg. Looks like the future of hot hatches might be electrifying, after all.

This Mustang GTD Rival Caught The Eye Of Stellantis Design Chief

  • The [DODGE] muscle car is a thesis project by university student John Carioti.
  • Ralph Gilles, Stellantis’ Chief Design Officer, shared the concept on Instagram.
  • The EV’s bold design makes it a potential competitor to the Ford Mustang GTD.

It’s not every day a Stellantis design chief gives your senior thesis a shoutout on social media, but that’s exactly what happened to John Carioti. While working on his senior project at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Carioti created a stunning Dodge muscle car that caught the eye of none other than Ralph Gilles, Stellantis’ Chief Design Officer.

Gilles, who oversees the styling for brands like Jeep, Ram, Dodge, Chrysler, and Maserati, isn’t exactly a rookie when it comes to spotting standout concepts. The Stellantis exec shared Carioti’s work on Instagram, captioning the post “Once again @ccs_detroit Seniors are Fire! ##.” It’s the kind of exposure that most young designers can only dream of, and it’s safe to assume it can do wonders for Carioti’s career.

More: This Is How America’s Teens Imagine Chrysler’s Future

The [DODGE] project, which was part of an exhibition for the end of the academic year, looks like a worthy competitor to the Ford Mustang GTD,thanks to its oversized aero enhancements. It takes design cues from the Charger Daytona but features a smaller footprint, a fastback tail, and more aggressive proportions.

The front end is a showstopper. A massive chin spoiler leads the way, complemented by full-width LED headlights that flank a narrow pass-through grille. Air is directed through the grille and into a hollow vent on the hood. Given the Fratzog logos, it’s obviously designed for a fully electric powertrain. But hey, if your imagination drifts toward a supercharged Hemi V8 instead, no one’s going to judge you for it.

\\\\\\\\\\\\

John Carioti / Instagram

The profile is just as striking, with muscular fenders, sharp creases on the doors, and large alloy wheels. At the back, the design doesn’t disappoint. The LED bar under the active rear spoiler adds an extra layer of visual drama, and the rear deck does away with the windscreen, following the same trend popularized by brands like Polestar and Avatr. Carioti has also presented a version with a fixed rear wing, which perfectly complements the rear diffuser.

More: Forget The C9, This Corvette Concept Reclaims Retro Glory

While Dodge is struggling to sell the electric Charger Daytona and is leaning heavily on the upcoming ICE-powered Charger SixPack, Carioti’s design offers a glimpse into what the future of muscle cars could look like. Sure, the public might not be fully ready for electric muscle cars just yet, but that’s no reason to disregard his vision.

As with most senior thesis projects, the [DODGE] is purely a design exercise with no plans for production. However, it’s a concept that could easily be adapted to house a Hemi V8, tapping into the more traditional, hardcore muscle car fanbase.

Carioti expressed his gratitude to Gilles for the shoutout, and we sincerely hope this marks the beginning of a successful career. With talent like his, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him helping to shape the future of muscle cars (well, yes, and SUVs, it goes with the territory these days…) at a Stellantis design studio.

No More IDs, VW’s EVs Will Get Real Names

  • Future VW EVs will drop the ID prefix and adopt more traditional names.
  • The announcement was made by VW Brand Board Member Martin Sander.
  • The change will start with the production version of the ID. 2all in 2026.

The German auto industry seems to be in the midst of an identity crisis. No, really. Mercedes has decided to ditch its EQ label for its EVs, BMW’s “i” series is about as consistent as a toddler on a sugar high, and Audi’s odd/even naming plan was clearly just a suggestion. Now, it’s Volkswagen’s turn to throw its own wrench into the mix and rethink its entire naming strategy.

In an effort to simplify its lineup and make it more accessible, Volkswagen is planning to phase out the “ID” prefix that’s become synonymous with its electric vehicles. Starting as soon as 2026, the company intends to replace this alphanumeric branding with more traditional car names. Though details are still scarce, the change is meant to address growing confusion in the market around these designations.

The ID sub-brand was launched in 2017 with the concept version of the ID.3 hatchback, which later became the first production model in 2019. Over the years, VW expanded its offerings, introducing the ID.4, ID.5, and ID.6 SUVs (the latter available exclusively in China), the ID.7 sedan, and the ID. Buzz minivan. The brand had plans to further expand the ID lineup with the ID.1 city car and the ID.2 supermini by 2027, but it seems the game plan is now changing.

Shifting to Familiar Names

Martin Sander, a member of Volkswagen’s Board of Management responsible for Sales, Marketing, and After Sales, revealed during an interview with Auto und Wirtschaft that the company intends to return to using conventional names for its EVs. “The cars will get proper names again,” he said. “This will become apparent when we launch new models – neither the ID. 2all nor the ID. Every1 concepts will carry these names in production.”

Although Sander did not go into detail, Volkswagen has previously indicated that established nameplates might make their way into the EV world. For instance, the upcoming ID.2, set for launch in 2026, could adopt the Polo name, celebrating the model’s 50th anniversary this year. Meanwhile, the ID.1, expected in 2027, could take inspiration from previous names like Lupo, Fox, or Up!, or even receive an entirely new name.

No More IDs, VW’s EVs Will Get Real Names

New Names, New Beginnings

Earlier this year, Kai Grünitz, Volkswagen’s Board Member for Technical Development, mentioned that starting in 2026, the ID models will undergo a significant facelift. This would be an ideal time for Volkswagen to start phasing in the new names for its existing EV models.

Volkswagen is also working on an electric version of the Golf, which is set to arrive toward the end of the decade, along with an electric T-Roc SUV. There’s a good chance that familiar nameplates like Passat and Tiguan will eventually be used for future electric vehicles. The challenge for Volkswagen, however, will be distinguishing the EV models from their internal combustion counterparts, which will remain in production for a few more years.

Big Sales Targets For EVs

When discussing Volkswagen’s EV sales, Sander expressed confidence, saying, “We are very satisfied with the demand. We have a high order backlog for the ID.3, and we’re already selling more ID.7s in Europe than Passats.” He also highlighted the ID. Buzz, noting that it “plays an incredibly important role for the brand, especially given the significant hype surrounding it in the U.S.”

More: VW’s 1 Millionth EV Is Here, But It’s Crushing Them

Sander also highlighted Volkswagen’s ambitious sales targets, particularly for the upcoming ID. 2all, which is expected to launch in Europe at a starting price of €25,000 ($27,900). “With the production version of the ID. 2all, we are entering a completely different price range,” he said.

The ID. Every1, scheduled for 2027, is projected to start at an even more affordable €20,000 ($22,300). Thanks to falling battery costs and cost-cutting measures, this price point is within reach. “Everything regarding costs is being scrutinized,” Sander emphasized, noting that Volkswagen will leverage new production methods to ensure the vehicle is profitable from the start.

No More IDs, VW’s EVs Will Get Real Names
The VW ID. Every1 concept.

According to Sander, the target price of the urban EV that will be produced in Portugal will be made possible thanks to the declining cost of batteries, and extensive cost-cutting measures: “Everything regarding costs is being scrutinized. We have to leave no stone unturned and will use new production methods. Everything we change now will bring us to the point where the car will be profitable. The entire company will benefit from what we learn from this vehicle. You can’t build a project like this on hope – instead, we rely on solid success figures and plans.”

Sander also remains confident that electric vehicles will outpace internal combustion engines, stating that VW is “convinced that electromobility will prevail because electric cars are the better product”.

What About China?

Finally, the VW Board Member also touched on the competitive landscape in China, where Volkswagen’s EVs, like the ID.7, are facing pressure from lower-priced competitors. Despite the tough market conditions, the company is focused on long-term growth. “We are not buying market share,” Sander said, “but investing in our long-term strategic goals.”

“The electric car market in China is extremely competitive on price; even new models are sometimes launched by competitors with deep discounts,” he told the publication. “This also presents a challenge for the ID.7, which has been so successful in other markets. However, in this difficult environment, we are not focusing on short-term market success, but rather pursuing a sustainable growth plan.”

Volkswagen aims to strengthen its position in China starting in 2026 with a new generation of market-specific electric cars. “We are the clear market leader in China in the still highly profitable segment of vehicles with combustion engines,” Sander added. As part of its strategy, Volkswagen is gradually hybridizing its combustion engine portfolio, positioning itself to lead the transition to electrified vehicles in the region.

Jeep Shows New Compass In The Real World

  • Jeep has shared new photos of the new Compass in lime green with 20-inch alloy wheels.
  • The set celebrates Jeep’s sponsorship of Juventus F.C. that has been renewed for three years.
  • The Compass will enter production in late 2025, offering mild-hybrid, PHEV, and EV options.

The all-new Compass has officially made its European debut, though the initial press images offered only select glimpses of the new SUV in the studio. Thankfully, while renewing its sponsorship deal with Juventus F.C., Jeep pulled back the curtain with some fresh, more revealing shots of the car.

More: Which New Stellantis Compact SUV Would You Actually Buy?

This is the fully electric version of the all-new Compass shown in a striking lime green with a black roof – the same livery used in its original presentation. It adopts a boxier design compared to its predecessor with more muscular fenders, high-tech LEDs, and sharper lines on the front and rear bumpers.

This particular trim rides on 20-inch alloy wheels, which give it a more aggressive stance. The Willy’s Jeep graphic on the hub caps suggests it could be a launch edition with the usual Easter eggs. Another one we spotted is a small Willy’s face mounted on the front bumper intake. Speaking of intakes, they appear to be largely blocked in the electric variant, as is the seven-slot grille.

Jeep Shows New Compass In The Real World

The new design is combined with fresh underpinnings, as the Compass now rides on the STLA Medium architecture. This is compatible with various powertrain options including mild- and plug-in hybrid, as well as fully electric.

The base model produces 145 hp from a mild-hybrid 1.2-liter four, while the more potent 1.6-liter plug-in hybrid powertrain generates a combined 195 hp. Finally, the electric variants start at 213 hp and go all the way up to 375 hp in flagship AWD form.

Production of the new Compass will start in late 2025 in Italy, followed by its market launch in European markets. As for North America, the availability of the SUV remains uncertain due to the tariffs.

Jeep Loves Juventus

Jeep has also announced its continued partnership with Juventus, serving as the Official Sponsor for the next three seasons. After a one-year hiatus, the Jeep logo will return to the jerseys of both men’s and women’s teams, this time joined by a “Visit Detroit” script.

GMC Just Made The 2026 Hummer EV Crabbier Than Ever

  • The 2026 GMC Hummer EV lineup includes a new Carbon Fiber Edition.
  • The fastest-ever Hummer accelerates from 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds.
  • The EV also gains a new King Crab mode for improved maneuverability.

Even the most excessive EV on the market is still getting upgrades. For the 2026 model year, the GMC Hummer EV sees a series of small updates aimed at enhancing performance, off-road functionality, and overall refinement. A few of the improvements will even be offered retroactively to current owners, thanks to over-the-air updates.

Carbon Fiber Edition For Extreme Acceleration

Among the changes, the limited-run Carbon Fiber Edition stands out. Available for both Pickup and SUV versions, this trim builds on the top-tier 3X model but pushes performance even further. The truck version now launches from 0 to 60 mph (0–97 km/h) in just 2.8 seconds, down slightly from the already eye-widening “approximately 3 seconds” claimed by the outgoing model.

More: This Hummer EV Lost $45K Without Ever Touching a Driveway

According to GMC, this extra boost is the result of refined propulsion calibration, updated software, and some hardware tweaks. The updated 3X also comes with a 24-module battery pack delivering 1,160 hp (865 kW / 1,176 PS), up from the previous 1,000 hp (746 kW / 1,014 PS).

Visually, the Carbon Fiber Edition gets 22-inch carbon fiber wheels, carbon accents on the mirror caps and skid plates, and an exclusive matte Magnus Gray exterior paired with black emblems. Inside, it features a Velocity Ember interior theme. GMC doesn’t mention any actual weight savings from the carbon fiber bits, which serve more aesthetic than functional purposes

\\\\\\\\\

Subtle Updates, Smarter Tech

Outside of the special edition, the 2026 Hummer lineup doesn’t get major styling revisions. However, two new exterior color options called Coastal Dune and Auburn Matte, have been added, along with new interior themes: Granite Drift and Stealth Eclipse.

The tech front gets a more noticeable upgrade. The 13.4-inch infotainment screen now supports a customizable split-view layout, giving drivers quicker access to key data. The Super Cruise driver assistance system has also been updated, though details on those improvements are still limited

King Crab Mode For Everyone

Another highlight of the 2026 MY is the addition of the King Crab mode. This feature is standard in the 2X and 3X trims and will be available to all Hummer EV Pickup and SUV owners later this year through an over-the-air update. According to the company, the King Crab mode makes the rear wheels turn “significantly faster” than the front wheels, improving maneuverability in tight spaces and enhancing the rock crawling abilities of the Hummer.

Review: The 1,000 HP GMC Hummer EV Pickup Is Wonderfully Ridiculous

GMC engineers have also optimized the damper tuning of the EV, promising an improved ride quality. Furthermore, all versions of the Hummer are now compatible with bidirectional charging, meaning they can charge another vehicle, or power your entire home during a blackout.

Production of the 2026 GMC Hummer EV Pickup and SUV will take place at GM’s Factory ZERO Assembly Center in Michigan. The updated models are expected to hit U.S. dealerships later this year, with pricing and range details to be announced closer to launch, likely by late summer 2025.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Returns But It’ll Be As Japanese As A Croissant

  • Mitsubishi has unveiled a teaser for a fully electric SUV, set to carry the Eclipse Cross name.
  • The EV will be produced in Europe by Renault, sharing a platform with the Scenic E-Tech.
  • The future of the ICE-powered Eclipse Cross in Japan and North America is unclear.

Mitsubishi is preparing to launch a new fully electric SUV designed specifically for the European market, and, surprise, it’s bringing back the Eclipse Cross name. Set to debut in September ahead of its 2025 release, this electric model will be based on Renault Scenic E-Tech and marks the next step in the growing collaboration between the two brands in Europe.

More: Mitsubishi Dusts Off Grandis Nameplate For Rebadged Renault Symbioz

The new Eclipse Cross will join a roster of Renault-derived electrified models, including the Colt (based on the Clio), the ASX (built on the Captur), and the Grandis (which is actually a rebadged Renault Symbioz). Of course, Mitsubishi is also working on its own projects, like the self-developed Outlander SUV.

A Familiar Design with Subtle Tweaks

So far, the only official glimpse of the new Eclipse Cross shows us a few design details, such as the wheels, grille patterns, flush door handles, and some badges on the tailgate. Earlier teasers hinted at a unique lighting signature to set it apart from its Renault twin. The EV was crafted with input from Mitsubishi’s design team in Germany, incorporating the next evolution of the brand’s Dynamic Shield front-end design.

As for the cabin, Mitsubishi promises a spacious and versatile setup that’s perfect for families. Based on the Renault Scenic, expect a two-row, five-seat configuration with a 545-liter (19.2 cubic feet) boot. The interior will also feature Google built-in infotainment and an advanced suite of driver assistance systems (ADAS).

Powertrains and Variants: What to Expect

Initially, the next Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross will launch with a long-range variant, with a mid-range version slated to follow in 2026. These versions will likely mirror the specifications of the Renault Scenic E-Tech, which offers 60 kWh and 87 kWh battery options. Powertrains will include a single-motor setup with 168 hp (125 kW / 170 PS) and a dual-motor version with 215 hp (160 kW / 218 PS).

More: Mitsubishi Refuses To Let The Mirage Die

The new model will compete in the compact SUV segment (C-SUV), which is the largest in Europe. Production will be carried over by Renault at the Ampere Electricity facility in Douai, France, right next to the Scenic E-Tech.

The North American Future and a Lingering Question

Mitsubishi has also confirmed it will launch another electric crossover for North America in the summer of 2026. This will be based on the upcoming Nissan Leaf and will be slightly smaller than the European Eclipse Cross.

The original Eclipse Cross, which has been around since 2017, received a mid-cycle refresh in 2020. However, with the internal combustion engine version nearing the end of its life cycle, the fate of the nameplate outside of Europe is still up in the air.

Nissan Turns A New Leaf With Its Next EV

  • One of our readers spotted two prototypes of the Nissan Leaf during testing.
  • The EV will morph into a crossover with a sloping roofline and modern LEDs.
  • It will be offered exclusively in FWD, with a range exceeding 300 miles (482 km).

It’s been a rough year for Nissan. The company’s in a bit of a financial bind, but that hasn’t stopped them from pushing out new models. Recently, Carscoops reader Peter spotted two camouflaged crossovers in the Czech Republic, which appear to be prototypes of the upcoming Leaf.

The testers were seen earlier this month in Prague, wrapped in camouflage from top to bottom. At first glance, the headlight graphics had us momentarily scratching our heads, but after a closer look, we realized it was just black tape doing its best to confuse us. The round emblem on the covered grille and the futuristic, four-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels were the real clues that tipped us off; it’s a Nissan, and more specifically, the new Leaf.

More: Nissan’s New EV Embraces Its MINI Side

Nissan has already teased the exterior design of the new Leaf, so it’s easy to confirm the similarities. The electric model has already been spotted in spy shots across Europe and the US, though it’s been wearing different camouflage patterns each time.

A Crossover Twist for the Leaf

The third generation of the Nissan Leaf breaks away from the hatchback silhouette of its predecessors, adopting a crossover body with a sloping roofline. The Japanese brand clearly hopes this shift will make the Leaf more appealing to a wider audience. And if the cabin’s technology is as cutting-edge as expected, this could be a smart move. In fact, our reader managed to snap a photo of the covered dashboard, revealing hints of a digital cockpit.

The new Leaf will sit on Nissan’s AmpR Medium platform, which is just a rebranded version of the CMF-EV architecture already found under the Nissan Ariya, the Renault Megane E-Tech, and the Renault Scenic E-Tech. On top of that, it’s also confirmed that Mitsubishi will get its own version of the Lead in 2026.

What We Know So Far

The next generation Nissan’s EV will come with a front-mounted electric motor – sorry, no dual-motor AWD setup here like you get with the slightly larger Ariya. It’s expected to offer more than 300 miles (482 km) of range, a significant boost from the current model. Plus, the new Leaf will be the first Nissan to sport a NACS charging port, meaning it will have access to Tesla’s Supercharger network, a move that should keep owners a little less anxious on long road trips.

Nissan has confirmed the Leaf will be available in North America, Europe, Japan, and Australia. But unfortunately, we still don’t have a concrete debut date, though it could very well happen later this year.

Many thanks to Peter R. for the photos!

Ford Thinks A Special Edition Is The Right Way To Honor A Notorious Sports Moment

  • This Ford Capri one-off is a tribute to Eric Cantona, also known as “King Eric”.
  • Cantona is widely considered one of the greatest Manchester United players.
  • The former athlete is also known for kicking a spectator during an away game.

Eric Cantona, part soccer god, part walking headline, has never been one to shy away from making a scene. The man who once famously launched a “kung fu kick” into an opposing football fan’s chest after he hurled abuse at him, is now getting a tribute from Ford, in the form of a one-off electric Capri. And if that doesn’t scream “Cantona,” we’re not sure what does.

That said, we can’t help but wonder if it’s really a great idea for a company to celebrate a physical assault, no matter how legendary, even under the guise of a cheeky nod. But hey, who needs restraint when there’s branding to be done, right?

More: Ford’s Capri Has Regenerated Almost As Many Times As Dr Who

Cantona, who teamed up with Ford to relaunch the Capri, is a football legend, widely hailed as one of the best to don Manchester United’s red, with four Premier League titles in five years to back up the claim. Not bad for a guy who could get as much attention for his temper as he did for his talent.

Beyond his undeniable talent on the field, “King Eric” is also remembered for his explosive attitude, which got him into some serious trouble in 1995. During an away match, he launched a kick – and a punch- at a fan from the opposing team. As a result, Cantona faced fines, community service, and a lengthy ban from the sport. But of course, he made his comeback, bagging more titles before retiring early in 1997 at the ripe age of 30.

As a nod to this high-profile incident, the headrests of the one-off Capri feature the outline of Cantona’s figure doing the infamous “kung fu kick”. Another bespoke feature is the polished Plexiglass insert on the center console with a backlit script that reads: “When a goat follows his hero in his car, it’s because the ruler on the racetrack returns. The Legend is back.”

\\\\\\
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

The interior of the EV features the Feeltek Luxury Grain trim, contrasting with stripes, accents, and stitching in Signal Orange. The same color has been applied to the exterior, as a reference to the Mark III Capri from the 70s. The striking color is combined with black racing stripes and the number 7 on the profile, mirroring Cantona’s shirt number at Manchester United.

Other standout features include a bespoke rear spoiler, 21-inch alloy wheels, a 3D crown badge on the D-pillars, and Cantona’s signature displayed on the front fenders, right next to the Ford Design logo. Underneath, however, it’s business as usual, as the one-off is based on the Capri RWD Extended Range trim, with no other changes to speak of.

The special Capri was crafted by a handpicked team of Ford designers, who no doubt spent a fair amount of time brainstorming with Cantona himself. The final product was then unveiled to the man of the hour in a special ceremony at Ford France’s headquarters

Stellantis Brand Teases Hot SUV With Electric Power

  • Opel’s GSE sub-brand is transitioning from hybrids to fully electric performance vehicles.
  • The Mokka GSE will debut in 2025, featuring sportier styling and upgraded chassis setup.
  • The small SUV could inherit a more powerful electric motor from the Abarth 600e.

Opel has announced that its GSE sub-brand for performance models will go fully electric, abandoning its previous route of plug-in hybrid powertrains. The first model of this new era will be the Mokka GSE, which is expected to debut later this year.

More: Which New Stellantis Compact SUV Would You Actually Buy?

Introduced in 2022, Opel and Vauxhall’s GSE performance sub-brand initially included electrified models with plug-in hybrid powertrains. The Astra hatchback, Astra Sports Tourer estate, and Grandland SUV all received GSE versions, featuring a sharper chassis setup and more dynamic performance. However, starting this year, the GSE name will be rebranded with a fresh logo and applied exclusively to fully electric vehicles.

What Does GSE Really Stand For?

According to Opel, G stands for Grand, German engineering, goosebumps, great grip and G-forces, S stands for Sport, speed, sweat and sliding through S-curves, while E stands for Electric, excitement, exhilaration and euphoria. German humor at its finest.

The GSE models will sport a more aggressive look and feature an upgraded chassis setup that aims to “directly integrate the driver” and offer “exciting driving pleasure.” According to the company, these performance EVs are designed to be “stable when braking, cornering, and at high speeds on the Autobahn.” So, don’t expect any track-focused beasts, it’s more about sharp handling on real-world roads.

Details about the electric powertrains haven’t been shared yet, so it’s unclear whether there will be significant improvements in that area.

The Mokka GSE: A Sneak Peek

\\\\\\\\\

The Mokka will be the first model to wear the GSE badge, with a market launch scheduled for 2025. The small SUV is expected to follow a similar performance path as the Abarth 600e and Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce, producing up to 278 horsepower (207 kW / 280 PS) from a single electric motor mounted on the front axle.

A teaser image shows the Mokka GSE will likely feature special decals, along with redesigned bumpers, larger alloy wheels, and brake calipers finished in a striking yellow. Note that the current generation Mokka was introduced in 2020 and received a mild facelift in 2024.

More: Facelifted 2025 Opel Mokka Gets New Tech But Fewer Buttons

Judging from recent spy shots, the Grandland is also expected to gain the GSE moniker, with similar styling and chassis upgrades.

Opel has also launched an “OMG! GSE” campaign, designed to communicate the feeling of driving one of their new electric performance models for the first time. CEO Florian Huettl stated: “The GSE sub-brand stands for particularly dynamic, exhilarating, and emotional Opel models. In 2025, we will take the next important step. The new GSE models will be fully electric. This demonstrates how powerful, exciting, and inspiring battery-electric mobility can be.”

Toyota Kills bZ4X To Welcome New bZ

  • The 2026 Toyota bZ now offers up to 338 hp, significantly increasing power output.
  • The refreshed EV includes dual wireless charging pads and relocated controls.
  • With a new NACS charging port, the bZ can now access Tesla’s Supercharger network.

After making its debut in Europe, the updated Toyota bZ4x is finally hitting American shores, but not as we remember it. You see, while the European model retains the original name, the North American version will now simply be called the Toyota bZ. And this isn’t just a rebranding, as there are notable upgrades in styling, technology, and performance.

Sharper Looks and Subtle Design Tweaks

Starting with the design, the outgoing bZ4x already had Toyota’s “hammerhead” front end, but the new bZ steps it up with sharper LED headlights and more aggressive bumper intakes. These tweaks are complemented by fresh alloy wheel designs, available in 18- or 20-inch sizes, giving the crossover a more refined and polished appearance.

More: The World’s Biggest Carmaker Just Warned Of A Tremendously Bad Year Ahead

The rest of the exterior remains largely unchanged, but now the fenders are available with a body-color finish, giving a noticeable update to the overall design of the 184.6-inch (4,690 mm) long crossover. That said, body-colored fenders are only offered with the Wind Chill Pearl, Heavy Metal, and Black exterior colors, so your options are somewhat limited.

Tech and Comfort Inside

Inside, the dashboard sees a refresh with a larger 14-inch infotainment touchscreen now standard across the range, paired with dual wireless chargers and customizable 64-color ambient lighting. Toyota has also introduced paddle shifters behind the steering wheel, giving drivers the ability to adjust the level of regenerative braking.

More Power And Range

While the exterior and interior changes are relatively mild, the real action is happening under the hood. The bZ still rides on Toyota’s e-TNGA platform, but engineers have made significant improvements to both the powertrain and battery options.

More: America’s 2026 Corolla Cross Looks Sharper But It’s Missing Something

The dual electric motors in the AWD version deliver a combined 338 hp (252 kW / 343 PS), while the single motor in the FWD version produces 221 hp (165 kW / 224 PS). By comparison, the outgoing bZ4x offered 215 hp (160 kW / 218 PS) in the AWD version and 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS) in the FWD. Like its predecessor, the AWD Toyota bZ comes equipped with the X-Mode function, enhancing grip on slippery surfaces.

More importantly, the Toyota bZ offers a 25% increase in driving range over the bZ4x, with an estimated 314 miles (505 km) between charges. This boost is thanks to a slightly larger 74.7 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, available with both FWD and AWD powertrains. There will also be a base FWD model featuring a smaller 57.7 kWh battery pack, offering a still-impressive 236 miles (380 km) of range.

\\\\\

Like its recently updated Subaru Solterra twin, the 2026 Toyota bZ is compatible with the North American Charging System (NACS), giving drivers access to the Tesla Supercharger network. Toyota claims the battery can charge from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes when plugged into a fast DC charger, and it also features a new battery preconditioning function for more efficient charging.

Availability

The 2026 Toyota bZ is expected to land in U.S. dealerships in the second half of the year. The lineup will feature the XLE and Limited trims in both FWD and AWD configurations, with two battery options available. Pricing will be revealed closer to the release date.

Currently, the Toyota bZ remains the company’s sole EV offering in North America, standing alone among a sea of gas, hybrid, and PHEV models. But that won’t last long. Toyota plans to unveil its own version of the Subaru Trailseeker in the near future, expanding its EV lineup with a larger and more spacious crossover/SUV.

This Is Where Supercars And Exotics Meet Their Maker

  • Photographer Larry Chen toured Dubai’s vast junkyards, revealing a trove of wrecked supercars.
  • Among the finds was a nearly new, but damaged Lotus Eletre, likely waiting to be dismantled.
  • The junkyard also included exotic models from Ferrari, Porsche, McLaren, and Rolls-Royce.

The Middle East is home to an impressive array of supercars and exotic vehicles, which, unsurprisingly, sometimes meet unfortunate fates. These damaged cars often end up in junkyards, where they are dismantled for spare parts. Hagerty recently explored some of the vast automotive graveyards of Dubai and unearthed a few noteworthy discoveries, most notably, a wrecked example of the brand-new Lotus Eletre.

More: This Japanese Shop Is The World’s Top Destination For Restoring Nissan GT-Rs

Lotus introduced its first fully electric SUV, the Eletre, in 2022, though deliveries didn’t officially begin until 2024. The example found in the junkyard doesn’t appear to have any obvious cosmetic damage, so those shiny yellow body panels might still be good for salvage. However, the air suspension has failed, causing the car to sit lower than usual, and the door handles are popped out, likely due to some internal issues.

While the specific details of the Lotus Eletre’s condition are unclear, it’s possible that it was involved in one of the flash floods reported in the refion, which could easily spell the end for any car, especially one with so much advanced electronics inside. Depending on how high the water reached, the electronics could be toast, and the cabin could have taken on some serious damage.

An Unexpected Collection of Exotics

This yellow Eletre is just one of many sporty and luxury vehicles that keep piling up in Dubai’s junkyards. Well-known automotive photographer Larry Chen, based in Los Angeles, recently toured one of these vast yards, showcasing a variety of damaged vehicles from brands like Bentley, Rolls-Royce, McLaren, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Aston Martin, and Maserati.

According to Chen, it was likely one of the most colorful junkyards he’s ever visited, thanks to the eye-catching color palettes found in high-end cars.

The video, shared on Hagerty’s YouTube channe, offers a closer look at the incredible variety of vehicles and their varying degrees of damage. As Chen pointed out, the junkyard is well-organized, with specific rooms dedicated to various car parts.

That’s good news for anyone hoping to salvage some components, because, as he noted, some parts can be eye-wateringly expensive. A set of carbon ceramic brakes, for example, could cost up to $50k when purchased new. The same applies for body panels, accessories, and mechanical components from high-end cars like the V12-powered Ferrari 812 Superfast.

More: LA Junkyard Hides Treasure Trove Of Million-Dollar Classics Left To Rot

A nearby junkyard also focuses on American muscle cars, from brands like Ford, Chevrolet, and Dodge, providing spare parts to meet the demand in that market.

Overall, Chen was impressed by the range of enthusiast vehicles found in the junkyard, a rare sight in many US-based yards. These types of cars, often worth far more than a standard junkyard find, tell an interesting story of how some of the world’s most coveted machines can end up discarded. You can watch the full 30-minute video of Chen’s tour above.

The Least Scary Police Car Ever? You Can Thank DEI (But Not That One)

  • A group of ten Fiat 500e models has joined the Greek police force in Athens..
  • The electric hatch sports a police livery, strobe lights, and a 117 hp motor.
  • The small EV has a rear suicide door on one side for easier access to the backseat.

Over the years, police forces have adopted vehicles from nearly every segment imaginable. While some divisions require fast pursuit cars, others need smaller, more nimble vehicles to maneuver through busy urban areas. The Greek police recently received 10 fully electric Fiat 500e units, now patrolling the narrow streets of Athens.

These EVs were gifted to the Greek police by DEI (Public Electric Power Corporation), which, despite sharing its name with the buzzword-heavy acronym for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, is actually just about ensuring your car stays charged, not that it’s inclusive of all power sources. Along with the cars, DEI also threw in 36 charging stations, proving they’re really invested in making sure the only thing running low in this partnership is the battery.

Naturally, the Fiat 500e now sports the classic Greek police livery, complete with iridescent blue decals on its white body and strobe lights atop the roof. The headlight graphics and hubcaps hint that this is the base-spec model, not the fully-loaded La Prima trim.

What is interesting, is that the procurement department chose the Fiat 500e 3+1 bodystyle, which features an additional rear-hinged door on the passenger side. While Fiat initially designed this asymmetrical layout for easier access to the backseat for young families, in this case, it may prove more useful for transporting suspects, provided they can squeeze into the tiny Fiat, of course.

The Least Scary Police Car Ever? You Can Thank DEI (But Not That One)

The 500e police cars are equipped with the standard electric motor, delivering 117 horsepower (87 kW / 118 PS) and 220 Nm (162 lb-ft) of torque. This setup allows the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint in 9 seconds, which should be more than adequate for urban patrols. If performance were the top priority, however, the fleet might have included at least one Abarth 500e.

More importantly, the 42 kWh battery pack offers a WLTP range of 321 km (199 miles) between charges, or up to 460 km (286 miles) in urban environments. In our review of the 500e, we noticed that real-life range is closer to 260 km (162 miles), but even this will be more than enough for patrolling the city center of the Greek capital.

Not the Slowest Greek Police Car

Surprisingly, the Fiat 500e isn’t the smallest or slowest vehicle in the Greek police fleet. That dubious honor goes to the Citroen Ami, a heavy quadricycle that’s been cycling patrolling the streets of Chalki Island since late 2021, as part of a sustainable mobility initiative.

Beyond the electric vehicles, Greek police officers have access to a broad range of cars, from the Seat Leon and Hyundai i30 to the Nissan Qashqai, Kia Sportage, and Peugeot 308. They also have a variety of larger vehicles, including the Nissan Navara and Skoda Octavia.

Recent additions to the police fleet with a performance-focused character include the Hyundai i30 N and Cupra Leon VZ hot hatches, designed for performing highway pursuits and tackling illegal street racing.

Despite its role as the electric flagship for Fiat, the 500e has not been the sales success that Stellantis had hoped for. As a result, Fiat has shifted focus, moving away from an all-EV lineup and introducing a mild-hybrid version, the 500 Ibrida, which is expected to debut later this year. Additionally, Fiat has confirmed that a new generation of the 500 will arrive in 2032, with production set to take place at their Mirafiori plant in Italy.

Cybertruck Flips Over After Alleged Road Rage Attack

  • A Cybertruck flipped after allegedly being hit by a Ram pickup driver on a California highway.
  • The EV’s cameras recorded the entire incident, reportedly helping police charge the driver.
  • The Tesla driver avoided serious injury, and the totaled Cybertruck was later listed on Copart.

A Cybertruck driver recently found himself in a terrifying situation after what he claims was an aggressive move by another motorist on a California highway ended with his truck upside down. The incident occurred in broad daylight near Ukiah, and the entire event was captured by the Tesla’s onboard cameras.

The footage, later shared on YouTube by the Wham Baam Teslacam channel, shows how the crash unfolded. A black Ram 1500 overtakes the Cybertruck, then abruptly cuts into the right lane just ahead of it. Moments later, the Ram driver taps the brakes, prompting the Cybertruck driver to move left in an attempt to pass. That’s when things take a turn – literally.

The Ram swerves into the Tesla’s path, pulling off what appears to be an unintentional PIT maneuver that forces the Cybertruck off the highway. As it veers off the road, the slad-sided electric truck slams sideways into a ditch, causing it to roll over. While the truck lay upside down, its sensors detected the crash and automatically alerted emergency services. Fortunately, the driver wasn’t seriously injured, though he was taken to the hospital by ambulance after reporting back pain.

Copart

According to the Tesla owner, he had no prior interaction with the Ram driver, something he says is backed up by the footage he shared with police. After reviewing the video, the California Highway Patrol has reportedly charged the Ram driver with vehicular assault, though official confirmation from authorities has not been released publicly.

The aftermath wasn’t kind to the Tesla. The truck sustained heavy damage to its roof, wheels, suspension, and body panels. It later appeared on Copart, looking far worse for wear. Some parts may be salvageable, but the cost of repairing such a heavily damaged vehicle likely outweighs any benefit. The driver is presumably seeking reimbursement through his insurance provider.

As for motive, nothing has been officially confirmed. However, the incident brings to mind other recent reports of road rage or hostility directed at Tesla drivers. Unlike the usual vandalism or minor clashes, though, this sort of encounter could have ended far more dangerously. With any luck, the Ram driver, if found responsible, will think twice before acting on impulse behind the wheel.
