CATL’s New Fast-Charging EV Batteries Give You 320 Miles In Five Minutes

  • CATL’s second-gen Shenxing batteries can add 1.6 miles of range per second of charging.
  • Dual-power batteries promise over 930 miles of driving range for electric vehicles.
  • Sodium-ion batteries are safer, more resilient to cold weather, and could be cheaper.

Electric vehicles are evolving rapidly, and if you’re still skeptical, CATL has just unveiled a series of significant advancements in battery technology that will soon make their way into production models. The highlights include next-generation Shenxing batteries with ultra-fast charging capabilities, a new dual-power battery system for EVs, and sodium-ion batteries designed to perform better in colder climates.

Fast-Charging: A Game-Changer for EVs

The fast-charging news are probably the most important for the future of EVs, as they will eventually make charging stops as quick and easy as refueling stops for ICE-powered vehicles. In this context, CATL promises that its second-gen Shenxing batteries will add 520 km (320 miles) of range in five minutes of charging, which is the equivalent of gaining 2.5 km (1.6 miles) of range per second.

The fast-charging technology is undoubtedly the most significant development for the future of EVs, bringing us closer to a world where charging an electric vehicle is as quick and convenient as refueling a gasoline car. CATL’s second-gen Shenxing batteries aim to achieve just that, with a claimed ability to add 520 km (320 miles) of range in just five minutes of charging. To put that into perspective, that’s 2.5 km (1.6 miles) of range per second or about as fast as it takes to fill your average American car with gas.

More: Winter EV Range Test – 19 Cars Promised Over 300 Miles, But Only 4 Delivered

The impressive figure surpasses earlier developments by rival BYD, whose batteries will be able to add 400 km (249 miles) of range in just five minutes. For comparison, the first generation of CATL’s Shenxing batteries, which debuted in 2023, could replenish 400 km (249 miles) of range in ten minutes.

More Range, More Charging Speed, Even in the Cold

CATL’s second-gen Shenxing batteries promise a total range of up to 800 km (497 miles). Even better, they’ll be able to charge from 5% to 80% in just 15 minutes, even at chilly temperatures as low as -10°C (14°F). While we don’t yet know how many of the 67 new EVs launching in 2025 will be equipped with these second-gen batteries, it’s safe to say that the technology is coming sooner rather than later.

CATL’s New Fast-Charging EV Batteries Give You 320 Miles In Five Minutes

Dual-Power Batteries for Seriously Long Range

Another interesting development from CATL is the “Freevoy Dual Power Battery” technology. By combining two battery packs into one, an electric vehicle could achieve a range of over 1,500 km (932 miles), putting it on par with the most efficient range-extender hybrids. The new design splits the battery pack into two independent energy zones with different cell materials, somewhat akin to the dual-engine systems used in aircraft.

The auxiliary battery, acting as a range extender, won’t use graphite, making it smaller and cheaper to produce. However, the trade-off is slower charging speeds and fewer charging cycles, as these auxiliary batteries will only come into play once the main battery is empty, so they won’t be charged nearly as often.

CATL expects this dual-power battery technology to reach production EVs in the next 2-3 years, though they’re staying tight-lipped about which automaker will be the first to adopt it.

Sodium-Ion Batteries: Cold-Weather Warriors

CATL’s New Fast-Charging EV Batteries Give You 320 Miles In Five Minutes

Last but not least, CATL is advancing sodium-ion batteries, which are set to enter production in December 2025. These could potentially replace the lead-acid batteries in many ICE vehicles, as well as the lithium iron phosphate batteries used in hybrids and EVs. The key advantage of these batteries is their superior performance in cold weather, making them an attractive option for those in frigid climates.

The company claims its tests have shown that sodium-ion batteries can withstand extreme conditions whether it’s being punctured by needles, drilled, or even sliced in half with a power saw, without catching fire or exploding. Safety isn’t the only benefit, though.

More: CATL’s New EV Chassis Can Withstand 75 MPH Impact Without Catching Fire Or Exploding

These batteries also offer high energy density, providing over 200 km (124 miles) of range in plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and a robust lifecycle of 10,000 charges. Even at temperatures as low as -30°C (-22°F), these batteries can charge from 30% to 80% in just 30 minutes and will continue to perform normally at -40°C (-40°F).

Additionally, sodium-ion chemistry is expected to be more cost-effective than traditional lithium-ion batteries as the technology matures, which could bring a significant price advantage in the long run.

Zeekr’s Gold-Plated 009 Is The Rolls-Royce Of Minivans

  • Zeekr’s 009 Grand Collector Edition combines a 778 hp powertrain with a 108 kWh battery.
  • The cabin boasts luxurious Alpaca wool carpets, 24K gold accents, and a 43-inch 4K display.

Minivans have a surprising level of importance in China, sparking fierce competition among automakers to offer the most luxurious and opulent options. Geely is a key player in this race with its new Zeekr 009 Grand Collector Edition, a premium EV featuring 24K gold accents and plush Alpaca wool carpets inside the cabin.

More: Zeekr 9X Grand PHEV Is Geely’s $140k BMW And Range Rover Rival

The 5,217 mm-long (205.4 inches) Zeekr 009 Grand Collector Edition builds upon the standard Zeekr 009 Grand, which debuted last year. What sets this ultra-luxury trim apart are the gold details that are found on the bumpers, window surrounds, and side skirts, and which contrast sharply against the black exterior.

The gold accents extend to the badging and the 20-inch alloy wheels, which take design cues from Rolls-Royce, just in case you missed the luxury memo.

A 43-Inch Display

Step inside, and the real showstopper is the carpeting. Made from soft alpaca wool, these carpets are sourced from the necks and shoulders of young alpacas living at 13,000 feet in the Andes of Peru. So, yes, your feet will be treading on luxury. Let’s just hope passengers are mindful enough to remove their shoes, so they can truly experience what $123,000 worth of floor covering feels like.

\\\\\\\\\

The interior layout is focused entirely on comfort. With a four-seat configuration, rear passengers enjoy reclining captain’s chairs that feature a 24-way adjustable position, leg rests, retractable tables, and no fewer than eight massage programs. If you still need distractions, there’s also a 43-inch 4K display, electrochromic glass, a Yamaha sound system with 31 speakers, and an 18-liter compartment with heating, cooling, and sterilization functions. This is not your typical minivan.

Power and Performance

The underpinnings are the same as the Zeekr 009 Grand, but the powertrain is no slouch. Two electric motors generate a combined 778 horsepower (580 kW), delivering 810 Nm (597 lb-ft) of torque. This translates to a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of just 3.9 seconds, which is almost laughable for a minivan, except it isn’t.

The 108 kWh CATL-sourced Qilin battery provides a range of up to 702 km (436 miles) on the Chinese CTLC cycle, so you can travel in comfort—and speed—without worrying about recharging too soon.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

The Price Tag

The Zeekr 009 Grand Collector Edition is already available to order in China for a cool ¥899,000 ($123,000), making it ¥110,000 ($770) more expensive than the Zeekr 009 Grand. The new flagship trim will be showcased at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show, with deliveries expected to commence this June.

Now, about that price: the Zeekr 009 Grand Collector Edition will set you back ¥899,000 ($123,000), which is just ¥110,000 ($770) more than the standard Zeekr 009 Grand. It’s already available for order in China, with deliveries expected to begin in June 2025. If you’re in the market for luxury on wheels, you might want to take a look at the Zeekr 009 Grand, just be ready to break the bank.

Beyond the Grand Collector Edition, Zeekr has also introduced a right-hand-drive version of the 009. Additionally, the upcoming Zeekr 9X SUV will soon join the lineup, expanding Geely’s offerings under the Zeekr brand.

Does BMW’s Electric M3 Concept Look Any Better Without Camo?

  • BMW has revealed a camo-free version of the Vision Driving Experience concept.
  • The performance-focused EV gains a luminescent paint and an UV-reactive film.
  • The “Heart of Joy” super brain will power all future BMW Neue Klasse EVs.

BMW has unveiled a new iteration of its Vision Driving Experience concept for the Shanghai Auto Show, and while it’s not officially an electric M3, it’s about as close as we’re going to get for now. The study, which hints at the future of performance EVs, has shed its camouflage wrap and revealed more of the design language that will define BMW’s Neue Klasse lineup.

More: BMW’s Electric M3 Concept Getting Roasted On Social Media

The Vision Driving Experience was first introduced in February, but until now, it was hidden behind a rather uninspired camouflage livery. Now, BMW has taken the wraps off and gone for a “special luminescent paint.” The paint uses light-sensitive pigments that recharge in daylight and glow in the dark. To add to the visual drama, a special film on the rear bodywork creates a yellowish gradient under UV light.

A Glimpse of the Future (and Some Colorful Wheels)

Unsurprisingly, the electric M3—oops, I mean the Vision Driving Experience—shares a lot of design elements with the Vision Neue Klasse concept from 2023, albeit with beefed-up bumpers. Highlights include active aerodynamics, and yes, wheels that illuminate in different colors. These rims are practically a mood ring for your car: they turn green when you accelerate, blue when recovering energy, and orange when braking.

Test drivers Jens Klingmann and Elias Houndtonji took the wheel of the Vision Driving Experience during BMW’s Brand Night, showing off the car’s performance under the cover of darkness. They put the quad-motor powertrain and advanced torque-vectoring system to the test, showcasing the car’s handling on the move.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Torque Numbers That Raise Questions

Now, let’s talk torque. BMW claims the electric powertrain delivers a staggering 13,269 lb-ft (17,990 Nm) of torque. Yes, you read that correctly, but it’s almost certain that it measured at the wheels, not the crankshaft, because unless the laws of physics have been rewritten, that number is bonkers. Regardless, the “Heart of Joy” super brain controls pretty much everything, from driving dynamics to braking, energy recuperation, and steering.

More: BMW’s New EVs Come With 43 Layers Of Synthetic Vroom And Zero Shame

BMW has made it clear that the Vision Driving Experience concept “was designed for development purposes only and is not intended for series production.” However, the Neue Klasse design will gradually make its way across BMW’s entire lineup, both electric and internal combustion. Likewise, the “Heart of Joy” super brain will be integrated into future EVs, including those from the BMW M division, so you can expect some of that high-tech wizardry to trickle down to future performance models.

New Models and the iX3

BMW has said it plans to launch over 40 new and updated models by 2027. The first of these, the fully electric iX3, will begin production at the Debrecen plant in Hungary by the end of 2025. This SUV will be followed by a sedan in 2026, which is expected to carry the i3 name and serve as an electric alternative to the BMW 3 Series. So, if you’ve been hoping for an electrified 3 Series, it looks like your wish is about to come true.

The electric sedan will likely look most similar to the original Vision Neue Klasse concept, with the BMW M version drawing heavy inspiration from the Vision Driving Experience seen here.

Want To Break Your Dodge Charger Daytona? Try Slamming Its Hood

  • The electric Dodge Charger Daytona has specific instructions for properly closing the hood.
  • A certified mechanic explains why the frunk mechanism of the muscle car is prone to damage.
  • It’s unclear whether the upcoming ICE-powered versions will have similar hood sensitivity.

The launch of the new Charger Daytona hasn’t exactly gone according to Dodge’s master plan. It seems most buyers are still holding out for the ICE-powered versions. But for those who’ve already taken the plunge and bought the EV, they might want to be extra careful when closing the hood, unless they’re itching for a pricey trip to the service center.

More: This Dodge Charger ICE Prototype Allegedly Sounds Like A Hemi V8

According to Dodge’s official service manual, you can’t just slam the hood like you’re angry at it. No, the automaker suggests owners gently close it. In fact, they specifically warn against pressing or slamming it too hard, acknowledging that doing so could cause some damage. It’s a delicate dance with a car that’s supposedly meant to be tough enough for the masses (even if its price tag is anything but mainstream).

Technician Finds the Issue

Jordan Rose, a certified Mopar technician at Hall Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Virginia, recently shared a video showcasing two Chargers that suffered a similar issue with their hoods. For those who aren’t familiar, Rose has extensive experience with the quirks of early-production models, frequently working with a fleet of Chargers and sharing his findings on YouTube and Instagram.

In one case, the hood, or rather the frunk, of a red Charger wouldn’t open using the dashboard button, though the manual release still worked. Upon inspecting the latch, Rose noticed that it was bent. While he can’t say for certain how it happened, he suspects that the owner may have, perhaps, slammed the hood with a little too much gusto.

After removing the plastic covers and replacing the bent latch with a new one, the repair seemed to go off without a hitch. The button worked perfectly once the muscle car had been put back together.

Potential Problems with a Broken Latch

As highlighted by Mopar Insiders, a misaligned or broken latch is more than just a nuisance. It can leave your hood either stuck in an open position or bouncing around while you’re driving. Not exactly what you want happening in your brand-new car. Fortunately, Dodge has provided clear instructions to help owners avoid such issues.

So, now you know; treat the hood with the care and caution of a fragile antique, and you’ll hopefully avoid the kind of hood mishaps that lead to expensive repairs. If not, well, there’s always the service center waiting.

More: First Wrecked Dodge Charger Daytona EV Surfaces

It’ll be interesting to see if the hood of the ICE Charger Six Pack holds up better to rough handling, given its different design compared to the zero-emission version. More specifically, the gas-powered model features a bulging hood to accommodate the six-cylinder engine underneath and lacks the R-Wing front aero pass-through found on the EV.

Here’s the official guide from the Mopar Service Library on how to properly close the hood of your Charger Daytona:

INSTRUCTIONS
1In one continuous motion, gently lower the hood until it is resting on the latch mechanism.
2Place two hands on center of hood, above the latch mechanism.

Press down firmly until hood is latched.
3Confirm hood is latched in place.
CautionDo not drop or forcefully close hood. Doing so can cause damage to the hood.

Only use force on the areas highlighted in the image above.

Pressing down on areas outside of this area can cause damage.

Chinese EVs Banned From UK Military Sites Amid Fears They’re Watching Every Move

  • UK military staff are being advised not to park EVs with Chinese parts near sensitive sites.
  • Fears stem from Chinese laws granting government access to data collected by EV sensors.
  • The Defense Ministry wants “to mitigate any potential threats to national security from vehicles”.

Electric vehicles are becoming more advanced by the year, but their growing arsenal of sensors comes with growing concerns. Modern EVs are loaded with cameras, radar, and other tech that could, in theory, be used to collect sensitive data. With that in mind, UK military personnel have been quietly instructed not to park EVs containing Chinese parts near military facilities.

Officials have also been advised to avoid having sensitive conversations inside vehicles manufactured in China, citing fears of potential surveillance.

More: US President Says Chinese Cars Could Spy On Americans

According to UK legislation, the Chinese government has legal access to data collected by the cameras, sensors, and radar in locally built EVs. That access has raised concerns among UK officials about how this data might be used. These restrictions aren’t limited to brands based out of China, such as BYD, Great Wall Motors, MG, and Omoda. They also apply to any electric vehicle that incorporates Chinese-made components or technology.

Base Restrictions Reach the Ground

Citing insider sources, UK outlet The iPaper reports that personnel at RAF Wyton in Cambridgeshire have been told to park EVs with Chinese parts at least two miles away from key buildings. Similar restrictions are rumored to be in place at the Salisbury Plain military training area.

While these measures haven’t been officially announced, they’ve been hinted at in parliamentary discussions. According to the Daily Mail, Lord Coaker, Minister of State at the Ministry of Defense, said that the government is working with other departments to “understand and mitigate any potential threats to national security from vehicles.”

Chinese EVs Banned From UK Military Sites Amid Fears They’re Watching Every Move
BYD Sealion 7

Coaker was careful not to single out any one country, stating: “Our policies and procedures take account of the potential threats from all types of vehicle, not just those manufactured in China, and we have issued appropriate internal direction to all drivers and passengers. There are no centrally mandated policy restrictions on the movement of Chinese manufactured vehicles.”

A Push for Stricter Rules

He also acknowledged that some defense organizations may enforce stricter rules of their own, depending on the location, but added: “We do not provide specific details for security reasons.”

More: Massive VW Data Leak Exposed 800,000 EV Owners’ Movements, From Homes To Brothels

The Ministry of Defense did not confirm or deny the restrictions, offering a general statement: “Protecting national security is the foundation of everything we do. We have strict security procedures in place to ensure all sensitive information is protected.”

The military and government know the risks of Chinese espionage, but we cannot maintain our security with half-hearted measures.

We need to see a full pivot away from Chinese produced EVs in the British military and government fleets.

We know the risks, now we need to act fast… https://t.co/sbqNm1TJxi

— Alicia Kearns MP (@aliciakearns) April 17, 2025

Conservative Shadow Security Minister Alicia Kearns criticized what she sees as a lack of decisive action. “The military and government know the risks of Chinese espionage, but we cannot maintain our security with half-hearted measures,” she said. Kearns has called for a complete shift away from Chinese-made EVs in both government and military fleets.

These kinds of bans aren’t new. Over the past few years, China has implemented a similar restriction on Tesla vehicles, expanding it from military staff to government contractors, local authorities, highway operators, exhibition halls, and cultural centers. In that case, the concern was that the U.S. government could potentially access geographic and environmental data collected by Tesla.

New Jeep Compass Spied With EV Guts As Tariff Trouble Looms

  • The Jeep Compass is getting renewed in Europe, although US buyers may need to wait a bit longer.
  • A camouflaged prototype of the SUV made its spy debut in Italy, with a fully electric powertrain.
  • The SUV will also offer hybrid and plug-in hybrid options, riding on Stellantis underpinnings.

Jeep isn’t exactly known for keeping secrets, and the latest glimpse of the all-new third-generation Compass proves that trend is alive and well. The updated SUV has made its first undercover appearance in Europe, just weeks before its official debut, which has been confirmed for this spring.

Review: Jeep Avenger Proves ICE And Manual Combo Can Still Be Compelling

The camouflaged prototype was spotted in Italy during what appears to be the final stretch of development testing. Its overall silhouette sticks with familiar SUV proportions, though a few design details are immediately noticeable. Shorter overhangs and a more squared-off stance give it a subtly tougher look compared to the outgoing model.

Slim Lights, Covered Grille, and a Bit of Mystery

Previous teasers pointed to slim LED headlights flanking a redesigned seven-slot grille, which is expected to be illuminated. On the prototype, however, that grille is completely covered, likely hiding final details. The front bumper features a cooling intake with active flaps, a design cue aimed at improving aerodynamics, something that’s always been relevant in the EV era.

According to our spy photographers, the prototype shown here is running a fully electric powertrain, which explains the absence of an exhaust pipe. Jeep has already confirmed that the new Compass will be available in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric versions. That puts it in line with other Stellantis-brand SUVs that share similar platforms and tech.

A Big Platform Upgrade

The next-gen Compass will finally retire its aging FCA-era platform and shift to Stellantis’ more modern STLA Medium architecture. This updated structure is shared with models like the Peugeot 3008 and 5008, Opel Grandland, and the DS 8. It’s also expected to underpin the next Citroen C5 Aircross and DS 7, signaling Jeep’s move toward a more flexible and electrified future.

More: This Stellantis Brand Is Working On A Spicy SUV With An Electric Twist

If the Compass borrows specs from the Peugeot e-3008, we could see up to 321 horsepower (239 kW / 325 PS) from a dual-motor setup, offering all-wheel drive as standard on the top trim. The e-3008 comes with 73 kWh and 97 kWh battery options, both of which would make sense for the Jeep, depending on how the lineup is structured.

Production of the new Compass is slated to begin in Italy later this year, with the European market rollout following soon after. Originally, North American production was planned for 2026 in Canada, but those plans are now on hold. Ongoing uncertainty around US tariffs on imported vehicles has reportedly pushed back Jeep’s North American timeline.

Genesis Concept Eyes Defender With Sci-Fi Looks And Throwback Analog Interior

  • Genesis has introduced the new X Gran Equator Concept at the New York Auto Show.
  • The concept is an off-road-focused SUV with exaggerated proportions and 24-inch wheels.
  • The interior adopts an analogue design with physical controls instead of oversized screens.

Genesis might have already caught our attention with the G90-based X Gran Coupe and Convertible concepts at the Seoul Mobility Show, but it’s not done yet. For the New York Auto Show, the brand is pulling the wraps off another wild card called the X Gran Equator Concept. This off-road SUV combines a futuristic, clean-cut exterior with a surprisingly retro-styled interior, signaling yet another interesting design experiment from Genesis.

More: Genesis Might Kill Its Cheapest Model But It’s Not Sure What Comes Next

The X Gran Equator debuts the latest take on Genesis’ “Athletic Elegance” design language, now interpreted through what the brand calls the “rugged spirit of overlanding.” That means the SUV rides high on 24-inch beadlock wheels wrapped in aggressive all-terrain tires, with a substantial amount of ground clearance for good measure.

A Different Kind of Genesis SUV

The exaggerated proportions include a short front overhang, an extended hood, and a narrow windshield, giving the X Gran Equator a look that’s a clear departure from last year’s Neolun concept. And while the long dash-to-axle ratio hints at classic luxury proportions, the absence of visible front cooling intakes suggests this is a fully electric vehicle.

True to the Genesis design formula, the lighting signature is defined by two parallel lines at both the front and rear, continuing cleanly into the bodywork. The front bumper houses additional LEDs for better nighttime visibility, while the rear features a sleek, minimal design capped off by a split tailgate. Plastic cladding around the wheel arches and bumpers is present, but subtle, reinforcing the vehicle’s premium look rather than detracting from it.

\\\\\

A Cabin Full of Surprises

Inside, Genesis has gone in a very different direction. There’s no infotainment display in the usual sense and instead, the center of the dashboard features four circular screens that mimic the look of classic analog dials. These are customizable digital displays, and they sit alongside a three-gauge digital instrument cluster with a similarly vintage aesthetic.

More: 2026 Hyundai Nexo FCEV Is A Hydrogen SUV That Makes Sense

Physical controls dominate the cabin. The center console is lined with chunky toggle switches, the steering wheel is packed with buttons, and the stalks are satisfyingly oversized. The four-seat layout includes swiveling front seats, multiple sunroofs, and modular storage throughout. The materials are high-end, with bold color combinations and diagonal stitching patterns that give the cabin a sense of tailored detail.

Off-Road Capabilities, Still a Mystery

There is no word on technical specifications, so we don’t know whether the X Gran Equator was based on a unibody architecture or a ladder frame chassis. Still, the company has hinted at the concept’s off-road capabilities, saying it is “engineered to perform in extreme conditions while maintaining a natural sense of grace”.

\\\\

Will It Actually Be Built?

For now, Genesis says the X Gran Equator Concept is “not confirmed for production.” Still, the automaker has made it clear that design elements like the split tailgate and integrated roof rails are hints at what’s to come. It also points to a broader strategy: expanding further into “lifestyle-oriented vehicles.”

That could mean Genesis is exploring a competitor to the upcoming all-electric Mercedes G-Class or even a zero-emission alternative to the Land Rover Defender.

Europeans are notoriously loyal to their automotive brands, especially when it comes to premium options. However, that hasn’t stopped Seres, a fresh-faced Chinese automaker, from dipping its toes into the European market with a fully electric SUV. We recently spent a week behind the wheel of the Seres 5 to see what it has to offer prospective buyers.

The Seres 5 made its European debut in 2023, with a slow rollout across the continent through 2024. The model mirrors the design of the Chinese version that has been around since 2019, albeit with a slightly longer body. In 2022, Seres teamed up with Huawei to launch the Aito M5, a revamped version, but the global-spec Seres 5 we tested hasn’t yet gotten the same redesign.

Seres, formerly known as SF Motors, may be rooted in China, but it has a Silicon Valley presence and once had grand ambitions of selling cars in the U.S. These plans, however, appear to have been quietly shelved as the company shifts its focus to Europe, South America, and the Middle East.

Smooth and Curvy Lines

Unlike many new Chinese car brands that lean heavily on copying their established competitors (we’re looking at you, other automakers), Seres has made an attempt to bring something new to the table. Sure, eagle-eyed car nerds might spot a few design cues reminiscent of other cars—like the DS-style curvy daytime running lights or a subtle nod to the Porsche Macan in the rear end—but for the most part, the Seres 5 stands on its own.

The standout feature of the aerodynamic bodywork is the leaf-shaped greenhouse, highlighted by chrome accents. The EV’s silhouette blurs the lines between traditional and coupe-style SUVs, emphasizing the sculpted rear shoulders. The standard 21-inch alloy wheels, paired with red brake calipers, set a sporty tone, reinforcing that the Seres 5 is more of a GT crossover than an adventurous SUV.

\\\\\\\\\\

During my time behind the wheel of the Seres 5, I noticed it attracted more attention than your average EV, turning plenty of heads—though that might also be because it’s a fresh new offering sparking curiosity. However, despite its recent arrival in Europe, the design is starting to feel outdated compared to newer competitors.

With a length of 4,710 mm (185 inches), the Seres 5 is a direct competitor to the Tesla Model Y, although the brand would prefer to position it against similarly-sized premium SUVs such as the BMW iX3, Mercedes GLC, and Audi Q6 E-tron.

The Cabin Is A Nice Place To Be

Step inside and you’re greeted by premium materials including the Nappa leather upholstery and the wood inserts. The perceived quality and the fit and finish is better than you would expect from a new brand, even though it doesn’t reach the levels of high-end models from the likes of BMW and Genesis. The standard equipment is quite generous and includes a panoramic glass roof and comfortable seats with heating, ventilation, massage, and memory functions.

The floating center console is a nice touch, incorporating a proper gear lever, storage compartments, and two wireless charging pads with cooling. The centerpiece is a Tesla-like 15.6-inch touchscreen, which is home to all of the vehicle’s functions.

While the infotainment system’s interface is fairly easy to use, it’s missing physical controls for key functions like A/C and drive modes—making it occasionally frustrating to navigate on the fly. Sure, there are buttons on the steering wheel for media and calls, but the ADAS stalk feels a bit like something from a previous generation.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

At first, it seems that your smartphone can only connect to the system via Bluetooth. However, we later learned that the vehicle comes pre-installed with a third-party app, adding wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

The digital instrument cluster and head-up display give you all the essential info, but their graphics could use a refresh—they only change when you’re in the Race driving mode. On a positive note, the infotainment screen features sharp wallpapers and quirky widgets like “Take A Break” and “Camping Mode,” so at least you’ll have something to occupy your mind when the car is parked. Unfortunately, I was let down by the audio system—while the bass and volume are fine, the clarity just doesn’t live up to expectations.

Rear passengers are treated with the same level of quality as the ones in the front seats, having access to their own USB ports, climate vents, seat back net pockets, and a central armrest with cupholders and a storage cubby. Once you get past the weird shape of the rear doors, there is more than enough headroom for tall individuals. Rear legroom is adequate, but not as generous as in some other models in the category.

The boot space is where things get a little tight at 367 liters (13 cubic feet) in the five-seater configuration and an additional 67 liters (2.4 cubic feet) in the trunk. Then there’s the tailgate: to be honest, I spent several minutes trying to figure out how to open it. It turns out that the dedicated button is mounted on the rear windscreen wiper. Owners will know, but it’s not convenient having to explain this to every single one of your passengers when they want to put something at the back, although their reactions should be interesting.

Driving Impressions: An Electric Grand Tourer

Even after the first minutes of driving the Seres 5, I was impressed with the high levels of comfort, as the suspension smoothed out the bumps, cracks, and potholes of the roads. The chassis feels sturdy and the sound insulation is on par with premium rivals, making the cabin a sanctuary. here’s just one small issue: the faint hiss from the electric motor at low speeds, which, while minor, is noticeable if you’re paying attention.

Despite the intimidating figures which would put any ’90s supercar to shame, the Seres 5 proved to be friendly behind the wheel. This is especially evident in Eco mode, which prioritizes efficiency over performance. Comfort mode gives access to more grunt and is perfect for daily use, while Sport and Race unleash the full 577 hp (430 kW / 585 PS) and 940 Nm (693 lb-ft) of torque.

Even in the sportiest settings, the Seres 5 remains composed, offering smooth power delivery and minimal wheel spin when you floor it from a standstill. Acceleration is impressive, especially when you’re cruising between 60-140 km/h (37-87 mph), making highway overtakes feel effortless. This is where the Seres 5 excels as a long-distance cruiser.

The steering is notably light by default, making it ideal for city driving, but less suited for spirited handling. Luckily, there’s a setting that adds weight to the steering, though it requires disabling some lane-keeping ADAS features first, and it still feels artificial. Overall, while the Seres 5 packs plenty of power and the suspension manages its weight well, it’s clear that this vehicle wasn’t built for chasing hot hatches on winding roads.

Range And Charging

In terms of range, you can expect about 400 km (250 miles) from the 80 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack if you’re driving sensibly. The most efficient drivers might push closer to the WLTP estimate of 483 km (300 miles), but it’s tough to hold back when 577 hp is tempting you with every press of the accelerator. That said, the Seres 5’s range is comparable to the outgoing Tesla Model Y Performance, which was rated for 280 miles in the US, though most real-world drivers saw closer to 240-260 miles.

The battery can charge from 30% to 80% in 25 minutes using a 100 kW DC charger. While that’s decent, it’s not as fast as some rival EVs from the Hyundai Group or other Chinese automakers. It’s also worth noting that while the BEV is the only option available in Europe, buyers in China have the option of a range-extender powertrain, which is better suited for hypermiling.

\\\\\\\\\\\
\\\\\\\\\\

Pricing And Rivals

Unlike other Chinese automakers like BYD, which target price-conscious buyers, Seres has positioned its only EV offering closer to European pricing. In Greece, where we tested it, the Seres 5 is priced at €57,500 (equal to $62,500) with local EV subsidies. In Germany, where availability is more limited, the price jumps to €64,990 ($70,700). These figures apply to the full-spec AWD trim, which is currently the only option available in Europe.

As is typical with a new brand like Seres, depreciation is something potential buyers should keep in mind. Used 2024 models with very low mileage can already be found for as little as €40,000 ($43,700)—not great for the original owners, but a pretty sweet deal for anyone looking for a one-year-old EV with plenty of performance.

Review: The Facelifted Kia EV6 Is Better Than Ever, But We’d Wait For The EV5

When it comes to competition, the Seres 5 faces stiff challenges. The Tesla Model Y, for example, offers a comparable AWD Long Range trim starting at €43,990 ($47,900) in Greece. The facelifted Kia EV6 GT AWD is also a solid contender at €56,990 ($62,000).

There are a few premium offerings in the same price range, but they tend to be less powerful in their base configurations. For example, the outgoing BMW iX3 (not offered in the US) starts at €52,950 ($57,600) here in Greece, the Lexus RZ450e is priced at €58,700 ($63,900), and the newer Audi Q6 E-tron kicks off at a considerably higher €67,980 ($73,900). It will be interesting to see how the prices of the upcoming BMW iX3 Neue Klasse and the fully electric successor to the Mercedes-Benz GLC compare.

Verdict

The all-electric Seres 5 offers a comfortable ride, plenty of power, and the kind of premium feel you’d expect from a more established brand. Despite being a newcomer, it has a distinctive design and a high-quality interior, packed with standard features. However, it does fall short in a few key areas, including the absence of physical controls for essential functions, and some design elements that feel a bit dated.

The biggest hurdle for the Seres 5, however, is the intense competition it faces from well-established brands that already have loyal customer bases. On top of that, it lacks both the brand prestige of its European and Japanese rivals and the price advantage typically associated with Chinese models—one of the main selling points for many buyers.

If Seres can manage to lower the price, it might be worth considering introducing the Chinese-market range-extender version of the 5 in Europe, which could give the car a much-needed edge.

This Stellantis Brand Is Working On A Spicy SUV With An Electric Twist

  • A camouflaged prototype of the Opel Grandland hints at the upcoming GSe trim.
  • The new flagship version of the lineup is expected to adopt a sportier stance.
  • The prototype appears to be a BEV, and could benefit from a revised chassis setup.

Opel, the German brand Stellantis picked up from GM, is preparing to launch a new generation of its largest SUV offering, aiming to appeal to buyers who want a blend of everyday practicality and performance without making (many) compromises in either direction.

Continuing in the footsteps of its predecessor, the range-topping version of the new Opel Grandland is expected to wear the GSe badge. This trim typically carries a slightly sportier look than the rest of the lineup, and new spy shots of a lightly camouflaged prototype recently caught testing in Europe hint at some styling tweaks in the works.

More: Which European Car Should Stellantis Import Or Rebadge For America?

Although the prototype is finished in all black, Opel may opt to paint the bumper cladding, side skirts, and wheel arches in body color to help distinguish the GSe variant visually. The presence of duct tape on the front and rear ends suggests there could be some updates hiding underneath—possibly redesigned bumpers or aerodynamic tweaks.

Another telling detail is the black alloy wheels with a diamond-cut finish appear to be larger and sport a different design than those found on the Grandland GS Line.

Hybrid Roots, Electric Future

Like its platform-mates, the Peugeot 3008 and 5008, the Grandland benefits from the flexibility of the STLA Medium architecture, which supports mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric powertrains.

The prototype of the Grandland GSe misses out on the front bumper intake which is found in all trims with a combustion engine under the hood. This suggests that the GSe will likely use a zero-emission powertrain. If that’s the case, it would mark a clear performance step up from its PHEV predecessor.

The GSe stands for “Grand Sport Electric”, so a dual electric motor setup sounds like the most fitting option. Currently, the high-output version of the electric Grandland makes 320 hp (240 kW / 326 PS). This is already more powerful than the plug-in hybrid setups of the old Grandland GSe, which was rated at 296 hp (220 kW / 300 PS), and the new Astra GSe warm hatch/estate that makes 222 hp (165 kW / 225 PS).

More: Opel/Vauxhall Astra GSe Is An Electrified Warm Hatch And Estate With 222 HP

Interestingly, the previous Grandland GSe didn’t offer more power than the regular plug-in hybrid model, instead focusing on a revised chassis setup. Whether Opel sticks to that formula this time or actually turns up the performance dial remains to be seen.

When Will It Arrive?

The Opel Grandland GSe is expected to arrive later in 2025. The SUV could be joined by sportier versions of the Peugeot 3008 and 5008, potentially adopting the iconic GTI badge, which has been confirmed to make a return. As for the upcoming Citroen C5 Aircross twin, it may skip a performance variant altogether, given its comfort-focused character.

2026 Polestar 2 Looks The Same But Hides Major Interior Upgrade

  • The Polestar 2 gains Snapdragon chip boosting infotainment speed and connectivity.
  • Optional Bowers & Wilkins 14-speaker system adds 1,350 Watts of premium audio clarity.
  • New CATL-sourced 70 kWh battery increases WLTP range of base model to 344 miles.

The Polestar 2 is the longest-serving member of the lineup, having debuted in 2019. Despite its age, the Swedish brand has kept it up to date with a 2023 facelift and a steady stream of model year updates. For 2026, the fully electric liftback gets a tech-focused refresh that includes a new infotainment processor, an optional Bowers & Wilkins audio system, and expanded personalization options.

More: Volvo Owners Find Fake ‘Bowers & V Vilkins’ Speakers In Chinese Cars

Starting with the exterior, the Polestar 2 is now available in a Dune shade, a sandy hue with a smooth mica finish that replaces the Jupiter color. In addition, the optional Performance Pack also features updated 20-inch forged alloy wheels with a fresh five-spoke design.

Moving inside, the EV gains a more advanced Qualcomm Snapdragon processor chip, bringing it closer to the rest of the Polestar lineup in terms of computing power. The upgraded chip boosts download speeds, improves responsiveness, and enhances the overall performance of the infotainment system.

An interesting addition to the optional equipment is the Bowers & Wilkins audio system with 14 speakers and a total output of 1,350 Watts. Furthermore, the optional Plus Pack adds a new bio-attributed MicroTech upholstery finished in Charcoal with a quilting design, and Black Ash inserts. Finally, the new Prime Pack bundles together the Pilot, Plus, and Climate packs alongside privacy glass on the rear side windows and rear glass.

\\\\\\

There are no mechanical changes for 2026, but the CATL-sourced 70 kWh battery option that was introduced last year will be made available in more markets, replacing the older 69 kWh battery supplied by LG Chem. This results in a slight increase to the WLTP figure of the Standard Range Single Motor variant, from 546 km (339 miles) to 554 km (344 miles).

More: Volvo Dealers To Sell Polestars To Boost Sales

The Polestar 2 is compatible with the Plug & Charge technology introduced by the Polestar 3, which allows drivers to simply plug in the cable to a public charger and let the vehicle initiate and authenticate the process.

The 2026 Polestar 2 is already available to order in Europe, with other markets, including the US, set to follow later this year.

17 Teslas Torched In Rome In What May Be Largest Attack In Europe Yet

  • A new fire in Rome is the latest in a series of incidents targeting Tesla around the world.
  • High temperatures from the blaze damaged 17 EVs, and the surrounding structure.
  • No injuries were reported, and local authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire.

A suspicious fire that tore through a Tesla dealership in Rome early Monday morning has left behind a scorched mess of metal and plenty of questions. At least 17 fully electric vehicles were destroyed in the blaze, marking the latest in a string of troubling incidents involving Tesla facilities around the globe.

The incident arrives amid growing backlash against Elon Musk, raising suspicions that this wasn’t just some random electrical mishap. While the exact cause remains under investigation, authorities have not ruled out arson. Fortunately, no one was injured, as the dealership was closed at the time of the fire. Still, the loss is significant, not just in property, but in what it might signal.

More: Man Tries To Torch Tesla Superchargers But Ends Up Torching Himself

According to local media, emergency services were alerted around 4 a.m. on Monday, March 31. Police have since questioned the dealership’s owners and are combing through CCTV footage, Reuters reports.

The fire broke out at the Tesla store located at 48 Via Serracapriola in Rome. Drone footage shared by the YouTube channel Local Team shows the parking lot littered with charred vehicle shells. At least 16 Teslas appear to have suffered irreparable damage.

These cars were reportedly prepped and ready for delivery to customers. Furthermore, the shed covering them was also damaged by the intense heat, though the Tesla dealership’s main building seems to have escaped the worst of it.

A Brand Under Fire—Literally

The timing is hard to ignore. Just two days before the fire, the so-called “Tesla Takedown” movement organized protests outside more than 200 Tesla dealerships across Europe and North America. Most gatherings remained peaceful, but a handful of them escalated into vandalism—and now, possibly worse.

Earlier this month, suspicious fires destroyed multiple Tesla EVs across the USA, as well as in Italy, Germany, and France. In Ontario, Canada, more than 80 vehicles were vandalized at a single Tesla dealership—another flashpoint in what’s quickly becoming a global anti-Musk movement. If there’s no connection between these incidents, it would be one hell of a coincidence.

Volvo 240R EV Study Throws A Brick At Electric Performance

  • The Volvo 240R is an independent concept for a high-performance sedan and wagon.
  • It blends the boxy shape of the classic Volvo 200 Series with modern design elements.
  • The project was created by independent designer Jordan Rubinstein-Towler.

Polestar has come a long way from its origins as Volvo’s performance division, evolving into a standalone electric vehicle manufacturer. But with this shift in direction, it raises the inevitable question: Will future Volvo models get high-performance variants like BMW’s M division or Mercedes’ AMG lineup? Well, independent designer Jordan Rubinstein-Towler has ventured into this very idea with his creation, the 240R, which is a high-performance, retro-futuristic take on his own Volvo 240 concept.

A Nod to the Past with a Twist

In keeping with the spirit of the original design study, the Volvo 240R blends the unmistakable boxy shape of the old 200 Series with modern styling. The R version introduces a sporty bodykit—think deeper bumpers, side skirts, a subtle diffuser, and a ducktail spoiler. It’s like the 240 got a solid workout, but still managed to keep its classic personality.

More: Modern Volvo 240 Design Study Proves Boxy Can Be Sexy Again

\\\\\\\\\\

The renders speak for themselves. Rubinstein-Towler’s design work strikes a perfect balance with black and body-colored accents on the revamped parts, delivering that classic yet contemporary look. To really emphasize the performance angle, the car rolls on new black five-spoke alloy wheels, an homage to Volvo’s sporty heritage.

In one of the renderings, the sedan poses next to a Volvo 240 racer that enjoyed great success in touring car championships back in the ’80s. Likewise, the wagon is joined by the Volvo 850 R from the mid-90s.

Modern Interior, Retro Vibes

But the 240R isn’t just about looking fast on the outside—Rubinstein-Towler has also done some work on the interior. Highlights include the blue upholstery that brings a splash of color to the retro-inspired bucket seats, along with a fresh new steering wheel design. The digital cockpit, while updated, keeps things minimalist with a few smaller displays, paired with physical controls to preserve that tactile feel on the center console.

\\\\\\\

Power to Match the Looks?

Now, if this car ever made it to production, what’s going to power this modern interpretation of the classic ‘brick’? Since the modern reimagining of the Volvo 240 is an electric vehicle, the (fictional) 240R would also be expected to run on a zero-emission powertrain.

A quick peek into the Geely parts bin—Volvo’s parent company—shows that a high-performance electric car is well within reach. Take the Twin Motor Performance version of the new Volvo ES90, for instance; it produces a combined 671 hp (680 PS / 500 kW). That’s plenty of power for both a high-performance sedan and wagon.

Speaking of the ES90, the electric liftback sedan recently debuted as a direct rival to the BMW i5 and Mercedes EQE. From Rubinstein-Towler’s renderings, it looks like his 240R proposal could slot in just below that model, potentially filling the gap left by the soon-to-be-discontinued S60/V60.

More: Volvo Doesn’t Need Wagons Anymore, Says SUVs Are The Future

Such an offering would compete against the upcoming BMW Neue Klasse i3 and the electric Mercedes C-Class. BMW M has already teased a high-performance version of the electric sedan, while Mercedes is expected to release an AMG version sooner or later.

Hopefully, Volvo’s design team is paying attention to the innovative concepts emerging from independent designers. Perhaps they’ll find some inspiration for future models – assuming they’re not too busy figuring out how to make their SUVs even more ubiquitous.

Could This Mystery Nissan SUV Be The New Xterra?

  • Nissan has teased an “adventure-focused SUV” with an electric powertrain for North America.
  • While the name has yet to be confirmed, the EV could signal the return of the Xterra moniker.
  • The model is scheduled to debut by Q1 2028, and will be produced in the Mississippi plant.

Among the many models teased by Nissan during its recent product roadmap presentation, one caught our attention: a mystery electric SUV heading to North America. And while the details are still sparse, it sounds like a perfect candidate for a modern-day reincarnation of the Xterra.

This SUV appeared in a group teaser alongside the facelifted Pathfinder and new versions of the Rogue (X-Trail) SUVs. Nissan described it as an “adventure-focused SUV” while confirming that it’s an electric vehicle.

More: Nissan To Offer Four Different Midsize Pickups Globally By 2027

Nissan revealed that the “all-new” electric SUV will be produced at the Canton, Mississippi plant, with production set to begin at the end of the Japanese fiscal year 2027, which wraps up on March 31, 2028.

From the official (darkened) photo, the SUV appears to feature a boxy shape, bulky roof rails, and a fully covered grille with integrated LED graphics and an illuminated Nissan emblem. The rear shoulders are nicely toned, while dynamic lines grace the hood, and plastic cladding around the wheel arches adds a rugged touch. It’s a design that hints at the vehicle’s adventure-oriented nature.

According to Car and Driver, design prototypes they’ve seen lean into an off-road aesthetic, further fueling speculation that this could be a spiritual successor to the Xterra.

The electric SUV (above) made its first appearance in a group teaser (below).
Could This Mystery Nissan SUV Be The New Xterra?

Compact and Adventure-Ready

The SUV appears to be smaller than the Pathfinder and the Rogue, suggesting it will slot into the compact segment. While Nissan hasn’t revealed any specific details, it’s likely that this new EV will be built on a unibody architecture, distancing it from the ladder-frame setup of the old Xterra. However, a beefed-up suspension, dual-motor all-wheel drive, and off-road technology could still give it the rugged capabilities the Xterra was known for.

The Story Of The Nissan Xterra

The Nissan Xterra, first introduced in 1999, was a rugged, off-road-ready SUV that drew its underpinnings from the Nissan Frontier pickup. The second generation arrived in 2005, and both generations offered rear-wheel drive (RWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) configurations. Unfortunately, the Xterra was discontinued in 2015 without a direct successor.

In 2018, Nissan unveiled the Terra, a Navara-based SUV aimed at Asian markets. While it was updated in 2020 and renamed the X-Terra for the Middle East, it was never sold in North America.

Last year, Ponz Pandikuthira, Senior Vice President and Chief Planning Officer for Nissan Americas, said that a new generation of the Nissan Xterra was “very actively considered”, describing it as an “authentic and serious truck” with a relatively affordable price point. More recently, it was reported that Nissan could be working on a modern Xterra study for the 2025 SEMA Show, dubbed “Project X”.

We’ll have to wait a little longer to learn about Nissan’s plans for reviving the Xterra, but an affordable boxy SUV with an electric powertrain, like in this teaser, should do the trick.

Infiniti Plans Three New Models By 2028

  • The facelifted Infiniti QX60 will debut in 2025, alongside a Sport package for the QX80.
  • The new QX65 crossover coupe will follow in 2026 as the QX60’s sportier sibling.
  • Infiniti will launch an electric SUV in 2028, while its electric sedan has likely been delayed.

Infiniti, following in the footsteps of its parent company Nissan, has dropped several teasers of upcoming models, giving us a glimpse into its future plans. Among the highlights are a new SUV Coupe, a facelifted QX60, and (naturally) an electric SUV.

QX60 Facelift and New QX65

We’ll start with the the second-generation QX60, which made its debut in 2021 and shares its foundation with the Nissan Pathfinder. Based on official teasers and spy shots, we can expect a mid-cycle refresh later this year. The redesign will include a new front end with an illuminated badge and a few other styling tweaks. So, if you were hoping for a major overhaul, it’s not exactly here. But, hey, a fresh look is still a fresh look.

More: All The New Nissan Models Arriving By 2027, From Sentra To Frontier

Next up is the Infiniti QX65 crossover coupe, set to debut in 2026. It’ll come with split LED headlights and a sharply sloped roofline inspired by the original Infiniti FX. Positioned as a sleeker, two-row alternative to the QX60, the QX65 will likely be powered by the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 268 hp (200 kW / 272 PS).

On the larger end of the spectrum, the QX80 will get a Sport package in 2025. This facelifted version will likely give the flagship SUV a bit more edge, though it’s unclear just how “sporty” it will actually get. Either way, it’ll be offered in Latin America and the Middle East.

Infiniti Plans Three New Models By 2028
The Infiniti QX65 (left), the future EV (middle), and the facelifted QX60 (right).

Electric SUV

Infiniti has also teased a fully electric SUV, which seems to be the production version of the Vision QX Inspiration concept from 2019. Set to arrive in 2028, the new model will incorporate Infiniti’s latest “Artistry in Motion” design language, along with a range of tech features that sound impressive in the press release.

What About The Long Promised Electric Sedan?

Interestingly, the electric sedan, based on the Vision Qe concept, was notably absent from the press release. Initially, this model was supposed to debut before the SUV, but now it looks like the timeline might have shifted past 2028. It could be that Infiniti has quietly pushed back its electric car rollout in response to the US market’s shifting tax credits under President Trump. Originally, the plan was for Infiniti to manufacture its electric vehicles in Canton, Mississippi.

Hyundai Teases New Electric SUV In China That Looks Nothing Like The Ioniq 9

  • Hyundai’s first electric SUV for China will debut soon with unique styling.
  • The model appeared in a video teaser during cold weather testing.
  • Hyundai’s new R&D center in Shanghai is spearheading its development

Hyundai is preparing to unveil a new fully electric SUV, specifically designed for the Chinese market. This upcoming model, which remains unnamed for now, is a result of the Beijing Hyundai joint venture, and it recently made its first appearance in an official teaser ahead of its expected launch later this year.

The teaser reveals a camouflaged prototype of the SUV undergoing cold-weather testing. Despite the cover-up, we can catch a glimpse of distinct styling elements that set this SUV apart from the global Hyundai Ioniq 9, which is notably absent in China.

More: Chinese-Owned EV Brands Gain Momentum In Europe, Collectively Outsell Tesla

Even under camouflage wraps, the SUV’s design features some clear visual cues. The headlights are connected by a slender LED strip along the front. The rear sports a muscular shoulder line that flows into a more upright tail, complete with an integrated spoiler. Not to be overlooked are the full-width LED taillights, which stretch toward the sides, enhancing the SUV’s profile.

Hyundai recently opened an R&D center in Shanghai, dedicated to developing electric models specifically for the Chinese market.

\\\\\\\

Beijing Hyundai

While we’re still waiting for detailed specifications, it’s likely the new SUV will be built on Hyundai’s E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform), which is shared across their Ioniq and Kia EV lines. This platform supports both single and dual motor setups and can handle battery packs as large as 110.3 kWh, suggesting this SUV could offer impressive range and performance.

More: Any Idea What Hyundai Is Teasing Here?

Currently, Beijing Hyundai’s offerings are limited to internal combustion engine (ICE) models, including popular vehicles like the Sonata and Elantra sedans, the Tucson L and Santa Fe SUVs, and the Mufasa SUV. The only electric model available in China right now is the performance-oriented Ioniq 5 N, imported directly from Hyundai’s global lineup.

We’ll get more details about this new fully electric SUV on March 28. Whether that will be the official debut or just another teaser remains unclear, but for now, the teaser video below will have to do.

All The New Nissan Models Arriving By 2027, From Sentra To Frontier

  • Nissan will launch over 14 new and facelifted models over the next two years.
  • North America will get a new Leaf, a new Sentra, and no less than four SUVs.
  • Highlights from other markets include Micra and Juke EVs, minivans and pickups.

Nissan is having a rough go of it. Between plummeting sales, financial struggles, failed merger talks with Honda, and the resignation of its CEO, things aren’t exactly looking up. But rather than giving up, the Japanese automaker is making its move. With a fresh strategy in place, Nissan is gearing up to unveil a series of new and revamped models by 2027.

The brand’s revamped lineup will feature a mix of combustion, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric powertrains. Nissan has already dropped teasers of several models set to roll out over the next two years, targeting various markets across the globe.

For North America, Nissan will roll out a batch of fresh cars, including new generations of the Nissan Leaf EV, the Sentra sedan, and the Rogue SUV, alongside a facelifted version of the Pathfinder.

The New Leaf Becomes A Crossover

First up, the Leaf. No longer a plain-Jane hatchback, the new version is going full crossover, complete with sleeker styling, 19-inch wheels, and a panoramic moonroof. It will be built on the CMF-EV platform, borrowed from the larger Ariya, and will have “significant range improvements” over its predecessor. Oh, and it will be the first Nissan to feature the NACS charging port, so it’s officially Tesla Supercharger-compatible.

It’s worth mentioning that the new Nissan Leaf will be a global offering, not just for North America. It will also be available in Europe, Japan, and Australia.

Rogue and Pathfinder Updates

The 2026 Nissan Rogue (aka the X-Trail in other markets) is getting a powertrain upgrade. It’ll be available in gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid versions. The e-Power hybrid, which uses a 1.5-liter engine that acts as a generator for the electric motor powering the wheels, is back for another round.

And in case you haven’t been paying attention, the Rogue PHEV will actually be a rebadged Mitsubishi Outlander. Yes, Nissan is using its Renault-Mitsubishi-Nissan alliance to repurpose a Mitsubishi design for this one. If you were hoping for something entirely new, you might want to adjust your expectations.

The Pathfinder, meanwhile, gets a mid-lifecycle facelift, with a new nose that should bring it into line with the rest of Nissan’s lineup. Expect that to be unveiled later this year.

New Sentra And More SUVs

Alongside it, a redesigned Sentra compact sedan will make its debut, with sharper looks that may or may not make you care more about compact sedans in general.

Finally, Nissan has also teased an “adventure-focused SUV” with an electric powertrain that will be manufactured at the Canton Mississippi plant in the US starting in 2027. The yet-unnamed model has a boxy stance and futuristic LEDs, and appears to be smaller than the Rogue and the Pathfinder.

Electric Micra and Juke for Europe

\\\\\

Over in Europe, Nissan is set to launch the fully electric Micra, which will finally get its production version after being teased since 2022. Sharing its underpinnings with the Renault R5 E-Tech, this little EV will likely appeal to those who want to go green while still having a cute, compact car to get around in.

Another important debut for Europe will be the fully electric version of the Nissan Juke, inspired by the Hyper Punk concept. The zero-emission subcompact SUV is different from the ICE-powered Juke, featuring a heavily sculpted bodywork while retaining some of its quirkiness.

In the same region, the Nissan Qashqai will receive the third-gen e-Power hybrid powertrain, which promises better fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.

A New Frontier / Navara For Latin America And A Different Pickup For Australia

Another notable debut is the new Navara/Frontier midsize pickup, set to arrive in 2026. Unfortunately, this rugged truck will be exclusive to Latin American markets (LATAM). From the teaser image, it appears to be a heavily redesigned version of the old Navara, boasting an “evolved design,” upgraded infotainment, and a promising suite of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).

The successor of the global-spec Nissan Navara will be a different model, sharing its underpinnings with the Mitsubishi Triton. This one is described as an “all-new one-ton pickup” that will be launched in Australia in 2026.

Indian-Built SUV And Minivan

Nissan is gearing up to launch two new models in India, both of which will be produced at the company’s Chennai factory for domestic sales and exports. First up is a budget-friendly minivan with crossover styling, set to debut in 2025.

This will be followed by a five-seater SUV in 2026, which will be Nissan’s version of the Dacia/Renault Duster, complete with a redesigned front end. Additionally, the company has announced a five-seater SUV for select African markets, though it’s unclear if it will share the same design as the India-bound model.

In Nissan’s home market of Japan, the company will release a facelifted kei car in 2025, along with a new generation of a large minivan featuring the latest hybrid powertrain in 2026.

Ivan Espinosa, Nissan’s current chief planning officer and future CEO, had this to say:

“Over the next two years, we are excited to roll out an impressive lineup that will redefine the road! This includes the reimagined Nissan LEAF, and a daring new Micra EV. But that’s not all – we’re refreshing our range of SUVs to elevate the driving experience, and our next-generation e-POWER promises new levels of refinement and efficiency. We are committed to investing in products that embody the very best of Nissan. To our passionate fans and loyal owners around the world, I can assure you, this is just the beginning of an exciting journey ahead.”

Four Mazda Models Are Being Discontinued This Year, But One Could Return

  • Four Mazda models will reportedly be discontinued by the end of 2025.
  • The death row includes the crossovers, sedans, wagons and even a hatch.
  • Unsurprisingly, only the SUV is expected to receive a successor in the future.

Mazda’s future lineup is shaping up to be exciting, with a new generation of the popular CX-5 and a hybrid rotary-powered sports car in the works. But don’t get too attached to some of its current models, as several are being sent off to the great scrapyard of automotive history, with production scheduled to end before 2025 wraps up.

The cars on the chopping block include the Mazda2 supermini, the closely related CX-3 subcompact SUV, the Mazda6 sedan, and the fully electric MX-30 crossover.

The MX-30: A Quick Disappearance

First up is the MX-30, Mazda’s first-ever production electric vehicle, as reported by Creative Trend. It’s not exactly going out with a bang. Set to end production in March 2025, the battery-electric MX-30 never quite found its footing in the market. With a steep price tag and a range that barely made it past the corner store, it struggled to attract attention. And despite being relatively new—just five years old—the car won’t even get a mid-cycle update, let alone a second generation.

However, the rotary range-extender version of the MX-30, the e-SkyActiv R-EV, will live on for the time being, so don’t worry, rotary fans, there’s still a sliver of hope for you. But Mazda’s first attempt at an electric vehicle might be best remembered as an experiment that went a little too far off the rails.

Mazda2: The End of an Era (Maybe)

Next up is the aging Mazda2, which is reportedly nearing its end. The current generation of this small hatchback debuted in 2014 and received facelifts in 2019 and 2023. Its most recent update came in 2024, when it got a new infotainment system for the Japanese market. However, those updates don’t seem to be enough to keep it going, as Mazda is reportedly planning to phase it out before the end of 2025.

Sadly, there’s no word on a direct successor to Mazda’s most affordable model in Japan. The only clue is a trademark filing for the Mazda2e name, which might be used for a future entry-level electric vehicle.

It’s possible that Mazda will step away from the supermini segment for a few years, pushing buyers toward the upcoming small crossover (more on that later). However, European customers can still grab the Mazda2 Hybrid, which is essentially a rebadged version of the Toyota Yaris.

The CX-3: The SUV That Could Have Been

The Mazda CX-3, the subcompact SUV that’s been soldiering on mostly unchanged since 2014, will also meet its end in September 2025. Despite a facelift in 2018 and a handful of other tweaks over the years, the CX-3 has struggled to maintain relevance in an evolving market. It’s already been discontinued in North America and Europe, but it remains available in Japan and select Asian markets.

Luckily for Mazda fans, a successor of the CX-3 appears to be under development. The model has appeared in official teaser sketches earlier this year, revealing a compact footprint and fresh styling with a CX-5-inspired nose and a coupe-SUV stance. We also know that the new generation of the small SUV will be manufactured in Thailand, although it is not clear when it will debut and whether it will be available in Europe or Japan.

Mazda6: The Sedan That Was Just a Little Too Late

Lastly, we have the Mazda6 sedan, a long-time staple in Mazda’s lineup that is also ready to exit stage left. The current generation, introduced in 2012, has seen a couple of facelifts over the years but never managed to gain the traction it needed to keep up with shifting market trends. The Mazda6 said its goodbyes to North America in 2021, bid farewell to the UK in 2023, and was axed from Japan in 2024. Now, it’s also been dropped from the Australian market for failing to meet certain regulations.

But don’t mourn the Mazda6 just yet. While Mazda has shelved plans for a new internal combustion engine sedan, the fully electric 6e will serve as an indirect successor of the 6 in Europe and the UK. This Changan-based model is already available in China as the Mazda EZ-6, offering both range-extender and full EV powertrains.

Think Tesla’s 43% Drop Was Bad? Wait Until You See This Stellantis Brand’s European Sales

  • Lancia’s European sales plummeted by 73% in January and February compared to 2024.
  • Tesla, Smart, and Jaguar also struggled with significant sales declines to start 2025.
  • Sales of gasoline and diesel vehicles continue to fall while EV and hybrid sales surge.

Tesla has been dominating headlines lately, largely due to its plummeting sales in Europe and other global markets. But here’s the thing: it’s not just Elon Musk’s electric empire in trouble. Lancia is facing its own crisis, with sales in Europe dropping by a staggering 73% so far in 2025. This steep decline makes it clear that the so-called “rebirth” of the Italian brand is going to be anything but smooth.

According to official sales data for the EU, EFTA, and UK regions provided by the ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association), Lancia sold just 2,208 units in January and February 2025, a steep drop from 8,098 units during the same period last year. This decline is particularly striking considering the launch of a new generation of the Lancia Ypsilon supermini and the brand’s expansion outside Italy for the first time in years.

For a bit of perspective, the old Lancia Ypsilon—discontinued after 13 years—sold nearly four times more units in the first two months of last year than the all-new, shiny model did. To make matters worse, the former was only available in Italy, while the new Ypsilon has already expanded to markets like France, Spain, Belgium, and the Netherlands. A drop of that magnitude certainly raises some serious questions.

Lancia’s Price Tag Problem

So, why this massive dip in sales? Well, one of the biggest factors is likely the higher pricing on the new Ypsilon’s mild-hybrid and electric variants compared to the non-electrified predecessor – something we’ve also seen with Stellantis brands in North America as well.

For a brand that’s been absent from many European markets for so long, it’s not surprising that buyers might be reluctant to shell out more cash for a car that feels a bit… neglected. Competing with well-established supermini brands doesn’t exactly help Lancia’s case, either.

The Lancia Ypsilon has sold over 3 million units since the debut of the original in 1985.

Lancia is looking to rebound by opening 70 new showrooms across Europe by the end of 2025. Whether that’ll generate any real traction for the brand remains to be seen. The Ypsilon will eventually be joined by the Gamma flagship crossover in 2026, followed by a new version of the Delta hatchback in 2028.

Other Winners And Losers

Lancia isn’t the only one with a rough start to 2025. Alongside the 72.7% drop in Lancia’s sales, Tesla is also seeing a significant slump, with a 42.6% drop. Other brands experiencing notable sales declines include Smart (-55.4%), Jaguar (-53.4%), and Mitsubishi (-35.4%). Meanwhile, Stellantis brands like DS (-30.3%), Opel/Vauxhall (-27.2%), and Fiat (-26.9%) are all struggling. Porsche isn’t immune either, down 23.2% this year.

On the flip side, some brands are clearly having a moment. Alpine, for example, has seen a massive 137.8% sales increase, largely thanks to the launch of the A290 GT hot hatch. Cupra is also having a great year, up 42.3%, with 40,869 units sold, just shy of Seat’s 42,212 sales for the same period.

For Stellantis, Alfa Romeo is a bright spot with a 29.6% boost in sales, mostly thanks to the Junior subcompact SUV, which contributed 9,788 sales in just two months. Other companies enjoying positive results include Lexus (+32.2%), SAIC (+21.2%), and Renault (+18.5%). Volkswagen also saw a healthy 12% increase in sales, reaching 216,565 units. VW is currently the only brand with a double-digit market share in the EU, EFTA, and UK regions, holding steady at 11.1%.

Overall, the VW Group leads in Europe, having sold 525,346 units, up 4.3%. Stellantis follows with 310,091 sales, down 16.1%, while Renault Group (205,005 sales / +8.2%), Hyundai Group (156,526 sales / -5.5%), and Toyota Group (151,589 sales / -4.9%) round out the top five.

Europeans Love Hybrids And BEVs

On the powertrain front, Europeans are clearly embracing electrification. In the first two months of 2025, hybrid vehicles saw a significant jump, with 687,709 units sold, a 17.6% increase. EVs also continued their upward trajectory, with 330,584 units sold, marking a 31.4% increase.

Meanwhile, more traditional gasoline-powered cars saw a sharp decline, with sales dropping by 21.9% to 562,513 units. Diesel vehicles didn’t fare much better, falling by 27.5% to just 172,758 units.
