This Is Where Supercars And Exotics Meet Their Maker

The Middle East is home to an impressive array of supercars and exotic vehicles, which, unsurprisingly, sometimes meet unfortunate fates. These damaged cars often end up in junkyards, where they are dismantled for spare parts. Hagerty recently explored some of the vast automotive graveyards of Dubai and unearthed a few noteworthy discoveries, most notably, a wrecked example of the brand-new Lotus Eletre.

Lotus introduced its first fully electric SUV, the Eletre, in 2022, though deliveries didn’t officially begin until 2024. The example found in the junkyard doesn’t appear to have any obvious cosmetic damage, so those shiny yellow body panels might still be good for salvage. However, the air suspension has failed, causing the car to sit lower than usual, and the door handles are popped out, likely due to some internal issues.

While the specific details of the Lotus Eletre’s condition are unclear, it’s possible that it was involved in one of the flash floods reported in the refion, which could easily spell the end for any car, especially one with so much advanced electronics inside. Depending on how high the water reached, the electronics could be toast, and the cabin could have taken on some serious damage.

An Unexpected Collection of Exotics

This yellow Eletre is just one of many sporty and luxury vehicles that keep piling up in Dubai’s junkyards. Well-known automotive photographer Larry Chen, based in Los Angeles, recently toured one of these vast yards, showcasing a variety of damaged vehicles from brands like Bentley, Rolls-Royce, McLaren, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Aston Martin, and Maserati.

According to Chen, it was likely one of the most colorful junkyards he’s ever visited, thanks to the eye-catching color palettes found in high-end cars.

The video, shared on Hagerty’s YouTube channe, offers a closer look at the incredible variety of vehicles and their varying degrees of damage. As Chen pointed out, the junkyard is well-organized, with specific rooms dedicated to various car parts.

That’s good news for anyone hoping to salvage some components, because, as he noted, some parts can be eye-wateringly expensive. A set of carbon ceramic brakes, for example, could cost up to $50k when purchased new. The same applies for body panels, accessories, and mechanical components from high-end cars like the V12-powered Ferrari 812 Superfast.

A nearby junkyard also focuses on American muscle cars, from brands like Ford, Chevrolet, and Dodge, providing spare parts to meet the demand in that market.

Overall, Chen was impressed by the range of enthusiast vehicles found in the junkyard, a rare sight in many US-based yards. These types of cars, often worth far more than a standard junkyard find, tell an interesting story of how some of the world’s most coveted machines can end up discarded. Over the years, police forces have adopted vehicles from nearly every segment imaginable. While some divisions require fast pursuit cars, others need smaller, more nimble vehicles to maneuver through busy urban areas. The Greek police recently received 10 fully electric Fiat 500e units, now patrolling the narrow streets of Athens.

These EVs were gifted to the Greek police by DEI (Public Electric Power Corporation), which, despite sharing its name with the buzzword-heavy acronym for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, is actually just about ensuring your car stays charged, not that it’s inclusive of all power sources. Along with the cars, DEI also threw in 36 charging stations, proving they’re really invested in making sure the only thing running low in this partnership is the battery.

Naturally, the Fiat 500e now sports the classic Greek police livery, complete with iridescent blue decals on its white body and strobe lights atop the roof. The headlight graphics and hubcaps hint that this is the base-spec model, not the fully-loaded La Prima trim.

What is interesting, is that the procurement department chose the Fiat 500e 3+1 bodystyle, which features an additional rear-hinged door on the passenger side. While Fiat initially designed this asymmetrical layout for easier access to the backseat for young families, in this case, it may prove more useful for transporting suspects, provided they can squeeze into the tiny Fiat, of course.

The 500e police cars are equipped with the standard electric motor, delivering 117 horsepower (87 kW / 118 PS) and 220 Nm (162 lb-ft) of torque. This setup allows the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint in 9 seconds, which should be more than adequate for urban patrols. If performance were the top priority, however, the fleet might have included at least one Abarth 500e.

More importantly, the 42 kWh battery pack offers a WLTP range of 321 km (199 miles) between charges, or up to 460 km (286 miles) in urban environments. In our review of the 500e, we noticed that real-life range is closer to 260 km (162 miles), but even this will be more than enough for patrolling the city center of the Greek capital.

Not the Slowest Greek Police Car

Surprisingly, the Fiat 500e isn’t the smallest or slowest vehicle in the Greek police fleet. That dubious honor goes to the Citroen Ami, a heavy quadricycle that’s been cycling patrolling the streets of Chalki Island since late 2021, as part of a sustainable mobility initiative.

Beyond the electric vehicles, Greek police officers have access to a broad range of cars, from the Seat Leon and Hyundai i30 to the Nissan Qashqai, Kia Sportage, and Peugeot 308. They also have a variety of larger vehicles, including the Nissan Navara and Skoda Octavia.

Recent additions to the police fleet with a performance-focused character include the Hyundai i30 N and Cupra Leon VZ hot hatches, designed for performing highway pursuits and tackling illegal street racing.

Despite its role as the electric flagship for Fiat, the 500e has not been the sales success that Stellantis had hoped for. As a result, Fiat has shifted focus, moving away from an all-EV lineup and introducing a mild-hybrid version, the 500 Ibrida, which is expected to debut later this year. Additionally, Fiat has confirmed that a new generation of the 500 will arrive in 2032, with production set to take place at their Mirafiori plant in Italy.

Cybertruck Flips Over After Alleged Road Rage Attack

A Cybertruck driver recently found himself in a terrifying situation after what he claims was an aggressive move by another motorist on a California highway ended with his truck upside down. The incident occurred in broad daylight near Ukiah, and the entire event was captured by the Tesla’s onboard cameras.

The footage, later shared on YouTube by the Wham Baam Teslacam channel, shows how the crash unfolded. A black Ram 1500 overtakes the Cybertruck, then abruptly cuts into the right lane just ahead of it. Moments later, the Ram driver taps the brakes, prompting the Cybertruck driver to move left in an attempt to pass. That’s when things take a turn – literally.

The Ram swerves into the Tesla’s path, pulling off what appears to be an unintentional PIT maneuver that forces the Cybertruck off the highway. As it veers off the road, the slad-sided electric truck slams sideways into a ditch, causing it to roll over. While the truck lay upside down, its sensors detected the crash and automatically alerted emergency services. Fortunately, the driver wasn’t seriously injured, though he was taken to the hospital by ambulance after reporting back pain.

According to the Tesla owner, he had no prior interaction with the Ram driver, something he says is backed up by the footage he shared with police. After reviewing the video, the California Highway Patrol has reportedly charged the Ram driver with vehicular assault, though official confirmation from authorities has not been released publicly.

The aftermath wasn’t kind to the Tesla. The truck sustained heavy damage to its roof, wheels, suspension, and body panels. It later appeared on Copart, looking far worse for wear. Some parts may be salvageable, but the cost of repairing such a heavily damaged vehicle likely outweighs any benefit. The driver is presumably seeking reimbursement through his insurance provider.

As for motive, nothing has been officially confirmed. However, the incident brings to mind other recent reports of road rage or hostility directed at Tesla drivers. Unlike the usual vandalism or minor clashes, though, this sort of encounter could have ended far more dangerously. With any luck, the Ram driver, if found responsible, will think twice before acting on impulse behind the wheel.

Kia Tasman Isn’t Done Yet And Big Changes Are Already In Motion

Kia’s midsize truck, the Tasman, is just getting started and is expected to stick around for quite a while, according to a high-ranking company official. However, it won’t remain frozen in time. Along the way, it’ll see upgrades including, in all likelihood, a styling refresh and, more notably, hybrid and fully electric variants.

The update comes via Roland Rivero, General Manager of Product Planning at Kia Australia. Speaking with CarExpert, Rivero described the Tasman’s ladder-frame chassis as a “fairly modular platform” that can accommodate “numerous powertrains.”

Hybrid and EV Versions on the Table

Depending on the market, the Tasman is currently offered with gasoline and diesel engines, but electrified versions are on the horizon. Rivero confirmed that Kia is actively “studying and reviewing” both hybrid and fully electric variants, though he stopped short of committing to a specific timeline for their launch.

One possible setup involves pairing the turbocharged 2.5-liter gasoline engine that’s available in the Korean market with a self-charging hybrid system, like what Hyundai is doing with the latest Palisade. Such a move could position the Tasman to compete directly with electrified midsize trucks like the BYD Shark and Ford Ranger Plug-in Hybrid.

As for the fully electric Tasman, expect a dual-motor setup providing all-wheel drive. This version would go up against the zero-emission trucks being developed by Toyota and Isuzu, including electric versions of the Hilux and D-Max.

Kia’s local head of Product Planning said the Tasman’s lifecycle will follow the typical pattern for light commercial vehicles, lasting “anywhere from 8 to 12 years.” To keep demand strong over that span, Kia plans to update and refine the midsize truck in a variety of ways.

Weekender Concept Shows What’s Possible

Some of those future styling updates might take cues from the recently revealed Tasman Weekender concept, which debuted at the 2025 Seoul Mobility Show. While Rivero emphasized that the Weekender is “just a concept” for now, he acknowledged that it could influence future updates, saying there’s “plenty of opportunity to enhance the Tasman” throughout its run.

The concept gets wider, body-colored fenders, redesigned bumpers, a more pronounced hood, and chunkier tires over the production model. These could make their way into a tougher, off-road-oriented variant of the Tasman, a move in line with the growing popularity of factory-built rugged trucks, led by models like the Ford Ranger Raptor.

In any case, it appears that Kia has plenty of ideas about the future of the truck, enhancing its presence as a newcomer in this competitive segment. Until a facelift arrives, owners of the Tasman can rely on the numerous available accessories, tailored for different use-case scenarios.

Among these mechanically-linked cousins, Jeep, Citroen, Opel, and Peugeot each toss their hat into the ring with subtly different flavors, all aiming for the same buyers and the same wallets. On paper, they have more in common than not, but visually there’s enough variation to make a side-by-side design comparison worthwhile.

Thus, we lined them up and now it’s your turn to tell us which one you’d actually want in your driveway. Even if it’s theoretical since most of you won’t get the chance, as Europe is the only region where all of them are currently on sale.

The Compact Contenders

The contenders include the newly revealed Jeep Compass, Citroen C5 Aircross, Opel Grandland, and the Peugeot 3008 and 5008. In the future, they should be joined by the DS No7, which will replace the current DS7. While earlier generations of the European models rode on the PSA-era EMP2 platform, the Jeep is the newcomer to this shared architecture, having recently moved from its old FCA roots to the STLA Medium platform.

As mentioned, none of these SUVs are currently sold in the US. The Compass might eventually cross the Atlantic, but Jeep is still “assessing the situation,” which is just a polite way of saying “we’re waiting to see how messy the trade tariffs get” as the company has paused work at the Canadian plant it was supposed to build the North American version.

Same Platform, Different Personalities

All five SUVs ride on the same platform but feature different bodywork. The Peugeot 3008 and 5008 are the only ones that look like twins from the front, while the others keep their sheet metal to themselves. That gave designers enough freedom to inject some brand DNA, even if the proportions are dictated by the shared architecture.

Front-end design is where the Jeep leans hard into its off-road roots, with a squared-up face, seven-slot grille, and thick plastic cladding. The Citroen goes the other way, aiming for futuristic with split headlights and decorative intakes that do more looking than actually breathing.

Peugeot’s models take the sporty route, wearing slim headlights and sharp LED “claws” that stretch into the grille. Opel’s Grandland plays it conservative, wearing the brand’s “Vizor” face that’s more subtle, though definitely modern.

Side profiles offer more variety. Jeep stays on-brand with boxy fenders and trapezoidal arches, giving it the most “adventure-ready” stance. Peugeot gives the 3008 a coupe-style roofline, making it the swoopier of the bunch, while the 5008 keeps it upright for max cargo space. The Citroen C5 Aircross adds curves and quirky details, staying true to its contrarian reputation, while Opel again plays it safe. The Grandland’s shark-fin D-pillar is its one standout flourish.

Size Matters (Kind Of)

When it comes to dimensions, the Peugeot 5008 is the big boy of this comparison, measuring 4,791 mm (188.6 inches), placing it in Europe’s (mid-size) D-SUV territory with rivals like the Skoda Kodiaq and Toyota RAV4.

Citroen’s C5 Aircross and the Opel Grandland are nearly the same length, at around 4,652 mm (183.1 inches), which positions them squarely in the upper end of the C-SUV segment, roomy enough for families but still city-friendly. Bringing up the rear in length are the Compass and 3008, clocking in at 4,550 mm (179.1 inches) and 4,540 mm (178.7 inches) respectively. They’re compact, but not cramped.

Rear Design and Cabin Differences

From the back, the Citroen arguably stands out the most, thanks to LED taillights that jut out like sci-fi fins. The Peugeot 3008, again, plays the sporty card with a sloping roof and spoiler, and it shares its sharp taillights with the taller, boxier 5008.

Interestingly, the Grandland’s rear design is arguably its strongest angle, as was the case with the previous generation. And Jeep? The latest Compass finally brings something modern to the table, improving significantly on its outdated predecessor.

That brings us to the interior design, where things get surprisingly varied. Each SUV takes a different approach to the digital cockpit, offering its own interpretation of modern tech. The most distinctive setup belongs to Peugeot’s iCockpit, featuring a curved display, a compact steering wheel, and center console details that lean into a light sci-fi aesthetic.

Citroen claims the title for largest screen in any Stellantis vehicle, with a 13-inch portrait touchscreen perched on the dash, flanked by their signature plush “Advanced Comfort” seats. Opel’s cabin is similarly spacious, though the design is more reserved. Jeep adds some flair with metallic trim and unique textures, but keeps the layout simple and user-friendly.

Under the Hood: Shared DNA

All five SUVs share the same foundation, so there’s no need to dig too deep. They’re all built on the STLA Medium architecture and offer a range of powertrains for European buyers, including mild hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and fully electric options.

Entry-level versions come with a mild-hybrid setup built around a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine. The plug-in hybrids step things up with a larger 1.6-liter turbocharged engine, paired with a more powerful electric motor and a bigger battery pack. Fully electric models offer either single- or dual-motor configurations, along with two battery choices depending on range and performance needs.

BMW’s Baby M SUV Might Be Lurking Under This iX3

Update: With its world debut now confirmed for this September at the Munich Motor Show, BMW is putting the finishing touches on the new iX3. The electric SUV has been in development for quite some time, and the latest images from Nurburgring testing show the prototype fitted with what appear to be the finalized headlight and taillight designs.

One of the test vehicles caught by our spy photographers was fitted with wheels that resemble those from the Vision Neue Klasse sedan concept. It’s still unclear whether these are standard alloys or aero-style covers, but the more pronounced side skirts and bulkier front bumper point to this tester being the M Performance variant, similar to the electric iX M50 or the current gas-powered X3 M50

This sportier version of the iX3 is expected to feature a dual-motor setup and will probably retain the M50 badge. Beyond the upgraded powertrain and more aggressive exterior styling, it’s expected to feature an M-tuned chassis with a firmer, lower suspension and drive modes tailored specifically for performance.

Previously, our photographers also spotted a pre-production prototype of the upcoming BMW iX3 Neue Klasse SUV not long after it rolled off the line at the automaker’s plant in Hungary. The fully electric model is now undergoing final-stage development tests ahead of its planned market launch towards the end of 2025.

The BMW iX3 Neue Klasse made its spy debut in November 2023, but early prototypes featured provisional lighting units. The new prototype is fitted with the production headlights and taillights, revealing a modern LED lighting signature. This was the last missing piece of the puzzle, as the bodywork of the SUV has already been uncovered in recent patent drawings.

What’s Up With The Frunk?

The new prototype was also spotted with its hood open. While the BMW iX3 doesn’t appear to have a frunk, as the front space is currently packed with drivetrain hardware, this setup might just be a cover in both the literal and figurative sense, acting as a placeholder for testing. The final production model will in all likelihood include front storage, similar to what’s found in other EVs.

We can also see the iX3’s pop-out door handles, which are less futuristic than the fin-shaped solution of the Vision Neue Klasse X concept. Judging from earlier spy shots, these will likely find their way into the larger iX5.

The wheels of the prototype suggest that this is one of the lesser versions of the BMW iX3. Our spy photographers suggest that the wheel diameter of the production model will be between 18 inches and 22 inches depending on the trim. The larger size will likely be reserved for the performance-focused offering by BMW M.

Neue Klasse, First of Many

The new BMW iX3 will be the first production model to adopt the Neue Klasse styling language before it gets applied to the automaker’s entire range of combustion and electric models. The iX3 will be followed by the i3 sedan, the similarly-sized 3-Series, and the new generation of the X5/iX5, which are set to debut in the coming years.

Under the skin, the Neue Klasse platform supports a new generation of lighter and more efficient electric motors. The iX3 will launch with single and dual-motor configurations, with output expected to range from around 300 to 600 horsepower. It will also feature 800V electrical architecture for faster charging and house next-generation batteries that are 20% more energy-dense, boosting range and efficiency by up to 30%. In its top configuration, the iX3 could travel as far as 800 kilometers, or about 500 miles, on a full charge.

Series production of the Neue Klasse-based iX3 is scheduled to begin later in the second half of 2025.

Nissan’s New EV Embraces Its MINI Side

Nissan has several projects in the pipeline right now, and one of the more interesting ones is the fully electric Micra. A camouflaged prototype of the small hatchback was spotted testing ahead of its European market launch in 2026. The Micra will be manufactured by Renault, sharing its underpinnings with the upcoming R5 E-Tech.

While we’ve seen glimpses of the new Micra’s exterior design in official teasers over the past few years, the spy shots are our first real look at the model. The proportions, roof structure, and overall greenhouse seem to mirror the Renault version, but the bodywork has been completely reworked.

Design Influences and Unique Features

The round headlights of the Nissan Micra are similar to those on the Mini Cooper, which also has an electric variant. However, Nissan has thankfully put its own spin on things like body-colored inserts and a grille-less front end. The bumper features a single cooling intake, and it looks like the black accents from the teaser images are actually fully blocked off.

Other interesting design touches include the round LED taillights, hidden rear door handles, and futuristic four-spoke alloy wheels. The sub-4m long, five-door hatchback will also feature glossy black cladding around the wheel arches, keeping in line with the current trends in automotive design.

Powertrain and Battery

The Nissan Micra will ride on the AmpR Small platform, already used by the Renault 5 E-Tech and the Alpine A290 hot hatch. It’s expected to offer a choice between 40 kWh and 52 kWh battery packs, with the larger pack providing a range of over 400 km (250 miles).

In terms of power, the Micra could mirror the Renault 5’s options, with a single electric motor producing 94 hp (70 kW / 95 PS), 121 hp (90 kW / 122 PS), or 148 hp (110 kW / 150 PS). A future performance version of the Micra, partly inspired by the extreme Nissan Concept 20-23, might even borrow the 217 hp (160 kW / 220 PS) motor from the Alpine, though Nissan’s financial situation might put a damper on that idea, as a low-volume hot hatch would require a substantial investment.

Pricing and Availability

Given the Renault 5 E-Tech’s pricing, we can expect the electric Nissan Micra to start at around €25,000 (about $28,200 at current exchange rates) when it launches in Europe next year. Beyond the Micra, Nissan has more electric offerings in the pipeline for Europe, including a zero-emission version of the Juke and a new-generation Leaf crossover. There are also reports that the company is developing an even smaller and more affordable urban EV, based on the upcoming Renault Twingo E-Tech.

Despite these different drivetrains, the exterior remains identical across variants, BYD didn’t even tweak the wheel design for the sake of differentiation.

As suggested by its name, the BYD Sea Lion 06 is positioned under the Sea Lion 07, although the difference in size between them is quite small. More specifically, the 06 measures 4,810 mm (189.4 inches) long, which is only 20 mm (0.8 inches) shorter than the 07. Still, the 2,820 mm (111.0 inches) wheelbase of the 06 is a 110 mm (4.3 inches) shorter than that of the 07.

Even so, the Sea Lion 06 has a bigger footprint than rivals like the Tesla Model Y and the Genesis GV60, and its shape suggests it might be more suited to family duties than some of its sleeker competitors.

As for pricing, BYD is aiming squarely at the value segment. In China, the Sea Lion 06 is expected to land between ¥160,000 and ¥200,000, which translates to roughly $22,000 to $27,500. Whether this electrified SUV makes its way to markets outside China, such as Europe, remains to be seen.

New Jeep Compass Embraces Electrification With 375HP To Prove It

  • Jeep will launch the Compass with mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric powertrains.

Update: Stellantis has officially pulled the curtain back on the 2026 Compass in Europe. We’ve updated our article with all the new details and photos.

Jeep is setting its sights on a bigger, broader market with the next-generation Compass, a compact model that’s poised to become the brand’s most globally available vehicle yet. The redesigned Compass boasts a more rugged, modern look and has grown in nearly every dimension. It now sits on the new Stellantis platform and offers a variety of electrified powertrains, from mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid to fully electric versions.

On the outside, the new Compass adopts a more chiseled appearance. It takes design cues from both its smaller sibling, the Euro-market Avenger, and the larger Wagoneer S, sporting sharp fenders, crisp LED lights, and ultra-slim front intakes. The SUV’s stance is enhanced by boxy wheel arches and generous plastic cladding. Shorter front and rear overhangs give the Compass a more nimble, agile appearance, particularly when compared to its predecessor.

Additionally, the Compass benefits from an improved drag coefficient, thanks to aerodynamic tweaks like active grille shutters.

And because Jeep is all about that “nature-inspired” vibe, the new Compass comes in six colors that sound like they were plucked straight from a travel brochure. We’ve got Hawaii Green, Pacific Blue, Antarctica White, Amazonia Brown, Yosemite Grey, and Volcano Black.

Inside, Jeep has made a noticeable leap in both design and technology. The cockpit features a 10-inch display for the instrument cluster, paired with a large 16-inch infotainment screen. These are neatly arranged above a row of buttons and a rotary knob. The center console and dashboard are accented with aluminum-style finishes, and there’s plenty of storage space for your gear.

Powertrains and Platform

One of the key features of the new Jeep Compass is the STLA Medium architecture, shared with other Stellantis products like the Peugeot 3008/5008, the Opel Grandland, and the Citroen C5 Aircross.

The Compass is now longer, wider, and with a longer wheelbase. It measures 4,550 mm (179.1 inches) in length, 1,928 mm (75.9 inches) in width (+85 mm), and has a 160 mm (+6.2 inches) longer wheelbase at 2,795 mm (110.0 inches). This results in 55 mm (2.2 inches) more legroom, a 34-liter (1.2 cubic feet) front interior storage compartment, and a 45-liter (1.6 cubic feet) increase in boot capacity, now topping out at 550 liters (19.4 cubic feet).

The real news here, though, is the expanded engine range. The Compass will offer a variety of electrified powertrains, including e-Hybrid, e-Hybrid plug-in, and fully electric models. For markets outside Europe, non-electrified gasoline powertrains could still make an appearance, but for now, the emphasis is on electric. Both front- and all-wheel-drive variants will be available.

At launch in Europe, customers will have the choice of a 145-hp 48V Hybrid, a 195-hp Hybrid Plug-in, or three fully electric models. The electric options range from a 213-hp front-wheel drive version up to a beefy 375 hp in the all-wheel-drive version. To achieve that output in the AWD model, Jeep has developed a new, more powerful rear electric motor, specifically designed for the Compass, offering an additional 49 kW of peak power and up to 232 Nm of torque.

Charging and Range

When it comes to charging, the Compass is equipped with a 160 kW DC fast-charging solution, allowing it to go from 20% to 80% in just 30 minutes. It also features an onboard charger that supports up to 22 kW. As for range, the fully electric models can travel up to an impressive 650 km (404 miles) on the WLTP cycle.

In FWD form the new Compass offers a ground clearance of up to 200 mm, with a 20° approach angle, a 15° breakover angle, and a 26° departure angle. Jeep promises it’s more than capable of handling tough terrain, and it also boasts a water fording depth of up to 470 mm. All versions come standard with Selec-Terrain, delivering 360-degree protection similar to the Avenger.

The all-wheel-drive versions are even more capable, thanks to an enhanced design that boosts the approach angle to 27°, the breakover angle to 16°, and the departure angle to 31°. Ground clearance and water fording ability are also improved. Hill descent control comes standard on all-wheel-drive models.

First Edition and Availability

To kick things off, Jeep will offer the First Edition of the Compass, available for order now in Europe. Customers can choose between the 48V e-Hybrid with 145 hp or the fully electric FWD model with 213 hp and a 500 km (310-mile) driving range. Deliveries are expected to begin in Q4 of 2025.

Stellantis has confirmed that production of the new Compass will begin in Italy in late 2025. While North American models were originally slated to roll off the line in Canada starting in 2026, delays related to U.S. tariffs on imported vehicles have reportedly pushed back the launch for that market.

Toyota GR is on track to offer one of the most exciting sports car lineups among mainstream automakers, but it looks like none of them will be fully electric. Chairman Akio Toyoda made it clear that his definition of a sports car is “something with the smell of gasoline and a noisy engine,” which means electric powertrains are off the table for Gazoo Racing, at least for the near future.

Toyoda,  grandson of Toyota Motor Corp. founder Kiichiro Toyoda, who has earned the unofficial title of “master driver”, holds the final say on what makes a Lexus a Lexus and a Toyota a Toyota. Under his leadership, the Japanese automaker has undergone a transformation, becoming a brand that genuinely cares about driving enthusiasts.

He’s brought Toyota back to the top of motorsports while sprinkling some rally-car magic into production models like the GR Yaris and GR Corolla. With the upcoming debuts of an MR2 successor, a revived Celica, and a GR-branded supercar, Toyoda recently shared his thoughts on the future of performance EVs.

No Electric Dreams, For Now

In an interview with Auto News, Toyoda was asked whether he could imagine a future where Toyota builds an electric sports car or race car. His response was as classic as you’d expect: “There will always be people inside Toyota passionate about developing electric sports cars. But for me as the master driver, my definition of a sports car is something with the smell of gasoline and a noisy engine.”

These comments pretty much crush any hopes of seeing a production version of the electricToyota FT-Se concept from 2023, which many thought might preview a new generation of the discontinued MR2. Toyota has been keeping the MR2 revival rumors alive with a mid-engined GR Yaris prototype, but instead of an electric powertrain, it’s packing the upcoming turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

An Electric Sports Car Needs to Be Affordable

Despite his preference for gas-engines, Toyoda hasn’t completely closed the door on EVs. He conceded that if the right conditions come together, an electric sports car could eventually make sense. But there’s a catch: it has to be affordable. “Toyota is a mass-production brand, so we also need to think about affordability, even with BEVs,” he explained. “Once Toyota has the capacity to offer affordable BEVs, then maybe that’s a moment when I, as a master driver, will be introducing a BEV sports car.”

The master driver isn’t exactly sold on electric race cars, at least not yet. He pointed out that racing EVs are “not exciting,” mainly because they can’t even make it around the circuit for more than an hour. “The kind of races I enter are mostly endurance races, so with current BEVs, it’s not going to be a race of the cars. It’s a race of charging time or battery exchanges or something,” he told Auto News.

For these reasons, he’s handed off the task of developing EV race cars to the next master driver, saying it will be “their job” to tackle.

Speaking of a potential successor, Toyoda did admit that his son, Daisuke, is the better driver. Still, Akio believes he has the upper hand when it comes to the “seasoning” of production models. After honing his driving skills under chief test driver Naruse at the ripe age of 40, Toyoda says he’s eager to see what his son, who started much younger, will bring to the table. “I look forward to seeing what will happen with someone who started young like Daisuke,” he said.

Mercedes Won’t Let Its Cars Look Like Appliances On Wheels, Thinks This Concept Proves It

Mercedes is in the midst of a design evolution, aiming to unify the styling language across both its electric and combustion vehicles. Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer for all brands under the Mercedes-Benz Group, says the company is determined to avoid the dreaded “sea of sameness” that’s overtaking the automotive world and steer clear of producing “appliances on wheels”. Or at least, that’s the plan.

Speaking with Autocar at the Shanghai Auto Show, Wagener dropped a few breadcrumbs about what’s next for the brand’s design direction. “The worst part of new design trends is having no identity,” he said, likely referencing the wave of rather uninspiring, cookie-cutter EVs flooding the Chinese market right now.

Luxury Means More Than Just Getting From A to B

For Wagener, standing out is even more critical in the premium segment. He explained, “When it comes to luxury, you start a love affair with the car. You attach emotion to it. You don’t just want an appliance that gets you from A to B.” He defined luxury as something that’s desired, not needed, adding that Mercedes doesn’t aim to make “appliances on wheels.”

Instead, the brand will focus on communicating “respect” through design, something Wagener believes buyers inherently associate with the Mercedes-Benz name. He explained, “You deserve some respect. You’ve made something out of yourself and you’ve been successful in life, so you deserve some respect for that.”

A Glimpse of the Future: Mercedes Vision V Concept

Wagener pointed to the new Mercedes Vision V concept, which was revealed at the Shanghai Auto Show, as an embodiment of this design philosophy. The concept previews the next-generation Mercedes V-Class and is built on the new VAN.EA architecture. Its exterior features an illuminated grille, cutting-edge LEDs, and sculpted bodywork. Inside, it’s decked out with a 65-inch screen and a ridiculous 42 speakers in what Wagener describes as a “private lounge interior.”

As for the grille, Wagener stressed that it’s a critical part of the Vision V’s design. “The iconic signature grille that nobody else has is important,” he said. But he also made it clear that bigger isn’t always better.

“You see a lot of big grilles out there, and this alone is not necessary. Respect probably has to do with the sublime. When you look at buildings, churches, temples, they have to have a deeper meaning, and this Mercedes grille is probably the best known around the world, so it has a meaning that many people associate with a lot of things – and no other brand has that,” said Wagener .

A Unified Design for ICE and EV Models

Mercedes has long stated it wants to have a common styling language for electric and combustion models, abandoning the polarizing egg-shaped designs of the EQE and EQS lines. The new strategy has already been showcased by the G-Class and the new CLA, and will be followed by the upcoming GLC as well as the next generation of the E-Class and S-Class sedans.

“In the first generation, we did purpose design because it was special and people want to show they are driving electric cars, and to make them a bit different, more aerodynamic and futuristic-looking”, Wagener explained. The differentiation between EV and ICE no longer matters for buyers, so Mercedes will “definitely move away from that”.

Mercedes has pledged to introduce 17 new or refreshed EVs and 19 ICE models by 2027. This means that its designers will have plenty of opportunities to show us what they mean with “respect”. Hopefully, this will help the brand establish a strong identity not just against its homegrown premium rivals, like BMW and Audi, but also new ones coming from China.

Isuzu is stepping into the electric pickup game with a familiar face and a new heart. The company has officially unveiled the production version of its fully electric D-Max pickup, which is set to hit European roads in 2026.

While the exterior sticks closely to what buyers already know, underneath it promises a zero-emission alternative without sacrificing the rugged practicality the D-Max is known for. Fleets and private buyers looking to ditch diesel but keep their payloads will likely want to take a closer look.

Described as “the first production electric pickup in Europe to deliver full commercial capabilities,” the Isuzu D-Max EV will face off against rivals like the upcoming electric version of the next-generation Toyota Hilux.

Visually, there is little to separate the EV from its internal combustion siblings. Unlike the concept version shown last year, the production D-Max EV skips the closed-off grille treatment. Instead, exterior changes are subtle, limited mostly to EV-specific badging and the absence of tailpipes. The charging port has been tucked into the same spot where the fuel cap normally lives, maintaining a familiar layout for users.

For its debut, Isuzu dressed the D-Max EV in a one-off Norwegian Blue paint job, paired with black accents and matching 18-inch alloy wheels. The electric pickup will launch in two high-spec trim levels, with buyers able to choose between Extended Cab and Double Cab body styles.

Dual Electric Motors And 4WD

The D-Max EV runs on dual electric motors that generate a combined 188 hp (140 kW / 190 PS) and 325 Nm (240 lb-ft) of torque. That means it offers 27 hp (20 kW) more power than the diesel version, though it gives up 35 Nm (26 lb-ft) of torque in the trade. Power is delivered to all four wheels through a full-time four-wheel-drive system, with the Rough Terrain Mode feature carried over from the diesel model.

Performance figures include a 0 to 62 mph (0 to 100 km/h) sprint in 10.1 seconds and a top speed that nudges just over 80 mph (129 km/h). More importantly for truck buyers, the electric D-Max maintains serious working credentials, boasting a payload capacity of over 1,000 kg (2,205 lbs) and a towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes (7,716 lbs), which are on par with diesel midsize pickups. Off-road figures are equally robust, with a 600 mm (23.6 inch) wading depth and 210 mm (8.3 inch) of ground clearance.

Battery and Charging Details

A 66.9 kWh lithium-ion battery provides a WLTP-rated range of 263 km (163 miles). This figure might seem modest compared to smaller EVs, but it is in line with expectations for a midsize pickup carrying extra weight and size. Fast charging at up to 50 kW DC allows the battery to go from 20 to 80 percent charge in about one hour. Isuzu backs the battery with an 8-year or 100,000-mile (160,900 km) warranty.

The fully electric truck rides on a modified version of the ladder frame chassis found in the regular Isuzu D-Max. However, the rear suspension features a De-Dion setup instead of leaf springs, contributing to a more refined ride.

The Isuzu D-Max EV made its global debut at the 2025 Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham. Pre-sales for the UK market are expected to begin in the second half of the year, with first customer deliveries planned for March 2026. Isuzu has also confirmed that the electric truck will be offered in select mainland European markets, including Norway.

Citroen’s Funky Buggy Is Back With Gold Steelies And Tube Doors

Citroen has unveiled the facelifted Ami Buggy – a beach-friendly version of the urban EV designed for open-air driving. Unlike its predecessor which was offered as a limited edition, the new Ami Buggy is now part of the refreshed Ami lineup, ensuring greater availability.

The Ami Buggy is inspired by the concept from the 2024 Paris Auto Show, although some features such as the grippy tires and the LED bar didn’t make it to production. Of course, the EV inherits the redesigned front and rear ends of the regular Ami with round lightning units, and the decorative 2CV-style side gills.

The highlight of the Buggy is the absence of conventional doors, which have been replaced by black metal hoops mounted on hinges. The Wrangler-inspired setup comes with optional zipped door covers for rainy weather, and is combined with a retractable sunroof.

Other differences compared to the regular Ami is the sizeable roof spoiler, and the 14-inch steel wheels which are finished in gold. Unfortunately, the Khaki shade of the previous Ami Buggy is not featured in the new version.

The EV is also available in a flagship trim called Ami Buggy Palmeira. This one adds black and yellow decals on the wheel arches and the greenhouse, matching the yellow double-chevron emblems. It also gets yellow accents inside the cabin including the three storage boxes, bag hook, floor mats, door nets, and smartphone holder. Finally, buyers of the Palmeira get Andy – a little robot figuring with a bouncing head – mounted on the dashboard.

The Citroen Ami Buggy doesn’t get any performance or chassis upgrades over the standard Ami. The heavy quadricycle has a top speed of 45 km/h (28 mph) thanks to a single 8 hp electric motor. The carry-over 5.5 kWh battery pack offers a range of 75 km (47 miles), and can charge in 4 hours from a standard 220V socket.

A Growing Lineup

The lineup of the facelifted Ami also includes the Ami Cargo LCV and the Ami for All which is designed for wheelchair users. An LCV conversion available as an aftermarket accessory (Cargo Pack), creating up to 340 lt (12 cubic feet) of space inside the vehicle.

As for the regular version, Citroen offers three Color Packs – Spicy, Icy and Minty – for greater personalization. These can be installed by the owner, including colorful wheel covers, decal sets, and interior accents.

Orders for the updated Citroen Ami lineup will open on May 6th across Europe. Pricing starts at €7,990 ($9,100) for the Ami and from €8,390 ($9,500) for the Ami Color Pack. The more adventurous Citroen Ami Buggy is priced from €9,590 ($10,900), while the Palmeira flagship trim starts at €9,990 ($11,400). Since the launch of the original Ami in 2020, Citroen has sold 75,000 units in 18 markets.
