In many markets outside North America, the Toyota Hilux has cemented itself as one of the most popular choices in the pickup segment. Over decades, it has earned a reputation for rugged reliability and versatility. However, even icons need a refresh, and the current generation is long due for an overhaul.

A camouflaged prototype that was caught testing in Thailand and the recent trademark of the Hilux Travo moniker suggest that the next-gen truck is near the final stages of development. According to the latest reports, the new Hilux is expected to debut in the second half of 2025.

The spy shots, shared by the Thai website Headlighmag, show a white pickup with camouflage covering the front and rear ends. The middle portion appears largely unchanged from the current-generation Hilux, retaining the existing structure, roof, doors, and greenhouse design. The pictured model features a dual-cab body style, but it’s reasonable to expect single-cab and chassis-cab variants to remain in the lineup.

The front end has undergone a complete redesign, presenting a more aggressive stance. Slimmer headlights, seemingly connected by a trim piece, complement a boxier grille and sculpted side sections of the front bumper.

The fenders also appear updated, incorporating plastic cladding for a rugged aesthetic. At the rear, the truck sports a redesigned bed with angular taillights and integrated steps on the bumper, adding both style and functionality. While interior details are scarce, we can anticipate a revamped cabin with higher-quality materials, updated technology, and overall improvements in fit and finish.

A New Generation in the Works

Toyota has been tight lipped about the debut of the next generation Hilux, but all signs point to a heavily updated model rather than a clean-sheet design. This aligns with the brand’s approach for the Camry sedan and the upcoming RAV4 SUV.

In the same context, the new Hilux is expected to ride on an upgraded version of its predecessor’s tried-and-true IMV ladder-frame platform rather than using the more modern TNGA-F architecture found in the Tacoma and the Land Cruiser.

Despite the carry-over chassis, Toyota engineers will likely work on the suspension and steering setup, resulting in a more refined ride and better handling. The potential introduction of electric power steering could pave the way for a more sophisticated ADAS suite. Additionally, the Hilux may benefit from the inclusion of disc brakes on both axles across the lineup, further modernizing the truck’s capabilities.

As for powertrains, it’s likely the new Hilux will stick with the mild-hybrid 2.8-liter four-cylinder diesel already available in the outgoing model, alongside non-electrified gasoline and diesel options depending on the market. Additionally, Toyota has showcased prototypes with fully electric and hydrogen fuel-cell powertrains and has officially confirmed that a Hilux EV will go into production in Thailand by the end of 2025, most likely based on the next-generation model.

Name And Rivals

Another sign of things to come is the Hilux Travo trademark, which was filed on December 23, 2024, with Thailand’s Department of Intellectual Property (DIP). Naturally, this has stirred speculation among local media that the “Travo” name will serve as a suffix for the ninth-generation model in the region, following the example set by the eighth-gen Hilux Revo and the seventh-gen Hilux Vigo. However, in most other markets, the truck is simply known simply as the Hilux. No extra frills, just the truck people know and trust.

The current Hilux generation has been with us since 2015, staying relevant through a series of updates in 2017, 2020, and as recently as 2024. The latest revamp added a redesigned nose with a sculpted bumper and a modern grille, along with a mild-hybrid diesel, but the rest of the bodywork and the interior can’t hide the truck’s age, especially when compared to newer rivals.

Speaking of competitors, the Hilux is up against some serious heavyweights. The Ford Ranger, which debuted in 2021, is set to receive a mid-cycle update in 2025, keeping it fresh and highly competitive.

Other regional rivals include the Mitsubishi L200/Triton, Isuzu D-Max, Mazda BT-50, VW Amarok, the newly introduced Kia Tasman, and an ever-growing army of Chinese contenders like the GWM Cannon Ute and the BYD Shark. It’s clear that Toyota needs to bring its A-game with the next Hilux if it wants to maintain its spot at the top.

Rolls-Royce Sold More Spectre EVs Than Cullinan SUVs In Europe For 2024

Rolls-Royce has announced the sales results for 2024 alongside a £300 million ($373 million) investment for the expansion of the Bespoke and Coachbuilt divisions in their Goodwood facilities. The high-end carmaker also confirmed that their second EV model will launch in 2025.

The luxury brand sold 5,712 vehicles in 2024, making it its third most successful year behind 2023 (6,032 units) and 2022 (6,021 units). The sales decline is attributed to recent model changeovers, as 2024 marked the debut of the updated Ghost and Cullinan models.

Rolls-Royce didn’t announce the detailed sales numbers for each model, but said that the fully electric Spectre was its best-selling model in Europe, admitting it proved to be “even more popular than expected”.

In 2024, the Cullinan SUV topped worldwide sales as the most sought-after Rolls-Royce, followed by Spectre, Ghost, and Phantom. North America remained the largest market for the Goodwood-based brand.

New EV Coming In 2025

Rolls-Royce officially confirmed that the Spectre will be joined by a second EV model in 2025, but didn’t reveal any further information about its upcoming model.

According to recent reports, Rolls Royce is working on an electric SUV that is smaller than the Cullinan, and a fully electric sedan that will eventually replace the Phantom, although these were expected to arrive in 2027 and 2028 respectively.

Regardless of shape and size, the new EV will most likely ride on the Architecture of Luxury which underpins the entire Rolls-Royce lineup. Whether the new model will share the Spectre’s battery and electric drivetrain remains to be seen.

A Record Year For Bespoke

For Rolls-Royce, selling fewer cars isn’t a concern – it’s part of their exclusivity-driven strategy. In 2024, the average bespoke content value per vehicle rose by 10% compared to the previous year, achieving record highs.

The Middle East led global demand for Bespoke commissions, followed by North America and Europe. Among Rolls-Royce’s lineup, the Phantom Extended emerged as the top choice for personalization, surpassing the Spectre, which took second place.

£300 million Investment

The record-breaking performance of Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke division in 2024 has driven the company to commit over £300 million ($373 million) toward expanding its manufacturing facilities at the Home of Rolls-Royce.

This investment isn’t aimed at increasing production capacity but rather at providing the Bespoke and Coachbuilt divisions with enhanced space and freedom to focus on exclusive, tailor-made projects. Mazda might be doing just fine without a dedicated EV, but the Japanese automaker is now stepping up its electrification efforts in a big way. It has announced plans to build a new manufacturing facility in Japan focused exclusively on producing EV batteries that will power its first model on a . This move represents a major step forward in its electrification strategy, with the factory set to supply battery modules for the company’s first-ever EV designed on a dedicated electric vehicle platform.

The facility will be located in Iwakuni City, within Japan’s Yamaguchi Prefecture, and will feature Panasonic Energy as the primary supplier for its cylindrical battery modules. Once operational, the factory is expected to crank out enough battery packs to achieve an annual production capacity of 10 GWh

The cylindrical batteries will be used in a new model riding on Mazda’s first EV-dedicated architecture. The company didn’t set a date for the debut of the EV and hasn’t revealed any technical details. Earlier comments by the CEO, Masahiro Moro, suggest that the in-house development of the EV architecture will be completed by 2027.

Mazda promises this new foundation will deliver EVs with “advanced design, superior convenience, and extended driving ranges.”

In the meantime, Mazda isn’t sitting completely idle in the EV space. The automaker already offers fully electric models, including the Mazda MX-30 crossover, which first launched in 2019 (though it’s since been discontinued in North America). Built on a modified version of the SkyActiv platform—originally designed for combustion-powered models—the MX-30 represents Mazda’s initial steps into electrification.

More recently, Mazda launched the EZ-6 in China, available in both fully electric and range-extender variants. The midsize sedan is built on Changan-sourced underpinnings, which it shares with the Deepal/Shenlan SL03. The same platform-sharing approach is expected for the production version of the Mazda Arata EV Concept, anticipated in 2025 as a sibling to the Deepal SL07 SUV.

Looking ahead, Mazda is diving into a range of battery technologies beyond the Panasonic-sourced modules for its EVs. The automaker is developing high-density lithium-ion batteries in-house, to put them on PHEVs and EVs by 2030. Last but not least, the Mazda CEO has revealed they are also building a “very advanced research base” for solid-state battery technology.

Audi A6L E-tron Caught Stretching, Looks More Like A Proper Executive Sedan

  • Audi is ready to unveil a long-wheelbase version of the A6 E-Tron sedan.

If you are not a fan of the aerodynamic silhouette of the Audi A6 E-Tron, you might prefer the upcoming variant with a longer wheelbase and a stretched tail. We’re talking about the Audi A6L E-tron that made its first appearance in front of our spy photographers, ahead of its debut in China.

The fully electric sedan was photographed during winter testing in Northern Sweden. Just like the other long-wheelbase versions of Audi models, the A6L E-tron will be exclusively offered in the Chinese market.

The biggest difference with the standard A6 E-tron is the redesigned roofline, leading to a more pronounced volume at the back. The wheelbase is longer and the greenhouse has been tweaked behind the C-pillars, contributing to more balanced proportions.

The white prototype is dressed in camouflage wrap, but a closer look reveals a few more changes, including a wider bumper intake at the front. The covered grille could also sport a unique pattern, alongside a slightly simpler layout for the rear diffuser.

The long-wheelbase version of the electric sedan will follow the closely related Audi Q6L E-Tron that debuted at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show. The SUV introduced a few styling upgrades compared to the global-spec Q6 E-tron, alongside Chinese-specific infotainment and a bigger battery pack. The same features will most likely find their way into the A6L E-Tron.

As such, the PPE-based model is expected to be fitted with the SUV’s 107 kWh battery pack, resulting in a range of over 435 miles (700 km) in the CLTC cycle. As with the global version, the Chinese EV will likely offer a choice between single (RWD) and dual (AWD) electric motors.

The A6L E-tron will be produced at the Changchun plant, as part of the Audi-FAW joint venture. It will be the second PPE-based model to be manufactured in China, following the Audi Q6L E-tron that entered production in the same facilities in December 2024.

Originally launched in 2020, with the coupe-SUV variant following in 2022, the Enyaq lineup has been a key player in Skoda’s electrification strategy.

The most noticeable changes are at the front, where Skoda has outfitted the facelifted Enyaq models with a sleeker illuminated grille and new split headlights featuring LED Matrix technology. Dubbed the “Tech-Deck Face,” this updated design, combined with cleaner bumper intakes, gives the Enyaq a closer resemblance to the smaller Elroq SUV. The profile and rear design remain largely unchanged, preserving the Enyaq’s familiar silhouette.

While the updated styling is a win for aesthetics, it also comes with functional benefits. The Enyaq’s aerodynamic tweaks have brought its drag coefficient down to 0.245 cd (from 0.264 cd), while the coupe variant now boasts an even lower 0.229 cd (down from 0.240 cd), a figure that ranks as the most aerodynamic in Skoda’s lineup.

Tech Overhaul and Comfort Upgrades

Step inside the facelifted Enyaq, and you’ll find more standard tech and comfort features across the range. These include a 5-inch digital instrument cluster, a 13-inch infotainment display, heated seats and steering wheel, tri-zone climate control, wireless charging with cooling functionality, and an electric boot.

The driver-assistance suite has also been bolstered, now offering predictive adaptive cruise control and blind spot detection as standard. Remote park assist is available as an optional upgrade for those who want a bit of extra convenience. To align with modern sustainability trends, Skoda is also offering eco-friendly material options in the cabin.

Longer Range Thanks to Efficiency Gains

While the facelift retains the same 59 kWh and 77 kWh battery pack options, Skoda has managed to squeeze more range out of the Enyaq lineup, thanks to its improved aerodynamics. According to WLTP figures, the updated models now offer a range between 268–365 miles (431–587 km), a noticeable improvement over the pre-facelift range of 210–351 miles (340–565 km).

At launch, buyers can choose from three electric powertrain configurations. The base Enyaq 60 (RWD) now features a slightly more powerful motor, delivering 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS). Meanwhile, the Enyaq 85 (RWD) and Enyaq 85x (AWD) variants share a more robust 282 hp (210 kW / 286 PS) output, derived from single- and dual-motor setups, respectively.

The Enyaq vRS performance flagship is expected to join the lineup in the near future, most likely retaining the dual-motor powertrain with 335 hp (250 kW / 340 PS). Those looking for something more exciting can choose the Sportline trim which is available at launch with a different bodykit, fancier wheels, and sports suspension.

Pricing and Availability

Skoda will begin taking orders for the facelifted 2025 Enyaq and Enyaq Coupe in key European markets starting January 9. Pricing will kick off at around €44,000 ($45,300).

The updated list for 2025 includes 18 eligible EV and PHEV models, a drop from last year’s 22. To qualify for the federal tax credit, vehicles must be manufactured in North America, have a battery capacity of at least 7 kWh, and meet specific price caps: $55,000 for cars and $80,000 for trucks and SUVs. These criteria mean that not every shiny new EV on the block gets a ticket to the tax credit party.

Among Tesla’s lineup, the Cybertruck’s dual-motor variant squeaks under the $80,000 limit with a starting price of $79,990, alongside a more affordable single-motor version arriving later this year. However, the top-tier Cyberbeast isn’t invited to the tax-credit club due to its MSRP of $99,990. Other eligible Teslas include the Long Range and Performance trims of the Model 3 and Model Y, as well as the Model X AWD.

Who Else Made the Cut?

Beyond Tesla, a few other notable entries have joined the roster. New to the list are the 2025 Genesis Electrified GV70, US-built 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 9, and the facelifted 2026 Kia EV6 and EV9. Cybertruck competitors like the Ford F-150 Lightning (Flash, Lariat, and XLT trims) and Chevrolet Silverado EV (LT trim) are also included.

GM’s presence is strong, with offerings like the Cadillac Lyriq, Chevrolet Blazer EV, and Equinox EV making the list, along with the Acura ZDX and Honda Prologue, both built on GM platforms.

For plug-in hybrids, the list is short as just one model made the cut: the aging Chrysler Pacifica PHEV. It’s a far cry from the EV-heavy lineup that dominates the program today.

Who Missed Out?

Several previously eligible models have fallen off this year’s list, including the Volkswagen ID.4, Nissan Leaf, and Rivian’s R1T and R1S. Buyers eyeing these vehicles will need to dig a little deeper into their wallets, as the $7,500 incentive is no longer on the table for them.

Looking ahead, the federal EV tax credit program that was introduced in 2022 as part of Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, faces an uncertain future. Who Can Qualify for the Credit?

The credit is available to individuals and businesses. To qualify:

  • You must buy the vehicle for personal or business use, not for resale.
  • The vehicle must primarily be used in the U.S.

Are There Income Limits?

Yes, your modified adjusted gross income (AGI) must be below these thresholds:

  • $300,000 for married couples filing jointly.
  • $225,000 for heads of households.
  • $150,000 for single filers or others.

You can use your AGI from either the year you take delivery of the vehicle or the previous year, whichever is lower. Your modified AGI is calculated by taking the amount from line 11 of your Form 1040 and adding any foreign earned income (line 45 or 50 of Form 2555) or income excluded from gross income due to sources in Puerto Rico or American Samoa.

What Vehicles Qualify?

To qualify for the credit, vehicles must:

  • Have a battery capacity of at least 7 kWh.
  • Weigh under 14,000 pounds (gross vehicle weight rating).
  • Be made by a qualified manufacturer (except fuel cell vehicles, which don’t require this).
  • Be new, meaning it hasn’t been registered, titled, or previously used.
  • Meet final assembly requirements in North America (use the VIN Decoder tool on the Department of Energy’s website to verify).

For vehicles bought after January 1, 2024, the dealer must be registered with the IRS Energy Credits Online system.

How Much is the Credit Worth?

  • Up to $7,500 for vehicles meeting both the critical minerals and battery component sourcing requirements.

The Creta Electric will be offered with two battery options, with a capacity of 42 kWh or 51.4 kWh. The range figures are 390 km (242 miles) and 473 km (294 miles) respectively, measured under to the local ARAI protocols.

As reported by Autocar India, the battery can charge from 10-80 percent in 58 minutes using a DC charger, while a 10-100 percent charge takes 4 hours in a standard 11 kW AC wallbox. The SUV has a small frunk where owners can store the charging cables and other small items. As for the charging port, it is located behind the Hyundai emblem on the front bumper.

Inside, the Creta Electric gains a new steering wheel with a gear selector that appears to be sourced from the Ioniq 5. A knob on the center tunnel gives access to three driving modes – Eco, Normal, and Sport. The EV also benefits from new graphics for the digital cockpit that comprises dual 10.25-inch displays. Furthermore, there is a plug under the rear bench that can power any kind of electronic devices through the V2L function.

The Hyundai Creta Electric will compete with EV-dedicated rivals including the Suzuki eVitara, Mahindra BE 6, and Tata Curvv EV.

The electric SUV will be formally unveiled at the Bharat Mobility Show in India on January 17. At the moment it is not clear if Hyundai plans on offering it to other markets as well. The new model is the latest addition to Wuling’s Sunshine family of LCVs which has sold over 5.3 million units since 2002. The design of the Sunshine EV is inspired by Japanese vans, featuring a short nose, small wheels, and a tall square body with double rear sliding doors and a large tailgate.

The Cause: A Software Fumble

This glaring error originated from Cariad, a VW Group company that focuses on software, due to an error that occurred in the summer of 2024. An anonymous whistleblower used freely accessible software to dig up the sensitive information and promptly alerted Chaos Computer Club (CCC), Europe’s largest hacker association.

CCC wasted no time contacting Lower Saxony’s State Data Protection Officer, the Federal Ministry of the Interior, and other security bodies. They also gave VW Group and Cariad 30 days to address the issue before going public. According to CCC, Cariad’s technical team “responded quickly, thoroughly and responsibly”, blocking unauthorized access to its customers’ data.

This is not the first time such an incident involving a major automaker occurs, compromising the privacy of its customers. Last year, Toyota admitted a major data breach incident involving 2.15 million owners in Japan.

The CATL Bedrock Chassis has survived a demanding 120 km/h (75 mph) frontal collision against a pole without catching fire or exploding, setting (according to the company) new standards in the safety of future EVs.

The skateboard chassis integrates the battery cells, featuring a “three-dimensional biomimetic tortoise shell structure” and an “high-ductility energy-absorbing insulation film”. For its construction, CATL used submarine-grade hot-formed steel, aerospace-grade aluminum alloy, and multiple barrier structures, making it as rigid as possible.

Furthermore, the high-voltage circuit of the battery is being disconnected in 0.01 seconds after the impact, with the discharge being completed within 0.2 seconds.

Going above and beyond C-NCAP’s requirements

Thanks to its design, the Bedrock Chassis is capable of absorbing 85% of the vehicle’s collision energy, which marks a significant improvement compared to the 60% of a traditional chassis. This is important in collisions as demanding as the frontal pole crash test that simulates impact with trees, power poles, or animals.

According to CATL, the pole crash test at 120 km/h (75 mph) generates 21 times more energy compared to the 56 km/h (35 mph) full-width frontal impact test which is currently the standard in the C-NCAP (China New Car Assessment Program).

Besides the 120 km/h (75 mph) test, the battery cells have undergone high-speed sled impact tests at 60 km/h (37 mph), 90-degree bending tests, and sawing tests, proving their resilience into catching fire or exploding.

Modular design considerably shortens development times

The company claims that the Bedrock Chassis shortens the R&D cycle for new production models from 36 months to only 12-18 months. This was made possible by its modular design, with the chassis being decoupled from the upper body, allowing to to be used in multiple vehicle types. Furthermore, the platform is compatible with L3 and L4 autonomous driving, and is flexible in terms of software.

ICE Is Not Dead (Yet)

While the fully electric muscle car was the first to arrive, the most anticipated version of the new Dodge Charger is the one featuring the twin-turbo 3.0-liter Hurricane inline-six engine. The engine will initially be available in two power outputs, delivering 420 hp (313 kW / 426 PS) and 550 hp (410 kW / 558 PS).

“My brand new Cyberbeast is 3 days old and already having major issue after just one night at home – there’s oil all over the place from the back of the truck (maybe half a gallon per day),” the owner wrote in the post. “According to Tesla, they need to take it back in for service for at least a month or more. It looks like it’s losing drive train oil.”

The owner added: “The problem is, I haven’t even driven it once. What should I do? I think Tesla must buy it back and get me a new one. For now, I’m stuck without a truck driving a loaner Nissan they gave us and still have to make a payment! They won’t give me my money back only after they fix it give it back to me and then they can ask their legal department for a buy back… a nightmare”

Nio has finally launched the much-anticipated Firefly brand in China, which will be targeting the most affordable corner of the EV market. Its first model is a small electric hatchback with swappable batteries, aimed at global markets including Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.

Firefly EVs will be positioned below the Nio and Onvo in terms of size, features, and pricing. The goal of the brand is to make “small, electric high-end cars accessible to a broader audience”.

The urban hatchback is simply known as the Firefly. Responsible for its design is ex-BMW and Ford designer Kris Tomasson. The exterior has a few references to the discontinued Honda e, with a similar greenhouse, a black-finished roof, and matching pillars. The signature trait of the Firefly is the three-piece circular LED headlights and taillights that look like iPhone cameras.

Other highlights include the flush door handles, the six-spoke wheels, and the clean surfacing. According to Firefly, the plastic cladding on the lower part of the bodywork is made from a sustainable material. The company didn’t reveal the dimensions of the EV, which looks like a rival to the likes of the BYD Dolphin, Citroen e-C3, Fiat Grande Panda, and Renault 5.

The latest Chinese EV features a 92-liter (3.2 cubic feet) frunk with layered storage and a drainage function, which is larger than what you get in most EVs. This is combined with a boot that can reach up to 1,250 lt (44 cubic feet) when the rear seats are folded flat. There are no photos of the interior, but earlier spy shots revealed a minimalist dashboard with a Tesla-style infotainment touchscreen and a digital instrument cluster.

Firefly claims that the turning circle of 9.4 m (30.8 feet) and the “multi-scene automatic parking assist function” will make it easy to navigate the EV in tight urban areas.

The EV has been engineered to score five-star ratings on the C-NCAP and Euro-NCAP tests. This was made possible thanks to the extensive use of high-strength steel and aluminum comprising 83.4% of the body structure, double anti-collision beams in the front doors, and nine airbags as standard, and claims to offer the best torsional stiffness in its segment (35,700 Nm).

Details about the electric motors and battery pack have yet to be announced. However, we know that the latter will be swappable, although not compatible with the existing battery swapping stations of Nio and Onvo due to its smaller size.

The Tesla Model Y is preparing for what may be its most notable refresh since its 2019 debut. While the core design remains largely unchanged, this update—codenamed Project Juniper—promises to introduce just enough new features and tweaks to help the world’s best-selling EV stay ahead of the competition and maintain its global dominance.

Over the past month, numerous camouflaged prototypes of the refreshed Model Y, which will likely be marketed as a 2026MY, have been spotted in the United States, Europe, and Asia, adding fuel to rumors that production of the updated version could begin soon, starting in China. These sightings have offered glimpses of what Tesla has been working on to further refine its already popular SUV.

What’s New on the Outside?

The updated Model Y Juniper appears to take a page from the playbook of the Model 3 “Highland,” with a refreshed design that’s playing it safe. Judging by the camo-covered test cars, Tesla’s engineers have zeroed in on tweaking the front and rear ends while leaving the middle section untouched.

Fresh spy shots from Europe at the start of the new year offer the clearest look yet at the Model Y’s updated front end, showcasing split LED headlights and a more streamlined bumper design. A similar look was spotted on test vehicles in recent spy videos from California, hinting that the Model Y might embrace a distinctive aesthetic, setting it apart from the sharper, more minimalist design of its closely related sedan counterpart.

That said, these are still test vehicles, so it’s possible that some elements—like the split headlamp design—may not make it to production. Tesla has experimented with multiple front-end designs over the past year, with some prototypes featuring the split headlights and others without, so there’s still some mystery around the final look.

At the rear, heavy camouflage obscures much of the design, but slimmer taillights and fresh LED graphics are visible. A recent video posted by X (formerly Twitter) user Suppakit Phonorthong also shows a full-width lightbar stretching across the rear end, which aligns with earlier spy shots of a frosted-finish LED taillight bar. If this makes it to production, it could be one of the most noticeable design upgrades.

New Longer Six-Seater Variant for China

Tesla plans to introduce two versions of the refreshed Model Y. The standard five-seater model will remain available, along with an optional third-row configuration for two additional passengers. But specifically for the Chinese market, Tesla is reportedly working on a longer-wheelbase six-seater version, scheduled to debut in the fourth quarter of 2025. This version will cater to the market’s demand for more spacious family-oriented vehicles.

Interior Updates

Inside, the updated Model Y is expected to embrace an even more minimalist design by eliminating traditional wiper and turn signal stalks, along with the gear shifter. These controls will likely be replaced by touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel and the central touchscreen, just like the Model 3 ‘Highland’ facelift.

On the bright side, Tesla is introducing new features aimed at enhancing both comfort and functionality. The refreshed Model Y will feature a redesigned (and less toyish-looking) steering wheel, slimmer infotainment screen bezels, more supportive front seats with a cooling function, multi-color ambient lighting, and a new rear-seat touchscreen—similar to what we’ve seen in the Model 3 facelift.

More importantly, the EV will benefit from higher-quality materials inside the cabin and improved NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness), thanks to chassis and suspension upgrades. These enhancements will likely be accompanied by onboard technology updates as well.

What About Performance?

Mechanically, the Model Y’s battery and powertrain options are expected to carry over from the current version. However, Tesla might introduce a more powerful Model Y Performance variant with specifications similar to the updated Model 3 Performance, which would appeal to customers looking for more speed and excitement in their electric SUV.

Other carryover options will likely include the standard and long-range versions, available in either RWD or AWD dual-motor configurations.

When Will It Be Available?

According to reports from Chinese media, including Sina, series production of the refreshed Model Y “Juniper” is set to begin this month at Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory. This timeline aligns with Elon Musk’s earlier statement that the updated Model Y would not launch before the end of 2024.

In fact, some sources suggest that Tesla has already produced early prototypes in Shanghai as part of its preparations for full-scale production.

Should You Wait or Buy Now?

In the lead-up to the updated model’s release, Tesla has cut the price of the Model Y in China by an additional ¥10,000 ($1,370), dropping it to its lowest price ever. Malaysia’s Proton has just unveiled its first-ever EV, the e.MAS 7, an SUV that wants to stand out but doesn’t quite stick the landing. Beneath its Porsche styling cues and ambitious marketing, the e.MAS 7 is, at its core, a rebadged Geely Galaxy E5. It’s a straightforward exercise in badge engineering that doesn’t break new ground but does manage to look modern.

Let’s start with the basics. The Proton e.MAS 7 is a compact SUV that stretches 4,615 mm long (that’s 181.7 inches if you’re too cool for the metric system) and boasts a wheelbase of 2,750 mm (108.3 inches). If you’ve seen the Geely Galaxy, congratulations, you’ve already seen the e.MAS 7. The only visible differences are a Proton badge slapped onto the hood and the glaring absence of the Geely’s illuminated grille. Proton’s big EV debut is essentially the automotive equivalent of putting a new logo on a Word doc template and calling it “custom design.”

Porsche Vibes, but Make It Discount

The e.MAS 7and Galaxy twins borrow some pretty obvious Porsche styling cues. The full-width LED taillights? Yep, straight off a Cayenne. The greenhouse and surface sculpting? Also Cayenne-ish. The paint? Oh, you mean “Quartz Rose,” which just happens to look suspiciously like Porsche Macan EV’s Provence debut color? Totally a coincidence, we’re sure.

Proton also offers four other shades, including Platinum Silver, Turquoise Green, Slate Grey, and Lithium White, with an Indigo Blue interior, in case you’re into low-budget luxury cosplay.

Of course, the Geely Galaxy E5 and Proton e.MAS 7 aren’t the only Chinese-derived EVs borrowing heavily from Porsche’s design playbook. The taillights on the BYD Han sedan and Song L crossover look blatantly inspired by the Porsche Panamera and Cayenne Coupe, just like Geely’s own Galaxy E8 sedan.

Powertrain and Batteries

Back to Proton, the e.MAS 7 shares its underpinnings and specifications with its Geely twin. It rides on Geely’s Global Intelligent New Energy Architecture (GEA) and packs a single front-mounted electric motor producing 215 hp and 320 Nm of torque. It’ll hit 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.9 seconds, which is decent, making it the quickest Proton yet, but still firmly in “That’s fine, I guess” territory.

There are two options for the battery pack with a capacity of 49.52 kWh or 60.22 kWh, allowing WLTP ranges of 345 km (214 miles) or 410 km (255 miles) respectively. As reported by Paultan, Proton claims that the battery retains a health status of 90.5% after 921 complete cycles, which is the equivalent of 400,000 km (~250,000 miles)

Here’s where Proton is banking on the e.MAS 7 standing out—its price tag. The EV starts at RM109,800 ($24,400) and tops out at RM123,800 ($27,500). That’s significantly cheaper than its main rival, the BYD Atto 3, which starts at RM149,800 ($33,259), and is currently the best-selling EV in Malaysia.

In a decision that probably won’t shock anyone following the EV market, Stellantis has delayed the launch of its all-electric Ram 1500 REV yet again, this time pushing it all the way back to 2026. Why? They’re blaming “slowing industry demand” for electric trucks, which is a polite way of saying customers aren’t exactly lining up to trade their gas-guzzling trucks for battery-powered workhorses.

But don’t worry, Stellantis has a Plan B: the Ram 1500 Ramcharger, a range-extender version of the truck now scheduled to arrive in 2025 to help bridge the gap.

Unveiled in early 2023, the Ram 1500 REV was initially promised for a late 2024 market launch as the brand’s first electric offering. According to Stellantis, the decision to prioritize the range-extender version over the EV was driven by “overwhelming consumer interest,” the need to “maintain a competitive advantage in the technology,” and “slowing industry demand for half-ton BEV pickups.” In simpler terms, customers seem to favor the Ramcharger’s extended range, which also makes it less dependent on the still-developing charging infrastructure.

The Ramcharger runs on a 3.6-liter V6 engine that acts as a generator for the 92 kWh battery pack, offering a range of 690 miles (1,110 km), compared to the 500 miles (805 km) offered by the all-electric version. It’s also packing a bit more punch, delivering 663 hp (494 kW / 672 PS), slightly edging out the 1500 REV’s 654 hp (448 kW / 663 PS), though we doubt anyone would notice the difference.

Production of the Ram 1500 will “primarily” take place at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant in Michigan, covering both the electrified and traditional ICE versions.

Leadership Shake-Up

This shift in strategy coincides with a change in leadership for the Ram brand. Tim Kuniskis, a 32-year company veteran known for breathing life into Dodge with the Hellcat lineup, has returned to his post as CEO of Ram after retiring in June from his role overseeing both Ram and Dodge. He replaces Chris Feuell, following the fallout from Carlos Tavares’ resignation as Stellantis CEO. BYD, the company that’s already entered the world of supercars with the YangWang U9 capable of jumping (literally) and doing zero-to-sixty in sub-two seconds has now decided to give the world one more reason to side-eye Stuttgart: a Denza-branded electric sports car rumored to launch in 2025.

The teaser comes in the form of a camouflaged prototype that was spotted in China on a flatbed truck. The blurry Weibo snapshot shows a coupe with classic sports car proportions but missing vital bits like the headlights and rear bumper, which either weren’t ready or BYD decided to keep them a surprise. Think of it as a sneak peek at your dream car before it puts its pants on.

A BYD Sports Car? Blame Wolfgang Egger

Now, if you’re wondering who’s responsible for BYD’s glow-up from “budget EVs” to “supercar contender,” point your finger squarely at Wolfgang Egger. This is the guy who’s worked at Audi, Lamborghini, Alfa Romeo, and basically every design studio with a leather couch and espresso machine.

BYD didn’t reveal much in the way of technical details during the concept’s presentation, aside from confirming its fully electric nature. However, Car News China speculates that the production version could borrow the tri-motor powertrain from the Denza Z9. With a combined output of 952 hp (710 kW / 965 PS), this setup promises some seriously impressive performance.

Europe, You’re Next

What makes things more interesting is that the Denza-badged sports car won’t be exclusively available in China, as it could also be offered in Europe. Denza will make its debut in the Old Continent with the Z9 GT in 2025, and the electric sports car sounds like a great option for expanding its lineup.

The EV is expected to debut at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show in April, exactly one year after the concept. As reported by local media Autohome, pricing could start from around ¥300,000 (equal to around $41,200) in China, making it significantly more affordable than any variant of the Porsche 911 despite offering high levels of performance.

While automakers navigate shifting electrification strategies, the global electric vehicle market continues to grow steadily. November 2024 set yet another sales record, with 1.8 million EVs sold worldwide, bringing the year-to-date total to an impressive 15.2 million units.

According to market research firm Rho Motion, November marked the third consecutive month of record-breaking EV sales, with an additional 100,000 units sold compared to October’s previous high. This represents a sharp 32 percent leap from November 2023.

China Leads the Charge

Unsurprisingly, China continues to dominate the EV stage by a huge margin with an astonishing 1.3 million units sold in November, accounting for nearly 70 percent of global sales. Much of this growth came from rising demand for models produced by Geely, Tesla, and Changan, bolstered by China’s aggressive push toward electrification.

Between January and November 2024, China’s EV sales soared by 40 percent year-over-year, reaching a remarkable 9.7 million units and dwarfing sales in all other regions.

The global tally of 15.2 million EVs sold between January and November 2024 represents a 25 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Breaking this down, China was followed by the European Union, EFTA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland) and the UK at 2.7 million (-3%), the US and Canada at 1.6 million (+10%), and the rest of the world contributing 1.1 million (+25%).

Regional Gains and Setbacks

In Europe, major markets like Germany, France, and Italy are experiencing a slowdown, with year-to-date sales shrinking by 3 percent. However, the UK stands out as an exception, posting a 17 percent increase in sales thanks to stronger demand in the second half of 2024. Still, uncertainty looms as the UK government considers scaling back its EV mandate, citing feasibility concerns.

Across the Atlantic, the US and Canada have maintained a steady 10 percent increase in EV sales year-to-date, totaling 1.6 million units sold so far. Donald Trump’s recent election victory is expected to trigger a year-end rush for zero-emission vehicles, as buyers hurry to claim Biden-era tax credits before they risk being cut next year.

Charles Lester, Data Manager at Rho Motion, commented: “This quarter has picked up significantly for EV sales globally as we see record-breaking month after record-breaking month. However, the regional picture is somewhat uneven with Europe shrinking 3% this year so far, and once more China accounts for over two-thirds of the electric vehicles sold in November.”

Renault 5 Turbo 3E Is An Electric Hyper Hatch With Over 500 HP

Renault has unveiled the production version of the 2022 R5 Turbo 3E Concept, serving as a modern-day successor to the classic R5 Turbo I and II from the ’80s and the Clio V6 from the ’00s. The hyper hatch rides on a bespoke platform and features a fully electric RWD powertrain with over 500 hp.

The third iteration of the R5 Turbo homologation special has retro-futuristic styling, looking like a heavily redesigned restomod on steroids. It retains the signature boxy fender flares of the original, although here they are combined with oversized wheels shod in ultra-wide tires.

The exterior has evolved compared to the concept, adding a sleeker greenhouse and reworked aerodynamics. The pronounced bumpers and side skirts are finished in white, contrasting with the yellow bodywork and the black roof.

The LED headlights appear to be a modernized version of the classic R5, while the taillights are sourced from the new R5 E-Tech Electric. The charging port is hidden in one of the side intakes, which were designed to cool the electric powertrain.

Despite the resemblance, the R5 Turbo 3E is not mechanically related to the standard Renault 5, as it rides on a bespoke carbon monocoque chassis which is said to be “both lightweight and extremely stiff”.

The French pocket rocket is powered by two electric motors mounted in the rear wheels. With a combined output of over 500 hp (373 kW / 507 PS), the R5 Turbo 3E is the most powerful production model by Renault, promising a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in under 3.5 seconds.

Luca de Meo, Renault Group CEO, said that the R5 Turbo 3E is something for “only for the brave”, adding that “it’s going to be fun”. According to the company, “the Group is bringing the best of its skills and expertise to the development of this ultimate Renault brand icon”, likely hinting at Alpine’s involvement in the project.

Renault didn’t announce details about the production model’s availability and pricing, but Autocar reports it will arrive in 2026. Judging from the bespoke nature of the build, we expect it to be offered in limited numbers and at a high price.

The automaker offered a glimpse to the R5 Turbo 3E in the “Anatomy of a Comeback” documentary series that is available on Prime Video. The reveal, which you can watch in the video below, took place behind the closed doors of the design center.
