If You Thought The Star-Studded CLA Was Bad, Look At This Piece Of…Art

  • Mercedes has staged the U.S. debut of the 2026 CLA in New York and unveiled a new art car.
  • The latter was created in collaboration with Ice Spice and is the first of five one-off models.
  • The CLA will be launched in America as an EV, although a hybrid model will follow later.

Subaru stormed the New York Auto Show with a marshmallow and the Wagon Queen Family Truckster, but they shockingly didn’t have the ugliest car in the Big Apple. Quite the opposite as that honor went to this CLA art car, which was unveiled at Mercedes-Benz of Manhattan.

The first in a “Class of Creators” series, the car was made in collaboration with Ice Spice, who is an American rapper that is younger than the Spice Girls. While that probably just aged a lot of us, the four-time Grammy-nominated artist unveiled a “molten chrome” CLA with a diamond-encrusted Princess chain.

The resulting design makes the starry, but soulless CLA look like it’s melting on a hot summer day. However, the changes don’t stop there as the art car has been equipped with slanted wheels as well as tires covered in faux jewels. They’re joined by metallic flourishes and a familiar grille with a unique surround.

While the art car looks more trash than cash, four more are on the horizon. A Gustaf Westman version will be unveiled on May 22, while KidSuper will unveil theirs on June 28. They’ll be followed by art cars from Hot Wheels and League of Legends.

Meanwhile, the Real 2026 CLA Quietly Debuts

\\\\\\\\\\

Mercedes also staged the U.S. debut of the 2026 CLA in New York, although they barely talked about it. However, the European model debuted earlier this year with a streamlined design and a minimalist interior that can be equipped with an MBUX Superscreen. It consists of a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14-inch infotainment system, and a 14-inch front passenger display. These run the new Mercedes-Benz Operating System, which embraces AI as well as Google and Microsoft.

The CLA will be launched as an EV and Americans can expect two different options. The CLA 250+ with EQ Technology has a rear-mounted motor developing 268 hp (200 kW / 272 PS) and 247 lb-ft (335 Nm) of torque. It enables the model to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in approximately 6.6 seconds, hit a limited top speed of 130 mph (209 km/h), and have a WLTP range of 431-492 miles (694-792 km).

\\\\\\\\\\\\\

The CLA 350 4MATIC with EQ Technology is a notable upgrade as it has a dual-motor all-wheel drive system producing a combined output of 349 hp (260 kW / 354 PS) and 380 lb-ft (515 Nm) of torque. Thanks to the extra oomph and traction, 60 mph (96 km/h) comes in 4.8 seconds while the top speed remains unchanged. However, the range drops to 418-479 miles (672-771 km).

A Hybrid Option Is Coming Too

Mercedes also confirmed the U.S. will get a CLA with a 48-volt hybrid powertrain. Little is known about it, but the company has previously said it will have a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine, a 1.3 kWh battery, and an electric motor that is integrated into an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The hybrid is expected to be offered with two different outputs as well as front- and all-wheel drive – at least in Europe.

Electrified Sales Are Surging Globally But A Dark Cloud Is Gathering

  • Sales of electrified vehicles continue to rise around the world.
  • The latest sales figures lump together both BEV and PHEVs.
  • Electrified vehicle sales rose 16% in North America during Q1.

Electric vehicle sales may not have skyrocketed in 2024 like some had hoped, but 2025 is off to a much stronger start. New data shows that electrified vehicles are moving in record numbers across all major global markets. The momentum is clear, though looming policy changes, particularly cuts in subsidies and new tariffs under the Trump administration, could start to cool things down as the year progresses.

According to global sales data, about 4.1 million electrified vehicles, including both battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), were sold during the first quarter of the year. That’s a solid 29 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024, based on numbers from Rho Motion.

In North America, roughly half a million electrified vehicles were sold in the first quarter of this year, marking a 16 percent increase over the same period last year. The breakdown between EVs and PHEVs isn’t disclosed at the regional level, but earlier data from Cox Automotive and Kelley Blue Book shows that 296,227 pure electric vehicles were sold in the USA during Q1. That represents an 11.4 percent increase year over year.

Overall, demand for electrified vehicles continues to climb, though other global markets are seeing even sharper growth.

Electrified Sales Are Surging Globally But A Dark Cloud Is Gathering

Europe saw stronger growth, with about 900,000 electrified vehicles sold through January, February, and March. That’s a 22 percent increase overall. Battery electric vehicle sales alone rose by 27 percent, while plug-in hybrid growth was slower at 10 percent. Some countries stood out with particularly sharp gains, including Italy with a 64 percent jump, Germany up 34 percent, and the UK growing 42 percent.

China continues to lead as the largest individual nation of EVs and PHEVs. This year, no less than 2.4 million electrified vehicles have been sold in the country, up 36% from last year. The rest of the world has been lumped together in a single category, with sales increasing 27% to around 300,000 vehicles sold.

According to Rho Motion, roughly three-fifths of EV and PHEV models sold in the US are produced domestically, with the rest typically coming from Japan, Korea, and Mexico. As new tariffs go into effect, prices for these imported models are expected to rise. ICE vehicles will see price increases as well.

“This quarter, while turbulent, has seen a strong rate of growth globally for the EV market,” Rho Motion data manager Charles Lester said. “Some countries, such as the UK, had a record-breaking March as drivers continue to go electric. The removal of subsidies in France has had a shrinking effect on sales which are down 18%.”

Chinese EVs Banned From UK Military Sites Amid Fears They’re Watching Every Move

  • UK military staff are being advised not to park EVs with Chinese parts near sensitive sites.
  • Fears stem from Chinese laws granting government access to data collected by EV sensors.
  • The Defense Ministry wants “to mitigate any potential threats to national security from vehicles”.

Electric vehicles are becoming more advanced by the year, but their growing arsenal of sensors comes with growing concerns. Modern EVs are loaded with cameras, radar, and other tech that could, in theory, be used to collect sensitive data. With that in mind, UK military personnel have been quietly instructed not to park EVs containing Chinese parts near military facilities.

Officials have also been advised to avoid having sensitive conversations inside vehicles manufactured in China, citing fears of potential surveillance.

More: US President Says Chinese Cars Could Spy On Americans

According to UK legislation, the Chinese government has legal access to data collected by the cameras, sensors, and radar in locally built EVs. That access has raised concerns among UK officials about how this data might be used. These restrictions aren’t limited to brands based out of China, such as BYD, Great Wall Motors, MG, and Omoda. They also apply to any electric vehicle that incorporates Chinese-made components or technology.

Base Restrictions Reach the Ground

Citing insider sources, UK outlet The iPaper reports that personnel at RAF Wyton in Cambridgeshire have been told to park EVs with Chinese parts at least two miles away from key buildings. Similar restrictions are rumored to be in place at the Salisbury Plain military training area.

While these measures haven’t been officially announced, they’ve been hinted at in parliamentary discussions. According to the Daily Mail, Lord Coaker, Minister of State at the Ministry of Defense, said that the government is working with other departments to “understand and mitigate any potential threats to national security from vehicles.”

Chinese EVs Banned From UK Military Sites Amid Fears They’re Watching Every Move

Coaker was careful not to single out any one country, stating: “Our policies and procedures take account of the potential threats from all types of vehicle, not just those manufactured in China, and we have issued appropriate internal direction to all drivers and passengers. There are no centrally mandated policy restrictions on the movement of Chinese manufactured vehicles.”

A Push for Stricter Rules

He also acknowledged that some defense organizations may enforce stricter rules of their own, depending on the location, but added: “We do not provide specific details for security reasons.”

The Ministry of Defense did not confirm or deny the restrictions, offering a general statement: “Protecting national security is the foundation of everything we do. We have strict security procedures in place to ensure all sensitive information is protected.”

The military and government know the risks of Chinese espionage, but we cannot maintain our security with half-hearted measures.

We need to see a full pivot away from Chinese produced EVs in the British military and government fleets.

We know the risks, now we need to act fast… https://t.co/sbqNm1TJxi

— Alicia Kearns MP (@aliciakearns) April 17, 2025

Conservative Shadow Security Minister Alicia Kearns criticized what she sees as a lack of decisive action. “The military and government know the risks of Chinese espionage, but we cannot maintain our security with half-hearted measures,” she said. Kearns has called for a complete shift away from Chinese-made EVs in both government and military fleets.

These kinds of bans aren’t new. Over the past few years, China has implemented a similar restriction on Tesla vehicles, expanding it from military staff to government contractors, local authorities, highway operators, exhibition halls, and cultural centers. In that case, the concern was that the U.S. government could potentially access geographic and environmental data collected by Tesla.

Acura Dealer Sues Honda After ZDX Fails At 400 Miles And Turns Into A Brick

  • Dealer bought the Acura ZDX for $69,207 and is now suing Honda for damages.
  • The EV stopped charging after 400 miles, prompting a full battery replacement.
  • Dealer says Honda ignored support requests, leaving the SUV unusable for eight months.

Buying a brand-new car is supposed to bring excitement, not the slow-burning dread of a major failure before the odometer even hits four digits. But for one unlucky Acura ZDX owner, that sense of new-car bliss barely lasted 400 miles (643 km). That’s when things went south.

A customer from Criswell Acura in Annapolis, Maryland, was informed their 2024 Acura ZDX needed an entirely new battery pack. Now the dealership itself is suing American Honda Motor Company in an effort to recover its losses from the ordeal.

More: New Lawsuit Might Force Ford To Change Mustang Mach-E Door Handles

According to the lawsuit, Criswell Acura purchased the ZDX wholesale for $69,207 in May 2024, then sold it to a customer shortly after. But just 400 miles into ownership, the new owner discovered that the electric SUV could no longer fully charge. Once the problem was reported, the dealership followed Acura’s recommendation and ordered a replacement battery pack. While the customer waited, the situation worsened. The ZDX eventually stopped charging altogether, and even the doors became inoperable.

One Fix Leads to Another

The dealership installed the new battery pack, but that wasn’t the end of the problems. After the install, a rear wheel sensor started playing up, and after being replaced, an error code still appeared. Acura’s tech line told the dealer to install a new harness from its inventory. Despite following these instructions, the error code remained, Auto News reports.

Acura Dealer Sues Honda After ZDX Fails At 400 Miles And Turns Into A Brick

Criswell Acura claims that subsequent “requests for assistance from Honda have been virtually ignored. ” Nearly eight months later, the ZDX remains at the dealership, still undriveable. While the exact cause of the issues remains unknown, the dealer suspects the problems stem from the “result of bad design, manufacturer’s defect, installation, or pre-delivery damage.”

Under the terms of its dealer agreement, Honda is supposed to be responsible for any alleged manufacturing or design defects in Acura products. The lawsuit argues that this obligation hasn’t been met. The vehicle is “completely undriveable and unable to be repaired,” it states.

Criswell Acura is seeking damages for breach of contract and unjust enrichment. The dealer has been forced to take a total loss on the SUV, claims it has lost profits from the sale to a customer, paid licensing and registration fees, and incurred considerable repair costs.

The case highlights the potential risks dealers face as EVs become more complex, especially when support from the manufacturer falls short.

Cybertruck Isn’t Selling So Tesla Shifts Production To What Actually Sells

  • Tesla is quietly shifting Cybertruck workers to other model lines amid slow truck sales.
  • Internal cuts show multiple Cybertruck teams reduced by more than half at Texas.
  • It has delivered fewer than 50,000 units despite claims of over a 1 million reservations.

The Tesla Cybertruck was designed to turn heads, and it certainly does, but these days, it’s attracting the wrong kind of attention, and that’s showing up in the sales numbers. Blame it on the much higher-than-promised price, the shorter-than-promised range, or the string of vandalism incidents targeting owners. Whatever the cause, Tesla is reportedly adjusting production now that it has too many Cybertrucks and not enough buyers.

While Elon Musk might have once boasted about having over a million Cybertruck reservations, the brand has only sold around 50,000 as of March. That means that not only does it have a lot of them sitting around, but it also needs to reduce its production to control the Cybertruck inventory.

More: What Happened To Musk’s 1 Million Cybertruck Reservations?

According to Business Insider, Tesla has quietly reduced the Cybertruck production team by more than half. The report, which cites two employees familiar with the situation, says Tesla has been lowering its production targets since December 2024. Some staff have been reassigned to the Model Y line, where demand remains stronger. “It feels a lot like they’re filtering people out,” one worker said. “The parking lot keeps getting emptier.”

Cybertruck Isn’t Selling So Tesla Shifts Production To What Actually Sells

All of this seems to corroborate what we’re seeing Tesla do with its bevy of Cybertrucks. Just days ago, Carscoops reported that Tesla was using the pickup to advertise the new Model Y. It’s towing a Model Y behind a Cybertruck and using it as a rolling billboard. Perhaps the automaker is now recognizing the need to shift its focus onto more affordable models.

That could be one reason it recently introduced a new base-model version of the Cybertruck with rear-wheel drive only. Priced at a whopping $70,000, though, it’s far from the originally promised $39,990 price tag of the Cybertruck. Will this shift work out for Tesla? Only time will tell.

Rivian CEO Says Cheap EVs Mostly Suck And He’s Finally Doing Something About It

  • While Rivian builds all of its EVs on US shores, it’ll still feel the impacts of Trump’s tariffs.
  • RJ Scaringe believes the only way to grow EV sales is to offer customers more choice.
  • The company is readying two more affordable model lines known as the R2 and R3.

As the electric vehicle market continues to evolve, one thing has remained constant: Tesla’s commanding lead, even as it faces recent setbacks. That dominance, according to Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe, has less to do with brand loyalty and more to do with the lack of compelling alternatives, especially for buyers looking in the sub-$50,000 range.

But that may be about to change. Rivian’s upcoming R2 and R3 models are expected to come in below that price point, and with more automakers entering the space, consumers could soon have some real competition to consider

Rivian, much like Tesla in its early days, has taken the approach of launching with higher-end vehicles before branching into more affordable territory. In a recent interview with Fox Business, Scaringe emphasized that increasing consumer choice is key to growing EV adoption. More options, he said, will help drive the industry forward and increase EVs’ share of overall vehicle sales.

Read: Rivian Stacks Discounts Like Pancakes To Steal Tesla Owners After Q1 Sales Crash

“If you’re looking at buying an electric vehicle for under $50,000 today, there’s really very, very few highly compelling choices,” Scaringe said. “And for that reason, you’ve seen Tesla with very significant market share for a long time now, over 50% of the market share, and that’s actually a reflection of limited grade choices. And so what we need to see to go from 8% to 15 to 20 to eventually 100% of vehicle sales being electric, a lot of choice.”

More Models, More Buyers

Scaringe also noted that “choice” doesn’t just mean more brands offering EVs. It includes variety in styling, form factor, feature sets, and design. The broader and more diverse the lineup across the industry, the more likely consumers are to find something that fits their needs – and to leave internal combustion behind.

The Rivian CEO’s comments reflect a growing belief in the industry that EVs need to meet buyers where they are. While early adopters were often willing to pay a premium or compromise on certain features, mainstream customers are looking for affordability, practicality, and familiarity. Rivian’s push into sub-$50K territory could help shift that balance and bring more first-time EV buyers into the fold.

Tariff Troubles

The conversation with Fox also turned to trade policy, where Scaringe discussed the impact of tariffs introduced during the Trump administration. Although Rivian builds its vehicles in the United States, including motors, software, batteries, and electronics, it still depends on a complex international supply chain.

“One of the things with automotive is the supply chain is so complex, where we have hundreds of suppliers providing parts from, say, a headlight or a tow hook or tires or the structure under the skin here that are coming from not only a set of suppliers that supply to us, but those suppliers have suppliers, and then in turn, those suppliers have suppliers, so there’s tier two, tier three,” he said. “So in our case, it is a mix. Given the new environment from a tariff point of view, we’re working really hard to see what we can change, but they’re difficult to change.”

Rivian CEO Says Cheap EVs Mostly Suck And He’s Finally Doing Something About It

While Rivian may be less exposed than some of its competitors to US tariffs, it isn’t completely insulated. Scaringe also raised concerns about trade restrictions on rare earth elements, especially those processed in China. Though rare earths are mined in many regions, China controls a large share of the refining process, creating a chokepoint in the EV supply chain.

“When we think about the tariffs, of course the 25% auto tariff hits everybody,” Rivian’s boss added. “We do rely on a supply chain that across its tiers has a number of components that come from other countries and then, importantly, the trade restrictions and what we’re seeing in terms of rare earth metals out of China, that’s a real challenge for electric vehicles.”

Eighth Grader Killed in S.C. School Bus Tire Blowout, Crash

19 April 2025 at 00:24

A 13-year-old South Carolina middle school student is the first reported school bus passenger death of the 2024-2025 school year, based upon School Transportation News research.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol stated that at 1:45 p.m. Thursday, a 2021 Blue Bird school bus was traveling southbound on Interstate 77 when it traveled off the road to the right, struck a guardrail and overturned.

According to a statement from the Lexington School District 2, three school buses were transporting students home from a field trip just outside of Charlotte, North Carolina. A tire blew out on one of the school buses, causing the crash. That school bus was carrying three adults and 35 students, 21 of whom were injured, and one was killed.

Several of the injuries are reportedly “critical” but limited information was available at this report. According to local media outlets, the Chester County Coroner’s Office identified Jose Marie Gonzales Linares, an eighth grader at Pine Ridge Middle School, as the victim killed. STN reached out to the coroner’s office for more information but had yet to hear back at this writing.

An update to the district’s statement Friday noted a total of 35 students and four adults were taken to the hospital for medical evaluation, including a few passengers from the other two buses in the caravan. While those buses were not involved in the crash, they reportedly maneuvered around the overturned bus.

“A reunification site was set up nearby at Exit 48 for Pine Ridge Middle School families,” the school district stated. “Riders on all three buses cleared by EMS after a medical evaluation were taken to the reunification site for pickup.”

No information on how Linares died was provided at this report. The crash remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The incident has ignited increased conversations about equipping school buses with seatbelts. Currently, seven states require three-point, lap/shoulder seatbelts in school buses. South Carolina is not one of those states.

West Virginia School Bus Driver Accused of DUI, Accepts Guilty Plea

18 April 2025 at 17:58

A Calhoun County Schools bus driver who was accused of DUI after being involved in a rollover crash accepted a guilty plea agreement, reported WSAZ 3.

The incident reportedly occurred March 4 at approximately 6 p.m., when 54-year-old Jeffrey Brannon was transporting 19 students on Route 16. He ran off the road and struck a culvert, causing the school bus to tip over.

The article states that students on board the bus ranged in ages from 11 to 18. Three students suffered serious injuries. Two of the victims were air lifted from the scene, but their injuries were not considered to be life-threatening. Their current condition is unclear at this time. All other students were taken to local hospitals, where they were treated and released.

Brannon was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and child neglect. A preliminary breath test at the scene showed he had .161 percent blood alcohol level, which is  four times the legal limit for a commercial driver. Brannon’s bond was set at $250,000 and the first preliminary hearing was held March 14.

Calhoun County Schools Superintendent Michael Fitzwater told local media that all applicable laws will be followed and that Brannon will never operate another school bus.

In the Citrus Court of Calhoun County, Brannon entered a guilty plea April 10 to three counts of DUI causing serious bodily injury and 16 counts of child neglect, creating risk of serious bodily injury.

This Tiny Engine Turns EVs Into Gas Hybrids

  • Horse has unveiled a new powertrain that can turn EVs into ICE vehicles.
  • It combines an engine, electric motor, and transmission into a compact unit.
  • That unit is designed to replace a front-mounted motor on existing EVs.

Horse Powertrain isn’t exactly a household name, but that might be about to change. Backed by Renault, Geely, and Aramco, the company is positioning itself as a key player in the future of hybrid powertrains, particularly the kind that keep internal combustion alive just a little longer.

Given Aramco’s involvement, it’s no surprise the company is leaning into gasoline and hybrid systems. The Saudi oil giant isn’t exactly in the business of phasing out fossil fuels, so Horse’s strategy fits the narrative.

More: Renault And Geely’s Horse Powertrain Venture Is Keeping ICE Alive

We’re starting to learn more about them as Horse will use the Shanghai Auto Show to unveil a hybrid powertrain concept. It’s designed to keep that oil money flowing by hybridizing electric vehicle platforms with “minimal modifications.”

Sarcasm aside, this could prove useful as a number of automakers misjudged electric vehicle adoption as they were expecting a fast and smooth transition to EVs. That certainly hasn’t happened, forcing companies to axe models and walk back their EV-only plans.

A Hybrid for the EV Age

Getting back to the powertrain, it’s known as the Future Hybrid Concept and it combines an internal combustion engine, an electric motor, and a transmission into a single, compact unit. Horse says it will be able to fit into existing electric vehicle platforms, enabling automakers to “meet changing customer demand.” It also promises to eliminate the need for multiple platforms and production lines.

\\\\\\

The company didn’t go into many specifics, but said the powertrain has been designed to replace front-mounted motors on EVs. They went on to say the powertrain bolts directly to the vehicle’s subframe and only requires a few tweaks to make an EV into a hybrid.

The powertrain is designed to work anywhere in the world and is envisioned to support a wide range of fuels. This includes gasoline, E85, M100 methanol, and synthetic fuels.

CEO Matias Giannini said, “For over a decade it looked like battery electric vehicles were the only path to net zero, and OEMs planned accordingly. However, we’re now shifting towards a technology-neutral world, with different markets and applications each pursuing their own sustainable mobility journey.” He added their concept solves this problem and allows “OEMs to offer powertrain diversity with minimal disruption to production process and resource expenditure.”

Tesla Desperate To Clear Cybertruck Inventory With Huge Discounts And Perks

  • Tesla is offering up to $11,990 off many Cybertruck models in the United States.
  • Some discounted models also come with lifetime free Supercharging and FSD Beta.
  • Canadian buyers are getting similar discounts up to CAD $16,590 on select models.

If you want to make it painfully obvious that public opinion doesn’t faze you, there’s one simple way to do it: drive a Cybertruck. Now, for those in the market, Tesla is making it a little bit easier to take that leap with a range of discounted vehicles. And it’s not just about slicing prices. Some of these deals include lifetime access to Supercharging and Full Self-Driving, adding value to the package.

It’s no secret that Tesla has struggled to sell the Cybertruck at the rate it hoped it would. Elon Musk claimed it had over 1 million reservations. As of earlier this year, it appears it’s converted under 50,000 of those reservations to sales, though.

Read: Tesla’s 15% Sales Crash In California Could Signal A Bigger EV Crisis

For one thing, it’s far more expensive than initially promised. Sure, inflation has something to do with that, but even according to that metric, it should cost tens of thousands less. Maybe that’s one more reason why Tesla just put steep discounts on it. Right now, American customers can get the 2024 Cyberbeast Foundation Series for $11,990 off MSRP. Along with that, Tesla is throwing in free lifetime access to its Supercharger network.

Tesla Desperate To Clear Cybertruck Inventory With Huge Discounts And Perks

Here’s perhaps the most interesting part, though. It’s not just the top-of-the-range, year-old Cybertruck that is on sale. The standard 2024 AWD Cybertruck is also available with a similar discount. That makes it $89,990, and it still benefits from lifetime Supercharging and, in some cases, these trucks already come with Full Self-Driving (Supervised).

Granted, you’re getting a 2024 model while we’re already well into 2025, but Tesla isn’t a conventional automaker. There are no dramatic, huge updates from one year to the next. According to DriveTeslaCanada, Canadian buyers can also take advantage of similar deals. Tesla is currently offering CA $16,590 off the Cyberbeast and CA $13,790 off the AWD Cybertruck in Canada.

Inventory Snapshot: What’s Available Now?

At the time of writing, Tesla lists just under 4,500 Cybertrucks in inventory across the United States, including both new and demo units. That number is subject to change, of course. In Canada, availability is much lower, with only 72 trucks currently listed.

Put all of the side conversations away, and this doesn’t seem like too bad of a deal. They’re especially attractive for those who don’t qualify for tax credits or who are already considering buying a Cyberbeast. Why not get one with a steep discount and free Supercharging for life?

The only catch is that you’ll be piloting one of the most divisive vehicles on the planet, and Tesla doesn’t have much it can do if your truck becomes the target of someone else’s anger.

New Nissan Leaf Adds Serious Range But Still Misses A Key Feature

  • The current Nissan Leaf tops out at a measly 212 miles of range in SV Plus guise.
  • Nissan’s new Leaf will morph into a crossover, and it will go on sale globally next year.
  • Only a single-motor version of the Leaf will be offered, meaning there won’t be AWD.

Electric vehicles have come a long way since the Nissan Leaf first rolled onto the scene as the first mass-produced EV. Back then, it was a trailblazer. Today, it’s starting to feel like a relic. With new automakers crowding the EV space and established brands launching models that outperform the Leaf in nearly every way, Nissan’s once-groundbreaking EV is clearly overdue for a major refresh. Fortunately, a next-generation Leaf is on the horizon, and it’s promising to be much better.

Read: All The New Nissan Models Arriving By 2027, From Sentra To Frontier

The new-generation Nissan Leaf will transition into a crossover, taking design inspiration from the Chill-Out Concept. That means a more spacious cabin, a fresh look, and a big step forward in technology. Perhaps most importantly, Nissan plans to give the new model a much longer, more practical driving range. But how much longer?

A Major Range Boost

Speaking with Car and Driver at the New York Auto Show, Nissan senior vice president and chief planning officer Ponz Pandikuthira revealed it’ll have a driving range of over 300 miles (482 km). Like the current Leaf, the new model will probably be offered with different battery pack sizes, and this range figure may only be for the long-range version.

Still, the quoted “over 300 miles” of range is a healthy amount more than the peak 212 miles (341 km) offered by the current Leaf SV Plus. The driving range of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 varies between 245 miles (394 km) and 318 miles (512 km), depending on configuration, so the Leaf should land somewhere in this region.

New Nissan Leaf Adds Serious Range But Still Misses A Key Feature
Baldauf

Nissan is also promising faster charging capabilities and will equip the new Leaf with a standard NACS port. One notable omission, though, is all-wheel drive. Nissan says there won’t be a dual-motor version, so front-wheel drive will remain the only option for now.

Spy shots of the 2026 Leaf testing last year give us a hint of what’s coming. The new model sits higher than the current version, emphasizing its crossover shift, but it will still be smaller than the Nissan Ariya. Interior details haven’t been revealed yet, but expect it to follow the lead of other new Nissan models, likely featuring a digital instrument cluster and a large central infotainment display.

Ferrari Elettrica Coming In October After Years Of Development

  • Ferrari’s long-awaited EV will be built at its new e-building plant in Italy.
  • The Elettrica will adopt an intriguing hatchback/crossover design.
  • Thanks to spy videos, we’ve heard the new EV’s sound reproduction device.

This year will be an important one for Ferrari. Not only could it enjoy some success in Formula 1, but it will also unveil its first EV. While the idea of an electric car from Ferrari may rub plenty of people the wrong way, the groundwork for the car has been laid for many years, and it’ll be shown to the world at its Capital Markets Day on October 9.

So far, we have spotted the Ferrari EV testing on a handful of occasions, but Maranello has remained tight-lipped about it. While speaking during the company’s recent annual shareholders’ meeting, both Ferrari’s chairman John Elkann and CEO Benedetto Vigna referred to the model as the Ferrari Elettrica and said the car has been years in the making.

“Electrification has been a path that we’ve been pursuing now for decades, starting in Formula One and then from our race cars to our sports cars,” Ferrari Chairman John Elkann said during the company’s annual shareholders’ meeting, according to Reuters. “We are very excited about unveiling the Ferrari Elettrica (electric)”.

Elkann also emphasized the company’s commitment to keeping its innovation in-house even with EVs. “Now, we can also claim that all our key electric components are developed and handcrafted in Maranello,” he said.

It’s unclear if the Elettrica name will stick for production, but some think there’s a good chance it will. After all, Ferrari isn’t a stranger to using very literal Italian words in the names of its vehicles, just like it’s done with the new 12Cilindri.

To get ready to build its first EV, Ferrari has ramped up its investments in electrification. In April 2024, it opened its new E-Cells Lab with the University of Bologna and NXP. This research center has been created to enhance the automaker’s knowledge of materials and the “chemical and physical properties of lithium cells”. It says it has filed 200 battery-related patents in the past year.

In June last year, it also opened its e-building, which is where the next generation of Ferrari cars will be built. Purists will be pleased to know that Ferrari remains as Italian as ever, and this will not change with the Elettrica. Indeed, the brand says all of its “battery modules, electric axles, inverters, and electric engines are developed and handcrafted in Maranello.”

Ferrari’s EV will not be positioned as an out-and-out sports car. Instead, spy shots of test mules have shown it could take the shape of a hatchback-like crossover complete with four doors. It is also shaping up to feature a trick “sound reproduction device” that the company patented back in 2023, allowing it to mimic the soundtrack of an ICE powertrain.

Mazda’s New Electrified SUV Has A Giant Display And A 100-Inch HUD

  • The Mazda EZ-60 shares its platform with the Deepal S07 from Changan.
  • It will be offered in both pure EV and range-extender EV powertrains.
  • Interior packs six screens including a 26.5-inch display and 100-inch HUD.

Update: Mazda has released more details about its new Chinese-market EZ-60, which will also be sold globally – just not in the US. In Europe and other regions, it will likely go by the name CX-6e. For the first time, we’re getting a look inside the compact SUV. Check out the updated article below for the full breakdown.

Mazda has been playing catch-up in the EV world, but now it’s showing a bit more of its hand. A few days ago, the company revealed the first official images of the EZ-60, a fully electric SUV aimed squarely at the Tesla Model Y and other players in the segment. Thanks to new information from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, we’re getting a more complete picture of what to expect, including confirmation that a range-extender variant is on the way.

Read: Mazda’s Model Y Fighter Is Here But America Isn’t Getting It

While Mazda continues to produce strong internal combustion models and even set a US sales record last year, its electric efforts haven’t exactly impressed. The MX-30, the brand’s first EV, was limited by high pricing and a frustratingly short range, making it an expected but still disappointing flop in the States.

That puts a lot of weight on the shoulders of the EZ-60, which represents Mazda’s next serious push into the global EV market. Outside of China, including Europe, the compact crossover will be sold under a different name, the CX-6e, but the mission remains the same.

Sharp Looks

\\\\

The design of the new EV takes inspiration from last year’s Arata concept, and while it’s clearly identifiable as a Mazda, it looks much more menacing than any other SUV currently in the brand’s range. The signature grille shape has been retained, although the front end now sports slim LED DRLs and an LED strip running beneath the faux grille. The Mazda logo also lights up for some extra visual drama.

According to the newly released specs, the EZ-60 measures 4,850 mm (190.9 inches) in length, 1,935 mm (76.1 inches) in width, and 1,620 mm (63.7 inches) in height. Its wheelbase stretches 2,902 mm (114.2 inches). For reference, the Tesla Model Y is slightly smaller in most dimensions, coming in at 4,790 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, and 1,624 mm tall, with a 2,890 mm wheelbase. The EZ-60 is also closely matched in size to the Zeekr 7X, one of China’s more promising new EVs expected to reach global markets soon.

We also now know the EZ-60’s curb weight falls between 1,992 and 2,048 kg (4,391 to 4,515 lbs), making it heavier than a base Chevy Silverado with the 8-foot box and nearly as heavy as an entry-level Ford F-150. For context, Mazda’s own CX-50 and CX-5 weigh in at 3,741 and 3,679 lbs, respectively.

Chinese Bones

Built on the EPA1 modular platform (also used by Changan’s Deepal S07), the EZ-60 will come in both full EV and range-extender versions. Mazda hasn’t released full specs for the battery-only model yet, but the range-extender variant has been detailed.

It uses a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine that functions solely as a generator, supplying power to a 31.7 kWh battery. That battery, in turn, powers a 255 hp electric motor driving the rear axle. While Mazda hasn’t shared range figures for the EZ-60, the related EZ-6 sedan R-EV offers up to 99 miles (160 km) of electric-only range, and up to 808 miles (1,300 km) when the engine is used to recharge the battery.

Inside: Screens, Screens, and More Screens

\\\\\\\\\\

Moving to the interior, the biggest surprise is the dashboard. Despite its close ties to Mazda’s local EZ-6 sedan, which will be sold in Europe as the 6e, the EZ-60 features a massive 26.5-inch 5K display that spans the entire width of the dash. Unlike other setups that combine multiple screens under a single pane of glass, this is a single, uninterrupted panel.

If that’s not enough display real estate, there’s also a 100-inch augmented reality heads-up display (AR-HUD) that projects key driving information onto the windshield. On the downside, Mazda seems to have removed physical controls from the center console altogether, taking a cue from Tesla’s minimalist approach.

More: 2026 Mazda 6e EV Debuts In Europe To Battle The Tesla Model 3

As you might expect, the EZ-60 is loaded with tech. In total, the cabin features six screens, including streaming media rearview mirrors on both sides and a dedicated control screen for rear passengers. It’s a departure from Mazda’s typically restrained interior design, but that’s to be expected from a model primarily aimed at competing in the tech-forward Chinese market.

Mazda also confirmed a few comfort and convenience features, such as heated and ventilated seats for both front and rear passengers, and a 23-speaker sound system. Despite the tech overload, the company didn’t forget about utility. There are 20 storage compartments throughout the vehicle, along with a modest 350-liter rear trunk that expands to 2,036 liters with the seats folded down. A 126-liter front trunk adds extra practicality.

Additional reporting John Halas

Correction: A previous version of this article listed the curb weight as 2,590 kg (5,709 pounds), which appears to be the gross vehicle weight. The correct curb weight, according to the spec sheet, is between 1,992 and 2,048 kg (4,391 to 4,515 pounds). We apologize for the error.

PERC Celebrates Earth Day, Propane’s Role in Clean, Resilient Fleets

By: STN
15 April 2025 at 21:14

RICHMOND, Va. – This Earth Day, the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) is highlighting propane autogas and renewable propane as key solutions for cutting emissions and delivering reliable energy amid global sustainability efforts. As a safe, clean, and readily available energy source that produces 52 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than the electric grid, propane supports both the environment and communities striving for more sustainable, resilient energy.

“Too often the energy conversation turns toward a choice between sustainability and reliability; propane proves that you don’t have to choose,” said Tucker Perkins, president and CEO of PERC. “With extreme weather events on the rise, we need solutions that are as resilient as they are clean. Propane is widely available and rises to the challenge of reducing carbon emissions and keeping our planet clean and our communities up and running.”

In addition to being a low-carbon energy source, propane autogas is nontoxic and does not contaminate soil or water, making it a safe choice for fleets and the communities in which they operate. Today’s ultra-low nitrogen oxide (NOx) propane autogas engines reduce harmful NOx emissions by up to 96 percent and are certified to the California Air Resource’s Board’s (CARB) 0.02 grams per brake horsepower-hour (g/bhp-hr) standard.

These engines are even cleaner when they operate with renewable propane. Made from renewable feedstocks, renewable propane offers the same benefits of conventional propane — power, performance, and reliability — but with even lower emissions. Renewable propane can be used in any current propane autogas engine or infrastructure without modifications, providing another smart solution along the path to zero emissions.

Beyond its environmental benefits, propane autogas provides fleet owners with energy security and resilience because it is a portable energy source that can power equipment and be delivered even when the grid is down. Even in the aftermath of natural disasters like hurricanes, wildfires, blizzards, or blackouts, propane autogas keeps fleets on the road when they’re needed most.

Propane can also support electric vehicles with propane-powered EV charging. The technology utilizes a self-sufficient nanogrid with a propane-powered generator to provide DC level 3 fast charging. The infrastructure operates independently from the electric grid to keep EV fleets on the road.

“Propane autogas continues to empower fleet owners to meet their sustainability goals while staying resilient and efficient,” said Joel Stutheit, senior manager of autogas business development at PERC. “From slashing emissions and leveraging the latest in renewable technology to helping fleets maintain operational uptime, propane is trusted to keep vehicles on the road well into the future.”

New Jeep Compass Spied With EV Guts As Tariff Trouble Looms

  • The Jeep Compass is getting renewed in Europe, although US buyers may need to wait a bit longer.
  • A camouflaged prototype of the SUV made its spy debut in Italy, with a fully electric powertrain.
  • The SUV will also offer hybrid and plug-in hybrid options, riding on Stellantis underpinnings.

Jeep isn’t exactly known for keeping secrets, and the latest glimpse of the all-new third-generation Compass proves that trend is alive and well. The updated SUV has made its first undercover appearance in Europe, just weeks before its official debut, which has been confirmed for this spring.

Review: Jeep Avenger Proves ICE And Manual Combo Can Still Be Compelling

The camouflaged prototype was spotted in Italy during what appears to be the final stretch of development testing. Its overall silhouette sticks with familiar SUV proportions, though a few design details are immediately noticeable. Shorter overhangs and a more squared-off stance give it a subtly tougher look compared to the outgoing model.

Slim Lights, Covered Grille, and a Bit of Mystery

Previous teasers pointed to slim LED headlights flanking a redesigned seven-slot grille, which is expected to be illuminated. On the prototype, however, that grille is completely covered, likely hiding final details. The front bumper features a cooling intake with active flaps, a design cue aimed at improving aerodynamics, something that’s always been relevant in the EV era.

According to our spy photographers, the prototype shown here is running a fully electric powertrain, which explains the absence of an exhaust pipe. Jeep has already confirmed that the new Compass will be available in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric versions. That puts it in line with other Stellantis-brand SUVs that share similar platforms and tech.

A Big Platform Upgrade

The next-gen Compass will finally retire its aging FCA-era platform and shift to Stellantis’ more modern STLA Medium architecture. This updated structure is shared with models like the Peugeot 3008 and 5008, Opel Grandland, and the DS 8. It’s also expected to underpin the next Citroen C5 Aircross and DS 7, signaling Jeep’s move toward a more flexible and electrified future.

More: This Stellantis Brand Is Working On A Spicy SUV With An Electric Twist

If the Compass borrows specs from the Peugeot e-3008, we could see up to 321 horsepower (239 kW / 325 PS) from a dual-motor setup, offering all-wheel drive as standard on the top trim. The e-3008 comes with 73 kWh and 97 kWh battery options, both of which would make sense for the Jeep, depending on how the lineup is structured.

Production of the new Compass is slated to begin in Italy later this year, with the European market rollout following soon after. Originally, North American production was planned for 2026 in Canada, but those plans are now on hold. Ongoing uncertainty around US tariffs on imported vehicles has reportedly pushed back Jeep’s North American timeline.

EVs Dominate 2025 World Car Awards But Americans Can’t Even Buy Most Of Them

  • Electric vehicles have dominated the 2025 World Car Awards by winning five categories.
  • The Kia EV3 was named World Car of the Year and it’s slated to come to the United States.
  • All winners were EVs with the exception of the hybridized Porsche 911 Carrera GTS.

The World Car Awards have been presented at the New York Auto Show and they were a truly global affair. So much so, that most of the winners aren’t even available in the United States.

While that’s disappointing, the Kia EV3 was named 2025 World Car of the Year. The model beat the BMW X3 and Hyundai Inster to win top honors, earning Kia their second consecutive World Car of the Year award following last year’s crowning of the EV9.

2025 Kia EV3 Review: Everything We Love About The EV9 Made More Affordable

The EV3 isn’t offered in America, but it’s coming as long as tariffs don’t get in the way. That being said, we tested it earlier this year and came away pretty impressed.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Electric vehicles had a strong showing this year as the Volvo EX90 was named 2025 World Luxury Car. It bested the Porsche Macan and Porsche Panamera to take top honors.

The electric crossover starts at $79,995 and features a 111 kWh battery pack as well as a dual-motor all-wheel drive system with 402 hp (300 kW / 408 PS) and 568 lb-ft (769 Nm) of torque. This enables the model to hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in 5.7 seconds and travel up to 310 miles (499 km) on a single charge.

\\\\\\\\

Moving on, the Hyundai Inster / Casper Electric was named World Electric Vehicle. It’s a pint-sized urban crossover that has 113 hp (85 kW / 115 PS) and is primarily offered in the East.

The EV trend continues as the BYD Seagull / Dolphin Mini was named World Urban Car. The hatchback costs less than $10,000 in China and the Seagull Intelligent Driving Edition offers up to 252 miles (405 km) of range.

World Car Design of the Year, unsurprisingly, went to an EV. It was the Volkswagen ID. Buzz, which is interesting as the electric van has been around for a few years now. That doesn’t exactly seem fair, but the model bested the Kia EV3 and Toyota Land Cruiser / Land Cruiser 250 for the title.

\\\\\\\\\\\\

Last but not least, there’s the only non-EV to win an award. It was the Porsche 911 GTS, which was named 2025 World Performance Car.

The sports car starts at $169,800 and features a hybridized powertrain that consist of a turbocharged 3.6-liter flat-six, an electric motor, and a small battery pack. This gives the model a combined output of 532 hp (397 kW / 539 PS) and 449 lb-ft (608 Nm) of torque. This enables the coupe to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 2.9 seconds before hitting a top speed of 194 mph (312 km/h).
