Fatal Motorcoach Crash During Band Trip Raises School Bus Safety Lessons

27 August 2025 at 23:59

A motorcoach crash near Wawayanda, New York, that killed two adults and injured dozens of students two years ago underscores the critical importance of tire inspection and preventive maintenance.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released its final report this summer, concluding that a catastrophic failure of the left-front steer tire on a 2014 Prevost motorcoach caused the Sept. 21, 2023 crash. Investigators determined the failure resulted from prolonged tire under-inflation, prior impact damage, and eventual tread-and-belt separation. The bus veered sharply, breached a cable barrier and rolled into a ravine.

The motorcoach was carrying 40 high school students, three adult chaperones, and a 59-year-old driver en route to a band camp. Two chaperones were ejected and killed, the driver was seriously injured, 14 passengers sustained serious injuries, and 27 others were treated for minor injuries.

The Farmingdale Union Free School District, which chartered the motorcoach for its marching band trip, said the loss continues to reverberate across the community. Superintendent Paul Defendini described the tragedy as “unimaginable” for students, families and faculty, noting the emotional scars remain long after the wreckage was cleared.

While the crash involved a commercial motorcoach, the findings carry urgent lessons for school transportation. School buses meet strict construction standards for crashworthiness regulated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Adminsistration and undergo stringent inspections in the country required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and each state Department of Transportation — daily driver walk-arounds, preventive maintenance cycles, and recurring school district, bus company and state inspections.

By contrast, motorcoaches are only required by the FMCSA to have annual inspections. Federal and varying state rules focus more on the driver through hours-of-service and electric data logging requirements, though all motorcoaches must meet federal roof-crush standards must be equipped with lap/shoulder seatbelts.

Still, school districts nationwide commonly use motorcoaches for extracurricular and sports trips.

“This case underscores why school administrators and contractors should be paying attention to motorcoach inspection protocols, not just their yellow bus fleets,” said Bob Pudlewski, a longtime maintenance consultant and STN’s technical editor. “When a district hires a motorcoach for a trip, it’s still their students on board. Tire safety, driver checks and maintenance records all matter.”

NTSB has repeatedly flagged tire safety risks over the past decade, issuing recommendations to strengthen preventive maintenance across the passenger carrier industry. In past cases, under-inflation, aging tires and improper load ratings have contributed to deadly crashes.

In the case of Wawayanda, New York, investigators stressed that under-inflated and damaged tires are at high risk of sudden failure. The agency urged operators to adopt Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) or at minimum establish rigorous manual gauge checks to supplement visual inspections. It also reiterated the lifesaving value of lap/shoulder belts, noting that ejection remains a leading cause of death in rollovers.

“Tires that are inadequate or damaged pose an immediate risk to passengers and everyone else on the road,” Pudlewski said.

A Patchwork of State Requirements

Motorcoach oversight varies widely across states. Some jurisdictions mandate annual safety inspections, while others require semiannual checks or rely heavily on operator self-reporting. Federal regulations compel motor carriers to maintain preventive maintenance logs, but enforcement depends on state and local agencies, which may not always keep pace with operating cycles.

“Periodic regulatory agency inspections are not frequent enough to keep up with real-world operating cycles,” Pudlewski explained. “That’s why agencies require preventive maintenance checks conducted by owners, along with condition reports from drivers. Tires that are inadequate or damaged pose an immediate risk to passengers and everyone else on the road.”

Tires remain the single point of contact between a heavy vehicle and the road. A failure — whether from underinflation, aging, or improper installation — can instantly compromise steering and stability. Pudlewski emphasized that operators must take ownership of this responsibility, outlining the following best practices for both school buses and motorcoaches:

  • Check air pressure: Over- or under-inflated tires affect performance and safety. Consider TPMS or implement a scheduled tire inspection program using calibrated gauges.
  • Measure tread depth: Document during every preventive maintenance cycle. Minimum: 4/32 inch on steer tires and 2/32 inch on rear tires.
  • Rotate tires: Every 5,000 miles to even out wear.
  • Torque wheel lugs: Follow OEM torque guidelines and sequences.
  • Maintain alignment: Improper alignment accelerates wear and stresses tires as though under constant cornering.

Liability for School Districts

The Farmingdale tragedy also raises questions of liability for school districts when contracting with outside carriers. While federal law requires motorcoach operators to meet safety and insurance standards, parents may still hold districts accountable if oversight is perceived as lacking.

Legal experts warn that failure to vet an operator’s maintenance records or safety ratings could expose districts to criticism or even liability. Transparency, safety audits and clear documentation may help build trust with parents and mitigate risk.

“The school bus industry has long led the way in preventive safety,” Pudlewski said. “Extending that same culture of vigilance to motorcoach trips is essential. At the end of the day, parents don’t distinguish between bus types—they just expect their children to get home safely.”

In the wake of the crash, New York lawmakers passed Assembly Bill A8557, requiring seatbelts on all charter buses and mandating their use. The law, which took effect in April, also increases penalties for noncompliance. State leaders say the measure is aimed at reducing fatalities and serious injuries in future crashes. Meanwhile, New York has required “seat safety belts” on school buses since 1987. The law does not specify if those seatbelts should be the two-point lap belt or three-point lap/shoulder belt variety.

The NTSB’s report shows how a single underinflated tire can cascade into tragedy. For school leaders, maintenance directors, and contractors alike, diligence is not optional, concluded Pudlewski.

“Tires are the sole point of contact between a vehicle and the road,” Pudlewski added. “Their proper care isn’t optional—it’s essential for student safety.”

Porsche’s Electric Crossover Just Got A Lot More Fun

  • The 2026 Porsche Macan Electric has been unveiled with a number of tech-focused updates.
  • Buyers will find AI-enhanced Voice Pilot, digital key technology, and automated driving features.
  • The crossover also has an increased towing capacity as well as AirConsole gaming.

The Porsche Macan Electric is getting even better for 2026 as the company has announced a host of upgrades. These include new features, AI integration, and an increased towing capacity.

While the updates are a bit scattershot, the Macan Electric is embracing digital key technology. This will enable iPhone and Android users to automatically unlock and start their vehicle, while leaving their phone in a pocket or purse. This is possible thanks to the use of Near Field Communication (NFC), Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) connectivity, and Apple Watch users can also get in on the action.

More: Porsche Macan EV Arrives From $79k, Turbo Is Quicker Than A 911 GT3

The technology also allows owners to easily ‘share’ keys with up to seven other users. Owners can determine if these users can simply access the vehicle or drive it.

New Automated Driving Features

Speaking of driving, the optional 3D Surround View system with Active Parking Support gains several new features including a Transparent Hood view. More interestingly, there’s a new Trained Parking function that enables owners to record individual parking routines such as pulling into a garage. After ‘learning’ the routine, the crossover can automatically perform it time and time again.

Porsche’s Electric Crossover Just Got A Lot More Fun

Another new addition is Reversing Assist, which allows the Macan to automatically reverse along a route it has previously driven forwards. The crossover remembers up to 160 feet (48.8 meters) and Porsche said this is useful for backing up in tight situations.

Sticking with the tech theme, the Porsche Charging Planner has been “optimized” and now allows owners to prioritize individual charging stations and providers. This implies customers could set up the system to favor Electrify America stations over rivals.

AirConsole Gaming

When you’re waiting for a charge or simply killing time, you can play games with the new AirConsole, which is accessible via the Porsche App Center. Smartphones can be used as controllers and games are typically played on the central infotainment system when parked. However, the optional front passenger display can also be used to play games when the vehicle is in motion and drivers shouldn’t be distracted due to Porsche’s integrated screen privacy feature.

AirConsole said owners can expect an assortment of “short-session, casual games optimized for the in-car environment” ranging from racing and trivia games to those involving sports. Among the more popular options are UNO and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

\\\\\\\\\\

AI And Improved Towing Capacities

If you’re not in the mood to play, you can talk to your crossover via Voice Pilot. It promises to be smarter than ever before thanks to the integration of artificial intelligence. Porsche said the voice assistant now understands “complex, interrelated questions and recognizes what a statement is referring to.”

Rounding out the highlights is an increased towing capacity for the Macan 4, Macan 4S, and Macan Turbo. They can now tow up to 5,500 lbs (2,495 kg), which is a sizable increase of 1,100 lbs (499 kg). Customers will also find a handful of new customization options including new choices for the door sill guards and door courtesy lights.

The 2026 Macan Electric is currently available to order and U.S. deliveries will begin next spring.

Neue Klasse BMW Prototype Crash Leaves Bus Mangled And Multiple Injured

  • A BMW iX3 prototype was involved in a serious head-on collision in Hungary.
  • Local reports allege the EV was speeding before colliding with the passenger bus.
  • Eight passengers, including a child, were hospitalized with injuries from the accident.

A BMW iX3 prototype has been involved in a serious crash with a bus in Hungary. Local reports suggest multiple people were injured and several passengers were thrown from the bus.

The bus’ operator, MÁV-csoport, said the vehicle was traveling to Gyöngyös when the iX3 “drifted into the lane” of the bus and “crashed into it head-on.” Seven passengers on the bus – including a child – were injured as was the bus driver.

Photos from the scene show the devastation as the bus’ front end was smashed, while several windows were broken. The front side section was also ripped off and mangled.

MÁV-csoport said the driver “did his best to avoid the collision,” but “didn’t have a chance against the oncoming car.” The company also noted the bus was “totally damaged and a considerable amount of fuel flowed onto the road.”

The incident reportedly occurred near Mátrafüred and Gyöngyös Ma claimed the electric crossover was driving too fast. That remains to be seen, but the prototype appears to have been totaled as the entire front end was obliterated.

In the few pictures taken before the crossover was covered, we can see the front wheel was ‘ripped’ off, while the bumper and front fender were apparently destroyed. The hood was also popped open, while the airbags deployed.

Tesla Quietly Expands Robotaxi Zone To Nearly Double Waymo’s Coverage In Austin

  • Tesla expands Robotaxi geofence in Austin to 171 square miles, eclipsing Waymo’s 90.
  • The expansion covers downtown, the suburbs, and the Tesla Gigafactory Texas.
  • Ongoing rivalry with Waymo continues to push rapid innovation for consumers.

Tesla and Waymo are pushing hard to win taxi customers in Austin, Texas. On Tuesday morning, the battle shifted again as Tesla expanded its geo-fenced area to include 171 square miles. That’s almost double what Waymo currently covers, namely 90 square miles, but the war probably isn’t over.

Since July, the two companies have sparred to own the robotaxi market in Austin. The battle couldn’t start any sooner because that’s when Tesla got into the business there. On the flip side, Waymo started its service there back in March. When it did, it kicked things off with a geo-fenced public service map of just 37 square miles.

More: Waymo’s NYC Debut Comes With Training Wheels

When Tesla first began offering rides, it covered just 20 square miles. That didn’t last long, though. It soon expanded the rideshare program to more people and made its coverage map 42 square miles. Waymo then countered with a map that covered 90 square miles just two days later. The battle sat there until today when Tesla expanded to 171 square miles.

The new map almost doubles Waymo’s coverage and includes several suburbs of Austin, downtown, and even access to Tesla’s Gigafactory Texas. That sounds great on its face, and ultimately, an expanded map is good, but there are some concerns. Mainly, Robotaxi customers are complaining online that the fleet is simply too small.

— Tesla Robotaxi (@robotaxi) August 26, 2025

As we reported before the service went live, the fleet launched with fewer than two dozen cars. It’s unclear if Tesla has expanded the fleet, but some believe it’s as few as ten cars in total. If true, this expanded service area could simply make the wait for a ride considerably longer.

In addition, it’s worth noting that Tesla doesn’t allow just anyone to use its service. Right now, it’s still in a private beta testing mode, so only approved riders have access. On top of that, Robotaxi currently has a human safety attendant in the car during every ride so yes, Tesla customers can go further than Waymo customers for now, but access is heavily limited. At the end of the day, everybody wins here, since more innovation should prove beneficial in the long run.

IRS Quietly Extends EV Tax Credit Deadline But There’s A Catch

  • The IRS has quietly extended the deadline for Americans to get the clean vehicle tax credit.
  • As long as customers make a payment and have a binding contract, they’ll get the credit.
  • This means that even if they take delivery after the September 30 deadline, they’ll get the credit.

When President Donald Trump signed The One Big Beautiful Bill into law, it sped up the elimination of the clean vehicle tax credit. The $7,500 incentive was originally set to expire on December 31, 2032, but that date was moved forward to September 30, 2025.

The change has helped to drive EV sales as some consumers are rushing to buy one before the tax credit expires. However, they’re getting a little bit of breathing room thanks to new guidance by the IRS.

More: America’s EV Boom Suddenly Took Its First Hit After 14 Months Of Growth

As noticed by Investor’s Business Daily, the IRS states the new and previously-owned “credit will not be allowed for any vehicle acquired after September 30, 2025.” While that was expected, the meaning of “acquired” takes on a lot of significance.

While the initial expectation was that a vehicle needed to be in customer hands, the IRS says a “vehicle is ‘acquired’ as of the date a written binding contract is entered into and a payment has been made.” They went on to note a payment can include everything from a trade-in to a “nominal” amount.

IRS Quietly Extends EV Tax Credit Deadline But There’s A Catch

Unfortunately, things aren’t that easy as the IRS said “acquisition alone does not immediately entitle a taxpayer to a credit” as it’s just an “initial step.” However, they noted “If a taxpayer acquires a vehicle by having a written binding contract in place and a payment made on or before September 30, 2025, then the taxpayer will be entitled to claim the credit when they place the vehicle in service (namely, when they take possession of the vehicle), even if the vehicle is placed in service after September 30, 2025.”

This means as long as you sign paperwork and make a payment before September 30, you should still get your tax credit. Strangely, the IRS didn’t mention a final deadline for customers to take delivery. While that’s puzzling, it means customers don’t have to stress out about getting an EV that might be in short supply as the tax credit winds down.

Rental Rivian’s Pool Feels Like An $80K Kiddie Tub Of Stranger Backwash

  • Uber and Turo teamed up to launch a free pool truck experience.
  • The Rivian R1T-based pool truck offered bookings in LA and Miami.
  • Guests enjoy popsicles, swag, and $300 toward a future Turo rental.

Making a splash is usually just a figure of speech, but Uber and Turo are giving it a more literal twist with their latest promotion. The two companies have teamed up to create a pool truck, letting customers book short but memorable rides in a Rivian R1T converted into a rolling oasis. For a couple of days in Miami, lucky participants can enjoy free two-hour sessions complete with extra perks.

The program kicked off in Los Angeles on August 23 and 24. On August 30 and 31, the Rivian pool truck is moving to Miami and bringing an all-inclusive experience.

The pool truck will feature floaties, frozen treats, and even a personal attendant to keep the vibes flowing. Participants will even get a $300 credit toward future Turo rentals through Uber Rent. Importantly, diving is not allowed given the pool’s depth of about 18 inches.

Uber and Turo say that even if you can’t get in on the fun in person, they’re offering $25 off bookings of $100 or more through September 1. Uber One members earn 10 percent credits on top of that deal. As far as we can tell, bookings are closed at this point, but there’s no harm in checking for yourself. As for reaction to the event? Being sold out seems like a good indication, but online reactions are less eager.

The Internet Weighs In

Jokes are flying left and right like “If that’s a pool, I have an ocean in my backyard.” That’s even funnier considering both Miami and LA have actual oceans very close by for folks who actually want to swim.

Posts from the rivnstock
community on Reddit

Others pointed out that this whole thing kinda sounds a bit gross given that Rivians aren’t built with onboard water filtration systems. “So you get in and do what? Just sit in a soup of everyone’s dirt? It’s not a hot tub, just a glorified bath,” said one commenter.

A Short-Lived Spectacle

Whether it’s a clever stunt or just a curious experiment, the pool truck feels destined to make headlines for a moment before drying up. It’s eye-catching, fun, and clearly well-organized, but as a long-term idea, maybe not the most practical or clean.

Ohio School District Celebrates New School Year, Highlights Urgent Need for Bus Drivers

27 August 2025 at 22:11

Warren City Schools in Ohio kicked off the new academic year with a spirited community celebration at Courthouse Square. While the atmosphere was upbeat, school officials took the opportunity to address a pressing challenge facing the district; a shortage of school bus drivers, reported WKBN 27.

“Our goal is to have a lot of positive energy and to kick school off in a very positive light,” said Superintendent Steve Chiaro via the article, who praised the strong turnout and community support.

But behind the celebration lies a logistical concern. John Lacy, executive director of business operations for Warren City Schools, stated the district is “barely covering routes” and urgently needs more drivers to avoid double routes and delays.

To attract applicants, the district showcased a school bus during the event and shared details about the position. Bus drivers in Warren earn approximately $24 an hour, receive full benefits, and work year-round, not just during the school year. The district also fully covers the cost of CDL training for new drivers.

“We’re doing everything we can to recruit,” said Lacy via the article. “People are often surprised at how good the pay and benefits are.”

The district said it remains hopeful that community outreach and incentives will help ease the shortage. In the meantime, Superintendent Chiaro reportedly emphasized the importance of community involvement in supporting student success.

“Because we can’t do it alone,” Chiaro said. “We need every aspect of assistance in helping our kids along the way.”

Transportation Software Company TransAct Rebrands to Pathwise

27 August 2025 at 22:00

TransAct Communications has officially rebranded to Pathwise, unveiling a new name, visual identity and website that the company said signals a renewed focus on simplifying K–12 school operations.

While the brand’s visual identity has changed, the company remains under the same leadership and ownership, as does its core mission to reduce the administrative burden on school staff so educators can stay focused on student success through transportation logistics, governance, compliance, and out-of-school time programs. Pathwise will continue to serve school districts, charter organizations and state departments of education across the country with no disruption to its services or leadership.

“This rebrand reflects who we’ve become a trusted partner with deep education roots and a clear focus on helping schools run more smoothly so educators can focus on students,” said Nate Brogan, CEO of Pathwise, via a press release.

The rebrand comes on the heels of significant growth. Since partnering with Polaris Growth Fund in 2020, the company said it has quadrupled its revenue and made major investments in leadership, product innovation and customer experience. Dan Lombard, managing partner at Polaris, noted in a statement that the rebranding was a natural step toward aligning the company’s public identity with its expanded impact and long-term goals.

The name Pathwise was chosen to convey more than just progress. The company said t represents guidance, purpose and partnership and positions the company not just as a vendor but as a trusted advisor to help schools manage the unseen but essential operations that keep learning on track.

Pathwise launched a redesigned website that it said refined its messaging to better communicate the value it brings to K–12 education.

The company serves over 3,000 school districts and charter organizations, as well as more than 25 state departments of education.

Cadillac Delivers Another Celestiq As The Brand Looks Beyond EVs

  • Cadillac has delivered another Celestiq to its lucky owner.
  • Roughly 25% of Cadillac sales now come from EVs.
  • The brand is also gearing up to launch a new XT5.

After a lengthy delay, Cadillac began Celestiq deliveries earlier this year. They’re now picking up pace and the latest model was delivered to Michigander Mark Mitchell.

His ultra-luxury flagship was delivered in a private ceremony at The Daxton Hotel in Birmingham yesterday. While Cadillac House is only a stone’s throw away in Warren, the hotel was a fitting location as it’s owned by Mitchell.

More: Cadillac Delivers First $350,000 Celestiq EV

Besides receiving his Siku Tricoat Celestiq, which features a Camelia and Sheer Gray interior, Mitchell got his car signed by GM President Mark Reuss, who was in attendance for the event. Mitchell was delighted and said, “The vehicle completely surpassed my expectations.”

As a brief refresher, the car features a dual-motor all-wheel drive system that produces 655 hp (488 kW / 664 PS) and 646 lb-ft (875 Nm) of torque. It’s powered by a 111 kWh battery pack, which provides approximately 303 miles (488 km) of range.

\\\\\

A Brand Revamp And A New XT5

While the Celestiq marks the company’s return to the ultra-luxury segment, Cadillac’s John Roth recently noted the brand was struggling as recently as 2015. As he explained, “The product portfolio was good, but not great” and they were spending too much on incentives to attract buyers.

This caused a major rethink and a massive investment that would transform the brand. Part of this was driven by a plan to have Cadillac go electric-only and this necessitated a slew of new models including the Optiq, Lyriq, Vistiq, Escalade IQ, and Celestiq.

Cadillac Delivers Another Celestiq As The Brand Looks Beyond EVs

While that plan was ultimately abandoned, Cadillac has a lot of new product and roughly 25% of sales now come from EVs. The company also noted the Optiq, Lyriq, and Vistiq are conquest kings as more than 70% of buyers are new to the brand.

That’s good news, but a majority of sales still come from ICE-powered vehicles. This is a problem as the XT4 and XT6 are toast, while the XT5 is a dinosaur. However, the company is working to address that as Roth recently told dealers about the next-generation XT5.

The redesigned crossover will be launched in the second-half of 2027 and is expected to echo its Chinese counterpart. However, the US-spec model will be made in Tennessee and could use a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder that develops 328 hp (245 kW / 333 PS).

Family Says Cybertruck Became A Fiery Trap That Killed Driver

  • Family alleges Tesla Cybertruck defects trapped 47-year-old driver in fiery August crash.
  • The lawsuit also accuses Barn Whiskey Bar of over-serving alcohol before the incident.
  • Plaintiffs seek over $1M in damages despite NHTSA’s top safety rating for the Cybertruck.

A tragic crash involving a Tesla Cybertruck has now turned into a courtroom battle. More than a year after Michael Sheehan lost his life in a single-vehicle accident, his family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against both Tesla and a Texas bar, arguing that both share responsibility for what happened.

According to the complaint, filed in Harris County District Court, Sheehan owned the Cybertruck for just 102 days when the crash happened. He left the Barn Whiskey Bar in Cypress, Texas, and crashed about seven miles away. The Tesla left the road, hit a culvert, and burst into flames.

More: Witness Says Cybertruck Doors Wouldn’t Open In Fatal California Crash

At the time of the accident, it was unclear what caused the crash. Investigators openly admitted that just identifying the body was difficult due to the heat of the fire. Now, we have a little more insight into potentially contributing factors.

Claims Against The Bar

Sheehan’s family says that the Barn Whiskey Bar over-served Sheehan despite him being “clearly intoxicated.” In fact, the lawsuit goes as far as to say that “it was apparent to the provider that MICHAEL SHEEHAN was obviously intoxicated to the extent that he presented a clear danger to himself and others.”

Family Says Cybertruck Became A Fiery Trap That Killed Driver

Interestingly, the family also blames Tesla because it says the Cybertruck itself is dangerous. According to the lawsuit, the “battery cell chemistry used is hyper volatile and susceptible to thermal runaway.” The family says that the automaker could have used “battery cell chemistry with slower thermal propagation readily available, which allows longer time to escape post-crash.”

The family goes on to cite other things it sees as defects, like the battery modules, the packs, the location of the vents in those modules and packs, and even the door handles in the truck that are “unreasonably difficult to locate in an emergency.”

What The Family Seeks

Essentially, the family believes that if the fire had spread more slowly and if egress had been easier, Sheehan would’ve escaped. To that end, it’s seeking damages in excess of $1,000,000. All that said, it’s also worth noting that the Cybertruck has the highest safety rating (five-star) from the NHTSA.

Rolls-Royce Turns Its $400K EV Into A Cherry Blossom Diorama For Grown-Ups

  • Rolls-Royce has introduced the new Spectre Inspired by Primavera.
  • Designed to honor spring, the colorful EV features cherry blossom motifs.
  • Buyers will also find unique wood trim with a wallpaper-like appearance.

The Rolls-Royce Spectre is becoming even more exclusive as the ultra-luxury brand has unveiled a new Inspired by Primavera edition. It’s being billed as a “poetic exploration of spring expressed through a series of highly bespoke motor cars.”

Named after the Italian word for spring, the Primavera features a hand-painted coachline with a cherry blossom motif in front of the doors. The model also rides on unique 23-inch wheels, which have a “directional form” that is designed to recall “petals gradually opening to meet the spring light.”

Review: The Rolls-Royce Spectre Is The Ultimate EV

The floral theme continues inside with colorful seats featuring embroidered cherry blossom headrests. They’re joined by illuminated sill plates with a cherry blossom design as well as “Spectre Inspired by Primavera” badging. Buyers will also find Starlight Doors, which have 4,796 hand-placed lights.

However, the star of the show is blackwood trim featuring an engraved cherry blossom motif. Rolls-Royce says the wallpaper like effect was “achieved by experimenting with 37 different laser densities to create a balanced contrast against the polished wood surface, followed by the development of a special sanding process that preserves the detail without diminishing the finish.”

The Spectre Inspired by Primavera will be offered in three “distinct expressions” known as Evanescent, Reverie, and Blossom. Each features a unique color scheme and the model will be available for commissioning until early 2026. Deliveries are then slated to begin shortly before spring.

Motivation comes from a 102 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which powers a dual-motor all-wheel drive system developing 577 hp (430 kW / 584 PS) and 664 lb-ft (900 Nm) of torque. This enables the standard model to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 4.4 seconds and have an EPA range of up to 277 miles
 (446 km).

Why Canadians Pay More For The Nissan Leaf Than Americans

  • The 2026 Nissan Leaf starts under $30,000 in the US but costs more in Canada.
  • Cold-climate features included as standard equipment it more expensive.
  • Despite higher pricing, the Leaf remains one of Canada’s most affordable EVs.

Shoppers weighing the cost of going electric may notice a curious difference between the US and Canadian markets. Nissan has confirmed US pricing for the new Leaf, which still holds its spot among the most affordable EVs available at just under US$30,000. North of the border, however, the same car carries a steeper price tag, leaving dealers, executives, and analysts to explain the gap.

The automaker has not yet shared pricing for the base Leaf S in Canada, so comparisons focus on higher trims. At current exchange rates, the S+ comes in about US$2,600 higher in Canada, the SV+ is roughly US$500 more, while the range-topping Platinum+ is actually US$800 less expensive than in the US.

When we compare the 2026 MY to the original Leaf from the 2011 MY, without accounting for inflation, the starting price in the US market is actually lower today (US$ 29,990 versus 32,780), something that was mentioned as a notable achievement by Nissan. However, in Canada the model has gotten more expensive than its grandfather (CA$ 44,998 versus 38,395). So what explains the difference between the two markets?

So what explains the diverging trends? Nissan Canada spokesman Didier Marsaud told Auto News: “Vehicle pricing is determined by a number of factors, including vehicle specifications, market competitiveness, and more, hence why Canadian and U.S. pricing may not be exactly the same.”

Extra Features for Cold Climates

One major factor is equipment. The Canadian-spec Leaf S+ includes heated front seats, heated mirrors, a heat pump, a battery heater, and LED turn signals as standard features, none of which are included on the equivalent US model. These additions are practical for colder regions and arguably add value for Canadian buyers.

Robert Karwel, analyst at J.D. Power Canada, echoed this point. He noted that differences in packaging and market dynamics often lead to Canadian models being less stripped-down than their US counterparts. “This is not an uncommon position to take in Canada, where models are more likely to be equipped not as strict ‘price leaders’ but in a way that reflects what most Canadians will actually buy.”

Despite the higher sticker price, Karwel pointed out that the Leaf still lands as one of the most affordable EVs “at transaction price” in Canada. Its cost undercuts several direct competitors, including the Chevy Equinox EV at CA$48,433, the Kia Niro EV at CA$48,620, and the Hyundai Kona Electric at CA$49,279.

Steve Chipman, CEO of Birchwood Automotive Group, which operates 24 dealerships across Canada, acknowledged that cross-border TV ads showing US prices might cause confusion. Still, he hopes buyers recognize the realities of regional pricing. “This is Canada and this is the pricing,” he said.

The EV Truck Wave Is Growing But Mazda Is Steering The Other Way

  • The managing director of Mazda Australia said they won’t be offering an EV truck anytime soon.
  • He believes that diesel is here to stay, and doesn’t think that PHEV and BEV will be the only options.
  • This means that the Mazda BT-50 won’t be following the example of the Isuzu D-Max EV twin.

Over the past few years there has been a growing number of trucks with fully electric, plug-in hybrid, or mild-hybrid powertrains, but some believe that the good-old diesel remains the best fit for the job. The Australian arm of Mazda declares loyalty to diesel trucks, despite theoretically having access to an EV powertrain for the BT-50.

The Mazda BT-50 is a midsize truck which is twined with the Isuzu D-Max. The latter has recently expanded its lineup with a fully electric version. The D-Max EV has an output of 188 hp (140 kW / 190 PS) from dual electric motors and a WLTP range of 263 km (163 miles) from a 66.9 kWh battery pack. However, it starting price is significantly higher than the equivalent diesel.

Our colleagues from Drive.com.au spoke to Vinesh Bhindi, Managing Director of Mazda Australia, asking him about a potential BT-50 EV. Bhindi replied that Mazda is not ready to make any announcements at this stage, and he added:

“I don’t think we will be having a battery EV ute anytime soon. But we will let the market tell us that there is room for it, and there is demand for it, and Mazda should consider what the options are.”

The Ford Ranger, BYD Shark, and GMW Cannon Alpha have already brought plug-in hybrid tech in the midsize truck segment, while the upcoming Nissan Navara and the next Mitsubishi Triton are expected to follow the same road. Still, the boss of Mazda Australia doesn’t believe that PHEVs are a threat:

“Diesel in utes is here to stay, I don’t see a future where plug-in hybrids or battery EV utes are the only options, I think diesel still makes sense. And when you look at the NVES (New Vehicle Efficiency Standard), diesel technology still has better CO2 output compared to the others.”

These comments make it clear that the Mazda BT-50 won’t be getting a zero-emission option – at least in the foreseeable future. Still, we can’t entirely rule out a smaller dose of electrification, following the example of the Toyota Hilux which recently got a mild-hybrid diesel. After all, this doesn’t sacrifice any of the advantages of the diesel (high low-end torque, reliability, cargo-carrying and towing capabilities etc) while helping lower fuel consumption and emissions.

The third generation of the BT-50 was introduced in 202 and received a facelift in 2024. Currently, it is available in Australia with two turbodiesel powertrains. The base 2.2-liter four-cylinder produces 161 hp (120 kW / 163 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque, while the larger 3.0-liter is good for 187 hp (140 kW / 190 PS) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft).

BYD’s Track-Focused Hypercar Beats Rimac As The World’s Fastest EV

  • The Yangwang U9 Track Edition hit 472.41 km/h (293.54 mph) at the test track in Papenburg.
  • This is the highest top speed by an electric vehicle, surpassing the previous record by Rimac.
  • The Track Edition of the EV has quad electric motors with a combined output of over 2,960 hp.

Chinese automaker BYD announced that the Yangwang U9 Track Edition has reached a top speed of 472.41 km/h (293.54 mph) at a test track in Germany, making it the fastest electric vehicle in the world.

The record run took place on August 8 at the ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg facilities, with professional driver Marc Basseng behind the wheel. The previous record was held by the Rimac Nevera R that hit 431.45 km/h (268.2 mph) on July 2025. Furthermore, the Track Edition proved to be much faster than the standard Yangwang U9 that reached 391.94 km/h (243.54 mph) in November 2024.

The Track Edition is fitted with quad electric motors generating a peak power of 744 hp (555 kW / 755 PS) each. According to BYD, the combined output is over 2,960 hp (2,207 kW / 3,000 PS), translating to an impressive power-to-weight ratio of 1,200 hp per tonne. By comparison, the Nevera R has 1,989 hp (1,571 kW / 2,017 PS) and a ratio of 978 hp per tonne.

In order to control all that power, the EV utilizes advanced torque vectoring abilities, and the e4 Platform’s DiSus-X Intelligent Body Control System making automatic adjustments to the suspension for maximum grip. Furthermore, it is said to be use “the first mass-produced 1200V ultra-high-voltage vehicle platform, paired with a thermal-management system optimized for extreme conditions”.

The Yangwang U9 Track Edition made its first appearance earlier this month through China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The model that achieved the record appears to have duct tape on the panel gaps for improved aerodynamics. It also features an optional redesigned carbon fiber splitter and does without the swan neck rear wing.

The record-breaking EV rides on a set of track-focused semi-slick tires developed in collaboration with Giti Tire. These feature optimized compound materials and a bespoke tread design, along with a high-viscosity lubricant and a special knurling treatment between the tire and the rim for minimizing relative slippage.

Basseng, who was also behind the wheel of the previous record run with the regular Yangwang U9, said: “Last year, I thought I’d peaked. I never expected to break my own record so soon – but here we are, at the same track, with new technologies that have made it possible.”

The Smallest Ioniq Yet Could Become Hyundai’s Biggest Surprise

  • Hyundai will unveil a new fully electric concept at the IAA Mobility Show in Munich.
  • Teasers reveal full-width LED bars on both ends and a ducktail spoiler at the back.
  • The concept will reportedly evolve into a production EV set to arrive next year.

Hyundai has shared the first teasers of a new concept that will premiere on September 9 at the IAA Mobility Show 2025 in Munich. While details are kept under wraps, the concept will likely evolve into a production subcompact EV, likely bearing the Ioniq 2 moniker.

The images suggest that the new model will have full-width LED bars for the headlights and the taillights, similar to the facelifted Hyundai Ioniq 6 sedan. In terms of bodystyle, the EV appears to adopt a chunky fastback / hatchback silhouette with an integrated ducktail spoiler.

We can also see sporty bumper intakes, a pronounced chin, and flared fenders. Hyundai will share two more sets of teaser photos before the unveiling. These will likely provide a clearer view of the exterior design.

Our spy photographers have recently spotted a camouflaged prototype which is believed to be an upcoming Hyundai EV. The shape of the prototype is consistent with the teasers, although the concept will most likely feature a unique bodykit and different wheels.

Chances are that the new EV will share the E-GMP architecture with the Kia EV2 and EV3 crossovers. This means it could be powered by a single electric motor with 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS), sourcing energy from a 58.3 kWh battery pack.

The baby Ioniq will compete with other electric subcompact hatchbacks including the Renault 5 E-Tech, the Nissan Micra, the Peugeot E-208, the Opel Corsa Electric, the Citroen e-C3, and the BYD Dolphin.

According to the latest reports the model could hit the market in the first half of 2026. Before that happens, we will see the concept version at the IAA Mobility 2025. The show will be held in Munich, Germany, between September 9 and 14.

Facelifted Peugeot 308 Drops The Fangs But Learns New Tricks

  • The Peugeot 308 gets a mid-lifecycle update with sharper styling and key upgrades.
  • The hatchback and estate (SW) feature a redesigned front end with split headlights.
  • Powertrain options now include diesel, mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric variants.

The auto industry may be swept up in SUV fever, but hatchbacks and estates still hold plenty of appeal in Europe. That’s why Peugeot has just revealed the facelifted 308, offering fresh styling updates alongside a wider mix of powertrain options.

More: The Most Chic Hatch From Stellantis Just Got a New Identity

The current generation first appeared in 2021, debuting a sharper evolution of Peugeot’s design language. Four years later, the mid-cycle update introduces a new face that drops the brand’s signature “fangs.” In their place are split headlights, with LED claws perched above and the main beams tucked into black lacquered sections of the reworked bumper.

A Sharper Exterior

Rather than adding a full-width LED strip, Peugeot designers chose a set of luminous strands above the body-colored grille. The base Allure comes standard with full LEDs, while the GT and GT Premium add Matrix LED tech with sequential indicators. Another highlight is the illuminated emblem which is a first for Peugeot and will likely be applied to all future models.

According to the company, the new bumper intakes contribute to better aerodynamics, guiding the airflow to the wheel arches. The profile is largely carried-over but gains fresh 17-inch or 18-inch alloy wheels, a new Lagoa Blue colour for the hatchback and the Ingaro Blue shade for the estate. The rear end also remains unchanged but the bumper drops the chrome inserts and the taillights now feature the fancier LED claws on all trims (previously limited to the GT).

Interior Updates

Moving inside, the 308 doesn’t get the newer digital cockpit of the mechanically-related 3008 and 5008 SUVs, but it’s own version of the i-Cockpit with the 10-inch display still looks quite modern.

Changes include the new 3D graphics for the digital instrument cluster, and the Alcantara upholstery on the GT and GT Premium trims. Equipment can include a 10-speaker Focal Premium Hi-fi System, an eight-color ambient lighting, and massaging seats, while the infotainment benefits from over-the-air upgrades.

Peugeot claims they use 31% recycled and renewable materials for the construction of the facelifted 308, weighing 405 kg (893 pounds) per vehicle.

Wagon Practicality

Luckily for fans of station wagons, the Peugeot 308 SW has survived the facelift, with a longer body and the extra practicality of a large boot. The model can carry between 598-1,487 litres (21.1-52.5 cubic feet) of luggage depending on the seating configuration. It also features a 40:20:40 split on the rear bench, and a power tailgate.

\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Peugeot

The Peugeot 308 rides on the EMP2 platform which is shared with the Opel Astra and Astra Sports Tourer, and the recently facelifted DS N°4. Chances are that the next generation will move to the evolved STLA Medium architecture which is already used in a number of Stellantis compact SUVs.

Diesel, Mild-Hybrid, PHEV, And Fully Electric Options

While the auto industry is moving away from diesels, Stellantis has decided to keep offering the Peugeot 308 with the 1.5-liter BlueHDi four-cylinder turbodiesel. The only non-electrified engine in the lineup produces 129 hp (96 kW / 130 PS) and is exclusively mated to an eight-speed automatic.

The model is also available with a mild-hybrid turbo 1.2-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine which is good for 143 hp (107 kW / 145 PS). This is made to a six-speed dual-clutch automatic (e-DSC6) with an integrated electric motor. Peugeot claims that the MHEV can drive up to 50% of the time in EV mode in urban environments.

Moving further up the electrification ladder, the 308 Plug-in Hybrid combines a single electric motor with a turbo 1.6-liter engine producing a combined 192 hp (143 kW / 195 PS). The setup includes a seven-speed e-DCS7 dual clutch automatic and a 17.2 kWh battery pack, allowing a zero-emission range of 53 miles (85 km).

More: The First Electric GTI Isn’t From VW

Finally, the fully electric E-308 has a front-mounted electric motor producing 154 hp (115 kW / 156 PS), sourcing energy from a 58.4 kWh battery pack. The WLTP range is 281 miles (452 km), representing an increase of 23 miles (37 km) compared to the pre-facelifted version, achieved thanks to improvements in battery and powertrain efficiency. When connected to an 100 kW DC charger, the EV can charge from 20-80% in 32 minutes. Furthermore, it is compatible with V2L function using an optional adapter.

The company didn’t mention anything about a potential performance-focused version that could signal the return of the GTI badge in a compact hot hatch. Note that Peugeot has recently introduced the fully electric E-208 GTI, after announcing that the PSE (Peugeot Sport Engineered) badge won’t live past the existing 508.

Availability And Rivals

The facelifted lineup of the Peugeot 308 will be available in Europe and the UK starting this autumn. Prices are expected to be announced at a later date. The model will still be manufactured at the Mulhouse plant in France.

Rivals of the Peugeot 308 include the likes of the VW Golf, Opel Astra, Toyota Corolla, and Honda Civic, as the Ford Focus has been discontinued. More premium offerings in the compact hatchback segment include the DS N°4, Audi A3, BMW 1-Series, and Mercedes A-Class.
